Surface albedo is a key variable influencing ground-reflected solar irradiance, which is a vital factor in boosting the energy gains of bifacial solar installations. Therefore, surface albedo is crucial towards estimating photovoltaic power generation of both bifacial and tilted solar installations. Varying across daylight hours, seasons, and locations, surface albedo is assumed to be constant across time by various models. The lack of granular temporal observations is a major challenge to the modeling of intra-day albedo variability. Though satellite observations of surface reflectance, useful for estimating surface albedo, provide wide spatial coverage, they too lack temporal granularity. Therefore, this paper considers a novel approach to temporal downscaling with imaging time series of satellite-sensed surface reflectance and limited high-temporal ground observations from surface radiation (SURFRAD) monitoring stations. Aimed at increasing information density for learning temporal patterns from an image series and using visual redundancy within such imagery for temporal downscaling, we introduce temporally shifted heatmaps as an advantageous approach over Gramian Angular Field (GAF)-based image time series. Further, we propose Multispectral-WaveMix, a derivative of the mixer-based computer vision architecture, as a high-performance model to harness image time series for surface albedo forecasting applications. Multispectral-WaveMix models intra-day variations in surface albedo on a 1 min scale. The framework combines satellite-sensed multispectral surface reflectance imagery at a 30 m scale from Landsat and Sentinel-2A and 2B satellites and granular ground observations from SURFRAD surface radiation monitoring sites as image time series for image-to-image translation between remote-sensed imagery and ground observations. The proposed model, with temporally shifted heatmaps and Multispectral-WaveMix, was benchmarked against predictions from models image-to-image MLP-Mix, MLP-Mix, and Standard MLP. Model predictions were also contrasted against ground observations from the monitoring sites and predictions from the National Solar Radiation Database (NSRDB). The Multispectral-WaveMix outperformed other models with a Cauchy loss of 0.00524, a signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of 72.569, and a structural similarity index (SSIM) of 0.999, demonstrating the high potential of such modeling approaches for generating granular time series. Additional experiments were also conducted to explore the potential of the trained model as a domain-specific pre-trained alternative for the temporal modeling of unseen locations. As bifacial solar installations gain dominance to fulfill the increasing demand for renewables, our proposed framework provides a hybrid modeling approach to build models with ground observations and satellite imagery for intra-day surface albedo monitoring and hence for intra-day energy gain modeling and bifacial deployment planning. Hydrous minerals are significant indicators of the ancient aqueous environment on Mars, and orbital hyperspectral data are one of the most effective tools for obtaining information about the distribution of hydrous minerals on the Martian surface. However, prolonged weathering, erosion, and other external forces result in complex mixing effects, often weakening the spectral absorption features of individual minerals. This study proposes a quantitative inversion method for Martian hydrous minerals by integrating a radiative transfer model with a deep learning network. Based on the physics of the Hapke radiative transfer model, the single-scattering albedo spectra of mineral end members were obtained. Additionally, the Linear Spectral Mixture Model was employed to generate a large number of fully constrained mineral mixture samples, providing theoretical support for experimental data. An LSTM-1DCNN model was trained to establish a data-driven quantitative inversion framework. CRISM data were applied to the Eberswalde Crater region to retrieve the abundances of 21 hydrous minerals, including tremolite, opal, and serpentine. The average abundance of hydrous minerals was calculated to be 0.018, with a total area proportion of approximately 8%. Additionally, by analyzing the distribution areas of hydrous silicates, hydrous sulfates, and hydrous hydroxides, the water activity history of the region was inferred. The results align with findings from related studies and mineral spectral index results. By incorporating deep learning into traditional mixing models, this study identifies the distribution of various low-abundance hydrous minerals, enhancing the accuracy of Martian hydrous mineral inversion. In this study, the global land surface albedo namely GAC43 was retrieved for the years 1979 to 2020 using Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) global area coverage (GAC) data onboard National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and Meteorological Operational (MetOp) satellites. We provide a comprehensive retrieval process of the GAC43 albedo, followed by a comprehensive assessment against in situ measurements and three widely used satellite-based albedo products, the third edition of the CM SAF cLoud, Albedo and surface RAdiation (CLARA-A3), the Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S) albedo product, and MODIS BRDF/albedo product (MCD43). Our quantitative evaluations indicate that GAC43 demonstrates the best stability, with a linear trend of ±0.002 per decade at nearly all pseudo invariant calibration sites (PICS) from 1982 to 2020. In contrast, CLARA-A3 exhibits significant noise before the 2000s due to the limited availability of observations, while C3S shows substantial biases during the same period due to imperfect sensors intercalibrations. Extensive validation at globally distributed homogeneous sites shows that GAC43 has comparable accuracy to C3S, with an overall RMSE of approximately 0.03, but a smaller positive bias of 0.012. Comparatively, MCD43C3 shows the lowest RMSE (~0.023) and minimal bias, while CLARA-A3 displays the highest RMSE (~0.042) and bias (0.02). Furthermore, GAC43, CLARA-A3, and C3S exhibit overestimation in forests, with positive biases exceeding 0.023 and RMSEs of at least 0.028. In contrast, MCD43C3 shows negligible bias and a smaller RMSE of 0.015. For grasslands and shrublands, GAC43 and MCD43C3 demonstrate comparable estimation uncertainties of approximately 0.023, with close positive biases near 0.09, whereas C3S and CLARA-A3 exhibit higher RMSEs and biases exceeding 0.032 and 0.022, respectively. All four albedo products show significant RMSEs around 0.035 over croplands but achieve the highest estimation accuracy better than 0.020 over deserts. It is worth noting that significant biases are typically attributed to insufficient spatial representativeness of the measurement sites. Globally, GAC43 and C3S exhibit similar spatial distribution patterns across most land surface conditions, including an overestimation compared to MCD43C3 and an underestimation compared to CLARA-A3 in forested areas. In addition, GAC43, C3S, and CLARA-A3 estimate higher albedo values than MCD43C3 in low-vegetation regions, such as croplands, grasslands, savannas, and woody savannas. Besides the fact that the new GAC43 product shows the best stability covering the last 40 years, one has to consider the higher proportion of backup inversions before 2000. Overall, GAC43 offers a promising long-term and consistent albedo with good accuracy for future studies such as global climate change, energy balance, and land management policy. This paper focuses on the analytical modeling of albedo reflection in bifacial photovoltaic modules, with particular emphasis on the backside. First, we critically examine the approaches proposed in the literature, presenting them with a tutorial style and a uniform nomenclature. These approaches are demonstrated to yield physically meaningless results, as they erroneously assume that the ground area shaded by the module acts as a source of reflected irradiance independent of the portion of sky dome visible to such an area. Then we introduce a correction based on the view factor between the shaded area and the sky. The result is a comprehensive and accurate analytical model that also describes the case of suspended panels and can be easily implemented into PV plant simulators. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In traditional 3D reconstruction using UAV images, only radiance information, which is treated as a geometric constraint, is used in feature matching, allowing for the restoration of the scene's structure. After introducing radiance supervision, NeRF can adjust the geometry in the fixed-ray direction, resulting in a smaller search space and higher robustness. Considering the lack of NeRF construction methods for aerial scenarios, we propose a new NeRF point sampling method, which is generated using a UAV imaging model, compatible with a global geographic coordinate system, and suitable for a UAV view. We found that NeRF is optimized entirely based on the radiance while ignoring the direct geometry constraint. Therefore, we designed a radiance correction strategy that considers the incidence angle. Our method can complete point sampling in a UAV imaging scene, as well as simultaneously perform digital surface model construction and ground radiance information recovery. When tested on self-acquired datasets, the NeRF variant proposed in this paper achieved better reconstruction accuracy than the original NeRF-based methods. It also reached a level of precision comparable to that of traditional photogrammetry methods, and it is capable of outputting a surface albedo that includes shadow information. High-precision lunar scene 3D data are essential for lunar exploration and the construction of scientific research stations. Currently, most existing data from orbital imagery offers resolutions up to 0.5–2 m, which is inadequate for tasks requiring centimeter-level precision. To overcome this, our research focuses on using in situ stereo vision systems for finer 3D reconstructions directly from the lunar surface. However, the scarcity and homogeneity of available lunar surface stereo datasets, combined with the Moon's unique conditions—such as variable lighting from low albedo, sparse surface textures, and extensive shadow occlusions—pose significant challenges to the effectiveness of traditional stereo matching techniques. To address the dataset gap, we propose a method using Unreal Engine 4 (UE4) for high-fidelity physical simulation of lunar surface scenes, generating high-resolution images under realistic and challenging conditions. Additionally, we propose an optimized cost calculation method based on Census transform and color intensity fusion, along with a multi-level super-pixel disparity optimization, to improve matching accuracy under harsh lunar conditions. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method exhibits exceptional robustness and accuracy in our soon-to-be-released multi-scene lunar dataset, effectively addressing issues related to special lighting conditions, weak textures, and shadow occlusion, ultimately enhancing disparity estimation accuracy. Glacier meltwater is an indispensable water supply for billions of people living in the catchments of major Asian rivers. However, the role of glaciers on river runoff regulation is seldom investigated due to the lack of annual glacier mass balance observation. In this study, we employed an albedo-based model with a daily land surface albedo dataset to derive the annual glacier mass balance over the Tuotuo River Basin (TRB). During 2000–2022, an annual glacier mass balance range of −0.89 ± 0.08 to 0.11 ± 0.11 m w.e. was estimated. By comparing with river runoff records from the hydrometric station, the contribution of glacier mass change to river runoff was calculated to be 0.00–31.14% for the studied period, with a mean value of 9.97%. Moreover, we found that the mean contribution in drought years is 20.07%, which is approximately five times that in wet years (4.30%) and twice that in average years (9.49%). Therefore, our results verify that mountain glaciers act as a significant buffer against drought in the TRB, at least during the 2000–2022 period. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The present study aimed to find solutions based on the use of plant-based ingredients that would improve the nutritional quality of meat products as well as ensure sensory and microbiological quality. Two fat replacers, lemon albedo (Citrus lemon) and carob seed gum (Ceratonia siliqua), were investigated by chemical analysis and panel testing to evaluate their effect on the nutritional and sensory quality of beef burgers. The antimicrobial activity of two plant extracts, from nettle (Urtica dioica) leaves and medlar (Eriobotrya japonica) seeds, was studied, evaluating the intensity of inhibitory action and the minimum inhibitory concentration against Pseudomonas spp. and Listeria innocua strains by plate test. In addition, the antioxidant activity of both extracts was evaluated. Based on the results, lemon albedo and medlar seed extracts were validated in a food model (beef burger) by a storage test and a challenge test. The storage test results highlight that medlar seed extract prevents the formation of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARSs) and ensures microbiological quality, inhibiting Enterobacteriaceae and Pseudomonas spp. Anti-Listeria efficacy was confirmed in situ by challenge test results. In conclusion, although fat replacers ensure nutritional and sensory quality, they do not satisfy microbiological quality. This study clearly demonstrates that the safety of low-fat burgers can only be achieved through the combination of appropriate fat replacers with well-selected natural antimicrobial extracts. Black carbon (BC) aerosols have attracted wide attention over the world due to their significant climate effects on local and global scales. BC extinction aerosol optical thickness (AOT), scattering AOT, and single scattering albedo (SSA) over China are systematically studied based on the MERRA-2 satellite reanalysis data from 1983 to 2022 in terms of the spatial, yearly, seasonal, and monthly variations. The extinction and scattering AOTs of BC show similar spatial distribution, with high values in eastern and southern China, generally as opposed to BC SSA. A decrease in BC extinction and scattering AOTs has been documented over the last decade. The mean BC extinction AOT, scattering AOT, and SSA over China are 0.0054, 0.0014, and 0.26, respectively. The BC SSA showed small variations during 1983–2022, although a high BC extinction AOT and scattering AOT have been seen in the last two decades. During different decades, the seasonal patterns of BC extinction and scattering AOTs may differ, whereas the BC SSA shows seasonal consistency. Significant monthly variations in the BC SSA are seen over four decades, which are in agreement with their seasonal patterns. The mean BC extinction AOTs are 0.037, 0.033, 0.023, and 0.0054, whereas the average BC scattering AOTs are 0.0088, 0.0082, 0.0060, and 0.0014 in the Pearl River Delta (PRD), Yangtze River Delta (YRD), Beijing–Tianjin–Hebei (BTH) region, and Tarim Basin (TB), respectively. It is interesting to see that BC SSA values in the TB region are generally higher than those over the PRD, YRD and BTH areas, whereas the reverse is true for BC extinction and scattering AOTs. Limoncella of Mattinata, a rare and ancient Mediterranean citrus fruit, was investigated by sequence analysis of the ribosomal internal transcribed spacer regions, which assigns it as a variety of Citrus medica L. Morphological, chemical, and biomolecular approaches, including light and electron microscopy, HPLC-ESI-MS/MS, and antioxidant and anti-inflammatory assays, were used to characterize the flavedo and albedo parts, usually rich in bioactive compounds. The morphological findings showed albedo and flavedo cellular structures as "reservoirs" of nutritional components. Both albedo and flavedo hydroalcoholic extracts were rich in polyphenols, but they were different in compounds and quantity. The flavedo is rich in p-coumaric acid and rutin, whereas the albedo contains high levels of hesperidin and quercitrin. Antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and genoprotective effects for albedo and flavedo were found. The results confirmed the health properties of flavedo and highlighted that albedo is also a rich source of antioxidants. The measurement of globe temperature (GT) is essential for investigating pedestrian thermal comfort in street canyons. The globe thermometer is the most common instrument used to measure GT; however, its application in scale models has not been thoroughly investigated to date. Therefore, this study explicitly investigates globe thermometer measurements in scale models and analyzes the need for customization of the globe thermometer for more reliable measurements. Scaling down with respect to the size of the globe thermometer and the effect of solar orientation/envelope materials are investigated in this study. The initial experiments were carried out in an outdoor setting using a typical street canyon model (scale 1:100) with an east-west street orientation. The results of the experiment are presented to compare a low solar reflectance street canyon (albedo of 0.4) and a high solar reflectance canyon (albedo of 0.6) in terms of surface temperatures, heat flux, and globe temperature. It is observed that although the wall and road surface temperatures are lower for the high solar reflectance canyon compared to those for the low solar reflectance canyon, the GT (measured at pedestrian height) is higher in a high reflectance canyon during the daytime, which could be due to the combined effect of direct radiation and short-wave reflection. However, for the hours after sunset, a reverse effect is observed, i.e., the GT becomes lower (up to 0.8 °C) in the case of a high reflectance canyon compared to that for the low reflectance canyon. Furthermore, the study emphasizes the impact of solar reflectance of canyon surfaces on GT values, due to the view factors that the globe thermometer on those surfaces. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Albedo is a primary driver of the glacier surface energy balance and consequent melting. As glacier albedo decreases, it further accelerates glacier melting. Over the past 20 years, glaciers on the Tibetan Plateau have experienced significant melting. However, our understanding of the variations in glacier albedo and its driving factors in this region remains limited. This study used MOD10A1 data to examine the average characteristics and variations in glacier albedo on the Tibetan Plateau from 2001 to 2022; the MOD10A1 snow cover product, developed at the National Snow and Ice Data Center, was employed to analyze spatiotemporal variations in surface albedo. The results indicate that the albedo values of glaciers on the Tibetan Plateau predominantly range between 0.50 and 0.60, with distinctly higher albedo in spring and winter, and lower albedo in summer and autumn. Glacier albedo on the Tibetan Plateau decreased at an average linear regression rate of 0.06 × 10−2 yr−1 over the past two decades, with the fastest declines occurring in autumn at an average rate of 0.18 × 10−2 yr−1, contributing to the prolongation of the melting period. Furthermore, significant variations in albedo change rates with altitude were found near the snowline, which is attributed to the transformation of the snow and ice surface. The primary factors affecting glacier albedo on the Tibetan Plateau are temperature and snowfall, whereas in the Himalayas, black carbon and dust primarily influence glacier albedo. Our findings reveal a clear decrease in glacier albedo on the Tibetan Plateau and demonstrate that seasonal and spatial variations in albedo and temperature are the most important driving factors. Surface albedo plays a pivotal role in the Earth's energy balance and climate. This study conducted an analysis of the spatial distribution patterns and temporal evolution of albedo, normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), normalized difference snow index snow cover (NSC), and land surface temperature (LST) within the Qilian Mountains (QLMs) from 2001 to 2022. This study evaluated the spatiotemporal correlations of albedo with NSC, NDVI, and LST at various temporal scales. Additionally, the study quantified the driving forces and relative contributions of topographic and natural factors to the albedo variation of the QLMs using geographic detectors. The findings revealed the following insights: (1) Approximately 22.8% of the QLMs exhibited significant changes in albedo. The annual average albedo and NSC exhibited a minor decline with rates of −0.00037 and −0.05083 (Sen's slope), respectively. Conversely, LST displayed a marginal increase at a rate of 0.00564, while NDVI experienced a notable increase at a rate of 0.00178. (2) The seasonal fluctuations of NSC, LST, and vegetation collectively influenced the overall albedo changes in the Qilian Mountains. Notably, the highly similar trends and significant correlations between albedo and NSC, whether in intra-annual monthly variations, multi-year monthly anomalies, or regional multi-year mean trends, indicate that the changes in snow albedo reflected by NSC played a major role. Additionally, the area proportion and corresponding average elevation of PSI (permanent snow and ice regions) slightly increased, potentially suggesting a slow upward shift of the high mountain snowline in the QLMs. (3) NDVI, land cover type (LCT), and the Digital Elevation Model (DEM, which means elevation) played key roles in shaping the spatial pattern of albedo. As photovoltaic (PV) deployment increases worldwide, PV systems are being installed more frequently in locations that experience snow cover. The higher albedo of snow, relative to the ground, increases the performance of PV systems in northern and high-altitude locations by reflecting more light onto the PV modules. Accurate modeling of the snow's albedo can improve estimates of PV system production. Typical modeling of snow albedo uses a simple two-value model that sets the albedo high when snow is present, and low when snow is not present. However, snow albedo changes over time as snow settles and melts and a binary model does not account for transitional changes, which can be significant. Here, we present and validate a model for estimating snow albedo as it changes over time. The model is simple enough to only require daily snow depth and hourly average temperature data, but can be improved through the addition of site-specific factors, when available. We validate this model to quantify its ability to more accurately predict snow albedo and compare the model's performance against satellite imagery-based methods for obtaining historical albedo data. In addition, we perform modeling using the System Advisor Model (SAM) to show the impact of changes in albedo on energy modeling for PV systems. Overall, our albedo model has a significantly improved ability to predict the solar insolation on PV modules in real time, especially on bifacial PV modules where reflected irradiance plays a larger role in energy production. Past studies have reported a decreasing planetary albedo and an increasing absorption of solar radiation by Earth since the early 1980s, and especially since 2000. This should have contributed to the observed surface warming. However, the magnitude of such solar contribution is presently unknown, and the question of whether or not an enhanced uptake of shortwave energy by the planet represents positive feedback to an initial warming induced by rising greenhouse-gas concentrations has not conclusively been answered. The IPCC 6th Assessment Report also did not properly assess this issue. Here, we quantify the effect of the observed albedo decrease on Earth's Global Surface Air Temperature (GSAT) since 2000 using measurements by the Clouds and the Earth's Radiant Energy System (CERES) project and a novel climate-sensitivity model derived from independent NASA planetary data by employing objective rules of calculus. Our analysis revealed that the observed decrease of planetary albedo along with reported variations of the Total Solar Irradiance (TSI) explain 100% of the global warming trend and 83% of the GSAT interannual variability as documented by six satellite- and ground-based monitoring systems over the past 24 years. Changes in Earth's cloud albedo emerged as the dominant driver of GSAT, while TSI only played a marginal role. The new climate sensitivity model also helped us analyze the physical nature of the Earth's Energy Imbalance (EEI) calculated as a difference between absorbed shortwave and outgoing longwave radiation at the top of the atmosphere. Observations and model calculations revealed that EEI results from a quasi-adiabatic attenuation of surface energy fluxes traveling through a field of decreasing air pressure with altitude. In other words, the adiabatic dissipation of thermal kinetic energy in ascending air parcels gives rise to an apparent EEI, which does not represent "heat trapping" by increasing atmospheric greenhouse gases as currently assumed. The albedo of boreal forests depends on the properties of the forest and is a key parameter for understanding the climate impact of forest management practices at high northern latitudes. While high-resolution albedo retrievals from satellites remain challenging, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) offer the ability to obtain albedo corresponding to the typical size of forest stands or even smaller areas, such as forest plots. Plots and pixels of sizes in the typical range of 200–400 m2 are used as the basic units in forest management in the Nordic countries. In this study, the aim was to evaluate the effect of the differences in the footprint size of the measured albedo and fixed-area forest plots on the relationship between albedo and forest attributes. This was performed by examining the correlation between albedo and field-measured forest attributes and metrics derived from airborne laser scanner data using linear regression models. The albedo was measured by a UAV above 400 m2, circular forest plots (n = 128) for seven different flight heights above the top of the canopy. The flight heights were chosen so the plots were always smaller than the footprint of the measured albedo, and the area of a forest plot constituted 30–90% of the measured albedo. The applied pyranometer aboard the UAV measured the albedo according to a cosine response across the footprint. We found the strongest correlation when there was the greatest correspondence between the spatial size of the albedo footprint and the size of the forest plots, i.e., when the target area constituted 80–90% of the measured albedo. The measured albedo of the plots in both regeneration forests and mature forests were highly sensitive (p-values ≤ 0.001) to the footprint size, with a mean albedo difference of 11% between the smallest and largest footprints. The mean albedo of regeneration forests was 33% larger than that of mature forests for footprint sizes corresponding to 90%. During wintertime temperature inversion episodes, ozone in the Uinta Basin sometimes exceeds the standard of 70 ppb set by the US Environmental Protection Agency. Since ozone formation depends on sunlight, and less sunlight is available during winter, wintertime ozone can only form if snow cover and albedo are high. Researchers have encountered difficulties replicating high albedo values in 3-D weather and photochemical transport model simulations for winter episodes. In this study, a process to assimilate MODIS satellite data into WRF and CAMx models was developed, streamlined, and tested to demonstrate the impacts of data assimilation on the models' performance. Improvements to the WRF simulation of surface albedo and snow cover were substantial. However, the impact of MODIS data assimilation on WRF performance for other meteorological quantities was minimal, and it had little impact on ozone concentrations in the CAMx photochemical transport model. The contrast between the data assimilation and reference cases was greater for a period with no new snow since albedo appears to decrease too rapidly in default WRF and CAMx configurations. Overall, the improvement from MODIS data assimilation had an observed enhancement in the spatial distribution and temporal evolution of surface characteristics on meteorological quantities and ozone production. This study investigates the performance of isotropic and anisotropic diffuse models to estimate the total solar energy received on flat-plate collectors fixed on dual-axis trackers. These estimations are applied at twelve sites selected in both hemispheres with different terrain and environmental conditions. The diffuse (or transposition) models used in this study are the isotropic Liu-Jordan (L&J), Koronakis (KOR), Badescu (BAD), and Tian (TIA), and the anisotropic Hay (HAY), Reindl (REI), Klucher (KLU), Skartveit and Olseth (S&O), and Steven and Unsworth (S&U). These models were chosen because of their simplicity in the calculations and minimum number of input values. The results show that a single transposition model is not efficient for all sites; therefore, the most appropriate models are selected for each site under all, clear, intermediate, and overcast conditions in skies. On the other hand, an increase in the ground albedo in the vicinity of the solar installation can increase the annual inclined solar availability on a two-axis tracker by at least 9% on average. Further, a linear dependence of the annual inclined solar energy on the variation of the ground albedo was found. Surface albedo measures the proportion of incoming solar radiation reflected by the Earth's surface. Accurate albedo retrieval from remote sensing data usually requires sufficient multi-angular observations to account for the surface reflectance anisotropy. However, most middle and high-resolution remote sensing satellites lack the capability to acquire sufficient multi-angular observations. Existing algorithms for retrieving surface albedo from single-direction reflectance typically rely on land cover types and vegetation indices to extract the corresponding prior knowledge of surface anisotropic reflectance from coarse-resolution Bidirectional Reflectance Distribution Function (BRDF) products. This study introduces an algorithm for retrieving albedo from directional reflectance based on a 3 × 3 BRDF archetype database established using the 2015 global time-series Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectro-radiometer (MODIS) BRDF product. For different directions, BRDF archetypes are applied to the simulated MODIS directional reflectance to retrieve albedo. By comparing the retrieved albedos with the MODIS albedo, the BRDF archetype that yields the smallest Root Mean Squared Error (RMSE) is selected as the prior BRDF for the direction. A lookup table (LUT) that contains the optimal BRDF archetypes for albedo retrieval under various observational geometries is established. The impact of the number of BRDF archetypes on the accuracy of albedo is analyzed according to the 2020 MODIS BRDF. The LUT is applied to the MODIS BRDF within specific BRDF archetype classes to validate its applicability under different anisotropic reflectance characteristics. The applicability of the LUT across different data types is further evaluated using simulated reflectance or real multi-angular measurements. The results indicate that (1) for any direction, a specific BRDF archetype can retrieve a high-accuracy albedo from directional reflectance. The optimal BRDF archetype varies with the observation direction. (2) Compared to the prior BRDF knowledge obtained through averaging method, the BRDF archetype LUT based on the 3 × 3 BRDF archetype database can more accurately retrieve the surface albedo. Japanese mandarins are becoming increasingly popular due to their pleasant aroma. The volatiles in four varieties of Japanese mandarins (Iyokan, Ponkan, Shiranui, and Unshiu mikan) were extracted by headspace solid-phase microextraction (HS-SPME) and solvent extraction, then analysed by gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Principal component analysis (PCA) of the GC-MS data demonstrated distinct segregation of all four Japanese mandarin varieties. Esters, such as neryl acetate, distinguished Iyokan. Methylthymol uniquely characterised Ponkan, valencene was exclusive to Shiranui, and acids like hexanoic acid and heptanoic acid differentiated Unshiu mikan from the other three varieties. Aroma extract dilution analysis (AEDA) revealed 131 key odourants across four Japanese mandarins, including myrcene (peppery, terpenic), perillyl alcohol (green, spicy, floral), trans-nerolidol (sweet, floral), and trans-farnesol (woody, floral, green). Finally, sensory evaluation was conducted on the four Japanese mandarin peel extracts to describe the distinct aroma profile of each variety of Japanese mandarin: Iyokan had higher floral and juicy notes, Ponkan showed higher sulphury notes, Shiranui was perceived to have more albedo notes, and Unshiu mikan exhibited higher peely, green, and woody notes. In the convolutional retinex approach to image lightness processing, an image is filtered by a centre/surround operator that is designed to mitigate the effects of shading (illumination gradients), which in turn compresses the dynamic range. Typically, the parameters that define the shape and extent of the filter are tuned to provide visually pleasing results, and a mapping function such as a logarithm is included for further image enhancement. In contrast, a statistical approach to convolutional retinex has recently been introduced, which is based upon known or estimated autocorrelation statistics of the image albedo and shading components. By introducing models for the autocorrelation matrices and solving a linear regression, the optimal filter is obtained in closed form. Unlike existing methods, the aim is simply to objectively mitigate shading, and so image enhancement components such as a logarithmic mapping function are not included. Here, the full mathematical details of the method are provided, along with implementation details. Significantly, it is shown that the shapes of the autocorrelation matrices directly impact the shape of the optimal filter. A critical comprehension of the impact of snow cover on urban bidirectional reflectance is pivotal for precise assessments of energy budgets, radiative forcing, and urban climate change. This study develops a numerical model that employs the Monte Carlo ray-tracing technique and a snow anisotropic reflectance model (ART) to simulate spectral albedo and bidirectional reflectance, accounting for urban structure and snow anisotropy. Validation using three flat surfaces and MODIS data (snow-free, fresh snow, and melting snow scenarios) revealed minimal errors: the maximum domain-averaged BRDF bias was 0.01% for flat surfaces, and the overall model-MODIS deviation was less than 0.05. The model's performance confirmed its accuracy in reproducing the reflectance spectrum. A thorough investigation of key factors affecting bidirectional reflectance in snow-covered urban canyons ensued, with snow coverage found to be the dominant influence. Urban coverage, building height, and soot pollutant concentration significantly impact visible and infrared reflectance, while snow grain size has the greatest effect on shortwave infrared. The bidirectional reflectance at backward scattering angles (0.5–0.6) at 645 nm is lower than forward scattering (around 0.8) in the principal plane as snow grain size increases. These findings contribute to a deeper understanding of snow-covered urban canyons' reflectance characteristics and facilitate the quantification of radiation interactions, cloud-snow discrimination, and satellite-based retrieval of aerosol and snow parameters. Aerosol microphysical properties, including aerosol particle size distribution, complex refractive index and concentration properties, are key parameters evaluating the impact of aerosols on climate, meteorology, and human health. High Spectral Resolution Lidar (HSRL) is an efficient tool for probing the vertical optical properties of aerosol particles, including the aerosol backscatter coefficient (β) and extinction coefficient (α), at multiple wavelengths. To swiftly process vast data volumes, address the ill-posedness of retrieval problems, and suit simpler lidar systems, this study proposes an algorithm (modified algorithm) for retrieving microphysical property profiles from the HSRL optical data targeting fine-mode aerosols, building upon a previous algorithm (basic algorithm). The modified algorithm is based on a look-up table (LUT) approach, combined with the k-nearest neighbor (k-NN) and random forest (RF) algorithms, and it optimizes the decision tree generation strategy, incorporating a self-posed scheme. In numerical simulation tests for different lidar configurations, the modified algorithm reduced retrieval errors by 41%, 30%, and 32% compared to the basic algorithm for 3β + 2α, 3β + 1α, and 2β + 1α, respectively, with a remarkable improvement of stability. In two observation scenes of a field campaign, the median relative errors of the effective radius for 3β + 2α were 6% and −3%, and the median absolute errors of single-scattering albedo were 0.012 and 0.005. This method represents a further step toward the use of the LUT approach, with the potential to provide effective and efficient aerosol microphysical retrieval for simpler lidar systems, which could advance our understanding of aerosols' climatic, meteorological, and health impacts. The soil moisture at the medium spatial scale is strongly desired in the context of satellite remote sensing data validation. The use of a ground-installed passive L-band radiometer ELBARA at the Bubnów-Sęków test site in the east of Poland gave a possibility to provide reference soil moisture data from the area with a radius of 100 m. In addition, the test site comprised three different land cover types that could be investigated continuously with one day resolution. The studies were focused on the evaluation of the ω-τ model coefficients for three types of land cover, including meadow, wetland, and cropland, to allow for the assessment of the soil moisture retrievals at a medium scale. Consequently, a set of reference time-dependent coefficients of effective scattering albedo, optical depth, and constant-in-time roughness parameters were estimated. The mean annual values of the effective scattering albedo including two polarisations were 0.45, 0.26, 0.14, and 0.54 for the meadow with lower organic matter, the meadow with higher organic matter, the wetland, and the cropland, respectively. The values of optical depth were in the range from 0.30 to 0.80 for the cropland, from 0.40 to 0.52 for the meadows (including the two investigated meadows), and from 0.60 to 0.70 for the wetland. The latest versions of the Ross-Li model include kernels that represent isotropic reflection of the surface, describe backward reflection of soil and vegetation systems, characterize strong forward reflection of snow, and adequately consider the hotspot effect (i.e., RossThick-LiSparseReciprocalChen-Snow, RTLSRCS), theoretically able to effectively characterize BRDF/Albedo/NBAR features for various land surface types. However, a systematic evaluation of the RTLSRCS model is still lacking for various land cover types. In this paper, we conducted a thorough assessment of the RTLSRCS and RossThick-LiSparseReciprocalChen (RTLSRC) models in characterizing BRDF/Albedo/NBAR characteristics by using the global POLDER BRDF database. The primary highlights of this paper include the following: (1) Both models demonstrate high accuracy in characterizing the BRDF characteristics across 16 IGBP types. However, the accuracy of the RTLSRC model is notably reduced for land cover types with high reflectance and strong forward reflection characteristics, such as Snow and Ice (SI), Deciduous Needleleaf Forests (DNF), and Barren or Sparsely Vegetated (BSV). In contrast, the RTLSRCS model shows a significant improvement in accuracy for these land cover types. (2) These two models exhibit highly consistent albedo inversion across various land cover types (R2 > 0.9), particularly in black-sky and blue-sky albedo, except for SI. However, significant differences in white-sky albedo inversion persist between these two models for Evergreen Needleleaf Forests (ENF), Evergreen Broadleaf Forests (EBF), Urban Areas (UA), and SI (p < 0.05). (3) The NBAR values inverted by these two models are nearly identical across the other 15 land cover types. However, the consistency of NBAR results is relatively poor for SI. The RTLSRC model tends to overestimate compared to the RTLSRCS model, with a noticeable bias of approximately 0.024. A new algorithm is proposed to estimate the cooling amplitude over North China induced by each Ural blocking event. Taking full account of potential transient temperature rises during the cooling process and the lag time of cooling relative to the blocking, this algorithm provides more detailed analysis which should not be possible by using former methods. The amplitude of the Ural blocking-related cooling events is found to have a broad distribution. Further, although most Ural blocking events lead to severe cold surges over North China, the number of Ural blocking events that do not induce significant cooling over North China cannot be ignored. The possible reasons for the wide range in cooling amplitude are explored in terms of the lifetimes and geographical centers of the blocking highs, the circulation patterns preceding the onset of the cooling events, and the snowfall associated with cooling events. Larger amplitude cooling events occur in Ural blocking highs that have longer lifetimes and northwestward displacements of their geographical centers. The northward displacement of a Ural blocking center favors the advection of extremely cold air from the Arctic regions, which accumulates in West Siberia and subsequently gives rise to the most severe cold surges over North China. The lack of activities of cold surges before the blocking-related cooling events not only amplifies the cooling amplitude directly, but also increases the occurrence probabilities of snowfalls through its modulation on the local specific humidity. Assessing the regional mass balance of European glaciers presents significant challenges due to limited measurements. While various albedo methods have been explored for individual glaciers, a comprehensive analysis of aggregated albedo methods is lacking. Addressing this gap, in our study, we examined five MODIS aggregated albedos (raw average, minimum average, average minimum, interpolated average, and cumulative) versus the annual mass balance for 12 Austrian and Norwegian glaciers from 2001 to 2020 to establish connections between them. We find that the raw average albedo is strongly correlated with the annual mass balance of Austrian glaciers (r = 0.91), while the interpolated average albedo is significantly correlated with the annual mass balance of Norwegian glaciers (r = 0.90). Moreover, we observe that high-elevation glaciers experience fewer cloud cover days, allowing the raw average albedo to reliably estimate the annual mass balance, whereas low-elevation glaciers are often obscured by clouds, potentially masking the true minimum albedo. Additionally, traditional indicators, such as the equilibrium-line altitude and accumulation area ratio, exhibit significant correlations with the annual mass balance of Norwegian and Austrian glaciers (r = 0.90 and 0.87, respectively), yet albedo demonstrates higher robustness. As a new vegetation monitoring index, the KNDVI has certain advantages in characterizing the evolutionary process of regional desertification. However, there are few reports on desertification monitoring based on KNDVI and feature space models. In this study, seven feature parameters, including the kernel normalized difference vegetation index (KNDVI) and Albedo, were introduced to construct different models for desertification remote-sensing monitoring. The optimal desertification remote-sensing monitoring index model was determined with the measured data; then, the spatiotemporal evolution pattern of desertification in Gulang County from 2013 to 2023 was analyzed and revealed. The main conclusions were as follows: (1) Compared with the NDVI and MSAVI, the KNDVI showed more advantages in the characterization of the desertification evolution process. (2) The point–line pattern KNDVI-Albedo remote-sensing index model had the highest monitoring accuracy, reaching 94.93%, while the point–line pattern NDVI-TGSI remote-sensing monitoring index had the lowest accuracy of 54.38%. (3) From 2013 to 2023, the overall desertification situation in Gulang County showed a trend of improvement with a pattern of "firstly aggravation and then alleviation." Additionally, the gravity center of desertification in Gulang County first shifted to the southeast and then to the northeast, indicating that the northeast's aggravating rate of desertification was higher than in the southwest during the period. (4) From 2013 to 2023, the area of stable desertification in Gulang County was the largest, followed by the slightly weakened zone, and the most significant transition area was that of extreme desertification to severe desertification. Accurate and continuous estimation of surface albedo is vital for assessing and understanding land–surface–atmosphere interactions. We developed a method for estimating instantaneous all-sky at-surface shortwave upwelling radiance and albedo over the Tibetan Plateau. The method accounts for the complex interplay of topography and atmospheric interactions and aims to mitigate the occurrence of data gaps. Employing an RTLSR-kernel-driven model, we retrieved surface shortwave albedo with a 1 km resolution, incorporating direct, isotropic diffuse; circumsolar diffuse; and surrounding terrain irradiance into the all-sky solar surface irradiance. The at-surface upwelling radiance and surface shortwave albedo estimates were in satisfactory agreement with ground observations at four stations in the Tibetan Plateau, with RMSE values of 56.5 W/m2 and 0.0422, 67.6 W/m2 and 0.0545, 98.6 W/m2 and 0.0992, and 78.0 98.6 W/m2 and 0.639. This comparison indicated an improved accuracy of at-surface upwelling radiance and surface albedo and significantly reduced data gaps. Valid observations increased substantially in comparison to the MCD43A2 data product, with the new method achieving an increase ranging from 40% to 200% at the four stations. Our study demonstrates that by integrating terrain, cloud properties, and radiative transfer modeling, the accuracy and completeness of retrieved surface albedo and radiance in complex terrains can be effectively improved. The sea ice albedo can amplify global climate change and affect the surface energy in the Arctic. In this paper, the data from Visible and Infra-Red Radiometer (VIRR) onboard Fengyun-3C satellite are applied to derive the Arctic sea ice albedo. Two radiative transfer models, namely, 6S and FluxNet, are used to simulate the reflectance and albedo in the shortwave band. Clear sky sea ice albedo in the Arctic region (60°~90°N) from 2016 to 2019 is derived through the physical process, including data preprocessing, narrowband to broadband conversion, anisotropy correction, and atmospheric correction. The results are compared with aircraft measurements and AVHRR Polar Pathfinder-Extended (APP-x) albedo product and OLCI MPF product. The bias and standard deviation of the difference between VIRR albedo and aircraft measurements are −0.040 and 0.071, respectively. Compared with APP-x product and OLCI MPF product, a good consistency of albedo is shown. And analyzed together with melt pond fraction, an obvious negative relationship can be seen. After processing the 4-year data, an obvious annual trend can be observed. Due to the influence of snow on the ice surface, the average surface albedo of the Arctic in March and April can reach more than 0.8. Starting in May, with the ice and snow melting and melt ponds forming, the albedo drops rapidly to 0.5–0.6. Into August, the melt ponds begin to freeze and the surface albedo increases. Urban surfaces play a crucial role in shaping the Urban Heat Island (UHI) effect by absorbing and retaining significant solar radiation. This paper explores the potential of high-resolution satellite imagery as an alternative method for characterizing urban surfaces to support UHI mitigation strategies in urban redevelopment plans. We utilized Landsat images spanning the past 40 years to analyze trends in Land Surface Temperature (LST). Additionally, WorldView-3 (WV3) imagery was acquired for surface characterization, and the results were compared with ground truth measurements using the ASD FieldSpec 4 spectroradiometer. Our findings revealed a strong correlation between satellite-derived surface reflectance and ground truth measurements across various urban surfaces, with Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) values ranging from 0.01 to 0.14. Optimal characterization was observed for surfaces such as bituminous membranes and parking with cobblestones (RMSE < 0.03), although higher RMSE values were noted for tiled roofs, likely due to aging effects. Regarding surface albedo, the differences between satellite-derived data and ground measurements consistently remained below 12% for all surfaces, with the lowest values observed in high heat-absorbing surfaces like bituminous membranes. Despite challenges on certain surfaces, our study highlights the reliability of satellite-derived data for urban surface characterization, thus providing valuable support for UHI mitigation efforts. In this work, satellite data from the Clouds and Earth's Radiant Energy System (CERES) and Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) instruments are analyzed to determine how the global absorbed sunlight and global entropy production rates have changed from 2002 to 2023. The data is used to test hypotheses derived from the Maximum Power Principle (MPP) and Maximum Entropy Production Principle (MEP) about the evolution of Earth's surface and atmosphere. The results indicate that both the rate of absorbed sunlight and global entropy production have increased over the last 20 years, which is consistent with the predictions of both hypotheses. Anthropogenic climate change is increasing the occurrence of wildfires, especially in northern high latitudes, leading to a shift in land surface climate. This study aims to determine the predominant climatic effects of fires in boreal forests to assess their impact on vegetation composition, surface albedo, and snow dynamics. The influence of fire-induced changes on Earth's radiative forcing is investigated, while considering variations in burn severity and postfire vegetation structure. Six burn sites are explored in central Alaska's boreal region, alongside six control sites, by utilizing Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS)-derived albedo, Leaf Area Index (LAI), snowmelt timing data, AmeriFlux radiation, National Land Cover Database (NLCD) land cover, and Monitoring Trends in Burn Severity (MTBS) data. Key findings reveal significant postfire shifts in land cover at each site, mainly from high- to low-stature vegetation. A continuous increase in postfire surface albedo and negative surface shortwave forcing was noted even after 12 years postfire, particularly during the spring and at high-severity burn areas. Results indicate that the cooling effect from increased albedo during the snow season may surpass the warming effects of earlier snowmelt. Novel view synthesis using neural radiance fields (NeRFs) for remote sensing images is important for various applications. Traditional methods often use implicit representations for modeling, which have slow rendering speeds and cannot directly obtain the structure of the 3D scene. Some studies have introduced explicit representations, such as point clouds and voxels, but this kind of method often produces holes when processing large-scale scenes from remote sensing images. In addition, NeRFs with explicit 3D expression are more susceptible to transient phenomena (shadows and dynamic objects) and even plane holes. In order to address these issues, we propose an improved method for synthesizing new views of remote sensing images based on Point-NeRF. Our main idea focuses on two aspects: filling in the spatial structure and reconstructing ray-marching rendering using shadow information. First, we introduce hole detection, conducting inverse projection to acquire candidate points that are adjusted during training to fill the holes. We also design incremental weights to reduce the probability of pruning the plane points. We introduce a geometrically consistent shadow model based on a point cloud to divide the radiance into albedo and irradiance, allowing the model to predict the albedo of each point, rather than directly predicting the radiance. Intuitively, our proposed method uses a sparse point cloud generated with traditional methods for initialization and then builds the dense radiance field. We evaluate our method on the LEVIR_NVS data set, demonstrating its superior performance compared to state-of-the-art methods. Ultraviolet radiation (UV) has strong chemical and biological effects on human health and ecosystems, and it plays an important role in the atmospheric environment by affecting photochemical processes, etc. Clouds and aerosols are the main factors affecting UV radiation and analyzing the quantitative impact of them on UV radiation is of great significance. Using the observation data of UV radiation in Beijing from 2005 to 2020, as well as the data of aerosol optical depth (AOD), single scattering albedo (SSA), and other related parameters, this paper simulated the surface UV radiation in two scenarios of cloudless without aerosol and cloudless with aerosol based on the TUV (Tropospheric Ultraviolet-Visible model), and quantitatively evaluated the attenuation of UV radiation by aerosol and cloud in the Beijing area. The results show that UV radiation is more sensitive to changes in AOD. Fixing the SSA value to 0.9, when the AOD increases from 0.2 to 1.0, the UV radiation decreases from 21.16 W/m2 to 12.64 W/m2 at 12:00; when AOD is maintained at 0.64, the SSA increases from 0.7 to 0.95, and the UV radiation increases from 14.55 W/m2 to 19.91 W/m2. The average annual attenuation rates of ultraviolet radiation by aerosols and clouds from 2005 to 2020 are 30.64% and 40.22%, respectively; the monthly averaged attenuation rates are 30.48% and 42.04%, respectively; and the daily averaged attenuation rates are 31.02% and 50.45%, respectively. The aim of this work is to provide a full description of how air temperature and solar radiation induce changes in the land cover over an Antarctic site. We use shortwave broadband albedo (albedo integrated in the range 300–3000 nm) from a spaceborne sensor and from field surveys to calculate the monthly relative abundance of landscape units. Field albedo data were collected in January 2019 using a portable albedometer over seven landscape units: clean fresh snow; clean old snow; rugged landscape composed of dirty snow with disperse pyroclasts and rocky outcrops; dirty snow; stripes of bare soil and snow; shallow snow with small bare soil patches; and bare soil. The MODIS MCD43A3 daily albedo products were downloaded using the Google Earth Engine API from the 2000–2001 season to the 2020–2021 season. Each landscape unit was characterized by an albedo normal distribution. The monthly relative abundances of the landscape units were calculated by fitting a linear combination of the normal distributions to a histogram of the MODIS monthly mean albedo. The monthly relative abundance of the landscape unit consisting of rugged landscape composed of dirty snow with dispersed clasts and small rocky outcrops exhibits a high positive linear correlation with the monthly mean albedo (R2 = 0.87) and a high negative linear correlation with the monthly mean air temperature (R2 = 0.69). The increase in the solar radiation energy flux from September to December coincides with the decrease in the relative abundance of the landscape unit composed of dirty snow with dispersed clasts and small rocky outcrops. We propose a mechanism to describe the evolution of the landscape: uncovered pyroclasts act as melting centers favoring the melting of surrounding snow. Ash does not play a decisive role in the melting of the snow. On the analysis of solar radiation and meteorological variables measured in Ankara province in Türkiye from 2017 to 2018, an empirical model of global solar radiation was developed. The global solar radiation at the ground and at the top of the atmosphere (TOA) was calculated and in good agreement with the observations. This model was applied to compute the losses of global solar radiation in the atmosphere and the contributions by atmospheric absorbing and scattering substances. The loss of global solar radiation in the atmosphere was dominated by the absorbing substances. The sensitivity test showed that global solar radiation was more sensitive to changes in scattering (described by a scattering factor S/G, S and G are diffuse and global solar radiation, respectively) than to changes in absorption. This empirical model was applied to calculate the albedos at the TOA and the surface. In 2017, 2018, and 2019, the computed albedos were 28.8%, 27.8%, and 28.2% at the TOA and 21.6%, 22.1%, and 21.9% at the surface, which were in reasonable agreement with satellite retrievals. The empirical model is a useful tool for studying global solar radiation and the multiple interactions between solar energy and atmospheric substances. The comparisons of global solar radiation and its loss in the atmosphere, as well as meteorological parameters, were made at some representative sites on the Earth. Some internal relationships (between G and the absorbing and scattering substances, air temperature and atmospheric substances, air temperature increase and latitude, etc.) were found. Thus, it is suggested to thoroughly study solar radiation, atmospheric substances, and climate change as a whole system and reduce the direct emissions of all atmospheric substances and, subsequently, secondary products (e.g., CO2 and non-CO2) in the atmosphere for the achievement of slowing down climate warming. Photovoltaic (PV) modules have emerged as a promising technology in the realm of sustainable energy solutions, specifically in the harnessing of solar energy. Photovoltaic modules, which use solar energy to generate electricity, are often used on terrestrial platforms. In recent years, there has been an increasing inclination towards the installation of photovoltaic (PV) modules over water surfaces, including lakes, reservoirs, and even oceans. The novel methodology introduces distinct benefits and complexities, specifically pertaining to the thermal characteristics of the modules. In order to accomplish this objective, a photovoltaic (PV) module system with a capacity of 1 MW was developed as a scenario in the PVsyst Program. The scenario simulation was conducted on the Mamasın Dam, situated in the Gökçe village within the Aksaray province. To conduct the efficiency analysis, a comparative evaluation was conducted between bifacial and monofacial modules, which were installed from above the water at 1 m. The comparison was made considering two different types of modules. Additionally, the albedo effect, water saving amount, and CO2 emissions of the system were also investigated. Albedo measurements were made in summer when the PV power plant will operate most efficiently. As a result of the simulations, it was found that bifacial modules produce 12.4% more energy annually than monofacial modules due to the albedo effect. It is estimated that PV power plant installation will save 19,562.695 and 17,253.475 tons of CO2 emissions in bifacial and monofacial systems, respectively. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The assessment of solar resources involves the utilization of physical or satellite models for the determination of solar radiation on the Earth's surface. However, a critical aspect of model validation necessitates comparisons against ground-truth measurements obtained from surface radiometers. Given the inherent challenges associated with establishing and maintaining solar radiation measurement networks—characterized by their expense, logistical complexities, limited station availability and the imperative consideration of climatic criteria for siting—countries endowed with substantial climatic diversity face difficulties in station placement. In this investigation, the measurements of annual solar irradiation, from meteorological stations of the National Weather Service in Mexico, were compared in different regions clustered by similarities in altitude, TL Linke, albedo and cloudiness index derived from satellite images; the main objective is to find the best ratio of annual solar irradiation in a set of clusters. Employing machine learning algorithms, this research endeavors to identify the most suitable model for predicting the ratio of annual solar irradiation and to determine the optimal number of clusters. The findings underscore the efficacy of the L-method as a robust technique for regionalization. Notably, the cloudiness index emerges as a pivotal feature, with the Random Forest algorithm yielding superior performance with a R2 score of 0.94, clustering Mexico into 17 regions. Radiative transfer is a nonlinear process. Despite this, most current methods to evaluate radiative feedback, such as the kernel method, rely on linear assumptions. Neural network (NN) models can emulate nonlinear radiative transfer due to their structure and activation functions. This study aims to test whether NNs can be used to evaluate shortwave radiative feedbacks and to assess their performance. This study focuses on the shortwave radiative feedback driven by surface albedo. An NN model is first trained using idealized cases, simulating truth values from a radiative transfer model via the partial radiative perturbation method. Two heuristic cases are analyzed: univariate feedback, perturbing the albedo; and bivariate feedback, perturbing the albedo and cloud cover concurrently. These test the NN's ability to capture nonlinearity in the albedo–flux and albedo–cloud–flux relationships. We identify the minimal NN structure and predictor variables for accurate predictions. Then, an NN model is trained with realistic radiation flux and atmospheric variable data and is tested with respect to its predictions at different order levels: zero-order for the flux itself, first-order for radiative sensitivity (kernels), and second-order for kernel differences. This paper documents the test results and explains the NN's ability to reproduce the complex nonlinear relationship between radiation flux and different atmospheric variables, such as surface albedo, cloud optical depth, and their coupling effects. The radiative budget is one of the key factors that influences climate change. The aim of this study was to analyze the radiative regime in Moscow using the RAD-MSU(BSRN) complex and to estimate the radiative effects of the main geophysical factors during the 2021–2023 period. This complex is equipped and maintained according to the recommendations of the Baseline Surface Radiation Network; however, it is not a part of this network. In cloudless conditions, the decrease in global shortwave irradiance (Q) is about 18–22% due to the aerosol content with a pronounced change in the direct to diffuse ratio. In winter, the increase in Q is about 45 W/m2 (or 9%) at h = 30° due to a high surface albedo and reduced aerosol and water vapor contents, while the net shortwave irradiance (Bsh) demonstrates a significant decrease due to the prevailing effects of snow albedo. In cloudy conditions, a nonlinear dependence of Q and Bsh cloud transmittance on the relative sunshine duration is observed. The mean changes in Q for the 2021–2023 against the 1955–2020 period are characterized by negative anomalies (−22%) in winter and positive anomalies in summer (+3%) due to the changes in cloudiness. Solar geoengineering (SG) solutions have many advantages compared to the difficulty of carbon dioxide removal (CDR): SG produces fast results, is shown here to have much higher efficiency than CDR, is not related to fossil fuel legislation, reduces the GHG effect including water vapor, and is something we all can participate in by brightening the Earth with cool roofs and roads. SG requirements detailed previously to mitigate global warming (GW) have been concerning primarily because of overwhelming goals and climate circulation issues. In this paper, annual solar geoengineering (ASG) equations and estimated requirements for yearly solar radiation modification (SRM) of areas are provided along with the advantages of annual solar geoengineering (ASG) to mitigate yearly global warming temperature increases. The ASG albedo area modification requirements found here are generally 50 to potentially more than 150 times less compared to the challenge of full SG GW albedo mitigation, reducing circulation concerns and increasing feasibility. These reductions are applied to L1 space sunshading, Earth brightening, and stratosphere aerosol injection (SAI) SRM annual area requirements. However, SAI coverage compared to other methods will have higher yearly increasing maintenance costs in the annual approach. Results also show that because ASG Earth albedo brightening area requirements are much smaller than those needed for full mitigation, there are concerns that worldwide negative SG would interfere with making positive advances for several reasons. 'Albedo bluing' of fruits occurs in many varieties of citrus, resulting in a significant reduction in their commercial value. We first presented a breakthrough method for successfully extracting and purifying the 'albedo bluing' substance (ABS) from citrus fruits, resulting in the attainment of highly purified ABS. Then, HPLC and UPLC-QTOF-MS were used to prove that ABS in the fruits of three citrus varieties (Citrus reticulate Blanco cv. 'Gonggan', 'Orah', and 'Mashuiju') are identical. However, the chemical structure of ABS remains elusive for many reasons. Fortunately, a more stable derivative of ABS (ABS-D) was successfully obtained. Through various analytical techniques such as HRESIMS, 1D and 2D NMR, and chemical shift calculation, ABS-D was identified as 2,4-dihydroxy-6-(β-D-glucopyranosyloxy)phenyl(5,6-dihydroxy-7-(β-D-glucopyranosyloxy)benzo[d]thiazol-2-yl)methanone, indicating that both ABS and its derivative belong to a rare category of benzothiazole glucosides. Furthermore, both ABS and ABS-D demonstrated potent antioxidant abilities. These findings lay the groundwork for further elucidating the chemical structure of ABS and the causative mechanism of the 'albedo bluing' phenomenon in citrus fruits. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Fengyun-4B (FY-4B) is the latest Chinese next-generation geostationary meteorological satellite. The Advanced Geostationary Radiation Imager (AGRI) aboard FY-4B is equipped with 15 spectral bands, from visible to infrared, suitable for aerosol optical depth (AOD) retrieval. In this study, an overland AOD retrieval algorithm was developed for the FY-4B AGRI. Considering the large directional variation in the FY-4B AGRI reflectances, a bidirectional reflectance distribution function (BRDF) database was built, through which to estimate land surface reflectance/albedo. Seasonal aerosol models, based on four geographical regions in China, were developed between 2016 and 2022 using AERONET aerosol products, to improve their applicability to regional distribution differences and seasonal variations in aerosol types. AGRI AODs were retrieved using this new method over China from September 2022 to August 2023 and validated against ground-based measurements. The AGRI, Advanced Himawari Imager (AHI), and Moderate-Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) official land aerosol products were also evaluated for comparison purposes. The results showed that the AGRI AOD retrievals were highly consistent with the AERONET AOD measurements, with a correlation coefficient (R) of 0.88, root mean square error (RMSE) of 0.14, and proportion that met an expected error (EE) of 65.04%. Intercomparisons between the AGRI AOD and other operational AOD products showed that the AGRI AOD retrievals achieved better performance results than the AGRI, AHI, and MODIS official AOD products. Moreover, the AGRI AOD retrievals showed high spatial integrity and stable performance at different times and regions, as well as under different aerosol loadings and characteristics. These results demonstrate the robustness of the new aerosol retrieval method and the potential of FY-4B AGRI measurements for the monitoring of aerosols with high accuracy and temporal resolutions. Precise mapping and continuous monitoring of fine-scale surface albedo are indispensable for assessing and optimizing renewable energy sources. Understanding the variations in surface reflectivity is crucial in capturing the full potential of renewable technologies, as it directly impacts the efficiency of harnessing solar energy for sustainable power generation. Satellite remote sensing stands out as the sole practical approach for estimating surface albedo at both regional and global scales. Although there are different methods to calculate albedo from satellite data, most satellite products result in low spatial resolution for large heterogeneous areas, such as urban and peri-urban areas. This paper evaluates and compares several methodologies to calculate surface albedo from Landsat 8 imagery. As a result, a new methodology for estimating surface albedo for heterogeneous areas has been proposed. The new methodology has been compared with direct and indirect albedo measurements, improving the original methodologies of Baldinelli and Silva with respect to the Arctic-Boreal Vulnerability Experiment (ABOVE) albedo images by reducing the RMSE by 85% and 52%, respectively. Efficient water resource management in glacier- and snow-dominated basins requires accurate estimates of the snow water equivalent (SWE) in late winter and spring and melt onset timing and intensity. To understand the high spatio-temporal variability of snow and glacier ablation, a spatially distributed energy balance model combining satellite-based retrievals of albedo and snow cover was applied. Incoming short-wave energy, contributing to daily estimates of melt energy, was constrained by remotely sensed surface albedo for snow-covered surfaces. Fractional snow cover was used for non-glaciated areas, as it provides estimates of snow cover for each pixel to better constrain snow melt. Thus, available daily estimates of melt energy in a given area were the product of the possible melt energy and the fractional snow cover of the area or pixel for non-glaciated areas. This provided daily estimates of melt water to determine seasonal snow and glacier ablation in Iceland for the period 2000–2019. Observations from snow pits on land and glacier summer mass balance were used for evaluation, and observations from land and glacier-based automatic weather stations were used to evaluate model inputs for the energy balance model. The results show that the interannual SWE variability was generally high both for seasonal snow and glaciers. For seasonal snow, the largest SWE (>1000 mm) was found in mountainous and alpine areas close to the coast, notably in the East- and Westfjords, Tröllaskaga, and in the vicinity of glacier margins. Lower SWE values were observed in the central highlands, flatter inland areas, and at lower elevations. For glaciers, more SWE (glacier ablation) was associated with lower glacier elevations while less melt was observed at higher elevations. This study analyzed the seasonality of biophysical parameters in the extreme years of precipitation and the relationship with the monthly precipitation of the state of Pernambuco at the regional level (Pernambuco) and homogeneous precipitation zones: zone 1—semiarid, zone 2—transition and zone 3—coastal. For this, the biophysical parameters at the monthly level in the extreme years, 2004 (wet) and 2012 (dry) were related to precipitation data of 45 rainfall stations. Using the Google Earth Engine platform, we calculate the biophysical parameters with MODIS products: Albedo, Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), Enhanced Vegetation Index (EVI), Soil Adjusted Vegetation Index (SAVI), Normalized Difference Water Index (NDWI) and surface temperature (ST). Considering the most critical period, between September and December, of a wet year (2004) with a dry year (2012), there is an average reduction of 14% of vegetation indices (NDVI, EVI and SAVI), a 60% reduction in NDWI, an increase of 4% in albedo and 3% in surface temperature. For monitoring the water conditions of the state of Pernambuco, the most appropriate biophysical parameter is the NDWI index and surface temperature. This work investigates the influence of ground albedo on the solar radiation obtained by surfaces mounted on fixed-tilt-to-south, one-axis, and two-axis systems. To do this, estimation of the solar radiation difference is performed by applying real albedo and zero albedo. This is achieved within Saudi Arabia at 82 selected sites. Annual, seasonal, and monthly mean solar energy differences are computed as a function of the site's number, latitude, and local near-real ground albedo. The great variation in the ground-albedo values at the 82 sites (0.1–0.46) could be thought of as having a significant effect on the solar radiation levels received on the three tracking modes. This analysis shows quite the opposite; zero-albedo ground diminishes solar radiation levels by 1.43%, 3.50%, and 3.20%, respectively, for the three modes. Therefore, in most solar engineering applications, a ground albedo of 0.2 (considered a reference) can be used without losing accuracy. This is the main conclusion of the study, which must, however, be applied with caution in areas with snow cover, especially for mode-III tracking systems. Accurate thermal infrared (TIR) fast-forward models are critical for weather forecasting via numerical weather prediction (NWP) satellite radiance assimilation and operational environmental data record (EDR) retrieval algorithms. The thermodynamic and compositional data about the surface and lower troposphere are derived from semi-transparent TIR window bands (i.e., surface-sensitive channels) that can span into the far-infrared (FIR) region under dry polar conditions. To model the satellite observed radiance within these bands, an accurate a priori emissivity is necessary for the surface in question, usually provided in the form of a physical or empirical model. To address the needs of hyperspectral TIR satellite radiance assimilation, this paper discusses the research, development, and preliminary validation of a physically based snow/ice emissivity model designed for practical implementation within operational fast-forward models such as the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Community Radiative Transfer Model (CRTM). To accommodate the range of snow grain sizes, a hybrid modeling approach is adopted, combining a layer scattering model based on the Mie theory (viz., the Wiscombe–Warren 1980 snow albedo model, its complete derivation provided in the Appendices) with a specular facet model. The Mie-scattering model is valid for the smallest snow grain sizes typical of fresh snow and frost, whereas the specular facet model is better suited for the larger sizes and welded snow surfaces typical of aged snow. Comparisons of the model against the previously published spectral emissivity measurements show reasonable agreement across zenith observing angles and snow grain sizes, and preliminary observing system experiments (OSEs) have revealed notable improvements in snow/ice surface window channel calculations versus hyperspectral TIR satellite observations within the NOAA NWP radiance assimilation system. The urban heat island effect poses a growing threat to human society, especially in densely populated and developed megacities. With the introduction of the Local Climate Zones (LCZ) framework, new perspectives and findings have been brought to urban heat island studies. This study investigated the cooling effect of vegetation and albedo on the surface urban heat island (SUHI) in the classification system of LCZ during different seasons, using three Chinese megacities as case study areas. Single-factor linear regression and Pearson's correlation coefficient were applied to analyze the seasonal cooling effect of both albedo and the NDVI on the SUHI within different LCZs. The results show that (1) the variability of the SUHI is reflected in its dominance and intensity within certain LCZs in different cities and in the efficiency of cooling factors; (2) the cooling effect of vegetation is dominant in each season, and the cooling effect produced by albedo within specific seasons can be differentiated by LCZs.
