So far, there have been no high-quality studies examining the efficacy of outpatient biofeedback devices in cases of prescribed partial weight-bearing, such as after surgery on the lower limbs. This study aimed to assess whether a biofeedback device is more effective than using a personal scale. Two groups of healthy individuals wearing an insole orthosis were trained to achieve partial loading in a three-point gait within a target zone of 15–30 kg during overground walking and going up and down stairs. The treatment group (20 women and 22 men) received continuous biofeedback, while the control group (26 women and 16 men) received no information. Findings were compared in a randomized controlled trial. Compliance with partial loading without biofeedback was poor; on level ground and stairs, only one in two steps fell within the target area, and overloading occurred on at least one in three steps. The treatment group reduced the percentage of steps taken in the overload zone to ≤8.4% (p < 0.001 across all three courses) and achieved more than two-thirds of their steps within the target zone (p < 0.001 on level ground, p = 0.008 upstairs, and p = 0.028 downstairs). In contrast, the control group did not demonstrate any significant differences in the target zone (p = 0.571 on level ground, p = 0.332 upstairs, and p = 0.392 downstairs). With the development of science and technology, wearable electronics are increasingly widely used in medical, environmental monitoring, and other fields. Thus, the demand for flexible electrodes is increasing. The two-dimensional material Ti3C2Tx has attracted much attention in the manufacture of flexible electrodes due to its excellent mechanical and electrical properties. However, the brittleness of pure Ti3C2Tx films has become a major obstacle for their use as flexible electrodes in wearable devices. Therefore, solving the brittleness problem of flexible electrodes based on Ti3C2Tx while maintaining the excellent performance of Ti3C2Tx has become an urgent problem. To solve this problem, Ti3C2Tx was compounded with waterborne polyurethane (WPU), and a Ti3C2Tx-WPU composite film with a hierarchical structure was constructed by evaporation-assisted self-assembly. The Ti3C2Tx-WPU composite film not only retains the excellent electrical conductivity of Ti3C2Tx (100 S m−1) but also has flexibility (20 MJ m−3). Furthermore, the Ti3C2Tx-WPU composite film is applied to functional devices such as contact pressure sensors and non-contact proximity sensors. An automated device is designed to measure the density of a liquid material using hydrostatic pressure method. A low cost pressure sensor is calibrated and used to get highly accurate readings. The calibration is done by measuring the pressure values vs. the generated voltage signal. The calibration has been challenging due to the low accuracy of the sensor but proved to be highly effective in applications. The interface is developed using a microcontroller, motor drives, analog to digital converters and sensors. The device is designed to get several readings automatically by changing the positions of the device/liquid column heights to increase the accuracy. Also the device can be programmed to measure the real time density of a liquid continuously. The readings were analyzed and averaged by a software developed in python language. The instruments accuracy was tested against 3 liquid types, water, coconut oil, kerosene oil, and showed a low error (0.007%, 0.001%, and 0.002% respectively) compared to the readings of a standard Pycnometer. Colonoscopy has a limited field of view because it relies solely on a small camera attached to the end of the scope and a screen displayed on a monitor. Consequently, the quality and safety of diagnosis and treatment depend on the experience and skills of the gastroenterologist. When a novice attempts to insert the colonoscope during the procedure, excessive pressure can sometimes be applied to the colon wall. This pressure can cause a medical accident known as colonic perforation, which the physician should prevent. We propose an assisting device that senses the pressure applied to the colon wall, analyzes the risk of perforation, and warns the physician in real time. Flexible pressure sensors are attached to the surface of the colonoscope shaft. These sensors measure pressure signals during a colonoscopy procedure. A simple signal processor is used to collect and process the pressure signals. In the experiment, a colonoscope equipped with the proposed device was inserted into a simulated colon made from a colon extracted from a pig. The processed data were visually communicated to the gastroenterologist via displays and light-emitting diodes (LEDs). The device helps the physician continuously monitor and prevent excessive pressure on the colon wall. In this experiment, the device appropriately generated and delivered warnings to help the physicians prevent colonic perforation. The high cost and limited availability of home spirometers pose a significant barrier to effective respiratory disease management and monitoring. To address this challenge, this paper introduces a novel Venturi-based spirometer designed for home use, leveraging the Bernoulli principle. The device features a 3D-printed Venturi tube that narrows to create a pressure differential, which is measured by a differential pressure sensor and converted into airflow rate. The airflow is then integrated over time to calculate parameters such as the Forced Vital Capacity (FVC) and Forced Expiratory Volume in one second (FEV1). The system also includes a bacterial filter for hygienic use and a circuit board for data acquisition and streaming. Evaluation with eight healthy individuals demonstrated excellent test-retest reliability, with intraclass correlation coefficients (ICCs) of 0.955 for FVC and 0.853 for FEV1. Furthermore, when compared to standard Pulmonary Function Test (PFT) equipment, the spirometer exhibited strong correlation, with Pearson correlation coefficients of 0.992 for FVC and 0.968 for FEV1, and high reliability, with ICCs of 0.987 for FVC and 0.907 for FEV1. These findings suggest that the Venturi-based spirometer could significantly enhance access to spirometry at home. The present work demonstrates the manufacturing process of a pneumatic bellow actuator with an embedded sensor, utilizing a novel manufacturing approach through the complete use of additive manufacturing techniques, such as direct ink writing (DIW) and traditional fused deposition modeling (FDM) methods. This study is innovative in its integration of a dielectric electroactive polymer (DEAP) structure with sensing electrodes made of conductive carbon grease (CCG), showcasing a unique application of a 3D-printed DEAP with CCG electrodes for combined DEAP sensing and pneumatic actuation. Initial experiments, supported by computational simulations, evaluated the distinct functionality of the DEAP sensor by itself under various pressure conditions. The findings revealed a significant change in capacitance with applied pressure, validating the sensor's performance. After sensor validation, an additive manufacturing process for embedding the DEAP structure into a soft pneumatic actuator was created, exhibiting the system's capability for dual sensing and actuation, as the embedded sensor effectively responded to applied actuation pressure. This dual functionality represents an advancement in soft actuators, especially in applications that require integrated and responsive actuation and sensing capabilities. Pressure sensors prepared from sapphire exhibit excellent characteristics, including high-temperature resistance, high hardness, and resistance to electromagnetic interference. A Fast Fourier Transform and Mean Square Error (FFT-MSE) demodulation algorithm was employed to demodulate a sapphire sandwich-structure Fabry–Perot (F-P) pressure sensor. Through simulation analysis, the experimental results indicated that the demodulation error of the air cavity length in the range of 206 μm to 216 μm was less than 0.0008%. Compared to single demodulation methods and combined demodulation methods based on FFT or Minimum Mean Square Error (MMSE), the method proposed in this work reduced the demodulation error by more than three times and increased accuracy by more than six times. The algorithm was utilized to demodulate the sapphire sandwich-structure F-P pressure sensor, and the test results indicated that the fitting error of the sensor was less than 0.025% within the pressure range of 0 MPa to 10 MPa. The repeatability error was less than 0.066%, the zero-point deviation was 1.26%, and the maximum stability deviation was 0.0063% per 30 min. The algorithm effectively demodulated the actual cavity length variation in the sapphire sandwich-structure F-P pressure sensor, providing a solution for the performance evaluation of the sapphire sandwich-structure F-P pressure sensor. The purpose of the research discussed in this article is to explore the possibility of creating hybrid soft ballistic panel (BP) package variants by integrating into their composition layers of graphene-modified para-aramid fabrics in combinations with the different ballistic Kevlar textiles to improve the durability of the first layers of the soft ballistic panel. To address this goal, the liquid-phase exfoliation (LPE) method was used for integrating dispersions into composites to solve a number of topical problems in the stages of the technological sequence development of processing methods and optimizing processing parameters in accordance with the processing specifics of aramid textiles to achieve the desired properties of modified ballistic fabric, including the provision of coating adhesion to the surface to be modified. To test the results, ballistic experiments were performed and the back-face signature (BFS) of bullet impact on a backing material was analysed according to standards. Microstructures have been proved as crucial factors for the sensing performance of flexible pressure sensors. In this study, polypyrrole (PPy)/sunflower pollen (SFP) (P/SFP) was prepared via the in situ growth of PPy on the surface of degreased SFP with a sea urchin-like microstructure; then, these P/SFP microspheres were sprayed onto a flat silk cocoon (FSC) to prepare a sensing layer P/SFP-FSC. PPy-FSC (P-FSC) was prepared as an electrode layer through the in situ polymerization of PPy on the FSC surface. The sensing layer P/SFP-FSC was placed between two P-FSC electrode layers to assemble a P/SFP-FSC pressure sensor together with a fork finger electrode. With 6 mg/cm2 of optimized sprayed P/SFP microspheres, the prepared flexible pressure sensor has a sensitivity of up to 0.128 KPa−1 in the range of 0–13.18 KPa and up to 0.13 KPa−1 in the range of 13.18–30.65 KPa, a fast response/recovery time (90 ms/80 ms), and a minimum detection limit as low as 40 Pa. This fabricated flexible P/SFP-FSC sensor can monitor human motion and can also be used for the encrypted transmission of important information via Morse code. In conclusion, the developed flexible P/SFP-FSC pressure sensor based on microstructure modification in this study shows good application prospects in the field of human–computer interaction and wearable electronic devices. With the development of technology, people's demand for pressure sensors with high sensitivity and a wide working range is increasing. An effective way to achieve this goal is simulating human skin. Herein, we propose a facile, low-cost, and reproducible method for preparing a skin-like multi-layer flexible pressure sensor (MFPS) device with high sensitivity (5.51 kPa−1 from 0 to 30 kPa) and wide working pressure range (0–200 kPa) by assembling carbonized fabrics and micro-wrinkle-structured Ag@rGO electrodes layer by layer. In addition, the highly imitated skin structure also provides the device with an extremely short response time (60/90 ms) and stable durability (over 3000 cycles). Importantly, we integrated multiple sensor devices into gloves to monitor finger movements and behaviors. Smart wearable devices are extensively utilized across diverse domains due to their inherent advantages of flexibility, portability, and real-time monitoring. Among these, flexible sensors demonstrate exceptional pliability and malleability, making them a prominent focus in wearable electronics research. However, the implementation of flexible wearable sensors often entails intricate and time-consuming processes, leading to high costs, which hinder the advancement of the entire field. Here, we report a pressure and proximity sensor based on oxidized laser-induced graphene (oxidized LIG) as a dielectric layer sandwiched by patterned LIG electrodes, which is characterized by high speed and cost-effectiveness. It is found that in the low-frequency range of fewer than 0.1 kHz, the relative dielectric constant of the oxidized LIG layer reaches an order of magnitude of 10 4 . The pressure mode of this bimodal capacitive sensor is capable of detecting pressures within the range of 1.34 Pa to 800 Pa, with a response time of several hundred milliseconds. The proximity mode involves the application of stimulation using an acrylic probe, which demonstrates a detection range from 0.05 mm to 37.8 mm. Additionally, it has a rapid response time of approximately 100 ms, ensuring consistent signal variations throughout both the approach and withdrawal phases. The sensor fabrication method proposed in this project effectively minimizes expenses and accelerates the preparation cycle through precise control of laser processing parameters to shape the electrode-dielectric layer-electrode within a single substrate material. Many studies on flexible strain and pressure sensors have been reported due to growing interest in wearable devices for healthcare purposes. Here, we present flexible pressure and strain (motion) sensors prepared with only graphene oxide (GO) and commercial silk fabrics and yarns. The pressure sensors were fabricated by simply dipping the silk fabric into GO solution followed by applying a thermal treatment at 400 °C to obtain reduced GO (rGO). The pressure sensors were made from rGO-coated fabrics, which were stacked in three, five, and seven layers. A super-sensitivity of 2.58 × 103 kPa−1 at low pressure was observed in the seven-layer pressure sensor. The strain sensors were obtained from rGO-coated twisted silk yarns whose gauge factor was 0.307. Although this value is small or comparable to the values for other sensors, it is appropriate for motion sensing. In recent years, flexible pressure sensors have received considerable attention for their potential applications in health monitoring and human–machine interfaces. However, the development of flexible pressure sensors with excellent sensitivity performance and a variety of advantageous characteristics remains a significant challenge. In this paper, a high-performance flexible piezoresistive pressure sensor, BC/ZnO, is developed with a sensitive element consisting of bacterial cellulose (BC) nanofibrous aerogel modified by ZnO nanorods. The BC/ZnO pressure sensor exhibits excellent mechanical and hydrophobic properties, as well as a high sensitivity of −15.93 kPa−1 and a wide range of detection pressure (0.3–20 kPa), fast response (300 ms), and good cyclic durability (>1000). Furthermore, the sensor exhibits excellent sensing performance in real-time monitoring of a wide range of human behaviors, including mass movements and subtle physiological signals. Multifunctional wearable electronic sensors exhibit significant potential for applications in health management, motion tracking, intelligent healthcare, etc. In this study, we developed a novel assembly method for a polymeric silver nanowire (Ag NW)/transition metal carbide/nitride (MXene) @Loofah device using a facile solution dip-coating technique. During the pretreatment phase, the loofah was conditioned with polydiallyldimethylammonium chloride (PDAC), promoting the self-assembly of MXene layers and bolstering device stability. Then, the Ag NWs/MXene@Loofah was packaged with polyurethane to form a piezoresistive pressure sensor, which demonstrated superior pressure-sensing capabilities and was adept at registering movements of human joints and even subtle pulses. Electroosmotic experiments obtain the electroosmotic pressure coefficient of a rock sample by measuring the excitation voltage at both ends of the sample and the pressure difference caused by the excitation voltage. The electroosmotic pressure is very weak and buried in the background noise, which is the most difficult signal to measure in the dynamic-electric coupling experiment, so it is necessary to improve its signal-to-noise ratio. In this paper, for the low signal-to-noise ratio of electroosmotic pressure, the dual pressure sensor method is proposed, i.e., two pressure sensors of the same type are used to measure electroosmotic pressure. Two different data extraction methods, Fast Fourier Transform and Locked Amplification, are utilized to compare the dual pressure sensor method of this paper with the existing single pressure sensor method. Effects of varying Mn and Ni concentrations on the structure and piezoresistive properties of CuMnNi films deposited by magnetron sputtering with a segmented target were investigated. An increase in the Ni content refines the CuNi film grains, inducing an increase in defects such as internal micropores and a decrease in film density. At the same time, the positive piezoresistive coefficient of the film changes to negative. When 17.5 at.% Ni was added, the negative piezoresistive coefficient of the CuNi film was −2.0 × 10−4 GPa−1. The doping of Ni has a weakening effect on the positive piezoresistive effect of the film. Adding Mn into Cu refines the film grains while increasing the film density. The surface roughness of the film decreases with the increase in Mn content. When the Mn content was 16.7 at.%, the piezoresistive coefficient reached the largest recorded value of 23.81 × 10−4 GPa−1, and the film exhibited excellent repeatability in multiple piezoresistive tests. After the CuMn film with 16.7 at.% Mn was annealed at 400 °C for 2 h, the film grains grew slightly and the film residual stress decreased. The optimization of the film structure can reduce the scattering of electrons during transportation. The piezoresistive coefficient of the film was further improved to 35.78 × 10−4 GPa−1. The sensor response of pressure-sensitive conductive elastomers using polymeric materials can be adjusted by altering the type and quantity of fillers used during manufacturing. Another method involves modifying the surface shape of the elastomer. This study investigates the sensor response by altering the surface shape of an electrode using a readily available pressure-sensitive conductive elastomer. By employing an oxygen-free copper electrode with a flat surface (with surface roughness parameters Ra = 0.064 μm and Rz = 0.564 μm) as a baseline, we examined the sensor system's characteristics. Electrodes were fabricated with triangular wave concavo-convex surfaces, featuring tip angles of 60, 90, and 120°. Improved sensor responses were observed with electrodes having tip angles of 60 and 90°. Additionally, even with varying conductive properties of elastomers, the conductance of the elastomer sensor increased similarly when using an electrode with a 90° tip angle. This study demonstrates the potential for expanding the applications of conductive elastomer sensors, highlighting the noteworthy improvement in sensor response and performance achieved by altering the surface shape of electrodes used with commercially available conductive elastomers. Falls among the elderly are a significant public health issue, resulting in about 684,000 deaths annually. Such incidents often lead to severe consequences including fractures, contusions, and cranial injuries, immensely affecting the quality of life and independence of the elderly. Existing fall detection methods using cameras and wearable sensors face challenges such as privacy concerns, blind spots in vision and being troublesome to wear. In this paper, we propose PIFall, a Pressure Insole-Based Fall Detection System for the Elderly, utilizing the ResNet3D algorithm. Initially, we design and fabricate a pair of insoles equipped with low-cost resistive films to measure plantar pressure, arranging 5 × 9 pressure sensors on each insole. Furthermore, we present a fall detection method that combines ResNet(2+1)D with an insole-based sensor matrix, utilizing time-series 'stress videos' derived from pressure map data as input. Lastly, we collect data on 12 different actions from five subjects, including fall risk activities specifically designed to be easily confused with actual falls. The system achieves an overall accuracy of 91% in detecting falls and 94% in identifying specific fall actions. Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) has emerged as a promising candidate for the dielectric layer in implantable sensors due to its exceptional biocompatibility, stability, and flexibility. This study introduces an innovative approach to produce graphene-reinforced PDMS (Gr-PDMS), where graphite powders are exfoliated into mono- and few-layer graphene sheets within the polymer solution, concurrently forming cross-linkages with PDMS. This method yields a uniformly distributed graphene within the polymer matrix with improved interfaces between graphene and PDMS, significantly reducing the percolation threshold of graphene dispersed in PDMS from 10% to 5%. As-synthesized Gr-PDMS exhibits improved mechanical and electrical properties, tested for potential use in capacitive pressure sensors. The results demonstrate an impressive pressure sensitivity up to 0.0273 kpa−1, 45 times higher than that of pristine PDMS and 2.5 times higher than the reported literature value. In order to realize the measurement of three-axis acceleration, pressure, and magnetic field, monolithic integrated three-axis acceleration/pressure/magnetic field sensors are proposed in this paper. The proposed sensors were constructed with an acceleration sensor consisting of four L-shaped double beams, two masses, middle double-beams, and twelve piezoresistors, a pressure sensor made of a square silicon membrane, and four piezoresistors, as well as a magnetic field sensor composed of five Hall elements. COMSOL software and TCAD-Atlas software were used to simulate characteristics of integrated sensors, and analyze the working principles of the sensors in measuring acceleration, pressure, and magnetic field. The integrated sensors were fabricated by using micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS) technology and packaged by using inner lead bonding technology. When applying a working voltage of 5 V at room temperature, it is possible for the proposed sensors to achieve the acceleration sensitivities of 3.58 mV/g, 2.68 mV/g, and 9.45 mV/g along the x-axis, y-axis, and z-axis (through an amplifying circuit), and the sensitivities towards pressure and magnetic field are 0.28 mV/kPa and 22.44 mV/T, respectively. Pressure sensing plays an important role in many industrial fields; conventional electronic pressure sensors struggle to survive in the harsh environment. Recently microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) fiber-optic Fabry–Perot (FP) pressure sensors have attracted great interest. Here we review the basic principles of MEMS fiber-optic FP pressure sensors and then discuss the sensors based on different materials and their industrial applications. We also introduce recent progress, such as two-photon polymerization-based 3D printing technology, and the state-of-the-art in this field, e.g., sapphire-based sensors that work up to 1200 °C. Flexible paper-based force sensors have garnered significant attention for their important potential applications in healthcare wearables, portable electronics, etc. However, most studies have only used paper as the flexible substrate for sensors, not fully exploiting the potential of paper's micro-nanostructure for sensing. This article proposes a novel approach where paper serves both as the sensitive element and the flexible substrate of force sensors. Under external mechanical forces, the micro-nanostructure of the conductive-treated paper will change, leading to significant changes in the related electrical output and thus enabling sensing. To demonstrate the feasibility and universality of this new method, the article takes paper-based capacitive pressure sensors and paper-based resistive strain sensors as examples, detailing their fabrication processes, constructing sensing principle models based on the micro-nanostructure of paper materials, and testing their main sensing performance. For the capacitive paper-based pressure sensor, it achieves a high sensitivity of 1.623 kPa−1, a fast response time of 240 ms, and a minimum pressure resolution of 4.1 Pa. As for the resistive paper-based strain sensor, it achieves a high sensitivity of 72 and a fast response time of 300 ms. The proposed new method offers advantages such as high sensitivity, simplicity in the fabrication process, environmental friendliness, and cost-effectiveness, providing new insights into the research of flexible force sensors. The design, especially the numerical calibration, of a circular touch mode capacitive pressure sensor is highly dependent on the accuracy of the analytical solution of the contact problem between the circular conductive membrane and the rigid plate of the sensor. In this paper, the plate/membrane contact problem is reformulated using a more accurate in-plane equilibrium equation, and a new and more accurate analytical solution is presented. On this basis, the design and numerical calibration theory for circular touch mode capacitive pressure sensors has been greatly improved and perfected. The analytical relationships of pressure and capacitance are numerically calculated using the new and previous analytical solutions, and the gradually increasing difference between the two numerical calculation results with the gradual increase in the applied pressure is graphically shown. How to use analytical solutions and analytical relationships to design and numerically calibrate a circular touch mode capacitive pressure sensor with a specified pressure detecting range is illustrated in detail. The effect of changing design parameters on capacitance–pressure analytical relationships is comprehensively investigated; thus, the direction of changing design parameters to meet the required or desired range of pressure or capacitance is clarified. The development of high-performance flexible pressure sensors with porous hierarchical microstructures is limited by the complex and time-consuming preparation processes of porous hierarchical microstructures. In this study, a simple modified heat curing process was first proposed to achieve one-step preparation of porous hemispherical microstructures on a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) substrate. In this process, a laser-prepared template was used to form surface microstructures on PDMS film. Meanwhile, the thermal decomposition of glucose monohydrate additive during heat curing of PDMS led to the formation of porous structures within PDMS film. Further, based on the obtained PDMS/CNTs electrodes with porous hemisphere array and ionic polymer dielectric layers, high-performance ionic piezocapacitive sensors were realized. Under the synergistic effect of the low-stiffness porous hemisphere microstructure and the electric double layer of the ionic polymer film, the sensor based on an ionic polymer film with a 1:0.75 ratio of P(VDF-HFP):[EMIM][TFSI] not only achieves a sensitivity of up to 106.27 kPa−1 below 3 kPa, but also has a wide measurement range of over 400 kPa, which has obvious advantages in existing flexible piezocapacitive sensors. The rapid response time of 110 s and the good stability of 2300 cycles of the sensor further elucidate its practicality. The application of the sensor in pulse monitoring, speech recognition, and detection of multiple dynamic loads verifies its excellent sensing performance. Intelligent transfemoral prostheses, which have recently been studied, are equipped with a microcontroller, providing appropriate motion functions for their walking environments. Thus, studies have been conducted to estimate user intentions in locomotion movements by applying biomechanical sensors inside the socket. Among them, a pressure sensor is used to determine the intentions of locomotion movements through changes in the internal pressure of the prosthetic socket. However, existing studies have a problem in that the reproducibility of pressure change data is degraded due to the non-detection and saturation of the pressure measurement value. Accordingly, this study proposes a fabrication method for a wide and flexible pressure sensor that can solve this problem and a method for the identification of user intentions in locomotion movements using it. The proposed system was fabricated with Velostat film, which has a smaller noise impact and can be fabricated in various sizes and shapes. The fabricated sensor was attached to four points inside the socket, confirming the possibility of detecting the intention of six movements according to the multi-critical detection method. A piezoresistive electrical bagging material with minimal cost and profile, such as linqstat or velostat, is a good choice for pressure-sensing systems in robotic arm grippers. This paper's main objective is to examine the performance of a unique velostat-based pressure sensor system for supplying real-time grasping pressure profiles during the lifting of calibrated weights. Copper conductive tape was used to build the sensor, and it was positioned on top of and beneath a velostat sheet to serve as an electrode. The accuracy, repeatability, and hysteresis responses of the pressure sensor system were examined through a variety of experiments, as well as through testing with calibrated weights ranging from 100 gm to 2000 gm in steps. The sensor's hysteresis and nonlinear characteristics were discovered through the experimental results of loading cycle measurements. Velostat proved to be a realistic option as a sensitive material for sensors with a single electrode pair, depending on the sensor's sensitivity, hysteresis, reaction time, loading conditions, and deformation. This study analyzes the dynamics of surface melting in Antarctica, which are crucial for understanding glacier and ice sheet behavior and monitoring polar climate change. Specifically, we focus on the Nivlisen ice shelf in East Antarctica, examining melt ponds, supra glacial lakes (SGLs), seasonal surface melt extent, and surface ice flow velocity. Spatial and temporal analysis is based on Landsat and Sentinel-1 data from the austral summers of 2000 to 2023. Between 2000 and 2014, melt ponds and SGLs on the ice shelf covered roughly 1 km2. However, from 2015 to 2023, surface melting increased consistently, leading to more extensive melt ponds and SGLs. Significant SGL depths were observed in 2016, 2017, 2019, and 2020, with 2008, 2016, and 2020 showing the highest volumes and progressive SGL area growth. We also examined the relationship between seasonal surface melt extent and ice flow velocity. Validation efforts involved ground truth data from a melt pond in central Dronning Maud Land (cDML) during the 2022–2023 austral summer, along with model-based results. The observed increase in melt pond depth and volume may significantly impact ice shelf stability, potentially accelerating ice flow and ice shelf destabilization. The application of traditional pressure sensors in health monitoring is limited by their initial rigidity. Flexible pressure sensors have thus received extensive attention owing to their excellent device flexibility. In this paper, we demonstrate a method of constructing flexible pressure sensors by inverting porous skeleton nickel foam based on multi-wall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). MWCNTs and PDMS were mixed to form a composite conductive film, and the mass fraction of MWCNTs was optimized by evaluating the resistance change rate of the composite film. The optimized value of the mass fraction was 5%, which was used to prepare the flexible pressure sensors. The response, hysteresis, and stability of the sensors were further characterized. Pulse signals of humans were detected through flexible sensors, which can be used to evaluate cardiovascular conditions of the human body. Ankle joint flexion and extension movements play an important role in the rehabilitation training of patients who have been injured or bedridden for a long time before and after surgery. Accurately guiding patients to perform ankle flexion and extension movements can significantly reduce deep vein thromboembolism. Currently, most ankle rehabilitation devices focus on assisting patients with ankle flexion and extension movements, and there is a lack of devices for effectively monitoring these movements. In this study, we designed an ankle joint flexion and extension movement-monitoring device based on a pressure sensor. It was composed of an STM32 microcontroller, a pressure sensor, an HX711A/D conversion chip, and an ESP8266 WiFi communication module. The value of the force and the effective number of ankle joint flexion and extension movements were obtained. An experimental device was designed to verify the accuracy of the system. The maximum average error was 0.068 N; the maximum average relative error was 1.7%; the maximum mean-squared error was 0.00464 N. The results indicated that the monitoring device had a high accuracy and could effectively monitor the force of ankle flexion and extension movements, ultimately ensuring that the patient could effectively monitor and grasp the active ankle pump movement. Small, low-power, and inexpensive marine depth sensors are of interest for a myriad of applications from maritime security to environmental monitoring. Recently, laser-induced graphene (LIG) piezoresistive pressure sensors have been proposed given their rapid fabrication and large dynamic range. In this work, the practicality of LIG integration into fieldable deep ocean (1 km) depth sensors in bulk is explored. Initially, a design of experiments (DOEs) approach evaluated laser engraver fabrication parameters such as line length, line width, laser speed, and laser power on resultant resistances of LIG traces. Next, uniaxial compression and thermal testing at relevant ocean pressures up to 10.3 MPa and temperatures between 0 and 25 °C evaluated the piezoresistive response of replicate sensors and determined the individual characterization of each, which is necessary. Additionally, bare LIG sensors showed larger resistance changes with temperature (ΔR ≈ 30 kΩ) than pressure (ΔR ≈ 1–15 kΩ), indicating that conformal coatings are required to both thermally insulate and electrically isolate traces from surrounding seawater. Sensors encapsulated with two dip-coated layers of 5 wt% polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) silicone and submerged in water baths from 0 to 25 °C showed significant thermal dampening (ΔR ≈ 0.3 kΩ), indicating a path forward for the continued development of LIG/PDMS composite structures. Force-based human posture estimation (FPE) provides a valuable alternative when camera-based human motion capturing is impractical. It offers new opportunities for sensor integration in smart products for patient monitoring, ergonomic optimization and sports science. Due to the interdisciplinary research on the topic, an overview of existing methods and the required expertise for their utilization is lacking. This paper presents a systematic review by the PRISMA 2020 review process. In total, 82 studies are selected (59 machine learning (ML)-based and 23 digital human model (DHM)-based posture estimation methods). The ML-based methods use input data from hardware sensors—mostly pressure mapping sensors—and trained ML models for estimating human posture. The ML-based human posture estimation algorithms mostly reach an accuracy above 90%. DHMs, which represent the structure and kinematics of the human body, adjust posture to minimize physical stress. The required expert knowledge for the utilization of these methods and their resulting benefits are analyzed and discussed. DHM-based methods have shown their general applicability without the need for application-specific training but require expertise in human physiology. The pressure-sensing mechanisms of conductive elastomers, such as conductive networks, and tunneling effects within them have been extensively studied. However, it has become apparent that external pressure can significantly impact the contact area of polymeric materials. In this study, we will employ a commercially available conductive elastomer to investigate changes in resistance and contact surface under external pressure. Resistance measurements will be taken with and without applying conductive grease to the surface of the elastomer. This allows us to observe changes in resistance values associated with pressure variations. Furthermore, as pressure is applied to the conductive elastomer, the contact area ratio increases. It is essential to detect pressure from a robot's fingertip in every direction to ensure efficient and secure grasping of objects with diverse shapes. Nevertheless, creating a simple-designed sensor that offers cost-effective and omnidirectional pressure sensing poses substantial difficulties. This is because it often requires more intricate mechanical solutions than when designing non-omnidirectional pressure sensors of robot fingertips. This paper introduces an innovative pressure sensor for fingertips. It utilizes a uniquely designed dynamic focusing cone to visually detect pressure with omnidirectional sensitivity. This approach enables cost-effective measurement of pressure from all sides of the fingertip. The experimental findings demonstrate the great potential of the newly introduced sensor. Half-bridge silicon strain gauges are widely used in the fabrication of diaphragm-type high-pressure sensors, but in some applications, they suffer from low output sensitivity because of mounting position constraints. Through a special design and fabrication approach, a new half-bridge silicon strain gauge comprising one arc gauge responding to tangential strain and another linear gauge measuring radial strain was developed using Silicon-on-Glass (SiOG) substrate technology. The tangential gauge consists of grid patterns, such as the reciprocating arc of silicon piezoresistors on a thin glass substrate. When two half-bridges are connected to form a full bridge with arc-shaped gauges that respond to tangential strain, they have the advantage of providing much higher output sensitivity than a conventional half-bridge. Pressure sensors tested under pressure ranging from 0 to 50 bar at five different temperatures indicate a linear output with a typical sensitivity of approximately 16 mV/V/bar, a maximum zero shift of 0.05% FS, and a span shift of 0.03% FS. The higher output level of pressure sensing gauges will provide greater signal strength, thus maintaining a better signal-to-noise ratio than conventional pressure sensors. The offset and span shift curves are quite linear across the operating temperature range, giving the end user the advantage of using very simple algorithms for temperature compensation of offset and span shift. This article proposes an improved dynamic quantum particle swarm optimization (DQPSO) algorithm to optimize a radial basis function (RBF) neural network for temperature compensation of pressure sensors used in tracking and monitoring wild migratory birds. The algorithm incorporates a temperature-pressure fitting model that includes temperature rate of change and gradient reference terms. It also includes a loss function that considers fitting accuracy and complexity, thereby improving the robustness of the sensor for complex temperature variations. The calibration experiments revealed that after implementation, the average absolute error of the pressure sensor output during dynamic temperature changes was reduced from 145.3 Pa to 20.2 Pa. This reduction represents an 86% improvement over the commercial polynomial compensation method, and the DQPSO approach significantly outperformed traditional feedforward network models. Finally, the algorithm was deployed and verified in an embedded environment for low-power, high-precision, real-time pressure compensation during the tracking and monitoring of wild migratory birds. To study and monitor the adverse health consequences of using electronic cigarettes, a user's puff topography, which are quantification parameters of the user's vaping habits, plays a central role. In this work, we introduce a topography sensor to measure the mass of total particulate matter generated in every puff and to estimate the nicotine yield. The sensor is compact and low-cost, and is integrated into the electronic cigarette device to promptly and conveniently monitor the user's daily puff topography. The topography sensor is comprised of a photometric sensor and a pressure sensor. The photometric sensor measures the mass concentration of the aerosol, based on scattering of near-infrared light from airborne particles, while the pressure sensor measures the flow rate. The topography sensor was tested under various conditions including a wide range of atomizer power, puff duration, and inhalation pressure. The sensor's accuracy was validated by comparing the sensor's readings with reference measurements, and the results matched closely with the trends reported by existing studies on electronic cigarettes. An example application for tracking a user's puff topography was also demonstrated. Atmospheric pressure measurements based on microelectromechanical systems (MEMSs) can extend accessibility to altitude information. A differential pressure sensor using a thin cantilever and an air chamber is a promising sensing element for sub-centimeter resolution. However, its vulnerability to wind and the lack of height estimation algorithms for real-time operation are issues that remain to be solved. We propose a sensor "cap" that cancels the wind effect and noise by utilizing the airflow around a sphere. A set of holes on the spherical cap transmits only the atmospheric pressure to the sensor. In addition, we have developed a height estimation method based on a discrete transfer function model. As a result, both dynamic pressure and noise are suppressed, and height is estimated under a 5 m/s wind, reconstructing the trajectory with an estimation error of 2.8 cm. There is a growing demand for flexible pressure sensors in environmental monitoring and human–robot interaction robotics. A flexible and susceptible sensor can discriminate multidirectional pressure, thus effectively detecting signals of small environmental changes and providing solutions for personalized medicine. This paper proposes a multidimensional force detection sensor inspired by a wind chime structure with a three-dimensional force structure to detect and analyze normal and shear forces in real time. The force-sensing structure of the sensor consists of an upper and lower membrane on a polydimethylsiloxane substrate and four surrounding cylinders. A piezoelectric hemisphere is made of BTO/PVDF/PDMS composite material. The sensor columns in the wind chime structure surround the piezoelectric layer in the middle. When pressure is applied externally, the sensor columns are connected to the piezoelectric layer with a light touch. The piezoelectric hemisphere generates a voltage signal. Due to the particular structure of the sensor, it can accurately capture multidimensional forces and identify the direction of the external force by analyzing the position of the sensor and the output voltage amplitude. Accurate diagnosis of Parkinson's disease (PD) is challenging in clinical medicine. To reduce the diagnosis time and decrease the diagnosis difficulty, we constructed a two-stream Three-Dimensional Convolutional Neural Network (3D-CNN) based on pressure sensor data. The algorithm considers the stitched surface of the feet as an "image"; the geometric positions of the pressure sensors are considered as the "pixel coordinates" and combines the time dimension to form 3D data. The 3D-CNN is used to extract the spatio-temporal features of the gait. In addition, a twin network of 3D-CNN with shared parameters is used to extract the spatio-temporal features of the left and right foot respectively to further obtain symmetry information, which not only extracts the spatial information between the multiple sensors but also obtains the symmetry features of the left and right feet at different spatio-temporal locations. The results show that the proposed model is superior to other advanced methods. Orthoses are commonly prescribed to relieve symptoms for musculoskeletal and neurological conditions; however, patients stop wearing orthoses as recommended for many reasons. When considering the effectiveness of orthoses, there needs to be an objective way to monitor whether participants wear the orthosis as instructed, because if this is not followed, the orthoses will not work as intended. This review aimed to identify, summarise, and compare objective methods used to measure compliance with orthoses applied to the extremities. Databases (Scopus, Web of Science, Embase, CINAHL, and MEDLINE) were searched for eligible studies. Twenty-three studies were accepted in the final review, including five studies that employed upper limb orthoses, two that employed hip orthoses, and fifteen that employed lower limb orthoses. To measure compliance objectively, studies utilised temperature sensors, pressure sensors, accelerometers, a step counter, or a combination of sensors. All sensor types have their own advantages and disadvantages and should be chosen based on study-specific parameters. Sensor-derived monitoring provides quantitative, objective data that are beneficial in both clinical and research settings. The ideal solution to monitoring compliance would consist of both objective and user-reported aspects that, in combination, would provide an all-encompassing picture of the orthotic treatment prescribed. The increasing interest in wearable devices for health monitoring, illness prevention, and human motion detection has driven research towards developing novel and cost-effective solutions for highly sensitive flexible sensors. The objective of this work is to develop innovative piezoresistive pressure sensors utilizing two types of 3D porous flexible open-cell foams: Grid and triply periodic minimal surface structures. These foams will be produced through a procedure involving the 3D printing of sacrificial templates, followed by infiltration with various low-viscosity polymers, leaching, and ultimately coating the pores with graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs). Additive manufacturing enables precise control over the shape and dimensions of the structure by manipulating geometric parameters during the design phase. This control extends to the piezoresistive response of the sensors, which is achieved by infiltrating the foams with varying concentrations of a colloidal suspension of GNPs. To examine the morphology of the produced materials, field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) is employed, while mechanical and piezoresistive behavior are investigated through quasi-static uniaxial compression tests. The results obtained indicate that the optimized grid-based structure sensors, manufactured using the commercial polymer Solaris, exhibit the highest sensitivity compared to other tested samples. These sensors demonstrate a maximum sensitivity of 0.088 kPa−1 for pressures below 10 kPa, increasing to 0.24 kPa−1 for pressures of 80 kPa. Furthermore, the developed sensors are successfully applied to measure heartbeats both before and after aerobic activity, showcasing their excellent sensitivity within the typical pressure range exerted by the heartbeat, which typically falls between 10 and 20 kPa. Bedload sediment transport is critical in the natural river environmental and ecological system. It is quite challenging to measure the bedload sediment transport rate in rivers with any degree of accuracy. In this study, the authors developed the Gravel Pressure and Voice Synchronous observation system (GPVS) to estimate the bedload sediment transport rate in rivers. The core of the GPVS includes an underwater high-fidelity audio recorder and pressure sensor. The audio recorder is intended to monitor the low bedload sediment transport rate, whereas the pressure sensor is utilized to detect relatively substantial bedload sediment transport. The GPVS is tested by running flume experiments with natural gravel to evaluate the system's reliability and feasibility. Results reveal that the GPVS has a very high sensitivity for detecting bedload transport. Attempts have been made to introduce microstructures or wrinkles into the elastomer surface to increase the sensitivity of the elastomer. However, the disadvantage of this method is that when a force is applied to the pressure sensor, the contact area with the electrode is changed and the linear response characteristic of the pressure sensor is reduced. The biggest advantage of the capacitive pressure sensor using an elastomer is that it is a characteristic that changes linearly according to the change in pressure, so it is not suitable to introduce microstructures or wrinkles into the elastomer surface. A method of increasing the sensitivity of the capacitive pressure sensor while maintaining the linearity according to the pressure change is proposed. We proposed a bubble-popping PDMS by creating pores inside the elastomer. The sensitivity of the pressure sensor made of the bubble-popping PDMS was approximately 4.6 times better than that of the pressure sensor without pores, and the pressure sensor made of the bubble-popping PDMS showed a high linear response characteristic to the external pressure change. When studying hand kinematics, it is key to differentiate between free motion and manipulation. This differentiation can be achieved using pressure sensors or through visual analysis in the absence of sensors. Certain data gloves, such as the CyberGlove II, allow recording hand kinematics with good accuracy when properly calibrated. Other gloves, such as the Virtual Motion Glove 30 (VMG30), are also equipped with pressure sensors to detect object contact. The aim of this study is to perform a technical validation to evaluate the feasibility of using virtual reality gloves with pressure sensors such as the VMG30 for hand kinematics characterization during product manipulation, testing its accuracy for motion recording when compared with CyberGlove as well as its ability to differentiate between free motion and manipulation using its pressure sensors in comparison to visual analysis. Firstly, both data gloves were calibrated using a specific protocol developed by the research group. Then, the active ranges of motion of 16 hand joints angles were recorded in three participants using both gloves and compared using repeated measures ANOVAs. The detection capability of pressure sensors was compared to visual analysis in two participants while performing six tasks involving product manipulation. The results revealed that kinematic data recordings from the VMG30 were less accurate than those from the CyberGlove. Furthermore, the pressure sensors did not provide additional precision with respect to the visual analysis technique. In fact, several pressure sensors were rarely activated, and the distribution of pressure sensors within the glove was questioned. Current available gloves such as the VMG30 would require design improvements to fit the requirements for kinematics characterization during product manipulation. The pressure sensors should have higher sensitivity, the pressure sensor's location should comprise the palm, glove fit should be improved, and its overall stiffness should be reduced. This paper describes the use of an optical instrument, the Fabry–Perot interferometer, adapted to measure very low pressures. The interferometer consists of two high-reflectance flat mirrors placed one in front of another. In addition, a metallic chamber contains air or a gas. In one of the faces of the chamber, a flexible thin silicone membrane is attached and, over it, one of the mirrors is glued. The other mirror rests in a fixed mechanical mounting. Light crosses both mirrors and, when it leaves them, forms an interference pattern consisting of concentric circular fringes. When the pressure is increased/decreased within the chamber, a displacement of the fringes is observed due to the movement of the glued mirror. In the injection molding process, weld line regions occur when a molten polymer flow front is first separated and then rejoined. The position, length, and angle of weld lines are dependent on the gate location, injection speed, injection pressure, mold temperature, and, especially, the direction and degree of the polymer melt velocity in the mold-filling process. However, the wall surface velocity of the thermoset melt in the mold-filling process is not zero, which is not found for thermoplastic injection molding. The main reason leading to this difference is the slip phenomenon in the filling phase between the thermoset melt and the wall surface, which is directly affected by the filler content. In this study, commercial thermoset phenolic injection molding compounds with different amounts of filler were employed to investigate not only the mechanism of weld line formation and development behind an obstacle in the injection molding process but also the flow disturbance of the thermoset melt in the spiral flow part. In addition, the effect of the wall slip phenomenon on the flow disturbance characterization and the mechanism of weld lines of selected thermoset materials was carefully considered in this research. Furthermore, the generated material data sheet with the optimal developed reactive viscosity and curing kinetics model was imported into a commercial injection molding tool to predict the weld line formation as well as the mold-filling behavior of selected thermoset injection molding compounds, such as the flow length, cavity pressure profile, temperature distribution, and viscosity variation. This study aims to theoretically address the design and analysis of an efficient pressure sensor designed using a polymer-based defective 1D annular photonic crystal (APC). The 1D APC comprises an alternate arrangement of Si and SiO2 in a cylindrical fashion, incorporating a central defect layer. The investigation of the reflectance characteristics of the proposed structure is conducted by separately considering the polystyrene (PS) and the polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) polymer materials as the defect layer. The pressure-sensitive refractive index of the polymers and the constituent materials of the APC play a vital role in envisaging the pressure-sensing application. The cornerstone of this study is represented by the shift analysis regarding the wavelength of the defect mode inside the band gap using different applied pressures, employing the modified transfer matrix method (MTMM). Various geometrical parameters like the defect polymer layer's thickness and the APC period were carefully optimized to achieve an improved sensing performance. The proposed design demonstrated a remarkable pressure sensitivity and FoM of 51.29 nm/GPa and 301.7 GPa−1, respectively, which is considerably high in the current research scenario. It is believed that the proposed structure can be an apt candidate for an innovative high-performance pressure sensor, and could play a key role in photonic integrated circuits. This paper presents an ultra-small absolute pressure sensor with a silicon-micromachined TSV backside interconnection for high-performance, high spatial resolution contact pressure sensing, including flexible-substrate applications. By exploiting silicon-micromachined TSVs that are compatibly fabricated with the pressure sensor, the sensing signals are emitted from the chip backside, thereby eliminating the fragile leads on the front-side. Such a design achieves a flat and fully passivated top surface to protect the sensor from mechanical damage, for reliable direct-contact pressure sensing. A single-crystal silicon beam–island structure is designed to reduce the deflection of the pressure-sensing diaphragm and improve output linearity. Using our group-developed microholes interetch and sealing (MIS) micromachining technique, we fabricated ultra-small piezoresistive pressure sensors with the chip size as small as 0.4 mm × 0.6 mm, in which the polysilicon-micromachined TSVs transfer the signal interconnection from the front-side to the backside of the wafer, and the sensor chips can be densely packaged on the flexible substrate via the TSVs. The ultra-small pressure sensor has high sensitivity of 0.84 mV/kPa under 3.3 V of supply voltage and low nonlinearity of ±0.09% full scale (FS) in the measurement range of 120 kPa. The proposed pressure sensors with backside-interconnection TSVs hold promise for tactile sensing applications, including flexible sensing of wearable wristwatches. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Spatial distribution perception has become an important trend for flexible pressure sensors, which endows wearable health devices, bionic robots, and human–machine interactive interfaces (HMI) with more precise tactile perception capabilities. Flexible pressure sensor arrays can monitor and extract abundant health information to assist in medical detection and diagnosis. Bionic robots and HMI with higher tactile perception abilities will maximize the freedom of human hands. Flexible arrays based on piezoresistive mechanisms have been extensively researched due to the high performance of pressure-sensing properties and simple readout principles. This review summarizes multiple considerations in the design of flexible piezoresistive arrays and recent advances in their development. First, frequently used piezoresistive materials and microstructures are introduced in which various strategies to improve sensor performance are presented. Second, pressure sensor arrays with spatial distribution perception capability are discussed emphatically. Crosstalk is a particular concern for sensor arrays, where mechanical and electrical sources of crosstalk issues and the corresponding solutions are highlighted. Third, several processing methods are also introduced, classified as printing, field-assisted and laser-assisted fabrication. Next, the representative application works of flexible piezoresistive arrays are provided, including human-interactive systems, healthcare devices, and some other scenarios.
