Objectives: Muscles and their tendons present a considerable diversity of morphological variations. The aim of this study was to explore variants of muscles and tendons from compartments of the thigh and to raise awareness about potential problems during ultrasound examination. Materials and Methods: This comprehensive review of the literature was created on the basis of scientific articles sourced from PubMed. The search included all relevant papers related to the topic, ensuring that the most up-to-date studies were incorporated. In order to achieve these results, we created the exclusion criteria and extracted papers that did not meet the requirements of our review. Relevant papers were incorporated, and tracking of citations was fulfilled. The described method allowed for a broad yet detailed understanding, ensuring that the review of the literature covers all key aspects of the presented research. Results: Various aspects of thigh muscle anomalies were already undertaken; however, as this study has shown, current knowledge, while valuable, is insufficient to draw definitive conclusions regarding the prevalence and clinical implications of these muscle variations. A more robust body of ultrasound-based research is essential to accurately characterize these anomalies, establish their frequency, and assess their impact on clinical decision-making, including diagnostic accuracy, surgical planning, and therapeutic interventions. Conclusions: Numerous anatomical variations of the thigh muscles and tendons that were described in literature over the years might have clinical implications and could lead to mistakes during diagnosis by ultrasound imaging. Background: To determine if there is an association between semimembranosus tendinosis and medial meniscal tears using MRI. Methods: A retrospective review of knee 3T MRI scans was performed to determine the presence or absence of medial meniscal tears in patients with semimembranosus tendinosis. All studies were interpreted by two musculoskeletal radiologists. Univariate association for the presence of semimembranosus tendinosis and medial meniscal tears was performed with a Chi-square test followed by logistic regression modelling among statistically significant associations. Results: A total of 150 knee MRI scans were reviewed (age 32.8 ± 7.1 years; 70 females). Semimembranosus tendinosis was present in 66 knees (44%) in the patient population. Semimembranosus tendinosis was present in 81% of patients with meniscal tears versus 36% of patients without meniscal tears (p < 0.0001). This association remained statistically significant when adjusted for age and sex with an adjusted odds ratio of 7.0 (p < 0.0003). Models adjusted for the above covariates and containing the interaction term produced an adjusted odds ratio of 13.0 (p < 0.0001) in men, while in women this association was non-significant with an adjusted odds ratio of 2.0 (p = 0.42). Conclusions: Subjects with semimembranosus tendinosis were seven times more likely to have medial meniscal tears even when adjusting for sex and age. Soccer teams integrate specific exercises into their typical workout programs for injury prevention. This study examined the effects of hamstring exercise on paraspinal and hamstring stiffness. These findings can inform training and rehabilitation programs to improve muscle health and prevent injuries. Fifteen young, healthy males performed passive and active (submaximal) knee flexion efforts from 0°, 45°, to 90° angle of knee flexion from the prone position. Using shear-wave elastography (SWE) and surface electromyography, we measured the elastic modulus and root mean square (RMS) signal of the erector spinae (ES), multifidus (MF), semitendinosus (ST), and semimembranosus (SM) during different knee flexion angles. Passive SWE modulus at 0° was 12.44 ± 4.45 kPa (ES), 13.35 ± 6.12 kPa (MF), 22.01 ± 4.68 kPa (ST), and 21.57 ± 5.22 kPa (SM) and it was greater (p < 0.05) compared to 45° and 90°. The corresponding values during knee flexion contractions at 0° increased to 18.99 ± 6.11 kPa (ES), 20.65 ± 11.31 kPa (MF), 71.21 ± 13.88 kPa (ST), and 70.20 ± 14.29 kPa (SM) and did not differ between angles (p > 0.05). Compared to rest, the relative increase in the SWE modulus during active contraction had a median value (interquartile range) ranging from 68.11 (86.29) to 101.69 (54.33)% for the paraspinal muscles and it was moderately to strongly correlated (r > 0.672) with the corresponding increase of the hamstring muscles [ranging from 225.94 (114.72) to 463.16 (185.16)%]. The RMS signal was greater during active compared to passive conditions, and it was lower at 90° compared to 45° (for SM/ST) and 0° (for all muscles). The association between paraspinal and hamstring passive muscle stiffness indicates a potential transmission of forces through myofascial connections between the lumbar spine and the lower limbs. There is a growing interest in using by-products rich in polyphenols, such as carob pulp (Cp, Ceratonia siliqua L.), as a dietary source of antioxidants for animals. This study assesses the effects of including Cp in lambs' diet and meat display time (0, 7, 9, and 11 days) in modified atmosphere packaging on meat colour, fatty acid (FA) composition, tocopherol levels, and lipid oxidation values in the Semimembranosus muscle of 40 light lambs. The lambs were fed with concentrates supplemented with increasing Cp levels (0, 150, and 300 g/kg) for 45 days before slaughter. Metmyoglobin (MMb) and malondialdehyde (MDA) contents increased linearly with display time (p < 0.05), regardless of diet (p > 0.05). At 11 days of display, MMb (28 ± 0.8%) and MDA (0.6 ± 0.1 mg MDA/kg of meat) contents remained within the acceptable limits. The α-tocopherol content was lower in the 30% Cp group and meat (p < 0.05). Total saturated and monounsaturated FA contents (934 ± 64 and 823 ± 65 mg/100 g of meat, respectively) did not differ significantly among the groups. However, the meat from lambs fed with 30% Cp showed reduced levels of branched-chain FAs, while polyunsaturated FAs increased (p < 0.05) compared to the control lambs. The inclusion of Cp in the lamb's diet, up to 30%, did not lead to meat deterioration and improved certain quality parameters, including a healthier FA profile. Along with animal production factors, it is important to understand whether demographic factors influence untrained consumer perceptions of eating quality. This study examined the impact of demographic factors and sheepmeat consumption preferences on eating quality scores of American, Australian and Chinese untrained consumers. M. longissimus lumborum (LL) and m. semimembranosus (SM) were grilled according to sheep Meat Standards Australia protocols and evaluated by 2160 consumers for tenderness, juiciness, flavour and overall liking. Linear mixed effects models were used to analyse the impact of demographic factors and sheepmeat consumption habits on eating quality scores. Consumer age, gender, number of adults in a household and income had the strongest effect on sensory scores (P ≤ 0.05), although, the impact was often different across countries. Frequency of lamb consumption had an impact on sensory scores of American, Australian and Chinese consumers but larger sample sizes in some underrepresented subclasses for Australian and Chinese consumers are needed. Results suggest it is important to balance sensory panels for demographic factors of age, gender, number of adults and income to ensure sensory preferences are accurately represented for these particular populations.
