Recycling olive waste, a major by-product of the olive oil industry, presents significant environmental and economic benefits. This study explores the potential of olive waste (OW) by-products, specifically their individual components such as olive stones (OS), olive oily pomace (OS) and olive oil-free pomace (OF), as sustainable alternatives to wood in eco-friendly composite materials, alongside other residues such as miscanthus, spent mushroom substrate and recycled textile waste. Composite panels were produced with densities ranging from 685 to 907 kg/m3 through thermocompression. The manuscript details the production methodology and assesses the panel’s thermal performance, water absorption, and mechanical strength. The aim is to assess the viability of these alternative materials in producing composites that could serve as environmentally friendly substitutes for traditional wood-based products. Oil-free pomace is a promising and effective alternative to wood, suitable for dry environments. Composite panels composed of miscanthus or spent mushroom substrate and oil-free pomace met the EN 312 standards for general-purpose products in dry conditions, highlighting their potential for use in sustainable applications.

Cervical disc arthroplasty (CDA), also known as cervical artificial disc replacement, has become an alternative for the treatment of cervical spondylosis with radicular or myelopathic symptoms. However, there is limited literature regarding its complications and outcomes. We present two cases that developed C5 nerve palsy (C5P) following two-level CDA. Both patients presented with C5P in a delayed fashion with 2/5 and 1/5 deltoid weakness on MMT, respectively. Postoperative imaging did not demonstrate any spinal cord compression and symptoms resolved (5/5 on MMT) with conservative management in both cases. To our knowledge, these represent the first cases of delayed C5P after cervical arthroplasty reported in the literature. We performed a literature review to further enhance our knowledge regarding CDA. By understanding its pathophysiology and response to treatment, these cases can serve as a guide for spine surgeons and improve their future outcomes.

In the Galapagos Islands, the main road in Santa Cruz is one of the elements involved in bird road mortality along with vehicles and the impacted species. This study reports the number of roadkilled birds found on the road from the Itabaca Channel to Puerto Ayora, and the main factors, whether avian or environmental, involved in bird roadkill mortality. We collected individual carcasses in 2004, 2005, 2006, and 2018 with a prevalence of 278, 252, 265, and 294, respectively, across 21 species. The endemic Yellow Warbler Setophaga petechia aureola was the most affected bird. We used a PRIDIT model to rank the top avian and environmental predictors of road mortality. We found that for the sampled years, bird body size (i.e., 8–35 g) and the endemism status (i.e., endemic/native) were the main predictors of roadkill mortality, along with seasonality (i.e., hot season). Weaker predictors related to the bird (i.e., age and sex) and the environment (ecosystem, road slope, vegetation, or precipitation) are also reported as determinants of roadkill mortality. This study on avian mortality aims to inform conservation strategies to reduce the rate of wildlife avian roadkill on Santa Cruz Island and other islands with similar problems.

The formation of defects, due to drying, in robocasted ceramic objects is an important issue arising from non-uniform shrinkage of the material during this step in the process. Common methods for shrinkage measurement are not well suited to the small size of robocasted cords or the complexity of robocasted objects. Innovative methods for shrinkage measurement were developed using non-destructive optical vision techniques with computer-controlled data acquisition, allowing measurement on millimetric cords and on specific zones of a product. The study of a single porcelain cord revealed an anisometric shrinkage related to the orientation of grains during extrusion. A differential shrinkage at the macroscopic scale was also measured on a robocasted object, indicating a moisture content gradient in the material. The methods presented in this paper are of particular relevance to real-time control of the drying process for robocasted objects.

Thorough biological safety testing of topical therapeutic compounds and antimicrobials is a critical prerequisite for appropriate cutaneous wound care. Increasing pathogen resistance rates to traditional antibiotics and antifungals are driving the development and registration of novel chemical entities. Although they are notably useful for animal testing reduction, the gold standard in vitro cytotoxicity assays in continuous cell lines (HaCaT keratinocytes, 3T3 fibroblasts) may be discussed from a translational relevance standpoint. The aim of this study was thus to establish and validate a sustainable primary cell banking model with a view to performing optimized in vitro cytotoxicity assay development. Primary dermal fibroblasts and adipose-derived stem cell (ASC) types were established from four infant polydactyly sources. A multi-tiered primary cell banking model was then applied to prepare highly sustainable and standardized dermal fibroblast and ASC working cell banks (WCBs), potentially allowing for millions of biological assays to be performed. The obtained cellular materials were then validated for use in cytotoxicity assays through in vitro biosafety testing of topical antiseptics (chlorhexidine, hypochlorous acid) and an antifungal compound (AR-12) of interest for optimized burn wound care. The experimental results confirmed that IC50 values were comparable between cytotoxicity assays, which were performed with cell lines and with primary cells. The results also showed that hypochlorous acid (HOCl) displayed an enhanced toxicological profile as compared to the gold standard chlorhexidine (CLX). Generally, this study demonstrated that highly sustainable primary cell sources may be established and applied for consistent topical compound biological safety assessments with enhanced translational relevance. Overall, the study underscored the safety-oriented interest of functionally benchmarking the products that are applied on burn patient wounds for the global enhancement of burn care quality.

The plant species Cedrela odorata has been largely exploited in the timber industry due to the high demand for its wood. Therefore, C. odorata has been considered a vulnerable species since 1994, under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES). C. odorata is a key timber species included in the management and conservation plans for the Amazon and Central American rainforests. These plans include the development of genetic and genomic resources to study local populations of the species in Colombia. In this study, two novel chloroplast (cp) genomes were assembled and annotated using the MinION long-read sequencing technology. The new cp genomes were screened for sequence variants (SVs), and a total of 16 SNPs were identified, presumably unique to populations from the Amazon region in Colombia. Comparative genomics with other reported cp genomes from different populations of C. odorata support the hypothesis of intraspecific diversity associated with their place of origin. These cp genome sequences of C. odorata from Colombian individuals represent valuable genomic resources for the species, suitable for identifying novel DNA fingerprinting and barcoding applications.

Weekly paclitaxel (WP) is a chemotherapeutic cornerstone in the management of patients with platinum-resistant ovarian carcinoma. Multiple WP dosing regimens have been used clinically and studied individually. However, no formal comparison of these regimens is available to provide objective guidance in clinical decision making. The primary objective of this study was to compare the cumulative dose of paclitaxel delivered using 80 mg/m2/week, administered using either a 3 weeks out of 4 (WP3) or a 4 weeks out of 4 (WP4) regimen. The secondary objective was to evaluate the clinical outcomes associated with both regimens, including efficacy and toxicity parameters. Our retrospective cohort comprised 149 patients harboring platinum-resistant ovarian cancer treated at the CHU de Québec from January 2012 to January 2023. WP3 and WP4 reached a similar cumulative dose (1353.7 vs. 1404.2 mg/m2; p = 0.29). No significant differences in the clinical outcomes were observed. The frequency of dose reduction was significantly higher for WP4 than WP3 (44.7% vs. 4.9%; p < 0.01), mainly due to treatment intolerance from toxicity (34.0% vs. 3.9%; p < 0.01). Our data suggest that a WP3 regimen delivers a similar cumulative dose to WP4, hence offering a better tolerability profile without compromising efficacy.

A business model, defined as the underlying logic of a company, is not permanent over time. Instead, companies need to introduce innovations in the business model to be competitive in the market. This is even more critical for family firms which are continuously looking for a way to obtain sustainable growth, together with satisfactory performance. The objective of this research is to analyze the impact that business model innovation activities have in the short/long-term growth and performance of family firms. This study was obtained from panel data made up of 112 valid responses from family firms involved in business model innovation. A composite model approach has been used for data analysis. The significant components of BMI that lead to greater growth and performance are identified, the distinction between long-term and short-term effects of BMI on those outcomes is made, and BMI is proven as an authoritative source of competitive advantage and growth in family firms. Those aspects are valuable insights for researchers and managers with regards to which innovation propositions help sustain growth and performance over time.

Heritage and culture tourism involve features that commemorate a valued past. Mining heritage tourism allows visitors to experience the past, guided by former mining landscapes and engaging interactively with material artifacts. This paper introduces the CoalHeritage European project, focusing on the promotion of coal mining heritage through the production and design of the European Visual Map Journal (EVMJ). The EVMJ is a user-friendly, web-based, interactive storytelling platform that supports the transfer of industrial and geoheritage from former coal mining areas. It aims to collect and disseminate heritage assets from post-mining coal areas, informing stakeholders and promoting these sites as tourist destinations. To further enhance public awareness, several ESRI StoryMaps web apps are being created to highlight specific features of each case study across Europe. The aim of this work is to introduce coal mining heritage as a new term, present the coal heritage platform and its importance for disseminating coal heritage aspects to the public, describe the methodology used for its design, and provide a brief overview of its evolving content.

The healthcare sector has undergone a profound transformation, owing to the influential role played by Internet of Medical Things (IoMT) technology. However, there are substantial concerns over these devices’ security and privacy-preserving mechanisms. The current literature on IoMT tends to focus on specific security features, rather than wholistic security concerning Confidentiality, Integrity, and Availability (CIA Triad), and the solutions are generally simulated and not tested in a real-world network. The proposed innovative solution is known as Secure-by-Design Real-Time IoMT Architecture for e-Health Population Monitoring (RTPM) and it can manage keys at both ends (IoMT device and IoMT server) to maintain high privacy standards and trust during the monitoring process and enable the IoMT devices to run safely and independently even if the server is compromised. However, the session keys are controlled by the trusted IoMT server to lighten the IoMT devices’ overheads, and the session keys are securely exchanged between the client system and the monitoring server. The proposed RTPM focuses on addressing the major security requirements for an IoMT system, i.e., the CIA Triad, and conducts device authentication, protects from Denial of Service (DoS) and Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks, and prevents non-repudiation attacks in real time. A self-healing solution during the network failure of live e-health monitoring is also incorporated in RTPM. The robustness and stress of the system are tested with different data types and by capturing live network traffic. The system’s performance is analysed using different security algorithms with different key sizes of RSA (1024 to 8192 bits), AES (128 to 256 bits), and SHA (256 bits) to support a resource-constraint-powered system when integrating with resource-demanding secure parameters and features. In the future, other security features like intrusion detection and prevention and the user’s experience and trust level of such a system will be tested.

Antibiotic resistance is a critical public health issue. Among the multi-drug resistant microorganisms in question, Pseudomonas aeruginosa has been designated by the WHO as a priority threat. Its virulence is orchestrated through quorum sensing (QS). This sophisticated communication network relies on the release and perception of autoinducers acting as population density indicators. Therefore, the interest of a quorum silencing pharmacological approach has unfolded to quench bacterial pathogenicity without impairing growth. In this article, we reported the development of a family of indazole–quinolone hybrids as anti-virulence agents. These new biaromatic compounds were designed as potential specific QS quenchers against P. aeruginosa. Our transdisciplinary research methodology included their synthesis using palladocatalyzed cross-coupling reactions, as well as their in silico physicochemical and in vitro biological evaluation. The hit 7-chloro-2-indazolyl-4-quinolone Ie shows a promising anti-biofilm and anti-pyocyanin efficiency (35% inhibition at 25 µM and 35% inhibition at 100 µM, respectively) without an anti-pseudomonal bacteriostatic effect. It also demonstrated a moderate eukaryotic cytotoxicity. Its anti-QS properties have been investigated using metabolomic and molecular modelling studies.

The Panchthar–Ilam–Taplejung Corridor in Eastern Nepal, managed through community forestry, is a crucial habitat for the Himalayan red panda, an endangered carnivore threatened by forest degradation and illegal trade. We deployed the altitude line intercept and ten-tree plotless methods to evaluate the distribution of Himalayan red pandas and the environmental factors affecting them within four community forests, namely Singhadevi, Chitre-Hile, Chhipchhipe, and Kalikhop-Dadehli, of the corridor. We established a total of 23 transects and 92 plots, identifying 41 plots with evidence of the Himalayan red panda’s presence. The sign occurrence revealed a clumped distribution of the species across all four community forests. The Himalayan red panda signs were observed between 2200 m and 2700 m above sea level (asl) and the majority of them were from habitats with a moderate slope within elevations of 2400 m to 2500 m asl. The primary sites for the defecation were large horizontal tree branches (78.12%), followed by forest ground (15.62%) and rocks (6.25%). The dominant tree species in their habitats included Lithocarpus pachyphylla (Importance value index, IVI = 45.05), Symplocus theifolia (IVI = 37.19), Symplocos pyrifolia (IVI = 20.99), Quercus lamellosa (IVI = 19.25), and Magnolia campbellii (IVI = 17.25). Among the thirteen environmental variables examined, proximity to water, distance to road, bamboo density, and Normalized Difference Vegetation Index were identified as the major factors influencing the Himalayan red panda’s distribution. This research provides crucial insights to develop site-specific habitat management plans for community forestry.

Patients who survive critical COVID-19 frequently report post-acute sequelae of COVID-19 (PASC) such as psychosomatic and neurocognitive health problems. The goal of this study was to identify clinical risk factors and other predictors for such long-term consequences in severely ill COVID-19 patients. Adult COVID-19 intensive care unit (ICU) survivors from August 2020 to May 2021 were enrolled. A broad range of clinical, laboratory and chest computed tomography (CT) data was collected during their ICU stays. The association between ICU predictors and psychosomatic, respiratory, and neurocognitive assessments 12 months after ICU discharge was analyzed using univariate regression analysis. In 17 patients (mean age 58.9 ± 11.4 years), laboratory markers (CRP, lymphocytes, hemoglobin), ICU severity (SOFA, SAPS II, need for mechanical ventilation), complications (ARDS), and lung CT data (ground-glass opacity) were promising predictors of depressive and anxiety symptoms, fatigue, and sleep problems. Recovery of psychosomatic health such as fatigue, depression, and anxiety correlated with lower levels of inflammation and high hemoglobin levels. ARDS, mechanical ventilation, and worse SOFA and SAPS II scores were further risk factors for depressive and anxiety symptoms. Our study identified novel associations such as pulmonary ground-glass opacity being positively associated with depression, anxiety, fatigue, and insomnia levels.

The net return from milk to the producers is defined as the aggregate market income from dairy products, after deducting all processing and marketing costs. The way to distribute this net return is through the payment system, which is usually based on multiple components, mainly with a reward for fat and protein and, in the case of the New Zealand dairy industry, a penalty for milk volume. Traditionally, the value of genetic improvement is evaluated using selection index theory assuming that there is an unlimited market where all dairy products can be sold in unlimited amounts at a fixed price and therefore economic values for fat and protein are assumed to be independent of demand. The objective of this study was to estimate the value of continuous genetic improvement evaluated using a model encompassing all the dairy producers in the industry where prices of the dairy products were determined by product specific supply-demand curves. Over 10 years of genetic improvement, the present value of the benefit (10% discount rate) was estimated to be $123,000 per farm. The corresponding benefit when the markets were assumed to have fixed commodity prices was $183,000 per farm. The model revealed that systematic genetic gains had a finite duration during which incremental benefits progressively declined and would be exhausted eventually.

Companies are becoming increasingly aware of the health of their employees and are now integrating exoskeleton solutions for both prevention and job maintenance. However, the effect of using exoskeletons is still an open question. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the impact of an active lumbar exoskeleton and its passive belt on trunk kinematics and muscle activity using instrumented motion analysis. Twenty-three healthy subjects volunteered to perform three handlings of a 5 kg load (free lifting, squat lifting, and load transfer) under three different experimental conditions. The “Control” condition was when the subject did not wear any device, the “Belt” condition was when the subject wore only the passive part of the exoskeleton, and the “Exo” condition was when the subject wore the active exoskeleton. Based on the Rapid Upper Limb Assessment scale, the exoskeleton reduced the time spent in angles that were considered dangerous for the back, according to ergonomic evaluations. Furthermore, for the handling sessions, it was observed that the exoskeleton did not modify muscle activity in the abdominal–lumbar region.

In this study, the separation of lignin from a mild alkaline sugarcane bagasse extract was studied, and the impacts of different parameters on the filtration performance were evaluated. The tested parameters included transmembrane pressure (0.5–3.0 bar), shear rates (2831–22,696 s−1), temperature (20 and 40 °C), membrane molecular weight cut-off (5 and 10 kDa), and membrane material (polyethersulfone and polysulfone). During the filtration process, the permeate flux and all the main components of the extract were analyzed, including lignins (acid insoluble lignin and acid soluble lignin), sugars (xylose, arabinose, glucose, and galactose), total phenolic compounds, and phenolic acids (p-coumaric acid, ferulic acid, vanillin, and 4-hydroxybenzaldehyde). It was proved that the tested conditions had a great impact on the permeate flux and molecule retention rate. Increasing the temperature from 20 to 40 °C resulted in a much higher permeate flux for the 5 kDa PES membrane, and the impact of shear rate was greater at 40 °C for this membrane. Although the 5 kDa PES membrane could retain slightly more large molecules, i.e., acid-insoluble lignin and xylose, the 10 kDa membrane afforded greater phenolic acid removal capacity, leading to higher purity. For the 10 kDa PS membrane, the polarization layer began to form at TMP below 0.5 bar. This membrane had a lower retention rate for all molecules than the 10 kDa PES membrane.

The autonomous vehicle is an innovative field for the application of machine learning algorithms. Controlling an agent designed to drive safely in traffic is very complex as human behavior is difficult to predict. An individual’s actions depend on a large number of factors that cannot be acquired directly by visualization. The size of the vehicle, its vulnerability, its perception of the environment and weather conditions, among others, are all parameters that profoundly modify the actions that the optimized model should take. The agent must therefore have a great capacity for adaptation and anticipation in order to drive while ensuring the safety of users, especially pedestrians, who remain the most vulnerable users on the road. Deep reinforcement learning (DRL), a sub-field that is supported by the community for its real-time learning capability and the long-term temporal aspect of its objectives looks promising for AV control. In a previous article, we were able to show the strong capabilities of a DRL model with a continuous action space to manage the speed of a vehicle when approaching a pedestrian crossing. One of the points that remains to be addressed is the notion of discrete decision-making intrinsically linked to speed control. In this paper, we will present the problems of AV control during a pedestrian crossing, starting with a modelization and a DRL model with hybrid action space adapted to the scalability of a vehicle-to-pedestrian (V2P) encounter. We will also present the difficulties raised by the scalability and the curriculum-based method.

The circadian system, a vital temporal regulator influencing physiological processes, has implications for cancer development and treatment response. Our study assessed circadian timing’s impact on whole-brain radiotherapy outcomes in brain metastases for personalized cancer therapy insights. The aim of the study was to evaluate circadian influence on radiation treatment timing and its correlation with clinical outcomes and to identify patient populations benefiting from interventions synchronizing circadian rhythms, considering subgroup differences and potential disparities. An IRB-approved retrospective analysis of 237 patients undergoing whole-brain radiotherapy for brain metastases (2017–2021), receiving over 80% of treatments in the morning or afternoon, was performed. Survival analyses utilized Kaplan–Meier curves. This was a single-institution study involving patients receiving whole-brain radiotherapy. Demographic, disease, and socioeconomic parameters from electronic medical records were collected. Morning treatment (n = 158) showed a trend toward improved overall survival vs. afternoon (n = 79); the median survival was 158 vs. 79 days (p = 0.20, HR = 0.84, CI95% 0.84–0.91). Subgroup benefits for morning treatment in females (p = 0.04) and trends in controlled primary disease (p = 0.11) and breast cancer metastases (p = 0.08) were observed. Black patients exhibited diminished circadian influence. The present study emphasized chronobiological factors’ relevance in brain metastases radiation therapy. Morning treatment correlated with improved survival, particularly in specific subgroups. Potential circadian influence disparities were identified, laying a foundation for personalized cancer therapy and interventions synchronizing circadian rhythms for enhanced treatment efficacy.

The ApeTI dataset was built with the aim of retrieving physiological signals such as heart rate, breath rate, and cognitive load from thermal images of great apes. We want to develop computer vision tools that psychologists and animal behavior researchers can use to retrieve physiological signals noninvasively. Our goal is to increase the use of a thermal imaging modality in the community and avoid using more invasive recording methods to answer research questions. The first step to retrieving physiological signals from thermal imaging is their spatial segmentation to then analyze the time series of the regions of interest. For this purpose, we present a thermal imaging dataset based on recordings of chimpanzees with their face and nose annotated using a bounding box and nine landmarks. The face and landmarks’ locations can then be used to extract physiological signals. The dataset was acquired using a thermal camera at the Leipzig Zoo. Juice was provided in the vicinity of the camera to encourage the chimpanzee to approach and have a good view of the face. Several computer vision methods are presented and evaluated on this dataset. We reach mAPs of 0.74 for face detection and 0.98 for landmark estimation using our proposed combination of the Tifa and Tina models inspired by the HRNet models. A proof of concept of the model is presented for physiological signal retrieval but requires further investigation to be evaluated. The dataset and the implementation of the Tina and Tifa models are available to the scientific community for performance comparison or further applications.

The Group for the Promotion of Pharmaceutical Chemistry in Academia (GP2A) held its 31st annual conference in August 2023 at the Faculty of Pharmacy of Aix-Marseille University, Marseille, France. There were 8 keynote presentations, 10 early career researcher oral presentations and 23 poster presentations. Among them, four awards were delivered, two for best oral communications and two for the best poster presentations.

Seiches oscillations may account for an important proportion of sea level variations in nearshore environments, inducing overflow and surges while impacting the safety of marine areas. However, complementary investigations are still required to characterize seiches in coastal basins, including especially estuaries. The present study exhibited seiches characteristics in the intertidal zone of the upper Elorn estuary (western Brittany, France), within the city of Landerneau, which is regularly subjected to river overflow and inundation. This investigation relied on five-year measurements of the free-surface elevation. As recorded time series were highly discontinuous around low tide, an original data analysis technique was implemented to exhibit seiches characteristics during the different tidal cycles. Measurements revealed important seiches oscillations with heights liable to exceed 0.6 m and periods of around 45–70 min. Seiches showed furthermore a fortnightly variability with pronounced heights and an increased number of oscillations during neap tides. These variations appeared, however, to be disturbed by the additional effects of meteorological conditions, including especially the influence of wind. The number of oscillations around high tide was thus found to increase in strong wind conditions. These effects were particularly noticeable at low atmospheric pressure, suggesting a sensitivity of seiches to wind meteorological patterns during cyclonic events.

A numerical study was conducted to identify the mechanisms involved in the destabilisation of centrifugal compressors with vaneless diffusers. A stability analysis—carried out on the rotating and fixed parts of the studied machines—showed that the vaneless diffuser is a limiting component at a low mass flow rate. It was demonstrated that the reorganisation of stall patterns into recirculation in the inducer stabilises the impellers’ flow fields. As the destabilisation of vaneless diffusers has been a recurrent topic in the literature, many models have shown that it is the inlet-flow angle that drives the loss of stability. Models from the literature have estimated critical angle values using the geometry of the diffuser. Thus, for a given stage, expressing the diffuser inlet-flow angle as a function of the mass flow rate allows one to estimate its stability limit. However, this law needs to be calibrated to consider each compressor’s geometrical and aerodynamic specificities. This calibration can be achieved through single-passage steady simulations performed at stable operating points with high mass flow rates. With this methodology, a designer can estimate the stability limit of a centrifugal compressor with a vaneless diffuser from single-passage RANS calculations.

Modeling and simulation have become fundamental tools for the microclimatic analysis of greenhouses under various climatic conditions. These models allow precise control of the climate inside the structures and the optimization of their performance under any situation. In Colombia, the availability of energy balance models adapted to local greenhouses and their climate is limited, which affects the decision-making of both technical advisors and growers. This study focused on calibrating and evaluating a dynamic energy balance model to predict the thermal behavior of an innovative type of plastic-covered greenhouse designed for the Bogotá savanna. The selected model considers fundamental heat and mass transfer processes, incorporating parameters that depend on the architecture of the structure and local climatic conditions, making it suitable for protected agriculture in Colombia. The results of the post-calibration evaluation showed that the model is highly accurate, with a temperature prediction efficiency close to 86%. This ensures that the model can accurately predict the thermal behavior of the greenhouse being evaluated. It is important to note that the model can also anticipate phenomena characteristics of Colombian greenhouses, such as thermal inversion. This advance has become a valuable tool for decision-making in protected agriculture in the region.

In this study, we tackle the subject of interval quadratic equations and we aim to accurately determine the root enclosures of quadratic equations, whose coefficients constitute interval variables. This study focuses on interval quadratic equations that contain only one coefficient considered as an interval variable. The four methods reviewed here in order to solve this problem are: (i) the method of classic interval analysis used by Elishakoff and Daphnis, (ii) the direct method based on minimizations and maximizations also used by the same authors, (iii) the method of quantifier elimination used by Ioakimidis, and (iv) the interval parametrization method suggested by Elishakoff and Miglis and again based on minimizations and maximizations. We will also compare the results yielded by all these methods by using the computer algebra system Mathematica for computer evaluations (including quantifier eliminations) in order to conclude which method would be the most efficient way to solve problems relevant to interval quadratic equations.

An increasing number of dairy farmers in New Zealand (NZ) have adopted a once-a-day (OAD) milking production system, and little is known about the impact of this production system on milk protein composition. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of OAD milking on the protein composition in milk from individual cows. Milk was sampled in early, mid-, and late lactation from cows kept at Massey University farms Dairy No. 1 (OAD milking) and Dairy No. 4 (TAD milking) in Palmerston North, NZ. The yields of total milk and milk solids, the proximate composition, and the protein composition were determined. Results showed that OAD milking yielded less milk and milk solids than TAD milking. However, no significant differences in protein, fat, and lactose contents were found. While the proportions of total casein (CN), total whey proteins, αs1-CN, β-CN, and β-lactoglobulin were not affected by the milking frequency, milk from a OAD milking system contained higher proportions of αs2-CN and κ-CN and lower proportions of α-lactalbumin. These proteins also changed differently throughout the milking season in a OAD milking system than in a TAD milking system. These changes in the protein composition of the milk observed in a OAD milking system could have implications for its processing properties and product quality.

Urinary tract infection (UTI) is a common patient infection and a major public health problem today. The rapid spread of antibiotic resistance genes in Enterobacterales, particularly in Extended-spectrum beta-lactamases producing Escherichia coli (ESBL-E. coli), is compromising treatment with the antibiotics that are normally used. The aim of this study was to evaluate the level of susceptibility of uropathogenic ESBL-producing E. coli to fosfomycin as an alternative treatment. A total of 3369 samples of urine were received and processed in the Bacteriology Laboratory of the Niamey General Reference Hospital (NGRH) throughout 2021. Synergy testing was performed for phenotypic detection of ESBLs, and fosfomycin sensibility of ESBLs-producing uropathogenic E. coli isolates were determined using the Viteck-2 system. Of the 280 enterobacteria identified in the urine samples, 104 Escherichia coli isolates were positive to the synergy test. The average age of the patients was 54 ± 17. The age range of 46–65 years was the most affected by these infections. The female patients predominated over the male ones, with a prevalence of 51.90%, a sex ratio of 1.08. The ESBL-producing E. coli isolates were 0.97% resistant to fosfomycin. Fosfomycin is highly effective against uropathogenic ESBL-producing E. coli isolates. It could be used as an alternative treatment for both uncomplicated and complicated urinary tract infections.

Under the structure of compulsory education, students in the United States are required to attend school until at least 16 years of age, which can be done at a variety of educational institutions, both public and private. Amongst public schools, students are each assigned a neighborhood school but also frequently have the option to attend a choice school. While the purpose of neighborhood schools is to provide a guaranteed educational option that accommodates most students, choice schools serve varied purposes that accommodate specific learning styles and societal goals. Four types of publicly funded choice schools are magnet, charter, alternative, and virtual schools. While each was established to serve a specific societal goal, their purposes have shifted over time and have produced varied student outcomes, both academic and non-academic.

Alveolar soft part sarcoma (ASPS) is an extremely rare and aggressive soft-tissue sarcoma (STS) subtype with poor prognosis and limited response to radiation therapy and chemotherapy. Prompt recognition and referral to sarcoma centers for appropriate management are crucial for patients’ survival. The purpose of this study was to report ASPS pre-treatment imaging features and to examine the existing literature on this topic. Twelve patients (7 women, 5 men—mean age 27.1 ± 10.7 years) were included from our single-center experience. Ultrasonography (US), computed tomography (CT), and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) available were reviewed according to an analysis grid incorporating features from the latest research on STS. Clinical, histological, and outcome data were collected. MRI was available in 10 patients (83.3%), US in 7 patients (58.3%), and CT in 3 patients (25%). Mean longest tumor diameter was 7.6 ± 2.9 cm, and all tumors were deeply seated. Large peritumoral feeding vessels were systematically found and identified on ultrasonography (7/7), MRI (10/10), and CT (3/3). US revealed a well-defined heterogeneous hypoechoic pattern, with abundant flow signals in all patients (7/7). In all patients, MRI showed mildly high signal intensity (SI) on T1-WI and high SI on T2-WI and peritumoral edema. Moreover, flow-voids (due to arteriosus high-flow) into the peritumoral/intratumoral feeding vessels were detected in the MRI fluid-sensitive sequences of all patients. At baseline, whole-body contrast-enhanced CT revealed metastases in 8/12 (66.7%) patients. A pre-treatment longest diameter > 5 cm was significantly associated with distant metastases at diagnosis (p = 0.01). A maximum diameter > 5 cm represents a risk of metastatic disease at diagnosis (odds ratio = 45.0000 (95% CI: 1.4908—1358.3585), p = 0.0285). In the comprehensive literature review, we found 14 articles (case series or original research) focusing on ASPS imaging, with a total of 151 patients included. Merging our experience with the data from the existing literature, we conclude that the hallmark of ASPS imaging at presentation are the following characteristics: deep location, a slight hyperintense MRI SI on T1-WI and a hyperintense SI on T2-WI, numerous MRI flow voids, high internal vascularization, and large peritumoral feeding vessels.

The release of the large language model-based chatbot ChatGPT 3.5 in November 2022 has brought considerable attention to the subject of artificial intelligence, not only to the public. From the perspective of higher education, ChatGPT challenges various learning and assessment formats as it significantly reduces the effectiveness of their learning and assessment functionalities. In particular, ChatGPT might be applied to formats that require learners to generate text, such as bachelor theses or student research papers. Accordingly, the research question arises to what extent writing of bachelor theses is still a valid learning and assessment format. Correspondingly, in this exploratory study, the first author was asked to write his bachelor’s thesis exploiting ChatGPT. For tracing the impact of ChatGPT methodically, an autoethnographic approach was used. First, all considerations on the potential use of ChatGPT were documented in logs, and second, all ChatGPT chats were logged. Both logs and chat histories were analyzed and are presented along with the recommendations for students regarding the use of ChatGPT suggested by a common framework. In conclusion, ChatGPT is beneficial for thesis writing during various activities, such as brainstorming, structuring, and text revision. However, there are limitations that arise, e.g., in referencing. Thus, ChatGPT requires continuous validation of the outcomes generated and thus fosters learning. Currently, ChatGPT is valued as a beneficial tool in thesis writing. However, writing a conclusive thesis still requires the learner’s meaningful engagement. Accordingly, writing a thesis is still a valid learning and assessment format. With further releases of ChatGPT, an increase in capabilities is to be expected, and the research question needs to be reevaluated from time to time.

Pathogenic variants in the ryanodine receptor 1 (RYR1) gene are causative for a wide spectrum of muscular phenotypes, ranging from malignant hyperthermia over mild, non-progressive to severe congenital myopathy. Both autosomal dominant and recessive inheritance can occur, with the more severe forms usually showing recessive inheritance. However, genotype–phenotype correlations are complicated due to the large size of the gene and heterogeneous phenotypes. We present a 6-year-old patient with severe congenital myopathy, carrying a heterozygous pathogenic RYR1 variant inherited from the healthy mother. Through whole genome sequencing we identified a second, deep intronic RYR1 variant that has recently been described in another patient with severe congenital myopathy and shown to affect splicing. Segregation analyses confirmed the variants to be compound heterozygous. We compared our patient’s phenotype to that of the patient from the literature as well as five additional patients with compound heterozygous RYR1 variants from our center. The main overlapping features comprised congenital onset, predominant muscular hypotonia, and normal creatine kinase (CK) levels, while overall clinical expression varied substantially. Interestingly, both patients carrying the new intronic splice variant showed a very severe disease course. More widespread use of genome sequencing will open the way for better genotype–phenotype correlations.

Brewer’s spent grains (BSG) offer valuable opportunities for valorization beyond its conventional use as animal feed. Among its components, lignin—a natural polymer with inherent antioxidant properties—holds significant industrial potential. This work investigates the use of microwave-assisted extraction combined with acidic natural deep eutectic solvents (NaDESs) for efficient lignin recovery, evaluating three different NaDES formulations. The results indicate that choline chloride–lactic acid (ChCl-LA), a NaDES with superior thermal stability as confirmed via thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), is an ideal solvent for lignin extraction at 150 °C and 15 min, achieving a balance of high yield and quality. ChCl-LA also demonstrated good solubility and cell disruption capabilities, while microwaves significantly reduced processing time and severity. Under optimal conditions, i.e., 150 °C, 15 min, in the presence of ChCl-LA NaDES, the extracted lignin achieved a purity of up to 79% and demonstrated an IC50 (inhibitory concentration 50%) of approximately 0.022 mg/L, indicating a relatively strong antioxidant activity. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and 2D-HSQC NMR (heteronuclear single quantum coherence nuclear magnetic resonance) spectroscopy confirmed the successful isolation and preservation of its structural integrity. This study highlights the potential of BSG as a valuable lignocellulosic resource and underscores the effectiveness of acidic NaDESs combined with microwave extraction for lignin recovery.

In recent years, additive manufacturing (AM) has been recognized as a transformative force in the dental industry, with the ability to address escalating demand, expedite production timelines, and reduce labor-intensive processes. Despite the proliferation of three-dimensional printing technologies in dentistry, the absence of well-established post-processing protocols has posed formidable challenges. This comprehensive review paper underscores the critical importance of precision in post-processing techniques for ensuring the acquisition of vital properties, encompassing mechanical strength, biocompatibility, dimensional accuracy, durability, stability, and aesthetic refinement in 3D-printed dental devices. Given that digital light processing (DLP) is the predominant 3D printing technology in dentistry, the main post-processing techniques and effects discussed in this review primarily apply to DLP printing. The four sequential stages of post-processing support removal, washing, secondary polymerization, and surface treatments are systematically navigated, with each phase requiring meticulous evaluation and parameter determination to attain optimal outcomes. From the careful selection of support removal tools to the consideration of solvent choice, washing methodology, and post-curing parameters, this review provides a comprehensive guide for practitioners and researchers. Additionally, the customization of post-processing approaches to suit the distinct characteristics of different resin materials is highlighted. A comprehensive understanding of post-processing techniques is offered, setting the stage for informed decision-making and guiding future research endeavors in the realm of dental additive manufacturing.

A comparative study of the structural integrity of an opaque recycled poly(ethylene terephthalate) (rPET-O) has been carried out with two types of modified rPET-O by applying reactive extrusion techniques, namely (a) using a multi-epoxide reactive agent (REx-rPET-O) and (b) a 90/10 (wt/wt) rPET-O/polycarbonate (PC) blend. The chemical modifications introduced during reactive extrusion were confirmed using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and rheological dynamic analysis (RDA). For the quantification of the fracture parameters, an instrumented pendulum impact testing machine was used using specimens in SENB configuration. The structural modifications generated during reactive extrusion promote an increase of between 16 (REx-rPET-O) and 20% (rPET-O/PC) in the stress-intensity factor (KQ) compared to unmodified rPET-O. The most significant differences between both modifications are registered in the “specific work of fracture” (wf) (alternative parameter to the standardized impact strength), where an increase of 61% is reached for the case of rPET-O/PC and only 11% for REx-rPET-O. This trend can be attributed to the type of reactive modification that is generated, namely chain branching (REx-rPET-O) vs. the generation of a random copolymer “in situ” (rPET-O/PC). This copolymer decreases the crystallization capacity and degree of crystalline perfection of rPET-O, promoting an increase in the critical hydrostatic stress conditions for the generation of crazing and crack propagation.

New information and communication technologies have a significant potential to increase the transparency of aquifer management and improve groundwater governance. This research experiments the introduction of a mobile application that allows users to transfer and share information about their groundwater extractions and receive agroclimatic information and groundwater data. It takes place in three different aquifers in Morocco, Portugal, and Spain, each with varied institutional frameworks. This research tests and evaluates the potential of enhanced information systems and citizen science applied to groundwater management and aims to identify some factors that facilitate or hinder their adoption and implementation. To do this, the researchers developed a 4-year plan based on surveys, semi-structured interviews, meetings, participatory workshops, and public round tables with local actors. The main lesson learned from the comparative analysis of these three experiences is that the use of enhanced information systems is more positively perceived, accepted, and adopted when an appropriate social and institutional framework exists and that the more consolidated this framework is, the easier they will be to implement and develop enhanced information systems.

The consequences of climate change along with diverse food regulations and agricultural practices worldwide are complexifying the occurrence and management of chemical contaminants in food. In this context, we present an ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography high-resolution mass spectrometry (LC-HRMS) approach for the simultaneous identification and quantitation of over 1100 pesticide residues, mycotoxins, and plant toxins in cereals and fruits and vegetables. Analytical conditions were optimized to maximize the scope of the targeted molecules, the reliability of compound identification, and quantification performance within a single method. The method was further transferred and validated in another laboratory to assess its ruggedness. Validation according to the SANTE 11312/2021v2 guidelines showed that 92% and 98% of the molecules fulfill the quantification criteria at the lowest validated level in the cereals and fruits and vegetables groups, respectively. Analysis of fifteen certified reference materials led to a 96% satisfactory rate of z-scores confirming method’s competitiveness. Furthermore, the occurrence of these contaminants was studied in 205 cereals and grains samples collected worldwide. The low µg/kg quantification limits make this LC-HRMS method a valuable tool to ensure compliance toward regulations and to screen for non-regulated substances for which occurrence data are crucial for an appropriate risk evaluation.

This paper presents a comprehensive study of hydrogenated amorphous silicon (a-Si)-based detectors, utilizing electrical characterization, Raman spectroscopy, photoemission, and inverse photoemission techniques. The unique properties of a-Si have sparked interest in its application for radiation detection in both physics and medicine. Although amorphous silicon (a-Si) is inherently a highly defective material, hydrogenation significantly reduces defect density, enabling its use in radiation detector devices. Spectroscopic measurements provide insights into the intricate relationship between the structure and electronic properties of a-Si, enhancing our understanding of how specific configurations, such as the choice of substrate, can markedly influence detector performance. In this study, we compare the performance of a-Si detectors deposited on two different substrates: crystalline silicon (c-Si) and flexible Kapton. Our findings suggest that detectors deposited on Kapton exhibit reduced sensitivity, despite having comparable noise and leakage current levels to those on crystalline silicon. We hypothesize that this discrepancy may be attributed to the substrate material, differences in film morphology, and/or the alignment of energy levels. Further measurements are planned to substantiate these hypotheses.

Synthetic aperture interferometry (SAI) is a signal processing technique that mixes the signals collected by pairs of elementary antennas to obtain high-resolution images with the aid of a computer. This note aims at studying the effects of the distance between the synthetic aperture interferometer and an observed scene with respect to the size of the antenna array onto the imaging capabilities of the instrument. Far-field conditions and near-field ones are compared from an algebraic perspective with the aid of simulations conducted at microwave frequencies with the Microwave Imaging Radiometer by Aperture Synthesis (MIRAS) onboard the Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity (SMOS) mission. Although in both cases the signals kept by pairs of elementary antennas are cross-correlated to obtain complex visibilities, there are several differences that deserve attention at the modeling level, as well as at the imaging one. These particularities are clearly identified, and they are all taken into account in this study: near-field imaging is investigated with spherical waves, without neglecting any terms, whereas far-field imaging approximation is considered with plane waves according to the Van–Citter Zernike theorem. From an algebraic point of view, although the corresponding modeling matrices are both rank-deficient, we explain why the singular value distributions of these matrices are different. It is also shown how the angular synthesized point-spread function of the antenna array, whose shape varies with the distance to the instrument, can be helpful for estimating the boundary between the Fresnel region and the Fraunhofer one. Finally, whatever the region concerned by the aperture synthesis operation, it is shown that the imaging capabilities and the performances in the near-field and far-field regions are almost the same, provided the appropriate modeling matrix is taken into account.

Drought is a widespread natural hazard resulting from an extended period of reduced rainfall, with significant socioeconomic and ecological consequences. Drought severity can impact food security globally due to its high spatial and temporal coverage. The primary objective of this paper consists of a comparative spatiotemporal analysis of environmental extremes (drought/wetness) through the estimation of a twelve-month Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI12) between three distinct vulnerable agricultural regions in the Mediterranean basin (i.e., Spain, Lebanon and Tunisia), under a climate change environment in the last 38 years (1982–2020). The added value of this paper lies in the simultaneous estimation of temporal and spatial variability of drought and wetness periodic events, paying special attention to the geographical patterns of these extremes both in annual and interannual (seasonal) time scales. The results indicated that Spain and Tunisia (western Mediterranean) exhibit similar patterns over the studied period, while Lebanon demonstrates contrasting trends. Comparing the two extreme dry hydrological years, the Spanish study area faced the highest drought intensity, areal extent and duration (SPI12 = −1.18; −1.84; 28–78%; 9–12 months), followed by the Lebanese (SPI12 = −1.28; −1.39; 37–50%; 7–12 months) and the Tunisian ones (SPI12 = −1.05; −1.08; 10–34%; 8 months). Concerning the wettest hydrological years, the Lebanese study domain has recorded the highest SPI12 values, areal extent and duration (SPI12 = 1.58; 2.28; 66–83%; 8–11 months), followed by the Tunisian (SPI12 = 1.55; 1.79; 49–73%; 7–10 months) and Spanish one (SPI12 = 1.07; 1.99; 21–73%; 4–11 months). The periodicity of drought/wetness episodes is about 20 years in Spanish area and 10 years in the Lebanese area (for drought events), whereas there seems no periodicity in the Tunisian one. Understanding the spatial distribution of drought is crucial for targeted mitigation strategies in high-risk areas, potentially avoiding broad, resource-intensive measures across entire regions.

Uvsq-Sat NG is a French 6U CubeSat (10 × 20 × 30 cm) of the International Satellite Program in Research and Education (INSPIRE) designed primarily for observing greenhouse gases (GHG) such as CO2 and CH4, measuring the Earth’s radiation budget (ERB), and monitoring solar spectral irradiance (SSI) at the top-of-atmosphere (TOA). It epitomizes an advancement in CubeSat technology, showcasing its enhanced capabilities for comprehensive Earth observation. Scheduled for launch in 2025, the satellite carries a compact and miniaturized near-infrared (NIR) spectrometer capable of performing observations in both nadir and solar directions within the wavelength range of 1100 to 2000 nm, with a spectral resolution of 7 nm and a 0.15° field of view. This study outlines the preflight calibration process of the Uvsq-Sat NG NIR spectrometer (UNIS), with a focus on the spectral response function and the absolute calibration of the instrument. The absolute scale of the UNIS spectrometer was accurately calibrated with a quartz-halogen lamp featuring a coiled-coil tungsten filament, certified by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) as a standard of spectral irradiance. Furthermore, this study details the ground-based measurements of direct SSI through atmospheric NIR windows conducted with the UNIS spectrometer. The measurements were obtained at the Pommier site (45.54°N, 0.83°W) in Charentes–Maritimes (France) on 9 May 2024. The objective of these measurements was to verify the absolute calibration of the UNIS spectrometer conducted in the laboratory and to provide an extraterrestrial solar spectrum using the Langley-plot technique. By extrapolating the data to AirMass Zero (AM0), we obtained high-precision results that show excellent agreement with SOLAR-HRS and TSIS-1 HSRS solar spectra. At 1.6 μm, the SSI was determined to be 238.59 ± 3.39 mW.m−2.nm−1 (k = 2). These results demonstrate the accuracy and reliability of the UNIS spectrometer for both SSI observations and GHG measurements, providing a solid foundation for future orbital data collection and analysis.

The shaft hydropower plant (SHPP) is a novel hydraulic concept for low-head hydropower sites with several environmental and operational advantages over conventional layouts. However, the first two projects implementing this concept have shown comparatively high construction costs and project risks. Therefore, further optimization is required to increase economic attractiveness and enable broader market adoption. Initial model tests recommend a square-shaped shaft inlet with a three-sided approach flow for low-loss and fish-friendly inflow conditions. Yet, this design requires significant space for structural implementation and may be unsuitable for use with multiple shafts or as an extension of non-powered dams and weirs. This research paper presents the application of a computational fluid dynamics simulation setup to evaluate the hydraulic performance of various design configurations, especially alternative design layouts with a one-sided approach flow without further physical model tests. The simulation setup is calibrated against observations including head loss and velocity measurements from the physical model tests, and its satisfactory performance enables the analysis of alternative design layouts. This study aims to derive the most significant design parameters for achieving the desired hydraulic conditions at the intake. Increasing the flow depth before the intake and enlarging the inlet area have the most significant impact, while increasing the overflow of the front gate has the least significant effect. The chosen CFD application is deemed suitable for hydraulic design optimization and provides guidance on the key parameters to focus on for tailored site-specific design development.

Bacterial nanomachines represent remarkable feats of evolutionary engineering, showcasing intricate molecular mechanisms that enable bacteria to perform a diverse array of functions essential to persist, thrive, and evolve within ecological and pathological niches. Injectosomes and bacterial flagella represent two categories of bacterial nanomachines that have been particularly well studied both at the molecular and functional levels. Among the diverse functionalities of these nanomachines, bistability emerges as a fascinating phenomenon, underscoring their dynamic and complex regulation as well as their contribution to shaping the bacterial community behavior during the infection process. In this review, we examine two closely related bacterial nanomachines, the type 3 secretion system, and the flagellum, to explore how the bistability of molecular-scale devices shapes the bacterial eco-pathological life cycle.

To reduce membrane fouling during the processing of highly pulpy fruit juices into clarified beverages, a crossflow Sono-Microfiltration (SMF) system was employed, strategically equipped with an ultrasonic probe for the direct application of low-frequency ultrasound (LFUS) to the juice just before the entrance to the ceramic membrane. Operating conditions were standardized, and the application of LFUS pulses in both corrective and preventive modes was investigated. The effect of SMF on the physicochemical properties and the total soluble phenol (TSP) content of the clarified juice was also evaluated. The distance of ultrasonic energy irradiation guided the selection of the LFUS probe. Amplitude conditions and ultrasonic pulses were more effective in the preventive mode and did not cause membrane damage, reducing the operation time of jackfruit juice by up to 50% and increasing permeability by up to 81%. The SMF did not alter the physicochemical parameters of the clarified juice, and the measured LFUS energy ranges did not affect the TSP concentration during the process. This study is the first to apply LFUS directly to the feed stream in a pilot-scale crossflow microfiltration system to reduce the fouling of ceramic membranes and maintain bioactive compounds in jackfruit juice.

Biomass can be converted into energy/fuel by different techniques, such as pyrolysis, gasification, and others. In the case of pyrolysis, biomass can be converted into a crude bio-oil around 50–75% yield. However, the direct use of this crude bio-oil is impractical due to its high content of oxygenated compounds, which provide inferior properties compared to those of fossil-derived bio-oil, such as petroleum. Consequently, bio-oil needs to be upgraded by physical processes (filtration, emulsification, among others) and/or chemical processes (esterification, cracking, hydrodeoxygenation, among others). In contrast, hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) can effectively increase the calorific value and improve the acidity and viscosity of bio-oils through reaction pathways such as cracking, decarbonylation, decarboxylation, hydrocracking, hydrodeoxygenation, and hydrogenation, where catalysts play a crucial role. This article first focuses on the general aspects of biomass, subsequent bio-oil production, its properties, and the various methods of upgrading pyrolytic bio-oil to improve its calorific value, pH, viscosity, degree of deoxygenation (DOD), and other attributes. Secondly, particular emphasis is placed on the process of converting model molecules and bio-oil via HDO using catalysts based on nickel and nickel combined with other active elements. Through these phases, readers can gain a deeper understanding of the HDO process and the reaction mechanisms involved. Finally, the different equipment used to obtain an improved HDO product from bio-oil is discussed, providing valuable insights for the practical application of this reaction in pyrolysis bio-oil production.

The fabrication of core–satellite (CS) assemblies offers a versatile strategy for tailoring the optical properties of plasmonic nanomaterials. In addition to key factors like size, shape, and spatial arrangement of individual components, the combination of plasmonic units with different compositions (e.g., gold and silver) has been demonstrated to produce materials with enhanced properties and functionalities applicable across a range of fields. Notably, several CS assembly variants have emerged as promising substrates for surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS). In this study, we address a gap in the knowledge by conducting a systematic cross-comparison of the optical and SERS properties of highly bright homo- and bimetallic CS assemblies. We evaluated the SERS efficiencies of these different superstructures across various excitation wavelengths and supported our findings with numerical simulations. The insights gained from this study offer a valuable foundation for researchers seeking to select and optimize the most suitable CS assemblies for their given SERS application.

Drug Delivery Systems (DDSs) of known drugs are prominent candidates for new and more effective treatments of various diseases, as they may increase drug solubility, dissolution velocity, and bioavailability. Mitotane (o,p′-dichlorodimethyl dichloroethane [o,p′-DDD]) is used for the treatment of adrenocortical cancer and, occasionally, Cushing’s syndrome. However, the efficacy of mitotane is limited by its low oral bioavailability, caused by its extremely poor aqueous solubility. This research explores the development of a new powder self-emulsifying drug delivery system (P-SEDDS) for mitotane to improve its oral bioavailability. The study focuses on the new concept of a mitotane-loaded P-SEDDS to overcome the challenges associated with its limited solubility and high logP, thereby improving its therapeutic efficacy, reducing off-target toxicity, and avoiding first-pass metabolism. The P-SEDDS formulations were meticulously designed using only α-cyclodextrin and oil, with the goal of achieving a stable and efficient P-SEDDS. The optimized formulation was characterized for pharmaceutical properties, and its pharmacokinetic behavior was examined in rats. The results demonstrated a significant enhancement in the bioavailability of mitotane when delivered through the P-SEDDS, attributed to the increased dissolution velocity and improved absorption of the poorly water-soluble drug. The results suggest that a mitotane-loaded P-SEDDS has distinctly enhanced in vitro and in vivo performance compared with conventional mitotane formulations (Lysodren®), which leads to the conclusion that the P-SEDDS formulation could be a viable and effective strategy for improving the dissolution rate and bioavailability of poorly aqueous-soluble ingredients.

Given the pressing climate and sustainability challenges, shifting industrial processes towards environmentally friendly practices is imperative. Among various strategies, the generation of green, flexible materials combined with efficient reutilization of biomass stands out. This review provides a comprehensive analysis of the hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) process as a sustainable approach for developing carbonaceous materials from biomass. Key parameters influencing hydrochar preparation are examined, along with the mechanisms governing hydrochar formation and pore development. Then, this review explores the application of hydrochars in supercapacitors, offering a novel comparative analysis of the electrochemical performance of various biomass-based electrodes, considering parameters such as capacitance, stability, and textural properties. Biomass-based hydrochars emerge as a promising alternative to traditional carbonaceous materials, with potential for further enhancement through the incorporation of extrinsic nanoparticles like graphene, carbon nanotubes, nanodiamonds and metal oxides. Of particular interest is the relatively unexplored use of transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs), with preliminary findings demonstrating highly competitive capacitances of up to 360 F/g when combined with hydrochars. This exceptional electrochemical performance, coupled with unique material properties, positions these biomass-based hydrochars interesting candidates to advance the energy industry towards a greener and more sustainable future.

The Chukchi Sea is an open estuary in the southwestern Arctic. Its near-surface salinities are higher than those of the surrounding open Arctic waters due to the key inflow of saltier and warmer Pacific waters through the Bering Strait. This salinity distribution may suggest that interannual changes in the Bering Strait mass transport are the sole and dominant factor shaping the salinity distribution in the downstream Chukchi Sea. Using satellite sea surface salinity (SSS) retrievals and altimetry-based estimates of the Bering Strait transport, the relationship between the Strait transport and Chukchi Sea SSS distributions is analyzed from 2010 onward, focusing on the ice-free summer to fall period. A comparison of five different satellite SSS products shows that anomalous SSS spatially averaged over the Chukchi Sea during the ice-free period is consistent among them. Observed interannual temporal change in satellite SSS is confirmed by comparison with collocated ship-based thermosalinograph transect datasets. Bering Strait transport variability is known to be driven by the local meridional wind stress and by the Pacific-to-Arctic sea level gradient (pressure head). This pressure head, in turn, is related to an Arctic Oscillation-like atmospheric mean sea level pattern over the high-latitude Arctic, which governs anomalous zonal winds over the Chukchi Sea and affects its sea level through Ekman dynamics. Satellite SSS anomalies averaged over the Chukchi Sea show a positive correlation with preceding months’ Strait transport anomalies. This correlation is confirmed using two longer (>40-year), separate ocean data assimilation models, with either higher- (0.1°) or lower-resolution (0.25°) spatial resolution. The relationship between the Strait transport and Chukchi Sea SSS anomalies is generally stronger in the low-resolution model. The area of SSS response correlated with the Strait transport is located along the northern coast of the Chukotka Peninsula in the Siberian Coastal Current and adjacent zones. The correlation between wind patterns governing Bering Strait variability and Siberian Coastal Current variability is driven by coastal sea level adjustments to changing winds, in turn driving the Strait transport. Due to the Chukotka coastline configuration, both zonal and meridional wind components contribute.

Accurate detection of drought stress in plants is essential for water use efficiency and agricultural output. Hyperspectral imaging (HSI) provides a non-invasive method in plant phenotyping, allowing the long-term monitoring of plant health due to sensitivity to subtle changes in leaf constituents. The broad spectral range of HSI enables the development of different vegetation indices (VIs) to analyze plant trait responses to multiple stresses, such as the combination of nutrient and drought stresses. However, known VIs may underperform when subjected to multiple stresses. This study presents new VIs in tandem with machine learning models to identify drought stress in wheat plants under varying nitrogen (N) levels. A pot wheat experiment was set up in the glasshouse with four treatments: well-watered high-N (WWHN), well-watered low-N (WWLN), drought-stress high-N (DSHN) and drought-stress low-N (DSLN). In addition to ensuring that plants were watered according to the experiment design, photosynthetic rate (Pn) and stomatal conductance (gs) (which are used to assess plant drought stress) were taken regularly, serving as the ground truth data for this study. The proposed VIs, together with known VIs, were used to train three classification models: support vector machines (SVM), random forest (RF), and deep neural networks (DNN) to classify plants based on their drought status. The proposed VIs achieved more than 0.94 accuracy across all models, and their performance further increased when combined with known VIs. The combined VIs were used to train three regression models to predict the stomatal conductance and photosynthetic rates of plants. The random forest regression model performed best, suggesting that it could be used as a stand-alone tool to forecast gs and Pn and track drought stress in wheat. This study shows that combining hyperspectral data with machine learning can effectively monitor and predict drought stress in crops, especially in varying nitrogen conditions.

The Total Carbon Column Observing Network (TCCON) and the Infrared Working Group of the Network for the Detection of Atmospheric Composition Change (NDACC-IRWG) are two ground-based networks that provide the retrieved concentrations of up to 30 atmospheric trace gases, using solar absorption spectrometry. Both networks provide reference measurements for the validation of satellites and models. TCCON concentrates on long-lived greenhouse gases (GHGs) for carbon cycle studies and validation. The number of sites is limited, and the geographical coverage is uneven, covering mainly Europe and the USA. A better distribution of stations is desired to improve the representativeness of the data for various atmospheric conditions and surface conditions and to cover a large latitudinal distribution. The two successive Fiducial Reference Measurements for Greenhouse Gases European Space Agency projects (FRM4GHG and FRM4GHG2) aim at the assessment of several low-cost portable instruments for precise measurements of GHGs to complement the existing ground-based sites. Several types of low spectral resolution Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectrometers manufactured by Bruker, namely an EM27/SUN, a Vertex70, a fiber-coupled IRCube, and a Laser Heterodyne spectro-Radiometer (LHR) developed by UK Rutherford Appleton Laboratory are the participating instruments to achieve the Fiducial Reference Measurements (FRMs) status. Intensive side-by-side measurements were performed using all four instruments next to the Bruker IFS 125HR high spectral resolution FTIR, performing measurements in the NIR (TCCON configuration) and MIR (NDACC configuration) spectral range. The remote sensing measurements were complemented by AirCore launches, which provided in situ vertical profiles of target gases traceable to the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) reference scale. The results of the intercomparisons are shown and discussed. Except for the EM27/SUN, all other instruments, including the reference TCCON spectrometer, needed modifications during the campaign period. The EM27/SUN and the Vertex70 provided stable and precise measurements of the target gases during the campaign with quantified small biases. As part of the FRM4GHG project, one EM27/SUN is now used as a travel standard for the verification of column-integrated GHG measurements. The extension of the Vertex70 to the MIR provides the opportunity to retrieve additional concentrations of N2O, CH4, HCHO, and OCS. These MIR data products are comparable to the retrieval results from the high-resolution IFS 125HR spectrometer as operated by the NDACC. Our studies show the potential for such types of spectrometers to be used as a travel standard for the MIR species. An enclosure system with a compact solar tracker and meteorological station has been developed to house the low spectral resolution portable FTIR systems for performing solar absorption measurements. This helps the spectrometers to be mobile and enables autonomous operation, which will help to complement the TCCON and NDACC networks by extending the observational capabilities at new sites for the observation of GHGs and additional air quality gases. The development of the retrieval software allows comparable processing of the Vertex70 type of spectra as the EM27/SUN ones, therefore bringing them under the umbrella of the COllaborative Carbon Column Observing Network (COCCON). A self-assessment following the CEOS-FRM Maturity Matrix shows that the COCCON is able to provide GHG data products of FRM quality and can be used for either short-term campaigns or long-term measurements to complement the high-resolution FTIR networks.

Background: The quantification of electromyographic activity using surface electrodes is invaluable for understanding gait disorders in patients with central nervous system lesions. We propose to evaluate a commercially available low-cost system compared to a reference system in participants with stroke-related movement disorders in functional situations. Methods: Three hemiparetic participants performed three functional tasks: two treadmill walks at different speeds and a sit-to-stand test. The vastus lateralis and gastrocnemius medialis muscles were equipped with two EMG sensors. The comparison between the two EMG systems was based on 883 identified cycles. Spearman’s correlation coefficients (SCs), linear correlation coefficients (LCCs), and cross-correlation coefficients (CCCs) were calculated. Results: The main results indicate good to very good similarity of the EMG signals collected from the two tested sEMG systems. In the comfortable-walking condition, an SC of 0.894 ± 0.091 and an LCC of 0.909 ± 0.094 were noted. In the fast-walking condition, an SC of 0.918 ± 0.064 and an LCC of 0.935 ± 0.056 were observed. For the 1 min sit-to-stand test, an SC of 0.880 ± 0.058 and an LCC of 0.881 ± 0.065 were noted. Conclusions: This study demonstrates good to very good similarity between the two sEMG systems, enabling the analysis of muscle activity during functional tasks.
