Background and Objectives: This study analyzes the issues of position dislocation of the head of the superior poles and lateral points of the outer edge of the middle divisions of each of the thyroid lobes (TL) changes. The purpose was to provide an intravital position study of the clinical anatomy of the middle and superior poles of the thyroid gland (TG). Materials and Methods: We used data on anthropometry obtained during the study and data from MRI of the neck organs and anatomical formations of 100 healthy individuals, comprising 55 (55%) female and 45 (45%) male participants. To evaluate the data obtained in the examined group, the minimum probability value was 0.95 (95% confidence interval or p < 0.05). Results: Maximum flexion of the neck the distance from the center of the jugular notch to the lateral points of the outer edge of the middle parts of the TL decreases in all groups of but mostly in male ectomorphs; the same distance to the superior poles of the TG changes most in ectomorphic males on the right by 38.9% (p value < 0.001) and mesomorphic females on the left by 37.8% (p value < 0.001); in rotation to the left, the maximum was found in male ectomorphs, which decreased by 9.5% on the left (p value < 0.001) and by 7.3% on the right (p value < 0.001). Conclusions: this study provided new information about the intravital anatomy of the TG position, of the superior poles, and the lateral points of the middle part of its lobes.

The roots and rhizomes of Rubia tinctorum L. have been widely used both for industrial and medicinal purposes for centuries. The primary biologically active substances from Rubia tinctorum L. roots and rhizomes are anthraquinone derivatives such as ruberythric acid and lucidin-3-primeveroside. Their identification and quantification are carried out by various analytical methods, requiring a complicated sample preparation as well as special reagents and reference samples. However, NMR spectroscopy has no limitations of this kind. In this work, we have developed and validated a new express and standard-free method for the qualitative and quantitative analysis of ruberythric acid and lucidin-3-primeveroside by 1H NMR spectroscopy in the extracts from the roots and rhizomes of Rubia tinctorum L. In this work, we have optimized the conditions of the sample preparation and registration of 1H NMR spectra, determined the optimal solvent and reference compound and confirmed the obtained results by HPLC-UV-MS.

Inferior alveolar nerve block (IANB) is one of the most common procedures in operative dentistry, and a deep understanding of the normal anatomical variation of the pterygomandibular space (PM) is essential for its safe and successful administration. This cadaveric anatomical study aimed to use A-silicone injections to evaluate the volume of the PM. This study was conducted using 46 human cadaver heads (25 males and 21 females). A craniometric analysis was performed using the cadavers’ ages, the number of silicone cartridges (carpules) used to fill the pterygomandibular space, Izard’s Facial Index (FI), and the Cranial Index (CI). A Halstead mandibular block was performed by injecting 1.7 mL A-silicone cartridges (as an equivalent to standard local aesthetic carpules volume) into the PM. The cured silicone was extracted from the dissected mandibles. The volume (length, width, and thickness) of the extracted silicone and the number of silicone cartridges used to fill the space were evaluated. The results showed that there are statistically significant positive correlations between the CI and the width of the right PM, as well as the width and length of the left PM. A statistically significant correlation was found between the width of the left PM and the age of the cadaveric heads; the higher the age, the thicker the space on both sides. The volume of the PM corresponded to 1.5 cartridges on average.

Our study aimed to clarify the anatomical features of the zygomatic, upper masseteric, lower masseteric and mandibular ligaments and their possible contribution to age-related gravitational ptosis. The study was carried out by the method of layered dissection of fresh cadavers. In several observations, the zygomatic ligament is represented by the fibers originating from the zygomaticus major muscle fibers. It is a true ligament with the fibers inserted directly into the skin. The upper and lower masseteric ligaments originate from the parotideomasseteric fascia and weave into the thickness of the SMAS. The mandibular ligament consists of two connective tissue laminae originating from the parotideomasseteric fascia at the lower edge of the mandible and from the inner surface of this fascia, along the anterior edge of the masseter muscle, skirting the facial vein sheath and the facial artery, traveling toward the platysma and the depressor anguli oris muscle, and merging with their fibers. The zygomatic ligament should be considered an osteo-musculocutaneous ligament, emphasizing the role of the associated zygomaticus major muscle in the mechanism of aging. The upper and lower masseteric and mandibular ligaments are false fascio-SMAS ligaments rather than osteo-cutaneous ones, playing the barrier role and fixing the superficial fascia and the platysma muscle.

Background and Objectives: There are many surgical techniques for oroantral communication treatment, one of which is the buccal fat pad. Of particular interest is the high reparative potential of the buccal fat pad, which may be contributed to by the presence of mesenchymal stem cells. The purpose of this work is to evaluate the reparative potential of BFP cells using morphological and immunohistochemical examination. Materials and Methods: 30 BFP samples were provided by the Clinic of Maxillofacial and Plastic Surgery of the Russian University of Medicine (Moscow, Russia) from 28 patients. Morphological examination of 30 BFP samples was performed at the Institute of Clinical Morphology and Digital Pathology of Sechenov University. Hematoxylin–eosin, Masson trichrome staining and immunohistochemical examination were performed to detect MSCs using primary antibodies CD133, CD44 and CD10. Results: During staining with hematoxylin–eosin and Masson’s trichrome, we detected adipocytes of white adipose tissue united into lobules separated by connective tissue layers, a large number of vessels of different calibers, as well as the general capsule of BFP. The thin connective tissue layers contained neurovascular bundles. Statistical processing of the results of the IHC examination of the samples using the Mann–Whitney criterion revealed that the total number of samples in which the expression of CD44, CD10 and CD133 antigens was confirmed was statistically significantly higher than the number of samples where the expression was not detected (p < 0.05). Conclusions: During the morphological study of the BFP samples, we revealed statistically significant signs of MSCs presence (p < 0.05), including in the brown fat tissue, which proves the high reparative potential of this type of tissue and can make the BFP a choice option among other autogenous donor materials when eliminating OAC and other surgical interventions in the maxillofacial region.

Poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) physical cryogels that contained the additives of o-, m-, and p-bis-phenols or phenol were prepared, and their physico-chemical characteristics and macroporous morphology and the solute release dynamics were evaluated. These phenolic additives caused changes in the viscosity of initial PVA solutions before their freeze–thaw processing and facilitated the growth in the rigidity of the resultant cryogels, while their heat endurance decreased. The magnitude of the effects depended on the interposition of phenolic hydroxyls in the molecules of the used additives and was stipulated by their H-bonding with PVA OH-groups. Subsequent rinsing of such “primary” cryogels with pure water led to the lowering of their rigidity. The average size of macropores inside these heterophase gels also depended on the additive type. It was found also that the release of phenolic substances from the additive-containing cryogels occurred via virtually a free diffusion mechanism; therefore, drug delivery systems such as PVA cryogels loaded with either pyrocatechol, resorcinol, hydroquinone, or phenol, upon the in vitro agar diffusion tests, exhibited antibacterial activity typical of these phenols. The promising biomedical potential of the studied nanocomposite gel materials is supposed.

Injuries to humans caused by wild animals, particularly bears, are rarely mentioned in the literature. Such injuries are frequent in Siberia, which is a territory surrounded by dense forests inhabited by brown bears. In the last 4 months alone (September–December 2023), four bear attacks on humans were registered in Khakassia, Russia. This article presents a clinical case of rehabilitating a patient after a bear attack, who suffered multiple fragmentary fractures of the facial skeleton with displaced bone fragments, subcutaneous emphysema of the soft tissues of the face, damage to the parietal and right occipital regions and paranasal sinus hemorrhage on the left side. The nature of the injuries was enhanced by trauma to the upper extremity caused by the patient defending himself against the animal. In addition to the damage to his face, the bear tried to open his cranium, as evidenced by four furrows caused by its canines, including two each on the frontal and occipital bones of the skull. The patient’s complex treatment included both maxillofacial and reconstructive surgeries, and outpatient treatment involved the formation of normotrophic scars using a neodymium laser and injections of a heterogeneous composition consisting of microparticles of “crosslinked” collagen of animal origin placed in a gel identical to the natural extracellular matrix.

The papaya plant (Carica papaya L.) is tree-like fruit plant cultivated throughout the tropics and subtropics. The aim of this study was to compare the physicochemical properties, fatty acid, sterols, and triterpenic alcohols composition of Carica papaya L. seed oils grown in a typical geographical location and Carica papaya L. seed oils grown in an untypical geographical location in greenhouse conditions (Saratov Region, Russia). The oils were extracted from the seeds of Carica papaya L. fruits collected in Kenya, the Dominican Republic, Angola, Ghana, and Brazil, as well as from the seeds of fruit plants grown in a similar environment (Russian Federation, Saratov). Parameters such as the oil yield, refractive index, peroxide value, iodine value, saponification value, and acid value of the extracted Carica papaya L. seed oils were determined. The qualitative and quantitative chemical compositions of the seed oils were determined by a combination of mass spectrometry and NMR spectroscopy. The profiles as well as the content of fatty acids, sterols, triterpenic alcohols, and benzyl isothiocyanate were established. The saponifiable fraction of the oils is mainly represented by triglycerides (98.7–99.4%), while di-(0.4–1.1%) and monoglycerides (0.1–0.3%) are also present but in smaller amounts. The content of sterols and triterpene alcohols was (537.5–918.2) mg/100 g of oil (0.54–0.92%), and up to 75% of the fraction was represented by β-sitosterol (55.9–66.7%) and its saturated analogue-sitostanol (11.0–15.7%). The physicochemical properties and the fatty acid, sterol, and triterpenic alcohol composition of seed oils from Carica papaya L. fruits, cultivated in Russia, is in the quantitative range of other samples, which suggests that Carica papaya L. can be grown in Russia for obtaining the seed oil.

The toxicity of local anesthetics is a serious problem, given their widespread use. One of the main causes of the side effects of local anesthetics is their non-selectivity of action in the body. A possible way to increase the selectivity of the action of drugs is to use the photopharmacology approach. Previously, we described the light-controlled local anesthetic ethercaine, the biological effect of which can be controlled using light, thereby increasing its selectivity of action. An important limitation of ethercaine was its low solubility in water, limiting the potential of this compound. In this work, we developed a dosage form of ethercaine, which allowed us to increase its solubility from 0.6% to 2% or more. The resulting 1% solution of ethercaine hydrochloride in 4% Kolliphor ELP had high biological activity on the surface anesthesia model, while demonstrating low acute toxicity in mice with intravenous administration (4–5 times less than that of lidocaine).

The prevalence of periodontal diseases is increasing, tends to increase with age and is considered as one of the main causes of tooth loss. To assess the effectiveness of new methods of treatment of periodontal diseases, studies on laboratory animals can be promising. The aim of the study: to develop a new method of accelerated modeling of experimental periodontitis on laboratory animals. Material and methods. The study was carried out on 22 female rats. A wire ligature was applied to the cervical area of the incisors of the animals in an eight-shaped manner. Plaque obtained from a patient with periodontitis was placed under the wire, and nicotine and ethyl alcohol solutions were injected under the gingival mucosa. A complex index has been proposed to assess inflammation. At the end of the experiment the animals were euthanized, their jaws were dissected into dentoalveolar blocks and further descriptive histologic analysis was performed. Results. On the second day the gingiva of the rats acquired a cyanotic-pink color, on the fourth day the consistency of the gingiva became friable, mobility appeared in the lower incisors. Complex index of inflammation in animals of the main group: before the study—9, on the 7th day—195. Gingival preparations showed signs of exudative inflammation. In alveolar processes—irreversible resorption of bone structures. The difference of indicators in animals before and after the experiment was statistically significant (p < 0.05). Conclusion. The new experimental model of periodontitis is reproduced in a short period of time, provides intensive development of inflammation, leads to disruption of the integrity of epithelial and connective tissue attachment, destruction of alveolar bone.

This study addresses the cervical part of the vertebral column. Clinical pictures of dystrophic diseases of the cervical part of the vertebral column do not always correspond only to the morphological changes—they may be represented by connective tissue formation and nerve and vessel compression. To find out the possible reason, this morphometric study of the cervical part of the vertebral column in 40 cadavers was performed. CT scans were performed on 17 cadaveric material specimens. A total of 12 histological samples of connective tissue structures located in intervertebral canals (IC) were studied. One such formation, an intracanal ligament (IL) located in the IC, was found. Today, there is no term “intervertebral canal”, nor is there a detailed description of the intervertebral canal in the cervical part of the vertebral column. Cervical intervertebral canals make up five pairs in segments C2–C7. On cadavers, the IC lateral and medial apertures were 0.9–1.5 cm and 0.5–0.9 cm, correspondingly. According to our histological study, the connective tissue structures in the IC are ligaments—IL. According to the presence of these ligaments, ICs were classified into three types. Complete regional anatomy characterization of the IC of the cervical part of the vertebral column with a description of its constituent anatomical elements was provided. The findings demonstrate the need to include the terms “intervertebral canal” and “intervertebral ligament” in the Terminologia anatomica.

Background: The complex traditional treatment of inflammation diseases in oral cavity includes the prescription of antibiotic and antiseptic therapy. This systematic review aims to evaluate the effect of photodynamic therapy as a part of management of inflammatory diseases in oral cavity; Methods: The study is presented in accordance with the preferred reporting points for systematic reviews and meta-analyses (PRISMA). This systematic review was conducted using electronic databases such as Medline PubMed, Scopus and the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials. All the studies in this systematic review, were randomized, the risk of bias 2 (ROB 2) were assessed; Results: Considering the inclusion and exclusion criteria, we included 10 randomized clinical trials, published up to 2023 investigating the application of photodynamic therapy as a part of management of inflammatory diseases in oral cavity. The diode laser was used in the oral cavity in the zone of inflammatory process (gingivitis, mucositis, periimplantitis, marginal periodontitis, abscess, periostitis, osteomyelitis etc.) in nine studies or in the zone before surgical procedures in one study; Conclusion: Based on the results of clinical studies, it can be stated that photodynamic therapy shows good results for operations performed in the oral cavity and pharynx.

The technological aspects of the light inorganic crystalline compounds suitable to create scintillation materials to detect charged particles and neutrons in a wide energy range have been examined. Among them, Li2CaSiO4:Eu was found to be a prospective candidate to control the valent state of the Rare Earth (RE) and to provide a high intensity of luminescence. It was demonstrated that the material has room for future improvement; however, this requires precise engineering of its composition—an experimental search of compositions or additives that will provide the maximum Eu2+/Eu3+ ratio to achieve a high scintillation light yield. The benefits of light inorganic materials are disclosed through the modeling of the linear density of nonequilibrium carriers along secondary particle tracks created in scintillators utilized for neutron detection. It is shown that oxide matrices have a larger linear density in comparison with halide crystalline compounds under alpha-particles and tritons, whereas light oxides can provide smaller numbers under protons.

Tightly focused 515-nm, 0.3-ps laser pulses modify in a laser filamentation regime the crystalline structure of an Ib-type high-pressure, high-temperature (HPHT) synthesized diamond in a thin-plate form. The modified microregions (micromarks) in the yellow and colorless crystal zones, possessing different concentrations of elementary substitutional nitrogen (N) impurity atoms (C-centers), exhibit their strongly diminished local IR absorption (upon correction to the thickness scaling factor). Simultaneously, local visible-range (400–550 nm) absorption coefficients were increased, and photoluminescence (PL) yield was strongly enhanced in the broad range of 450–800 nm. The strong yellow-red PL enhancement saturates with laser exposure, implying the complete conversion of C-centers into nitrogen-vacancy (NV0,−) ones due to the laser-induced generation of Frenkel “interstitial-vacancy” I–V carbon pairs. The other emerging blue-green (>470 nm) and green-yellow (>500 nm) PL bands were also simultaneously saturated versus the laser exposure. The observed IR/optical absorption and PL spectral changes enlighten the ultrashort pulse laser inscription of NV0−-based quantum-emitter centers in synthetic diamonds and enable the evaluation of the productivity of their inscription along with the corresponding I–V generation rates.

The growing demand for cheap, safe, recyclable, and environmentally friendly batteries highlights the importance of the development of organic electrode materials. Here, we present a novel redox-active polymer comprising a polyaniline-type conjugated backbone and quinizarin and anthraquinone units. The synthesized polymer was explored as a cathode material for batteries, and it delivered promising performance characteristics in both lithium and potassium cells. Excellent lithiation efficiency enabled high discharge capacity values of >400 mA g−1 in combination with good stability upon charge–discharge cycling. Similarly, the potassium cells with the polymer-based cathodes demonstrated a high discharge capacity of >200 mAh g−1 at 50 mA g−1 and impressive stability: no capacity deterioration was observed for over 3000 cycles at 11 A g−1, which was among the best results reported for K ion battery cathodes to date. The synthetic availability and low projected cost of the designed material paves a way to its practical implementation in scalable and inexpensive organic batteries, which are emerging as a sustainable energy storage technology.

The luminescent Z-scan technique with time resolution is applied to the study of the luminescence properties of CH3NH3PbBr3 single crystals representative of the family of hybrid organic–inorganic lead perovskites successfully applied recently in photovoltaics and currently investigated as potential nanosecond scintillators. The third harmonic of Ti-sapphire laser (λ = 266 nm) with a pulse duration of 26 fs and 1 kHz frequency was applied for the luminescence excitation creating the charge carriers with the estimated density from 1017 to 1021 cm−3 in the temperature range from 13 to 300 K. Temperature and excitation density dependence of the luminescence yield and kinetics is interpreted with the consideration of the temperature-dependent binding of electrons and holes into excitons, a saturation of defects responsible for the non-radiative relaxation channel competing with exciton creation; absorption saturation resulting in the increased penetration depth of the excitation radiation and hence the increased contribution of the re-absorption.

Two series of (Gd, Y, Yb)3Al2Ga3O12 quintuple compounds with a garnet structure and solely doped with Ce and Tb were prepared in the form of ceramics by sintering in oxygen at 1600 °C for two hours and studied for the interaction of activator ions with ytterbium ions entering the matrix. It was shown that the photoluminescence and scintillation of Ce3+ ions are completely suppressed, predominantly by tunneling ionization through the charge transfer state (CTS) of the Ce4+-Yb2+ ions. The photoluminescence of Tb3+ ions is quenched in the presence of ytterbium, but not completely due to the poor resonance conditions of Tb3+ intraconfiguration transitions and the CTS of the single Yb3+ and the CTS of Ce4+-Yb2+ ions. The scintillation in the visible range of both Ce3+- and Tb3+-doped samples is intensely quenched as well, which indicates strong competition from Yb3+ ions to activators in interaction with the Gd substrate.

The subject matter of the reported work refers to studying the interactions followed by the excited-state generation, which are chemical models of oxidative processes leading to a weak light emission emerging from living cells, and to explore the possibilities of using them as tools for evaluating the activity of oxygen-metabolism modulators, most prominently, natural bioantioxidants of biomedical value in particular. Methodologically, major attention is paid to analyzing the shapes of the time profiles of the light emission derived from a model sensory system in the presence of lipid samples of vegetable and animal (fish) origin rich in bioantioxidants. As a result, a modified reaction mechanism involving 12 elementary steps is proposed to rationalize the light-emission kinetics in the presence of natural bioantioxidants. We conclude that free radicals formed from bioantioxidants and their dimerization products contribute significantly to the general antiradical activity of lipid samples, which should be taken into account in developing efficient bioantioxidant assays for biomedical applications and while establishing the mechanisms of bioantioxidant effects on metabolic processes in vivo.

The development of sulfur-containing pharmaceutical compounds is important in the advancement of medicinal chemistry. Photosensitizers (PS) that acquire new properties upon incorporation of sulfur-containing groups or individual sulfur atoms into their structure are not neglected, either. In this work, a synthesis of sulfur-containing derivatives of natural chlorophyll a using Lawesson’s reagent was optimized. Thiocarbonyl chlorins were shown to have a significant bathochromic shift in the absorption and fluorescence bands. The feasibility of functionalizing the thiocarbonyl group at the macrocycle periphery by formation of a Pt(II) metal complex in the chemotherapeutic agent cisplatin was shown. The chemical stability of the resulting conjugate in aqueous solution was studied, and it was found to possess a high cytotoxic activity against sarcoma S37 tumor cells that results from the combined photodynamic and chemotherapeutic effect on these cells.

During the last few years, in the territory of the Russian Federation, the number of cases of toxic phosphoric osteonecrosis of the jaws has increased against the background of taking drugs of “artisanal” production (pervitin, desomorphin). The aim of our study was to increase the effectiveness of surgical treatment of patients with a diagnosis of toxic phosphorus necrosis of the maxilla. We performed a comprehensive treatment of patients with a history of drug addiction and the above diagnosis. Surgical intervention in the volume of complete resection of pathologically altered tissues and reconstructive techniques using local tissues and a replaced flap made it possible to achieve good aesthetic and functional results in the early and late postoperative period. Thus, our proposed method of surgical treatment can be used in similar clinical situations.

GYAGG:Tb (Ce) scintillators have been confirmed to be promising sources of light emission when excited by an intense 150 keV electron beam. The saturation of the scintillation yield under such excitation conditions has been studied. To explain the results obtained, a model that considers the Auger quenching mechanism was used. The Ce-doped material did not show saturation, whereas a moderate 30% drop of the yield was measured in the Tb-doped sample at the highest excitation beam intensity ~1 A/cm2. This put forward a way to exploit the Tb-doped scintillator for indirect β-voltaic batteries.

In surgical dentistry, suture material is the only foreign body that remains in the tissues after surgery, and it can lead to several negative reactions, for example, infection of the wound. The purpose of this study was to compare the mechanical properties and microbiological resistance of mono- and polyfilament suture materials used in tooth extraction operations. The study of elongation and knot force was carried out on an Instron 5969 Dual Column Testing System device. The capillarity of the materials was studied on a setup assembled by the authors manually by immersing the ends of the filaments in a colored manganese solution. A microbiological study was carried out on the threads taken for the experiment immediately after wound suturing, and on day 7, at which time they were removed. The comparison was made according to Rothia mucilaginosa, Streptococcus sanguinis, Staphylococcus epidermidis. Results: monofilament suture materials (Prolene and Glycolon), after calculating the Kruskal–Wallis and Mann–Whitney indices, showed better performance in all experiments compared to polyfilament sutures (Vicryl and PGA). In capillarity comparison, there was a significant difference between groups (p = 0.00018). According to the sum of the results of three microbiological studies on day 7, monofilament suture materials absorbed less of the studied bacteria on their surface compared to the polyfilament ones (p < 0.05). Conclusions: Of the studied suture materials, Prolene had the best microbiological resistance and good mechanical properties.

The decay kinetics of Gd3Al2Ga3O12:Ce3+ single crystal luminescence were studied under dense laser excitation. It was shown that the decay times as well as the intensity of Ce3+ luminescence depend on the excitation density. The observed effects were ascribed to the interaction between excitons as well as to the features of energy transfer from the excitons to Ce3+. The numerical simulation of the experimental results was performed for justification of the proposed model.

Polynaphthoylenebenzimidazoles containing functional sulfo groups were synthesized by a one-step method in a sulfuric acid medium with oleum. A polymer-analogous transformation of these polymers with aqueous solutions of metal salts (K, Ca, and Cr) was carried out. Their chemical structure was characterized by FTIR, NMR, and elemental analysis. Polymer salt coatings were deposited on QCM sensor surfaces by electron beam-induced vacuum deposition. The morphology of the coatings was characterized by AFM. It was shown that the coatings formed from a series of polymer salts have different adsorption activity in acetaminophen–water solution compared to distilled water. The QCM results indicate that sensor signal correlates with polymer coating thickness, morphology, and its chemical composition.

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is currently regarded as a promising method for the treatment of oncological diseases. However, it involves a number of limitations related to the specific features of the method and the specific characteristics of photosensitizer molecules, including tumor hypoxia, small depth of light penetration into the tumor tissue, and low accumulation sensitivity. These drawbacks can be overcome by combining PDT with other treatment methods, for example, chemotherapy. In this work, we were the first to obtain agents that contain bacteriopurpurinimide as a photodynamic subunit and complexes of gold(I) that implement the chemotherapy effect. To bind the latter agents, N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHC) based on histidine and histamine were obtained. We considered alternative techniques for synthesizing the target conjugates and selected an optimal one that enabled the production of preparative amounts for biological assays. In vitro studies showed that all the compounds obtained exhibited high photoinduced activity. The C-donor Au(I) complexes exhibited the maximum specific activity at longer incubation times compared to the other derivatives, both under exposure to light and without irradiation. In in vivo studies, the presence of histamine in the NHC-derivative of dipropoxy-BPI (7b) had no significant effect on its antitumor action, whereas the Au(I) metal complex of histamine NHC-derivative with BPI (8b) resulted in enhanced antitumor activity and in an increased number of remissions after photodynamic treatment.

A method for the preparation of polydimethylsiloxanes with grafted methoxy-substituted dibenzoylmethanatoboron difluoride has been described. The structures of prepared polymers were confirmed using NMR, IR spectroscopy and gel permeation chromatography methods. Their thermal properties were investigated using thermal gravimetric analysis, differential scanning calorimetry and thermomechanical analysis. The prepared polymers had good thermal (Td5% up to 393 °C) and thermo-oxidative (Td5% = 413 °C) stability. The polymers started to transit in a viscous flow state at about 40 °C (for 3 a) and at about 20 °C (for 3 b). The viscoelastic characteristics of prepared polymers were determined in the sinusoidal oscillating vibrations mode. It was shown that the studied polymers at low frequencies at room temperature are viscoelastic fluids (G′ < G″). Increasing the frequency led to inversion (crossover) of dependences G′ and G″, which indicated the transition of polymers from viscous to elastomeric behavior characteristics, and the beginning of the formation of a physical network. Optical properties were studied using electron absorption, steady-state and time-resolved fluorescence spectroscopy. It was shown that intramolecular H-dimers exist in the ground state. The polymers studied had a bright fluorescence in the solution and in the solid state, consisting of bands of monomer and excimer emission. Thermally-activated delayed fluorescence was observed in the solution and the solid state. The prepared polymers possess intriguing properties that make them useful as optical materials, sensors or imaging agents.

The structural and luminescence properties of undoped Y1−xScxPO4 solid solutions have been studied. An intense thermally stable emission with fast decay (τ1/e ~ 10−7 s) and a band position varying from 5.21 to 5.94 eV depending on the Sc/Y ratio is detected and ascribed to the 2p O-3d Sc self-trapped excitons. The quantum yield of the UV-C emission, also depending on the Sc/Y ratio, reaches 34% for the solid solution with x = 0.5 at 300 K. It is shown by a combined analysis of theoretical and experimental data that the formation of Sc clusters occurs in the solid solutions studied. The clusters facilitate the creation of energy wells at the conduction band bottom, which enables deep localization of electronic excitations and the creation of luminescence centers characterized by high quantum yield and thermal stability of the UV-C emission.

A series of multiblock polyurethane-ureas (PUU) based on polycaprolactone diol (PCL) with a molecular mass of 530 or 2000 g/mol, as well as hard segments of different lengths and structures, were synthesized by the step-growth polymerization method. The chemical structure of the synthesized multiblock copolymers was confirmed by IR- and NMR-spectroscopy. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) were used to determine the relaxation and phase transition temperatures for the entire series of the obtained PUU. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) method made it possible to identify PUU compositions in which the crystallizability of soft segments (SS) is manifested due to their sufficient length for self-organization and structuring. Visualization of the crystal structure and disordering of the stacking of SS with an increase in their molecular mobility during heating are shown using optical microscopy. The change in the size of the hard phase domains and the value of the interdomain distance depending on the PCL molecular mass, as well as the length and structure of the hard block in the synthesized PUU, were analyzed using small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) and small-angle neutron scattering (SANS). The evolution of the domain structure upon passing through the melting and crystallization temperatures of PUU soft blocks was studied using SANS. The studies carried out made it possible to reveal the main correlations between the chemical structure of the synthesized PUU and their supramolecular organization as well as thermal and mechanical properties.

Cellulose HogC was produced by the modified traditional method with 35% yield from the stem of Sosnovsky hogweed and was characterized by elemental analysis, infrared (IR) spectroscopy, powder X-ray diffractometry, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). For HogC, the degree of crystallinity (approximately 70%) and the glass transition temperature (105–108 °C) were determined. It was found that the whiteness characteristic in the case of HogC was 92% and this significate was obtained without a bleaching procedure using chlorine-containing reagents. In this paper, the possibility of hydrophobization of HogC films by treatment with radiation-synthesized telomers of tetrafluoroethylene is shown. It was found that the contact angle of the telomer-treated cellulose film surface depended on the properties of the telomers (the chemical nature of the solvent, and the initial concentration of tetrafluoroethylene) and could reach 140 degrees.

Technological factors and processes contributing to the scintillation mechanism have been considered in quaternary garnet ceramics doped with Ce(Gd,Lu)3Al2Ga3O12. The super-stoichiometric additive of gadolinium in the material composition or its co-doping with a low concentration of Mg were found to be effective tools to suppress phosphorescence in the quaternary garnet, confirming that it is not an intrinsic property of the material. The Monte-Carlo simulation of electronic excitation transfer demonstrates that the hopping migration along the gadolinium sublattice plays an essential role in forming the scintillation kinetic parameters. Breaking the integrity of the gadolinium sublattice by substitution with heavier lutetium ions increases the role of self-trapped states in the excitation of Ce3+ ions, which ensures both an increase in the fraction of short ~20 ns and very long ~600 ns components in the scintillation kinetics.

Background: Providing regional anesthesia skills shaping remains relevant nowadays. A number of studies show that dentists have difficulties with these working independently. The study aim is the comparative analysis of the results of mandibular anesthesia (IANB) manual-skills shaping among dentists on plastic models and cadavers. Methods: In total, 999 participants were training in the skills of mandibular anesthesia from 2017 to 2021. The participants were divided in a random way into two groups: 700 participants were trained on plastic models, and 299 were trained on the cadaver material. After a lecture on the clinical and anatomical guidelines for IANB, a demonstration of the technique was provided, with subsequent testing of the injection technique. Satisfaction with the aspects of the training was assessed using the Likert scale. Results: the analysis of average values showed that participants from the group in which the manual skills were practiced on cadavers were more satisfied with the main aspects of the training, according to the sum of the main criteria of the modified scale. Conclusions: The important advantages of cadaver educational technology are that the sensations of tissue resistance are identical to natural ones, the individuality of each object, and the possibility of the visual study of the anesthesia technique, by dissection of the needle course and the location of the anesthetic depot.

Nowadays, luminescent materials attract wide attention due to their valuable characteristics and broad area of potential application. Luminescent silicone-based polymers possess unique properties, such as flexibility, hydrophobicity, thermal and chemical stabilities, etc., which allow them to be utilized in various fields, such as optoelectronics, solid-state lasers, luminescent solar concentrators, sensors, and others. In the present work, a metal-ligand interaction approach was applied to obtain new cross-linked luminescent polymers based on multiligand polysiloxanes with grafted β-diketone fragments and organoeuropiumsiloxanes containing various organic substituents. Organoeuropiumsiloxanes were utilized as a source of Eu3+ ions due to their compatibility with the silicon matrix. All synthesized polymers were fully characterized and their physicochemical, mechanical, self-healing, optical, and thermal properties were studied.

Pain is a common symptom that impairs the quality of life for people around the world. Local anesthetics widely used for pain relief have a number of side effects, which makes the development of both new drugs and new ways to control their activity particularly important. Photopharmacology makes it possible to reduce the side effects of an anesthetic and control its biological activity in the body. The purpose of this work was to create a new light-controlled local anesthetic and study its biological activity in animals. A compound with a simple scheme of synthesis was chosen to shift the UV-Vis absorption band towards the visible range of the spectrum and was synthesized for the first time. Some computer calculations were performed to make sure that the aforementioned changes would not lead to loss of biological activity. The micellar form of the new compound was prepared, and in vivo biological studies were carried out in rabbits. The existence of a local anesthetic effect, which disappeared almost completely on irradiation with light (λ = 395 nm), was shown using the surface anesthesia model. Moreover, the possibility of multiple reversible changes in the biological activity of ethercaine under the action of light was demonstrated. The latter compound manifests no local irritating effect, either. The data obtained indicate the prospects for the development of new compounds based on azobenzene for light-controlled local anesthesia.

New multiarm stars have been synthesized based on polylithium derivatives of high-generation carbosilane dendrimers. In the synthesis of multiarm stars based on the eighth-generation dendrimer, steric hindrances were observed even during the synthesis of a polylithium initiator. Subsequently, this led to chain transfer reactions between growing arms, as well as other side effects. As a result, dense nanogel formations with a higher tendency of ordering than in classical objects of this type were isolated from the reaction mixture. The study of the rheology of multiarm stars based on sixth-generation dendrimers made it possible to determine the activation energies of viscous flow in these objects, which makes it possible to consider them as objects with a macromolecular nature and a reptation flow mechanism.

Orthodontic implants have been developed for the implementation of skeletal anchorage and are effectively used in the design of individual orthodontic devices. However, despite a significant amount of clinical research, the biomechanical aspects of the use of skeletal anchorage have not been adequately studied. The aim of this work was to numerically investigate the stress–strain state of the developed palatal orthodontic device supported by mini-implants. Four possible options for the placement of mini-implants in the bone were analyzed. The effect of a chewing load of 100 N on the bite plane was investigated. The study was carried out using biomechanical modeling based on the finite element method. The installation of the palatal orthodontic device fixed on mini-implants with an individual bite plane positioned on was simulated. The dependence of equivalent stresses and deformation changes on the number and location of the supporting mini-implants of the palatal orthodontic device was investigated. Two materials (titanium alloy and stainless steel) of the palatal orthodontic device were also investigated. The choice of a successful treatment option was based on the developed biomechanical criteria for assessing the surgical treatment success. Application of the criteria made it possible to estimate the stability and strength of fixation of each of the considered mini-implants installation options. As a result, options for the mini-implants optimal placement were identified (the first and the fourth which provide distributed front and side support of the device), as well as the preferred material (titanium alloy) for the manufacture of the palatal orthodontic device.

New non-crystallizable low-dispersity star-shaped polydimethylsiloxanes (PDMS) containing stereoregular cis-tetra(organo)(dimethylsiloxy)cyclotetrasiloxanes containing methyl-, tolyl- and phenyl-substituents at silicon atoms and the mixture of four stereoisomers of tetra[phenyl(dimethylsiloxy)]cyclotetrasiloxane as the cores were synthesized. Their thermal and viscous properties were studied. All synthesized compounds were characterized by a complex of physicochemical analysis methods: nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), FT-IR spectroscopy, gel permeation chromatography (GPC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), viscometry in solution, rheometry, and Langmuir trough study.

In this work, we obtained the first selenium-containing chlorin with a chalcogen atom in exlocycle E. It was shown that the spectral properties were preserved in the target compound and the stability increased at two different pH values, in comparison with the starting purpurin-18. The derivatives have sufficiently high fluorescence and singlet oxygen quantum yields. The photoinduced cytotoxicity of sulfur- and selenium-anhydrides of chlorin p6 studied for the first time in vitro on the S37 cell line was found to be two times higher that of purpurin-18 and purpurinimide studied previously. Moreover, the dark cytotoxicity increased four-fold in comparison with the latter compounds. Apparently, the increase in the dark cytotoxicity is due to the interaction of the pigments studied with sulfur- and selenium-containing endogenous intracellular compounds. Intracellular distributions of thioanhydride and selenoanhydride chlorin p6 in S37 cells were shown in cytoplasm by diffusion distribution. The intracellular concentration of the sulfur derivative turned out to be higher and, as a consequence, its photoinduced cytotoxicity was higher as well.

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is currently one of the most promising methods of cancer treatment. However, this method has some limitations, including a small depth of penetration into biological tissues, the low selectivity of accumulation, and hypoxia of the tumor tissues. These disadvantages can be overcome by combining PDT with other methods of treatment, such as radiation therapy, neutron capture therapy, chemotherapy, etc. In this work, potential drugs were obtained for the first time, the molecules of which contain both photodynamic and chemotherapeutic pharmacophores. A derivative of natural bacteriochlorophyll a with a tin IV complex, which has chemotherapeutic activity, acts as an agent for PDT. This work presents an original method for obtaining agents of combined action, the structure of which is confirmed by various physicochemical methods of analysis. The method of molecular modeling was used to investigate the binding of the proposed drugs to DNA. In vitro biological tests were carried out on several lines of tumor cells: Hela, A549, S37, MCF7, and PC-3. It was shown that the proposed conjugates of binary action for some cell lines had a dark cytotoxicity that was significantly higher (8–10 times) than the corresponding metal complexes of amino acids, which was explained by the targeted chemotherapeutic action of the tin (IV) complex due to chlorin. The greatest increase in efficiency relative to the initial dipropoxy-BPI was found for the conjugate with lysine as a chelator of the tin cation relative to cell lines, with the following results: S-37 increased 3-fold, MCF-7 3-fold, and Hela 2.4-fold. The intracellular distribution of the obtained agents was also studied by confocal microscopy and showed a diffuse granular distribution with predominant accumulation in the near nuclear region.

To combine the neutron-capturing and photodynamic properties of boron nanoclusters and derivatives of natural chlorins, respectively, in one molecule, conjugate of chlorin e6 methyl ester with cyclen and dioxane and nitrile derivatives of cobalt bis(dicarbollide) were synthesized. The conditions for the purification of compounds by HPLC were selected since the work with natural compounds is complicated by the production of closely related impurities.

The rapid growth of drug-resistant bacteria all over the world has given rise to a major research challenge, namely a search for alternative treatments to which bacteria will be unable to develop resistance. Photodynamic therapy is an approach of this kind. It involves the use of photosensitizers in combination with visible light at a certain wavelength to excite the former and generate reactive oxygen species. Various synthetic heterocyclic compounds are used as photosensitizers. Of these, derivatives of natural chlorophylls have a special place due to their properties. This review deals with the use of such compounds in antimicrobial PDT.

A series of carbosilane dendrimers of the 4th, 6th, and 7th generations with a terminal trimethylsilylsiloxane layer was synthesized. Theoretical models of these dendrimers were developed, and equilibrium dendrimer conformations obtained via molecular dynamics simulations were in a good agreement with experimental small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) data demonstrating molecule monodispersity and an almost spherical shape. It was confirmed that the glass transition temperature is independent of the dendrimer generation, but is greatly affected by the chemical nature of the dendrimer terminal groups. A sharp increase in the zero-shear viscosity of dendrimer melts was found between the 5th and the 7th dendrimer generations, which was qualitatively identical to that previously reported for polycarbosilane dendrimers with butyl terminal groups. The viscoelastic properties of high-generation dendrimers seem to follow some general trends with an increase in the generation number, which are determined by the regular branching structure of dendrimers.

In this work, we consider a mathematical model and finite element implementation of heat transfer and mechanics of soils with phase change. We present the construction of the simplified mathematical model based on the definition of water and ice fraction volumes as functions of temperature. In the presented mathematical model, the soil deformations occur due to the porosity growth followed by the difference between ice and water density. We consider a finite element discretization of the presented thermoelastic model with implicit time approximation. Implementation of the presented basic mathematical model is performed using FEniCS finite element library and openly available to download. The results of the numerical investigation are presented for the two-dimensional and three-dimensional model problems for two test cases in three different geometries. We consider algorithms with linearization from the previous time layer (one Picard iteration) and the Picard iterative method. Computational time is presented with the total number of nonlinear iterations. A numerical investigation with results of the convergence of the nonlinear iteration is presented for different time step sizes, where we calculate relative errors for temperature and displacements between current solution and reference solution with the largest number of the time layers. Numerical results illustrate the influence of the porosity change due to the phase-change of pore water into ice on the deformation of the soils. We observed a good numerical convergence of the presented implementation with the small number of nonlinear iterations, that depends on time step size.

Ballas diamond is a rare form of the polycrystalline radial aggregate of diamonds with diverse internal structures. The morphological features of ballas diamonds have experienced repeated revision. The need that this paper presents for development of a crystal-genetic classification was determined by a rich variety of combined and transitional forms of ballas-like diamonds, which include aggregates, crystals, and intergrowths. The new crystal-genetic classification combines already-known and new morphological types of ballas as well as ballas-like diamonds discovered in the placers of Yakutia, the Urals, and Brazil. The ballas-like diamond forms include spherocrystals, aggregates with a single crystal core, split crystals, radial multiple twin intergrowths, and globular crystals. The crystal genetic scheme of the evolution of ballas and ballas-like diamonds is a sequence of the morphological types arranged in accordance with the conventional model of the dependence of the mechanism and diamond growth from carbon supersaturation developed by I. Sunagawa. The evolution of the growth forms of ballas and ballas-like diamonds was tracked based on the macrozonal structure of diamonds varying from a flat-faced octahedron to a fibrous cuboid with its transition forms to the radiating crystal aggregates. The morphological diversity of the ballas-like diamonds depends on the level of supersaturation, and abrupt changes of the level of supersaturation engender abrupt changes in a mechanism of crystal growth. The change in the rate of growth under the influence of adsorption and absorption of the mechanic impurities accompanied the sudden appearance of the autodeformation defects in the form of splitting and multiple radial twinning of crystals. The spherical shape of Yakutia ballas-like diamonds is due to the volumetric dissolution that results in the curved-face crystals of the “Urals” or “Brazilian” type associated with ballas diamonds in placers.

In this work, we consider the heat transfer problems with phase change. The mathematical model is described through a two-phase Stefan problem and defined in the whole domain that contains frozen and thawed subdomains. For the numerical solution of the problem, we present three schemes based on different smoothing of the sharp phase change interface. We propose the method using smooth coefficient approximation based on the analytical smoothing of discontinuous coefficients through an error function with a given smoothing interval. The second method is based on smoothing in one spatial interval (cell) and provides a minimal length of smoothing calculated automatically for the given values of temperatures on the mesh. The third scheme is a convenient scheme using a linear approximation of the coefficient on the smoothing interval. The results of the numerical computations on a model problem with an exact solution are presented for the one-dimensional formulation. The extension of the method is presented for the solution of the two-dimensional problem with numerical results.

Characteristic dimensions and evolution times of regions of secondary electronic excitations created by the interaction of ionizing radiation with matter cannot be measured directly. At the same time these are essential parameters both for engineering of nanostructured composite materials defining optimal layer thickness and nanoparticles radii and for the development of optimized scintillators. The paper demonstrates how such spatial and temporal data can be extracted from luminescence decay kinetics excited by vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) and X-ray photons at modern sources of synchrotron radiation MAX IV and PETRA III. Specific features of energy-band structure of self-activated crystal CeF3 are discussed, and its potential for a super-fast detection of ionizing radiation evaluated. Diffusion-controlled dipole–dipole interaction of Frenkel excitons is demonstrated to account well for the luminescence non-exponential decay kinetics providing information on the scales of excited regions created by photons of different energy. For 20 eV photons the radius of excited regions is estimated to be 10 nm, and for 200 eV photons it increases to 18 nm. Effective radius of excited regions of complicated shape created by 19 keV is as large as 80 nm and the diffusion length of Frenkel excitons over radiative time is 14 nm.

Complexes [(dpp-BIAN)0CoIII2]·MeCN (I) and [(Py)2CoI2] (II) were synthesized by the reaction between cobalt(II) iodide and 1,2-bis(2,6-diisopropylphenylimino)acenaphthene (dpp-BIAN) or pyridine (Py), respectively. The molecular structures of the complexes were determined by X-ray diffraction. The Co(II) ions in both compounds are in a distorted tetrahedral environment (CoN2I2). The electrochemical behavior of complex I was studied by cyclic voltammetry. Magnetochemical measurements revealed that when an external magnetic field is applied, both compounds exhibit the properties of field-induced single ion magnets.

Gas and oil pipelines for the Arctic region must sustain low temperatures and high internal pressures of a corrosive active medium. Generation of new steel compositions for oil and gas pipelines is an urgent issue in order to ensure their high reliability. Low-carbon steels with a ferritic–pearlitic structure are normally used in pipe production, but they are unable to cope with increased market demands. The main objective of this study is to investigate the influence of the cooling rate on the structure and morphological characteristics of bainite, which determines the exploitation properties of the pipe steels. Dilatometric tests were carried out using a Gleeble 3500 complex. Optical microscope and scanning electron microscope analysis, with the computer image analysis system Thixomet PRO, were used to study the microstructure of steel. Hardness was measured in accordance with ASTM E-384. Morphological characteristics of bainite components that were formed at various cooling rates from 0.05 to 100 °C/s were defined. The novel result of this study is the continuous cooling transformation diagram of undercooled austenite of the steel containing 0.062% C; 1.80% Mn; 0.120% Mo; 0.032% Cr, 0.90% Ni and other elements (Al, Cu, V, Nb, Ti).

A series of ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylenes with viscosity-average molecular weights in the range of 1.6⁻5.6 × 106 have been prepared by using a novel Ziegler⁻Natta-type catalytic system—TiCl4/2,2′-dimethoxy-1,1′-binaphthalene/Et3Al2Cl3/Bu2Mg at different temperatures (Tpoly) in the range between 10 and 70 °C in toluene. The morphology of the nascent reactor powders has been studied by scanning electron microscopy, wide-angle X-ray diffraction, and the DSC melting behavior. Polymers are suitable for the modern processing methods—the solvent-free solid-state formation of super high-strength (tensile strength over 1.8⁻2.5 GPa) and high-modulus (elastic modulus up to 136 GPa) oriented film tapes. With decrease of Tpoly, the drawability of the reactor powders increased significantly.

Urea (URE) and guanidine hydrochloride (GHC) possessing strong chaotropic properties in aqueous media were added to DMSO solutions of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) to be gelled via freeze–thaw processing. Unexpectedly, it turned out that in the case of the PVA cryotropic gel formation in DMSO medium, the URE and GHC additives caused the opposite effects to those observed in water, i.e., the formation of the PVA cryogels (PVACGs) was strengthened rather than inhibited. Our studies of this phenomenon showed that such “kosmotropic-like” effects were more pronounced for the PVACGs that were formed in DMSO in the presence of URE additives, with the effects being concentration-dependent. The additives also caused significant changes in the macroporous morphology of the cryogels; the commonly observed trend was a decrease in the structural regularity of the additive-containing samples compared to the additive-free gel sample. The viscosity measurements revealed consistent changes in the intrinsic viscosity, Huggins constant, and the excess activation heat of the viscosity caused by the additives. The results obtained evidently point to the urea-induced decrease in the solvation ability of DMSO with respect to PVA. As a result, this effect can be the key factor that is responsible for strengthening the structure formation upon the freeze–thaw gelation of this polymer in DMSO additionally containing additives such as urea, which is capable of competing with PVA for the solvent.

Catalytic systems containing TiCl4 or TiCl3, THF, organomagnesium (n-Bu2Mg) and organoaluminum compounds capable of producing ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) were developed. The resulting polymers were characterized by a molecular weight in the range of (1.8–7.8) × 106 Da and desirable morphology, suitable for modern methods of polymer processing—the solvent-free solid-state processing of superhigh-strength (tensile strength up to 2.1 GPa) and high-modulus (elastic modulus up to 125 GPa) oriented films and film tapes. The impacts of a THF additive, the oxidation state of the titanium atom, and the composition and nature of the nontransition organometallic compounds on the formation of catalytic systems for UHMWPE production were evaluated. The results indicate the suitability of individual titanium chloride tetrahydrofuran complex application for the formation of THF-containing catalytic systems. This approach also results in a significant increase in the system catalytic activity and mechanical properties of UHMWPE. The catalysts based on Ti(III) were inferior to systems containing Ti(IV) in productivity but were markedly superior in the mechanical properties of UHMWPE.
