This study investigates the temporal trends and correlations between Saharan dust mass concentration densities (DMCD) and Sargassum concentrations (SCT) in the tropical North Atlantic. Average DMCD data for June, July, and August from 1980 to 2022, alongside SCT data for the same months from 2012 to 2022, were analyzed using Mann–Kendall tests for trends and lagged regression models to assess whether higher Saharan dust levels correlate with Sargassum outbreaks in the region. A comprehensive analysis reveals a significant upward trend in Saharan dust quantities over the study period, with the summer months of June, July, and August exhibiting consistent increases. Notably, 2018 and 2020 recorded the highest mean DMCD levels, with June showing the most significant increasing trend, peaking in 2019. These findings are consistent with previous studies indicating a continuous elevation in Saharan dust concentrations in the tropical atmosphere of the North Atlantic. Simultaneously, Sargassum concentrations also show a notable increasing trend, particularly in 2018, which experienced both peak SCT and elevated DMCD levels. Mann–Kendall tests confirm statistically significant upward trends in both Saharan dust and Sargassum concentrations. Simple linear regression and lagged regression analyses reveal positive correlations between DMCD and SCT, highlighting a temporal component with stronger associations observed in July and the overall June–July–August (JJA) period. These results underscore the potential contribution of elevated Saharan dust concentrations to the recent surge in Sargassum outbreaks in the tropical North Atlantic. Furthermore, the results from forward stepwise regression (FSR) models indicate that DMCD and chlorophyll (CHLO) are the most critical predictors of SCT for the summer months, while sea surface temperature (SST) was not a significant predictor. These findings emphasize the importance of monitoring Saharan dust and chlorophyll trends in the Eastern Caribbean, as both factors are essential for improving Sargassum modeling and prediction in the region. This study provides valuable insights into the climatic factors influencing marine ecosystems and highlights the need for integrated environmental monitoring to manage the impacts on coastal economies.

Leydig cells (LCs) in the testes produce the male sex hormone testosterone (T). Several xenobiotics, including clinical drugs, supplements, and environmental chemicals, are known to disrupt T homeostasis. Notably, some of these xenobiotics are known to activate the pregnane X receptor (PXR), a ligand-dependent nuclear receptor. However, it is currently unknown whether PXR is expressed in LCs and whether PXR activation alters T synthesis in rodent LCs. Therefore, in this study, we sought to determine whether PXR is expressed in rodent LCs and whether pregnenolone 16-alpha carbonitrile (PCN), the prototype agonist of rodent PXR, regulates T biosynthesis in rodent LCs. Hormonal as well as protein and gene expression analyses were conducted in rat primary LCs and MA-10 mouse Leydig cells. Results showed that PXR was expressed at the mRNA and protein level in both rat primary LCs and MA-10 cells. Incubation of rat primary LCs with PCN resulted in a significant decrease in T secretion. This PCN-induced decrease in T secretion was associated with decreased protein expression of key steroidogenic enzymes such as 3β-HSD and CYP17A1. RNA-seq results from MA-10 cells showed that PCN down-regulated the transcripts of steroidogenic enzymes and proteins involved in the T synthesis pathway. Together, these results suggest that PCN, an agonist of rodent PXR, can regulate T biosynthesis in rodent LCs by down-regulating the expression of the steroidogenic enzymes involved in T biosynthesis. Our results are significant as they provide a potential novel mechanism for disruption of testosterone homeostasis by a variety of xenobiotics.

This study investigated the 7-day recovery period post-soccer matches in elite male academy players. We analyzed changes in physical performance, stretch-shortening cycle capability, landing mechanics, muscle damage, and perceived well-being while also considering the influence of players’ maturity status, chronological age, and physical demands on post-match responses. In a prospective, observational, mixed longitudinal study design, twenty-six players (U14 = 14 [age = 13.9 ± 0.2 y, and U16 = 12 [age = 15.1 ± 0.2 y]) undertook testing at baseline (1 h pre-match), immediately post-match (0 h), and 48-, 72-, 96-, and 120 h post-match for measures in creatine kinase (CK), urea (UR), CMJ height, 20 m sprint time, reactive strength index (RSI), leg stiffness (LS), landing mechanics, and perceived well-being. Players were also tested pre [168-h] and post the subsequent match. Results showed significant alterations 0 h post-match in CK (+71.3%), UR (+12.8%), CMJ height (−5.3%), 20 m sprint time (+3.8%), RSI (−9.6%), LS (−11.5%), and perceived well-being (−7.7%), with landing mechanics being unaffected. All parameters returned to baseline at 48 h, except for CK and UR, which remained elevated until 168 h. The players’ initial scores influenced how they responded after the match during the week. In conclusion, coaches should focus on post-match strategies to enhance muscle recovery, especially for youth players with a lower training status, given the extended recovery period observed for muscle damage markers.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of a mobile app designed to improve chronic disease self-management in patients aged 40 years and older with low health literacy and who had at least one chronic health condition, and to assess the impact of delivering information at different levels of reading difficulty. A randomized controlled trial was completed at two sites. Individuals aged 40 years and older screened for low health literacy who had at least one chronic health condition were randomly assigned to a tailored information multimedia app with text at one of three grade levels. Four primary outcomes were assessed: patient activation, chronic disease self-efficacy, health-related quality of life, and medication adherence. All groups showed overall increases in activation, self-efficacy, and health-related quality of life, but no change in medication adherence. No between-group differences were observed. The mobile app may have been effective in increasing participants’ levels of several psychosocial variables, but this interpretation can only be advanced tentatively in light of the lack of control-experimental group differences. Reading difficulty level was not significantly related to outcomes.

Beyond the challenges presented by obesity itself, a considerable portion of the population encounters prejudice and discriminatory behavior based on their weight and size. This phenomenon, termed weight stigma and weight bias, appears to be perpetuated not only by the broader society but also by healthcare providers, leading to distrust and alienation among individuals with obesity, thereby exacerbating a global issue. Recognizing weight stigma as a violation of human rights and its association with declining health outcomes, there is a pressing need to explore evidence-based strategies for mitigating it within healthcare. This is especially crucial at the early stages of professional development. Methodology: A randomized controlled trial employing a 60 min lecture experimental design was conducted to evaluate changes in conceptions, beliefs, and prejudices toward obesity among healthcare undergraduates (n = 242). Results: Semantic network analysis revealed participants’ conceptualization of obesity as a condition closely linked to diet and sedentary habits. Moreover, three out of four healthcare students considered obesity a disease for which the individual is responsible. While individuals with obesity were described as weak, lazy, and having a high affinity for food, these prejudices decreased following the educational intervention. Conclusion: Following an educational intervention based on the multifactorial nature of obesity and weight stigma, it was possible to modify prejudices and conceptions about obesity among future healthcare professionals.

Escherichia coli phytase (AppA) is widely used as an exogenous enzyme in monogastric animal feed mainly because of its ability to degrade phytic acid or its salt (phytate), a natural source of phosphorus. Currently, successful recombinant production of soluble AppA has been achieved by gene overexpression using both bacterial and yeast systems. However, some methods for the biomembrane immobilization of phytases (including AppA), such as surface display on yeast cells and bacterial spores, have been investigated to avoid expensive enzyme purification processes. This study explored a homologous protein production approach for displaying AppA on the cell surface of E. coli by engineering its outer membrane (OM) for extracellular expression. Sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis analysis of total bacterial lysates and immunofluorescence microscopy of non-permeabilized cells revealed protein expression, whereas activity assays using whole cells or OM fractions indicated functional enzyme display, as evidenced by consistent hydrolytic rates on typical substrates (i.e., p-nitrophenyl phosphate and phytic acid). Furthermore, the in vitro results obtained using a simple method to simulate the gastrointestinal tract of poultry suggest that the whole-cell biocatalyst has potential as a feed additive. Overall, our findings support the notion that biomembrane-immobilized enzymes are reliable for the hydrolysis of poorly digestible substrates relevant to animal nutrition.

Background: In 2022, suicide was the second leading cause of external death in Spain (the first among young people aged 15–29 years). This study aims to analyze the presence of myths among emergency first responders and identify the most prevalent false beliefs among them. Methods: The research is a observational and descriptive study carried out using a questionnaire composed of a total of 25 myths, with the response options being true or false. A total of 543 professionals took part in the study. All of them could intervene before, during, and after a suicide attempt. Results: The main finding of the study is that more than 50% of the participants accept as true the statement "There are more serious and less serious problems", underlining the idea that caring for patients could be related to the importance the health professional gives to the patients’ problem. Myths such as “The suicidal person wants to die” and “The suicidal person is determined to die” are also evident. Conclusion: The subjective thought the first responder has about suicide could affect their acts, and there is a need to train first responders in suicidal behavior to be able to create an adequate approach.

Insulin receptor substrates 1 and 2 (IRS-1 and IRS-2) are signaling adaptor proteins that participate in canonical pathways, where insulin cascade activation occurs, as well as in non-canonical pathways, in which phosphorylation of substrates is carried out by a diverse array of receptors including integrins, cytokines, steroid hormones, and others. IRS proteins are subject to a spectrum of post-translational modifications essential for their activation, encompassing phosphorylation events in distinct tyrosine, serine, and threonine residues. Tyrosine residue phosphorylation is intricately linked to the activation of the insulin receptor cascade and its interaction with SH2 domains within a spectrum of proteins, including PI3K. Conversely, serine residue phosphorylation assumes a different function, serving to attenuate the effects of insulin. In this review, we have identified over 50 serine residues within IRS-1 that have been reported to undergo phosphorylation orchestrated by a spectrum of kinases, thereby engendering the activation or inhibition of different signaling pathways. Furthermore, we delineate the phosphorylation of over 10 distinct tyrosine residues at IRS-1 or IRS-2 in response to insulin, a process essential for signal transduction and the subsequent activation of PI3K.

Equine Gastric Ulcer Syndrome (EGUS) is a widespread disease with a very high prevalence and importance in horses. It includes two conditions: Equine squamous gastric disease (ESGD), linked to acid disturbances, and Equine Glandular Gastric Disease (EGGD), associated with inflammation and immune system issues. In saliva, increased levels of immunological markers have been observed in this disease, indicating immune system involvement. In addition, changes in biomarkers of oxidative stress have been described. In horses, IgG and IgA are proteins that appear in saliva and serum and are considered to be the major proteins in specific immunity; however, their levels in horses with EGUS have not been previously studied. This report aims to evaluate IgG and IgA concentrations in the saliva and serum of horses with EGUS, measured by automated assays, and compare them with other biomarkers of the immune and oxidative stress system. This work validated the IgG and IgA assays in saliva and showed that IgA significantly increased in the saliva of horses with EGUS. When the correlation between IgG and IgA and other biomarkers of immune system issues and oxidative stress such as ADA, S100 A8-A9 (calprotectin), S100 A12 (calgranulin), uric acid, FRAS, and AOPP was studied, IgA in saliva showed a significant moderate correlation with adenosine deaminase, indicating its possible involvement in the immune reaction occurring in EGUS.

Energy-dense foods are commonly rich in fat and simple sugars and poor in dietary fiber and micronutrients; regularly consuming them decreases the concentration and/or effect of anorexigenic hormones and may increase that of orexigenic ones, thereby decreasing satiety. In contrast, plant-derived phenolic-rich foods exert positive effects on satiety. In silico, in vitro, and in vivo investigations on some of most representative phenolic acids like chlorogenic acid (CGA), gallic acid (GA), ferulic acid (FA), and protocatechuic acid (PCA) have shown that they are able to modulate various hunger and satiety processes; however, there are few studies that show how their chemical structure contributes to achieve such effects. The objective of this review is to summarize how these phenolic acids can favorably modulate hormones and other satiety mediators, with emphasis on the chemical interactions exerted between the core of these compounds and their biological targets. The evidence suggests that they form interactions with certain hormones, their receptors, and/or enzymes involved in regulating hunger and satiety, which are attributed to their chemical structure (such as the position of hydroxyl groups). Further research is needed to continue understanding these molecular mechanisms of action and to utilize the knowledge in the development of health-promoting foods.

This article describes the complete development of a design project for a context-integrated appropriate technology, a gravity ropeway for transporting agricultural products in remote areas of Nepal. The main purpose was to improve and optimize existing gravity ropeway designs, prioritizing simplicity, safety, and local manufacturability and maintenance. The design process followed a phased methodological approach used in machine design, which included stages of definition, conceptual design, materialization, and detailed design. The results of the ropeway installation demonstrate a reduction in the time and effort required by farmers to transport their products, consequently leading to a significant improvement in their quality of life. Despite the methodology followed, deficiencies were identified in the project execution procedure: lack of documentation and lack of explicit consideration of the local context in the design specifications, which could compromise the continuity and success of the project. This analysis highlights the need to adapt traditional design methodologies to appropriate technology projects. Specific procedures that address the characteristics of the local environment should be included to integrate the design into the context and accurately determine the needs of users in development projects.

The general features of the shift to a dormant state in mycobacterial species include several phenotypic changes, reduced metabolic activities, and increased resistance to host and environmental stress conditions. In this study, we aimed to provide novel insights into the viability state and morphological changes in dormant M. smegmatis that contribute to its long-term survival under starvation or hypoxia. To this end, we conducted assays to evaluate cell viability, morphological changes and gene expression. During starvation, M. smegmatis exhibited a reduction in cell length, the presence of viable but non-culturable (VBNC) cells and the formation of anucleated small cells, potentially due to a phenomenon known as reductive cell division. Under hypoxia, a novel population of pleomorphic mycobacteria with a rough surface before the cells reached nonreplicating persistence 1 (NRP1) was identified. This population exhibited VBNC-like behaviour, with a loss of cell wall rigidity and the presence of lipid-body-like structures. Based on dosR and hspX expression, we suggest that M. smegmatis encounters reductive stress conditions during starvation, while lipid storage may induce oxidative stress during hypoxia. These insights into the heterogeneous populations presented here could offer valuable opportunities for developing new therapeutic strategies to control dormant mycobacterial populations.

Blood oxygen saturation (SpO2) is vital for patient monitoring, particularly in clinical settings. Traditional SpO2 estimation methods have limitations, which can be addressed by analyzing photoplethysmography (PPG) signals with artificial intelligence (AI) techniques. This systematic review, following PRISMA guidelines, analyzed 183 unique references from WOS, PubMed, and Scopus, with 26 studies meeting the inclusion criteria. The review examined AI models, key features, oximeters used, datasets, tested saturation intervals, and performance metrics while also assessing bias through the QUADAS-2 criteria. Linear regression models and deep neural networks (DNNs) emerged as the leading AI methodologies, utilizing features such as statistical metrics, signal-to-noise ratios, and intricate waveform morphology to enhance accuracy. Gaussian Process models, in particular, exhibited superior performance, achieving Mean Absolute Error (MAE) values as low as 0.57% and Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) as low as 0.69%. The bias analysis highlighted the need for better patient selection, reliable reference standards, and comprehensive SpO2 intervals to improve model generalizability. A persistent challenge is the reliance on non-invasive methods over the more accurate arterial blood gas analysis and the limited datasets representing diverse physiological conditions. Future research must focus on improving reference standards, test protocols, and addressing ethical considerations in clinical trials. Integrating AI with traditional physiological models can further enhance SpO2 estimation accuracy and robustness, offering significant advancements in patient care.

Phytophthora palmivora is the pathogen causing bud rot in oil palm (Elaeis guineensis). This pathogen secretes effector proteins that manipulate host defenses, contributing to disease progression. In this study, we systematically investigated the role of specific effector proteins in suppressing programmed cell death (PCD) in oil palm leaflets. Our approach included using genomic and transcriptomic data from a Colombian P. palmivora isolate alongside the coexpression network of a substantial effector dataset. From this analysis, ten candidate effectors were selected, characterized, and evaluated for their ability to suppress PCD in oil palm leaflets through transient expression via biolistics. Several effectors exhibited significant anti-PCD activity in susceptible and less susceptible oil palm genotypes. Notably, the effectors Avr3F (689), RxLR (1540), and RxLR (1546) demonstrated suppression of PCD in both genotypes, while the other effectors played variable roles in PCD regulation. Phylogenetic analysis further identified distinct clades among the effectors, possibly associated with their functional activities. Additionally, specific motifs, such as RXLR-dEER, K, and Y, appeared to correlate with PCD suppression. This research enhances our understanding of the molecular mechanisms underlying the interaction between P. palmivora effectors and oil palm host responses, highlighting these proteins’ genotype-specific regulation of PCD. The findings contribute valuable insights into plant–pathogen interactions and offer potential avenues for targeted disease control strategies in the oil palm industry.

Recently, there has been a huge increase in the different ways to manufacture polymer-based sensors. Methods like additive manufacturing, microfluidic preparation, and brush painting are just a few examples of new approaches designed to improve sensor features like self-healing, higher sensitivity, reduced drift over time, and lower hysteresis. That being said, we believe there is still a lot of potential to boost the performance of current sensors by applying modeling, classification, and machine learning techniques. With this approach, final sensor users may benefit from inexpensive computational methods instead of dealing with the already mentioned manufacturing routes. In this study, a total of 96 specimens of two commercial brands of Force Sensing Resistors (FSRs) were characterized under the error metrics of drift and hysteresis; the characterization was performed at multiple input voltages in a tailored test bench. It was found that the output voltage at null force (Vo_null) of a given specimen is inversely correlated with its drift error, and, consequently, it is possible to predict the sensor’s performance by performing inexpensive electrical measurements on the sensor before deploying it to the final application. Hysteresis error was also studied in regard to Vo_null readings; nonetheless, a relationship between Vo_null and hysteresis was not found. However, a classification rule base on k-means clustering method was implemented; the clustering allowed us to distinguish in advance between sensors with high and low hysteresis by relying solely on Vo_null readings; the method was successfully implemented on Peratech SP200 sensors, but it could be applied to Interlink FSR402 sensors. With the aim of providing a comprehensive insight of the experimental data, the theoretical foundations of FSRs are also presented and correlated with the introduced modeling/classification techniques.

Most electrical energy generation systems are based on synchronous generators; as a result, their analysis always provides interesting findings, especially if an approach different to those traditionally studied is used. Therefore, an approach involving the modeling and simulation of a synchronous generator connected to an infinite bus through a transmission line in a bond graph is proposed. The behavior of the synchronous generator is analyzed in four case studies of the transmission line: (1) a symmetrical transmission line, where the resistance and inductance of the three phases (a,b,c) are equal, which determine resistances and inductances in coordinates (d,q,0) as individual decoupled elements; (2) a symmetrical transmission line for the resistances and for non-symmetrical inductances in coordinates (a,b,c) that result in resistances that are individual decoupled elements and in a field of inductances in coordinates (d,q,0); (3) a non-symmetrical transmission line for resistances and for symmetrical inductances in coordinates (a,b,c) that produce a field of resistances and inductances as individual elements decoupled in coordinates (d,q,0); and (4) a non-symmetrical transmission line for resistances and inductances in coordinates (a,b,c) that determine resistances and inductance fields in coordinates (d,q,0). A junction structure based on a bond graph model that allows for obtaining the mathematical model of this electrical system is proposed. Due to the characteristics of a bond graph, model reduction can be carried out directly and easily. Therefore, reduced bond graph models for the four transmission line case studies are proposed, where the transmission line is seen as if it were inside the synchronous generator. In order to demonstrate that the models obtained are correct, simulation results using the 20-Sim software are shown. The simulation results determine that for a symmetrical transmission line, currents in the generator in the d and q axes are −25.87 A and 0.1168 A, while in the case of a non-symmetrical transmission line, these currents are −26.14 A and 0.0211 A, showing that for these current magnitudes, the generator is little affected due to the parameters of the generator and the line. However, for a high degree of non-symmetry of the resistances in phases a, b and c, it causes the generator to reach an unstable condition, which is shown in the last simulation of the paper.

Phytosomes are used as vehicles that carry plant extracts. They exhibit biological activities and possess better bioavailability, bioabsorption, and lower toxicity than drugs. Obesity is an inflammatory state in which oxidative stress is present, which triggers severe effects on the body’s organs. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of the extract and phytosomes of Callistemon citrinus on oxidative stress and inflammation in the liver and heart of Wistar rats fed with a high-fat-fructose diet. Phytosomes containing the extract of leaves of C. citrinus were prepared. The antioxidant, pro-inflammatory enzymes, and biomarkers of oxidative stress were evaluated. Among the groups, only the high-fat-fructose group presented an increase in the COX-2, 5-LOX, and MPO inflammatory enzymes, while the XO enzyme exhibited decreased activity. The groups were fed a hypercaloric diet for 15 weeks while orlistat, C. citrinus extract, and phytosomes were administered at three different concentrations, exhibiting enzyme activities similar to those of the control group. It was also observed that the lowest concentration of phytosomes had a comparable effect to the other concentrations. Callistemon citrinus extract can modulate the activities of enzymes involved in the inflammation process. Furthermore, small doses of phytosomes can serve as anti-inflammatory agents.

Biostimulants are an important alternative to improve and promote higher efficiency in cropping systems. Although the biostimulant industry has been developing for several years, there are still areas of opportunity for new sources of biostimulants as well as new ecofriendly extraction techniques that allow for a circular economy and the reuse of waste. Lignin is a heteropolymer that constitutes about 40% of the plant cell wall. A great source of lignin is agrowastes, giving it added value. Recently, its use has been tested in agronomy as a carrier of nutrients and pesticides. Walnuts are produced on a large scale in Northern Mexico, and the shell represents between 15 and 40% of its total weight. However, to obtain this biopolymer, to date, non-environmentally friendly techniques have been used; for this reason, it is necessary to find extraction alternatives to make this proposal sustainable. In this work, the obtaining and characterization of lignin through mild extraction conditions from nutshells and its evaluation as a biostimulant on the growth of tomato seedlings are reported. Lignin was extracted by hydrolysis with a mixture of acetic acid and distilled water (65:35 v/v). The results showed that it was possible to obtain 15% (w/w) lignin using mild solvents, evidenced by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), proton magnetic nuclear resonance (H-RMN), and infrared (IR). Subsequently, lignin solutions were prepared at different concentrations, 0, 10, 50, and 100 ppm, and applied via foliar weekly to tomato seedlings. A greater fresh weight of the stem was found with 10 and 50 ppm, and the height and the fresh biomass increased with the three concentrations (10, 50, and 100 ppm), concluding that lignin extracted from nutshells using mild conditions can act as a plant biostimulant.

The main mango cultivars produced in the southern Pacific region of Mexico are Ataulfo, Manila, Haden, and Criollo. However, mineral, nutritional, and nutraceutical composition studies are limited. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of cultivars on the nutritional, mineral, and nutraceutical qualities of mango produced in Mexico. The cultivar significantly affected (p ≤ 0.05) the fruit composition across these indices. Criollo had the highest potassium, magnesium, sodium, and zinc concentrations, while Haden showed the highest calcium content. Manila had the highest iron content, contributing 0.76% of the recommended daily intake. Ataulfo and Haden were statistically similar in manganese content, both higher than Criollo, with Ataulfo reaching the maximum copper concentration. Ataulfo also had the highest sugar content, while Criollo had the most dietary fiber (3.1%), double that of Ataulfo and Haden. Haden had the lowest dry matter (14.8%) and lowest protein content (0.46%), with Manila showing the lowest ash content. The cultivars also differed in nutraceutical composition: Ataulfo was highest in total phenols, DPPH, and vitamin A; Haden in carotenoids and flavonoids; and Criollo in vitamin C. Cultivar selection induces changes in mango nutritional composition.

Background/Objectives: YAT2150 is a first-in-class antiplasmodial compound that has been recently proposed as a new interesting drug for malaria therapy. Methods/Results: The fluorescence of YAT2150 rapidly increases upon its entry into Plasmodium, a property that can be of use for the design of highly sensitive diagnostic approaches. YAT2150 blocks the in vitro development of the ookinete stage of Plasmodium and, when added to an infected blood meal, inhibits oocyst formation in the mosquito. Thus, the compound could possibly contribute to future transmission-blocking antimalarial strategies. Cell influx/efflux studies in Caco-2 cells suggest that YAT2150 is internalized by endocytosis and also through the OATP2B1 transporter, whereas its main export route would be via OSTα. YAT2150 has an overall favorable drug metabolism and pharmacokinetics profile, and its moderate cytotoxicity can be significantly reduced upon encapsulation in immunoliposomes, which leads to a dramatic increase in the drug selectivity index to values close to 1000. Although YAT2150 binds amyloid-forming peptides, its in vitro fluorescence emission is stronger upon association with peptides that form amorphous aggregates, suggesting that regions enriched in unstructured proteins are the preferential binding sites of the drug inside Plasmodium cells. The reduction of protein aggregation in the parasite after YAT2150 treatment, which has been suggested to be directly related to the drug’s mode of action, is also observed following treatment with quinoline antimalarials like chloroquine and primaquine. Conclusions: Altogether, the data presented here indicate that YAT2150 can represent the spearhead of a new family of compounds for malaria diagnosis and therapy due to its presumed novel mode of action based on the interaction with functional protein aggregates in the pathogen.

Background: Mucosal leishmaniasis (ML) is a deforming type of American Tegumentary Leishmaniasis caused by Leishmania (Viannia) braziliensis that frequently does not respond to treatment. Despite its relapsing clinical course, few parasites are usually found in mucosal lesions. Host and parasite factors may be responsible for this paradox in the pathogenesis of the disease, allowing for both a low parasite burden and the inability of the host to clear and eliminate the disease. Methods and results: In this work, we present a clinical case of relapsing ML that was treated for 25 years without success with SbV, N-methyl glucamine, sodium stibogluconate, amphotericin B deoxycholate, gabromycin, antimonial plus thalidomide, liposomal amphotericin B, Leishvacin (a vaccine made in Brazil) and miltefosine. In a comparative analysis using nanoscale liquid chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry of protein extracts of L. (V.) braziliensis promastigotes isolated from the patient and from the reference strain (MHOM/BR/94/M15176), we observed increases in ATPase and HSP70 protein levels in the parasite. We also observed an impairment in the production of hydrogen peroxide by peripheral mononuclear blood monocytes (PBMCs), as assessed by the horseradish peroxidase-dependent oxidation of phenol red. Conclusions: We hypothesise that these parasite molecules may be linked to the impairment of host parasiticidal responses, resulting in Leishmania persistence in ML patients.

Water deficiency and potential drought periods could be important ecological factors influencing cultivation areas and productivity once different crops are established. The principal supply of vegetable oil for oil crops is oil palm, and new challenges are emerging in the face of climatic changes. This study investigated the photosynthetic performance of 12 genotypes of Elaeis exposed to drought stress under controlled conditions. The assay included genotypes of Elaeis guineensis, Elaeis oleifera, and the interspecific O×G hybrid (E. oleifera × E. guineensis). The principal results showed that the E. guineensis genotype was the most efficient at achieving photosynthesis under drought stress conditions, followed by the hybrid and E. oleifera genotypes. The physiological parameters showed good prospects for vegetal breeding with different O×G hybrids, mainly because of their ability to maintain the equilibrium between CO2 assimilation and stomatal aperture. We validated 11 genes associated with drought tolerance, but no differences were detected. These results indicate that no allelic variants were represented in the RNA during sampling for the validated genotypes. In conclusion, this study helps to define genotypes that can be used as parental lines for oil palm improvement. The gas exchange data showed that drought stress tolerance could define guidelines to incorporate the available genetic resources in breeding programs across the early selection in nursery stages.

Triacontanol is a long-chain primary alcohol derived from policosanol, known for its diverse biological activities, including functioning as a plant growth regulator and exhibiting anti-inflammatory and antitumoral effects. However, its application is limited due to its high hydrophobicity, resulting in poor absorption and reduced therapeutic effectiveness. A potential solution to this problem is the use of niosomes. Niosomes are carriers composed of non-ionic surfactants, cholesterol, charge-inducing agents, and a hydration medium. They are effective in encapsulating drugs, improving their solubility and bioavailability. The objective of this study was to optimize and synthesize nano-niosomes for the encapsulation of triacontanol. Niosomes were synthesized using a thin-film hydration method combined with ultrasonication, following a Box–Behnken design. Niosomes were characterized using various techniques including dynamic light scattering, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), confocal microscopy, high-resolution scanning electron microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Formulation 14 of niosomes achieved the desired size, polydispersity index (0.198 ± 0.008), and zeta potential (−31.28 ± 1.21). FTIR analysis revealed a characteristic signal in the 3400–300 cm−1 range, indicating intermolecular interactions due to a bifurcated hydrogen bond between cholesterol and S60. Confocal microscopy confirmed the presence of triacontanol through Nile Red fluorescence. TEM revealed the spherical structure of niosomes.

Leishmaniasis is a neglected tropical disease caused by parasites of the genus Leishmania. As approved human vaccines are not available, treatment and prevention rely heavily on toxic chemotherapeutic agents, which face increasing resistance problems. The development of effective vaccines against human leishmaniasis is of utmost importance for the control of the disease. Strategies that have been considered for this purpose range from whole-killed and attenuated parasites to recombinant proteins and DNA vaccines. The ideal vaccine must be safe and effective, ensuring lasting immunity through a robust IL-12-driven Th1 adaptive immune response. Despite some success and years of effort, human vaccine trials have encountered difficulties in conferring durable protection against Leishmania, a problem that may be attributed to the parasite’s antigenic diversity and the intricate nature of the host’s immune response. The aim of this review is to provide a thorough overview of recent advances in Leishmania vaccine development, ranging from initial trials to recent achievements, such as the ChAd63-KH DNA vaccine, which underscores the potential for effective control of leishmaniasis through continued research in this field.

This study investigates the effectiveness of hydrothermal and alkaline pretreatment methods in enhancing the concentration of fermentable sugars derived from rice husk waste. After the pretreatments, enzymatic hydrolysis and fermentation processes were executed to evaluate the ethanol production from each pretreatment. Rice husk powder measuring ≤250 µm was used. For the alkaline pretreatment, sodium hydroxide (NaOH) was used at concentrations ranging from 0.5, 1 to 1.5% w/v. The efficacy of the hydrothermal pretreatment method was evaluated after 15, 30 and 45 min at 120 °C. The enzymatic hydrolysis process was performed over 144 h at 50 °C, pH 4.8 with an enzyme loading of 30 FPU (filter paper units). Fermentation was carried out at 37 °C using a strain of Saccharomyces cerevisiae Hansen 1883 (NCYC 366). Results indicated that the optimal conditions for alkaline pretreatment were observed at a 1.5% NaOH, while the best hydrothermal procedure was achieved at 120 °C and 45 min. The impact of these pretreatments was assessed based on the efficiency of enzymatic hydrolysis. The alkaline pretreatment resulted in 81.70% conversion of cellulose to glucose and 96.30% conversion of hemicellulose to xylose. In contrast, the hydrothermal pretreatment achieved 93% cellulose-to-glucose conversion and 83.35% hemicellulose-to-xylose conversion. The ethanol production registered ranged from 13 to 13.23 g·L−1, corresponding to a conversion factor of 0.43 for ethanol from fermentable sugars.

This paper processes the 2015 Benefits of Gender Equality through Infrastructure Provision (BGEIP) Survey, a representative survey for the EU-28, to estimating the impact of everyday life infrastructure access on subjective well-being (SWB) from a gender perspective in Europe. Our estimations prove that accessing everyday life infrastructure in Europe indeed increases SWB, but it contributes to increasing more the SWB of women than that of men. Women’s well-being is positively affected for all kinds of everyday life infrastructures, but the differences with respect to men are larger for the Nursery category for children up to 3 years and for the Centers category for people with long term disabilities. In contrast, men’s well-being is only sensitive to the Health infrastructure and to the Gym and Workout places. Clearly, targeting infrastructure investment helping women in caring children, and other dependents in the family constitute an excellent vehicle for increasing women’s SWB and reducing gender inequality in Europe.

This paper presents a model predictive control (MPC) strategy to regulate output voltages in a multi-modular matrix converter topology for isolated loads. The converter system harnesses power from a six-phase permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG) to deliver sinusoidal voltages to a three-phase load, with LC filters positioned at the output of each MC module within the multi-modular scheme. The proposed MPC approach ensures that the output voltages remain within acceptable ranges of magnitude, phase, and frequency, even under load variations and system faults. This control strategy is particularly suitable for uninterruptible power supply systems, microgrids or other applications where voltage regulation is critical. Experimental studies validate the effectiveness of the control strategy under various load conditions, reference voltage changes, and simulated system fault scenarios. The results highlight the robustness and reliability of the proposed voltage control using the multi-modular matrix converter.

A phase 1–2, prospective, multicenter, randomized, open-label clinical trial (Code RPCEC00000382), with parallel groups, involving 1161 participants, was designed to assess the safety and immunogenicity of two Cuban COVID-19 vaccines (Mambisa and Abdala) in boosting COVID-19 immunity of convalescent adults after receiving one dose of either vaccine. The main safety outcome was severe vaccination adverse events occurring in 55% of vaccinees in Phase 1 and >70% in Phase 2. Neutralizing antibody titers against SARS-CoV-2 variants were evaluated. Both vaccines were safe—no deaths or severe adverse events occurred. Mild intensity adverse events were the most frequent (>73%); headaches predominated for both vaccines. Phase 1 responders were 83.3% (p = 0.0018) for Abdala. Mambisa showed similar results. Phase 2 responders were 88.6% for Abdala (p < 0.0001) and 74.2% for Mambisa (p = 0.0412). In both phases, anti-RBD IgG titers, inhibition percentages and neutralizing antibody titers increased significantly after the booster dose. Both vaccines were safe and their immunogenicity surpassed the study endpoints.

Purpose: The impact of ethical leadership on employee emotional exhaustion has been extensively analyzed. However, the impact of a leader’s moral intensity on an employee’s emotional state has gone largely unnoticed. This research demonstrates that ethical leadership influences employee emotional exhaustion as a function of the extent of the leader’s moral standards. Furthermore, this research finds that affective commitment acts as a mediating mechanism. Methods: A simple mediation model is used. The sample consists of 448 professionals in six organizations in the Colombian electrical sector who responded to an online questionnaire. The sampling is probabilistic by conglomerates. Findings: This research found a positive relationship between ethical leadership and emotional exhaustion, with affective commitment being a mechanism that helps explain this association. Ethical behavior is voluntary in nature and develops in an environment of trust. When an ethical leader surpasses specific moral turning points, a follower’s learning becomes an obligation, preventing affective fluidity. A search for acceptance implies constant consumption of resources that weakens the follower’s capacity for self-regulation until it is exhausted. Moreover, when the leader’s expectations are difficult to meet, affective commitment can lead to significant emotional ambiguity in followers. This context intensifies role stress and increases the likelihood of emotional exhaustion. Lastly, seniority in the workplace promotes emotional exhaustion. Originality: This research challenges conventional wisdom about the mitigating effect of ethical leadership on employees’ emotional states. It broadens the understanding of this management style and fills a crucial knowledge gap by introducing a new perspective. Practical Implications: A balanced and accessible leader can quickly convey a convincing ethical discourse. Emphasizing the vulnerability and importance of human beings can help prevent moral anguish and ethical distances. This, in turn, provides followers with resources to mitigate exhaustion and strengthen commitment.

As a significant global source of vegetable oil, the oil palm’s ability to withstand abiotic stresses, particularly drought, is crucial for sustainable agriculture. This is especially significant in tropical regions, where water scarcity is becoming more common. Nitrogen, a vital nutrient, plays an essential role in various physiological and biochemical processes in plants, directly influencing growth and stress tolerance. This study investigates the interaction between nitrogen sources (ammonium vs. nitrate) and drought stress in oil palm (Elaeis guineensis) seedlings, which is critical in enhancing productivity in this economically important crop. The experiment evaluated five commercial oil palm genotypes, which were supplied with nitrogen solutions (15 mM NH4+ or NO3−) for 46 days, followed by 30 days of progressive drought. The results showed that drought conditions universally reduced the biomass, with ammonium-fed plants exhibiting greater shoot biomass sensitivity than nitrate-fed plants. Drought also significantly decreased the chlorophyll a, PhiPS2, and root-reducing sugar levels—critical indicators of photosynthetic efficiency and overall plant health. The effects on the root architecture were complex, with ammonium nutrition differentially influencing the lateral root length under well-watered versus drought conditions, highlighting nitrogen forms’ nuanced role in root development. Importantly, substantial genotypic variability was observed in most traits, affecting the responses to both the nitrogen source and drought stress. This variability suggests that certain genotypes may be better suited to cultivation in specific environmental conditions, particularly drought-prone areas. In conclusion, this study underscores the intricate interplay between nitrogen nutrition, genotypic variability, and drought tolerance in oil palm seedlings. These findings highlight the need to integrate these factors into agricultural management strategies to improve resilience and productivity in oil palm plantations.

The dehydration process modifies the physical and chemical characteristics of certain crops, thereby increasing their shelf life and consequently reducing the organic waste generated. This process is contingent upon maintaining optimal temperature and humidity levels to prevent deterioration of the product. As indirect dehydrators have a high energy demand, new designs are required that facilitate the uniform distribution of air with a high-volume capacity of 100 kg per day. In the present study, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) techniques were employed to assess the drying performance of two dehydrator models. The simulations were executed in Solidworks 2020 and Flow Simulation, and they examined temperature distribution and velocity within the interior of the dehydrators. In Model 1, an inlet volume flow of 0.08 m3 s−1 and a heat source of 3.5 kW are considered, within a volume of 2.11 m3. In Model 2, an inlet volume flow of 0.03 m3 s−1 and two heat source of 2.5 kW are considered, within a volume of 2.02 m3. Model 1 was unable to achieve uniform air distribution within the drying chamber. In contrast, Model 2 demonstrated uniform velocity and temperature across the majority of the drying chamber, making it a superior option.

Greenhouse cultivation is one of the current strategies to address the challenges of food production, sustainability, and food quality. Similarly, the use of technological tools to automate greenhouse environments through a set of sensors and actuators allows for the control and improvement of processes within this environment. This document presents data collected from the sensors and actuators of two identical greenhouse environments, one with the cultivation of stringless blue lake beans and the other without cultivation. The aim is that this dataset will provide a broader characterization of the behavior of climatic variables inside greenhouse environments and how they are impacted by control actions, subsequently contributing to the development of new research on implementations of or improvements to control, supervision, management, and automation actions in greenhouse environments.

When applied under abiotic stress conditions, triacontanol (TRIA) is effective in regulating the physicochemical processes in plants through mechanisms of defence such as abscisic acid (ABA) signalling. However, TRIA’s role in relation to ABA and stomatal opening is unclear. Therefore, the objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of TRIA and ABA and their combinations on different variables related to stomatal regulation in Solanum lycopersicum, which is subjected to drought stress, and on the leaf epidermis. The negative effects of stress and responses triggered by ABA were reversed in plants treated with TRIA. TRIA increased stomatal conductance and photosynthetic activity in the early hours, and it was determined that TRIA produced larger stomata than did the other treatments. Moreover, the chloroplasts of plants treated with TRIA were significantly smaller and more numerous than those of the control, which could improve CO2 diffusion efficiency and may be related to the regulation of stomatal opening and photosynthesis. Finally, the abaxial epidermis tests reaffirmed the inhibitory effects of TRIA on ABA on stomatal opening. These results confirm the important role of TRIA in regulating various processes in plants and processes triggered by ABA, such as those related to stomatal regulation.

This study aims to develop three-dimensional printing models of the bony nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses of big and domestic cats using reconstructed computed tomographic images. This work included an exhaustive study of the osseous nasal anatomy of the domestic cat carried out through dissections, bone trepanations and sectional anatomy. With the use of OsiriX viewer, the DICOM images were postprocessed to obtaining maximum-intensity projection and volume-rendering reconstructions, which allowed for the visualization of the nasal cavity structures and the paranasal sinuses, providing an improvement in the future anatomical studies and diagnosis of pathologies. DICOM images were also processed with AMIRA software to obtain three-dimensional images using semiautomatic segmentation application. These images were then exported using 3D Slicer software for three-dimensional printing. Molds were printed with the Stratasys 3D printer. In human medicine, three-dimensional printing is already of great importance in the clinical field; however, it has not yet been implemented in veterinary medicine and is a technique that will, in the future, in addition to facilitating the anatomical study and diagnosis of diseases, allow for the development of implants that will improve the treatment of pathologies and the survival of big felids.

Given the significant environmental consequences of current poultry feed practices and the heavy dependence of the European Union on imported soybeans, studying alternatives is crucial. This study evaluated the potential benefits of using locally sourced alternative plant-based ingredients and whole dry black soldier fly larvae in the diet of laying hens. The experiment involved 120 Isazul hens at 23 weeks old, which were divided into three groups with five replicates each (eight hens per replicate): a control diet (CON) based on soybean meal and cereals, an alternative diet (ALT) replacing the soybean meal with locally sourced plant-based resources (peas, distillers’ dried grains with solubles, and sunflower meal), and the ALT diet supplemented with 5% whole dry black soldier fly larvae (ALT+DBSFL). Over 15 weeks, the hens were fed ad libitum, and the production performance, egg quality, and plasma biochemical parameters were assessed across three experimental sub-periods. The results showed no significant differences in body weight, feed intake, egg production, egg weight, egg mass, or feed conversion ratio across the diets (p > 0.05). The egg quality remained consistent across all the groups; however, the hens fed the ALT+DBSFL diet exhibited higher Haugh units in the first experimental sub-period (p < 0.05) and lower plasma cholesterol and triglycerides at 32 weeks of age (p < 0.05). The findings of this study indicate that incorporating these alternative ingredients and whole DBSFL into layers’ diets does not compromise production performance, egg quality, or biochemical parameters related to health status, supporting their potential as sustainable feed alternatives.

This study investigates the multifaceted phenomenon of kinesiophobia, characterized by an irrational fear of movement, particularly prevalent among individuals with chronic pain. The research delves into various factors influencing kinesiophobia, including demographic variables, psychological experiences, and physical characteristics. Employing the Tampa Scale of Kinesiophobia, the study assesses fear levels and their correlation with pain perception and functional capacity. Findings reveal a significant relationship between kinesiophobia and psychological exhaustion, reduced alertness, and self-esteem issues, particularly among athletes. Moreover, factors such as fatigue, overextension, sleep quality, and nutritional habits are identified as contributing to the manifestation of kinesiophobia. Furthermore, our study employs meticulous data preprocessing and neural network modeling, achieving an accuracy of 94.54%, to explore predictive factors such as age, gender, and fear-related attitudes. Notably, while injury history emerges as a significant predictor of kinesiophobia, gender does not exert a substantial influence. The analysis underscores the complex interplay of physical, psychological, and environmental factors in shaping kinesiophobia and highlights the importance of tailored interventions targeting fear-related attitudes and promoting well-being and rehabilitation strategies in individuals affected by this condition.

This paper describes how a collective of Latine youth and adult allies used art-based approaches in a participatory action research project to better understand the ways in which young U.S. Latines make meaning of wellbeing. In this study, we interviewed 19 individuals who identified as Latino/a/e, ages 19–24, from Colorado, Washington state and New Jersey. Our team intentionally chose art-based approaches, including music and painting, as analytical tools and healing methods to synthesize the responses of the Latine youth we interviewed. We found that Latine youth and young adults initially struggle with defining wellbeing, considering it to be an overly abstract concept or something only achievable through expensive, Western-based medical practices. We also found that many Latine youth often link the root cause of a majority of their mental health issues to numerous systemic terrors such as racism, capitalism and sexism that directly harm their most intimate and supportive relationships: their immediate or extended family and friendships. Young Latine adults have identified these components as pillars of their wellbeing, along with the need for intergenerational conversations, a sense of convivencia, rootedness with freedom of movement and our right to healing and joy.

The increasing use of the zebrafish (Danio rerio) in scientific experiments has made it necessary to implement anesthesia protocols guaranteeing minimum pain and suffering for these animals and ensuring the reliability of the results obtained from their research. Therefore, we aimed to compare the effectiveness of two anesthetics, eugenol and MS-222, in consecutive administrations and evaluate the zebrafish behaviour after repeated anesthesia. Thus, several zebrafish were anaesthetized with eugenol, MS-222, and buffered MS-222 three times repeatedly with a 24-h interval between each exposure. The induction and recovery periods were also timed. Their swimming frequency was determined after each exposure to assess their behaviour after the anesthesia. Anesthesia induction was quicker with eugenol compared to MS-222. However, eugenol presented longer recovery times, which were prolonged after each exposure. Also, the swimming frequency was reduced after each anesthesia with eugenol. The buffered version of MS-222 was more efficacious than the non-buffered one. Both versions of MS-222 did not affect the swimming frequency. Based on these findings, we recommend the utilization of MS-222 buffered rather than eugenol when repeated, brief-duration anesthesia is necessitated for a study.

Child neglect, recognized as the most prevalent form of child maltreatment with profound repercussions on children’s development, has received limited scholarly attention compared to abuse. The current study addresses this shortfall with a qualitative research investigation involving 10 multicultural focus groups of youths aged 12 to 15. The research examined how young individuals identify signs of child neglect and discern whether formal and informal sources of assistance may be relied upon to assist in addressing this issue. Through qualitative–thematic analysis, three primary themes emerged: (1) Characteristics of neglected children, (2) challenges in identifying child neglect, and (3) official and unofficial sources to appeal for assistance when child neglect is identified. This study’s insights concern peers’ recognition of signs indicating neglect in children and their perspectives on potential assistance.

Epidemiological studies and meta-analyses have shown a strong association between high seroprevalence of Toxoplasma gondii (T. gondii) and schizophrenia. Schizophrenic patients showed higher levels of anti-Toxoplasma immunoglobulins M and G (IgM and IgG) when compared to healthy controls. Previously, in a rat model, we demonstrated that the progeny of mothers immunized with T. gondii lysates before gestation had behavioral and social impairments during adulthood. Therefore, we suggested that T. gondii infection can trigger autoreactivity by molecularly mimicking host brain proteins. Here, we aimed to identify the occurrence of antigenic mimicry between T. gondii epitopes and host brain proteins. Using a bioinformatic approach, we predicted T. gondii RH-88 B cell epitopes and compared them to human cell-surface proteins involved in brain development and differentiation (BrainS). Five different algorithms for B-cell-epitope prediction were used and compared, resulting in 8584 T. gondii epitopes. We then compared T. gondii predicted epitopes to BrainS proteins by local sequence alignments using BLASTP. T. gondii immunogenic epitopes significantly overlapped with 42 BrainS proteins. Among these overlapping proteins essential for brain development and differentiation, we identified HSP90 and NOTCH receptors as the proteins most likely to be targeted by the maternally generated pathogenic antibodies due to their topological overlap at the extracellular region of their sequence. This analysis highlights the relevance of pregestational clinical surveillance and screening for potential pathogenic anti-T. gondii antibodies. It also identifies potential targets for the design of vaccines that could prevent behavioral and cognitive impairments associated with pre-gestational T. gondii exposure.

Currently, the increase in devices capable of continuously collecting data on non-stationary and dynamic variables affects predictive models, particularly if they are not equipped with algorithms capable of adapting their parameters and structure, causing them to be unable to perceive certain time-varying properties or the presence of missing data in data streams. A constantly developing solution to such problems is evolving fuzzy inference systems. The aim of this work was to systematically review forecasting models implemented through evolving fuzzy inference systems, identifying the most common structures, implementation outcomes, and predicted variables to establish an overview of the current state of this technique and its possible applications in other unexplored fields. This research followed the PRISMA methodology of systematic reviews, including scientific articles and patents from three academic databases, one of which offers free access. This was achieved through an identification, selection, and inclusion workflow, obtaining 323 records on which analyses were carried out based on the proposed review questions. In total, 62 investigations were identified, proposing 115 different system structures, mainly focused on increasing precision, in addition to addressing eight main fields of application and some optimization techniques. It was observed that these systems have been successfully implemented in forecasting variables with dynamic behavior and handling missing values, continuous data flows, and non-stationary characteristics. Thus, their use can be extended to phenomena with these properties.

Purpose: Sodium N-[8-(2-hydroxybenzoyl)amino]caprylate (SNAC) is a well-known penetration enhancer widely used in commercial applications. This study aims to broaden its properties through a novel strategy of converting it into its phenolate salts. The objective is to investigate the synthesis of SNAC phenolate salts, specifically SNAC–choline (SNAC-CH), SNAC–sodium (SNAC-Na), and SNAC–phosphatidylcholine (SNAC-PC), and to explore their potential application in improving the oral absorption of semaglutide. Methods: The synthesis of SNAC phenolate salts was confirmed through 1H-NMR, FTIR, and an elemental analysis of C, H, N, and O. In vivo testing was conducted to assess the oral delivery of semaglutide using these synthesized SNAC phenolate salts. Pharmacokinetic (PK) values were measured to evaluate the impact on drug absorption. Results: The synthesis of SNAC phenolate salts (SNAC-CH, SNAC-Na, and SNAC-PC) was successfully achieved under appropriate conditions, and their structures were confirmed using analytical techniques such as IR, NMR, and CHN elemental analysis. The paradigm of their use was evaluated through an oral pharmacokinetic (PK) in vivo study using SNAC phenolate salts, which did not impair the original SNAC PK values. This suggests that this strategy holds promise as a potential new effective enhancer for oral absorption. Conclusions: The utilization of SNAC phenolate salts presents a novel and promising strategy for extending the verity of penetration enhancers’ molecules and properties. Synthesizing phenolate salts represents a new chemical strategy that may open new avenues in molecular development. This approach holds future potential to enhance the oral delivery of peptide drugs like semaglutide without compromising therapeutic efficacy. Overall, it offers significant advancements in the field by providing a potential alternative to injectable peptides through oral delivery systems.

Combining ionic liquids (ILs) and metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) can be an intriguing opportunity to develop advanced materials with different adsorption capabilities for environmental applications. This study reports the preparation and characterization of a 3D pillared-layered compound, namely, [Zn2(tz)2(bdc)] (CIM91), formed by 1,2,4-triazole (Htz) and 1,4-benzenedicarboxylic acid (H2bdc) ligands. Then, various loadings of the water-stable and hydrophobic IL, 1-n-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate ([BMIM][PF6]), and the water-soluble 1-n-butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride ([BMIM][Cl]) were incorporated into CIM91. Detailed characterization by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), FT-IR spectra, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis, N2 adsorption measurements, and thermogravimetric analysis confirmed the formation of [BMIM][X]/CIM91 composites and the structural stability of the MOF after the incorporation of the ionic liquids. CO2 adsorption–desorption analysis was experimentally carried out for all the materials at 298 K and 318 K, demonstrating a great enhancement in the CO2 adsorption properties of the sole MOF CIM91, particularly by including [BMIM][PF6] species in its structure with a double isosteric heat of CO2 adsorption. The composites were also tested for the adsorption of methylene blue (MB) dye. The results indicate that the incorporation of [BMIM][X] into CIM91 can substantially modify the adsorption properties of the MOF. The influence of the nature of the [BMIM][X] anions on these properties has also been analyzed.

Selecting the best oil palm cultivars adapted to specific agro-climatic conditions helps ensure fruit and oil production success. Many biotic and abiotic problems can limit the productivity of the crop, some of which have not yet been described, as well as their symptoms and degree of impact. In oil palm, a disturbance known as leaf-bending occurs, in which the palms present a bending or breakage of the petiole in the leaves, representing a significant challenge for oil palm cultivation. Although leaf-bending in oil palm plantations is known, its effect on the palm’s performance and its possible causes are unknown. Thus, the objectives of the present work were to describe and propose a quantitative way to evaluate leaf-bending in different cultivars (Elaeis guineensis Jacq. and the interspecific O×G hybrid) and to evaluate the disturbance effect on the physiology and nutritional balance of the oil palm. The results showed that most leaves from leaf rings three and four of the palm phyllotaxis have the highest affectation, with 74% leaf-bending. The cultivars with a Deli × La Mé and Coarí × La Mé genetic background were the most tolerant; however, the Deli × AVROS and Deli × Yangambi genetic crosses were the most susceptible. The difference in the affectation between the groups was 60% to 70%. Leaf-bending affected physiological parameters such as photosynthesis, transpiration, and stomatal conductance. Thus, below the second ring of leaves, the affected plants’ physiological parameters decreased between 40% and 50%. The nutritional diagnosis showed that the most sensitive cultivars to leaf-bending were Deli × AVROS, which presented the highest average index of nutritional balance (IBNm), indicating that this genetic cross had the highest nutritional imbalance. On the contrary, the most tolerant cultivars were Deli × La Mé, which presented the lowest IBNm, associated with a better nutritional condition.

We present a statistical study of some physical properties of medium-scale traveling ionospheric disturbances (MSTIDs) registered over the Mexican territory during 2018 and 2019 (solar minimum). The analysis is based on total electron content (TEC) approximations using data from the ground-based Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) receivers at different locations, divided into three regions according to geographic longitudes: west, center, and east. The MSTIDs were classified into day and night events, and only geomagnetically quiet days were considered to reduce the solar influence. We explored fundamental aspects of the MSTIDs, such as differences between day and night events, occurrence patterns, and geographical differences. Our results show some similarities with the occurrence periods of gravity waves, exhibiting high activity during summer and winter. For this period, however, most events occurred between 20:00 and 04:00 AM UT. The most energetic events, i.e., large amplitudes and power, occurred around the sunset terminator. This suggests that the density gradient generated when the sunlight falls benefits MSTID formation.

Water is an important resource for both human and environmental survival. However, due to current human practices, we are facing a serious crisis in accessing water. Thus, solutions must be explored to optimize the use of this resource. In the search for an organic water-retaining agent for agricultural use, the techno-functional properties of Aloe vera (Aloe barbadensis Miller) cuticle, an agro-industrial residue generated after gel extraction, were evaluated. The residue was dried and ground. The effects of particle size (180 µm and 250 µm), temperature (10 °C, 20 °C, 30 °C, and 40 °C), and pH (4.5, 6.0, and 7.0) on the solubility and water-holding capacity (WHC) of the obtained product (i.e., hydrogel) were then evaluated. The treatment with the highest WHC was selected and compared with the WHC of a commercial synthetic polyacrylamide gel widely used in agriculture. The effects of KNO3 and Ca(NO3)2 at different concentrations (10 g L−1, 20 g L−1, 30 g L−1, and 40 g L−1) on the WHC of the gels were assessed. Particle size, temperature, and pH interactions had statistically significant effects on solubility, while the WHC was affected by particle size × temperature and pH × temperature interactions. The highest product solubility (75%) was obtained at the smallest particle size (i.e., 180 µm), pH 4.5, and 20 °C. Meanwhile, the highest WHC (18 g g−1) was obtained at the largest particle size (i.e., 250 µm), pH 6.0, and 20 °C. This optimized gel kept its WHC across both salts and their concentrations. In contrast, the commercial gel significantly decreased its WHC with salt concentration. The product elaborated with A. vera cuticle could have bioeconomic potential as a water-retention agent for agricultural use, with the advantage that it is not affected by the addition of salts used for plant fertilization.

Background: Tolerance and dependence stand out as the most relevant risks observed during benzodiazepine (BZD) treatments. Objectives: To evaluate the degree of dependence of patients on BZD treatments using the Tyrer test; to define a profile of patients at risk of developing BZD dependence; and to discuss the role of the pharmaceutical care offered by the community pharmacy during dispensing. Methods: Prospective cross-sectional descriptive observational study (August 2020–February 2021) involving 127 patients using BZD. They voluntarily answered a questionnaire during the dispensing pharmaceutical care service. The study was evaluated and codified (code: DAA-CLO-2020-01) by the Spanish Agency for Drugs and Health Products (AEMPS), and statistical analysis was performed with SPSS 25.0. Results: 19.05% of patients using BZD were suspected of suffering from BZD tolerance, and 77.88% of all patients were identified as being at a high risk of BZD dependence. The Tyrer test for dependence indicated a mean score of 5.59 out of 13 points. An 18-fold increased risk of developing dependence was detected in the case of coexistence of high anxiety or depression. Conclusions: The community pharmacy, through protocolized care practices and supported by tools such as the Tyrer test, can play a decisive role in the detection, prevention, and resolution of the risks associated with BZD treatments.

Currently, the utilization of hyperprolific sows has stimulated the search for supplements aimed at enhancing piglet survival, as these sows yield more offspring than they can adequately feed with their colostrum production. In contrast, intensive goat farming often yields surplus colostrum, thus necessitating its removal, since kids are exclusively fed colostrum through lactation solely within the initial day of birth. The objective of this study was to examine and compare the fatty acid (FA) profiles of colostrum from sows and goats, together with possible influencing factors such as sow parity and the postpartum day of the goat, for possible use as an energy supplement for neonatal piglets. Swine colostrum was collected from sows with a 0–5 parity. In addition, samples of goat colostrum were collected on their first (D1) and second (D2) days of postpartum milking. The FA profiles of the colostrum were analyzed via gas chromatography. The parity value of the sows did not affect (p > 0.05) the FA colostrum composition. High proportions of palmitic, oleic, and linoleic acids were found in both types of colostrum. Levels of palmitic, oleic, and linoleic acids were significantly higher in D1 goat colostrum, whereas saturated FAs of less than 14 carbons (4:0, 6:0, 8:0, 10:0, and 12:0) were found in higher proportions in D2. These FAs play an important role in colostrum as they are a readily available source of energy and have also been attributed strong antibacterial activity. Therefore, goat colostrum, especially D2, could be used as an alternative energy supplement for newborn piglets, in particular for the weakest and smallest of the litter, which are the most in need.

We estimate the magnetic moment of electron neutrinos by computing the neutrino chirality flip rate that can occur in the core of a strange quark matter neutron star at birth. We show that this process allows neutrinos to anisotropically escape, thus inducing the star kick velocity. Although the flip from left- to right-handed neutrinos is assumed to happen in equilibrium, the no-go theorem does not apply because right-handed neutrinos do not interact with matter and the reverse process does not happen, producing the loss of detailed balance. For simplicity, we model the star core as consisting of strange quark matter. We find that even when the energy released in right-handed neutrinos is a small fraction of the total energy released in left-handed neutrinos, the process describes kick velocities for natal conditions, which are consistent with the observed ones and span the correct range of radii, temperatures and chemical potentials for typical magnetic field intensities. The neutrino magnetic moment is estimated to be μν∼3.6×10−18μB, where μB is the Bohr magneton. This value is more stringent than the bound found for massive neutrinos in a minimal extension of the standard model.

Dengue (DENV) and Chikungunya (CHIKV) viruses can be transmitted simultaneously by Aedes mosquitoes, and there may be co-infections in humans. However, how the adaptive immune response is modified in the host has yet to be known entirely. In this study, we analyzed the cross-reactivity and neutralizing activity of IgG antibodies against DENV and CHIKV in sera of patients from the Mexican Institute of Social Security in Veracruz, Mexico, collected in 2013 and 2015 and using IgG antibodies of BALB/c mice inoculated with DENV and/or CHIKV. Mice first inoculated with DENV and then with CHIKV produced IgG antibodies that neutralized both viruses. Mice were inoculated with CHIKV, and then with DENV; they had IgG antibodies with more significant anti-CHIKV IgG antibody neutralizing activity. However, the inoculation only with CHIKV resulted in better neutralization of DENV2. In sera obtained from patients in 2013, significant cross-reactivity and low anti-CHIKV IgG antibody neutralizing activity were observed. In CHIKV-positive 2015 sera, the anti-DENV IgG antibody neutralizing activity was high. These results suggest that CHIKV stimulates DENV2-induced memory responses and vice versa. Furthermore, cross-reactivity between the two viruses generated neutralizing antibodies, but exchanging CHIKV for DENV2 generated a better anti-CHIKV neutralizing response.
