Glyphosate is an herbicide used worldwide with harmful health effects, and efforts are currently being made to develop sensors capable of detecting its presence. In this work, an array of four interdigitated microwave sensors was used together with the multivariate statistical technique of principal component analysis, which allowed a well-defined pattern to be found that characterized waters for agricultural use extracted from the Bustillos lagoon. The variability due to differences between the samples was explained by the first principal component, amounting to 86.3% of the total variance, while the variability attributed to the measurements and sensors was explained through the second principal component, amounting to 13.2% of the total variance. The time evolution of measurements showed a clustering of data points as time passed, which was related to microwave–sample interaction, varied with the fluctuating dynamical structure of each sample, and tended to have a stable mean value.

Prunus serotina (black cherry) is native to America and has five subspecies: serotina, eximia, hirsuta, virens, and capuli. P. serotina subsp. capuli is found in Central and South America with superior fruits found in Ecuador. These have large, juicy, and tasty fruits used for human consumption. They are available in produce markets and have important nutraceutical properties. However, no commercial cultivars of capuli are currently available. The main goal of this research was to understand if different morphological characters can differentiate unique populations of P. serotina subsp. capuli present in Ecuador. Morphological traits (tree, leaf, and flower) of plants grown from the OP seeds of 44 capuli accessions collected from three provinces of Ecuador (Cotopaxi, Chimborazo, and Tungurahua) were characterized in 2019 and 2020. Tree measurements included the number of primary branches and growth habit. Leaf measurements included petiole length, leaf area, leaf height, leaf width, leaf apex angle, and leaf basal angle. Flower measurements included pedicel length, flower width, and flower length. Raceme length, number of racemes per branch, and number of flowers per raceme were also characterized. ANOVA were performed with significant differences observed among capuli accessions for all variables measured. No clear differences were observed across regions with PCA and cluster analysis that may support the presence of different populations.

Coffee is one of the most consumed beverages worldwide. Its production generates a large amount of waste, and its use is of vital importance to prevent it from becoming a source of environmental pollution. Cuba is a country with a well-known coffee-growing tradition. Although coffee production has decreased, it is vitally important to use the waste generated in these productions to reduce environmental pollution. To know the possible use or application of coffee waste, it is necessary to know its composition. In this article, three Cuban Arabica coffee wastes (husk, parchment and spent coffee grounds) were characterized using chemical, physical and physicochemical methods. In the characterization of these wastes, SEM and EDX were used to determine their microscopic form and chemical composition. The Chesson–Datta method, ATR and TGA were used to determine whether these materials were lignocellulosic. Ash, pH and density of the waste were determined as characterization methods. The extractive content was determined and a phytochemical screening was performed to determine the groups of the secondary metabolites present.

Optimal veterinary care of managed elephant populations is vital due to the continued decline of wild populations. Appropriate health monitoring and accurate disease diagnosis include hematologic evaluation. Elephant hematology is distinctive in that elephants have high percentages of monocytes in health. Elephant monocytes also have unusual morphology, a feature shared with manatees and rock hyraxes. Manual white blood cell counting is used for elephant hematology, as analyzers are generally inaccurate. The aims of this study were to evaluate basic cell isolation and functional testing protocols for use in elephant monocyte research, and to test several available antibodies via flow cytometry for use in elephant monocyte identification. Peripheral blood samples from five Asian elephants (Elephas maximus) were used. Methods for monocyte isolation and evaluation of phagocytic function were established. Putative lymphocyte and monocyte populations were identified using a scatter on flow cytometry. Antibodies against CD11b, CD11c, CD14, and ionized calcium-binding adapter molecule 1 (IBA1) were tested, with IBA1 showing the highest apparent diagnostic utility in labeling monocytes. Combined flow cytometric scatter and IBA1 positivity appear to identify Asian elephant monocytes. These data provide a methodologic basis for further investigation into elephant monocyte function and immune response to infection.

The success of using active restoration in Mediterranean-type climate zones mostly depends on an appropriate matching of plant species and specific management prescriptions upon establishment. In this study, we assessed the early growth and short-term physiological acclimation of seven common species found in the sclerophyllous forests in central Chile to water restriction and shading. We established a nursery experiment that included three treatments (T0: sun-exposed and water-restricted, T1: sun-exposed and fully irrigated, and T2: shaded and fully irrigated) and seven tree species differing in their shade and drought tolerance (Quillaja saponaria Molina, Aristotelia chilensis (Mol.) Stuntz, Peumus boldus Molina, Lithraea caustica (Mol.) Hook. and Arn, Luma apiculata (DC.) Burret, Colliguaja odorifera Molina, and Escallonia pulverulenta (Ruiz and Prav.) Pers). We measured the increment in seedling height and different leaf morpho-physiological traits during two months in the dry season. Based on the measured traits, none of the species took advantage of the higher water availability in T1 relative to T0, but most of the species responded to the shade in T2, regardless of their shade or drought tolerance. Height increments due to shade varied from 0% in P. boldus to 203% in L. apiculata. Overall, all the species responded similarly to the treatments in specific leaf area, chlorophyll content index, photosynthetic rate, stomatal conductance, and intrinsic water use efficiency. This suggests that the species exhibited similar acclimation patterns of these parameters to shade and drought, even regarding the variation in midday xylem water potential found in the water-restricted treatment T0 (from −1.5 MPa in P. boldus to −3.1 MPa in E. pulverulenta). In this study, shading had a higher positive effect on the seedling performance of sclerophyllous species than watering, which at operational level highlights the need for investing in tree shelters when using these species in restoration programs.

Grid-connected power inverters are indispensable in modern electrical systems, playing a pivotal role in enhancing the integration of renewable energies into power grids. Their significance, primarily when functioning as grid-forming inverters, extends to maintaining the grid’s inertia and strength—a distinct advancement over traditional grid-following operations. As grid-forming inverters, these devices emulate the characteristics of synchronous generators and can act as robust voltage sources, providing essential ancillary services. This behavior is particularly relevant when integrating energy storage systems on the converters’ direct current side. Among the various inverter topologies, the current source inverter (CSI) has emerged as a promising yet underexplored alternative for grid-forming applications. CSIs, when paired with their AC output filters, can effectively operate as voltage sources, utilizing control strategies that facilitate the integration of renewable energies into the electrical system. Their design inherently manages output current fluctuations, reducing the need for restrictive current limitations or additional protective measures. This paper examines the operational region of CSIs, obtained through detailed modeling, to explore their advantages, challenges, and potential for enhancing grid-connected systems. Analyzing the operating region from the converter model verifies the limits of where the converter can operate in a plane of active and reactive powers. For a small prototype model operating with 7 amperes in DC and 120 V in AC, it is possible to supply or absorb active power exceeding 1000 W and manage maximum reactive power values around 500 VAr, as determined by its operating region. Simulations also confirm that small changes in the control reference, as little as 5%, towards the region’s right limits cause significant oscillations in the dynamic control responses. This research aims to deepen our understanding of CSIs’ operational capabilities and highlight their unique benefits in advancing grid-connected systems and promoting the integration of renewable energy using this technology.

Accurate observation of precipitation data is crucial for hydrometeorological applications, requiring temporal and spatial precision. Satellite precipitation products offer a promising solution for obtaining precipitation estimates, facilitating long-term observations from global to local scales. However, assessing their accuracy compared to rain gauge observations is essential. This study aims to assess the accuracy and applicability of precipitation data from CMORPH, IMERG, and PERSIANN CCS in the Rio Grande–San Juan Basin in northeast Mexico. The evaluation of estimated precipitation was assessed using the Pearson and Spearman correlations, RMSE, MAE, and BIAS for both monthly and yearly averages. CMORPH showed minimal errors and low underestimation, while IMERG exhibited high correlations with consistent underestimation. PERSIANN CCS had lower correlations, significant overestimation, and higher errors. The Mann–Kendall (MK) test was used to determinate the precipitation trends of observed and estimated data. The observed data showed a significant positive trend in monthly averages, which is not reflected in the annual trend. Furthermore, negative annual trends were found in at least 10 stations across the basin. The application of satellite precipitation data yielded mixed outcomes, with CMORPH showing the highest level of agreement with the trend analysis results from rain gauge data. This demonstrates its reliability for weather and climate studies and suggests the potential for CMORPH to be used as an input in hydrological modeling.

Over the last few decades, in vitro single-molecule manipulation techniques have enabled the use of force and displacement as controlled variables in biochemistry. Measuring the effect of mechanical force on the real-time kinetics of a biological process gives us access to the rates, equilibrium constants and free-energy landscapes of the mechanical steps of the reaction; this information is not accessible by ensemble assays. Optical tweezers are the current method of choice in single-molecule manipulation due to their versatility, high force and spatial and temporal resolutions. The aim of this review is to describe the contributions of our lab in the single-molecule manipulation field. We present here several optical tweezers assays refined in our laboratory to probe the dynamics and mechano-chemical properties of biological molecular motors and synthetic molecular devices at the single-molecule level.

The composites of heteropolyacids (H3PW12, H3PMo12) incorporated into amine-functionalized silica materials were used for the first time as heterogeneous catalysts in the valorization of glycerol (a major waste from the biodiesel industry) through acetalization reaction with acetone. The polyoxotungstate catalyst H3PW12@AptesSBA-15 exhibited higher catalytic efficiency than the phosphomolybdate, achieving 97% conversion and 97% of solketal selectivity, after 60 min at 25 °C, or 91% glycerol conversion and the same selectivity, after 5 min, performing the reaction at 60 °C. A correlation between catalytic performance and catalyst acidity is presented here. Furthermore, the stability of the solid catalyst was investigated and discussed.

Materials with enhanced wear resistance are constantly in high demand. Nickel-based self-fluxing materials deposited by atmospheric plasma spraying (APS) have feasible wear resistance performance. This study aimed to evaluate the results of a nickel-based self-fluxing alloy coating deposited on AISI 4340 steel substrate using APS. Additionally, the temperature at which the remelting process achieved optimal results was investigated. The AISI 4340 steel substrate samples were coated with a self-fluxing NiCrBSiCFe powder by APS. The post-coating remelting process was performed in a controlled atmosphere tube furnace at 900, 1000, and 1100 °C. Microstructural analysis was carried out by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) before and after remelting. The estimated porosity of the as-sprayed sample was 3.28%, while the remelted coating sample at 1100 °C had only 0.22% porosity. Furthermore, a microhardness measurement was conducted, and the best condition yielded an average value of 750 HV0.5. Tribological tests were performed to evaluate the coefficient of friction and wear rates, revealing that at 1100 °C, the as-sprayed coating had a wear rate of 9.16 × 10−5 [mm3/(N*m] and the remelted coating had 4.106 × 10−5 [mm3/(N*m]. The wear-loss volume was determined to be 14.1 mm3 for the as-sprayed coating sample and 3.6 mm3 for the remelted coating at 1100 °C.

Hybrid Distribution Transformers (HDTs) offer a compelling alternative to traditional low-frequency transformers (LFTs), providing auxiliary services in addition to standard functionalities. By integrating LFTs with power converters, HDTs enhance the operational capabilities of the system. The specific configuration in which converters are connected to the transformer allows for the provision of multiple services. This can not only prevent network failures but also extend the lifespan of its components, an outcome that is highly desirable in a distribution grid. This article discusses an HDT developed to mitigate voltage fluctuations in the grid and to decrease the reactive power drawn from the secondary side of traditional LFTs. A finite-control-set model predictive control (FCS-MPC), in conjunction with linear controllers, is utilized for the effective management of the HDT converters. Two separate control loops are established to regulate voltage and reactive power on the secondary side of the transformer. Results from Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) testing affirm the proficiency of HDT in reducing grid voltage variations by 15% and in cutting reactive power consumption by up to 94%. The adopted control strategy and topology are demonstrated to be effective in stabilizing voltage and reactive power fluctuations while concurrently facilitating the charging of the converters’ DC link directly from the grid.

The use of advanced modulation and control schemes for power converters, such as a Feedback Quantizer and Predictive Control, is widely studied in the literature. This work focuses on improving the closed-loop modulation scheme called Feedback Quantizer, which is applied to a three-phase voltage source inverter. This scheme has the natural behavior of mitigating harmonics at low frequencies, which are detrimental to electrical equipment such as transformers. This modulation scheme also provides good tracking for the voltage reference at the fundamental frequency. On the other hand, the disadvantage of this scheme is that it has a variable switching frequency, creating a harmonic spectrum in frequency dispersion, and it also needs a small sampling time to obtain good results. The proposed scheme to improve the modulation scheme is based on a Discrete Space Vector with virtual vectors to obtain a better approximation of the optimal vectors for use in the algorithm. The proposal improves the conventional scheme at a high sampling time (200 μs), obtaining a THD less than 2% in the load current, decreases the noise created by the conventional scheme, and provides a fixed switching frequency. Experimental tests demonstrate the correct operation of the proposed scheme.

The increasing energy required to synthesize inorganic fertilizers warrants more sustainable soil amendments that produce comparable crop yields with less environmental damage. Duckweed, a prolific aquatic plant, can not only sequester carbon dioxide through photosynthesis, but also hyperaccumulate nutrients from its environment and upcycle them into valuable bioproducts. In this study, dried duckweed, grown on treated wastewater treatment plant effluent, was utilized as a fertilizer for a variety of crops (beet, tomato, kale, and sorghum). Comparative experiments examined the effect of duckweed, inorganic fertilizer, and a 40–60 mix of both on crop yield and nutrient fate in the plants, soil, and leachate. Comparable yields of beet, tomato, and sorghum were generated with duckweed and inorganic fertilizer. Duckweed significantly enhanced phosphorus (P) uptake in sorghum, exhibiting a P use efficiency level of 18.48%, while the mix treatment resulted in the highest P use efficiencies in beet and tomato. Duckweed-amended beet and kale systems also increased residual soil N (0.9% and 11.1%, respectively) and carbon (4.5% and 16.6%, respectively). Linear regression models developed using the data collected from all crops confirmed that duckweed can be used as a substitute for inorganic fertilizer without negative effects to food yield or nutritional quality.

Introduction: The vestibular system, essential for gaze and postural stability, can be damaged by threats on the battlefield. Technology can aid in vestibular assessment and rehabilitation; however, not all devices are conducive to the delivery of healthcare in an austere setting. This scoping review aimed to examine the literature for technologies that can be utilized for vestibular assessment and rehabilitation in operational environments. Materials and Methods: A comprehensive search of PubMed was performed. Articles were included if they related to central or peripheral vestibular disorders, addressed assessment or rehabilitation, leveraged technology, and were written in English. Articles were excluded if they discussed health conditions other than vestibular disorders, focused on devices or techniques not conducive to the operational environment, or were written in a language other than English. Results: Our search strategy yielded 32 articles: 8 articles met our inclusion and exclusion criteria whereas the other 24 articles were rejected. Discussion: There is untapped potential for leveraging technology for vestibular assessment and rehabilitation in the operational environment. Few studies were found in the peer-reviewed literature that described the application of technology to improve the identification of central and/or peripheral vestibular system impairments; triage of acutely injured patients; diagnosis; delivery and monitoring of rehabilitation; and determination of readiness for return to duty. Conclusions: This scoping review highlighted technology for vestibular assessment and rehabilitation feasible for use in an austere setting. Such technology may be leveraged for prevention; monitoring exposure to mechanisms of injury; vestibular-ocular motor evaluation; assessment, treatment, and monitoring of rehabilitation progress; and return-to-duty determination after vestibular injury. Future Directions: The future of vestibular assessment and rehabilitation may be shaped by austere manufacturing and 3D printing; artificial intelligence; drug delivery in combination with vestibular implantation; organ-on-chip and organoids; cell and gene therapy; and bioprinting.

Energy supply interruptions or blackouts caused by faults in power distribution feeders entail several damages to power utilities and consumer units: financial losses, damage to power distribution reliability, power quality deterioration, etc. Most studies in the specialized literature concerning faults in power distribution systems present methodologies for detecting, classifying, and locating faults after their occurrence. In contrast, the main aim of this study is to prevent faults by estimating the city regions whose power grid is most vulnerable to them. In this sense, this work incorporates a geographical-space study via a spatial data analysis using the local variable electrical discharge density that can increase fault risks. A geographically weighted spatial analysis is applied to data aggregated by regions to produce thematic maps with the city regions whose feeders are more vulnerable to failures. The spatial data analysis is implemented in QGIS and R programming environments. It is applied to the real data of faults in distribution power grid transformers and electrical discharges in a medium-sized city with approximately 200,000 inhabitants. In this study, we highlight a moderate positive correlation between electrical discharge density and the percentage of faults in transformers by regions in the central and western areas of the city under study.

In recent years, the treatment of advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) has suffered a variety of alterations. Chemotherapy (CTX), immunotherapy (IT) and tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKI) have shown remarkable results. However, not all patients with NSCLC respond to these drug treatments or receive durable benefits. In this framework, metabolomics has been applied to improve the diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis of lung cancer and particularly lung adenocarcinoma (AdC). In our study, metabolomics was used to analyze plasma samples from 18 patients with AdC treated with CTX or IT via 1H-NMR spectroscopy. Relevant clinical information was gathered, and several biochemical parameters were also evaluated throughout the treatments. During the follow-up of patients undergoing CTX or IT, imaging control is recommended in order to assess the effectiveness of the therapy. This evaluation is usually performed every three treatments. Based on this procedure, all the samples were collected before the beginning of the treatment and after three and six treatments. The identified and quantified metabolites in the analyzed plasma samples were the following: isoleucine, valine, alanine, acetate, lactate, glucose, tyrosine, and formate. Multivariate/univariate statistical analyses were performed. Our data are in accordance with previous published results, suggesting that the plasma glucose levels of patients under CTX become higher throughout the course of treatment, which we hypothesize could be related to the tumor response to the therapy. It was also found that alanine levels become lower during treatment with CTX regimens, a fact that could be associated with frailty. NMR spectra of long responders’ profiles also showed similar results. Based on the results of the study, metabolomics can represent a potential option for future studies, in order to facilitate patient selection and the monitoring of therapy efficacy in treated patients with AdC. Further studies are needed to improve the prospective identification of predictive markers, particularly glucose and alanine levels, as well as confer guidance to NSCLC treatment and patient stratification, thus avoiding ineffective therapeutic strategies.

The aim of the present work was to evaluate the influence of two different pharmaceutical compounds (bezafibrate and paroxetine) on the phytoremediation potential of Phragmites australis in an estuarine medium contaminated by copper. Plants were exposed for seven days to a simplified estuarine medium, elutriate solution, with or without sediment. The medium was doped with copper and bezafibrate or paroxetine. P. australis plants were able to accumulate a significant amount of Cu, particularly in their roots (600 and 250 times increase in copper levels in the absence and presence of sediment, respectively), corroborating the phytostabilization potential of salt marsh plants. Metal uptake and translocation was significantly lower in the presence of sediment (Cu in leaves increased 20 times in the absence and only 4 times in the presence of sediment). An effect of either pharmaceutical compound on metal accumulation was not observed (levels of Cu in plants tissues were in general identical) but, in the presence of sediment, both bezafibrate and paroxetine changed Cu solubility in elutriate solution, either decreasing or increasing it. The current study highlights the possible influence the presence of contaminants of different characteristics (inorganic and organic contaminants) can have on salt marsh phytoremediation potential in the long run, and the effects pollutants might have in the environment.

Consumption of high amounts of ethanol is a risk factor for development of cardiovascular diseases such as arterial hypertension. The hypertensive state induced by ethanol is a complex multi-factorial event, and oxidative stress is a pathophysiological hallmark of vascular dysfunction associated with ethanol consumption. Increasing levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the vasculature trigger important processes underlying vascular injury, including accumulation of intracellular Ca2+ ions, reduced bioavailability of nitric oxide (NO), activation of mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPKs), endothelial dysfunction, and loss of the anticontractile effect of perivascular adipose tissue (PVAT). The enzyme nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADPH) oxidase plays a central role in vascular ROS generation in response to ethanol. Activation of the renin–angiotensin–aldosterone system (RAAS) is an upstream mechanism which contributes to NADPH oxidase stimulation, overproduction of ROS, and vascular dysfunction. This review discusses the mechanisms of vascular dysfunction induced by ethanol, detailing the contribution of ROS to these processes. Data examining the association between neuroendocrine changes and vascular oxidative stress induced by ethanol are also reviewed and discussed. These issues are of paramount interest to public health as ethanol contributes to blood pressure elevation in the general population, and it is linked to cardiovascular conditions and diseases.

The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has recently revised its strategy for shipping decarbonization, deepening the ambition to reduce annual greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. The accomplishment of this strategy requires the large-scale deployment of alternative maritime fuels, whose diversity and technical characteristics impose transition challenges. While several studies address the production of these fuels, a notable gap lies in the analysis of the required adaptations in vessels and ports for their usage. This study aims to fill this gap with a comprehensive review of material compatibility, storage in ports/vessels, and bunkering technology. First, we analyze key aspects of port/vessel adaptation: physical and chemical properties; energy conversion for propulsion; fuel feeding and storage; and bunkering procedures. Then, we perform a maturity assessment, placing each studied fuel on the technological readiness scale, revealing the most promising options regarding infrastructure adaptability. Finally, we develop a case study from Brazil, whose economy is grounded on maritime exports. The findings indicate that multi-product ports may have the potential to serve as multi-fuel hubs, while the remaining ports are inclined to specific fuels. In terms of vessel categories, we find that oil tankers, chemical ships, and gas carriers are most ready for conversion in the short term.

Automatic hand gesture recognition in video sequences has widespread applications, ranging from home automation to sign language interpretation and clinical operations. The primary challenge lies in achieving real-time recognition while managing temporal dependencies that can impact performance. Existing methods employ 3D convolutional or Transformer-based architectures with hand skeleton estimation, but both have limitations. To address these challenges, a hybrid approach that combines 3D Convolutional Neural Networks (3D-CNNs) and Transformers is proposed. The method involves using a 3D-CNN to compute high-level semantic skeleton embeddings, capturing local spatial and temporal characteristics of hand gestures. A Transformer network with a self-attention mechanism is then employed to efficiently capture long-range temporal dependencies in the skeleton sequence. Evaluation of the Briareo and Multimodal Hand Gesture datasets resulted in accuracy scores of 95.49% and 97.25%, respectively. Notably, this approach achieves real-time performance using a standard CPU, distinguishing it from methods that require specialized GPUs. The hybrid approach’s real-time efficiency and high accuracy demonstrate its superiority over existing state-of-the-art methods. In summary, the hybrid 3D-CNN and Transformer approach effectively addresses real-time recognition challenges and efficient handling of temporal dependencies, outperforming existing methods in both accuracy and speed.

Galaxy rotation curve (RC) fitting is an important technique which allows the placement of constraints on different kinds of dark matter (DM) halo models. In the case of non-phenomenological DM profiles with no analytic expressions, the art of finding RC best-fits including the full baryonic + DM free parameters can be difficult and time-consuming. In the present work, we use a gradient descent method used in the backpropagation process of training a neural network, to fit the so-called Grand Rotation Curve of the Milky Way (MW) ranging from ∼1 pc all the way to ∼105 pc. We model the mass distribution of our Galaxy including a bulge (inner + main), a disk, and a fermionic dark matter (DM) halo known as the Ruffini-Argüelles-Rueda (RAR) model. This is a semi-analytical model built from first-principle physics such as (quantum) statistical mechanics and thermodynamics, whose more general density profile has a dense core–diluted halo morphology with no analytic expression. As shown recently and further verified here, the dark and compact fermion-core can work as an alternative to the central black hole in SgrA* when including data at milliparsec scales from the S-cluster stars. Thus, we show the ability of this state-of-the-art machine learning tool in providing the best-fit parameters to the overall MW RC in the 10−2–105 pc range, in a few hours of CPU time.

Climate change is threatening the restoration efforts in Mediterranean ecosystems, and there is still little knowledge about the responses of some sclerophyllous species to plant management techniques. This study assessed the effects of the planting date, use of mulch, and controlling light levels on the early survival and growth of sclerophyllous species established in island plots. A factorial design was installed in the Metropolitan Region of central Chile, with a treatment combination that included three planting dates (January: midsummer, April: autumn, and June: winter), three light levels (full sun exposed (T0), shaded at 35% (T35), and shaded at 70% (T70)), and two mulch levels (no mulch versus mulch application). Additionally, we tested the species effects within the island plot. We measured survival, as well as plant diameter and height increments, 1 year after establishment. Each island plot contained three seedlings of Acacia caven Mol., two of Quillaja saponaria Mol., two of Maytenus boaria Mol., one of Schinus polygamus (Cav.) Cabrera, and one of Cryptocarya alba (Mol.) Losser. We found a significant main effect for all the factors assessed. Despite the high mortality in the trial, survival was increased around fourfold by planting in winter, using mulch, or using either of the shading levels. At the species level, average survival ranged from 7% for C. alba to 27% for S. polygamous. To increase plant survival in the restoration of this ecosystem, it is necessary to intensify the management techniques and the use of these types of eco-technologies; if not, the restoration may fail.

The apicomplexan protozoan parasite Cryptosporidium parvum is responsible for cryptosporidiosis, which is a zoonotic intestinal illness that affects newborn cattle, wild animals, and people all over the world. Mammalian monocytes are bone marrow-derived myeloid leukocytes with important defense effector functions in early host innate immunity due to their ATP purinergic-, CD14- and CD16-receptors, adhesion, migration and phagocytosis capacities, inflammatory, and anti-parasitic properties. The formation of monocyte extracellular traps (METs) has recently been reported as an additional effector mechanism against apicomplexan parasites. Nonetheless, nothing is known in the literature on METs extrusion neither towards C. parvum-oocysts nor sporozoites. Herein, ATP purinergic receptor P2X1, glycolysis, Notch signaling, and lactate monocarboxylate transporters (MCT) were investigated in C. parvum-exposed bovine monocytes under intestinal physioxia (5% O2) and hyperoxia (21% O2; most commonly used hyperoxic laboratory conditions). C. parvum-triggered suicidal METs were confirmed by complete rupture of exposed monocytes, co-localization of extracellular DNA with myeloperoxidase (MPO) and histones (H1-H4) via immunofluorescence- and confocal microscopy analyses. C. parvum-induced suicidal METs resulted not only in oocyst entrapment but also in hindered sporozoite mobility from oocysts according to scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analyses. Early parasite-induced bovine monocyte activation, accompanied by membrane protrusions toward C. parvum-oocysts/sporozoites, was unveiled using live cell 3D-holotomographic microscopy analysis. The administration of NF449, an inhibitor of the ATP purinergic receptor P2X1, to monocytes subjected to varying oxygen concentrations did not yield a noteworthy decrease in C. parvum-induced METosis. This suggests that the cell death process is not dependent on P2X1. Additionally, blockage of glycolysis in monocyte through 2-deoxy glucose (2-DG) inhibition reduced C. parvum-induced METosis but not significantly. According to monocyte energetic state measurements, C. parvum-exposed cells neither increased extracellular acidification rates (ECAR) nor oxygen consumption rates (OCR). Lactate monocarboxylate transporters (MCT) inhibitor (i.e., AR-C 141990) treatments significantly diminished C. parvum-mediated METs extrusion under physioxic (5% O2) condition. Similarly, treatment with either DAPT or compound E, two selective Notch inhibitors, exhibited no significant suppressive effects on bovine MET production. Overall, for the first time, we demonstrate C. parvum-mediated METosis as P2X1-independent but as an MCT-dependent defense mechanism under intestinal physioxia (5% CO2) conditions. METs findings suggest anti-cryptosporidial effects through parasite entrapment and inhibition of sporozoite excystation.

The Xingu River Basin (XRB) in the Brazilian Amazon region has a great relevance to the development of northern Brazil because of the Belo Monte hydropower plant and its crescent agribusiness expansion. This study aimed to evaluate the potential of the Lavras Simulation of the Hydrology (LASH) model to represent the main hydrological processes in the XRB and simulate the hydrological impacts in the face of land-use change scenarios. Following the trend of the most relevant agribusiness evolution in the XRB, four agribusiness scenarios (S) were structured considering the increase in grasslands (S1: 50% over the native forest; S2: 100% over the native forest) and soybean plantations (S3: 50% over the native forest; S4: 100% over native forest). Average hydrographs were simulated, and the frequency duration curves (FDC) and average annual values of the main hydrological components for each scenario were compared. The results showed that, in general, changes in land use based on deforestation in the XRB would lead to an increase in flood streamflow and a reduction in baseflow. The increases in direct surface runoff varied from 4.4% for S1 to 29.8% for S4 scenarios. The reduction in baseflow varied from −1.6% for S1 to −4.9% for S2. These changes were reduced when the entire XRB was analyzed, but notable for the sub-basins in its headwater region, where the scenarios were more effective.

Cascaded H-bridge drives require using a significant-size capacitor on each cell to deal with the oscillatory power generated by the H-bridge inverter in the DC-link. This results in a bulky cell with reduced reliability due to the circulating second harmonic current through the DC-link capacitors. In this article, a control strategy based on a finite control set model predictive control and a proportional-resonant controller is proposed to compensate for the oscillatory power required by the H-bridge inverter through the cell’s input rectifier. With the proposed strategy, a DC-link second harmonic free operation is achieved, allowing for the possibility of reducing the capacitor size and, in consequence, the cell dimensions. The feasibility of the proposed control scheme is verified by experimental results in one cell of a cascade H-bridge inverter achieving an operation with a capacitance 141 times smaller than required by conventional control approaches for the same voltage ripple.

Cryptosporidium parvum is a zoonotic-relevant parasite belonging to the phylum Alveolata (subphylum Apicomplexa). One of the most zoonotic-relevant etiologies of cryptosporidiosis is the species C. parvum, infecting humans, cattle and wildlife. C. parvum-infected intestinal mucosa as well as host cells infected in vitro have not yet been the subject of extensive biochemical investigation. Efficient treatment options or vaccines against cryptosporidiosis are currently not available. Human cryptosporidiosis is currently known as a neglected poverty-related disease (PRD), being potentially fatal in young children or immunocompromised patients. In this study, we used a combination of atmospheric pressure scanning microprobe matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization (AP-SMALDI) mass spectrometry imaging (MSI) and liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS/MS) to determine and locate molecular biomarkers in in vitro C. parvum-infected host cells as well as parasitized neonatal calf intestines. Sections of C. parvum-infected and non-infected host cell pellets and infected intestines were examined to determine potential biomarkers. Human ileocecal adenocarcinoma cells (HCT-8) were used as a suitable in vitro host cell system. More than a thousand different molecular signals were found in both positive- and negative-ion mode, which were significantly increased in C. parvum-infected material. A database search in combination with HPLC-MS/MS experiments was employed for the structural verification of markers. Our results demonstrate some overlap between the identified markers and data obtained from earlier studies on other apicomplexan parasites. Statistically relevant biomarkers were imaged in cell layers of C. parvum-infected and non-infected host cells with 5 µm pixel size and in bovine intestinal tissue with 10 µm pixel size. This allowed us to substantiate their relevance once again. Taken together, the present approach delivers novel metabolic insights on neglected cryptosporidiosis affecting mainly children in developing countries.

The raspberry (Rubus idaeus L.) fruit is characterized by its richness in functional molecules and high nutritional value, but the high rate of fruit softening limits its quality during postharvest. Raspberry drupelets have a particular ripening regulation, depending partially on the effect of ethylene produced from the receptacle. However, the possible role of abscisic acid (ABA) in the modulation of quality parameters during the ripening of raspberry is unclear. This study characterized the fruit quality-associated parameters and hormonal contents during fruit development in two seasons. The quality parameters showed typical changes during ripening: a drastic loss of firmness, increase in soluble solids content, loss of acidity, and turning to a red color from the large green stage to fully ripe fruit in both seasons. A significant increase in the ABA content was observed during the ripening of drupelets and receptacles, with the higher content in the receptacle of ripe and overripe stages compared to the large green stage. Moreover, identification of ABA biosynthesis-(9-cis-epoxycarotenoid dioxygenase/NCED) and ABA receptor-related genes (PYRs-like receptors) showed three genes encoding RiNCEDs and nine genes for RiPYLs. The expression level of these genes increased from the large green stage to the full-ripe stage, specifically characterized by a higher expression of RiNCED1 in the receptacle tissue. This study reports a consistent concomitant increase in the ABA content and the expression of RiNCED1, RiPYL1, and RiPYL8 during the ripening of the raspberry fruit, thus supporting the role for ABA signaling in drupelets.

Fungal extracellular vesicles (EVs) mediate intra- and interspecies communication and are critical in host–fungus interaction, modulating inflammation and immune responses. In this study, we evaluated the in vitro pro- and anti-inflammatory properties of Aspergillus fumigatus EVs over innate leukocytes. A. fumigatus EVs induced a partial proinflammatory response by macrophages, characterized by increased tumor necrosis factor-alpha production, and increased gene expression of induced nitric oxide synthase and adhesion molecules. EVs induce neither NETosis in human neutrophils nor cytokine secretion by peripheral mononuclear cells. However, prior inoculation of A. fumigatus EVs in Galleria mellonella larvae resulted in increased survival after the fungal challenge. Taken together, these findings show that A. fumigatus EVs play a role in protection against fungal infection, although they induce a partial pro-inflammatory response.

Members of the Candida haemulonii species complex are multidrug-resistant emergent yeast pathogens able to cause superficial and invasive infections in risk populations. Fungal extracellular vesicles (EVs) play a critical role in the pathogenicity and virulence of several species and may perform essential functions during infections, such as carrying virulence factors that behave in two-way communications with the host, affecting survival and fungal resistance. Our study aimed to describe EV production from Candida haemulonii var. vulnera and evaluate whether murine macrophage RAW 264.7 cells respond to their stimuli by generating an oxidative response after 24 h. For this purpose, reactive oxygen species detection assays demonstrated that high concentrations of yeast and EVs (1010 particles/mL) of Candida haemulonii did not change macrophage viability. However, the macrophages recognized these EVs and triggered an oxidative response through the classical NOX-2 pathway, increasing O2•− and H2O2 levels. However, this stress did not cause lipid peroxidation in the RAW 264.7 cells and neither lead to the activation of the COX-2–PGE2 pathway. Thus, our data suggest that low concentrations of C. haemulonii EVs are not recognized by the classical pathway of the oxidative burst generated by macrophages, which might be an advantage allowing the transport of virulence factors via EVs, not identified by the host immune system that could work as fine tube regulators during infections caused by C. haemulonii. In contrast, C. haemulonii var. vulnera and high EV concentrations activated microbicidal actions in macrophages. Therefore, we propose that EVs could participate in the virulence of the species and that these particles could be a source of antigens to be exploited as new therapeutic targets.

The adsorptive performance of mesoporous silica-based materials towards inorganic (metal ions) and organic (dyes) water pollutants was investigated. Mesoporous silica materials with different particle size, surface area and pore volume were prepared and tailored with different functional groups. These materials were then characterised by solid-state techniques, namely vibrational spectroscopy, elemental analysis, scanning electron microscopy and nitrogen adsorption–desorption isotherms, allowing the successful preparation and structural modifications of the materials to be confirmed. The influence of the physicochemical properties of the adsorbents towards the removal of metal ions (Ni2+, Cu2+ and Fe3+) and organic dyes (methylene blue and methyl green) from aqueous solutions was also investigated. The results reveal that the exceptionally high surface area and suitable ζ-potential of the nanosized mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNPs) seem to favour the adsorptive capacity of the material for both types of water pollutants. Kinetic studies were performed for the adsorption of organic dyes by MSNPs and large-pore mesoporous silica (LPMS), suggesting that the process follows a pseudo-second-order model. The recyclability along consecutive adsorption cycles and the stability of the adsorbents after use were also investigated, showing that the material can be reused. Current results show the potentialities of novel silica-based material as a suitable adsorbent to remove pollutants from aquatic matrices with an applicability to reduce water pollution.

The ability of dermatophytes to live in communities and resist antifungal drugs may explain treatment recurrence, especially in onychomycosis. Therefore, new molecules with reduced toxicity that target dermatophyte biofilms should be investigated. This study evaluated nonyl 3,4-dihydroxybenzoate (nonyl) susceptibility and mechanism of action on planktonic cells and biofilms of T. rubrum and T. mentagrophytes. Metabolic activities, ergosterol, and reactive oxygen species (ROS) were quantified, and the expression of genes encoding ergosterol was determined by real-time PCR. The effects on the biofilm structure were visualized using confocal electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). T. rubrum and T. mentagrophytes biofilms were susceptible to nonyl and resistant to fluconazole, griseofulvin (all strains), and terbinafine (two strains). The SEM results revealed that nonyl groups seriously damaged the biofilms, whereas synthetic drugs caused little or no damage and, in some cases, stimulated the development of resistance structures. Confocal microscopy showed a drastic reduction in biofilm thickness, and transmission electron microscopy results indicated that the compound promoted the derangement and formation of pores in the plasma membrane. Biochemical and molecular assays indicated that fungal membrane ergosterol is a nonyl target. These findings show that nonyl 3,4-dihydroxybenzoate is a promising antifungal compound.

This article compares the creep testing behavior of AISI 4340 high-strength steel in the as-received and coated conditions. The coating material used was a NiCrBSi self-fluxing alloy. The microstructural characterization was carried out using optical and scanning electron microscopy. The creep tests were conducted at a temperature of 550 °C and with loads of 200, 250, and 300 MPa. The microstructure analysis of the deposited layer revealed some inclusions, very low porosity, and good adhesion to the substrate. The results of the creep tests indicated a decrease in the time to rupture under loads of 250 and 300 MPa for the coated steel. At a load of 200 MPa, the coated steel presented longer times to rupture and higher yield strength, demonstrating an improvement over the uncoated steel under these test condition. The fracture surface inspection showed a failure by a ductile fracture in both samples, with and without coating.

The systems used to distribute electricity are currently undergoing a series of changes that are aiding in the development of smart grids

Various studies have shown that the transmission and passage of alien and native pathogens play a critical role in the establishment process of an invasive species and its further spread. Egyptian geese (Alopochen aegyptiaca) are neozotic birds on various continents. They live not only in the countryside near fresh water bodies but also in urban habitats in Central Europe with close contact to humans and their pets. Although their rapid distribution in Europe is widely debated, scientific studies on the anthropozoonotic risks of the population and studies on the present endoparasites in Egyptian geese are rare worldwide. In the present study, 114 shot Egyptian geese and 148 non-invasively collected faecal samples of wild Egyptian geese from 11 different Federal States in Germany were examined. A total of 13 metazoan endoparasite species in 12 different genera were identified. The main endoparasites found were Hystrichis tricolor, Polymorphus minutus, and, in lesser abundance, Cloacotaenia sp. and Echinuria uncinata. Adult stages of Echinostoma revolutum, an anthropozoonotic heteroxenic trematode, were found in 7.9% of the animals examined postmortem. This species was additionally identified by molecular analysis. Although Egyptian geese live in communities with native waterfowl, it appears that they have a lower parasitic load in general. The acquisition of generalistic parasites in an alien species and the associated increased risk of infection for native species is known as “spill-back” and raises the question of impacts on native waterfowl. Differences between animals from rural populations and urban populations were observed. The present study represents the first large-scale survey on gastrointestinal parasites of free-ranging Egyptian geese.

Xiphidium caeruleum Aubl. is traditionally used in Cuba as an analgesic, anti-inflammatory, antilithiatic and diuretic remedy. Here we studied the pharmacognostic parameters of the leaves of X. caeruleum, the preliminary phytochemical composition, diuretic activity and acute oral toxicity of the aqueous extracts from the leaves of plants collected in the vegetative (VE) and flowering (FE) stages. The morphological characteristics and physicochemical parameters of leaves and extracts were determined. The phytochemical composition was assessed by phytochemical screening, TLC, UV, IR and HPLC/DAD profiles. The diuretic activity was evaluated in Wistar rats and compared to furosemide, hydrochlorothiazide and spironolactone. Epidermal cells, stomata and crystals were observed on the leaf surface. Phenolic compounds were identified as the main metabolites, including phenolic acids (gallic, caffeic, ferulic and cinnamic acids) and flavonoids (catechin, kaempferol-3-O-glucoside and quercetin). VE and FE showed diuretic activity. The activity of VE was similar to furosemide, and the activity of FE resembled spironolactone. No acute oral toxicity was observed. The presence of flavonoids and phenols in VE and FE may explain at least in part the traditional use and provide some insight into the reported ethnomedical use as a diuretic. Because of the differences in polyphenol profiles between VE and FE, further studies should be carried out to standardize the harvesting and extraction conditions in order to use X. caeruleum leaf extract as herbal medicine.

Along with society’s development, transportation has become a key factor in human daily life, increasing the number of vehicles on the streets. Consequently, the task of finding free parking slots in metropolitan areas can be dramatically challenging, increasing the chance of getting involved in an accident and the carbon footprint, and negatively affecting the driver’s health. Therefore, technological resources to deal with parking management and real-time monitoring have become key players in this scenario to speed up the parking process in urban areas. This work proposes a new computer-vision-based system that detects vacant parking spaces in challenging situations using color imagery processed by a novel deep-learning algorithm. This is based on a multi-branch output neural network that maximizes the contextual image information to infer the occupancy of every parking space. Every output infers the occupancy of a specific parking slot using all the input image information, unlike existing approaches, which only use a neighborhood around every slot. This allows it to be very robust to changing illumination conditions, different camera perspectives, and mutual occlusions between parked cars. An extensive evaluation has been performed using several public datasets, proving that the proposed system outperforms existing approaches.

Software Defined Networking (SDN) is a communication alternative to increase the scalability and resilience of microgrid hierarchical control. The common architecture has a centralized and monolithic topology, where the controller is highly susceptible to latency problems, resiliency, and scalability issues. This paper proposes a novel and intelligent control network to improve the performance of microgrid communications, solving the typical drawback of monolithic SDN controllers. The SDN controller’s functionalities are segregated into microservices groups and distributed through a bare-metal Kubernetes cluster. Results are presented from PLECS hardware in the loop simulation to validate the seamless transition between standard hierarchical control to the SDN networked microgrid. The microservices significantly impact the performance of the SDN controller, decreasing the latency by 10.76% compared with a monolithic architecture. Furthermore, the proposed approach demonstrates a 42.23% decrease in packet loss versus monolithic topologies and a 53.41% reduction in recovery time during failures. Combining Kubernetes with SDN microservices can eliminate the single point of failure in hierarchical control, improve application recovery time, and enhance containerization benefits, including security and portability. This proposal represents a reference framework for future edge computing and intelligent control approaches in networked microgrids.

Neutralizing antibodies (nAbs) are a critical part of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) research as they are used to gain insight into the immune response to severe acute respiratory syndrome-related coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infections. Among the technologies available for generating nAbs, DNA-based immunization methods are an alternative to conventional protocols. In this pilot study, we investigated whether DNA-based immunization by needle injection in rabbits was a viable approach to produce a functional antibody response. We demonstrated that three doses of DNA plasmid carrying the gene encoding the full-length spike protein (S) or the receptor binding domain (RBD) of SARS-CoV-2 induced a time-dependent increase in IgG antibody avidity maturation. Moreover, the IgG antibodies displayed high cross neutralization by live SARS-CoV-2 and pseudoviruses neutralization assays. Thus, we established a simple, low cost and feasible DNA-based immunization protocol in rabbits that elicited high IgG avidity maturation and nAbs production against SARS-CoV-2, highlighting the importance of DNA-based platforms for developing new immunization strategies against SARS-CoV-2 and future emerging epidemics.

Fault detection and classification are crucial procedures for electric power distribution systems because they can minimize the occurrence of faults. The methods for fault detection and classification have become more problematic because of the significant expansion of distributed energy resources in distribution systems and the change in their currents due to the action of short-circuiting. In this context, to fill this gap, this study presents a robust methodology for short-circuit fault detection and classification with the insertion of distributed generation units. The proposal methodology progresses in two stages: in the former stage, the detection is based on the continuous analysis of three-phase currents, whose characteristics are extracted through maximal overlap discrete wavelet transform. In the latter stage, the classification is based on three fuzzy inference systems to identify the phases with disturbance. The short-circuit type is identified by counting the shorted phases. The algorithm for short-circuit fault detection and classification is developed in MATLAB programming environment. The methodology is implemented in a modified IEEE 34-bus test system and modeled in ATPDraw with three scenarios with and without distributed generation units and considering the following parameters: fault type (single-phase, two-phase, and three-phase), angle of incidence, fault resistance (high impedance fault and low impedance fault), fault location bus, and distributed generation units (synchronous generators and photovoltaic panels). The accuracy is greater than 94.9% for the detection and classification of short-circuit faults for more than 20,000 simulated cases.

In tropical countries, clinical bovine babesiosis is a tick-borne disease primarily caused by Babesia bovis and Babesia bigemina. Here, we investigated 11 cattle with presumptive diagnosis of clinical babesiosis in Boyolali district, Central Java, Indonesia. The majority of the animals were anemic, as evidenced by lower hematocrit, hemoglobin concentration, and red blood cell counts than the normal ranges. Blood DNA was analyzed by a PCR assay targeting the 18S rRNA-ITS region of babesial origin, and the results confirmed that the cattle were infected with Babesia species. The sequencing and phylogenetic analyses demonstrated that the animals were infected with Babesia naoakii. This is the first report of B. naoakii in Indonesia and of B. naoakii-induced clinical bovine babesiosis outside of Sri Lanka. B. naoakii causes a persistent infection, as indicated by positive PCR results for serial blood samples of the circulatory system taken two weeks after treatment. Consequently, subclinical or newly recovered cattle may serve as potential intermediate hosts and infect ticks as definitive hosts to complete the life cycle. To identify potential tick vectors, we collected ticks from cattle, including 11 animals with clinical babesiosis. Based on the morphology and the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (COX1) of collected ticks, we found that all of the collected ticks were Haemaphysalis bispinosa, identifying this tick species as a potential vector of B. naoakii in Indonesia. In this study, the evaluation of local farmers’ awareness and practices regarding tick-borne diseases is presented, as disease prevention is also reliant on the implementation of strategies for vector control. Since livestock activities in Java represent the country’s busiest animal trade, thereby the spread of disease to other regions is possible through anthropogenic factors. In conclusion, B. naoakii is a causative pathogen of clinical bovine babesiosis autochthonously occurred in this report and further research on B. naoakii-infection is required in other regions of the country. The prompt treatment of the disease seemed crucial for animal survival, which implies the necessity of early diagnosis and a sensitive detection method.

As a consequence of the megadrought in Central Chile, it is expected that most of the distribution of woody species will be narrowed in the northern limits because of restrictions imposed by soil matric potential on seed germination. In this study, we analyzed the effect of the soil matric potential on seed germination and initial recruitment of the sclerophyllous species Prosopis chilensis, Quillaja saponaria and Cryptocarya alba from contrasting geographic origins (i.e., seed sources). We evaluated the germination capacity (%) under different matric potentials (i.e., 0, −6, −33, −750 and −1250 kPa) for 100 days. Soil matric potential of −1250 kPa negatively affected the germination capacity of the three species. P. chilensis seeds stopped germinating under soil matric potential close to −1200 kPa, whereas in Q. saponaria and C. alba the complete inhibition of germination was under −1000 kPa. Seed sources also differed in their germination capacity by soil matric potential: northern seed sources of P. chilensis germinated with the lowest soil matric potential. There was no clear trend in Q. saponaria and C. alba, but in general, southern seed sources performed better than the northern ones. The results showed that Ѱm in the soil played an important role in the germinative capacity against different seed source origins, but not in soils with a north–south gradient.

The development of immunosensors to detect antibodies or antigens has stood out in the face of traditional methods for diagnosing emerging diseases such as the one caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus. The present study reports the construction of a simplified electrochemical immunosensor using a graphene-binding peptide applied as a recognition site to detect SARS-CoV-2 antibodies. A screen-printed electrode was used for sensor preparation by adding a solution of peptide and reduced graphene oxide (rGO). The peptide-rGO suspension was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Raman spectroscopy, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). The electrochemical characterization (electrochemical impedance spectroscopy—EIS, cyclic voltammetry—CV and differential pulse voltammetry—DPV) was performed on the modified electrode. The immunosensor response is based on the decrease in the faradaic signal of an electrochemical probe resulting from immunocomplex formation. Using the best set of experimental conditions, the analytic curve obtained showed a good linear regression (r2 = 0.913) and a limit of detection (LOD) of 0.77 μg mL−1 for antibody detection. The CV and EIS results proved the efficiency of device assembly. The high selectivity of the platform, which can be attributed to the peptide, was demonstrated by the decrease in the current percentage for samples with antibody against the SARS-CoV-2 S protein and the increase in the other antibodies tested. Additionally, the DPV measurements showed a clearly distinguishable response in assays against human serum samples, with sera with a response above 95% being considered negative, whereas responses below this value were considered positive. The diagnostic platform developed with specific peptides is promising and has the potential for application in the diagnosis of other infections that lead to high antibody titers.

Since the discovery of antibiotics in the 20th century, they have been used to fight against infections. The overuse of antibiotics in the wider environment has resulted in the emergence of multidrug-resistant bacteria. In developing countries such as China and developed countries such as the USA, there is evidence of the high pervasiveness of antibiotic-resistant infections. However, the studies on the spread of antibiotic-resistant microorganisms that inform about the consequences are limited. The aim of our study was to analyze and compare antimicrobial resistance (AMR) identified in published research papers from that found in different food sources, which were published between 2012 and December 2021, covering most retail food items. Out of 132 research papers identified, 26 papers have met our strict criteria and are included in the qualitative and quantitative analysis. The selected papers led to 13,018 food samples, out of which 5000 samples were contaminated, including 2276 and 2724 samples from China and the USA, respectively. Meat, aquatic products, milk, and eggs show high to medium potential for AMR exposure to Gram-positive bacteria such as Staphylococcus, Enterococci, etc. and Gram-negative foodborne pathogens such as Campylobacter, Salmonella, Vibrio, etc. Most of the food samples show antibiotic resistance to β-lactams, tetracycline, quinolones, and aminoglycosides. Retail food products such as meat, sea food, and some other food products, as well as AMR genetics and technically important bacteria, are proposed to be better merged with mitigation strategies and systematic One Health AMR surveillance to minimize the knowledge gaps and facilitate comprehensive AMR risk computation for the consumers.

Natural regeneration of recalcitrant-seeded tree species is strongly limited in Mediterranean-type climate zones due to increasing droughts imposed by climate change. Direct seeding can be a low-cost alternative to seedling establishment, but there is still limited information for some species. This study aimed to assess the effects of the seed source and forest cover on the germination and survival of the endemic Cryptocarya alba Mol. established through direct seeding. Three habitat types differing in forest cover were identified within the natural park Reserva Natural Altos de Cantillana, Metropolitan Region, Chile. The forest cover corresponded to open (canopy density 75%). All forest cover had C. alba as one of the dominant species. At each habitat type, 38 families from four seed sources (Cuesta La Dormida (CD), Antumapu (AN), Cantillana (CA, local seed source) and Cayumanque (CY)) were directly seeded. Germination (Germin) and survival (Surv) were evaluated weekly during one growing season. There were significant differences between seed sources in Germin and Surv, with means values varying from 7.8% to 37% for Germin and 0% to 20% for Surv. The local seed source CA had the highest values in both traits. A significant variation was also observed between families within seed sources only for Germin. The dense forest cover had the highest Germin (22%) and Surv (55%) results compared to the other forest cover types, which was partially associated with differences in soil moisture, temperature, and bulk density. Due to the most frequent droughts in these Mediterranean-type climate zones, the use of local seeds on dense forest cover is recommended for the direct seeding of the species in the initial recruitment.

Microcontact printing using PDMS embossing tools and its variations have aroused the interest of a wide spectrum of research fields, hence the feasibility of defining micro and nanoscale patterns. In this work, we have proposed and demonstrated a novel lithography method based on grayscale patterns printed in a flexographic photopolymer mold and transferred to epoxy resin and a single PDMS stamp to obtain different microprint pattern structures. The geometry of the patterns can be modified by adjusting the layout and grayscale of the stamp patterns. The functionality of this contact printing methodology was validated by generating human induced pluripotent stem cells (hiPSC) patterns. These specific micropatterns can be very useful for achieving complex differentiation in cell lines such as hiPSC. Microfabrication through the new technique provides a promising alternative to conventional lithography for constructing complex aligned surfaces; these structures could be used as components of biological patterns or microfluidic devices.

Prunus serotina is divided into five subspecies. Among these, P. serotina subsp. capuli, commonly known as capuli, is native to Central and South America. Its fruits are big, sweet, and consumed by locals in various forms, with the Ecuadorian Andes region providing the best fruit forms of capuli. The objective of this study was to characterize a collection of different genotypes of capuli’s fruit, and their endocarps, found growing in the wild in the Chimborazo, Tungurahua, and Cotopaxi provinces of Ecuador. The fruits were characterized for weight (11.7–50.3 g), diameter (12.4–21.7 mm), height (11.4–19.7 mm), and soluble solids content (SSC) (13.4–27.6 °Brix) across two years. Similarly, the endocarps’ diameters (7.5–12.2 mm) and heights (8.1–13.6 mm) were measured. Significant differences were found for all the fruit and endocarp variables studied. A multivariate analysis showed that all the fruit and endocarp size characteristics, except SSC, were positively correlated with each other within a season. No clear population differentiation was seen among the genotypes from different provinces, suggesting a lack of clear morphological differentiation. The future breeding and selection of a capuli with superior, commercial, large fruit and a high SSC shows great potential.

Anthocyanins are plant pigments derived from the phenylpropanoid pathway which are produced in many different species, contributing to defense against stresses by their antioxidant properties. Cultivated tomatoes cannot synthesize flavonoids; however, wild tomatoes such as Solanum chilense and Solanum lycopersicoides have anthocyanin pigmented skin. Other wild tomato species such as Solanum peruvianum have been poorly studied concerning anthocyanin accumulation in the fruit. This research is the first to address the regulation of anthocyanin biosynthesis mediated by drought stress and light radiation in S. peruvianum fruit. Transcript accumulation of SpAN2, encoding for a key MYB type transcription factor for the regulation of anthocyanin biosynthesis, was induced in the fruit of plants exposed to drought treatment. In addition, fruit peel accumulates a greater anthocyanin content in water deficit-treated plants. The expression of SpAN2 was also regulated according to sunlight exposure, reaching a higher expression during maximal daily UV radiation and under controlled UV-B treatments. Similar results were observed for the expression of the late flavonoid biosynthetic gene dihydroflavonol 4-reductase (SpDFR). These results suggest that SpAN2 and SpDFR are involved in anthocyanin biosynthesis under drought stress and UV radiation in S. peruvianum.

The Zika virus (ZIKV) is a great concern for global health due to its high transmission, including disseminating through blood, saliva, urine, semen and vertical transmission. In some cases, ZIKV has been associated with microcephaly, neurological disorders, and Guillain–Barré syndrome. There is no vaccine, and controlling the disease is a challenge, especially with the co-circulation of the Dengue virus, which causes a severe cross-reaction due to the similarity between the two arboviruses. Considering that electrochemical immunosensors are well-established, sensitive, and practical tools for diagnosis, in this study we developed a sensor platform with intrinsic redox activity that facilitates measurement readouts. Prussian blue (PB) has a great ability to form electrocatalytic surfaces, dispensing redox probe solutions in voltammetric measurements. Herein, PB was incorporated into a chitosan–carbon nanotube hybrid, forming a nanocomposite that was drop-casted on a screen-printed electrode (SPE). The immunosensor detected the envelope protein of ZIKV in a linear range of 0.25 to 1.75 µg/mL (n = 8, p < 0.01), with a 0.20 µg/mL limit of detection. The developed immunosensor represents a new method for electrochemical measurements without additional redox probe solutions, and it is feasible for application in point-of-care diagnosis.

Pollen plays an essential role in plant fertility by delivering the male gametes to the embryo sac before double fertilization. In several plant species, including Arabidopsis, C2H2-type zinc-finger transcription factors (TFs) have been involved in different stages of pollen development and maturation. ZINC FINGER of Arabidopsis thaliana 4 (AtZAT4) is homologous to such TFs and subcellular localization analysis has revealed that AtZAT4 is located in the nucleus. Moreover, analysis of AtZAT4 expression revealed strong levels of it in flowers and siliques, suggesting a role of the encoded protein in the regulation of genes that are associated with reproductive development. We characterized a T-DNA insertional heterozygous mutant Atzat4 (+/−). The relative gene expression analysis of Atzat4 (+/−) showed significant transcript reductions in flowers and siliques. Furthermore, the Atzat4 (+/−) phenotypic characterization revealed defects in the male germline, showing a reduction in pollen tube germination and elongation. Atzat4 (+/−) presented reduced fertility, characterized by a smaller silique size compared to the wild type (WT), and a lower number of seeds per silique. Additionally, seeds displayed lower viability and germination. Altogether, our data suggest a role for AtZAT4 in fertilization and seed viability, through the regulation of gene expression associated with reproductive development.
