This article presents an attempt to solve the problem of the formation of burrs and drilling caps in the process of drilling in difficult-to-cut materials, specifically in the titanium alloy Ti-6Al-4V. In order to eliminate these phenomena, a chamfer of specific length and angle was made on FANAR drill&rsquo, s margin. Taguchi and ANOVA methods were used to plan and analyze the experiment aimed at determining the optimal geometry of the modified drill. Chamfer with a length of 2 mm and an angle of 10&deg, was selected. In the next stage of research, the values of cutting forces and burr heights obtained during drilling with the original and modified drill were compared for three different feed rate values. It turned out that the introduced changes significantly reduced both the axial cutting force (22&ndash, 23%) and the height of burrs (10&ndash, 22%) and caused the complete elimination of the presence of drilling caps. Additionally, a positive correlation between the cutting force and the burr size was found.

Perforated steel plates with regularly shaped holes are already widely employed as steel dampers, which dissipate seismic energy through plastic deformation of steel. As a typical auxetic structure, two-dimensional (2D) re-entrant honeycomb configurations have characteristics of large deformation and good energy absorption. However, research on the effects of these configurations on the mechanical performance of steel is limited. This paper investigated the auxetic properties of perforated steel plates with re-entrant hexagon holes. Repetitive units are controlled by three parameters, hole ratio, re-entrant angle, and chamfer radius. Elastoplastic behavior and damage under large deformation were studied via tension tests and finite element (FE) analysis based on a micromechanics-based ductile fracture model. The effects of different parameters on mechanical properties of configurations were analyzed and discussed. The static performance of the perforated steel plates obtained in this study provides a good basis for its further dynamic study under large deformation.

This study aimed to conduct a stress analysis of four types of cervical finish lines in posterior all-ceramic crowns on the primary roots of molar teeth. Four different types of finish lines (shoulder 0.5 mm, feather-edged, chamfer 0.6 mm, and mini chamfer 0.4 mm) and two all-ceramic crown materials (zirconia and lithium disilicate) were used to construct eight finite element primary tooth models with full-coverage crowns. A load of 200 N was applied at two different loading angles (0&deg, and 15&deg, ) so as to mimic children&rsquo, s masticatory force and occlusal tendency. The maximum stress distribution from the three-dimensional finite element models was determined, and the main effect of each factor (loading type, material, and finish line types) was evaluated in terms of the stress values for all of the models. The results indicated that the loading type (90.25%) was the main factor influencing the maximum stress value of the primary root, and that the feather-edged margin showed the highest stress value (p = 0.002). In conclusion, shoulder and chamfer types of finish lines with a 0.4&ndash, 0.6 mm thickness are recommended for deciduous tooth preparation, according to the biomechanical analysis.

The effects of different tool edge geometries (hone and chamfer (T-land)) on quantitative measurement of end (exit) burr and chip segmentation (frequency and degree) in machining of AA2024-T351 are presented in this work. The finite element (FE) approach is adopted to perform cutting simulations for various combinations of cutting speed, feed, and tool edge geometries. Results show an increasing trend in degree of chip segmentation and end burr as hone edge tool radius or chamfer tool geometry macro parameters concerning chamfer length and chamfer angle increase. Conversely, the least effects for chip segmentation frequency have been figured out. Statistical optimization techniques, such as response surface methodology, Taguchi`s design of experiment, and analysis of variance (ANOVA), are applied to present predictive models, figure out optimum cutting parameters, and their significance and relative contributions to results of end burr and chip segmentation. Various numerical findings are successfully compared with experimental data. The ultimate goal is to help optimize tool edge design and select optimum cutting parameters for improved productivity.

The biaxial tensile testing of cruciform specimens is an effective way to create complex loading, and is a feasible experimental method for studying the subsequent yield behavior. However, relevant knowledge gaps still exist in the geometric design of miniaturized cruciform specimens which are applicable to test machines with maximum load less than 5000 N. The present work outlines the systematic investigations of the optimal design of the miniaturized cruciform specimen of a commercial pure titanium TA2 for biaxial tensile testing. Finite element modeling (FEM) coupled with the orthogonal design is employed to explore the influence of various geometric parameters, i.e., the thickness of the central gauge region, the width, the length, and the number of the slit, and the radius of the inner chamfer, on the stress distribution of the central gauge region. The optimal geometric design of the miniaturized cruciform specimen is successfully obtained, simultaneously considering the stress uniformity in the central gauge region and economic factors. The full-field strain distributions are also determined via the digital image correction (DIC) technique, which confirm the accuracy of the results achieved from FEM. This work provides a complete and reliable procedure for optimizing the geometry of miniaturized cruciform specimens, whose application can be expanded to other metals in the future.

This paper presents the findings of a study into how different inlet designs for stormwater culverts increase the discharge rate. The objective of the study was to develop improved inlet designs that could be retro-fitted to existing stormwater culvert structures in order to increase discharge capacity and allow for changing rainfall patterns and severe weather events that are expected as a consequence of climate change. Three different chamfer angles and a rounded corner were simulated with the software ANSYS Fluent, each of the shapes tested in five different sizes. Rounded and 45 ∘ chamfers at the inlet edge performed best, significantly increasing the flow rate, though the size of the configurations was a critical factor. Inlet angles of 30 ∘ and 60 ∘ caused greater turbulence in the simulations than did 45 ∘ and the rounded corner. The best performing shape of the inlet, the rounded corner, was tested in an experimental flume. The flume flow experiment showed that the optimal inlet configuration, a rounded inlet (radius = 1/5 culvert width) improved the flow rate by up to 20% under submerged inlet control conditions.

To our knowledge there is no data about the mechanical performance of indirect restoration adhesively cemented on teeth without an adequate build-up to provide the correct geometrical configuration. The aim of this study was to compare the fracture strength of human teeth restored with lithium disilicate onlays, with and without fiber post build-up. Methods: Twenty human mandibular molars were horizontally sectioned and divided into two groups (n = 10). No treatment was applied in group A. Teeth in group B were endodontically treated, built-up using fiber post and composite core and prepared with a circumferential chamfer providing a 1 mm circumferential ferrule. Lithium disilicate onlays were pressed and luted on teeth using dual-curing luting composite. Teeth were tested under static load. Failures were classified as restorable or not restorable. Failure loads were analyzed with one-way analysis of variance. Failure modes were compared using Pearson&rsquo, s Chi-square tests. Results: The mean fracture loads were 1383.5 N for group A and 1286.3 N for group B. No difference was found (p = 0.6). Ninety per cent of fractures were classified as not restorable in both groups, with no difference (p = 0.8). Conclusions: For teeth restored with adhesive procedures and lithium disilicate onlays, the presence of build-up with fiber post to provide retention and resistance form does not influence the fracture strength.
