Historic Building Information Modelling (HBIM) plays a pivotal role in heritage conservation endeavours, offering a robust framework for digitally documenting existing structures and supporting conservation practices. However, HBIM’s efficacy hinges upon the implementation of case-specific approaches to address the requirements and resources of each individual asset and context. This paper defines a flexible and generalisable workflow that encompasses various aspects (i.e., documentation, surveying, vulnerability assessment) to support risk-informed decision making in heritage management tailored to the peculiar conservation needs of the structure. This methodology includes an initial investigation covering historical data collection, metric and condition surveys and non-destructive testing. The second stage includes Finite Element Method (FEM) modelling and structural analysis. All data generated and processed are managed in a multi-purpose HBIM model. The methodology is tested on a relevant case study, namely, the church of Santa Ana in Seville, chosen for its historical significance, intricacy and susceptibility to seismic action. The defined level of detail of the HBIM model is sufficient to inform the structural analysis, being balanced by a more accurate representation of the alterations, through linked orthophotos and a comprehensive list of alphanumerical parameters. This ensures an adequate level of information, optimising the trade-off between model complexity, investigation time requirements, computational burden and reliability in the decision-making process. Field testing and FEM analysis provide valuable insight into the main sources of vulnerability in the building, including the connection between the tower and nave and the slenderness of the columns.

Bridges are critical components of transportation networks, and their conditions have effects on societal well-being, the economy, and the environment. Automation needs in inspections and maintenance have made structural health monitoring (SHM) systems a key research pillar to assess bridge safety/health. The last decade brought a boom in innovative bridge SHM applications with the rise in next-generation smart and mobile technologies. A key advancement within this direction is smartphones with their sensory usage as SHM devices. This focused review reports recent advances in bridge SHM backed by smartphone sensor technologies and provides case studies on bridge SHM applications. The review includes model-based and data-driven SHM prospects utilizing smartphones as the sensing and acquisition portal and conveys three distinct messages in terms of the technological domain and level of mobility: (i) vibration-based dynamic identification and damage-detection approaches; (ii) deformation and condition monitoring empowered by computer vision-based measurement capabilities; (iii) drive-by or pedestrianized bridge monitoring approaches, and miscellaneous SHM applications with unconventional/emerging technological features and new research domains. The review is intended to bring together bridge engineering, SHM, and sensor technology audiences with decade-long multidisciplinary experience observed within the smartphone-based SHM theme and presents exemplary cases referring to a variety of levels of mobility.

Aiming at the challenges to accurately simulate complex friction models, link dynamics, and part uncertainty for high-precision robot-based manufacturing considering mechanical deformation and resonance, this study proposes a high-precision dynamic identification method with a double encoder. Considering the influence of the dynamic model of the manipulator on its control accuracy, a three-iterative global parameter identification method based on the least square method and GMM (Gaussian Mixture Model) under the optimized excitation trajectory is proposed. Firstly, a bidirectional friction model is constructed to avoid using residual torque to reduce the identification accuracy. Secondly, the condition number of the block regression matrix is used as the optimization objective. Finally, the joint torque is theoretically identified with the weighted least squares method. A nonlinear model distinguishing between high and low speeds was established to fit the nonlinear friction of the robot. By converting the position and velocity of the motor-side encoder to the linkage side using the deceleration ratio, the deformation quantity could be calculated based on the discrepancy between theoretical and actual values. The GMM algorithm is used to compensate the uncertainty torque that was caused by model inaccuracy. The effectiveness of the proposed method is verified by a simulation and experiment on a 6-DoF industrial robot. Results prove that the proposed method can enhance the online torque estimation performance by up to 20%.

As ageing structures and infrastructures become a global concern, structural health monitoring (SHM) is seen as a crucial tool for their cost-effective maintenance. Promising results obtained for modern and conventional constructions suggested the application of SHM to historical masonry buildings as well. However, this presents peculiar shortcomings and open challenges. One of the most relevant aspects that deserve more research is the optimisation of the sensor placement to tackle well-known issues in ambient vibration testing for such buildings. The present paper focuses on the application of optimal sensor placement (OSP) strategies for dynamic identification in historical masonry buildings. While OSP techniques have been extensively studied in various structural contexts, their application in historical masonry buildings remains relatively limited. This paper discusses the challenges and opportunities of OSP in this specific context, analysing and discussing real-world examples, as well as a numerical benchmark application to illustrate its complexities. This article aims to shed light on the progress and issues associated with OSP in masonry historical buildings, providing a detailed problem formulation, identifying ongoing challenges and presenting promising solutions for future improvements.

In this study, modal and structural identification of a historic masonry bell tower in Čuntići, Croatia, damaged during the recent Petrinja earthquake, was performed. The results of the ambient vibration tests (AVT) and operational modal analysis (OMA) were used to update the finite element numerical model of the bell tower. Three modes were experimentally determined: the first two were bending modes (f1 = 4.395 Hz and f2 = 4.639 Hz), and the third was a torsional mode (f3 = 10.303 Hz). The experimentally determined and the originally calculated (preliminary NM) modal shapes agreed well, but in terms of modal frequencies, the correlation was poor. After model updating, some structural parameters were identified, and a reliable finite element numerical model was established. The proposed method can provide a reliable evaluation of the structural parameters of historic masonry buildings.

The preservation of trees in urban and archeological areas is a theme of particular relevance. Modern systems of monitoring, together with approaches for deriving the main characteristics of trees influencing their response toward extreme events, are nowadays at the basis of a growing number of studies. The aim of the present paper is the dynamic identification of trees carried out by employing an approach which combines a simple data-acquisition system, direct and ambient sources of excitation, and different data-processing methods. In particular, using a single accelerometer placed at different sections of the trunk and considering excitations induced by either pulling tests or ambient vibrations, the derivation of the main frequencies and levels of modal damping characterizing the dynamic response of a sour cherry tree (Prunus cerasus) is carried out. A finite element model of the tree is also carried out to support the validation of the proposed approach and further analyze the derived outcomes. The obtained results underline the feasibility of the proposed approach in deriving information useful for assessing the behavior of trees toward dynamic actions and, consequently, of particular relevance for the identification of possible damages induced by variations in terms of dynamic characteristics (frequencies) and damping.

Accurate interaction force estimation can play an important role in optimizing human–robot interaction in an exoskeleton. In this work, we propose a novel approach for the system identification of exoskeleton dynamics in the presence of interaction forces as a whole multibody system without imposing any constraints on the exoskeleton dynamics. We hung the exoskeleton through a linear spring and excited the exoskeleton joints with chirp commands while measuring the exoskeleton–environment interaction force. Several structures of neural networks were trained to model the exoskeleton passive dynamics and estimate the interaction force. Our testing results indicated that a deep neural network with 250 neurons and 10 time–delays could obtain a sufficiently accurate estimation of the interaction force, resulting in an RMSE of 1.23 on Z–normalized applied torques and an adjusted R2 of 0.89.

Most existing masonry buildings were built without following code regulations for seismic criteria. Hence, their performance compared to the demands of the current codes, for both seismic and static actions, could be very low. In engineering practice, strengthening interventions can be pursued at different levels, based on qualitative assessments of masonry structures. Firstly, the structures are evaluated through in situ inspections. Then, based on the structural system of the building a strengthening design is proposed. The design can be targeted at guaranteeing a box behavior of structures acting through macro-elements, or at strengthening the in-plane capacity of piers and spandrels. However, lower cognitive levels may drive inaccurate impressions about the capacity of structures, leading to unreliable strengthening solutions. While in some cases the confidence factor could underestimate the effects of the reinforcements, in other cases lower knowledge levels could lead to incorrect reinforcements that do not provide helpful solutions. In this paper, the issues concerning the strengthening design of masonry structures are presented and discussed with regard to an existing building. The construction is a 20th century masonry building used as a nursing home for elderly persons. The study follows a knowledge-based procedure where, after achievement of the highest knowledge level and the proposal of compatible and effective strengthening interventions, the analysis of the potential effects of achieving lower knowledge levels is discussed both in terms of vulnerability computations and in terms of strengthening effectiveness. Regarding vulnerability assessment, a lower knowledge level leads to non-conservative results, with an increase in the estimated capacity of around 80%. Critical evaluation of the different configurations for the case study makes it clear that for the considered masonry building the mortar investigation represented the most important parameter to be investigated. The proposal of strengthening interventions before assessment of this parameter may lead to ineffective improvements resulting in index values lower than 0.60. The study represents the opportunity to assess comparisons in the setting of different investigation strategies and their effect on the definition of the strengthening solutions.

This work contemplates the application of non-destructive techniques, sonic and environmental vibration tests, on a set of soil-cement compressed earth blocks reinforced masonry walls, which were built in laboratory, under the project SHS-Multirisk. The present work constitutes a comparative study that aimed at verifying the reliability of the sonic test method in masonry characterization and in testing a methodology of combined tests for structural assessment. For that purpose, a numerical model of the walls was developed and calibrated with the mechanical properties that were calculated from the sonic tests data. The results of the simulation of the numerical model were compared with the results of the environmental vibration tests, which enabled to reach a correlation between the frequencies, as well as enabling the indirect sonic tests, which were performed in the vertical direction, to result in an accurate prediction of the Young modulus to be used in the numerical models.

The implementation of condition monitoring for damage identification and the generation of a reliable digital twin are essential elements of preventive conservation. The application of this promising approach to Cultural Heritage (CH) sites is deemed truly beneficial, constituting a minimally invasive mitigation strategy and a cost-effective decision-making tool. In this light, the present work focuses on establishing an informative virtual model as a platform for the conservation of the monastery of Santa Maria de Salzedas, a CH building located in the north of Portugal. The platform is the first step towards the generation of the digital twin and is populated with existing documentation as well as new information collected within the scope of an inspection and diagnosis programme. At this stage, the virtual model encompasses the main cloister, whose structural condition and safety raised concerns in the past and required the implementation of urgent remedial measures. In the definition of a vibration-based condition monitoring strategy for the south wing of the cloister, five modes were identified by carrying out an extensive dynamic identification. Nonetheless, significant challenges emerged due to the low amplitude of the ambient-induced vibrations and the intrusiveness of the activities. To this end, a data-driven Optimal Sensor Placement (OSP) approach was followed, testing and comparing five heuristic methods to define a good trade-off between the number of sensors and the quality of the collected information. The results showed that these algorithms for OSP allow the selection of sensor locations with good signal strength.

This article presents a novel methodology to extract the bridge frequencies from the vibrations recorded on train-mounted sensors. Continuous wavelet transform is used to distinguish the bridge frequencies from the other peaks that are visible in the Fourier amplitude spectrum of the accelerations recorded on train bogies. The efficacy of the proposed method is demonstrated through numerical case studies. For this, a detailed three-dimensional finite element model that can capture the vibration characteristics of the bridge, track, and train is created, and each component of the model is separately validated. The train model used is a three-dimensional multi-degree-of-freedom system that can simulate the pitching and rolling behavior. The train was then virtually driven over the bridge at different speeds and under varying track irregularities to evaluate the robustness of the proposed method in extracting bridge frequencies from train-mounted sensors under different conditions. The proposed methodology is shown to be capable of identifying bridge modal frequencies even for aggressive track irregularity profiles and relatively high speeds of trains.

Damage to devices installed in electric substations, which have shown vulnerable behaviour under strong earthquakes in the last decades, may endanger power delivery in the emergency phases during and after an earthquake. Within seismic risk assessment of power networks, the definition of the fragility functions of electric equipment is paramount. However, in the current literature the availability of such fragility models for some specific electric substation components, including instrument transformers, is relatively limited, this being the reason behind the deployment of the current experimental and numerical research endeavour. Two voltage transformers and two current transformers having different system voltage levels (respectively in the high voltage HV and extra-high voltage EHV ranges) were subjected to shake table tests, and the experimental results were used to calibrate the corresponding 3D numerical models developed in OpenSees. A number of nonlinear dynamic analyses carried out within a multiple-stripe analysis (MSA) framework allowed the derivation of 16 fragility curves for the four transformers in both stand-alone and elevated/supported configurations, considering also two different soil types. Based on the derived curves, one of the voltage transformers is expected to experience light or negligible damage due to earthquake shaking, owing to its high resonance frequencies (and hence stiffness), whilst the remaining three devices may suffer moderate damage under medium to strong shaking intensities; however, their seismic risk is in effect mitigated by the presence of the typically employed supporting column. Comparison against models available in the literature lent valuable reassurance on the adequacy of the employed methodology and the reliability of the derived fragility curves.

The present paper showcases the work carried out as part of the seismic retrofit of the Ottoman fortress of Gjirokastra, a UNESCO World Heritage site located in Albania. The need for strengthening and retrofitting the structure stems from the fact that it is situated in a region of high seismicity and showed signs of structural distress at the time of investigation. The hill on which the castle is built also has stability issues. The seismic retrofit focused on a damaged stone masonry tower of the fortress and was designed following a comprehensive methodology for the inspection, diagnosis and geotechnical and structural analyses. Through the use of non-destructive tests, the existing soil conditions, the material properties and composition and the dynamic behaviour of the tower were assessed. Nonlinear finite element analysis was used to establish the cause of the existing damage and to determine the most effective strengthening solutions. The findings of the investigation revealed potential causes of the observed damage as well as the need to carry out retrofitting works at the tower beyond ground improvement solutions to bring the performance of the structure up to the code-specified level. This paper highlights the importance of planning and coordination between all the relevant disciplines involved in the project, so that apt inspection and diagnostic tools can be used to fill in the gaps where information is missing and to design optimal and integrated structural interventions in historic structures. Satisfactory seismic performance can be obtained by using a combination of retrofitting techniques, which specifically target the weak elements identified via the analyses.

Experimental and numerical studies for the structural and vibration serviceability assessment of a historic suspension footbridge adopting non-invasive surveys and low-cost equipment are presented. Field surveys have been carried out to determine geometric properties, ambient vibration tests have been performed to estimate the dynamic properties, and the dynamic response of the footbridge under the action of a single crossing pedestrian has been recorded. Based on field surveys, a 3D Finite Element model was built and was then calibrated against ambient vibration test results. The experimentally-measured maximum acceleration under the action of one crossing pedestrian is compared with the ones obtained numerically and analytically. Furthermore, vibration serviceability assessment under multi-pedestrian loading is carried out, adopting the simplified procedure recommended by a recent guideline. Results show that low-cost non-invasive dynamic testing is suitable to correctly identify the footbridge vertical natural frequencies and mode shapes, including higher-order ones, and to draw considerations about the state of degradation of the structure. Moreover, the level of vibration under the action of a single pedestrian can be estimated with sufficient accuracy using a simplified loading model, provided that the modal damping ratio is properly tuned.

For underwater gliders (UGs), high trajectory accuracy is an important factor in improving the observation of ocean phenomena. In this paper, a novel method of trajectory optimization is proposed to increase the trajectory accuracy of UGs, which is approximately based on the nonlinear dynamic model, rather than the linearization model. Firstly, a dynamic model of UGs is established to analyze the effect of the input parameters on the trajectory error, based on some approximate models that replaced the dynamic model due to its strong nonlinearity. Then, an identification strategy for the trajectory error is proposed, and the trajectory optimization strategy is analyzed while considering gliding range loss and observation distance loss. Finally, the identification strategy and trajectory optimization strategy proposed in this paper are verified by a sea trial of Petrel-L. The dynamic model, identification strategy, and optimization strategy are appropriate for other UGs.

This paper proposes a method to experimentally identify the main modal parameters, i.e., natural frequencies and damping ratios, of an aerostatic spindle for printed board circuit drilling. A variety of methods is applied to the impulse-response function of the spindle in the presence of zero rotational speed and different supply pressures. Moreover, the paper describes the non-linear numerical model of the spindle, which consists of a four-degree-of-freedom (DOF) rigid and unsymmetrical rotor supported by two aerostatic bearings. The main goal of the work is to validate the developed non-linear numerical model through the proposed identification procedure and the performed experimental tests. The comparison proves satisfactory, and the possible sources of uncertainty are conjectured.

This paper focuses on the dynamic behaviour of a low-rise masonry building representing the Italian residential heritage through experimental and numerical analyses. The authors discuss an application of combined Operational Modal Analysis and Finite Element Model updating for indirect estimation of the structural parameters. Two ambient vibration tests were carried out to estimate the structure’s dynamic behaviour in operational conditions. The first experimental setup consisted of accelerometers gathered in a row along the first floor to characterize the local dynamic of the floor. Conversely, the second setup had the accelerometers placed at the building’s corners to characterize the global dynamics. The outcomes of the first setup were used to estimate the mechanical parameters of the floor, while the ones form the second were used to characterize the mechanical parameters of the masonry piers. Therefore, two finite element models were implemented: (i) a single beam with an equivalent section of the floor to grasp the local behaviour of the investigated horizontal structure; (ii) an equivalent frame model of the entire building to characterise the global dynamic behaviour. The model updating process was developed in two phases to seize local and global dynamic responses. The updated numerical model formed the basis for a sensitivity analysis using the modelling parameters. The authors chose to delve into the influence of the floor on the dynamic behaviour of low-rise masonry buildings. With this aim, non-linear dynamic analyses were carried out under different mechanical characteristics of floors, expressing the scatter for ordinary masonry buildings. The displacements’ trends along the height of the building evidenced the notable role of the floor’s stiffness in the non-linear dynamic behaviour of the building. Lastly, the authors derived the fragility curves predicting the seismic performance in failure probability under a highly severe damage state.

Dynamic parameters are crucial for the definition of high-fidelity models of industrial manipulators. However, since they are often partially unknown, a mathematical model able to identify them is discussed and validated with the UR3 and the UR5 collaborative robots from Universal Robots. According to the acquired experimental data, this procedure allows for reducing the error on the estimated joint torques of about 90% with respect to the one obtained using only the information provided by the manufacturer. The present research also highlights how changes in the robot operating conditions affect its dynamic behavior. In particular, the identification process has been applied to a data set obtained commanding the same trajectory multiple times to both robots under rising joints temperatures. Average reductions of the viscous friction coefficients of about 20% and 17% for the UR3 and the UR5 robots, respectively, have been observed. Moreover, it is shown how the manipulator mounting configuration affects the number of the base dynamic parameters necessary to properly estimate the robots’ joints torques. The ability of the proposed model to take into account different mounting configurations is then verified by performing the identification procedure on a data set generated through a digital twin of a UR5 robot mounted on the ceiling.

An experimental investigation on the accuracy of dynamically determined tensile force in tie-rods by applying the interferometric radar technique was performed. Tie-rods were used in historical masonry constructions for absorbing thrusts of arches and vaults, and the radar interferometry may represent a fast and easy non-destructive approach for the tensile force identification in the occasion of structural assessments. Laboratory dynamic tests on a cable under a known tensile force show that, provided that a suitable dynamic identification model is used, tensile force evaluations made stating from interferometric radar measurements were characterized by a very good accuracy (mean error in the tensile force estimation less than 2%), comparable with evaluations made starting from accelerometric measurements. In particular, the dynamic identification model considered is a modified version of a model proposed in the literature. The influence on the accuracy in the determination of the tensile force of some features of the experimental setup, like, e.g., the employ of corner reflectors, is discussed.

Masonry towers, located in seismic zones, are vulnerable and prone to damages up to compromise their stability. The scatter of data on the mechanical properties of masonry, geometry and boundary conditions determine a lack of building knowledge on their expected behaviour. Therefore the assessment of the seismic capacity represents a critical task. This paper contributes to the issue of seismic analysis of masonry towers, focusing a meaningful case study: the St.Silvestro belfry in L’Aquila, Italy. The tower, severely damaged by the 2009 earthquake sequence, underwent extensive restoration works, endeavoured to mitigate its vulnerability. The observed seismic damage, the performed no-destructive testing campaign and the accomplished rehabilitation measures are described in the paper. The authors appraised the actual seismic performances of the St.Silvestro belfry, reinforced by the last restoration works. At first, the Operational Modal Analysis (OMA) is carried out to enhance building knowledge. In a second step, a refined finite element model is calibrated on the results from OMA to seize the actual dynamic response. Ultimately, by using the updated finite element model, the authors estimate the fragility curves in terms of peak ground acceleration using truncated incremental dynamic analyses.

The paper covers the application of Radio Frequency IDentification (RFID) technology in road traffic management with regard to vehicle identification. Various infrastructure configurations for Automated Vehicle Identification (AVI) have been presented, including configurations that can be used in urban traffic as part of the Smart City concept. In order to describe the behavior of multiple identifications of moving vehicles, an operation model of the dynamic identification using RFID is described. While it extends the definition of the correct work zone, this paper introduces the concept of dividing the zone into sections corresponding to so-called inventory rounds. The system state is described using a set of matrices in which unread, read, and lost transponders are recorded in subsequent rounds and sections. A simplified algorithm of the dynamic object identification system was also proposed. The results of the simulations and lab experiments show that the efficiency of mobile object identification is conditioned by the parameters of the communication protocol, the speed of movement, and the number of objects.

The authors investigated the dynamic behaviour of the San Silvestro belfry in L’Aquila (Italy). The 2009 earthquake in L’Aquila caused severe damages to the entire masonry complex. Extensive rehabilitation works, ended in 2019, repaired the structure and enhanced its seismic safety. In this paper, the authors discuss three aspects typical of masonry towers by interpreting the outcomes of Operational Modal Analysis carried out on December 2019: the interactions between the tower and the masonry complex, the dynamic effects of the bell, and the seismic reliability assessment of the tower. Specifically, the experimental mode shapes drive the estimation of an equivalent cross-section, whose principal axes of inertia match with the directions of oscillation of the mode shapes, and the parameters of an equivalent cantilevered beam roughly representative of the tower dynamics. In a second step, a two-degrees-of-freedom analytical model simulates the dynamic coupling between the tower and the more massive bell. The response of the system to a set of seven strong-motion earthquakes yields the assessment of the bell effects over the seismic performance of the masonry tower.

The dynamic identification of the modal parameters of a structure, in order to gain control of its functionality under operating conditions, is currently under discussion from a scientific and technical point of views. The experimental observations obtained through structural health monitoring (SHM) are a useful calibration reference of numerical models (NMs). In this paper, the procedures for the identification of modal parameters in historical bell towers using a stochastic subspace identification (SSI) algorithm are presented. Then, NMs are manually calibrated on the identification’s results. Finally, the applicability of a genetic algorithm for the automatic calibration of the elastic parameters is considered with the aim of searching for the properties of the autochthonous material, in order to reduce modelling error following the model assurance criterion (MAC). In this regard, several material values on the same model are examined to see how to approach the evolution and the distribution of these features, comparing the characterization proposed by the genetic algorithm with the results considered by the manual iterative procedure.

Tie-rods are structural elements of crucial importance in ancient buildings to ensure structural integrity and safety, so the assessment of their effectiveness via an estimation of the axial load is of great importance. Dynamic techniques are often employed using accelerometers to measure the frequency response of the tie-rods. In this work, the frequency response of tie-rods is obtained with acoustic recording, thus introducing general-purpose microphones to potentially replace more expensive and complex sensors in this application. Two microphones were tested, one of known technical characteristics, and a second for which they were unknown. A procedure was designed to overcome the technical limitations of the latter, and two experimental campaigns were conducted to test the proposed method.

This paper reports on the dynamic characterisation of a Reinforced Concrete (RC) stadium grandstand module for the Sporting Stadium in Lisbon. To this aim, a three-dimensional (3D) Finite-Element (FE) numerical model, implemented according to the technical drawings of the structure, is first presented to provide preliminary estimates of the expected modal characteristics for the examined structural system. Ambient vibration tests are then carried out on the same grandstand, and used to extract the natural frequencies and vibration modes of the system, according to conventional state-of-the-art output-only modal parameter identification techniques. A sensitivity investigation and FE model updating study is hence presented for the grandstand, giving evidence of the major influencing parameters and key input data for the numerical fitting of the experimental modal testing results.

In recent years, thanks to the simple and yet efficient design, Micro Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS) accelerometers have proven to offer a suitable solution for Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) in civil engineering applications. Such devices are typically characterised by high portability and durability, as well as limited cost, hence resulting in ideal tools for applications in buildings and infrastructure. In this paper, original self-made MEMS sensor prototypes are presented and validated on the basis of preliminary laboratory tests (shaking table experiments and noise level measurements). Based on the well promising preliminary outcomes, their possible application for the dynamic identification of existing, full-scale structural assemblies is then discussed, giving evidence of their potential via comparative calculations towards past literature results, inclusive of both on-site, Experimental Modal Analysis (EMA) and Finite Element Analytical estimations (FEA). The full-scale experimental validation of MEMS accelerometers, in particular, is performed using, as a case study, the cable-stayed bridge in Pietratagliata (Italy). Dynamic results summarised in the paper demonstrate the high capability of MEMS accelerometers, with evidence of rather stable and reliable predictions, and suggest their feasibility and potential for SHM purposes.

In bridge health monitoring, tiltmeters have been used for measuring rotation and curvature; however, their application in dynamic parameter identification has been lacking. This study installed fiber Bragg grating (FBG) tiltmeters on the bearings of a bridge and monitored the dynamic rotational angle. The dynamic features, including natural frequencies and mode shapes, have been identified successfully. The innovation presented in this paper is the first-time use of FBG tiltmeter readings to identify the natural frequencies of a long-span steel girder bridge. The identified results have been verified using a bridge finite element model. This paper introduces a new method for the dynamic monitoring of a bridge using FBG tiltmeters. Limitations and future research directions are also discussed in the conclusion.
