With the development of science and technology, wearable electronics are increasingly widely used in medical, environmental monitoring, and other fields. Thus, the demand for flexible electrodes is increasing. The two-dimensional material Ti3C2Tx has attracted much attention in the manufacture of flexible electrodes due to its excellent mechanical and electrical properties. However, the brittleness of pure Ti3C2Tx films has become a major obstacle for their use as flexible electrodes in wearable devices. Therefore, solving the brittleness problem of flexible electrodes based on Ti3C2Tx while maintaining the excellent performance of Ti3C2Tx has become an urgent problem. To solve this problem, Ti3C2Tx was compounded with waterborne polyurethane (WPU), and a Ti3C2Tx-WPU composite film with a hierarchical structure was constructed by evaporation-assisted self-assembly. The Ti3C2Tx-WPU composite film not only retains the excellent electrical conductivity of Ti3C2Tx (100 S m−1) but also has flexibility (20 MJ m−3). Furthermore, the Ti3C2Tx-WPU composite film is applied to functional devices such as contact pressure sensors and non-contact proximity sensors. Finally, the Ti3C2Tx-WPU composite film wearable device demonstrates its practical application potential in the field of wearable devices.

Background: Plastic-based products are ubiquitous due to their tremendous utility in our daily lives. Nanoplastic (NP) and microplastic (MP) pollution has become a severe threat to the planet and is a growing concern. It has been widely reported that polystyrene (PS) MPs are severely toxic to the male reproduction system, with effects including decreased sperm parameters, impaired spermatogenesis, and damaged testicular structures. However, the molecular mechanisms for impaired spermatogenesis remain poorly understood. Methods: C57BL/6 male mice were treated with PS-NPs (80 nm) and PS-MPs (5 μm) by oral gavage every day for 60 days. A series of morphological analyses were completed to explore the influence of PS-NP and PS-MP exposure on the testes. Compared to other cell types in the seminiferous tubule, PS-NP and PS-MP exposure can lead to decreased spermatocytes. Then, more refined molecular typing was further performed based on gene expression profiles to better understand the common and specific molecular characteristics after exposure to PS-NPs and PS-MPs. Results: There were 1794 common DEGs across the PS-NP groups at three different doses and 1433 common DEGs across the PS-MP groups at three different doses. GO and KEGG analyses of the common DEGs in the PS-NP and PS-MP groups were performed to enrich the common and specific functional progress and signaling pathways, including 349 co-enriched GO entries and 13 co-enriched pathways. Moreover, 348 GO entries and 33 pathways were specifically enriched in the PS-NP group, while 526 GO entries and 15 pathways were specifically enriched in the PS-MPs group. Conclusions: PS-NPs were predominantly involved in regulating retinoic acid metabolism, whereas PS-MPs primarily influenced pyruvate metabolism and thyroid hormone metabolism. Our results highlight the different molecular mechanisms of PS-NPs and PS-MPs in the impairment of spermatogenesis in male mammals for the first time, providing valuable insights into the precise mechanisms of PS-NPs and PS-MPs in male reproduction.

CADASIL (cerebral autosomal dominant arteriopathy with subcortical infarcts and leukoencephalopathy) is caused by NOTCH3 mutations affecting the number of cysteines. The pathogenic role of cysteine-sparing NOTCH3 mutations with typical clinical CADASIL syndrome is still debated. This review aimed to characterize NOTCH3 cysteine-sparing mutations in patients with clinical suspicion of CADASIL. Articles on NOTCH3 cysteine-sparing mutations with clinical suspicion of CADASIL were reviewed. Clinical and radiological cerebral phenotypes data were extracted and characterized across regions and compared with phenotypes of typical CADASIL patients. We screened 298 NOTCH3 cysteine-sparing mutation individuals from 20 publications, and mutations in exon 3 were the most frequently reported (21.46%). Gait impairment (76.47%), cognitive impairment (67.47%), and stroke (62.37%) were the three most common clinical phenotypes; the most frequent radiological cerebral phenotypes were lacunes (74.29%) and cerebral microbleeds (72.73%). Compared with CADASIL patients, cognitive impairment and cerebral microbleed frequencies were significantly higher in patients with NOTCH3 cysteine-sparing mutations, while the white matter hyperintensities in anterior temporal polar and external capsule were rarely observed. Compared with Western patients, radiological phenotypes were more common than clinical phenotypes in cysteine-sparing Asian patients. More than half of cysteine-sparing patients had positive granular osmiophilic material deposits. NOTCH3 cysteine-sparing mutations in patients with clinical suspicion of CADASIL mainly manifested with gait and cognitive impairment but rare white matter hyperintensities in anterior temporal pole and external capsule. Further studies are warranted to pay attention to atypical NOTCH3 variants, which could guide specific diagnosis and help unravel underlying mechanisms.

As smart materials, electrorheological elastomers (EREs) formed by pre-treating active electrorheological particles are attracting more and more attention. In this work, four Mg-doped strontium titanate (Mg-STO) particles with spherical, dendritic, flake-like, and pinecone-like morphologies were obtained via hydrothermal and low-temperature co-precipitation. XRD, SEM, Raman, and FT-IR were used to characterize these products. The results showed that Mg-STOs are about 1.5–2.0 μm in size, and their phase structures are dominated by cubic crystals. These Mg-STOs were dispersed in a hydrogel composite elastic medium. Then, Mg-STO/glycerol/gelatin electrorheological composite hydrophilic elastomers were obtained with or without an electric field. The electric field response properties of Mg-doped strontium titanate composite elastomers were investigated. We concluded that dendritic Mg-STO composite elastomers are high-performance EREs, and the maximum value of their energy storage was 8.70 MPa. The significant electrorheological performance of these products is helpful for their applications in vibration control, force transducers, smart structures, dampers, and other fields.

Orbital maneuver detection for non-cooperative targets in space is a key task in space situational awareness. This study develops a passive maneuver detection algorithm using line-of-sight angles measured by a space-based optical sensor, especially for targets in high-altitude orbit. Emphasis is placed on constructing a new characterization for maneuvers as well as the corresponding detection method. First, the concept of relative angular momentum is introduced to characterize the orbital maneuver of the target quantitatively, and the sensitivity of the proposed characterization is analyzed mathematically. Second, a maneuver detection algorithm based on the new characterization is designed in which sliding windows and correlations are utilized to determine the mutation of the maneuver characterization. Subsequently, a numerical simulation system composed of error models, reference missions and trajectories, and computation models for estimating errors is established. Then, the proposed algorithm is verified through numerical simulations for both long-range and close-range targets. The results indicate that the proposed algorithm is effective. Additionally, the sensitivity of the proposed algorithm to the width of the sliding window, accuracy of the optical sensor, magnitude and number of maneuvers, and different relative orbit types is analyzed, and the sensitivity of the new characterization is verified using simulations.

Cesium doped WO3 (Cs-WO3) photocatalyst with high and stable oxidation activity was successfully synthesized by a one-step hydrothermal method using Cs2CO3 as the doped metal ion source and tungstic acid (H2WO4) as the tungsten source. A series of analytical characterization tools and oxygen precipitation activity tests were used to compare the effects of different additions of Cs2CO3 on the crystal structure and microscopic morphologies. The UV–visible diffuse reflectance spectra (DRS) of Cs-doped material exhibited a significant red shift in the absorption edge with new shoulders appearing at 440–520 nm. The formation of an oxygen vacancy was confirmed in Cs-WO3 by the EPR signal, which can effectively regulate the electronic structure of the catalyst surface and contribute to improving the activity of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). The photocatalytic OER results showed that the Cs-WO3-0.1 exhibited the optimal oxygen precipitation activity, reaching 58.28 µmol at 6 h, which was greater than six times higher than that of WO3-0 (9.76 μmol). It can be attributed to the synergistic effect of the increase in the conduction band position of Cs-WO3-0.1 (0.11 V) and oxygen vacancies compared to WO3-0, which accelerate the electron conduction rate and slow down the rapid compounding of photogenerated electrons–holes, improving the water-catalytic oxygen precipitation activity of WO3.

The positive solutions to the critical Lane–Emden equation in Rn have been classified completely by the moving plane method. Afterwards, with additional conditions such as limited energy or volume, there is proof that relies entirely on integration by parts and inequalities techniques. In this paper, the authors provide a new approach to obtain the same classification results without further assumptions.

B0 field inhomogeneity is a long-lasting issue for Cardiac MRI (CMR) in high-field (3T and above) scanners. The inhomogeneous B0 fields can lead to corrupted image quality, prolonged scan time, and false diagnosis. B0 shimming is the most straightforward way to improve the B0 homogeneity. However, today’s standard cardiac shimming protocol requires manual selection of a shim volume, which often falsely includes regions with large B0 deviation (e.g., liver, fat, and chest wall). The flawed shim field compromises the reliability of high-field CMR protocols, which significantly reduces the scan efficiency and hinders its wider clinical adoption. This study aims to develop a dual-channel deep learning model that can reliably contour the cardiac region for B0 shim without human interaction and under variable imaging protocols. By utilizing both the magnitude and phase information, the model achieved a high segmentation accuracy in the B0 field maps compared to the conventional single-channel methods (Dice score: 2D-mag = 0.866, 3D-mag = 0.907, and 3D-mag-phase = 0.938, all p < 0.05). Furthermore, it shows better generalizability against the common variations in MRI imaging parameters and enables significantly improved B0 shim compared to the standard method (SD(B0Shim): Proposed = 15 ± 11% vs. Standard = 6 ± 12%, p < 0.05). The proposed autonomous model can boost the reliability of cardiac shimming at 3T and serve as the foundation for more reliable and efficient high-field CMR imaging in clinical routines.

At present, energy surplus and micronutrient deficiency coexist in preschool children in China. The low intake of dairy products accompanied by an increased consumption of soft drinks in this age group reveals some of the reasons for this phenomenon. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the improvement of key micronutrients in preschool children by quantifying the dietary nutritional gap before and after simulating the use of dairy products instead of equal amounts of soft drinks. In the cross-sectional dietary intake survey of infants and young children in China (2018–2019), 676 preschool children aged 3–6 years were randomly selected. Four days of dietary data were collected through an online diary for simulation. The individual intake of soft drinks was substituted at a corresponding volume by soymilk, cow’s milk, or formulated milk powder for preschool children (FMP-PSC). In these three models, the simulated nutrient intake and nutrient inadequacy or surplus were compared with the actual baseline data of the survey. The results of this study indicated that all three models made the nutrient intakes of this group more in line with the recommendations. For the whole population, the replacement of soymilk improved the intake of zinc (from 4.80 to 4.85 mg/d), potassium (from 824.26 to 836.82 mg/d), vitamin A (from 211.57 to 213.92 μg retinol activity equivalent/d), and vitamin B9 (from 115.94 to 122.79 μg dietary folate equivalent/d); the simulation of cow’s milk improved the intake of calcium (from 311.82 to 330.85 mg/d), zinc (from 4.80 to 4.87 mg/d), potassium (from 824.26 to 833.62 mg/d), vitamin A (from 211.57 to 215.12 μg retinol activity equivalent/d), vitamin B2 (from 0.53 to 0.54 mg/d), and vitamin B12 (from 1.63 to 1.67 μg/d); and the substitution of FMP-PSC improved the intake of calcium (from 311.82 to 332.32 mg/d), iron (from 9.91 to 9.36 mg/d), zinc (from 4.80 to 4.96 mg/d), potassium (from 824.26 to 828.71 mg/d), vitamin A (from 211.57 to 217.93 μg retinol activity equivalent/d), vitamin B2 (from 0.53 to 0.54 mg/d), vitamin B9 (from 115.94 to 118.80 μg RA dietary folate equivalent/d), and vitamin B12 (from 1.63 to 1.70 μg/d). Therefore, correct nutritional information should be provided to parents and preschool children. In addition to changing the consumption behavior of soft drinks, it is also necessary to have a diversified and balanced diet. When necessary, the use of food ingredients or nutritional fortifiers can be encouraged.

In this paper, we propose a novel shape-sensing method based on deep learning with a multi-core optical fiber for the accurate shape-sensing of catheters and guidewires. Firstly, we designed a catheter with embedded multi-core fiber containing three sensing outer cores and one temperature compensation middle core. Then, we analyzed the relationship between the central wavelength shift, the curvature of the multi-core Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG), and temperature compensation methods to establish a Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) BP neural network-based catheter shape sensing method. Finally, experiments were conducted in both constant and variable temperature environments to validate the method. The average and maximum distance errors of the PSO-BP neural network were 0.57 and 1.33 mm, respectively, under constant temperature conditions, and 0.36 and 0.96 mm, respectively, under variable temperature conditions. This well-sensed catheter shape demonstrates the effectiveness of the shape-sensing method proposed in this paper and its potential applications in real surgical catheters and guidewire.

Inverse sandwich clusters composed of a monocyclic boron ring and two capping transition metal atoms are interesting alloy cluster systems, yet their chemical bonding nature has not been sufficiently elucidated to date. We report herein on the theoretical prediction of a new example of boron-based inverse sandwich alloy clusters, V2B7−, through computational global-minimum structure searches and quantum chemical calculations. This alloy cluster has a heptatomic boron ring as well as a perpendicular V2 dimer unit that penetrates through the ring. Chemical bonding analysis suggests that the inverse sandwich cluster is governed by globally delocalized 6π and 6σ frameworks, that is, double 6π/6σ aromaticity following the (4n + 2) Hückel rule. The skeleton B−B σ bonding in the cluster is shown not to be strictly Lewis-type two-center two-electron (2c-2e) σ bonds. Rather, these are quasi-Lewis-type, roof-like 4c-2e V−B2−V σ bonds, which amount to seven in total and cover the whole surface of inverse sandwich in a truly three-dimensional manner. Theoretical evidence is revealed for a 2c-2e Lewis σ single bond within the V2 dimer. Direct metal–metal bonding is scarce in inverse sandwich alloy clusters. The present inverse sandwich alloy cluster also offers a new type of electronic transmutation in physical chemistry, which helps establish an intriguing chemical analogy between inverse sandwich clusters and planar hypercoordinate molecular wheels.

In this paper, we propose a modeling method based on peridynamics for ductile fracture at high temperatures. We use a thermoelastic coupling model combining peridynamics and classical continuum mechanics to limit peridynamics calculations to the failure region of a given structure, thereby reducing computational costs. Additionally, we develop a plastic constitutive model of peridynamic bonds to capture the process of ductile fracture in the structure. Furthermore, we introduce an iterative algorithm for ductile-fracture calculations. We present several numerical examples illustrating the performance of our approach. More specifically, we simulated the fracture processes of a superalloy structure in 800 ℃ and 900 ℃ environments and compared the results with experimental data. Our comparisons show that the crack modes captured by the proposed model are similar to the experimental observations, verfying the validity of the proposed model.

The characterization and dynamics of protein structures upon adsorption at the air/water interface are important for understanding the mechanism of the foamability of proteins. Hydrogen–deuterium exchange, coupled with mass spectrometry (HDX-MS), is an advantageous technique for providing conformational information for proteins. In this work, an air/water interface, HDX-MS, for the adsorbed proteins at the interface was developed. The model protein bovine serum albumin (BSA) was deuterium-labeled at the air/water interface in situ for different predetermined times (10 min and 4 h), and then the resulting mass shifts were analyzed by MS. The results indicated that peptides 54–63, 227–236, and 355–366 of BSA might be involved in the adsorption to the air/water interface. Moreover, the residues L55, H63, R232, A233, L234, K235, A236, R359, and V366 of these peptides might interact with the air/water interface through hydrophobic and electrostatic interactions. Meanwhile, the results showed that conformational changes of peptides 54–63, 227–236, and 355–366 could lead to structural changes in their surrounding peptides, 204–208 and 349–354, which could cause the reduction of the content of helical structures in the rearrangement process of interfacial proteins. Therefore, our air/water interface HDX-MS method could provide new and meaningful insights into the spatial conformational changes of proteins at the air/water interface, which could help us to further understand the mechanism of protein foaming properties.

Doping alkali metals into boron clusters can effectively compensate for the intrinsic electron deficiency of boron and lead to interesting boron-based binary clusters, owing to the small electronegativity of the former elements. We report on the computational design of a three-layered sandwich cluster, Na5B7, on the basis of global-minimum (GM) searches and electronic structure calculations. It is shown that the Na5B7 cluster can be described as a charge-transfer complex: [Na4]2+[B7]3−[Na]+. In this sandwich cluster, the [B7]3− core assumes a molecular wheel in shape and features in-plane hexagonal coordination. The magic 6π/6σ double aromaticity underlies the stability of the [B7]3− molecular wheel, following the (4n + 2) Hückel rule. The tetrahedral Na4 ligand in the sandwich has a [Na4]2+ charge-state, which is the simplest example of three-dimensional aromaticity, spherical aromaticity, or superatom. Its 2σ electron counting renders σ aromaticity for the ligand. Overall, the sandwich cluster has three-fold 6π/6σ/2σ aromaticity. Molecular dynamics simulation shows that the sandwich cluster is dynamically fluxional even at room temperature, with a negligible energy barrier for intramolecular twisting between the B7 wheel and the Na4 ligand. The Na5B7 cluster offers a new example for dynamic structural fluxionality in molecular systems.

A highly efficient visible-light-driven photoanode, N2-intercalated tungsten trioxide (WO3) nanorod, has been controllably synthesized by using the dual role of hydrazine (N2H4), which functioned simultaneously as a structure directing agent and as a nitrogen source for N2 intercalation. The SEM results indicated that the controllable formation of WO3 nanorod by changing the amount of N2H4. The β values of lattice parameters of the monoclinic phase and the lattice volume changed significantly with the nW: nN2H4 ratio. This is consistent with the addition of N2H4 dependence of the N content, clarifying the intercalation of N2 in the WO3 lattice. The UV-visible diffuse reflectance spectra (DRS) of N2-intercalated exhibited a significant redshift in the absorption edge with new shoulders appearing at 470–600 nm, which became more intense as the nW:nN2H4 ratio increased from 1:1.2 and then decreased up to 1:5 through the maximum at 1:2.5. This addition of N2H4 dependence is consistent with the case of the N contents. This suggests that N2 intercalating into the WO3 lattice is responsible for the considerable red shift in the absorption edge, with a new shoulder appearing at 470−600 nm owing to formation of an intra-bandgap above the VB edges and a dopant energy level below the CB of WO3. The N2 intercalated WO3 photoanode generated a photoanodic current under visible light irradiation below 530 nm due to the photoelectrochemical (PEC) water oxidation, compared with pure WO3 doing so below 470 nm. The high incident photon-to-current conversion efficiency (IPCE) of the WO3-2.5 photoanode is due to efficient electron transport through the WO3 nanorod film.

The study of brain connectivity plays an important role in understanding the functional organizations of the brain. It also helps to identify connectivity signatures that can be used for evaluating neural disorders and monitoring treatment efficacy. In this work, age-related changes in brain connectivity are studied to obtain aging signatures based on various modeling techniques. These include an energy-based machine learning technique to identify brain network interaction differences between two age groups with a large (30 years) age gap between them. Disconnectivity graphs and activation maps of the seven prominent resting-state networks (RSN) were obtained from functional MRI data of old and young adult subjects. Two-sample t-tests were performed on the local minimums with Bonferroni correction to control the family-wise error rate. These local minimums are connectivity states showing not only which brain regions but also how strong they are working together. They work as aging signatures that can be used to differentiate young and old groups. We found that the attention network’s connectivity signature is a state with all the regions working together and young subjects have a stronger average connectivity among these regions. We have also found a common pattern between young and old subjects where the left and right brain regions of the frontal network are sometimes working separately instead of together. In summary, in this work, we combined machine learning and statistical approaches to extract connectivity signatures, which can be utilized to distinguish aging brains and monitor possible treatment efficacy.

To study the seismic performance of high-strength reinforced concrete frame joints, cyclic loading tests were carried out on six concrete beam-column joints configured with the new Cold-rolled Ribbed Bar (CRB) 735 high-strength steel reinforcement and one joint with Hot-rolled Ribbed Bar (HRB) 400 ordinary steel reinforcement to obtain the effects of the axial compression ratio and the stirrup ratio in the joint core on the seismic performance of the joints. The test results show that the following: (1) Increasing the axial compression ratio can improve the energy dissipation characteristics of the joints configured with CRB735, but cannot effectively improve the ultimate shear capacity of the joints. Larger axial compression ratio will cause earlier cracks in the core area and reduce the ductility of the specimens by 6.1~27.9%. (2) Increasing the stirrup ratio in the joint core will increase the shear capacity of the joint by 5.3~8.1% while also increasing the failure displacement by 2.8~14.9%. (3) When the joints are configured with CRB735 stirrups, the rate of stiffness degradation from core cracking to the yielding stage of the specimens will be effectively delayed. (4) Compared with the joint configured with HRB400, the ultimate loading process of the joints using CRB735 is shorter, the yield load and yield displacement are higher, and the specimens are close to the ultimate state when they reach yield. Finally, the shear capacity of concrete beam-column joints configured with CRB735 can be calculated using the relevant shear capacity equation in GB50010-2010 Code for Design of Concrete Structures, and has a certain safety reserve. In the equation, the yield strength of CRB735 steel reinforcement is recommended to be 735 MPa.

Multi-objective particle swarm optimization (MOPSO) algorithms based on angle preference provide a set of preferred solutions by incorporating a user’s preference. However, since the search mechanism is stochastic and asymmetric, traditional MOPSO based on angle preference are still easy to fall into local optima and lack enough selection pressure on excellent individuals. In this paper, an improved MOPSO algorithm based on angle preference called IAPMOPSO is proposed to alleviate those problems. First, to create a stricter partial order among the non-dominated solutions, reference vectors are established in the preference region, and the adaptive penalty-based boundary intersection (PBI) value is used to update the external archive. Second, to effectively alleviate the swarm to fall into local optima, an adaptive preference angle is designed to increase the diversity of the population. Third, neighborhood individuals are selected for each particle to update the individual optimum to increase the information exchange among the particles. With the proposed angle preference-based external archive update strategy, solutions with a smaller PBI are given higher priority to be selected, and thus the selection pressure on excellent individuals is enhanced. In terms of an increase in the diversity of the population, the adaptive preference angle adjustment strategy that gradually narrows the preferred area, and the individual optimum update strategy which updates the individual optimum according to the information of neighborhood individuals, are presented. The experimental results on the benchmark test functions and GEM data verify the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed method.

An Sb2S3-sensitized TiO2 (Sb2S3/TiO2) photo-anode (PA) exhibiting a high photo-electrochemical (PEC) performance in water oxidation has been successfully prepared by a simple chemical bath deposition (CBD) technique. Herein, the Raman spectra and XPS spectrum of Sb2S3/TiO2 confirmed the formation of Sb2S3 on the TiO2 coatings. The Sb2S3/TiO2 photo-anode significantly shifted the absorption edge from 395 nm (3.10 eV) to 650 nm (1.90 eV). Furthermore, the Sb2S3/TiO2 photo-anode generated a photo-anodic current under visible light irradiation below 650 nm due to the photo-electrochemical action compared with the TiO2 photo-anode at 390 nm. The incident photon-to-current conversion efficiency (IPCE = 7.7%) at 400 nm and −0.3 V vs. Ag/AgCl was 37 times higher than that (0.21%) of the TiO2 photo-anodes due to the low recombination rate and acceleration of the carriers of Sb2S3/TiO2. Moreover, the photo-anodic current and photostability of the Sb2S3/TiO2 photo-anodes improved via adding the Co2+ ions to the electrolyte solution during photo-electrocatalysis.

Toll-like receptor (TLR) is a cluster of type I transmembrane proteins that plays a role in innate immunity. Based on the marbled rockfish (Sebastiscus marmoratus) genome database, this study used bioinformatics methods to identify and analyze its TLR gene family members. The results showed that there were 11 TLR gene family members in Sebastiscus marmoratus (SmaTLR), which could be divided into five different subfamilies. The number of amino acids encoded by the Smatlr genes ranged from 637 to 1206. The physicochemical properties of the encoded proteins of different members were also computed. The results of protein structure prediction, phylogenetic relation, and motif analysis showed that the structure and function of the SmaTLRs were relatively conserved. Quantitative Real-Time PCR (qRT-PCR) analysis revealed the expression patterns of SmaTLRs in the gill, liver, spleen, head kidney, kidney, and intestine. SmaTLRs were widely detected in the tested tissues, and they tended to be expressed higher in immune-related tissues. After polyriboinosinic polyribocytidylic acid (poly(I:C)) challenge, SmaTLR14, SmaTLR3, SmaTLR5S, SmaTLR7, and SmaTLR22 were significantly upregulated in the spleen or liver. The results of this study will help to understand the status of TLR gene family members of marbled rockfish and provide a basis for further study of the functional analysis of this gene family.

As the length of single sling increases, double slings with transverse connections are gradually becoming one of the effective measures to control the undesirable vibration of single slings. In the analysis of the dynamic characteristics of the double sling system, this paper firstly deduces the dynamic stiffness matrix of the elastically connected double sling system by the dynamic stiffness method (DSM), solves the frequency equation evolved from the dynamic stiffness matrix by using the Wittrick-Williams (W-W) algorithm, and obtains the systematic analysis and calculation of the dynamic characteristics of the double sling system under arbitrary boundary conditions. Secondly, a complete and accurate analysis method of the dynamic characteristics of the double sling system is obtained by comprehensively considering the bending stiffness and boundary conditions of the sling, and the accuracy of the calculation can be verified by the actual measurement data. Finally, the best installation position and quantity of transverse sling clamps in the double sling system are obtained by the parametric analysis of transverse sling clamps. The analysis of this paper will provide a theoretical basis for the design and optimization of slings, and further promote the wide application of the double sling system.

Background: Metabolomics is useful in elucidating the progression of diabetes; however, the follow-up changes in metabolomics among health, diabetes mellitus, and diabetic kidney disease (DKD) have not been reported. This study was aimed to reveal metabolomic signatures in diabetes development and progression. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, we compared healthy (n = 30), type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) (n = 30), and DKD (n = 30) subjects with the goal of identifying gradual altering metabolites. Then, a prospective study was performed in T2DM patients to evaluate these altered metabolites in the onset of DKD. Logistic regression was conducted to predict rapid eGFR decline in T2DM subjects using altered metabolites. The prospective association of metabolites with the risk of developing DKD was examined using logistic regression and restricted cubic spline regression models. Results: In this cross-sectional study, impaired amino acid metabolism was the main metabolic signature in the onset and development of diabetes, which was characterized by increased N-acetylaspartic acid, L-valine, isoleucine, asparagine, betaine, and L-methionine levels in both the T2DM and DKD groups. These candidate metabolites could distinguish the DKD group from the T2DM group. In the follow-up study, higher baseline levels of L-valine and isoleucine were significantly associated with an increased risk of rapid eGFR decline in T2DM patients. Of these, L-valine and isoleucine were independent risk factors for the development of DKD. Notably, nonlinear associations were also observed for higher baseline levels of L-valine and isoleucine, with an increased risk of DKD among patients with T2DM. Conclusion: Amino acid metabolism was disturbed in diabetes, and N-acetylaspartic acid, L-valine, isoleucine, asparagine, betaine, and L-methionine could be biomarkers for the onset and progression of diabetes. Furthermore, high levels of L-valine and isoleucine may be risk factors for DKD development.

Poly (I:C) can work as an immunostimulant and a viral vaccine; however, its functional mechanism in aquatic animals needs to be further investigated. In this study, comparative transcriptomic analyses were performed to investigate the effects of poly (I:C) on Argyrosomus japonicus at 12 h and 48 h postinjection. A total of 194 and 294 differentially expressed genes were obtained in the liver and spleen, respectively. At 12 h, poly (I:C) injection could significantly influence the function of the metabolism-related pathways and immune-related pathways in the liver through the upregulation of the genes GST, LPIN, FOXO1, CYP24A1, ECM1, and SGK1, and the downregulation of the genes IL-1β, CXC19, TNFAIP3, and IRF1. At 48 h, poly (I:C) could enhance the liver energy metabolism by upregulating the genes TXNRD and ECM1, while it also induced some injury in the cells with the downregulation of the genes HBA and CYP24A1. In the spleen, poly (I:C) could regulate the fish immunity and inflammatory response by upregulating the genes DDIT4, C3, EFNA, and MNK, and by downregulating the genes ABCA1, SORT1, TNF, TLR2, IL8, and MHCII at 12 h, and at 48 h, the poly (I:C) had a similar influence as that in the liver. Intersection analyses demonstrated that CYP24A1 and ECM1 were the main functional genes that contributed to the health of the liver. Ten and four genes participated in maintaining the health of the two tissues after 12 h and 48 h, respectively. In summary, our results provided a new insight into ploy (I:C) application in A. japonicus, and it also helped us to better understand the fish response mechanism to the viral vaccine injection.

Traditional wheelchairs are unable to actively sense the external environment during use and have a single control method. Therefore, this paper develops an intelligent IoT wheelchair with the three functions, as follows. (1) Occupant-wheelchair-environment multimode sensing: the PAJ7620 sensor is used to recognize gesture information, while GPS (Global Positioning System) and IMU (Inertial Measurement Unit) sensors are used to sense positioning, speed and postural information. In addition, Lidar, DHT11, and BH1750 sensors obtain environmental information such as road information, temperature and humidity and light intensity. (2) Fusion control scheme: a mobile control scheme based on rocker and gesture recognition, as well as a backrest and footrest lifting, lowering and movement control scheme based on Tencent Cloud and mobile APP (Application). (3) Human-machine interaction: the wheelchair is docked to Tencent IoT Explorer through ESP8266 WiFi module, using MQTT (Message Queuing Telemetry Transport) protocol is used to upload sensory data, while the wheelchair status can be viewed and controlled on the APP. The wheelchair designed in this paper can sense and report the status of the occupant, environment and wheelchair in real time, while the user can view the sensory data on the mobile APP and control the wheelchair using the rocker, gestures and APP.

Foxtail millet (Setaria italica L.) is an important cereal for managing future water scarcity and ensuring food security, due to its strong drought and salt stress resistance owing to its developed root system. However, the molecular responses of foxtail millet leaves to salt stress are largely unknown. In this study, seeds of 104 foxtail millet accessions were subjected to 0.17 mol·L−1 NaCl stress during germination, and various germination-related parameters were analyzed to derive 5 salt-sensitive accessions and 13 salt-tolerant accessions. Hong Gu 2000 and Pu Huang Yu were the most salt-tolerant and salt-sensitive accessions, respectively. To determine the mechanism of the salt stress response, transcriptomic differences between the control and salt-treated groups were investigated. We obtained 2019 and 736 differentially expressed genes under salt stress in the salt-sensitive and salt-tolerant accessions, respectively. The transcription factor families bHLH, WRKY, AP2/ERF, and MYB-MYC were found to play critical roles in foxtail millet’s response to salt stress. Additionally, the down-regulation of ribosomal protein-related genes causes stunted growth in the salt-sensitive accessions. The salt-tolerant accession alleviates salt stress by increasing energy production. Our findings provide novel insights into the molecular mechanism of foxtail millet’s response to salt stress.

In this work, a highly efficient wide-visible-light-driven photoanode, namely, nitrogen and sulfur co-doped tungsten trioxide (S-N-WO3), was synthesized using tungstic acid (H2WO4) as W source and ammonium sulfide ((NH4)2S), which functioned simultaneously as a sulfur source and as a nitrogen source for the co-doping of nitrogen and sulfur. The EDS and XPS results indicated that the controllable formation of either N-doped WO3 (N-WO3) or S-N-WO3 by changing the nW:n(NH4)2S ratio below or above 1:5. Both N and S contents increased when increasing the nW:n(NH4)2S ratio from 1:0 to 1:15 and thereafter decreased up to 1:25. The UV-visible diffuse reflectance spectra (DRS) of S-N-WO3 exhibited a significant redshift of the absorption edge with new shoulders appearing at 470–650 nm, which became more intense as the nW:n(NH4)2S ratio increased from 1:5 and then decreased up to 1:25, with the maximum at 1:15. The values of nW:n(NH4)2S ratio dependence is consistent with the cases of the S and N contents. This suggests that S and N co-doped into the WO3 lattice are responsible for the considerable redshift in the absorption edge, with a new shoulder appearing at 470–650 nm owing to the intrabandgap formation above the valence band (VB) edge and a dopant energy level below the conduction band (CB) of WO3. Therefore, benefiting from the S and N co-doping, the S-N-WO3 photoanode generated a photoanodic current under visible light irradiation below 580 nm due to the photoelectrochemical (PEC) water oxidation, compared with pure WO3 doing so below 470 nm.

This work studied the interactions between trehalose/chitooligosaccharide (COS) and myofibrillar protein (MP), and the effect of such interactions on the quality of meat after freezing was also evaluated. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy showed that both trehalose and COS could enhance the content of hydrogen bonds of MP. Zeta potential measurement displayed trehalose/COS reduced the absolute value of the surface potential of MP. The results of Raman spectroscopy suggested that the hydrophobic residues of MP were more exposed after treatment with trehalose/COS. Thus, trehalose and COS could both interact with MP through non-covalent bonds. Subsequently, the evaluation of the effect of trehalose and COS on the physicochemical properties of frozen meat was conducted. Results showed that both trehalose and COS significantly reduced thawing loss of frozen meat, and sensory evaluation showed that trehalose had a better performance from the perspective of smell, texture, and overall consumer acceptance. In conclusion, trehalose/COS interacting with MP can reduce meat thawing loss, which might provide technical guidance in the quality control of frozen meat.

In this paper, a failure theory for the multidirectional fiber-reinforced composite laminate with a circular hole is developed. In this theory, the finite fracture mechanics method is combined with the improved Puck’s failure theory including the in situ strength effect. It can predict the notched strength by only basic material properties of unidirectional laminas, geometries and stacking sequence of the laminate. In advance mechanical properties of the laminate are unnecessary. The notched laminates with different material types and stacking sequences are taken as examples to verify this failure theory, and predicted results are in good agreement with experiments. Based on the developed failure theory, importance measurement of uncertain material properties to the notched strength is analysed. Results show that notched strength increases with increasing longitudinal tensile strength and in-plane shear modulus for the laminate with an arbitrary hole diameter. However, it decreases with increasing transverse modulus.

Suspension bridges and arch bridges are important structural forms of bridges in which the cables are the main load-bearing members. The study of dynamic characteristics of the cable is of great significance to the design and operation and maintenance of suspension bridges and arch bridges. Firstly, this paper derives the cable frequency equation considering the bending stiffness under arbitrary boundary conditions from the dynamic stiffness method (DSM), and gives the calculation method of cable vibration modal frequency based on the W–W algorithm. Secondly, on this basis, the cable boundary condition coefficients and stiffness ratios are introduced to reflect the constraint strength of the main cable and stiffening beam on the cable, so as to study the influence law of these boundary conditions on the cable modal frequency, and then determine the actual cable boundary conditions of this kind of bridge. Finally, the boundary condition coefficients determined in this paper and the relevant parameters of the cables are inversely used to determine the boundary conditions of the actual bridge cables, and a simple method suitable for determining the boundary conditions of the cables in practical engineering is discussed, i.e., the theoretical basis for determining the boundary conditions of the cables through the relevant parameters of the cables, and the practical discussion of the theory is verified through the actual bridge cables. This study provides a reference for further theoretical analysis of cables, a theoretical basis for calculation of actual bridge cables, boundary conditions for in-depth study of dynamic characteristics of cables, and guides the design, operation, and maintenance of cables.

In order to fill the research gap of high metal loading of high performance PtNi alloy catalysts, a PtNi/C alloy nano-catalyst with metal loading more than 50 wt.% and core-shell like structure was prepared by ethylene glycol reduction, high temperature annealing, and acid pickling. The electrochemical test results showed that the prepared PtNi alloy catalyst had excellent electrochemical activity: the electrochemical surface area (ECSA) was 63.8 m2·gPt−1, and the mass activity (MA) was 0.574 A·mgPt−1, which is 2.73 times greater than those of the Pt/C JM (Johnson Matthey) catalyst. The durability of the PtNi/C catalyst was further investigated. After 30 K cycles of accelerated durability test, the ECSA and MA of the PtNi/C alloy catalyst decreased by 10.2% and 31.2%, respectively. The PtNi/C alloy catalyst prepared in this study has excellent catalytic activity and overcomes the problem of insufficient durability of traditional alloy catalysts and has the potential for large-scale commercial application.

Bats are reservoirs of a large number of viruses of global public health significance, including the ancestral virus for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) and the causative agent of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Although bats are natural carriers of multiple pathogenic viruses, they rarely display signs of disease. Recent insights suggest that bats have a more balanced host defense and tolerance system to viral infections that may be linked to the evolutionary adaptation to powered flight. Therefore, a deeper understanding of bat immune system may provide intervention strategies to prevent zoonotic disease transmission and to identify new therapeutic targets. Similar to other eutherian mammals, bats have both innate and adaptive immune systems that have evolved to detect and respond to invading pathogens. Bridging these two systems are innate lymphocytes, which are highly abundant within circulation and barrier tissues. These cells share the characteristics of both innate and adaptive immune cells and are poised to mount rapid effector responses. They are ideally suited as the first line of defense against early stages of viral infections. Here, we will focus on the current knowledge of innate lymphocytes in bats, their function, and their potential role in host–pathogen interactions. Moreover, given that studies into bat immune systems are often hindered by a lack of bat-specific research tools, we will discuss strategies that may aid future research in bat immunity, including the potential use of organoid models to delineate the interplay between innate lymphocytes, bat viruses, and host tolerance.

When vehicles interact with a bridge, a vehicle–bridge interaction (VBI) system is created. The frequency and modal shape of VBI systems have been widely studied, but the damping of VBI systems has not been adequately investigated. In recent years, several incidents of abnormal bridge vibration due to changes in bridge damping have occurred and aroused widespread concern in society. Damping is an important evaluation index of structural dynamic performance. Knowing the damping ratio of a VBI system is useful for analyzing the damping changes while a bridge is in service. This paper presents a method to extract bridge damping values from a VBI system, which can serve as a guide for bridge damping evaluation. First, a double-beam theoretical model was used to simplify the VBI system for cases involving uniform traffic flow. The damping ratio equation for the simplified VBI system was obtained using the extended dynamic stiffness method (EDSM). A double-beam finite element model and a VBI finite element model were established. The damping ratios of the two models were separately calculated and then compared with the simplified VBI model results. The results verified the accuracy of the simplified method. This paper then explains that bridge damping values can be extracted by estimating the equivalent traffic flow parameters and using the damping formula for the simplified VBI system. The bridge damping ratios extracted using this method in an engineering case ranged from 0.75% to 0.78%, which is smaller than the range that was directly identified using monitoring data (0.83–1.19%). The results show that the method can effectively extract bridge damping ratios and improve damping ratio identification.

Membrane distillation (MD) is a thermally driven desalination process that has excellent application prospects in seawater desalination or hypersaline wastewater treatment, while severe temperature polarization (TP) and the resulting relatively high energy consumption have become principal challenges limiting the commercial application of MD. Therefore, the design of novel systems to overcome the shortage of conventional MD requires urgent attention. Here, we developed three surface heating vacuum membrane distillation systems, namely, SHVMD-1, SHVMD-2, and SHVMD-3, according to the different positions of the thermal conducting layer in the cell. The distillate flux, TP, and energy performance of these systems under different operating conditions were investigated. All three systems showed stable performance, with a salt rejection >99.98% for 35 g/L NaCl, and the highest flux was close to 9 L/m2·h. The temperature polarization coefficients were higher than unity in SHVMD-2 and SHVMD-3 systems, and the SHVMD-2 system produced the lowest specific energy consumption and the highest thermal efficiency. In addition, we tested the intermittent surface heating process, which can further improve energy performance through reducing specific electrical energy consumption in vacuum membrane distillation. This paper provides a simple and efficient membrane system for the desalination of brines.

Food microbial contamination not only poses the problems of food insecurity and economic loss, but also contributes to food waste, which is another global environmental problem. Therefore, effective packaging is a compelling obstacle for shielding food items from outside contaminants and maintaining its quality. Traditionally, food is packaged with plastic that is rarely recyclable, negatively impacting the environment. Bio-based materials have attracted widespread attention for food packaging applications since they are biodegradable, renewable, and have a low carbon footprint. They provide a great opportunity to reduce the extensive use of fossil fuels and develop food packaging materials with good properties, addressing environmental problems and contributing significantly to sustainable development. Presently, the developments in food chemistry, technology, and biotechnology have allowed us to fine-tune new methodologies useful for addressing major safety and environmental concerns regarding packaging materials. This review presents a comprehensive overview of the development and potential for application of new bio-based materials from different sources in antimicrobial food packaging, including carbohydrate (polysaccharide)-based materials, protein-based materials, lipid-based materials, antibacterial agents, and bio-based composites, which can solve the issues of both environmental impact and prevent foodborne pathogens and spoilage microorganisms. In addition, future trends are discussed, as well as the antimicrobial compounds incorporated in packaging materials such as nanoparticles (NPs), nanofillers (NFs), and bio-nanocomposites.

The aim was to study the complementary effect between cereals and pulses on protein quality. The values for the digestible indispensable amino acid score (DIAAS) in cooked cereals and pulses, given alone, and blends of cooked cereals and pulses, were determined. True ileal digestibility (TID) values of amino acids for adult humans were obtained. It is difficult to determine ileal amino acid digestibility in humans directly, and for this reason, the growing pig is often used to obtain such values, as a preferred animal model. Seven growing pigs fitted with a T-cannula at the terminal ileum were allotted to a 7 × 6 incomplete Latin square with seven semi-synthetic diets (cooked mung bean, adzuki bean, millet, adlay, mung bean + millet, adzuki bean + adlay, and an N-free diet) and six 7-day periods. The mean TID values for crude protein differed significantly (p < 0.05), with millet having the highest digestibility (89.4%) and the adzuki bean/adlay mixture having the lowest (79.5%). For lysine, adzuki bean had the highest TID (90%) and millet had the lowest (70%). For the mean of all the amino acids, there was a significant (p < 0.05) effect of diet, with the TID ranging from 72.4% for the adzuki bean/adlay mixture to 89.9% for the adzuki beans. For the older child, adolescent, and adult, the DIAAS (%) was 93 for mung beans, 78 for adzuki beans, 22 for millet, 16 for adlay, and 66 for mung beans + millet, and 51 for adzuki beans + adlay. For mung beans, valine was first-limiting, and the SAA for adzuki beans, while lysine was first-limiting for the other foods. Chinese traditional diets, containing both cereals and pulses, are complementary for most, but not all of the indispensable amino acids.

Despite the recent availability of vaccines against severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus type 2 (SARS-CoV-2), there is an urgent need for specific anti-SARS-CoV-2 drugs. Monoclonal neutralizing antibodies are an important drug class in the global fight against the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic due to their ability to convey immediate protection and their potential to be used as both prophylactic and therapeutic drugs. Clinically used neutralizing antibodies against respiratory viruses are currently injected intravenously, which can lead to suboptimal pulmonary bioavailability and thus to a lower effectiveness. Here we describe DZIF-10c, a fully human monoclonal neutralizing antibody that binds the receptor-binding domain of the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein. DZIF-10c displays an exceptionally high neutralizing potency against SARS-CoV-2, retains full activity against the variant of concern (VOC) B.1.1.7 and still neutralizes the VOC B.1.351, although with reduced potency. Importantly, not only systemic but also intranasal application of DZIF-10c abolished the presence of infectious particles in the lungs of SARS-CoV-2 infected mice and mitigated lung pathology when administered prophylactically. Along with a favorable pharmacokinetic profile, these results highlight DZIF-10c as a novel human SARS-CoV-2 neutralizing antibody with high in vitro and in vivo antiviral potency. The successful intranasal application of DZIF-10c paves the way for clinical trials investigating topical delivery of anti-SARS-CoV-2 antibodies.

With the recent great progress made in flexible and wearable electronic materials, the upcoming next generation of skin-mountable and implantable smart devices holds extensive potential applications for the lifestyle modifying, including personalized health monitoring, human-machine interfaces, soft robots, and implantable biomedical devices. As a core member within the wearable electronics family, flexible strain sensors play an essential role in the structure design and functional optimization. To further enhance the stretchability, flexibility, sensitivity, and electricity performances of the flexible strain sensors, enormous efforts have been done covering the materials design, manufacturing approaches and various applications. Thus, this review summarizes the latest advances in flexible strain sensors over recent years from the material, application, and manufacturing strategies. Firstly, the critical parameters measuring the performances of flexible strain sensors and materials development contains different flexible substrates, new nano- and hybrid- materials are introduced. Then, the developed working mechanisms, theoretical analysis, and computational simulation are presented. Next, based on different material design, diverse applications including human motion detection and health monitoring, soft robotics and human-machine interface, implantable devices, and biomedical applications are highlighted. Finally, synthesis consideration of the massive production industry of flexible strain sensors in the future; different fabrication approaches that are fully expected are classified and discussed.

Values for the digestible indispensable amino acid score (DIAAS) of a protein are based on true ileal amino acid (AA) digestibility values obtained in adult humans or in the growing pig as an animal model. An experiment was conducted using growing pigs to determine the true ileal digestibility (TID) values of AA in six cooked Chinese pulses (kidney bean, mung bean, adzuki bean, broad beans, peas and chickpeas). Each pulse was included in a diet as the only source of crude protein (CP). An N-free diet was given to allow determination of gut endogenous AA losses. Seven growing pigs each fitted with a T-cannula at the terminal ileum were allotted to a 7 by 6 incomplete Latin square with seven diets and six 7-d periods. The true digestibility values % for the total indispensable AA were higher (p < 0.001) for broad beans (87.3 ± 2.98) and lower (p < 0.001) for kidney bean (73.3 ± 4.84) than for the other pulses. For the older child (over 3 years), adolescent and adult, the DIAAS (%) was 88 for kidney bean, 86 for mung bean, 76 for chickpeas, 68 for peas, 64 for adzuki bean and 60 for broad beans.

Adverse weather poses a significant threat to the serviceability of highway infrastructure, as it causes more frequent and severe crash incidents. This study focuses on evaluating the resilience of highway networks by examining the crash-induced safety impact in response to extreme weather events. Unlike traditional service drop-based methods for resilience evaluation, this study endeavors to evaluate highway resilience in a spatial context. Three spatial metrics, including K-nearest neighbors, proximity to highways, and Kernel density hot spot, are introduced and employed to compare and analyze the spatial patterns (magnitude and distribution) of crashes in pre- and post-weather conditions. An illustrative example is also provided to showcase the applications of the proposed spatial resilience metrics for two study areas in the State of Illinois, U.S. The contribution of this study is to provide transportation practitioners with a tool to evaluate highway spatial resilience both visually and quantitatively, and ultimately improve highway safety and operation.

Polygalacturonase (PG) is an essential hydrolytic enzyme responsible for pectin degradation and thus plays an important role in fruit softening and other cell separation processes. PG protein is encoded by a multigene family, however, the members of PG gene family in kiwifruit (Actinidia chinensis) have not been extensively identified. In this study, a total of 51 AcPG genes in kiwifruit genome were identified. They are phylogenetically clustered into seven clades, and of them AcPG4 and AcPG18 with other known PG genes involved in fruit softening from peach, pear, papaya and melon form a small cluster together. The members of kiwifruit PG gene family consist of three to nine exons and two to eight introns, and their exon/intron structures are generally conserved in all clades except the clade D and E. During fruit softening of kiwifruit ‘Donghong’ under ambient temperature, cell wall modifying enzymes, including PG, PL (pectate and pectin lyases), and PE (pectinesterase, also known as pectin methylesterase, PME) showed a different activity profile, and of them, PG and PE activities largely correlated with the change of pectin content and firmness. Moreover, only 11 AcPG genes were highly or moderately expressed in softening fruit, and of which three AcPG genes (AcPG4, AcPG18, and AcPG8, especially the former two) has been found to strongly correlate with the profile of PG activity and pectin content, as well as fruit firmness, suggesting that they maybe play an important role in fruit softening. Thus, our findings not only benefit the functional characterization of kiwifruit PG genes, but also provide a subset of potential PG candidate genes for further genetic manipulation.

Lung cancer is the most frequent cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide, and mutations in the kinase domain of the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) are a common cause of non-small-cell lung cancers, which is a major subtype of lung cancers. Recently, a series of 5-methylpyrimidine-pyridinone derivatives have been designed and synthesized as novel selective inhibitors of EGFR and EGFR mutants. However, the binding-based inhibition mechanism has not yet been determined. In this study, we carried out molecular dynamic simulations and free-energy calculations for EGFR derivatives to fill this gap. Based on the investigation, the three factors that influence the inhibitory effect of inhibitors are as follows: (1) The substitution site of the Cl atom is the main factor influencing the activity through steric effect; (2) The secondary factors are repulsion between the F atom (present in the inhibitor) and Glu762, and the blocking effect of Lys745 on the phenyl ring of the inhibitor. (3) The two factors function synergistically to influence the inhibitory capacity of the inhibitor. The theoretical results of this study can provide further insights that will aid the design of oncogenic EGFR inhibitors with high selectivity.

Piglets with light weaning weight commonly have a slow post-weaning growth rate due to impaired skeletal muscle development. Therefore, the present study aimed to investigate the impact of birth weight and nutrient intake on skeletal muscle development, myofiber maturation, and metabolic status of early-weaned piglets. Twelve pairs of normal birth weight and intrauterine growth-retarded (IUGR) piglets (seven days old) were randomly assigned to receive adequate nutrient intake or restricted nutrient intake for 21 days. Serum and muscle samples were collected for further analysis. The results indicated that muscle weight, cross-sectional areas, and muscular glycogen were lower (p < 0.05) in both IUGR and restricted fed piglets. Nutrient restriction decreased the contents of RNA, the RNA to DNA ratio, and the percentages of myosin heavy chain (MyHC) IIx (p < 0.05), whereas increased the activity of β-hydroxy-acyl-CoA-dehydrogenase (HAD), the ratio of HAD to citrate synthase, as well as the percentages of MyHC I (p < 0.05). In addition, nutrient restriction significantly decreased muscular glycogen, mRNA levels of fatty acid transport protein 1, cationic amino acid transporter 1, and glucose transporter 4 in IUGR piglets compared with the other groups (p < 0.05). The results of the present study showed that IUGR impaired skeletal muscle growth and disturbed the hormone and mRNA expression of genes related to energy metabolism, which led to a more severe energy deficit when receiving postnatal nutritional restriction. Postnatal nutritional restriction resulted in delayed myofiber maturation of the piglets, which may be associated with the transformation of MyHC isoform and the change of metabolic status.

The groundwater divide within a plane has long been delineated as a water table ridge composed of the local top points of a water table. This definition has not been examined well for river basins. We developed a fundamental model of a two-dimensional unsaturated–saturated flow in a profile between two rivers. The exact groundwater divide can be identified from the boundary between two local flow systems and compared with the top of a water table. It is closer to the river of a higher water level than the top of a water table. The catchment area would be overestimated (up to ~50%) for a high river and underestimated (up to ~15%) for a low river by using the top of the water table. Furthermore, a pass-through flow from one river to another would be developed below two local flow systems when the groundwater divide is significantly close to a high river.

In this study, supercritical fluid (SCF) technology was applied to prepare reliable solid dispersions of pharmaceutical compounds with limited bioavailability using ibuprofen (IBU) as a model compound. Solid-state characterization of the dispersions was conducted by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The PXRD and DSC results suggested that the amorphous form of IBU was maintained in the solid dispersions. Furthermore, in vitro dissolution and in vivo pharmacokinetic (PK) studies in rats were also performed. The dissolution performance of the SCF-prepared IBU dispersions was significantly improved compared to that of the physical mixtures of crystalline IBU and a polymer. In addition, the PK results revealed that the SCF-prepared IBU dispersions produced remarkably high blood drug concentrations (both the AUC and Cmax) and a rapid absorption rate (Tmax). Finally, molecular modeling was used to evaluate the binding energy of interactions between IBU and the polymers. The negative binding energy suggests a relatively stable system. Hence, SCF technology can be used as a very effective approach to prepare IBU solid dispersions with good physical stability and enhanced in vitro and in vivo performance.

In a vadose zone the soil water content can change seasonally, driven by seasonal variations of meteorological factors. This dynamic behavior is depth-dependent, which controls the groundwater recharge from infiltration, and plays an essential role in the environments in arid and semi-arid regions. In particular, the depth-dependent seasonal variations of soil water were investigated in the Badain Jaran Desert (BJD), China, where the vadose zone is thick. The monitoring results showed that the amplitudes of temperature and soil moisture content in the shallow vadose zone (depth < 3 m) significantly decrease with depth. For the deep vadose zone (depth >3 m), the depth-dependent dynamic was synthetically estimated with both numerical and analytical models. Results show that the penetration depth of seasonal fluctuation is about 47 m, below which the infiltration flux stabilizes at a level of 30.7 ± 4 mm/yr. The depth to water table in the BJD is generally larger than 50 m, up to 480 m. As a consequence, groundwater recharge from infiltration in this area almost does not change in different seasons.

The ferrite body is the origin of crack and corrosion initiation of steels. Distribution and density of ferrite in seven steel ingots were examined by light optical microscopy and computational modeling, in the study, to explore the correlation of ferrite formation to chemical composition and the mushy zone temperature in ingot forming. The central segregation phenomenon in ferrite distribution was observed in all the examined steel specimens, except 0Cr17Ni4Cu4Nb stainless steel. No significant difference was found in the distribution and density of ferrite among zones of the surface, ½ radius, and core in neither the risers nor tails of 0Cr17Ni4Cu4Nb ingots. Additionally, fewer ferrites were found in 0Cr17Ni4Cu4Nb compared to other examined steels. The difference of ferrite formation in 0Cr17Ni4Cu4Nb elicited a debate on the traditional models explicating ferrite formation. Considering the compelling advantages in mechanical strength, plasticity, and corrosion resistance, further investigation on the unusual ferrite formation in 0Cr17Ni4Cu4Nb would help understand the mechanism to improve steel quality. In summary, we observed that ferrite formation in steel was correlated with the mushy zone temperature. The advantages of 0Crl7Ni4Cu4Nb in corrosion resistance and mechanical stability could be the result of fewer ferrites being formed and distributed in a scattered manner in the microstructure of the steel.
