With the rapid development of society and the deteriorating natural environment, there has been an increase in public emergencies. This study aimed to explore how sadness and fear in the context of public emergencies influence moral judgments. This research first induced feelings of sadness and fear by using videos about public emergencies and music, and then used moral scenarios from the CNI model (C parameter: sensitivity to consequences; N parameter: sensitivity to norms; I parameter: general preference for inaction) to assess participants’ moral thinking. In Study 1, participants were divided into a sadness group and a neutral group, while in Study 2, participants were divided into a fear group and a neutral group. During the experiment, participants were exposed to different videos related to public emergencies to induce the corresponding emotions, and emotional music was continuously played throughout the entire experiment. Participants were then asked to answer questions requiring moral judgments. The results showed that based on the CNI model, sadness induced in the context of public emergencies significantly increased the C parameter, without affecting the N or I parameters. Fear increased the I parameter, without affecting the C or I parameters. That is, sadness and fear induced in the context of a public emergency can influence moral judgments. Specifically, sadness increases individuals’ sensitivity to consequences and fear increases the general preference for inaction in moral judgments.

The construction of high-performance n-type semiconductors is crucial for the advancement of organic electronics. As an attractive n-type semiconductor, molecular systems based on perylene diimide derivatives (PDIs) have been extensively investigated over recent years. Owing to the fascinating aggregated structure and high performance, S-heterocyclic annulated PDIs (SPDIs) are receiving increasing attention. However, the relationship between the structure and the electrical properties of SPDIs has not been deeply revealed, restricting the progress of PDI-based organic electronics. Here, we developed two novel SPDIs with linear and dendronized substituents in the imide position, named linear SPDI and dendronized SPDI, respectively. A series of structural and property characterizations indicated that linear SPDI formed a long-range-ordered crystalline structure based on helical supramolecular columns, while dendronized SPDI, with longer alkyl side chains, formed a 3D-ordered crystalline structure at a low temperature, which transformed into a hexagonal columnar liquid crystal structure at a high temperature. Moreover, no significant charge carrier transport signal was examined for linear SPDI, while dendronized SPDI had a charge carrier mobility of 3.5 × 10−3 cm2 V−1 s−1 and 2.1 × 10−3 cm2 V−1 s−1 in the crystalline and liquid crystalline state, respectively. These findings highlight the importance of the structure–function relationship in PDIs, and also offer useful roadmaps for the design of high-performance organic electronics for down-to-earth applications.

The electricity spot market plays a significant role in promoting the self-improvement of the overall resource utilization efficiency of the power system and advancing energy conservation and emission reduction. This paper analyzes and compares the potential impacts of spot market operations on system planning, considering the differences between planning methods in traditional and spot market environments through theoretical analysis and model comparison. Furthermore, we conduct research and analysis on grid planning methods under the spot market environment with the goal of maximizing social benefits. Unlike the pricing approach based on historical price data in traditional market simulation processes, a data-driven approach that combines experimental economics and machine learning is proposed, specifically using mixed empirical learning to simulate unit bidding strategies in market transactions. A simulation model for electricity spot market trading is constructed to analyze the performance of the planning results in the spot market environment. The case study results indicate that the proposed planning methods can enable the grid to operate well in the spot market environment, maintain relatively stable nodal prices, and ensure the integration of a high proportion of clean energy.

Low-velocity impact (LVI) damage of 3D woven composites were experimentally and numerically investigated, considering different off-axis angles and impact energies. The impact responses were examined by LVI tests, and the damage morphology inside the composites was observed by X-ray micro-computed tomography (μ-CT). Yarn-level damage evolution was revealed by developing a hybrid finite element analysis model. The results show that the impact damage has significant directionality determined by the weft/warp orientation of the composites. The damage originates at the bottom of the impacted area and then expands outwards and upwards simultaneously, accompanied by in-plane and out-of-plane stress transfers. The straight-line distributed weft/warp yarns play an important role in bearing loads at the beginning of loading, while the w-shape distributed binder warp yarns gradually absorb impact deformation and toughen the whole structure as the loading proceeds. The effect of directional impact damage on post-impact performance was explored by performing compressing-after-impact (CAI) tests. It is revealed that the CAI properties along principal directions are more sensitive to the low-velocity impact, and the damage mode is significantly affected by the loading direction.

The low-velocity impact behavior of carbon-epoxy cross-ply composites was numerically investigated, examining the effect of impact angle. A plastic continuum damage model, introducing the cohesive interface to describe delamination damage, was established and was validated by available experimental data. Impact histories, progressive deformation, stress transfer, and impact damage are respectively discussed. The results show that an increase in impact angle intensifies the action of tangential force, and gradually transfers energy absorption from normal plastic deformation to tangential deformation and friction, which dissipates more energy through relatively longer contact duration and larger impactor displacement. The delamination damage to upper layers is more affected by tangential loads, intensifying with the increase of the impact angle, and the damage area to the top interface is increased by 132.1% from 0° impact to 60° impact. Meanwhile, the delamination damage to lower layers is mainly determined by normal loads, weakening with the increasing impact angle overall, and the damage area of the lowest interface decreases by 36.6% from 0° impact to 60° impact.

Shoulder fillets are widely used in the structural optimization design of metal dampers. However, the plastic deformation property of dampers affected by stress concentration, owing to different fillets, has not been explored in-depth. In this study, two typical metal damper materials with different plastic deformation, i.e., ordinary steel SS400 and low-yield-strength steel LYS160, were investigated. The strengthening effect of fillets under different loading is evaluated by comparing the mechanical properties of different fillet heights. Furthermore, the effect of the stress concentration caused by different fillet shapes, based on the failure mode of materials, is discussed. Subsequently, the fatigue degradation effect under the reciprocating shear loading is studied. Based on a series of studies on the deformation properties of fillets in different ductile materials, the basis for the structural optimization design under plastic deformation is provided.

The distribution automation system (DAS) is vulnerable to cyber-attacks due to the widespread use of terminal devices and standard communication protocols. On account of the cost of defense, it is impossible to ensure the security of every device in the DAS. Given this background, a novel quantitative vulnerability assessment model of cyber security for DAS is developed in this paper. In the assessment model, the potential physical consequences of cyber-attacks are analyzed from two levels: terminal device level and control center server level. Then, the attack process is modeled based on game theory and the relationships among different vulnerabilities are analyzed by introducing a vulnerability adjacency matrix. Finally, the application process of the proposed methodology is illustrated through a case study based on bus 2 of the Roy Billinton Test System (RBTS). The results demonstrate the reasonability and effectiveness of the proposed methodology.

The propagation characteristics of terahertz (THz) flexural waves in mass chain-filled single-walled carbon nanotubes (MCSCs) are studied using a continuum mechanics approach and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, where each single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) is modeled as a nonlocal Timoshenko beam based on the nonlocal strain gradient theory. The effect of the surrounding elastic medium and the van der Waals (vdW) interactions between the mass chain and the SWCNT on the wave propagation is quantitatively considered in governing equations, respectively. The analytical expressions of two flexural wave branches and the bandgap between the two branches are derived. When combining our MD simulations of the carbon-atom chain-filled SWCNT, the wave within the bandgap disperses rapidly, and the mass chain has a significant influence on the phase velocity of the flexural wave. The present theoretical solution has a high accuracy in a wide frequency range up to the THz region. In particular, the surrounding elastic medium of the MCSCs remarkably affects the phase velocity for low frequencies, but not for high frequencies. The present study indicates that the wave propagation of a SWCNT could be modulated by changing the filled mass chain and the surrounding elastic medium.

The impact of Type 4 wind turbine generator (WTG)-based 10 million megawatt clusters (TMMC) on small-signal dynamics of power systems was investigated using the second-generation generic models (GM) of Western Electricity Coordinating Council (WECC). A WTG participation index (WTG PI) was defined to investigate the impact of Type 4 WTGs on the traditional interarea electromechanical modes. To identify the new electromechanical modes dominated by Type 4 WTGs, an identification factor (IF) was also defined using participation factors. Given the increasing penetration of Type 4 WTGs replacing synchronous generators, the changed law of damping and frequencies of the traditional interarea modes was also investigated using the WTG PI. One new type of electromechanical mode dominated by Type 4 WTGs was identified by using the defined IF. These new modes can be divided into two categories: strong-interaction modes and weak-interaction modes, depending on the number of participating WTGs. The strong-interaction modes dominated by Type 4 WTGs can result in widely spread power oscillations in power systems. The results of small-signal analysis were validated by time domain simulation and mode detection.

This paper presents a multi-objective transmission expansion planning (TEP) framework. Rather than using the conventional deterministic reliability criterion, a risk component based on the probabilistic reliability criterion is incorporated into the TEP objectives. This risk component can capture the stochastic nature of power systems, such as load and wind power output variations, component availability, and incentive-based demand response (IBDR) costs. Specifically, the formulation of risk value after risk aversion is explicitly given, and it aims to provide network planners with the flexibility to conduct risk analysis. Thus, a final expansion plan can be selected according to individual risk preferences. Moreover, the economic value of IBDR is modeled and integrated into the cost objective. In addition, a relatively new multi-objective evolutionary algorithm called the MOEA/D is introduced and employed to find Pareto optimal solutions, and tradeoffs between overall cost and risk are provided. The proposed approach is numerically verified on the Garver’s six-bus, IEEE 24-bus RTS and Polish 2383-bus systems. Case study results demonstrate that the proposed approach can effectively reduce cost and hedge risk in relation to increasing wind power integration.

The concept of virtual power plant (VPP) has been proposed to facilitate the integration of distributed renewable energy. VPP behaves similar to a single entity that aggregates a collection of distributed energy resources (DERs) such as distributed generators, storage devices, flexible loads, etc., so that the aggregated power outputs can be flexibly dispatched and traded in electricity markets. This paper presents an optimal scheduling model for VPP participating in day-ahead (DA) and real-time (RT) markets. In the DA market, VPP aims to maximize the expected profit and reduce the risk in relation to uncertainties. The risk is measured by a risk factor based on the mean-variance Markowitz theory. In the RT market, VPP aims to minimize the imbalance cost and wind power curtailment by adjusting the scheduling of DERs in its portfolio. In case studies, the benefits (e.g., surplus profit and reduced wind power curtailment) of aggregated VPP operation are assessed. Moreover, we have investigated how these benefits are affected by different risk-aversion levels and uncertainty levels. According to the simulation results, the aggregated VPP scheduling approach can effectively help the integration of wind power, mitigate the impact of uncertainties, and reduce the cost of risk-aversion.

An explicit solution for the vibration of a carbon chain inside carbon nanotubes (CNTs) was obtained using continuum modeling of the van der Waals (vdW) interactions between them. The effect of the initial tensile force and the amplitude of the carbon chain as well as the radii of the CNTs on the vibration frequency were analyzed in detail, respectively. Our analytical results show that the vibration frequency of the carbon chain in a (5,5) CNT could be around two orders of magnitude higher than that of an independent carbon chain without initial tensile force. For a given CNT radius, the vibration frequency nonlinearly increases with increasing amplitude and initial tensile force. The obtained analytical cohesive energy and vibration frequency are reasonable by comparison of present molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. These findings will be a great help towards understanding the vibration property of a nanowire in nanotubes, and designing nanoelectromechanical devices.

Metallic shear panel dampers (SPDs) have been widely adopted in seismic engineering. In this study, axial and torsional specimens of four types of metallic damping materials, including three conventional metallic steels as well as low yield strength steel 160 (LYS160), were tested in order to investigate the material response under repeated large plastic strain and low cycle fatigue between 10 and 30 cycles. The present study demonstrated that both the deformation capacity and fatigue performance of LYS160 were underestimated by the conversion from the traditional uniaxial tensile test. The main difference in the failure mechanism between LYS160 and the three conventional materials was determined from the scanning electron microscopy data. The dominant failure mode in LYS160 is stable interlaminate slip and not bucking. Our results provide physical insights into the origin of the large deformation capacity, which is an important foundation for the lightweight design of SPDs.

The lightweight design and miniaturization of metallic dampers have broad application prospects in seismic engineering. In this study, the superplastic property and the maximum energy dissipation capacity per unit mass of low-yield-strength steel (LYS) are investigated via comparison with those of several common metallic damping materials by tests. Additionally, the boundary constraints of an LYS shear panel damper are studied further. Our experimental results suggest that LYS is an excellent damping material for achieving the lightweight design goal. A novel design of a lightweight damper, having excellent deformation ability and robust mechanical properties, is presented. The findings of this study are expected to be useful in understanding the lightweight design of dampers.

The crosslink density plays a key role in the mechanical response of the amorphous polymers in previous experiments. However, the mechanism of the influence is still not clear. In this paper, the influence of crosslink density on the failure behavior under tension and shear in amorphous polymers is systematically studied using molecular dynamics simulations. The present results indicate that the ultimate stresses and the broken ratios (the broken bond number to all polymer chain number ratios) increase, as well as the ultimate strains decrease with increasing crosslink density. The strain concentration is clearer with the increase of crosslink density. In other words, a higher crosslink density leads to a higher strain concentration. Hence, the higher strain concentration further reduces the fracture strain. This study implies that the mechanical properties of amorphous polymers can be dominated for different applications by altering the molecular architecture.
