The energy crisis and environmental degradation are pressing challenges, intensified by population growth and the excessive generation of solid waste. Converting waste into energy, especially through pyrolysis, is a viable and sustainable alternative. This thermal process transforms waste such as banana peels and used tires into high-value products, such as gas, char, and bio-oil. This study aims to evaluate the production of bio-oil from the pyrolysis and co-pyrolysis of these materials, considering different proportions and temperatures, as well as using an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) to predict the composition of the bio-oils. The pyrolysis tests with 100% banana peel and 75% banana peel mixed with 25% tire showed a decrease in bio-oil yield with increasing temperature, with a drop of around 30% when comparing 500 °C to 400 °C. In contrast, co-pyrolysis with 50% of each material and 100% of the tire resulted in increases in bio-oil yield as the temperature rose. A Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis of the bio-oils showed the presence of relevant functional groups, while an elemental analysis and ANN provided accurate predictions of carbon, hydrogen, and nitrogen content. The results suggest that the co-pyrolysis of waste tires and banana peels is a viable alternative for the production of bio-oil.

Background: Syphilis remains a significant global public health concern, and one of its consequences in pregnant women is the potential occurrence of congenital syphilis due to Treponema pallidum infection. This study determined the prevalence of syphilis among pregnant women undergoing prenatal care in a neighborhood on the outskirts of the city of Belém, Brazilian Amazon. Methods: This cross-sectional study used data from clinical records of 611 pregnant women who underwent prenatal care at a public health unit in 2019 and 2020. The reagent result for VDRL was used as an indicator of syphilis. Odds Ratio and chi-square tests were used to evaluate the association of information from pregnant women with syphilis. Results: The overall prevalence of syphilis was 5.2 % (32/611; 95 % CI: 3.5–7.0 %). Age under 23 years was identified as a risk factor for syphilis. Conclusions: The prevalence of syphilis among pregnant women in the outskirts of Belém is high, especially among younger women. There is an urgent need to intensify innovative sexual and reproductive health education initiatives and emphasize the importance of consistent practice of preventive measures against syphilis and other STIs in the Amazon region, especially in the young population.

Background: Syphilis remains a significant global public health issue, and female sex workers (FSWs) are highly vulnerable to the etiological agent of this disease. This study aimed to describe the prevalence of exposure to Treponema pallidum, as well as the vulnerability factors among FSWs in the state of Pará, Brazilian Amazon. Methods: A cross-sectional, retrospective study involving 360 FSWs from five cities in Pará was conducted from 2005 to 2007. Blood samples were collected for treponemal and non-treponemal testing, and epidemiological information was obtained through interviews. Results: The exposure rate to T. pallidum was 37.7% (136/360), and the majority of FSWs had serological results indicating past exposure (21.1%). Among the FSWs exposed to T. pallidum, most of them were single, aged 23 to 42 years old, had less than 8 years of schooling, and had a family income of between 1 and 3 minimum wages. They reported using condoms during sexual intercourse and had no history of sexually transmitted infection (STI). Furthermore, many of the FSWs exposed to T. pallidum reported having more than 20 sexual partners per month, and had partners from other Brazilian states, but not from other countries. An age over 42 years and a reduced level of education were factors associated with exposure to T. pallidum. Finally, a high rate of exposure to T. pallidum among FSWs in the Brazilian state of Pará (from 2005 to 2007) was detected. In later years, epidemiological studies conducted with FSWs recorded that this rate remained high. Measures to control, treat, and prevent syphilis among FSWs were necessary between 2005 and 2007, and they are still imperative today. Actions related to educational programs and STI control, treatment, and prevention measures contained in Brazilian policies aimed at women’s health have not changed the vulnerability scenario of FSWs regarding their exposure to T. pallidum, even after 16 years, and must be reviewed and adapted to the conditions of the Brazilian Amazon.

This study aims to assess the effectiveness of water-based formulations featuring m-2HEAOL and talc particles in deep drawing applications. The coefficient of friction (COF) was measured through bending under tension (BUT) tests, while the interaction mechanism between protic ionic liquid (PIL) and talc particles was analysed using FTIR, XPS, and TGA analyses. The results indicate that the formulation containing 8 wt% PIL and 0.5 wt% talc exhibited the best lubricating performance. This was due to the interaction of the PIL oleate molecules with the Mg found in the talc basal layer, which enhanced the cleavage capacity of this mineral, ultimately improving the lubricity of the formulation.

Background: Progressive mobility in the ICU has been recommended; however, the definitions of low, moderate, and high mobility in the ICU still diverge between studies. Therefore, our objective was to classify the mobility of the sample from verticalization and active withdrawal from the bed, and from that, to analyze the chances of discharge, death, and readmission to the ICU. Materials and methods: This is an observational and retrospective study that consults the medical records of individuals admitted to the ICU of the University Hospital of Sergipe (HU/SE) between August 2017 and August 2018. Mobility level was classified based on the Intensive Care Unit Mobility Scale (IMS). Results: A total of 121 individuals were included. The mean age was 61.45 ± 16.45, being 53.7% female. Of these, 28 (23.1%) had low mobility, 33 (27.3%) had moderate mobility, and 60 (49.6%) had high mobility. Individuals with low mobility were 45 times more likely to die (OR = 45.3; 95% CI = 3.23–636.3) and 88 times less likely to be discharged from the ICU (OR = 0.22; 95% CI = 0.002–0.30). Conclusion: Those who evolved with low mobility had a higher chance of death and a lower chance of discharge from the ICU. Moderate and high mobility were not associated with the investigated outcomes.

Treatment-resistant depression (TRD), characterized by the failure to achieve symptomatic remission despite multiple pharmacotherapeutic treatments, poses a significant challenge for clinicians. Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is an effective but limited option due to its cognitive side effects. In this context, magnetic seizure therapy (MST) has emerged as a promising alternative, offering comparable antidepressant efficacy with better cognitive outcomes. However, the clinical outcomes and cognitive effects of MST require further investigation. This double-blinded, randomized, non-inferiority study aims to compare the efficacy, tolerability, cognitive adverse effects, and neurophysiological biomarkers of MST with bilateral ECT (BT ECT) in patients with TRD. This study will employ multimodal nuclear magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and serum neurotrophic markers to gain insight into the neurobiological basis of seizure therapy. Additionally, neurophysiological biomarkers will be evaluated as secondary outcomes to predict the antidepressant and cognitive effects of both techniques. The study design, recruitment methods, ethical considerations, eligibility criteria, interventions, and blinding procedures are described. The expected outcomes will advance the field by offering a potential alternative to ECT with improved cognitive outcomes and a better understanding of the underlying pathophysiology of depression and antidepressant therapies.

In this work, an induced pre-saturation tower (IPST) for oil–water separation was built on a semi-industrial scale, based on experimental results obtained on a laboratory scale prototype. The main strategy for generating these criteria was to increase the efficiency of the bench scale prototype, which is limited by conditions of low levels of automation and control, with the use of a biosurfactant as an auxiliary collector. The validation of the developed criteria allowed the construction of an IPST with three stages, all fed with previously saturated effluents. The IPST was built in stainless steel, with multistage centrifugal pumps and adapted to generate microbubbles without the use of saturation tanks or compressors. The most relevant operational parameters were selected using a fractional factorial design, while a central composite rotatable design (CCRD) followed by the application of the desirability function allowed to optimize the conditions for partial and global variables, the latter with desirability of 95%. A nominal flow rate of approximately 1000 L·h−1, a recycle flow rate of 450 L·h−1, a scraper rotation speed of 80 rpm, an average pressure of the microbubble pumps of 11 bar, and an effluent temperature from IPST of about 38 °C ensured optimized operation for the proposed technological development.

Isolated ultrasonic vibrations were used to treat feed water from a 20 bar steam-producing water tube boiler. Physical treatments such as ultrasounds and reverse osmosis (RO) are recommended as the most eco-friendly for this purpose. A novel bench-scale prototype delivering 6 L/h of treated water was designed and built. The ultrasonic atomization of raw water with 1.7 MHz piezoelectric transducers and subsequent humidification and dehumidification of drag airflow was the innovating sequence of operations used as a treatment technique. To ensure greater humidification capacity to the drag air, the energy available from the thermal inertia of the liquid column (raw water) in the prototype vaporization chamber was used to heat this air flow. After a single pass of raw water through the bench-scale prototype, a 98.0% reduction in conductivity and a 99.0% decrease in the content of total dissolved solids were obtained at a drag air temperature of 70 °C. Compared to RO, two of the main advantages of the proposed ultrasonic wave method are the elimination of the use of chemical agents in the pre-treatment phase and a significant reduction in maintenance costs by membrane replacement.

The present study aimed at analyzing the serum levels of mannose-binding lectin (MBL) and ficolin-3 (FCN3) in leprosy patients and their healthy family contacts in a hyperendemic region in northeastern Brazil. A cross-sectional study was carried out with 90 patients who had been diagnosed with leprosy and 79 healthy family contacts. Serum levels of the MBL and FCN3 proteins were measured using the immunofluorometric assay (ELISA). Clinical information was determined from the patients’ charts. It was observed that the leprosy patients were more likely to be male (OR = 2.17; p = 0.01) and younger than fifteen years of age (OR = 2.01; p = 0.03) when compared to the family contacts. Those under 15 years of age had higher levels of MBL (4455 ng/mL) than those over 15 years of age (2342 ng/mL; p = 0.018). Higher FCN3 levels were identified in patients with indeterminate leprosy (41.9 µg/mL) compared to those with the lepromatous form (34.3 µg/mL; p = 0.033) and in those with no physical disabilities (38.1 µg/mL) compared to those with some disability (p = 0.031). Higher FCN3 levels were also observed in the group of patients without leprosy reactions (37.4 µg/mL) compared to those with type 1 (33.7 µg/mL) and type 2 (36.1 µg/mL) reactions. The MBL levels were higher in children under 15 years of age than they were in adults. It was evidenced that higher FCN3 serum levels were associated with early and transient clinical forms and lower expression in severe forms of leprosy.

Metabolomic analysis provides a wealth of information that can be predictive of distinctive phenotypes of pathogenic processes and has been applied to better understand disease development. Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune disease with the establishment of chronic synovial inflammation that affects joints and peripheral tissues such as skeletal muscle and bone. There is a lack of useful disease biomarkers to track disease activity, drug response and follow-up in RA. In this review, we describe potential metabolic biomarkers that might be helpful in the study of RA pathogenesis, drug response and risk of comorbidities. TMAO (choline and trimethylamine oxide) and TCA (tricarboxylic acid) cycle products have been suggested to modulate metabolic profiles during the early stages of RA and are present systemically, which is a relevant characteristic for biomarkers. Moreover, the analysis of lipids such as cholesterol, FFAs and PUFAs may provide important information before disease onset to predict disease activity and treatment response. Regarding therapeutics, TNF inhibitors may increase the levels of tryptophan, valine, lysine, creatinine and alanine, whereas JAK/STAT inhibitors may modulate exclusively fatty acids. These observations indicate that different disease modifying antirheumatic drugs have specific metabolic profiles and can reveal differences between responders and non-responders. In terms of comorbidities, physical impairment represented by higher fatigue scores and muscle wasting has been associated with an increase in urea cycle, FFAs, tocopherols and BCAAs. In conclusion, synovial fluid, blood and urine samples from RA patients seem to provide critical information about the metabolic profile related to drug response, disease activity and comorbidities.

The microgrid system is an answer to the necessity of increasing renewable energy penetration and also works as a bridge for the future smart grid. Considering the microgrid system applied to commercial building equipped with photovoltaic sources, the usage of a DC microgrid architecture can improve the efficiency of the system, while ensuring robustness and reducing the overall energy cost. Given the power grid stress and the intermittency of the DC microgrid power production, backup power provision and load shedding operations may occur to stabilize the DC bus voltage. Based on the knapsack problem formulation, this paper presents a realistic optimization approach to shedding a building’s appliances, considering the priority of each appliance, and also considering a minimum amount of load that must be attended. The problem is solved by mixed integer linear programming and the CPLEX solver. The proposed architecture ensures critical load supply and voltage stabilization through the real-time operation of the operational algorithm allowing the load shedding optimization approach to be applied without compromising the robustness of the system. The results obtained by simulation prove that the DC microgrid is able to supply the building power network by applying the load shedding optimization program to overcome, mainly, the renewable energy intermittency.
