In this entry, the possibility of the implementation of a biorefinery based on multiple raw materials (from agricultural wastes, vegetable oils, etc.) is covered, pointing out the available technology to interconnect different processes so that the atom economy of the process is as high as possible, reducing the environmental impact and improving the efficiency of the energy or products obtained. For this purpose, this model is based on previous works published in the literature. The role of biorefineries is becoming more and more important in the current environmental scenario, as there is a global concern about different environmental issues such as climate change due to GHG emissions, among others. In this sense, a biorefinery presents several advantages such as the use of natural raw materials or wastes, with high atom economy values (that is, all the products are valorized and not released to the environment). As a consequence, the concept of a biorefinery perfectly fits with the Sustainable Development Goals, contributing to the sustainable growth of different regions or countries, regardless of their stage of development. The aim of this entry is the proposal of a biorefinery based on multiple raw materials, using different technologies such as transesterification to produce both biodiesel and biolubricants, steam reforming to produce hydrogen from glycerol or biogas, hydrothermal carbonization of sewage sludge to produce hydrochar, etc. As a result, these technologies have potential for the possible implementation of this biorefinery at the industrial scale, with high conversion and efficiency for most processes included in this biorefinery. However, there are some challenges like the requirement of the further technological development of certain processes. In conclusion, the proposed biorefinery offers a wide range of possibilities to enhance the production of energy and materials (hydrogen, biodiesel, biolubricants, different biofuels, hydrochar, etc.) through green technologies, being an alternative for petrol-based refineries.

This review provides a comprehensive summary of evidence to explore the role and value of differential diagnosis in the management of Acute Respiratory Infections (ARIs) through point-of-care (POC) rapid testing in a post-pandemic scenario, paying particular attention to coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), influenza, and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). The document builds on a review of literature and policies and a process of validation and feedback by a group of seven experts from Latin America (LATAM). Evidence was collected to understand scientific and policy perspectives on the differential diagnosis of ARIs and POC rapid testing, with a focus on seven countries: Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Mexico, and Peru. The evidence indicates that POC rapid testing can serve to improve ARI case management, epidemiological surveillance, research and innovation, and evidence-based decision-making. With multiple types of rapid tests available for POC, decisions regarding which tests to use require the consideration of the testing purpose, available resources, and test characteristics regarding accuracy, accessibility, affordability, and results turnaround time. Based on the understanding of the current situation, this document provides a set of recommendations for the implementation of POC rapid testing in LATAM, supporting decision-making and guiding efforts by a broad range of stakeholders.

Biodiesel and biolubricants play strategic roles in green technologies, as they can be produced in biorefineries. The design of industrial facilities is essential to assess the industrial implementation of these processes, with few studies about this subject in the literature. The aim of this work was to produce biodiesel and a biolubricant from waste cooking oil through double transesterification with methanol and trimethylolpropane, obtaining high conversion values (>97 and 98%, respectively). The biolubricant (characterized according to the UNE-14214 standard) had a density of 951 kg·m−3, a viscosity of 127 cSt (at 40 °C), an acidity value of 0.43 mgKOH·g−1, flash and combustion points of 225 and 232 °C, and an oxidation stability of 6 h through the Rancimat method. Also, a kinetic study was carried out (at temperatures ranging from 80 to 140 °C and with catalyst concentrations from 0.3 to 0.9% w/w and working pressures from 210 to 760 mmHg) to establish the main kinetic parameters, obtaining a second-order reaction and an activation energy of 17.8 kJ·mol−1. Finally, a conceptual design was included, considering the main components of the facility. Thus, the projected plant worked in a discontinuous regime (producing 2 cubic meters per day), pointing out the feasibility of this plant at an industrial scale.

This study examined the role of fluoroethylene carbonate (FEC) in stabilizing the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) and enhancing the electrochemical performance of SiOx-based composite negative electrodes in lithium-ion batteries. Two electrolyte systems were used: 1.0 mol dm−3 (M) LiPF6 in a mixture of ethylene carbonate (EC) and ethyl methyl carbonate (EMC) with 0.5 wt.% VC, and 1.0 M LiPF6 in a mixture of EC and EMC with 1.0 wt.% VC and 10 wt.% FEC. These systems enabled the investigation of how FEC contributes to SEI stabilization and cycling stability. FEC promotes the formation of a LiF-rich SEI layer, which mitigates volume expansion and enhances capacity retention. Additionally, the accumulation of Li2CO3 and Li2O in the SEI was found to increase interfacial resistance, as observed through electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). Among the SiOx contents tested (0%, 3%, and 7.8%), the 3% SiOx content exhibited the best balance between SiOx and carbon nanotubes, resulting in improved SEI formation and enhanced electrochemical performance. These results offer insights into the optimization of electrolyte formulations for long-term cycling stability in SiOx-based lithium-ion batteries.

The current energy scenario requires the use of alternatives for petrol-based products. In this context, the role of biodiesel and biolubricants can be promising, offering multiple advantages but also some challenges like their low oxidation stability. The use of antioxidants can offset this disadvantage, improving the general performance of these products during storage or usage. The aim of this work was to assess the combined and separate use of two different antioxidants (propyl gallate, PG, and tert-butylhydroquinone, TBHQ) on biodiesel and biolubricant based on waste cooking oil (WCO), carrying out a thorough characterization of these products and quantification of antioxidants through voltammetry techniques. Thus, the innovation of this work consists in the use of combined antioxidants and its simultaneous quality assessment and quantification. As a result, the combined use of antioxidants did not offer a synergistic effect, and the use of PG at low concentrations (300 ppm) is recommended in the case of WCO biolubricant. Voltammetry was a suitable and fast method to quantify both PG and TBHQ.

The use of sustainable energy sources is an alternative for fossil fuels, which can represent a positive factor to alleviate many current environmental issues. In that sense, not only sustainable industrial development is important, but also sustainable practices at the local level, including households. Specifically, heating and cooking are one of the most important activities that require energy in households, where the role of biomass could be of interest, as it can provide an energy source with lower environmental impact. However, there is room for improvement in biomass stoves, whose adaptability to specific wastes, as well as their improvement in efficiency, should be accomplished. The aim of this work was to assess the improvement of combustion performance of a domestic stove by the implementation of a programmable logic converter for a better adaptation to different biomass samples (holm oak, pear tree, poplar, and sugarcane bagasse pellets). This work provides further information about the current working protocol, being an alternative for better approaches that could be implemented in future works. Thus, the working regime of the stove was controlled, especially concerning the screw conveyor (to regulate pellet feeding) and flue gas fan (to change oxygen supply). As a result, better combustion performances were obtained, with heat capacities from 5.66 to 8.67 kW for the selected samples. Also, thermal capacities of the stove (1.43, 1.60, 2.22, and 1.83 kW for holm oak, pear tree, poplar, and sugarcane bagasse, respectively) were obtained, with a better combustion performance compared to previous studies (1600 and 120 ppm peak emissions for CO and NOx, respectively, and 15% as the lowest O2 concentration). On the other hand, different improvements of the combustion stove to avoid blockages, for instance, are proposed as further steps.

Computer vision has advanced much in recent years. Several tasks, such as image recognition, classification, or image restoration, are regularly solved with applications using artificial intelligence techniques. Image restoration comprises different use cases such as style transferring, improvement of quality resolution, or completing missing parts. The latter is also known as image inpainting, virtual image inpainting in this case, which consists of reconstructing missing regions or elements. This paper explores how to evaluate the performance of a deep learning method to do virtual image inpainting to reconstruct missing architectonical elements in images of ruined Greek temples to measure the performance of different activation functions. Unlike a previous study related to this work, a direct reconstruction process without segmented images was used. Then, two evaluation methods are presented: the objective one (mathematical metrics) and an expert (visual perception) evaluation to measure the performance of the different approaches. Results conclude that ReLU outperforms other activation functions, while Mish and Leaky ReLU perform poorly, and Swish’s professional evaluations highlight a gap between mathematical metrics and human visual perception.

Objective: To analyze the spatial pattern of the incidence of COVID-19 in association with social determinants of health (SDH) in the Northeast Region of Brazil during the first year of the pandemic. Methods: We conducted an ecological analytical study that included notifications made between 27 March 2020 and 27 March 2021. The data analysis used two global regression models: the ordinary least squares (OLS) and spatial lag model and the geographically weighted multiscale regression model (GWMSR). Results: We observed that the Gini index, illiteracy rate, percentages of people living below the poverty line, people in households who were vulnerable to poverty, and dependent elderly people are predictors of a higher incidence of COVID-19 in Northeast Brazil. Conclusions: Results of this study may contribute to generating new hypotheses for studies focusing on the syndemic process and for the formulation of intersectoral public policies targeting the population at greatest vulnerability to minimize the impact of the disease.

The use of alternatives for petroleum-based products is becoming more and more important, especially considering the new and constantly changing geopolitical context, where excessive energy dependence is not desirable. Thus, biodiesel could play an important role in contributing to the implementation of biorefineries, which represent desirable goals in terms of sustainability, green chemistry and the circular economy. However, one challenge related to biodiesel based on vegetable oils is its low oxidative stability, which can alter the properties of these products during storage. To avoid this problem, interesting antioxidants, such as propyl gallate (PG), could be added to biodiesel to allow it to keep its main properties during oxidation. Additionally, monitoring PG content during oxidation is interesting, and the use of voltammetry could be suitable for this purpose. The aim of this work was to assess the effectiveness of PG during cardoon biodiesel oxidation, while monitoring the process through cyclic voltammetry (CV). As a result, it was proven that PG was highly effective, increasing the length of oxidative stability to more than 10 h at low concentrations (600 mg·L−1) and retaining its main properties (viscosity and acidity) during oxidation. Regarding CV, this technique was successfully optimized to determine PG concentration in cardoon biodiesel during oxidation.

Studies on adolescent rats, when body composition is changing deeply, reveal that the administration of sodium selenite and selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs), at the same dose, have opposite effects on adipogenesis in white adipose tissue (WAT). To investigate the mechanisms involved in these contrasting effects by means of transcriptomic analysis, three groups of male adolescent rats (n = 18) were used: control (C), selenite supplemented (S), and SeNPs supplemented (NS). Both treated groups received a twofold increase in Se dose compared to the control group through water intake for three weeks. Following treatment, WAT was removed and frozen at −80 °C until subsequent use for RNA extraction, endogenous antioxidant enzymatic activities determination, and quantification of H2O2 and malondialdehyde. NS rats displayed a larger number of differentially expressed genes and cellular processes impacted than S rats. Remarkably, these changes involved upregulation of gene expression associated with the immune system, catabolism, mitochondrial function, and oxidative balance. NS rats presented an increase in antioxidant enzymes activity, alongside an accumulation of H2O2 and malondialdehyde levels. The expression level of 81 genes related to oxidative stress was significantly affected in NS rats. Analyzing the KEGG pathway enrichment revealed that NS rats exhibited increased activity in key catabolic pathways and decreased activity in crucial growth signaling processes. These changes contribute to the mass decrease in WAT found in NS rats. These results suggest a possible application of SeNPs in WAT reduction and induction of the immune response during adolescence.

This study investigated the influence of variations in the mixing ratio of ethylene carbonate (EC) to ethyl methyl carbonate (EMC) on the composition and effectiveness of the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) in lithium-metal batteries. The SEI is crucial for battery performance, as it prevents continuous electrolyte decomposition and inhibits the growth of lithium dendrites, which can cause internal short circuits leading to battery failure. Although the properties of the SEI largely depend on the electrolyte solvent, the influence of the EC:EMC ratio on SEI properties has not yet been elucidated. Through electrochemical testing, ionic conductivity measurements, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, the formation of Li2CO3, LiF, and organolithium compounds on lithium surfaces was systematically analyzed. This study demonstrated that the EC:EMC ratio significantly affected the SEI structure, primarily owing to the promotion of the formation of a denser SEI layer. Specifically, the ratios of 1:1 and 1:3 facilitated a uniform distribution and prevalence of Li2CO3 and LiF throughout the SEI, thereby affecting cell performance. Thus, precise control of the EC:EMC ratio is essential for enhancing the mechanical robustness and electrochemical stability of the SEI, thereby providing valuable insights into the factors that either enhance or impede effective SEI formation.

Cu2ZnSnSe4 (CZTSe) nanoparticles (NPs) were successfully synthesized via a solvothermal method. Their structural, compositional, morphological, optoelectronic, and electrochemical properties have been characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM), UV–vis absorption spectroscopy, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) techniques. Porosimetry and specific surface area in terms of the Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) technique have also been studied. XRD indicates the formation of a polycrystalline kesterite CZTSe phase. Raman peaks at 173 and 190 cm−1 confirm the formation of a pure phase. TEM micrographs revealed the presence of nanoparticles with average sizes of ~90 nm. A BET surface area of 7 m2/g was determined. The CZTSe NPs showed a bandgap of 1.0 eV and a p-type semiconducting behavior. As a proof of concept, for the first time, the CZTSe NPs have been used as a visible-light-driven photocatalyst to Congo red (CR) azo dye degradation. The nanophotocatalyst material under simulated sunlight results in almost complete degradation (96%) of CR dye after 70 min, following a pseudo-second-order kinetic model (rate constant of 0.334 min−1). The prepared CZTSe was reusable and can be repeatedly used to remove CR dye from aqueous solutions.

This review aims to explore the role of professional diagnostic rapid testing of acute respiratory infections (ARIs), especially COVID-19 and influenza, ensuring proper disease management and treatment in Europe, and particularly in Czech Republic, Poland, and Romania. The paper was constructed based on a review of scientific evidence and national and international policies and recommendations, as well as a process of validation by four experts. The development of new testing technologies, treatment options, and increased awareness of the negative multidimensional impact of ARI profiles transformed differential diagnosis into a tangible and desirable reality. This review covers the following topics: (1) the multidimensional impact of ARIs, (2) ARI rapid diagnostic testing platforms and their value, (3) the policy landscape, (4) challenges and barriers to implementation, and (5) a set of recommendations illustrating a path forward. The findings indicate that rapid diagnostic testing, including at the point of care (POC), can have a positive impact on case management, antimicrobial and antibiotic stewardship, epidemiological surveillance, and decision making. Integrating this strategy will require the commitment of governments and the international and academic communities, especially as we identified room for improvement in the access and expansion of POC rapid testing in the focus countries and the inclusion of rapid testing in relevant policies.

The aim of this study was to develop a plant-based fermented beverage from discarded bread flour and to analyze its characteristics as a novel functional product. Eight cereal-based probiotic beverages were produced by inoculating discarded bread flour with a monoculture of Lactobacillus rhamnosus or a co-culture consisting of lactic acid bacteria and Bifidobacterium. Two additional factors, namely, the addition of amylolytic enzymes and matrix desalting, were studied alongside the type of culture. The organic acid content and microbial growth were monitored during fermentation and storage (15 and 21 days). Proximal composition, gamma-aminobutyric acid, and volatile compounds were measured in the final product. Sensory analysis was only conducted on the enzymatically treated samples. The estimated shelf life of the bread beverage was 15 days. The variables studied significantly influenced the amountof organic acids and specific volatile compounds responsible for the aroma of fermented beverages. The beverage produced via co-culturing was preferred by consumers in the sensory test.

This paper provides a comprehensive summary of evidence to explore and position the role of serology testing in the context of coronavirus disease 19 (COVID-19) immunization and policy response in the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region. The document builds on a review of academic literature and existing policies followed by a process of discussion, validation, and feedback by a group of six experts. Six countries and territories—Australia, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Thailand, and Taiwan—were sampled to highlight the differing contexts and scenarios in the region. The review includes an overview of (1) the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, including the emergence of Variants of Concern (VOCs), especially Omicron, (2) the introduction of immunization, (3) the available testing options and potential use of serology testing, (4) the landscape of guidelines and recommendations for their use, and (5) the barriers and challenges to implementing serology testing as a tool to support COVID-19 immunization. Based on the findings, the co-authors propose a set of recommendations to resolve knowledge gaps, to include the use of serology testing as part of the policy response, and to ensure adequate means of implementation. This paper’s target audience includes members of the academic community, medical societies, health providers and practitioners, and decision-makers.

This paper presents an approach to enhancing the clarity and intelligibility of speech in digital communications compromised by various background noises. Utilizing deep learning techniques, specifically a Variational Autoencoder (VAE) with 2D convolutional filters, we aim to suppress background noise in audio signals. Our method focuses on four simulated environmental noise scenarios: storms, wind, traffic, and aircraft. The training dataset has been obtained from public sources (TED-LIUM 3 dataset, which includes audio recordings from the popular TED-TALK series) combined with these background noises. The audio signals were transformed into 2D power spectrograms, upon which our VAE model was trained to filter out the noise and reconstruct clean audio. Our results demonstrate that the model outperforms existing state-of-the-art solutions in noise suppression. Although differences in noise types were observed, it was challenging to definitively conclude which background noise most adversely affects speech quality. The results have been assessed with objective (mathematical metrics) and subjective (listening to a set of audios by humans) methods. Notably, wind noise showed the smallest deviation between the noisy and cleaned audio, perceived subjectively as the most improved scenario. Future work should involve refining the phase calculation of the cleaned audio and creating a more balanced dataset to minimize differences in audio quality across scenarios. Additionally, practical applications of the model in real-time streaming audio are envisaged. This research contributes significantly to the field of audio signal processing by offering a deep learning solution tailored to various noise conditions, enhancing digital communication quality.

Quantum technologies promise major advances in different areas. From computation to sensing or telecommunications, quantum implementations could bring significant improvements to these fields, arousing the interest of researchers, companies, and governments. In particular, the deployment of Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) networks, which enable the secure dissemination of cryptographic keys to remote application entities following Quantum Mechanics Principles, appears to be one of the most attractive and relevant use cases. Quantum devices and equipment are still in a development phase, making their availability low and their price high, hindering the deployment of physical QKD networks and, therefore, the research and experimentation activities related to this field. In this context, this paper focuses on providing research stakeholders with an open-access testbed where it is feasible to emulate the deployment of QKD networks, thus enabling the execution of experiments and trials, where even potential network attacks can be analyzed, without the quantum physical equipment requirement, nor compromising the integrity of an already built QKD network. The designed solution allows users to automatically deploy, configure, and run a digital twin environment of a QKD network, offering cost-effectiveness and great flexibility in the study of the integration of quantum communications in the current network infrastructures. This solution is aligned with the European Telecommunications Standard Institute (ETSI) standardized application interface for QKD, and is built upon open-source technologies. The feasibility of this solution has been validated throughout several functional trials carried out in the 5G Telefónica Open Network Innovation Centre (5TONIC), verifying the service performance in terms of speed and discarded qubits when generating the quantum keys.

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a chronic gastrointestinal inflammation with unpredictable symptom fluctuations. While there is no effective cure for IBD, various treatments aim to manage symptoms and improve the quality of life for affected individuals. In recent years, there has been growing interest in the potential benefits of certain natural plants and herbs in the management of IBD. In this regard, this study aimed to evaluate the immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory effects of a well-characterized extract of Salvia verbenaca (S. verbenaca) in an experimental model of colitis in rats. Interestingly, the daily administration of S. verbenaca (10 and 25 mg/kg) effectively alleviated colitis symptoms, as evidenced by reduced weight/length ratio and colonic damage. Moreover, it reduced oxidative stress markers (MPO and GSH), decreased pro-inflammatory cytokine expression (Il-6, Il-12a, Il-1β, Il-23, Icam-1, Mcp-1, Cinc-1), and preserved the integrity of the intestinal barrier (Villin, Muc-2, Muc-3). These effects suggest S. verbenaca extract could represent a potential complementary candidate to treat gastrointestinal disorders. Its beneficial actions can be related to its antioxidant properties as well as the downregulation of the immune response, which can result in the improvement in the intestine epithelial barrier.

This study focuses on improving the second fermentation and the in-bottle ageing over lees process for 9 and 21 months of a red sparkling wine. The aim of the study was to enhance wine quality and try to make it more pleasant for consumers. For this purpose, four different yeast derivatives (yeast walls, yeast walls with tannins, inactivated yeasts and mannoproteins) and β-glucanases were added to a red base sparkling wine and were aged over lees during two different periods: 9 and 21 months. Oenological parameters, total polysaccharides, total proteins, free amino nitrogen, phenolic composition, foaming properties, and volatile compounds were analysed in conjunction with a sensory evaluation. Results show the different incidences of the studied adjuvants on the final parameters, highlighting the importance of the interactions of the studied adjuvants over time. In fact, time itself turned out to be one of the main factors affecting the final characteristics of the wine, so influencing consumers’ opinions and modifying the wine’s acceptability and quality.

Neurodegenerative diseases are associated with oxidative stress, due to an imbalance in the oxidation-reduction reactions at the cellular level. Various treatments are available to treat these diseases, although they often do not cure them and have many adverse effects. Therefore, it is necessary to find complementary and/or alternative drugs that replace current treatments with fewer side effects. It has been demonstrated that natural products derived from plants, specifically phenolic compounds, have a great capacity to suppress oxidative stress and neutralize free radicals thus, they may be used as alternative alternative pharmacological treatments for pathological conditions associated with an increase in oxidative stress. The plant species that dominate the Mediterranean ecosystems are characterized by having a wide variety of phenolic compound content. Therefore, these species might be important sources of neuroprotective biomolecules. To evaluate this potential, 24 typical plant species of the Mediterranean ecosystems were selected, identifying the most important compounds present in them. This set of plant species provides a total of 403 different compounds. Of these compounds, 35.7% are phenolic acids and 55.6% are flavonoids. The most relevant of these compounds are gallic, vanillic, caffeic, chlorogenic, p-coumaric, and ferulic acids, apigenin, kaempferol, myricitrin, quercetin, isoquercetin, quercetrin, rutin, catechin and epicatechin, which are widely distributed among the analyzed plant species (in over 10 species) and which have been involved in the literature in the prevention of different neurodegenerative pathologies. It is also important to mention that three of these plant species, Pistacea lentiscus, Lavandula stoechas and Thymus vulgaris, have most of the described compounds with protective properties against neurodegenerative diseases. The present work shows that the plant species that dominate the studied geographic area can provide an important source of phenolic compounds for the pharmacological and biotechnological industry to prepare extracts or isolated compounds for therapy against neurodegenerative diseases.

Selective enhancement of wine aroma was achieved using a broad spectrum of exogenous glycosidases. Eight different enzyme preparations were added to Verdejo wine, resulting in an increase in the levels of varietal volatile compounds compared to the control wine after 15 days of treatment. The enzyme preparations studied were robust under winemaking conditions (sulfur dioxide, reducing sugars, and alcohol content), and no inhibition of β-glucosidase activity was observed. Significant differences were detected in four individual terpenes (α-terpineol, terpinen-4-ol, α-pinene, and citronellal) and benzyl alcohol in all the treated wines compared to the control wine, contributing to the final wine to varying degrees. In addition, a significant increase in the other aromatic compounds was observed, which showed different patterns depending on the enzyme preparation that was tested. The principal component analysis of the data revealed the possibility of modulating the different aromatic profiles of the final wines depending on the enzyme preparation used. Taking these results into account, enhancement of the floral, balsamic, and/or fruity notes of wines is possible by using a suitable commercial enzyme preparation.

Plexcitonic systems based on metal nanostructures and molecular J-aggregates offer an excellent opportunity to explore the intriguing interplay between plasmonic excitations and excitons, offering unique insights into light–matter interactions at the nanoscale. Their potential applications in photocatalysis have prompted a growing interest in both their synthesis and the analysis of their properties. However, in order to construct a high-performing system, it is essential to ensure chemical and spectral compatibility between both components. We present the results of a study into a hybrid system, achieved through the coupling of gold nanobipyramids with organic molecules, and demonstrate the strengthened photochemical properties of such a system in comparison with purely J-aggregates. Our analysis includes the absorbance and photoluminescence characterization of the system, revealing the remarkable plexcitonic interaction and pronounced coupling effect. The absorbance spectroscopy of the hybrid systems enabled the investigation of the coupling strength (g). Additionally, the photoluminescence response of the J-aggregates and coupled systems reveals the impact of the coupling regime. Utilizing fluorescence lifetime imaging microscopy, we established how the photoluminescence lifetime components of the J-aggregates are affected within the plexcitonic system. Finally, to assess the photodegradation of J-aggregates and plexcitonic systems, we conducted a comparative analysis. Our findings reveal that plasmon-enhanced interactions lead to improved photostability in hybrid systems.

The global energy scenario is becoming a vital aspect of the sustainable economic development of regions and countries. Current changes in energy production, mainly due to scarcity and geopolitical factors, have proven the need for changes in energy distribution towards a lower energy dependence. Moreover, a considerable amount of biomass waste is generated in many regions, because of agro-industrial activities, whose management could contribute to energy production. The aim of this work was to study the optimization of the combustion process in a biomass stove by using different raw materials as fuels, such as pine, poplar, and plum tree pellets. For that purpose, power, excess air, and biomass content were optimized, among other parameters, and exhaust gases were analyzed with a Testo 335 analyzer, while temperatures were recorded with temperature probes. In conclusion, high yields were found for the optimized parameters of the studied biomass products (ranging from 91.1% for poplar pellets to 92.34% for pine pellets), making these three biomass fuels suitable for combustion in the abovementioned stove. Also, increasing biomass flow by 25% in the stove contributed to a higher efficiency of the process, especially in the case of plum tree pellets.

Soil characteristics, land management practices, and plant genotypes influence arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) communities, leading to the proliferation of AMF taxa with different growth and nutritional outcomes in their hosts. However, the specific patterns driving these relationships are still not well understood. This study aimed to (1) evaluate the influence of soil characteristics, land use, and rootstock on AMF diversity and community structure and (2) assess the effect of those AMF communities on grapevine growth and nutrition. Soil samples were collected from vineyard and non-agricultural areas in Lisbon and Pegões, Portugal, and trap cultures established using Richter 110 and 1103 Paulsen rootstocks. After 3.5 months growth under greenhouse conditions, root-associated AMF communities were assessed by amplicon metagenomic sequencing using AMF-specific primers. Alpha diversity was only influenced by the soil type, while in β-diversity, an interaction was found between the soil type and land use. Both diversity measures were positively correlated with foliar K and negatively with leaf Mn and Mg. Notably, the concentrations of these nutrients were highly correlated with the relative abundance of operational taxonomic units (OTUs) within the genera Glomus, Rhizophagus, and Claroideoglomus. These results are valuable for supporting AMF selection for improved plant nutrition based on varying soil types and land uses.

Two strains of Saccharomyces cerevisiae (Sc01 and Sc02) and one strain of Wickerhamomyces anomalus (Wa) were isolated from organic Verdejo spontaneous fermentations and used for the development of experimental winemaking. Sc01 and Sc02 represented 52.7% of the population of the Saccharomyces strains isolated throughout the fermentation process. W. anomalus appeared as the predominant species among the non-Saccharomyces yeasts. Wa turned out to be the strain of this species with the shortest lag phase and positive enzymatic activities, and it was selected for white wine production. Fermentations with unique inoculation of S. cerevisiae strains were compared with sequential inoculation with W. anomalus. The results showed that the sequential inoculations did not affect the fermentation kinetics or physicochemical characteristics of the wines compared with the unique inoculations. However, this study identified a significant impact on the aromatic profiles of the produced wines due to the sequential inoculations. This modification resulted in a similar new aromatic profile in both sequential inoculations, demonstrating common characteristics related to the contribution of W. anomalus. In general, the sequential fermentations were mainly characterized by lower levels of acetate esters and an increase in ethyl acetate levels, whereas lower levels of ethyl octanoate and ethyl dec-9-enoate were detected. Propan-1-ol and butan-1-ol showed an increase in the sequential fermentations, while 4-methylpentan-1-ol and 2-phenylethanol were found in lower concentrations. These results highlight the great influence that the presence of specific strains of native non-Saccharomyces yeasts exerts on the characteristics of elaborate wines.

The NOTION trial compares transcatheter aortic valve implantation versus surgical aortic valve replacement in low-risk patients. Looking carefully at the outcomes of this trial, there is no doubt that the transcatheter aortic valve implantation results were outstanding. The same thing cannot be said for the results of the surgery. We tried to understand the reason for that.

Currently, non-Saccharomyces yeasts are the subject of interest, among other things, for their contribution to the aromatic complexity of wines. In this study, the characterisation of non-Saccharomyces yeasts was addressed by their isolation during spontaneous fermentations of organic Verdejo grapes, obtaining a total of 484 isolates, of which 11% were identified by molecular techniques as non-Saccharomyces yeasts. Fermentative isolates belonging to the species Hanseniaspora meyeri, Hanseniaspora osmophila, Pichia guilliermondii, Pichia kudriavzevii, Torulaspora delbrueckii, and Wickerhamomyces anomalus were analysed. Significant differences were found in the yeast populations established at the different fermentation stages. Interestingly, W. anomalus stood up as a widely distributed species in vineyards, vintages, and fermentation stages. Several of the strains studied stood out for their biotechnological potential in the production of Verdejo wine, showing the presence of relevant enzymatic activity for the release of varietal aromas and the technological improvement of the winemaking process. Three enzymatic activities were found in an important number of isolates, β-glucosidase, protease, and β-lyase, implicated in the positive aromatic impact on this style of white wine. In that sense, all the isolates of W. anomalus presented those activities. T. delbrueckii isolates were highlighted for their significant β-lyase activity. In addition, T. delbrueckii was outlined because of its potential to achieve an elevated fermenting power, as well as the lack of lag phase. The results obtained highlight the importance of maintaining the microbial diversity that contributes to the production of wines with unique and distinctive characteristics of the production region.

This study explores the potential of titanium disulfide (TiS2) as an active material for aqueous calcium-ion batteries (CIBs). We investigate the electrochemical redox reactions of calcium ions within TiS2 and assess its suitability for use in aqueous CIBs. Additionally, we examine the impact of varying electrolyte concentrations, ranging from 1.0 to 8.0 mol dm−3, on TiS2 electrode reactions. Our findings reveal that TiS2 exhibits distinct charge–discharge behaviors in various aqueous calcium-ion electrolytes. Notably, at higher electrolyte concentrations, TiS2 effectively suppresses the hydrogen generation reaction caused by water decomposition. In situ X-ray diffraction analysis confirms the intercalation of Ca2+ ions between the TiS2 layers during charging, which is a groundbreaking discovery, signifying TiS2’s applicability in aqueous CIBs. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis further supports the formation of a solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) on the TiS2 electrode surface, contributing to the suppression of electrolyte decomposition reactions. Furthermore, we investigate the influence of anions in the electrolyte on charge–discharge behavior. Our findings suggest that the choice of anion coordinated with Ca2+ ions affects the SEI formation and cycling performance. Understanding the role of anions in SEI formation is crucial for optimizing aqueous CIBs. In conclusion, this research underscores TiS2’s potential as an active material for aqueous calcium-ion batteries and emphasizes the importance of the electrolyte composition in influencing SEI formation and battery performance, contributing to sustainable and efficient energy storage technologies.

The alternative oxidase (AOX) is a ubiquinol oxidase with a crucial role in the mitochondrial alternative respiratory pathway, which is associated with various processes in plants. In this study, the activity of AOX in pea seed germination was determined in two pea cultivars, ‘Maravilha d’América’ (MA) and ‘Torta de Quebrar’ (TQ), during a germination trial using cytochrome oxidase (COX) and AOX inhibitors [rotenone (RT) and salicylic hydroxamic acid (SHAM), respectively]. Calorespirometry was used to assess respiratory changes during germination. In both cultivars, SHAM had a greater inhibitory effect on germination than RT, demonstrating the involvement of AOX in germination. Although calorespirometry did not provide direct information on the involvement of the alternative pathway in seed germination, this methodology was valuable for distinguishing cultivars. To gain deeper insights into the role of AOX in seed germination, the AOX gene family was characterized, and the gene expression pattern was evaluated. Three PsAOX members were identified—PsAOX1, PsAOX2a and PsAOX2b—and their expression revealed a marked genotype effect. This study emphasizes the importance of AOX in seed germination, contributing to the understanding of the role of the alternative respiratory pathway in plants.

Hydrogen as an energy vector is going to play an important role in the global energy mix. On the other hand, wastewater management has become a worldwide concern, as urban settlements have been considerably increasing for decades. Consequently, biodigestion to produce biogas (rich in methane) in water treatment plants could be an interesting starting point to obtain a valuable gas that can be converted into hydrogen through steam reforming. The aim of this work was to review the main aspects concerning steam reforming of biogas from wastewater treatment plants. For this purpose, the whole chain, from water treatment to hydrogen production and purification, was considered, paying attention to the main challenges and new technologies for its optimization. Thus, a wide range of possibilities is offered, from direct energy use of syngas to high purification of hydrogen (mainly through pressure swing adsorption or membrane reactors), presenting advantages and disadvantages. In any case, the role of catalysts seems to be essential, and aspects such as hydrogen sulfide and coke deposition control should be addressed. In conclusion, biogas steam reforming applied to wastewater treatment plants is a reality, with serious possibilities for its global implementation at the industrial level, according to techno-economic assessment.

One of the main environmental problems is the use of oil for fuel and plastic production, implying the increase in pollutants that might contribute to the greenhouse gas effect, among others. Thus, the use of vegetable oils to produce biodiesel can be interesting, as it is biodegradable and less pollutant compared to diesel fuels, presenting higher flash and combustion points. Moreover, biodiesel production could take part in a biorefinery concept, to produce products such as biolubricants and obtain interesting byproducts that can be reused (such as methanol) or upgraded for energy or pharmaceutical purposes (like glycerol). Consequently, the valorization of these byproducts could contribute to the higher energy efficiency of the process, improving the atom economy. The aim of this work was to assess the effect of the temperature and the amount of catalyst on glycerol steam reforming to produce hydrogen at a semi-industrial level, regarding some aspects like gas production, hydrogen mole ratio and power, using a Ni-based catalyst. In conclusion, the best results found in this experiment, allowing a plant to work continuously for 9 h, were obtained with the following conditions: S/C ratio: 0.7; inlet flow: 40 mL/min; temperature: 850 °C; La2O3 and NiO percentage: 5 and 12%, respectively.

Glucose oxidase (GOX) and catalase (CAT) were co-immobilized in silica–calcium–alginate hydrogels to degrade must glucose. The effect of the enzyme dose (1.2–2.4 U/mL), the initial must pH (3.6–4.0), and the incubation temperature (10–20 °C) on the glucose consumption, gluconic acid concentration, pH, and color intensity of Verdejo must was studied by using a Box–Behnken experimental design and comparing free and co-immobilized enzymes. A reduction of up to 37.3 g/L of glucose was observed in co-immobilized enzyme-treated must, corresponding to a decrease in its potential alcohol strength of 2.0% vol. (v/v), while achieving a slight decrease in its pH (between 0.28 and 0.60). This slight acidification was due to a significant reduction in the estimated gluconic acid found in the must (up to 73.7%), likely due to its accumulation inside the capsules. Regarding the operational stability of immobilized enzymes, a gradual reduction in glucose consumption was observed over eight consecutive cycles. Finally, co-immobilized enzymes showed enhanced efficiency over a reaction period of 48 h, with an 87.1% higher ratio of glucose consumed per enzyme dose in the second 24 h period compared with free enzymes. These findings provide valuable insights into the performance of GOX–CAT co-immobilized to produce reduced-alcohol wines, mitigating excessive must acidification.

Salt-affected soils have detrimental effects on agriculture and ecosystems. However, these soils can still be used for halophyte (salt-tolerant plants) cultivation using brackish and/or saline water. In this study, we employed soil technologies and mutualistic microorganisms as a sustainable strategy to improve the growth and reproduction of the halophyte Limonium algarvense Erben’s growth and reproduction under saline conditions. A microcosm assay was conducted under controlled greenhouse conditions to cultivate L. algarvense using a saline Fluvisol (FLU) amended—or not—with a Technosol (TEC). Plants were inoculated with the arbuscular mycorrhizal fungus (AMF) Rhizoglomus irregulare and/or a consortium of plant growth-promoting bacteria (PGPB), and they were irrigated with estuarine water. Soil enzyme analysis and physicochemical characterisation of the soils, collected at the beginning and at the end of the assay, were carried out. The physiological status of non-inoculated and inoculated plants was monitored during the assay for 4 months, and AMF root colonisation was evaluated. In FLU, only plants inoculated with the AMF survived. These plants had lower number of leaves, and shoot and root dry biomass than the ones grown in the TEC by the end of the assay. In the TEC, PGPB inoculation led to higher NDVI and PRI values, and AMF inoculation promoted higher reproductive development but not pollen fertility. The findings show that the combined use of soil and microbial technologies can be successfully applied to cultivate L. algarvense, suggesting their generalized use for other Limonium species with economic interest, while contributing to the sustainable use of marginal lands.

Antibiotic resistance is a global problem and bacterial biofilms contribute to its development. In this context, this study aimed to perform the synthesis and characterization of seven materials based on silica mesoporous nanoparticles functionalized with three types of fluoroquinolones, along with Cu2+ or Ag+ species to evaluate the antibacterial properties against Staphylococcus aureus, Enterococcus faecalis, Escherichia coli, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, including clinical and multi-drug-resistant strains of S. aureus and P. aeruginosa. In addition, in order to obtain an effective material to promote wound healing, a well-known proliferative agent, phenytoin sodium, was adsorbed onto one of the silver-functionalized materials. Furthermore, biofilm studies and the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) were also carried out to determine the antibacterial potential of the synthesized materials. In this sense, the Cu2+ materials showed antibacterial activity against S. aureus and E. coli, potentially due to increased ROS generation (up to 3 times), whereas the Ag+ materials exhibited a broader spectrum of activity, even inhibiting clinical strains of MRSA and P. aeruginosa. In particular, the Ag+ material with phenytoin sodium showed the ability to reduce biofilm development by up to 55% and inhibit bacterial growth in a “wound-like medium” by up to 89.33%.

Adolescence is a period during which body composition changes deeply. Selenium (Se) is an excellent antioxidant trace element related to cell growth and endocrine function. In adolescent rats, low Se supplementation affects adipocyte development differently depending on its form of administration (selenite or Se nanoparticles (SeNPs). Despite this effect being related to oxidative, insulin-signaling and autophagy processes, the whole mechanism is not elucidated. The microbiota–liver–bile salts secretion axis is related to lipid homeostasis and adipose tissue development. Therefore, the colonic microbiota and total bile salts homeostasis were explored in four experimental groups of male adolescent rats: control, low-sodium selenite supplementation, low SeNP supplementation and moderate SeNPs supplementation. SeNPs were obtained by reducing Se tetrachloride in the presence of ascorbic acid. Supplementation was received orally through water intake; low-Se rats received twice more Se than control animals and moderate-Se rats tenfold more. Supplementation with low doses of Se clearly affected anaerobic colonic microbiota profile and bile salts homeostasis. However, these effects were different depending on the Se administration form. Selenite supplementation primarily affected liver by decreasing farnesoid X receptor hepatic function, leading to the accumulation of hepatic bile salts together to increase in the ratio Firmicutes/Bacteroidetes and glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) secretion. In contrast, low SeNP levels mainly affected microbiota, moving them towards a more prominent Gram-negative profile in which the relative abundance of Akkermansia and Muribaculaceae was clearly enhanced and the Firmicutes/Bacteroidetes ratio decreased. This bacterial profile is directly related to lower adipose tissue mass. Moreover, low SeNP administration did not modify bile salts pool in serum circulation. In addition, specific gut microbiota was regulated upon administration of low levels of Se in the forms of selenite or SeNPs, which are properly discussed. On its side, moderate-SeNPs administration led to great dysbiosis and enhanced the abundance of pathogenic bacteria, being considered toxic. These results strongly correlate with the deep change in adipose mass previously found in these animals, indicating that the microbiota–liver–bile salts axis is also mechanistically involved in these changes.

The COVID-19 pandemic has underscored the importance of swift responses and the necessity of dependable technologies for vaccine development. Our team previously developed a fast cloning system for the modified vaccinia virus Ankara (MVA) vaccine platform. In this study, we reported on the construction and preclinical testing of a recombinant MVA vaccine obtained using this system. We obtained recombinant MVA expressing the unmodified full-length SARS-CoV-2 spike (S) protein containing the D614G amino-acid substitution (MVA-Sdg) and a version expressing a modified S protein containing amino-acid substitutions designed to stabilize the protein a in a pre-fusion conformation (MVA-Spf). S protein expressed by MVA-Sdg was found to be expressed and was correctly processed and transported to the cell surface, where it efficiently produced cell–cell fusion. Version Spf, however, was not proteolytically processed, and despite being transported to the plasma membrane, it failed to induce cell–cell fusion. We assessed both vaccine candidates in prime-boost regimens in the susceptible transgenic K18-human angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (K18-hACE2) in mice and in golden Syrian hamsters. Robust immunity and protection from disease was induced with either vaccine in both animal models. Remarkably, the MVA-Spf vaccine candidate produced higher levels of antibodies, a stronger T cell response, and a higher degree of protection from challenge. In addition, the level of SARS-CoV-2 in the brain of MVA-Spf inoculated mice was decreased to undetectable levels. Those results add to our current experience and range of vaccine vectors and technologies for developing a safe and effective COVID-19 vaccine.

A hydrothermal method was successfully employed to synthesize kesterite Cu2ZnSnS4 (CZTS) nanoparticles. X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and optical ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) spectroscopy were used for characterization of structural, chemical, morphological, and optical properties. XRD results confirmed that a nanocrystalline CZTS phase corresponding to the kesterite structure was formed. Raman analysis confirmed the existence of single pure phase CZTS. XPS results revealed the oxidation states as Cu+, Zn2+, Sn4+, and S2−. FESEM and TEM micrograph images revealed the presence of nanoparticles with average sizes between 7 nm to 60 nm. The synthesized CZTS nanoparticles bandgap was found to be 1.5 eV which is optimal for solar photocatalytic degradation applications. The properties as a semiconductor material were evaluated through the Mott–Schottky analysis. The photocatalytic activity of CZTS has been investigated through photodegradation of Congo red azo dye solution under solar simulation light irradiation, proving to be an excellent photo-catalyst for CR where 90.2% degradation could be achieved in just 60 min. Furthermore, the prepared CZTS was reusable and can be repeatedly used to remove Congo red dye from aqueous solutions.

Gesture recognition is widely used to express emotions or to communicate with other people or machines. Hand gesture recognition is a problem of great interest to researchers because it is a high-dimensional pattern recognition problem. The high dimensionality of the problem is directly related to the performance of machine learning models. The dimensionality problem can be addressed through feature selection and feature extraction. In this sense, the evaluation of a model with manual feature extraction and automatic feature extraction was proposed. The manual feature extraction was performed using the statistical functions of central tendency, while the automatic extraction was performed by means of a CNN and BiLSTM. These features were also evaluated in classifiers such as Softmax, ANN, and SVM. The best-performing model was the combination of BiLSTM and ANN (BiLSTM-ANN), with an accuracy of 99.9912%.

Obesity is a global health issue, in which modifications in gut microbiota composition have a key role. Different therapeutic strategies are being developed in combination with diet and exercise, including the use of plant extracts, such as those obtained from Morus alba L. leaves. Recent studies have revealed their anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. The aim of the present work was to evaluate whether the beneficial effects of M. alba L. leaf extract in high-fat diet-induced obesity in mice is correlated with its impact on gut microbiota. The extract reduced body weight gain and attenuated lipid accumulation, as well as increased glucose sensitivity. These effects were associated with an amelioration of the obesity-associated inflammatory status, most probably due to the described antioxidant properties of the extract. Moreover, M. alba L. leaf extract mitigated gut dysbiosis, which was evidenced by the restoration of the Firmicutes/Bacteroidota ratio and the decrease in plasma lipopolysaccharide (LPS) levels. Specifically, the extract administration reduced Alistipes and increased Faecalibaculum abundance, these effects being correlated with the beneficial effects exerted by the extract on the obesity-associated inflammation. In conclusion, anti-obesogenic effects of M. alba L. leaf extract may be mediated through the amelioration of gut dysbiosis.

Higher temperatures due to climate change are causing greater sugar production in grapes and more alcoholic wines. The use of glucose oxidase (GOX) and catalase (CAT) in grape must is a biotechnological green strategy to produce reduced-alcohol wines. GOX and CAT were effectively co-immobilized by sol-gel entrapment in silica-calcium-alginate hydrogel capsules. The optimal co-immobilization conditions were achieved at a concentration of the colloidal silica, sodium silicate and sodium alginate of 7.38%, 0.49% and 1.51%, respectively, at pH 6.57. The formation of a porous silica-calcium-alginate structure was confirmed by environmental scanning electron microscopy and the elemental analysis of the hydrogel by X-ray spectroscopy. The immobilized GOX showed a Michaelis–Menten kinetic, while the immobilized CAT fits better to an allosteric model. Immobilization also conferred superior GOX activity at low pH and temperature. The capsules showed a good operational stability, as they could be reused for at least 8 cycles. A substantial reduction of 26.3 g/L of glucose was achieved with encapsulated enzymes, which corresponds to a decrease in potential alcoholic strength of must of about 1.5% vol. These results show that co-immobilized GOX and CAT in silica-calcium-alginate hydrogels is a promising strategy to produce reduced-alcohol wines.

The temperature-dependent luminescence properties of γ-Ga2O3 nanoparticles prepared by a precipitation method are investigated under steady-state and pulsed-light excitation. The main photoluminescence (PL) emission at room temperature consists of a single blue band centered around 2.76 eV, which hardly undergoes a blueshift of 0.03 eV when temperature goes down to 4 K. The emission behaves with a positive thermal quenching following an Arrhenius-type curve. The data fitting yields two non-radiative levels affecting the emission band with activation energies of 7 meV and 40 meV. On the other hand, time-resolved PL measurements have also been taken and studied as a function of the temperature. The data analysis has resulted in two lifetimes: one of 3.4 ns and the other of 32 ns at room temperature, which undergo an increase up to 4.5 ns and 65 ns at T = 4 K, respectively. Based on both stationary and dynamic PL results, a model of radiative and non-radiative levels associated with the main emission bands of γ-Ga2O3 is suggested. Finally, by using PL excitation measurements, an estimation of the bandgap and its variation with temperature between 4 K and room temperature were obtained and assessed against O’Donnell–Chen’s law. With this variation it has been possible to calculate the average of the phonon energy, resulting in ⟨ħω⟩ = 10 ± 1 meV.

The SARS-CoV-2 infection has increased the number of patients entering Intensive Care Unit (ICU) facilities and antibiotic treatments. Concurrently, the multi-drug resistant bacteria (MDRB) colonization index has risen. Considering that most of these bacteria are derived from gut microbiota, the study of its composition is essential. Additionally, SARS-CoV-2 infection may promote gut dysbiosis, suggesting an effect on microbiota composition. This pilot study aims to determine bacteria biomarkers to predict MDRB colonization risk in SARS-CoV-2 patients in ICUs. Seventeen adult patients with an ICU stay >48 h and who tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 infection were enrolled in this study. Patients were assigned to two groups according to routine MDRB colonization surveillance: non-colonized and colonized. Stool samples were collected when entering ICUs, and microbiota composition was determined through Next Generation Sequencing techniques. Gut microbiota from colonized patients presented significantly lower bacterial diversity compared with non-colonized patients (p < 0.05). Microbiota in colonized subjects showed higher abundance of Anaerococcus, Dialister and Peptoniphilus, while higher levels of Enterococcus, Ochrobactrum and Staphylococcus were found in non-colonized ones. Moreover, LEfSe analysis suggests an initial detection of Dialister propionicifaciens as a biomarker of MDRB colonization risk. This pilot study shows that gut microbiota profile can become a predictor biomarker for MDRB colonization in SARS-CoV-2 patients.

Ageing on lees can be a good technique to enhance the quality of red sparkling base wines. Ultrasound treatment of the lees, prior to addition to the wine, can improve the releasing of their components into the wine. This study carries out a four month ageing on lees of a red sparkling base wine by the addition of lees sonicated at different amplitude levels: 30%, 60% and 90% for 10 min. The ageing on ultrasound-treated lees improved the quality of the red base wine, with a greater impact the higher the amplitude of the applied ultrasound. Sonicated lees at an amplitude of 90% enlarged the concentration of neutral polysaccharides in the wine and reduced its astringency, which was evaluated chemically. Furthermore, this treatment enhanced the concentration of some volatile compounds in the wine, mainly acetates, esters and terpenes with floral and fruity aromatic notes. This trend was also found for some fused alcohols, contributing to the aromatic complexity of wines, as well as for 2-phenylethanol, an alcohol with a rose-like aroma, and also for C6-alcohols with a green-herbaceous aroma. The results indicate that ultrasonication is a promising tool to increase the benefits of ageing on lees on the quality of red sparkling base wines.

An accurate knowledge of the optical properties of β-Ga2O3 is key to developing the full potential of this oxide for photonics applications. In particular, the dependence of these properties on temperature is still being studied. Optical micro- and nanocavities are promising for a wide range of applications. They can be created within microwires and nanowires via distributed Bragg reflectors (DBR), i.e., periodic patterns of the refractive index in dielectric materials, acting as tunable mirrors. In this work, the effect of temperature on the anisotropic refractive index of β-Ga2O3 n(λ,T) was analyzed with ellipsometry in a bulk crystal, and temperature-dependent dispersion relations were obtained, with them being fitted to Sellmeier formalism in the visible range. Micro-photoluminescence (μ-PL) spectroscopy of microcavities that developed within Cr-doped β-Ga2O3 nanowires shows the characteristic thermal shift of red–infrared Fabry–Perot optical resonances when excited with different laser powers. The origin of this shift is mainly related to the variation in the temperature of the refractive index. A comparison of these two experimental results was performed by finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulations, considering the exact morphology of the wires and the temperature-dependent, anisotropic refractive index. The shifts caused by temperature variations observed by μ-PL are similar, though slightly larger than those obtained with FDTD when implementing the n(λ,T) obtained with ellipsometry. The thermo-optic coefficient was calculated.

Obesity is a worldwide public health problem whose prevalence rate has increased steadily over the last few years. Therefore, it is urgent to improve the management of obesity and its comorbidities, and plant-based treatments are receiving increasing attention worldwide. In this regard, the present study aimed to investigate a well-characterized extract of Lavandula multifida (LME) in an experimental model of obesity in mice and explore the underlying mechanisms. Interestingly, the daily administration of LME reduced weight gain as well as improved insulin sensitivity and glucose tolerance. Additionally, LME ameliorated the inflammatory state in both liver and adipose tissue by decreasing the expression of various proinflammatory mediators (Il-6, Tnf-α, Il-1β, Jnk-1, Pparα, Pparγ, and Ampk) and prevented increased gut permeability by regulating the expression of mucins (Muc-1, Muc-2, and Muc-3) and proteins implicated in epithelial barrier integrity maintenance (Ocln, Tjp1, and Tff-3). In addition, LME showed the ability to reduce oxidative stress by inhibiting nitrite production on macrophages and lipid peroxidation. These results suggest that LME may represent a promising complementary approach for the management of obesity and its comorbidities.

The revolution of Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems (RPASs), both in the commercial and the research field, has accelerated the arrival of innovative and complex services to the civilian environment within non-segregated airspace. The extensive deployment of these services will still require solving relevant challenges in several topics, such as regulation, security, or diverse technical defiance. In particular, the services to be provided increasingly demand network resources and performance improvements. This scenario will be strongly exacerbated by the upcoming resources provided by the 5G/6G architectures, where Remotely Piloted Aircrafts (RPAs) will likely support multiple communication interfaces and will be able to establish multi-hop network connectivity with numerous devices leading to an unprecedented hyper-connected RPA environment. In addition, future RPASs will have to enhance the management of their connectivity capabilities to comply with the latest regulations, which demand an uninterrupted link for the Control and Non-Payload Communications (CNPC). This article presents a flexible Communication Infrastructure Manager (CIM) based on Software-Defined Networking (SDN) and virtualization technologies capable of handling the complexity inherent to this ecosystem and being adapted to different operation requirements to cope with all these communication challenges. Finally, the article shows several validation experiences to demonstrate the potential of the CIM versus the standard approach.

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are non-coding small RNAs that play crucial roles in plant development and stress responses and can regulate plant interactions with beneficial soil microorganisms such as arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF). To determine if root inoculation with distinct AMF species affected miRNA expression in grapevines subjected to high temperatures, RNA-seq was conducted in leaves of grapevines inoculated with either Rhizoglomus irregulare or Funneliformis mosseae and exposed to a high-temperature treatment (HTT) of 40 °C for 4 h per day for one week. Our results showed that mycorrhizal inoculation resulted in a better plant physiological response to HTT. Amongst the 195 identified miRNAs, 83 were considered isomiRs, suggesting that isomiRs can be biologically functional in plants. The number of differentially expressed miRNAs between temperatures was higher in mycorrhizal (28) than in non-inoculated plants (17). Several miR396 family members, which target homeobox-leucine zipper proteins, were only upregulated by HTT in mycorrhizal plants. Predicted targets of HTT-induced miRNAs in mycorrhizal plants queried to STRING DB formed networks for Cox complex, and growth and stress-related transcription factors such as SQUAMOSA promoter-binding-like-proteins, homeobox-leucine zipper proteins and auxin receptors. A further cluster related to DNA polymerase was found in R. irregulare inoculated plants. The results presented herein provide new insights into miRNA regulation in mycorrhizal grapevines under heat stress and can be the basis for functional studies of plant-AMF-stress interactions.
