Determining pre-harvest fruit maturity is vital to ensure the quality of kiwifruit, and dry-matter content is an important indicator of kiwifruit ripeness. To predict the pre-harvest dry-matter content of kiwifruit continuously in real-time with high accuracy, this study uses hyperspectral data of pre-harvest Jintao kiwifruit obtained by using a hyperspectral image acquisition device. The raw data underwent whiteboard correction, spectral data extraction, spectral pre-processing, and feature-band extraction, following which the dry-matter content of the fruit was predicted by using partial least squares (PLS) regression. The feature bands extracted by the random frog method were 538.93, 671.14, 693.41, 770.61, 796.98, 813.24, 841.21, 843.29, and 856.80 nm, which improve the accuracy of the PLS method for predicting dry-matter content, with R2 = 0.92 and a root mean square error (RMSE) of 0.41% for the training set, and R2 = 0.85 and a RMSE of 0.50% for the test set. These results show that the proposed method reduces the number of required bands while maintaining the prediction accuracy, thereby demonstrating the reliability of using hyperspectral data to predict the pre-harvest dry-matter content of kiwifruit. This method can effectively guide the management of kiwifruit harvesting period, establishing a theoretical foundation for precise unmanned harvesting.

This paper presents an efficient numerical manifold method for solving the Burgers’ equation. To improve accuracy and streamline the solution process, we apply a nonlinear function transformation technique that reformulates the original problem into a linear diffusion equation. We utilize a dual cover mesh along with an explicit multi-step time integration method for spatial and temporal discretization, respectively. Constant cover functions are employed across mathematical covers, interconnected by a linear weight function for each manifold element. The full discretization formulation is derived using the Galerkin weak form. To efficiently compute the inverse of the symmetric positive definite mass matrix, we employ the Crout algorithm. The performance and convergence of our method are rigorously evaluated through several benchmark numerical tests. Extensive comparisons with exact solutions and alternative methods demonstrate that our approach delivers an accurate, stable, and efficient computational scheme for the Burgers’ equation.

Dengue virus (DENV) infection causes various disease manifestations ranging from an asymptomatic state to severe, life-threatening dengue. Despite intensive research, the molecular mechanisms underlying the abnormal host responses and severe disease symptoms caused by evolved DENV strains is not fully understood. First, the spatial structure of mutant DENV was compared via in silico molecular modeling analysis. Second, employing single-nucleus and spatial RNA sequencing, we analyzed and verified transcriptome samples in uninfected, mild (NGC group), and severe (N10 group) liver tissues from murine models. In this study, we obtained a cumulatively mutated DENV-2 N10 with enhanced capability of replication and pathogenicity post 10 serial passages in Ifnra−/− mice. This variant caused severe damage in the liver, as compared with other organs. Furthermore, mutated DENV infection elicited stronger responses in hepatocytes. The critical host factor Nrg4 was identified. It dominated mainly via the activation of the NRG/ErbB pathway in mice with severe symptoms. We report on evolved N10 viruses with changes observed in different organisms and tissue. This evolutionary variant results in high replicability, severe pathogenicity, and strong responses in murine. Moreover, the host responses may play a role by activating the NRG/ErbB signaling pathway. Our findings provide a realistic framework for defining disturbed host responses at the animal model level that might be one of the main causes of severe dengue and the potential application value.

As the green bond market in China develops and its institutional structure improves, the green bond has emerged as a pivotal element within the broader framework of the green financial system. We focus on bond issuers in China’s A-shares from the years 2010 to 2021 and explore green bond issuance and the spillover effect of green technology innovation under the market attention perspective. Findings are that: (1) Green bond issuance can produce the spillover effect in the industry and significantly enhance peer enterprises’ green technology innovation. (2) From the viewpoint of market attention, analyst attention can significantly enhance the spillover effect of green bond issuance within the industry. The same is true for media attention and investor attention. (3) Further research shows that within the same industry, the spillover effect is more pronounced for state-owned enterprises, large-scale enterprises, and enterprises in regions with higher levels of green financial development. For the booming development of China’s green bond market and the sustainable development of enterprises, this paper provides theoretical and practical foundations.

Soil is the basis of bamboo growth and quality formation of bamboo shoots and has an important contribution to the sustainable development of agriculture. To this end, We studied the soil properties and microbial communities of Dendrocalamus brandisii by collecting twenty-one soil samples from its seven typical geographic provenances in Yunnan Province, China. Bacterial 16S rRNA gene amplicons were used to detect soil bacteria and predict bacterial functions using Tax4Fun. The results indicated that the soil bacterial diversity indices (ACE, Chao1, Simpson, and Shannon) were significantly different among different geographical provenances. The dominant bacterial groups at the phylum level in all seven regions were Proteobacteria (19.78~29.06%), Actinobacteria (13.53~30.01%), Chloroflexi (8.03~31.47%), and Acidobacteria (7.12~19.17%), with markedly different constitution proportions. Total phosphorus, available potassium, and pH were the main environmental factors affecting soil bacterial communities. There were significant differences in the secondary metabolic pathways and phenotypes of soil bacterial functions, exhibiting a diversity of functions. The geographical variables of the soil bacterial community in D. brandisii varied with spatial scales. Environmental factors such as available potassium (AK), pH, and total nitrogen (TN) have an impact on soil bacterial communities.

This study presents a novel obstacle evasion method for unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) clusters in the presence of static and dynamic obstacles. First, a discrete three-dimensional model of the UAV is provided. Second, the proposed improved artificial potential field (APF) is illustrated. In designing the improved scheme, a pseudo-exponential function is fused into the potential field, thus avoiding local extreme points. Frictional resistance is introduced to optimize vibration and maintain stability after reaching the desired endpoints. Meanwhile, the relevant parameters are optimized, and appropriate state limits are defined, thus enhancing the control stability. Third, Lyapunov stability analysis proves that all signals in the closed-loop cluster system are ultimately bounded. Finally, the simulation results demonstrate that the UAV cluster can efficiently reconstruct, form, and maintain formations while avoiding static and dynamical obstacles along with maintaining a safe distance, solving the problem of the local extreme of traditional artificial potential field methods. The proposed scheme is also tested under large-scale multi-UAV scenarios. In conclusion, this study provides valuable insights for engineers working with UAV clusters navigating through formations.

The link between the escalation of global warming and the increase in extreme precipitation events necessitates a deeper understanding of future trends. This study focused on the dynamics of extreme rainfall in Hubei Province throughout the 21st century, a region already sensitive to climatic shifts and extreme weather occurrences. Using the high-resolution global climate model RegCM4 driven by another high-resolution model, HadGEM2-ES, and based on the representative concentration pathway (RCP8.5) emissions scenario, this research predicted the changes in rainfall patterns in Hubei Province during the summer of the 21st century. The accuracy of the adjusted model was confirmed through the use of five extreme rainfall indices (EPIs), namely maximum 5-day amount of precipitation (RX5day), number of heavy rain days (R10), the simple daily intensity index (SDII), consecutive dry days (CDD), and consecutive wet days (CWD), that measured the intensity and frequency of such events. In particular, excluding the index for continuous dry days (CDD), there was an anticipated increase in extreme rainfall during the summer in the mid-21st century. The number of heavy rain days (R10mm) increased significantly (p < 0.05) in the southeastern parts, especially for Wuhan, Xiantao, Qianjiang, Jinzhou, and Ezhou. The EPI values were higher in southeastern Hubei. Consequently, areas such as Wuhan, Xiantao, and Qianjiang in Hubei Province are projected to face more frequent and severe extreme rainfall episodes as the century progresses.

To reduce the resistance of high-speed displacement ships with Froude numbers (Fr) between 0.4 and 0.5, this paper proposes the installation of hydrofoils at the bow and stern of the ship. Firstly, starting from the bow wave, this paper proposes the installation of a flat plate appendage at the free surface of the ship’s bow to suppress the height of the bow wave and thus reduce the hull resistance. Taking the DTMB 5415 ship model as the research object, CFD calculation results show that installing a flat plate appendage at the free surface of the ship’s bow can effectively suppress the height of the bow wave, and the total resistance reduction ratio can reach 6.49% when Fr = 0.45. Then, the flat plate appendage was improved to a hydrofoil appendage, further reducing the hull resistance. As a result, the total resistance reduction rate can reach 9.15% at Fr = 0.45. Following this, hydrofoil appendages were installed simultaneously at the bow and stern. The drag reduction effect and mechanism were studied, and the results show that the hydrofoils at the bow and stern have a good drag reduction effect. Suppressing the bow and stern waves and improving the flow field are the main reasons for the drag reduction. Finally, the drag reduction effect of the hydrofoil appendages was verified through experiments, demonstrating its excellent drag reduction effect when Fr = 0.4–0.5 and a maximum total resistance reduction ratio of 14.552%.

In this study, an improved discontinuous deformation analysis method with sub-block strategy is introduced to numerically simulate mixed-mode fractures. This approach partitions the material domain into continuum and potential discontinuum regions, applying specialized modeling techniques to each. In the continuum region, penalty-like bonding springs are employed to glue the sub-blocks together to capture the elastic behavior of the material. In the potential discontinuum region, the cohesive springs with the stiffness based on the cohesive zone model are implemented between sub-blocks to reproduce the process of crack nucleation and propagation. The primary advantage of this method is its capability to effectively model the transition of quasi-brittle solids from a continuous to a discontinuous stage through the degradation of cohesive springs. This accurately represents material failure while maintaining stability and consistency along uncracked interfaces. Another significant benefit is the method’s efficiency, as it avoids complex contact operations along sub-block interfaces before the cohesive spring between them fails. Validation through various benchmark numerical examples, such as cantilever beam-bending and diverse fracture simulations, demonstrates the method’s accuracy and robustness by comparing the results with analytical solutions. These comparisons show that the proposed method effectively captures the interplay between tensile and shear traction components in the mixed-mode crack propagation process.

Independent lightning rods are often installed in substation grounding systems for lightning protection. The concentrated discharge channel formed when a lightning current flows to the ground through a grounding electrode will cause electromagnetic interference to the directly buried secondary cable. And the three-dimensional structure of the discharge channel will affect the transient electromagnetic field distribution, thereby affecting the electromagnetic transients on cable shields. In order to explore the influence of soil discharge phenomena on the electromagnetic interference of the directly buried secondary cable, in this paper, we carried out experiments on cables in two different grounding modes, single-ended and double-ended grounding, and captured image of soil discharge channels. The results show that the cable grounding mode will affect the coupling mode that causes the shielding layer current. The relative spatial position of the soil discharge channel and the cable has a significant impact on the magnitude of the shielding layer current under both grounding modes. The water content and salt content of the soil also have different degrees of influence on the coupling current of the shielding layer in different grounding modes.

Configurators have recently emerged as essential tools in the construction industry to enable builders to offer a wide range of customizable designs. Due to significant challenges in information integration between construction suppliers and clients, existing configurator systems often lack crucial usability and supply chain information, presenting barriers to wider adoption among residential communities, especially in single-family residence development that requires a high degree of customization. To address this challenge in the design and construction supply chain, this study presents a lightweight cloud-based modular home configuration methodology as a robust unified platform solution to integrate parametric design options with a certified kit-of-parts library to meet local design codes. The configurator prototype developed under this framework seamlessly integrates essential design and supply chain information by leveraging (1) a generative layout design with pre-approved blueprints, (2) a knowledge-based recommender system to link the design process with certified material catalogs, and (3) a user-friendly web interface to present possible designs. The implementation of a single-family housing design adhering to the building codes in the British Columbia Province of Canada illustrates the benefits of the proposed configurator functionalities and efficient supplier data integration. Lightweight and automated, the proposed configurator has substantial potential to be scaled and adopted across different communities.

Considering the voltage stability problem brought by large-scale distributed PV access to the distribution network, this paper proposes a generalized load model that considers the fault ride-through capability of distributed PV. Firstly, the detailed model of the distribution network is established, and the detailed model is calibrated based on the measured data, the simulation errors are below 1%. And then establish a generalized load model considering distributed PV high and low voltage traversal ability. The sensitivity analysis results are used to rank the parameters to be identified, and the parameters with higher sensitivity are identified. The parameters are obtained from the detailed model and measured data, and four sets of parameters are identified and simulated under different PV penetration rates and fault conditions. The calculated fitting errors are less than 1%. The results show that the generalized load gray box model of the distribution network with distributed PV high and low voltage ride-through capability can reflect the dynamic characteristics of the distribution network well.

Titanium dioxide (TiO2) photocatalysts, characterized by exceptional photocatalytic activity, high photoelectric conversion efficiency, and economic viability, have found widespread application in recent years for azo dye degradation. However, inherent constraints, such as the material’s limited visible light absorption stemming from its bandgap and the swift recombination of charge carriers, have impeded its broader application potential. Encouragingly, these barriers can be mitigated through the modification of TiO2. In this review, the common synthesis methods of TiO2 are reviewed, and the research progress of TiO2 modification technology at home and abroad is discussed in detail, including precious metal deposition, transition metal doping, rare earth metal doping, composite semiconductors, and composite polymers. These modification techniques effectively enhance the absorption capacity of TiO2 in the visible region and reduce the recombination rate of carriers and electrons, thus significantly improving its photocatalytic performance. Finally, this paper looks forward to the future development direction of TiO2 photocatalytic materials, including the exploration of new modified materials, in-depth mechanism research, and performance optimization in practical applications, to provide useful references for further research and application of TiO2 photocatalytic materials.

Cytokinesis, the last step in cell division, separates daughter cells through mechanical force. This is often through the force produced by an actomyosin contractile ring. In fission yeast cells, the ring helps recruit a mechanosensitive ion channel, Pkd2, to the cleavage furrow, whose activation by membrane tension promotes calcium influx and daughter cell separation. However, it is unclear how the activities of Pkd2 may affect the actomyosin ring. Here, through both microscopic and genetic analyses of a hypomorphic pkd2 mutant, we examined the potential role of this essential gene in assembling the contractile ring. The pkd2-81KD mutation significantly increased the counts of the type II myosin heavy chain Myo2 (+18%), its regulatory light chain Rlc1 (+37%) and actin (+100%) molecules in the ring, compared to the wild type. Consistent with a regulatory role of Pkd2 in the ring assembly, we identified a strong negative genetic interaction between pkd2-81KD and the temperature-sensitive mutant myo2-E1. The pkd2-81KD myo2-E1 cells often failed to assemble a complete contractile ring. We conclude that Pkd2 modulates the recruitment of type II myosin and actin to the contractile ring, suggesting a novel calcium-dependent mechanism regulating the actin cytoskeletal structures during cytokinesis.

This paper provides the process of incremental constitutive integration for the unified hardening model combined with the transformation stress method. The dimension-extending technique takes the hardening function of the hardening/softening model as the same position as the stress components, so that the constitutive integration of the plasticity can be reduced to an initial value problem of differential–complementarity equations, which is solved using the Gauss–Seidel algorithm-based Projection–Correction for the mixed complementarity problem. The Gauss–Seidel based Projection–Correction algorithm does not require the calculation of the Jacobean matrix of the potential function, making it relatively easy to implement in programming. The unified hardening model is proposed based on the modified Cam–Clay model and the sub-loading surface model, and the elastic properties are pressure-dependent. Two processing methods, backward Euler integration and exact elastic property, are used for the variable elasticity properties. The constitutive integration of the increased dimensional unified hardening model is reduced to a special mixed complementarity problem and solved by the proposed algorithm, which does not need to calculate the Jacobean matrix of the potential function, and greatly simplifies the derivation process. Several numerical examples are given to verify the feasibility of the incremental constitutive integration in the unified hardening model, including the single integral point and the boundary value problems. The research results have expanded the scope of use of the Gauss–Seidel based Projection–Correction algorithm.

Chemical warfare agents primarily comprise organophosphorus nerve agents, saliva alkaloids, cyanides, and mustard gas. Exposure to these agents can result in severe respiratory effects, including spasms, edema, and increased secretions leading to breathing difficulties and suffocation. Protecting public safety and national security from such threats has become an urgent priority. Porous metal–organic framework (MOF) materials have emerged as promising candidates for the degradation of chemical warfare agents due to their large surface area, tunable pore size distribution, and excellent catalytic performance. Furthermore, combining MOFs with polymers can enhance their elasticity and processability and improve their degradation performance. In this review, we summarize the literature of the past five years on MOF-based composite materials and their effectiveness in degrading chemical warfare agents. Moreover, we discuss key factors influencing their degradation efficiency, such as MOF structure, pore size, and functionalization strategies. Furthermore, we highlight recent developments in the design of MOF–polymer composites, which offer enhanced degradation performance and stability for practical applications in CWA degradation. These composite materials exhibit good performance in degrading chemical warfare agents, playing a crucial role in protecting public safety and maintaining national security. We can expect to see more breakthroughs in the application of metal–organic framework porous materials for degrading chemical warfare agents. It is hoped that these innovative materials will play a positive role in achieving social stability and security.

Surface soil moisture (SSM) plays an important role in agricultural and environmental systems. With the continuous improvement in the availability of remote sensing data, satellite technology has experienced widespread development in the monitoring of large-scale SSM. Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) and optical remote sensing data have been extensively utilized due to their complementary advantages in this field. However, the limited information from single-band SARs or single optical remote sensing data has restricted the accuracy of SSM retrieval, posing challenges for precise SSM monitoring. In contrast, multi-source and multi-band remote sensing data contain richer and more comprehensive surface information. Therefore, a method of combining multi-band SAR data and employing machine learning models for SSM inversion was proposed. C-band Sentinel-1 SAR data, X-band TerraSAR data, and Sentinel-2 optical data were used in this study. Six commonly used feature parameters were extracted from these data. Three machine learning methods suitable for small-sample training, including Genetic Algorithms Back Propagation (GA-BP), support vector regression (SVR), and Random Forest (RF), were employed to construct the SSM inversion models. The differences in SSM retrieval accuracy were compared when two different bands of SAR data were combined with optical data separately and when three types of data were used together. The results show that the best inversion performance was achieved when all three types of remote sensing data were used simultaneously. Additionally, compared to the C-band SAR data, the X-band SAR data exhibited superior performance. Ultimately, the RF model achieved the best accuracy, with a determinable coefficient of 0.9186, a root mean square error of 0.0153 cm3/cm3, and a mean absolute error of 0.0122 cm3/cm3. The results indicate that utilizing multi-band remote sensing data for SSM inversion offers significant advantages, providing a new perspective for the precise monitoring of SSM.

The effects of inoculating lactic acid bacteria (LAB), specifically Lactiplantibacillus plantarum, Latilactobacillus sakei, Latilactobacillus curvatus, and Weissella hellenica on the flavor, texture, and color formation of dry sausages in which NaCl was partially substituted by 40% KCl, were explored in this study. It was found that LAB inoculation increased the presence of ketones, alcohols, acids, esters, and terpenes. It also reduced the pH, moisture, protein, and fat content, improving the b*-value, flavor, and texture of the sausages. Notably, L. sakei inoculation showed the most significant improvement in dry sausages with NaCl substitutes, especially on the reduction of bitterness. Meanwhile, there was a close positive correlation between the LAB count with the alcohols and esters formation of dry sausage with NaCl substitution (p < 0.05). These findings offer insight into improving the product characteristics of dry sausages using NaCl substitutes.

This paper presents a nonstandard numerical manifold method (NMM) for solving Burgers’ equation. Employing the characteristic Galerkin method, we initially apply the Crank–Nicolson method for temporal discretization along the characteristic. Subsequently, utilizing the Taylor expansion, we transform the semi-implicit formula into a fully explicit form. For spacial discretization, we construct the NMM dual-cover system tailored to Burgers’ equation. We choose constant cover functions and first-order weight functions to enhance computational efficiency and exactly import boundary constraints. Finally, the integrated computing scheme is derived by using the standard Galerkin method, along with a Thomas algorithm-based solution procedure. The proposed method is verified through six benchmark numerical examples under various initial boundary conditions. Extensive comparisons with analytical solutions and results from alternative methods are conducted, demonstrating the accuracy and stability of our approach, particularly in solving Burgers’ equation at high Reynolds numbers.

Understanding exit choice behaviour is essential for optimising safety management strategies in building evacuations. Previous research focused on contextual attributes, such as spatial information, influencing exit choice, often using utility models based on monotonic functions of attributes. However, during emergencies, evacuees typically make rapid, less calculated decisions. The choice of context can significantly impact the evaluation of attributes, leading to preference reversals within the same choice set but under varying context conditions. This cognitive psychological phenomenon, known as context effects, encompasses the compromise effect, the similarity effect, and the attraction effect. While researchers have long recognised the pivotal role of context effects in human decision making, their incorporation into computer-aided evacuation management remains limited. To address this gap, we introduce context effects (CE) in a social force (SF) model, CE-SF. Evaluating CE-SF’s performance against the UF-SF model, which considers only the utility function (UF), we find that CE-SF better replicates exit choice behaviour across urgency levels, highlighting its potential to enhance evacuation strategies. Notably, our study identifies three distinct context effects during evacuations, emphasising their importance in advancing safety measures.

The escalating demand for enhanced therapeutic efficacy and reduced adverse effects in the pharmaceutical domain has catalyzed a new frontier of innovation and research in the field of pharmacy: novel drug delivery systems. These systems are designed to address the limitations of conventional drug administration, such as abbreviated half-life, inadequate targeting, low solubility, and bioavailability. As the disciplines of pharmacy, materials science, and biomedicine continue to advance and converge, the development of efficient and safe drug delivery systems, including biopharmaceutical formulations, has garnered significant attention both domestically and internationally. This article presents an overview of the latest advancements in drug delivery systems, categorized into four primary areas: carrier-based and coupling-based targeted drug delivery systems, intelligent drug delivery systems, and drug delivery devices, based on their main objectives and methodologies. Additionally, it critically analyzes the technological bottlenecks, current research challenges, and future trends in the application of novel drug delivery systems.

Cashmere goats are valuable genetic resources which are famous worldwide for their high-quality fiber. Runs of homozygosity (ROHs) have been identified as an efficient tool to assess inbreeding level and identify related genes under selection. However, there is limited research on ROHs in cashmere goats. Therefore, we investigated the ROH pattern, assessed genomic inbreeding levels and examined the candidate genes associated with the cashmere trait using whole-genome resequencing data from 123 goats. Herein, the Inner Mongolia cashmere goat presented the lowest inbreeding coefficient of 0.0263. In total, we identified 57,224 ROHs. Seventy-four ROH islands containing 50 genes were detected. Certain identified genes were related to meat, fiber and milk production (FGF1, PTPRM, RERE, GRID2, RARA); fertility (BIRC6, ECE2, CDH23, PAK1); disease or cold resistance and adaptability (PDCD1LG2, SVIL, PRDM16, RFX4, SH3BP2); and body size and growth (TMEM63C, SYN3, SDC1, STRBP, SMG6). 135 consensus ROHs were identified, and we found candidate genes (FGF5, DVL3, NRAS, KIT) were associated with fiber length or color. These findings enhance our comprehension of inbreeding levels in cashmere goats and the genetic foundations of traits influenced by selective breeding. This research contributes significantly to the future breeding, reservation and use of cashmere goats and other goat breeds.

Unreasonable cultivation methods and management measures have led to widespread obstacles in tobacco continuous cropping in planting areas, resulting in reduced tobacco yield and soil degradation. Therefore, intercropping tobacco with other crops is an effective strategy to improve continuous cropping barriers. In this study, flue-cured tobacco NC102 and conventional planting varieties of Salvia miltiorrhiza were used as materials, and four treatments of flue-cured tobacco monoculture (CK), flue-cured tobacco, and Salvia miltiorrhiza at a ratio of 1:1 (TS11), 2:2 (TS22), and 2:3 (TS23), respectively, were set up to study their effects on soil microorganisms, physical and chemical properties, and yield and quality of flue-cured tobacco. The results showed that intercropping Salvia miltiorrhiza increased the number of soil bacteria and actinomycetes, decreased the number of fungi, and increased the activity of urease and sucrase. The content of available nitrogen and available phosphorus in intercropping Salvia miltiorrhiza soil was significantly higher than that of the flue-cured tobacco monoculture, while the content of available potassium was lower than that of the flue-cured tobacco monoculture. The soil environment was more conducive to the growth of flue-cured tobacco. Compared with the flue-cured tobacco monoculture, the proportion of superior tobacco in intercropping Salvia miltiorrhiza increased by 2.2–3.4%, and the ratio of potassium to chlorine in leaves of different parts of flue-cured tobacco increased by 12.3–75.0%. The content of total sugar and soluble sugar in middle and upper leaves of intercropping flue-cured tobacco was higher than that of the flue-cured tobacco monoculture, which improved the quality of flue-cured tobacco. From the analysis of the chemical composition of tobacco leaves, TS11 (flue-cured tobacco and Salvia miltiorrhiza intercropping row ratio of 1:1) had the best treatment effect, potassium content, total sugar, reducing sugar content, and potassium chloride ratio of flue-cured tobacco were the highest, the chlorine content was the lowest, and the quality was better than other treatments. From the analysis of total output value, the total output value of TS22 (flue-cured tobacco and Salvia miltiorrhiza intercropping row ratio of 2:2) was higher than that of other intercropping treatments. In 2018 and 2019, the total output value increased by 21.3% and 22.4%, respectively, compared with the flue-cured tobacco monoculture. The intercropping advantage was obvious, and the treatment effect was the best.

The cellular automata (CA) model has been a meaningful way to study pedestrian evacuation during emergencies, such as fires, for many years. Although the time step used in the CA model is one of the most essential elements, there is a lack of research on its impact on evacuation time. In this paper, we set different time step sizes in an extended cellular automaton model and discuss the effect of time step size on the overall evacuation time under different emergency types and levels. For a fixed step time mode, the larger the time step, the longer the evacuation time. In each time step size, the evacuation time gradually increases with the increase of emergency level, and there is a sharp increase when the time for pedestrians to move one step is exactly an integer multiple of the time step. When there is no friction between pedestrians, the evacuation time at each time step first decreases slightly with the increase of emergency level and then remains unchanged; the larger the time step, when the evacuation time remains unchanged, the lower the emergency level and the greater the evacuation time. For the variable time step model, when the friction between pedestrians approaches infinity, the total evacuation time does not change with the emergency level; when the friction between pedestrians is reduced, the total evacuation time slightly decreases with the increase of the emergency level. The less friction there is, the more significant the reduction. The results of previous actual experiments are also reflected in the simulation at a lower emergency level. The result shows that the time step size significantly impacts the evacuation simulation results of the CA model, and researchers should choose carefully to obtain more realistic simulation results.

This paper clarifies the farm applicability and feasibility of spreading biodegradable plastic film mulching for garlic production to ensure the green and sustainable development of the garlic industry. We set up a field trial of garlic planting with biodegradable plastic film mulching (BM) and plastic film mulching (PM), using no film mulching (CK) as the control, and measured CH4 and N2O emissions in the garlic fields. The yield-scaled global warming potential, carbon footprint, and net ecosystem economic benefit (NEEB) were used to assess the comprehensive impact of the different treatments. Compared to the CK, film mulching significantly increased CH4 absorption, with significantly higher seasonal cumulative CH4 emissions (20.5%) in BM than PM, but significantly increased N2O emissions, with significantly lower seasonal cumulative N2O emissions (23.53%) in BM than PM. Both BM and PM improved garlic yield, with PM significantly increasing garlic yield by 18.86% compared to the CK. Moreover, film mulching significantly decreased the yield-scaled global warming potential (by 52.06% and 40.82% in PM and BM, respectively). PM had a significantly higher carbon footprint than BM. Film mulching improved NEEB by 9.29–11.78%. Considering crop yields and environmental benefits, we propose BM as an effective method for a green and efficient garlic production.

A 2.45 GHz high-efficiency rectifying circuit for a wireless radiofrequency (RF) energy collection system is proposed. The RF energy collection system is composed of a transmitting antenna, a receiving antenna, a rectifying circuit and a load. The designed receiving antenna is a kind of dual-polarised cross-dipole antenna; its bandwidth is 2.3–2.5 GHz and gain is 7.97 dBi. The proposed rectifying circuit adopts the technology of an output matching network, which can suppress the high-harmonic components. When the input power at 2.45 GHz is 13 dBm and the load is 2 kΩ, the highest conversion efficiency of RF-DC is 74.8%, and the corresponding maximum DC output voltage is 4.92 V. The experiment results are in good agreement with the simulation results, which shows a good application prospect.

In this study, we explore the impact of the astigmatism phase on the evolution of the phase singularity of an orbital angular momentum (OAM) beam propagating through free space. The results demonstrate that the high-order phase singularity dispersed into a cluster of individual unit phase singularities owing to the astigmatism phase. The number of singularities equaled the topological charge of the OAM beam. By adjusting the astigmatism phase, we could manipulate and control the evolution of the phase singularities, including their displacements and rotation angles. These findings offer significant prospects for customizing 3D vortex lines, optical topologies, and applications involving topological charge measurement, information encoding, and transfer.

Myofibrillar protein–diacylglycerol emulsions containing catechin (MP-DAG-C) possess outstanding emulsifying property and oxidative stability. However, the effect of pH on MP-DAG-C emulsions should be revealed to provide possibilities for their application in practical meat products. Therefore, MP-DAG-C emulsions at different pH values were used in this study, in which lard, unpurified glycerolytic lard (UGL), and purified glycerolytic lard (PGL) were used as the oil phases. The results indicated that the emulsifying property of the UGL- and PGL-based emulsions increased compared to those of the lard-based emulsions (p < 0.05). The emulsifying activity and stability indices, absolute value of ζ-potential, and rheological characteristics increased with the increase in pH values (p < 0.05), with the droplets were smallest and distributed most uniformly at a pH of 6.5 compared to the other acidic environment (p < 0.05). The thiobarbituric acid substance and carbonyl content increased (p < 0.05), while the total sulfydryl content decreased (p < 0.05) during storage. However, there was no statistical difference between the oxidative stability of the MP-DAG-C emulsions with different pH values (p > 0.05). The results implied that the emulsifying property of MP-DAG-C emulsions increased with an increase in pH values. The oxidative stability of the MP-DAG-C emulsions at high pH values was improved by catechin.

Yeast strains are promising starters to compensate for the flavor deficiencies of reduced-salt dry sausages, but their influence on the bacterial community’s structure has not yet been clarified. In this study, the effect of separately inoculating Pichia kudriavzevii MDJ1 (Pk) and Debaryomyces hansenii HRB3 (Dh) on the bacterial community structure in reduced-salt dry sausage was investigated. The results demonstrated that the inoculation of two yeast strains significantly reduced the pH, and enhanced the total acid content, lactic acid bacteria (LAB) counts, and total bacterial counts of reduced-salt sausages after a 12-day fermentation (p < 0.05). Furthermore, high-throughput sequencing results elucidated that the inoculation of yeast strains significantly affected the bacterial composition of the dry sausages. Especially, the relative abundance of bacteria at the firmicute level in the Pk and Dh treatments exhibited a significant increase of 83.22% and 82.19%, respectively, compared to the noninoculated reduced-salt dry sausage treatment (Cr). The relative abundance of Latilactobacillus, especially L. sakei (0.46%, 2.80%, 65.88%, and 33.41% for the traditional dry sausage (Ct), Cr, Pk, and Dh treatments, respectively), increased significantly in the reduced-salt sausages inoculated with two yeast strains. Our work demonstrates the dynamic changes in the bacterial composition of reduced-salt sausages inoculated with different yeast strains, which could provide the foundation for the in-depth study of fungi–bacteria interactions in fermented foods.

Given the growing demand for increased energy capacity and power density in battery systems, ensuring thermal safety in lithium-ion batteries has become a significant challenge for the coming decade. Effective thermal management plays a crucial role in battery design optimization. Air-cooling temperatures in vehicles often vary from ambient due to internal ventilation, with external air potentially overheating due to vehicle malfunctions. This article highlights the efficiency of lateral side air cooling in battery packs, suggesting a need for further exploration beyond traditional front side methods. In this study, we examine the impact of three different temperature levels and two distinct air-cooling directions on the performance of an air-cooling system. Our results reveal that the air-cooling direction has a more pronounced influence compared with the air-cooling temperature. By employing an optimal air-cooling direction and ambient air-cooling temperature, it is possible to achieve a temperature reduction of approximately 5 K in the battery, which otherwise requires a 10 K decrease in the air-cooling temperature to achieve a similar effect. Therefore, we propose an empirical formula for air-cooling efficiency under various conditions, aiming to provide valuable insights into the factors affecting air-cooling systems for industrial applications toward enhancing the fire safety of battery energy storage systems.

The cylindrical vector beam (CVB) has been widely studied and applied in recent years. However, many CVB generation methods suffer from complex systems, and large-size devices are required. Here, we propose a monolayer chiral metasurface composed of spin-sensitive unit cells which can generate different holograms for left- and right-circular polarization based on the combined modulation of geometric phase and detour phase. With a linearly polarized incident beam, the metasurface can generate CVBs with controllable polarization angles and orders, and even more complex vector beams. This work provides a new idea for the design of miniaturized optical devices for generating arbitrary vector beams.

This study aimed to explore the impact paths on soil organic carbon and crop yield of completely or partially substituting chemical N fertilizer with organic fertilizers. A four-year field experiment was conducted and included four treatments: (i) N0, no N fertilization application; (ii) NF, only synthetic N fertilizer application; (iii) 1/2OF, organic fertilizer substituted for 100% of the synthetic N fertilizer, with the total N application amount being equivalent to half that of NF; and (iv) 1/3OF + 2/3NF, organic fertilizer substituted for 1/3 of the synthetic N fertilizer with the total N application amount from organic and synthetic fertilizer being equivalent to that of NF. Soil total organic carbon (TOC), labile organic-carbon fractions (microbial biomass carbon (MBC), dissolved organic carbon (DOC), particulate organic carbon (POC), and easily oxidized organic carbon (EOC)), the carbon pool management index (CPMI), soil aggregated distribution, and water-stable aggregate-associated organic carbon were determined. Structural equation modeling (SEM) was used to clarify the impact paths of TOC and garlic yield changes under different N fertilizer treatments. Results showed that compared with N0 and NF, 1/2OF and 1/3OF + 2/3NF significantly increased TOC contents by 14.1–20.6%. Soil MBC, DOC, and EOC under 1/2OF were significantly higher than under N0, whereas the 1/3OF + 2/3NF treatment had significantly greater POC. The CPMI was improved by organic fertilizer treatment, with 1/2OF treatment being significantly higher than N0 and NF. The proportion of soil aggregate mass with particle sizes >2 mm was significantly greater under N0, while 1/3OF + 2/3NF significantly increased the proportion of particle sizes of 0.5–2 mm. Soil water-stable aggregate-associated organic carbon showed a trend of first increasing and then decreasing, with the largest particle sizes being 1–2 mm. Moreover, organic fertilizer significantly increased soil water-stable aggregate organic carbon compared with N0 and NF. Similarly, the garlic yield increased with organic fertilizer treatment, while 1/3OF + 2/3NF significantly increased the yield by 37.2% and 15.3%, respectively, compared with N0 and NF. Furthermore, SEM analysis indicated that fertilizer regimes could directly affect TOC and labile organic carbon components by affecting aggregate-associated organic carbon. In particular, aggregates with particle sizes of 0.5–2 mm played an important role, indirectly affecting garlic yield and CPMI. These results indicate that organic fertilizer application has the potential to improve soil organic-carbon content and garlic yield; moreover, fully applying organic fertilizer can reduce N fertilizer input while still maintaining an increase in soil organic carbon and crop yield in the short term. However, caution is still needed regarding of the type and quantity of organic fertilizer added in different cropping systems, and with different soil textures.

Dental pulp pericytes are reported to have the capacity to generate odontoblasts and express multiple cytokines and chemokines that regulate the local immune microenvironment, thus participating in the repair of dental pulp injury in vivo. However, it has not yet been reported whether the transplantation of exogenous pericytes can effectively treat pulpitis, and the underlying molecular mechanism remains unknown. In this study, using a lineage-tracing mouse model, we showed that most dental pulp pericytes are derived from cranial neural crest. Then, we demonstrated that the ablation of pericytes could induce a pulpitis-like phenotype in uninfected dental pulp in mice, and we showed that the significant loss of pericytes occurs during pupal inflammation, implying that the transplantation of pericytes may help to restore dental pulp homeostasis during pulpitis. Subsequently, we successfully generated pericytes with immunomodulatory activity from human pluripotent stem cells through the intermediate stage of the cranial neural crest with a high level of efficiency. Most strikingly, for the first time we showed that, compared with the untreated pulpitis group, the transplantation of hPSC-derived pericytes could substantially inhibit vascular permeability (the extravascular deposition of fibrinogen, ** p < 0.01), alleviate pulpal inflammation (TCR+ cell infiltration, * p < 0.05), and promote the regeneration of dentin (** p < 0.01) in the mouse model of pulpitis. In addition, we discovered that the knockdown of latent transforming growth factor beta binding protein 1 (LTBP1) remarkably suppressed the immunoregulation ability of pericytes in vitro and compromised their in vivo regenerative potential in pulpitis. These results indicate that the transplantation of pericytes could efficiently rescue the aberrant phenotype of pulpal inflammation, which may be partially due to LTBP1-mediated T cell suppression.

Swept-source optical coherence tomography (SS-OCT), benefiting from its high sensitivity, relatively large penetration depth, and non-contact and non-invasive imaging capability, is ideal for human skin imaging. However, limited by the size and performance of the reported optical galvanometer scanners, existing portable/handheld OCT probes are still bulky, which makes continuously handheld imaging difficult. Here, we reported a miniaturized electrothermal-MEMS-based SS-OCT microscope that only weighs about 25 g and has a cylinder with a diameter of 15 mm and a length of 40 mm. This MEMS-based handheld imaging probe can achieve a lateral resolution of 25 μm, a 3D imaging time of 5 s, a penetration depth of up to 3.3 mm, and an effective imaging field of view (FOV) of 3 × 3 mm2. We have carried out both calibration plate and biological tissue imaging experiments to test the imaging performance of this microscope. OCT imaging of leaves, dragonfly, and human skin has been successfully obtained, showing the imaging performance and potential applications of this probe on human skin in the future.

In order to foster students’ development and enhance the training quality within tourism programs at universities, this study aims to investigate the relationships among tourism students’ professional identity, academic self-efficacy, learning engagement, and university support. Professional identity refers to learners’ recognition and understanding of their study programs and is viewed as a dynamic, progressive process consisting of professional cognition, professional emotion, and professional appraisal. Data were collected from 333 tourism students studying at Chinese universities. They were analyzed through SPSS and SmartPLS. The results revealed that there is no significant correlation between students’ professional cognition and learning engagement. However, students’ professional emotions and professional appraisals positively influence learning engagement. Moreover, all three dimensions of professional identity exhibit positive effects on students’ academic self-efficacy. Additionally, students’ academic self-efficacy demonstrates a positive impact on learning engagement, and university support is associated with increased learning engagement and academic self-efficacy. This study contributes to a comprehensive understanding of the learning experience of tourism students and aims to facilitate the advancement of tourism education through cultivating students’ professional identity towards tourism and developing students’ career commitment in the tourism industry. Theoretical and practical implications are discussed.

The one-time application of blended urea (BU), combining controlled-release urea (CRU) and uncoated urea, has proven to be a promising nitrogen (N) management strategy. However, the long-term sustainability of blending urea remains largely unexplored. To assess whether a single application of blended urea could effectively replace split uncoated urea applications, a long-term field experiment was conducted in the North China Plain (NCP). The results indicated that, when compared to common urea (CU) at the optimal N rate (180 kg N ha−1), BU achieved comparable grain yields, N uptake and NUE (61% vs. 62). BU exhibited a 12% higher 0–20 cm soil organic nitrogen stock and a 9% higher soil organic carbon (C) stock. Additionally, BU reduced life–cycle reactive N (Nr) losses and the N footprint by 10%, and lowered greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and the C footprint by 7%. From an economic analysis perspective, BU demonstrated comparable private profitability and a 3% greater ecosystem economic benefit. Therefore, BU under the optimal N rate has the potential to substitute split applications of common urea in the long–term and can be regarded as a sustainable N management strategy for wheat and maize production in the NCP.

The lock-in amplifier (LIA) is widely utilized to detect ultra-weak optical periodic signals based on the phase-sensitive and enhanced detecting theory. In this paper, we present an all-digital and universal embedded LIA platform that accurately and conveniently describes the spectrum generated by standard black bodies at various temperatures with different optical detectors. The proposed design significantly reduces the complexity and cost of traditional analog LIAs while maintaining accuracy. The LIA components are implemented using a single field programmable gate array (FPGA), offering flexibility to modify parameters for different situations. The normalized mean-square error (NMSE) of the captured spectra in the experiments is within 0.9% compared the theoretical values.

Cigar tobacco, an economically important cash crop, holds a substantial role within the fiscal framework of the national economy. This crop, however, is characterized by a marked vulnerability to pathogenic bacteria, culminating in consequential financial loss throughout its cultivation phase. Plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR), a salient class of advantageous bacterial flora, are recognized for their ability to enhance plant growth, inhibit deleterious pathogens, and synthesize compounds that either have a direct impact on plant morphogenesis or activate otherwise ineffectual soil components. Through these mechanisms, PGPR augments the soil’s nutritional profile, making it more receptive to plant uptake, thus stimulating vegetative growth. The Bacillus subtilis microbial fertilizer, the prime exemplar of PGPR, demonstrates not only a pathogen-suppressive effect but also an induction of the plant’s innate disease resistance mechanism. This bolsters the plant’s resilience to disease fosters a probiotic milieu within the soil, and catalyzes the formation of agglomerate structures, all of which contribute to enhanced soil fertility and moisture retention, increased soil friability, and the facilitation of root expansion. In this study, a controlled pot experiment was conducted to elucidate the mechanism through which inter-root probiotics rehabilitate the soil’s ecosystem and foster crop growth in cigar tobacco seedlings afflicted with root black rot bacteria. Four treatments were instituted, including CK: a blank control (no microbial application); A: probiotic only (Bacillus subtilis microbial fertilizer); B: both pathogenic and probiotic (the Bacillus subtilis microbial fertilizer together with root black rot pathogen); C: pathogenic only (the root black rot pathogen). Our empirical findings delineate that the presence of pathogenic bacteria deteriorates the soil environment, thereby constraining the transmutation of soil nutrients and their subsequent assimilation by plants. This severely impedes the vegetative development of cigar plants. By contrast, the application of a PGPR microbial fertilizer modified the soil microbial community structure, exhibiting an antagonistic interaction with the indigenous pathogenic bacterial species. Relative to the CK treatment, the application of the Bacillus subtilis microbial fertilizer was found to invigorate the catalytic conversion of soil enzymes, incrementing the peroxidase, acid phosphatase, urease, and sucrase activity by 12.98%, 19.55%, 13.57%, and 17.91%, respectively. Meanwhile, it was observed to ameliorate the soil’s physicochemical attributes, enhancing the available content of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium by 4.52%, 6.52%, and 15.14%, respectively, along with the augmentation of soil organic matter content by 17.33%. The fortification of soil physicochemical properties and the enrichment of soil fertility, as a result of the PGPR microbial fertilizer application, translated into a robust 57.23% enhancement of root vigor and a 60.47% extension of the root length of cigar tobacco seedlings. These soil amendments subsequently fueled an uptick in the growth parameters of cigar plants, including increases in plant height, stem girth, leaf count, maximal leaf dimensions, and both the fresh and dry weight of cigar tobacco.

Kiwifruits are often exposed to various temperature fluctuations (TFs) during postharvest transportation and storage. To evaluate the effect of TFs on the qualities of kiwifruits during storage, kiwifruits were stored at 2 °C, 2 °C or 5 °C (TF2 °C–5 °C, alternating every 12 h), 2 °C or 7 °C (TF2 °C–7 °C, alternating every 12 h) for 3 d before long time storage at 2 °C. Observations revealed that kiwifruits stored at a constant 2 °C showed the lowest loss of weight and vitamin C because of minimized ethylene production and respiratory rate compared with that of TF2 °C–5 °C and TF2 °C–7 °C. Moreover, the results of RT-qPCR verified that the expression levels of genes encoding polygalacturonase, β-galacturonidase, and pectin methylesterase were significantly increased by the treatment of TF. Hence, TF accelerated the degradation of cell walls, softening, translucency, and relative conductivity of the flesh of kiwifruits. In addition, the impact of TF2 °C–7 °C on kiwifruits was more significant relative to TF2 °C–5 °C. The present study provides a theoretical basis for kiwifruit during cold storage.

The aim of this study is to assess the differences in the meat quality, nutritional composition, carcass traits, and myofiber characteristics between Hy-Line grey chickens (HLG, commercial breed) and Guangyuan grey chickens (GYG, indigenous breed). A total of 20 55-week-old chickens were selected for slaughter. The HLG exhibited a larger carcass weight, breast muscle weight, and abdominal fat weight (p < 0.05). The GYG exhibited a higher crude protein content, lower shear force, and smaller fiber size in the thigh muscles, whereas the HLG presented higher pH values and lower inosine-5′-monophosphate content in the breast muscles (p < 0.05). Darker meat based on higher redness and yellowness values was observed in the GYG instead of the HLG (p < 0.05). The research results also revealed parameter differences between different muscle types. Simultaneously, a correlation analysis showed significant correlations between the meat quality traits and myofiber characteristics (p < 0.05). In conclusion, aged indigenous chickens perform better in terms of tenderness and nutritional value in the thigh muscles, and may exhibit a better flavor in the breast muscles, but have a smaller breast muscle weight. Therefore, the current investigation provides a theoretical basis for the different needs of consumers and the processing of meat from old laying hens.

This paper presents an effective method for measuring oil debris with high confidence to ensure the wear monitoring of aero-engines, which suffers from severe noise interference, weak signal characteristics, and false detection. First, an improved variational mode decomposition algorithm is proposed, which combines wavelet transform and interval threshold processing to suppress the complex noise interference on the signal. Then, a long-short-term memory neural network with deep scattering spectrum preprocessing is used to identify the signal characteristics under the multi-resolution analysis framework. The optimal hyperparameters are automatically configured using Bayesian optimization to solve the problem of weak, distorted, and hard-to-extract signal characteristics. Finally, a detection algorithm based on multi-window fusion judgment is applied to improve the confidence of the detection process, reduce the false detection and false alarm rate, and calculate the debris size information according to the sensor principle. The experimental results show that the proposed method can extract debris signals from noise with a signal-to-noise ratio improvement of more than 9 dB, achieve a high recognition accuracy of 99.76% with a missed detection rate of 0.24%, and output size information of debris to meet the need for aero-engine oil debris measurement.

Supersonic combustion instability studies are crucial for the future maturation of scramjet engines. In the present paper, the supersonic combustion instability in a strut-based scramjet combustor is investigated through large eddy simulation and dynamic mode decomposition. The results show significant pressure oscillation in the strut-based scramjet combustor when the air parameters at the combustor inlet and the fuel parameters at the injector outlet are under certain conditions, and these pressure oscillation situations correspond to supersonic combustion instability. The oscillations have multiple dominant frequencies, including relatively low frequency of 2984 Hz, high frequency of 62,180 Hz, and very high frequency of 110,562 Hz. Large pressure oscillations in the strut-based scramjet combustor are closely related to wake instability, shear layer instability, shear layer and wave interactions, and combustion. Reducing the air total temperature at the combustor inlet can attenuate the pressure oscillations, and reducing the fuel flow rate at the injector outlet can also attenuate the pressure oscillations.

With the increase in drug-resistant bacteria, new antibacterial drugs have emerged as a prominent area of research and development. Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs), as innate immune agents, have garnered significant attention due to their potent, rapid, and broad-spectrum antibacterial activity. This study focused on investigating the functionality of three AMPs (CATH 1, CATH 2, and MAP34-B) derived from goat submandibular glands. Among these AMPs, CATH 2 and MAP34-B exhibited direct antibacterial activity against both Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria, primarily targeting the bacterial membrane. Additionally, these two AMPs were found to have the potential to induce reactive oxygen species (ROS) production in bacterial cells and interact with bacterial genome DNA, which may play a crucial role in their mechanisms of action. Furthermore, both CATH 1 and CATH 2 demonstrated significant antioxidant activity, and all three AMPs exhibited potential anti-inflammatory activity. Importantly, the cytotoxic activity of these AMPs against mammalian cells was found to be weak, and their hemolytic activity was extremely low. Overall, the characteristics of these three AMPs found in goat submandibular glands offer new insights for the study of host protection from an immunological perspective. They hold promise as potential candidates for the development of novel antibacterial agents, particularly in the context of combating drug-resistant bacteria.

A new method for automatic volume determination of loose engineering deposits (LEDs) using point clouds collected by terrestrial laser scanning is proposed. The method starts with a problem of lacking bottom surface point clouds when scanning LEDs, assuming that the bottom surface is flat, a spatial plane is generated based on the plane fitting to the bottom surface. Then the sample point cloud is projected on this fitted plane to construct the subface point clouds, which, together with the initial point cloud data, are stitched into complete point cloud data with good closure, integrity, and accuracy. The 3D surface model established by introducing the alpha shape algorithm calculates the volume, and the validation experiments on three soil mound models and one field experiment on LEDs with a minimum average error of only 1.69% fully validate the effectiveness and accuracy of the method. The encouraging results show that effective volume calculation can be performed on realistic LEDs using the proposed method.

Evidence shows that biotic and abiotic factors have apparent diversity at different forest ages, leading to changes in rhizosphere microbiomes. However, the difference in diversity, co-occurrence pattern, and assembly of the rhizosphere microbial community among the different forest ages is still unclear. A total of 24 Juniperus przewalskii rhizosphere soil samples were selected from four representative age classes, using diameter at breast height (DBH) as a proxy for tree age (age class I: 5 < DBH ≤ 12.5 cm, age class II: 12.5 < DBH ≤ 22.5 cm, age class III: 22.5 < DBH ≤ 32.5 cm, and age class IV: DBH > 32.5 cm), and analyzed the structural characteristics of the soil microbial community by high-throughput amplicon sequencing. With the increase in age class, the microbial community α-diversity and β-diversity had an increased trend. The bacterial Shannon index in class II and class III were markedly higher than in class I. From class I to class IV, the relative abundances of dominant phyla such as Actinobacteria and Ascomycota decreased, and the relative abundances of Proteobacteria and Basidiomycota increased in contrast. The complexity and association stability of the bacteria and fungi community network structure increase with forest age. Stochastic processes mediated the assembly of soil bacterial communities, while deterministic processes played a more significant role in the assembly of fungal communities. In addition, the relative importance of deterministic components in the microbial community increased significantly with age class. Random forests suggested that soil pH, plant Shannon–Wiener index (H), and Pielou’s evenness index (J) were the most important driving factors of bacterial and fungal community assembly. Overall, these results provide information useful for understanding the generation and maintenance mechanisms of rhizosphere microbial communities across age classes.

Aged chickens are often a secondary dietary choice, owing to the poor organoleptic qualities of their meat. With regard to the meat quality of chickens, the metabolic profiles of pectoral muscle in Guangyuan grey chickens (group G) and Hy-Line grey hens (group H) aged 55 weeks were compared via ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC-MS/MS). A total of 74 metabolites were identified with differential changes in the ion model. Lipids and lipid-like molecules comprised the largest proportion among the different metabolites. The content of myristic acid and palmitic acid were found to be higher in the pectoral muscle of group G, while group H showed significantly higher levels of glycerophospholipid molecules, such as LPC(18:2/0:0), Pi(38:5), Pc(16:0/16:0), and Pe(16:1e/14-hdohe). KEGG pathway analysis indicated that the abundant metabolites in group G were mainly involved in energy metabolism and fatty acid biosynthesis and metabolism, whereas those of group H were mainly attributed to the metabolism of unsaturated fatty acids and amino acids. Overall, the differences in lipid and amino acid metabolism in pectoral muscle appear to be responsible for the difference in meat quality between indigenous chickens and commercial laying hens.

The musculoskeletal system (MSKS) is composed of specialized connective tissues including bone, muscle, cartilage, tendon, ligament, and their subtypes. The primary function of the MSKS is to provide protection, structure, mobility, and mechanical properties to the body. In the process of fulfilling these functions, the MSKS is subject to wear and tear during aging and after injury and requires subsequent repair. MSKS diseases are a growing burden due to the increasing population age. The World Health Organization estimates that 1.71 billon people suffer from MSKS diseases worldwide. MSKS diseases usually involve various dysfunctions in bones, muscles, and joints, which often result in pain, disability, and a decrease in quality of life. The most common MSKS diseases are osteoporosis (loss of bone), osteoarthritis (loss of cartilage), and sarcopenia (loss of skeletal muscle). Because of the disease burden and the need for treatment, regenerative drug therapies for MSKS disorders are increasingly in demand. However, the difficulty of effective drug delivery in the MSKS has become a bottleneck for developing MSKS therapeutics. The abundance of extracellular matrix and its small pore size in the MSKS present a formidable barrier to drug delivery. Differences of vascularity among various MSKS tissues pose complications for drug delivery. Novel strategies are necessary to achieve successful drug delivery in different tissues composing the MSKS. Those considerations include the route of administration, mechanics of surrounding fluids, and biomolecular interactions, such as the size and charge of the particles and targeting motifs. This review focuses on recent advances in challenges to deliver drugs to each tissue of the MSKS, current strategies of drug delivery, and future ideas of how to overcome drug delivery challenges in the MSKS.
