This paper investigates the use of fractional-slot concentrated windings (FSCWs) in large-scale (MW level) offshore wind generators. It focuses specifically on a power rating of 3 MW and uses an existing direct-drive synchronous PM machine (DD-SPM) with 480s/160p and dual three-phase integer-slot winding (ISW) as a baseline. A multiple of the common 12s/10p FSCW machine is used that matches the electrical frequency of the ISW machine, yielding a 192s/160p dual three-phase machine. The hybrid star–delta connection has grown increasingly popular owing to its unique harmonic cancellation properties, which can help reduce rotor and PM eddy current losses in FSCW machines. In this paper, two dual three-phase star–delta-wound machines are scaled to 3 MW and included in the investigation. Specifically, a 384s/160p dual three-phase and dual star–delta winding machine, which is a multiplication of the 24s/10p machine, and a 192s/176p dual three-phase and dual star–delta winding machine, which is a multiplication of the 24s/22p machine, are used. These machines are investigated using finite element analysis (FEA) and compared on the basis of their air-gap flux density harmonics, open-circuit electro-motive force (EMF), torque performance, and losses and power. It is found that the proposed 384s/160p dual star–delta winding machine has the best electromagnetic performance of all, with a stator power that is 1.2% greater than that of the baseline ISW machine. However, this machine has a coil pitch of 2 and so loses the manufacturing and fault-tolerant advantage of having concentrated windings. If concentrated windings are desired, then the proposed 192s/176p dual star–delta winding machine is the best choice, with the stator power only 2.6% less than that of the baseline ISW machine, but unfortunately still has significant rotor and PM eddy current losses.

Wire arc additive manufacturing (WAAM) technology enables the fabrication of functionally graded materials (FGMs) by adjusting the wire feed speed of different welding wires in a layer-by-layer manner. This study aimed to produce SS 316L/Inconel 625 FGMs with varying transition compositions using dual-wire arc additive manufacturing (D-WAAM). An optimization strategy for transition gradients was implemented to exclude component regions that are prone to defect formation (notably cracking), as well as to retain other component regions, thereby enhancing the overall mechanical properties of FGMs. The study revealed grain boundary cracking and demonstrated the lowest microhardness and tensile properties within a 20 wt.% Inconel 625 transition gradient zone, which negatively impacts the overall mechanical properties of FGMs. Then, as the content of Inconel 625 in the first transition region increased, cracks disappeared, microhardness increased and better tensile properties were obtained. The most optimal mechanical properties were enriched at 50 wt.% Inconel 625 content. In conclusion, the compositional gradient optimization strategy proves efficacious in eliminating component regions with poor mechanical properties and microdefects, ensuring excellent overall mechanical characteristics of FGMs.

SHP2, a pivotal component downstream of both receptor and non-receptor tyrosine kinases, has been underscored in the progression of various human cancers and neurodevelopmental disorders. Allosteric inhibitors have been proposed to regulate its autoinhibition. However, oncogenic mutations, such as E76K, convert SHP2 into its open state, wherein the catalytic cleft becomes fully exposed to its ligands. This study elucidates the dynamic properties of SHP2 structures across different states, with a focus on the effects of oncogenic mutation on two known binding sites of allosteric inhibitors. Through extensive modeling and simulations, we further identified an alternative allosteric binding pocket in solution structures. Additional analysis provides insights into the dynamics and stability of the potential site. In addition, multi-tier screening was deployed to identify potential binders targeting the potential site. Our efforts to identify a new allosteric site contribute to community-wide initiatives developing therapies using multiple allosteric inhibitors to target distinct pockets on SHP2, in the hope of potentially inhibiting or slowing tumor growth associated with SHP2.

Aluminum–magnesium (Al–Mg) alloys, known for their lightweight properties, are extensively utilized and crucial in the advancement of wire and arc additive manufacturing (WAAM) for direct high-quality printing—a focal point in additive manufacturing research. This study employed 1.2 mm ER5356 welding wire as the raw material to fabricate two sets of 30-layer thin-walled structures. These sets were manufactured using two distinct welding modes, speed-twin pulse (STP) and twin pulse (TP). Comparative evaluations of the surface quality, microstructures, and mechanical properties of the two sets of samples indicated that both the STP and TP modes were suitable for the WAAM of Al–Mg alloys. Analyses of grain growth in the melt pools of both sample sets revealed a non-preferential grain orientation, with a mixed arrangement of equiaxed and columnar grains. The STP mode notably achieved a refined surface finish, a reduced grain size, and a slight increase in tensile strength compared to the TP mode. From the comparison of the tensile data at the bottom, middle, and top of the two groups of samples, the additive manufacturing process in the STP mode was more stable.

High-performance electrochromic (EC) and electrofluorochromic (EFC) materials have garnered considerable interest due to their diverse applications in smart windows, optoelectronics, optical displays, military camouflage, etc. While many different EC and EFC polymers have been reported, their preparation often requires multiple steps, and their polymer molecular weights are subjected to batch variation. In this work, we prepared two triphenylamine (TPA)-based and two tetraphenylethylene (TPE)-based derivatives functionalized with terminal styryl groups via direct Suzuki coupling with (4-vinylphenyl)boronic acid and vinylboronic acid pinacol ester. The two novel TPE derivatives exhibited green–yellow aggregation-induced emission (AIE). The EC and EFC properties of pre- and post-thermally treated derivatives spin-coated onto ITO–glass substrates were studied. While all four derivatives showed modest absorption changes with applied voltages up to +2.4 V, retaining a high degree of optical transparency, they exhibited obvious EFC properties with the quenching of blue to yellow fluorescence with IOFF/ON contrast ratios of up to 7.0. The findings therefore demonstrate an elegant approach to preparing optically transparent, heat-induced, cross-linkable styryl-functionalized EFC systems.

The large-sized Tarangaole uranium deposit and its neighboring Daying and Nalinggou deposits, located in the northeastern margin of the Ordos Basin, constitutes a major uranium resource base in northern China. In order to further clarify the sedimentary material source, uranium source and regional sediment–tectonic setting of the uranium-fed clastic rocks (i.e., Zhiluo Formation(J2z)) in the district, this paper carried out whole-rock geochemistry, heavy minerals composition and in situ U-Pb dating of detrital zircons for sandstones from the lower section of the Zhiluo Formation. The results have shown that the average chemical differentiation index (CIA) for the host rocks is 73.16 and the chemical weathering degree is moderate. Heavy minerals are mainly composed of ilmenite, garnet, chlorpyrite, zircon, pyrite, apatite, hematite, etc. The U-Pb dating of detrital zircon generally indicates three age peaks, i.e., 260~Ma, 1850~Ma and 2450~Ma, respectively. In conclusion, the source rocks may have been formed at active continental margins, e.g., in a continental margin arc environment. The sedimentary materials mainly come from khondalite series, TTGs, granulite, and mafic–ultramafic intrusive rocks distributed among the Daqing–Ula Mountains and adjacent areas, etc. The Late Paleozoic U-rich intermediate and acidic magmatic rocks spreading over the eastern part of the Ula–Daqing and Wolf mountains have provided the main uranium sources for the formation of major U deposits in the northern Ordos Basin.

Cardiomyocytes rely on proper mitochondrial homeostasis to maintain contractility and achieve optimal cardiac performance. Mitochondrial homeostasis is controlled by mitochondrial fission, fusion, and mitochondrial autophagy (mitophagy). Mitophagy plays a particularly important role in promoting the degradation of dysfunctional mitochondria in terminally differentiated cells. However, the precise mechanisms by which this is achieved in cardiomyocytes remain opaque. Our study identifies GRAF1 as an important mediator in PINK1-Parkin pathway-dependent mitophagy. Depletion of GRAF1 (Arhgap26) in cardiomyocytes results in actin remodeling defects, suboptimal mitochondria clustering, and clearance. Mechanistically, GRAF1 promotes Parkin-LC3 complex formation and directs autophagosomes to damaged mitochondria. Herein, we found that these functions are regulated, at least in part, by the direct binding of GRAF1 to phosphoinositides (PI(3)P, PI(4)P, and PI(5)P) on autophagosomes. In addition, PINK1-dependent phosphorylation of Parkin promotes Parkin-GRAF1-LC3 complex formation, and PINK1-dependent phosphorylation of GRAF1 (on S668 and S671) facilitates the clustering and clearance of mitochondria. Herein, we developed new phosphor-specific antibodies to these sites and showed that these post-translational modifications are differentially modified in human hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and dilated cardiomyopathy. Furthermore, our metabolic studies using serum collected from isoproterenol-treated WT and GRAF1CKO mice revealed defects in mitophagy-dependent cardiomyocyte fuel flexibility that have widespread impacts on systemic metabolism. In summary, our study reveals that GRAF1 co-regulates actin and membrane dynamics to promote cardiomyocyte mitophagy and that dysregulation of GRAF1 post-translational modifications may underlie cardiac disease pathogenesis.

Bark is vital for woody plants, providing protection, transporting nutrients and water, and storing essential resources. For fire-prone ecosystems, bark thickness is a key adaptive trait conferring fire resistance. Few studies have been conducted on the drivers of variation in bark thickness of the widely distributed Larix gmelinii (Rupr.) Kuzen in the Great Xing’an Mountains region, on the southern edge of East Siberia, where surface fire disturbances are frequent. To elucidate the relationships between variation in bark thickness (inner vs. outer bark) of L. gmelinii and plant size, environmental factors, and co-variation with other fire-tolerance traits, we selected 26 sites to set up plots and carried out a survey and bark sampling. Results showed that stem diameter primarily determines variation in bark thickness, especially outer bark. The proportion of outer bark to total bark increased accordingly as the tree increased in size. We also observed stronger correlated variation in outer bark thickness, tree height, and self-pruning capacity, implying that larger trees have thicker protective outer bark and taller heights with greater self-pruning, mitigating crown fire risks. Environmental factors appear to have a relatively limited effect on changes in bark thickness in L. gmelinii. Mean air temperature, annual precipitation, and total soil nitrogen content had some effect on outer bark thickness, and mean air temperature had some effect on inner bark thickness.

Recent observational studies have reported associations between serum mineral nutrient levels, gut microbiota composition, and neurological, psychiatric, and metabolic diseases. However, the causal effects of mineral nutrients on gut microbiota and their causal associations with diseases remain unclear and require further investigation. This study aimed to identify the associations between serum mineral nutrients, gut microbiota, and risk of neurological, psychiatric, and metabolic diseases using Mendelian randomization (MR). We conducted an MR study using the large-scale genome-wide association study (GWAS) summary statistics of 5 serum mineral nutrients, 196 gut microbes at the phylum, order, family, and genus levels, and a variety of common neurological, psychiatric, and metabolic diseases. Initially, the independent causal associations of mineral nutrients and gut microbiota with diseases were examined by MR. Subsequently, the causal effect of mineral nutrients on gut microbiota was estimated to investigate whether specific gut microbes mediated the association between mineral nutrients and diseases. Finally, we performed sensitivity analyses to assess the robustness of the study results. After correcting for multiple testing, we identified a total of 33 causal relationships among mineral nutrients, gut microbiota, and diseases. Specifically, we found 4 causal relationships between 3 mineral nutrition traits and 3 disease traits, 15 causal associations between 14 gut microbiota traits and 6 disease traits, and 14 causal associations involving 4 mineral nutrition traits and 15 gut microbiota traits. Meanwhile, 118 suggestive associations were identified. The current study reveals multiple causal associations between serum mineral nutrients, gut microbiota, risk of neurological, psychiatric, and metabolic diseases, and potentially provides valuable insights for subsequent nutritional therapies.

Atherosclerosis remains a leading cause of cardiovascular diseases. Although the mechanism for atherosclerosis is complex and has not been fully understood, inflammation and oxidative stress play a critical role in the development and progression of atherosclerosis. N-acetylcysteine (NAC) has been used as a mucolytic agent and an antidote for acetaminophen overdose with a well-established safety profile. NAC has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects through multiple mechanisms, including an increase in the intracellular glutathione level and an attenuation of the nuclear factor kappa-B mediated production of inflammatory cytokines like tumor necrosis factor-alpha and interleukins. Numerous animal studies have demonstrated that NAC significantly decreases the development and progression of atherosclerosis. However, the data on the outcomes of clinical studies in patients with atherosclerosis have been limited and inconsistent. The purpose of this review is to summarize the data on the effect of NAC on atherosclerosis from both pre-clinical and clinical studies and discuss the potential mechanisms of action of NAC on atherosclerosis, as well as challenges in the field.

This study introduces a meticulously constructed genome assembly at the chromosome level for the Rosaceae family species Prinsepia uniflora, a traditional Chinese medicinal herb. The final assembly encompasses 1272.71 megabases (Mb) distributed across 16 pseudochromosomes, boasting contig and super-scaffold N50 values of 2.77 and 79.32 Mb, respectively. Annotated within this genome is a substantial 875.99 Mb of repetitive sequences, with transposable elements occupying 777.28 Mb, constituting 61.07% of the entire genome. Our predictive efforts identified 49,261 protein-coding genes within the repeat-masked assembly, with 45,256 (91.87%) having functional annotations, 5127 (10.41%) demonstrating tandem duplication, and 2373 (4.82%) classified as transcription factor genes. Additionally, our investigation unveiled 3080 non-coding RNAs spanning 0.51 Mb of the genome sequences. According to our evolutionary study, P. uniflora underwent recent whole-genome duplication following its separation from Prunus salicina. The presented reference-level genome assembly and annotation for P. uniflora will significantly facilitate the in-depth exploration of genomic information pertaining to this species, offering substantial utility in comparative genomics and evolutionary analyses involving Rosaceae species.

With the development of product miniaturization in aerospace, the nuclear industry, and other fields, Ni-Co-based superalloys with excellent overall properties have become key materials for micro components in these fields. In the microforming field, size effects significantly impact the mechanical properties and plastic deformation behavior of materials. In this paper, micro-tensile experiments at room temperature and an ultra-low temperature were carried out to study the effects of initial microstructure and deformation temperature on the deformation behavior of Ni-Co-based superalloy thin sheets. The results show that as the ratio of specimen thickness to grain size (t/d) decreased from 8.6 to 2.4, the tensile strength σb decreased from 1221 MPa to 1090 MPa, the yield strength σs decreased from 793 MPa to 622 MPa, and the elongation decreased from 0.26 to 0.21 at room temperature. When t/d decreased from 8.6 to 2.4, σb decreased from 1458 MPa to 1132 MPa, σs decreased from 917 MPa to 730 MPa, and the elongation decreased from 0.31 to 0.28 at ultra-low temperatures. When t/d decreased from 8.6 to 2.4, the surface roughness of the specimen increased from 0.769 to 0.890 at room temperature and increased from 0.648 to 0.809 at ultra-low temperatures. During the microplastic deformation process of Ni-Co-based superalloy thin sheets, the coupled effects of surface roughening caused by free surface grains and hindered dislocation movement induced by grain boundary resulted in strain localization, which caused fracture failure of Ni-Co-based superalloy thin sheets.

Butter layers of different thicknesses were successfully deposited on ferritic steel by using the tungsten arc welding (TIG) process. The effects of butter layer thickness on the microstructural characteristics, elemental distribution, and mechanical properties of underwater wet 16Mn/304L dissimilar welded joints were investigated. The results showed that the butter layer significantly changed the microstructure and elemental distribution of 16Mn/304L joints. As the thickness of butter increased, the heat-affected zone (HAZ) at the ferritic steel side changed from the original 16Mn steel to the ERNiCrMo-3 butter layer. The martensite content in HAZ also exhibited a downward trend. When the thickness of the butter layer exceeded 6 mm, the microstructure of HAZ at the ferritic steel side was composed of ferrite and pearlite, instead of quenched martensite. The microhardness of underwater dissimilar steel welded joints significantly reduced due to the absence of martensite. The addition of the butter layer increased the ultimate tensile strength from 515 MPa to 565 MPa. The results of this work could provide a robust basis for future applications of dissimilar steel structures.

With chronic ocular diseases such as glaucoma and dry eye syndrome, patients have to apply eye drops over the long term. The therapeutic effects of eye drops depend on the amount of drug contained and the stability of the solution. In addition, contamination during usage and transport can also negatively affect the quality and efficacy of eye drops. The current techniques for the characterization of eye drops are often complicated and time-consuming. Developing a fast and non-invasive way of accurately measuring eye drop quality remains an ongoing challenge. The biggest challenge and primary prerequisite for the application of this new detection technique for eye drops is the obtention of a sufficient spectral response and resolvable signal, considering the large background signal contributed by water. In this work, we use terahertz (THz) attenuated total reflection (ATR) spectroscopy combined with a sensitive hybrid graphene oxide (GO) and carbon nanotube (CNT) thin-film sensors to obtain distinct THz spectral signals in commercial eye drops. Various commercial eye drop products have been tested, and we show that they can be differentiated via their spectral signals. Our results provide a solid foundation for the future fine analysis of eye drops and the detection of their quality. Furthermore, THz spectroscopy combined with GO/CNT films has significant potential and advantages for the non-destructive characterization of aqueous pharmaceutical products.

The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the urgent need for accurate, rapid, and cost-effective diagnostic methods to identify and track the disease. Traditional diagnostic methods, such as PCR and serological assays, have limitations in terms of sensitivity, specificity, and timeliness. To investigate the potential of using protein–peptide hybrid microarray (PPHM) technology to track the dynamic changes of antibodies in the serum of COVID-19 patients and evaluate the prognosis of patients over time. A discovery cohort of 20 patients with COVID-19 was assembled, and PPHM technology was used to track the dynamic changes of antibodies in the serum of these patients. The results were analyzed to classify the patients into different disease severity groups, and to predict the disease progression and prognosis of the patients. PPHM technology was found to be highly effective in detecting the dynamic changes of antibodies in the serum of COVID-19 patients. Four polypeptide antibodies were found to be particularly useful for reflecting the actual status of the patient’s recovery process and for accurately predicting the disease progression and prognosis of the patients. The findings of this study emphasize the multi-dimensional space of peptides to analyze the high-volume signals in the serum samples of COVID-19 patients and monitor the prognosis of patients over time. PPHM technology has the potential to be a powerful tool for tracking the dynamic changes of antibodies in the serum of COVID-19 patients and for improving the diagnosis and prognosis of the disease.

The fast development of urban built-up areas in China is causing many problems, such as pollution, congestion, etc. How to effectively evaluate the coordination between urban areas and environmental problems has been attracting many scholars worldwide. This paper intends to discover this “secretary” through investigating the built-up areas and their accompanied economic and environmental factors over almost 30 years (1992 to 2020) in Nanjing, China. DMSP/OLS nighttime lights images from 1992 to 2013 and the NPP/VIIRS nighttime lights images from 2012 to 2022 are used for extraction of built-up areas. A spatiotemporal evolution model is established to evaluate whether the built-up areas have developed in coordination and the relationship between urban built-up areas and various factors, including compactness, the fractal dimension, boundary and shape changes, exhaust emissions, and the production of general industrial solid waste, which was further investigated to ascertain whether there was coordination or not. The investigated results discovered that Nanjing’s built-up areas had maintained continuous growth from 1992 to 2020, with the compactness of built-up areas gradually decreasing from 0.42 to 0.23 and the built-up differentiation dimension changing from 1.31 to 1.39, demonstrating that built-up areas had gradually moved from a loose pattern to a compact pattern and from irregular development to balanced development in all directions. The macro model of the coordination index change trend is 0.847 from 1995 to 2020, which indicates that the coordination between urban built-up areas of development and their environments has been improving; however, the reduction in urban green space, the increase in waste emissions, and the increased production of general industrial solid waste has raised questions regarding sustainable development.

Lysine malonylation (Kmal) is an evolutionarily conserved post-translational modification (PTM) that has been demonstrated to be involved in cellular and organismal metabolism. However, the role that Kmal plays in response to drought stress of the terrestrial cyanobacteria N. flagelliforme is still unknown. In this study, we performed the first proteomic analysis of Kmal in N. flagelliforme under different drought stresses using LC-MS/MS. In total, 421 malonylated lysine residues were found in 236 different proteins. GO and KEGG enrichment analysis indicated that these malonylated proteins were highly enriched in several metabolic pathways, including carbon metabolism and photosynthesis. Decreased malonylation levels were found to hinder the reception and transmission of light energy and CO2 fixation, which led to a decrease in photosynthetic activity. Kmal was also shown to inhibit the flux of the TCA cycle and activate the gluconeogenesis pathway in response to drought stress. Furthermore, malonylated antioxidant enzymes and antioxidants were synergistically involved in reactive oxygen species (ROS) scavenging. Malonylation was involved in lipid degradation and amino acid biosynthesis as part of drought stress adaptation. This work represents the first comprehensive investigation of the role of malonylation in dehydrated N. flagelliforme, providing an important resource for understanding the drought tolerance mechanism of this organism.

Alumino-thermic additions to the flux-cored wire can be utilized to enhance welding heat input, improve welding productivity, and minimize the dependency on power sources in the air environment. In this article, the influence of Al/Fe2O3 thermite on electrical dependency, microstructural characteristics, and mechanical performance during the underwater wet welding of Q235 steel was investigated. The results revealed that adding exothermic flux enhanced the underwater wet welding appearance. The basicity of the slag steadily decreased from 1.77 to 0.73 because of the formation of Al2O3. Thermite increased the quantity and diameter of inclusions in the underwater wet weld metal. The excessive addition of Al/Fe2O3 thermite resulted in agglomerated inclusions in the weld metal. Significant microstructural changes from grain boundary ferrite to acicular ferrite were mainly caused by the de-oxidation products of the thermite process. When thermite was added to the flux-cored wire, the ultimate tensile strength first increased and then decreased, while the microhardness of the underwater wet welds showed an obviously increasing trend. The addition of exothermic flux additions to the flux-cored wire can help generate chemical heat and increase the energy required to melt the wire. This study established a link between thermite addition and joint performance, paving the way for the development and application of thermite-assisted self-shielded flux-cored wire.

The presence of multiple accessory spleens in the abdominal cavity is typically limited to two, with cases involving a higher number being exceedingly rare. Concurrently, accessory spleen infarction is remarkably uncommon, primarily resulting from torsion of the vascular pedicle. In this report, we present a case of a 19-year-old male who experienced infarction in one of four accessory spleens. Imaging diagnosis proved challenging, with the definitive diagnosis being made through postoperative pathology, revealing no torsion in the affected accessory spleen. Following surgery combined with anti-inflammatory and analgesic treatment, the patient exhibited an uneventful recovery. No complications were observed at the 3-month follow-up. This case indicates the challenge and difficulty of diagnosing accessory splenic infarction without torsion in imaging diagnosis. Employing a multimodality approach and diffusion-weighted imaging may aid in confirming the diagnosis.

Surface crack detection and sizing is essential for the manufacturing and maintenance of engines, run parts, and other metal elements of aircrafts. Among various non-destructive detection methods, the fully non-contact and non-intrusive technique based on laser-stimulated lock-in thermography (LLT) has recently attracted a lot of attention from the aerospace industry. We propose and demonstrate a system of reconfigurable LLT for three-dimensional surface crack detection in metal alloys. For large area inspection, the multi-spot LLT can speed up the inspection time by a factor of the number of spots. The minimum resolved size of micro-holes is ~50 µm in diameter limited by the magnification of the camera lens. We also study the crack length ranging from 0.8 to 3.4 mm by varying the modulation frequency of LLT. An empirical parameter related to the thermal diffusion length is found to show the linear dependence with the crack length. With the proper calibration, this parameter can be used to predict the sizing of the surface fatigue cracks. Reconfigurable LLT allows us to quickly locate the crack position and accurately measure its dimensions. This method is also applicable to the non-destructive detection of surface or sub-surface defect in other materials used in various industries.

At present, basalt fiber-reinforced polymer (BFRP) bars and epoxy-coated steel reinforcing bars (ECRs) are very promising in ocean engineering. In this study, the bond strength degradation characteristics of BFRP bars, ECR, and ordinary steel bars (OSBs) embedded in ceramsite concrete (CC) were compared in a single-corrosive environment (acid, salt, and alkaline salt, respectively) coupled with freeze–thaw (FT) cycles (0, 15, or 30); a total of 111 specimens were designed. In the three corrosive environments, the BFRP-bar-CC specimens and OSB-CC specimens all failed to pull out, while the ECR-CC specimens showed splitting failure. When corrosive and FT cycles acted together, the failure modes of BFRP-bar-CC specimens and ECR-CC specimens did not change. However, when the FT cycles increased from 15 to 30, the type of failure for the OSB-CC specimens changed from pullout failure to splitting failure. In addition, the bonding strength of the three kinds of bars decayed most rapidly in an acid environment. When 30 FT cycles were applied, the bond strength of ECR-CC specimens and OSB-CC specimens decreased most rapidly in the acid environment, by 9.12% and 18.62%, respectively. However, the bond strength of BFRP-bar-CC decreased most rapidly, by 17.2%, in an alkaline salt environment.

This paper presents coupled electromagnetic (EM)–thermal modelling of the steady-state dynamic performances, such as torque speed curve and the efficiency map, for surface-mounted permanent magnet machines. One important feature of such a model is that it considers the demagnetization caused by magnet temperature rise at different rotor speeds. EM-only simulations, which often assume that the machines operate under constant temperature, have been widely used in the literature. However, the interaction between EM and thermal performances could lead to very different dynamic performance prediction. This is because the material properties, e.g., magnet remanence, coercivity, and copper resistivity are temperature-dependent. The temperature rise within electrical machines reduces torque/power density, PM eddy current losses, and iron losses but increases copper loss. Therefore, the coupled EM–thermal modelling is essential to determine accurate temperature variation and to obtain accurate EM performances of electrical machines. In this paper, the coupled EM–thermal modelling is implemented for both modular and non-modular machines to reveal the advantages of the modular machine under different operating conditions. The results show that the modular machine generally has better dynamic performance than the non-modular machine because the introduced flux gaps in alternate stator teeth can boost both EM and thermal performance.

In-situ alloying is a facile method for exploring high-performance metallic materials for additive manufacturing. However, composition inhomogeneity is inevitable, and it is a double-edged sword for the properties of in-situ alloyed parts. Appropriately controlling the composition inhomogeneity benefits the applications of in-situ alloying in specific microstructural and properties design. In this work, the Al20Cu alloy was selected as the benchmark alloy to investigate the tailoring of composition inhomogeneity. The morphology and area percentage of composition inhomogeneity in the as-built samples were firstly analyzed. These results provided evidence for the formation of composition inhomogeneity and indicate that its content is tightly dependent on processing parameters. The characteristics of the molten pool under various processing parameters were investigated by modeling the laser remelting process. Based on these, a processing map was established to guide the tailoring of composition inhomogeneity. This study expands the understanding of the formation mechanism of composition inhomogeneity in in-situ alloyed parts and sheds light on employing laser powder bed fusion in-situ alloying for new materials development.

This paper investigates magnet demagnetization characteristics of the modular permanent magnet machine. The influence of flux gaps on magnet flux density, losses distribution, torque and demagnetization are analyzed for different operating conditions. The magnet demagnetizations caused by three sources, such as the PM field, the armature field, and the magnet temperature rise, are individually investigated using the frozen permeability method. Furthermore, coupled electromagnetic (EM)-thermal modelling is also adopted in this paper to fully reveal the advantages of the modular machine in improving machine EM performances. This is essential due to the temperature-dependent properties of the machines, such as the magnet remanence, coercivity, and copper resistivity. For comparison propose, the EM performances with a particular focus on the demagnetization withstand capability for both the modular and non-modular machines are investigated based on the EM-thermal coupling. It is found that, compared to the non-modular machine, the modular machine can achieve higher torque, higher efficiency, and better demagnetization withstand capability.

Permanent magnet (PM) machines have been extensively used for various applications. Nevertheless, thermal effect, particularly hotspot temperature, not only severely restricts power/torque density but also leads to deteriorations in electromagnetic performance, service life, and reliability. Starting with foundations of PM machines and heat transfer mechanisms, this paper reviews the development of thermal analysis methods over the last thirty years and the state-of-the-art research achievements, and the hotspot temperatures of winding and PM are particularly evaluated. In the overview, various machine losses and cooling techniques are first introduced, which are the essential reasons for temperature rise and the most straightforward way to remove the generated heat. Afterwards, the mainstream thermal analysis techniques, i.e., numerical techniques, lumped-parameter thermal model, and hybrid thermal models, as well as the online electrical parameter-based and thermal model-based temperature monitoring techniques, are reviewed and assessed in depth. In addition, this paper also reviews the analytical thermal modelling methods for winding and PM. Finally, future research trends are highlighted.

The technology of long reads substantially improved the contingency of the genome assembly, particularly resolving contiguity of the repetitive regions. By integrating the interactive fragment using Hi-C, and the HiFi technique, a solid genome of the honeybee Apis mellifera carnica was assembled at the chromosomal level. A distinctive pattern of genes involved in social evolution was found by comparing it with social and solitary bees. A positive selection was identified in genes involved with cold tolerance, which likely underlies the adaptation of this European honeybee subspecies in the north hemisphere. The availability of this new high-quality genome will foster further studies and advances on genome variation during subspeciation, honeybee breeding and comparative genomics.

(1) Background: Glioma is the most common primary tumor in the central nervous system, and glioma-related epilepsy (GRE) is one of its common symptoms. The abnormalities of white matter fiber tracts are involved in attributing changes in patients with epilepsy (Rudà, R, 2012).This study aimed to assess frontal lobe gliomas’ effects on the cerebral white matter fiber tracts. (2) Methods: Thirty patients with frontal lobe glioma were enrolled and divided into two groups (Ep and nEep). Among them, five patients were excluded due to apparent insular or temporal involvement. A set of 14 age and gender-matched healthy controls were also included. All the enrolled subjects underwent preoperative conventional magnetic resonance images (MRI) and diffusion tensor imaging (DTI). Furthermore, we used tract-based spatial statistics to analyze the characteristics of the white matter fiber tracts. (3) Results: The two patient groups showed similar patterns of mean diffusivity (MD) elevations in most regions; however, in the ipsilateral inferior fronto-occipital fasciculus (IFOF), superior longitudinal fasciculus (SLF), and superior corona radiata, the significant voxels of the EP group were more apparent than in the nEP group. No significant fractional anisotropy (FA) elevations or MD degenerations were found in the current study. (4) Conclusions: Gliomas grow and invade along white matter fiber tracts. This study assessed the effects of GRE on the white matter fiber bundle skeleton by TBSS, and we found that the changes in the white matter skeleton of the frontal lobe tumor-related epilepsy were mainly concentrated in the IFOF, SLF, and superior corona radiata. This reveals that GRE significantly affects the white matter fiber microstructure of the tumor.

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) produces significant systemic inflammation and increases the risk of endothelial dysfunction and peripheral artery disease. Our recent study demonstrated that abdominal aortic endothelial cell function was impaired selectively in female mice with chronic colitis. This study aimed to test the hypothesis that experimental colitis leads to femoral artery endothelial cell dysfunction and impairs limb ischemia recovery in female mice. An experimental chronic colitis model was created in female C57BL/6 mice with dextran sodium sulfate (DSS) treatment. Unilateral hind limb ischemia was produced by femoral artery ligation. Limb blood perfusion, vascular density, tissue ROS levels, and plasma levels of proinflammatory cytokines were assessed. Femoral artery endothelium-dependent and -independent vasodilation of the contralateral limb were evaluated ex vivo using acetylcholine and nitroglycerin, respectively. As expected, the plasma levels of proinflammatory cytokines, including tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α), interleukin (IL)-6, and IL-17, were significantly increased in the DSS-induced colitis model. However, ROS levels in the ischemic muscle tissues were not significantly increased in colitis model as compared to the controls. There were no significant changes in endothelium-dependent or -independent vasodilation of the femoral artery between colitis model and the control. Recovery of function and blood flow in the ischemic limb and capillary density in the ischemic gastrocnemius muscle were preserved in the colitis model as compared with the control. The data demonstrated that DSS-induced chronic colitis had no significant impact on femoral artery endothelial function or ischemic limb recovery in female mice.

Direct-drive generators are an attractive candidate for wind power application since they do not need a gearbox, thus increasing operational reliability and reducing power losses. However, this is achieved at the cost of an increased generator size, larger inverter and decreased thermal performance. The associated cooling system is therefore crucial to keep the generator and inverter sizes down and to operate within the safe thermal limits. Various cooling techniques suitable for generators are therefore reviewed and analyzed in this paper. The performance and maintenance requirements are unavoidable compromises that need to be investigated together, especially for large generators. The location of the wind turbine is also important and dictates critical issues such as accessibility and maximum size. The key novelty in this paper is the assessment of the cooling methods based on generator size, reliability and maintenance requirements.

This paper investigates and compares the torque-generating capabilities and electromagnetic performance of advanced non-overlapping winding induction machines (AIM), conventional induction machines (CIM), and interior-permanent magnet (IPM) machines for electric vehicle (EV) applications. All investigated machines are designed based on the specifications of the Toyota Prius 2010 IPM machine. The steady-state and flux-weakening performance characteristics are calculated by employing the 2D finite element method and MatLab, and the obtained results are quantitatively compared. Furthermore, the torque-generating capabilities of three machines are investigated for different electric loadings, and the machine having the highest torque-generating capability is determined as AIM. Moreover, the major parameters affecting the torque-generating capability, such as magnetic saturation and magnet demagnetization, are examined in depth.

Nostoc flagelliforme is a kind of terrestrial edible cyanobacteria with important ecological and economic value which has developed special mechanisms to adapt to drought conditions. However, the specific mechanism of lipidome changes in drought tolerance of N. flagelliforme has not been well understood. In this study, the ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry were employed to analyze the lipidome changes of N. flagelliforme under dehydration. A total of 853 lipid molecules were identified, of which 171 were significantly different from that of the control group. The digalactosyldiacylglycerol/monogalactosyldiacylglycerol (DGDG/MGDG) ratio was increased. The amount of wax ester (WE) was sharply decreased during drought stress, while Co (Q10) was accumulated. The levels of odd chain fatty acids (OCFAs) were increased under dehydration, positively responding to drought stress according to the energy metabolism state. In conclusion, the lipidomic data corroborated that oxidation, degradation, and biosynthesis of membrane lipids took place during lipid metabolism, which can respond to drought stress through the transformation of energy and substances. Besides, we constructed a lipid metabolic model demonstrating the regulatory mechanism of drought stress in N. flagelliforme. The present study provides insight into the defense strategies of cyanobacteria in lipid metabolic pathways.

Functional and robust catalyst supports are vital in the catalysis field, and the development of universal and efficient catalyst support is essential but challenging. Traditional catalyst fabrication methods include the carbonization of ordered templates and high−temperature dehydration. All these methods involve complicated meso−structural disordering and allow little control over morphology. To this end, a eutectic GaInSn alloy (EGaInSn) was proposed and employed as an intermediate to fabricate low−dimensional ordered catalyst support materials. Owing to the lower Gibbs free energy of Ga2O3 compared to certain types of metals (e.g., Al, Mn, Ce, etc.), we found that a skinny layer of metal oxides could be formed and exfoliated into a two−dimensional nanosheet at the interface of liquid metal (LM) and water. As such, EGaInSn was herein employed as a reaction matrix to synthesize a range of two−dimensional catalyst supports with large specific surface areas and structural stability. As a proof−of-concept, Al2O3 and MnO were fabricated with the assistance of LM and were used as catalyst supports for loading Ru, demonstrating enhanced structural stability and overall electrocatalytic performance in the oxygen evolution reaction. This work opens an avenue for the development of functional support materials mediated by LM, which would play a substantial role in electrocatalytic reactions and beyond.

As the existing processing algorithms for LiDAR echo decomposition are time-consuming, this paper proposes an FPGA-based improved Gaussian full-waveform decomposition method. The proposed FPGA architecture consists of three modules: (i) a pre-processing module, which is used to pipeline data reading and Gaussian filtering, (ii) the inflection point coordinate solution module, applied to the second-order differential operation and to calculate inflection point coordinates, and (iii) the Gaussian component parameter solution and echo component positioning module, which is utilized to calculate the Gaussian component and echo time parameters. Finally, two LiDAR datasets, covering the Congo and Antarctic regions, are used to verify the accuracy and speed of the proposed method. The experimental results show that (i) the accuracy of the FPGA-based processing is equivalent to that of PC-based processing, and (ii) the processing speed of the FPGA-based processing is 292 times faster than that of PC-based processing.

Critical limb ischemia (CLI) is a severe complication of diabetes mellitus that occurs without effective therapy. Excessive reactive oxygen species (ROS) production and oxidative stress play critical roles in the development of diabetic cardiovascular complications. N-acetylcysteine (NAC) reduces ischemia-induced ROS production. The present study aimed to investigate the effect of NAC on the recovery of ischemic limb in an experimental model of type-2 diabetes. TALLYHO/JngJ diabetic and SWR/J non-diabetic mice were used for developing a CLI model. For NAC treatment, mice received NAC (1 mg/mL) in their drinking water for 24 h before initiating CLI, and continuously for the duration of the experiment. Blood flow, mechanical function, histology, expression of antioxidant enzymes including superoxide dismutase (SOD)-1, SOD-3, glutathione peroxidase (Gpx)-1, catalase, and phosphorylated insulin receptor substrate (IRS)-1, Akt, and eNOS in ischemic limb were evaluated in vivo or ex vivo. Body weight, blood glucose, plasma advanced glycation end-products (AGEs), plasma insulin, insulin resistance index, and plasma TNF-a were also evaluated during the experiment. NAC treatment effectively attenuated ROS production with preserved expressions of SOD-1, Gpx-1, catalase, phosphorylated Akt, and eNOS, and enhanced the recovery of blood flow and function of the diabetic ischemic limb. NAC treatment also significantly decreased the levels of phosphorylated IRS-1 (Ser307) expression and plasma TNF-α in diabetic mice without significant changes in blood glucose and AGEs levels. In conclusion, NAC treatment enhanced the recovery of blood flow and mechanical function in ischemic limbs in T2D mice in association with improved tissue redox/inflammatory status and insulin resistance.

In order to determine the average behavior time of widespread fatigue damage (WFD) in an aircraft multi-site damage (MSD) structure and complete the fatigue analysis of WFD sensitive parts, this paper adopts a probabilistic method to analyze the crack initiation and crack propagation of a single row of collinear seven-hole plates. The simulation analysis of the whole process from crack initiation to structural failure is realized. First, through statistical analysis of the test data of the LY12-CZ alloy single-detail plate with hole, the probability distribution of crack initiation life and growth rate is obtained, and this probability distribution is expressed by the randomization of variables. Then, using the related theories of fracture mechanics and fatigue statistics, the whole process of initiation, propagation, and connection of multiple cracks in the MSD structure to the occurrence of WFD was realized through the Monte Carlo method. Finally, a group of single-row seven-hole plate examples are used to verify the accuracy of the calculation results. The results show that the calculated results in this paper are in good agreement with the experimental data, and can accurately predict the life of MSD structures under a certain reliability.

Conservation tillage is an environmentally friendly and economical farming method, but its impact on rice yield is controversial. Artificially applied side deep fertilizing of machine-transplanted rice is when fertilizer is applied to the deep soil along with the machine transplantation of rice; this may improve the fertilizer utilization rate and rice yield and eliminate the possible negative effects of conservation tillage on rice yield. Using on machine-transplanted rice, this study aims to compare the effects of side deep fertilizing (SDF). We investigated the effects of artificially applying fertilizer (AAF) on rice growth and yield under conventional tillage (CT), reduced tillage (RT), and no tillage (NT). The rice root activity, root dry weight, leaf area index (LAI), net photosynthetic rate (Pn), chlorophyll content, panicle density, spikelets per panicle, and yield were all ranked as NT > RT > CT and SDF > AAF. The 1000-grain weight was also ranked as SDF > AAF. In addition, under NT conditions, the positive effect of SDF on rice growth and yield was higher than under RT and CT conditions. In general, conservation tillage combined with SDF saved costs and increased rice yield.

Kinesin family member C1 (KIFC1) is a minus-end-directed motor protein that is critically involved in microtubule crosslinking and spindle formation. KIFC1 is essential for supernumerary centrosomes, and it is associated with the initiation and progression of cancers. In the present study, we initially reviewed the The Cancer Genome Atlas database and observed that KIFC1 is abundantly expressed in most types of tumors. We then analyzed the gene alteration profiles, protein expressions, prognoses, and immune reactivities of KIFC1 in more than 10,000 samples from several well-established databases. In addition, we conducted a gene set enrichment analysis to investigate the potential mechanisms for the roles of KIFC1 in carcinogenesis. The pan-cancer analysis of KIFC1 demonstrates significant statistical correlations of the KIFC1 expression with the clinical prognoses, the oncogenic signature gene sets, the myeloid-derived suppressor cell infiltration, the ImmunoScore, the immune checkpoints, the microsatellite instabilities, and the tumor mutational burdens across multiple tumors. These data may provide important information on the understanding of the role and mechanisms of KIFC1 in carcinogenesis and immunotherapy, as well as on the clinical progression of a variety of cancers.

Commercial diesel consists of hundreds of hydrocarbons such as alkanes, cycloalkanes, and aromatics. The components of the fuel’s composition are what determine its physical and ignition properties, and their variations affect engine performance. In this study, n-heptane, n-dodecane, tetralin, and decalin were chosen as typical additives to blend with commercial diesel according to the China VI standard (Heavy Duty Diesel Vehicle Pollutant Emission Limits and Measurement Methods) in 20% and 50% volume fractions, respectively. The physical properties of the fuel blends, such as viscosity, density, cetane number (CN), and distillation range, were measured first. Then, the commercial diesel’s lower heat value was measured, and blended fuels were calculated accordingly. The CN of the blended fuel is tested by an Ignition Quality Tester (IQT), which is known as the derived cetane number (DCN). The results show that adding n-dodecane increases the value of DCN, while tetralin reduces the DCN, and n-heptane and decalin have negative effects. This study uses a type of WP12 diesel engine made by Weichai that meets China’s emission regulation 6. During the tests, the fuel injection strategy was kept as a pure diesel operation without any modifications. Compared with pure diesel operation, the bench test results show the following characteristics: the maximum torque output increased with increased decalin, followed by tetralin and n-dodecane, while n-heptane has a side effect compared to pure diesel operation. The addition of n-dodecane and n-heptane can reduce fuel consumption, while tetralin will increase it, and decalin has no obvious effect on fuel consumption. It was found that n-heptane increases HC and NOx emissions significantly. Furthermore, n-dodecane slightly increases CO, HC and NOx emissions. Decalin increases CO and HC emissions when mixed in a large proportion. In addition, tetralin causes a substantial increase in HC, CO and NOx emissions at medium and high loads.

A conversion method based on the inversion of Mel frequency cepstral coefficient (MFCC) features was proposed to convert whispered speech into normal speech. First, the MFCC features of whispered speech and normal speech were extracted and a matching relation between the MFCC feature parameters of whispered speech and normal speech was developed through the Gaussian mixture model (GMM). Then, the MFCC feature parameters of normal speech corresponding to whispered speech were obtained based on the GMM and, finally, whispered speech was converted into normal speech through the inversion of MFCC features. The experimental results showed that the cepstral distortion (CD) of the normal speech converted by the proposed method was 21% less than that of the normal speech converted by the linear predictive coefficient (LPC) features, the mean opinion score (MOS) was 3.56, and a satisfactory outcome in both intelligibility and sound quality was achieved.

Thermoelectrics can convert waste heat to electricity and vice versa. The energy conversion efficiency depends on materials figure of merit, zT, and Carnot efficiency. Due to the higher Carnot efficiency at a higher temperature gradient, high-temperature thermoelectrics are attractive for waste heat recycling. Among high-temperature thermoelectrics, silicon-based compounds are attractive due to the confluence of light weight, high abundance, and low cost. Adding to their attractiveness is the generally defect-tolerant nature of thermoelectrics. This makes them a suitable target application for recycled silicon waste from electronic (e-waste) and solar cell waste. In this review, we summarize the usage of high-temperature thermoelectric generators (TEGs) in applications such as commercial aviation and space voyages. Special emphasis is placed on silicon-based compounds, which include some recent works on recycled silicon and their thermoelectric properties. Besides materials design, device designing considerations to further maximize the energy conversion efficiencies are also discussed. The insights derived from this review can be used to guide sustainable recycling of e-waste into thermoelectrics for power harvesting.

As the key materials of aircraft engines, nickel-based superalloys have excellent comprehensive properties. Mircotensile experiments were carried out based on in situ digital image correlation (DIC) and in situ synchrotron radiation (SR) technique. The effects of the δ phase on the grain orientation, surface roughening, and strain localization were investigated. The results showed that the average kernel average misorientation (KAM) value of the fractured specimens increased significantly compared with that of the heat-treated specimens. The surface roughness decreased with an increasing volume fraction of the δ phase. The strain localization of specimens increased with the increasing ageing time. The size and volume fraction of voids gradually increased with the increase in plastic strain. Some small voids expanded into large voids with a complex morphology during micro-tensile deformation. The needle-like δ phase near the fracture broke into short rods, while the minor spherical δ phase did not break. The rod-like and needle-like δ phases provided channels for the propagation of the microcrack, and the accumulation of the microcrack eventually led to the fracture of specimens.

The performance of clad foils in microforming deserves to be studied extensively, where the strain rate sensitivity of the clad foil concerning the forming performance is a crucial factor. In this paper, the strain rate sensitivity of the mechanical properties of coarse-grained (CG) Cu/Ni clad foils in the quasi-static strain rate range (ε˙=10−4 s−1~10−1 s−1) is explored by uniaxial tensile tests under different strain rates. The results show that the strength and ductility increase with strain rate, and the strain rate sensitivity m value is in the range of 0.012~0.015, which is three times the value of m for CG pure Cu. The fracture morphology shows that slip bands with different directions are entangled in localized areas near the interface layer. Molecular dynamics simulations demonstrate the formation of many edged dislocations at the Cu/Ni clad foils interface due to a mismatch interface. The improved ductility and strain rate sensitivity is attributed to the interaction and plugging of the edged dislocations with high density in the interface layer. Additionally, the influence of size effect on mechanical properties is consistently present in the quasi-static strain rate range. This paper helps to understand the strain rate sensitivity of CG clad foils and to develop clad foils in microforming processes.

Previous studies have revealed that high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) ablation can trigger an antitumor immune response. The aim of this study was to investigate immune response in tumor-draining lymph nodes (TDLNs) after HIFU treatment. Forty-eight female patients with biopsy-confirmed breast cancer were divided into a control group and an HIFU group. In the control group, 25 patients underwent modified radical mastectomy, but 23 patients in the HIFU group received HIFU ablation of primary cancer, followed by the same operation. Using HE and immunohistochemical staining, the immunologic reactivity pattern and immune cell profile were assessed in paraffin-embedded axillary lymph nodes (ALNs) in all patients. The results showed that ALNs presented more evident immune reactions in the HIFU group than in the control group (100% vs. 64%). Among the ALNs, 78.3% had mixed cellular and humoral immune response, whereas 36% in the control group showed cellular immune response. The numbers of CD3+, CD4+, NK cell, and activated CTLs with Fas ligand+, granzyme+ and perforin+ expression were significantly higher in the ALNs in the HIFU group. It was concluded that HIFU could stimulate potent immune response and significantly increase T cell, activated CTLs and NK cell populations in the TDLNs of breast cancer.

This paper presents a detailed analysis and design guidelines for advanced nonoverlapping winding induction machines (AIMs) with coil-pitch of two slot-pitches by considering some vital empirical rules and flux-weakening characteristics. The aim of the study is to develop a type of new winding and stator topology for induction machines (IMs) that will lead to a decrease in total axial length without sacrificing torque, power, and efficiency. The key performance characteristics of the improved AIMs are investigated by 2D time-stepping finite element analysis (FEA) and compared with those of IMs having fractional and conventional overlapping and nonoverlapping windings. Compared with the conventional overlapping winding counterpart of the AIM, a ~25% shorter axial length without sacrificing torque, output power, and efficiency is achieved. In addition, the influences of major design parameters, such as stator slot, rotor slot and pole numbers, stack length, number of turns per phase, machine geometric parameters, etc., on the flux-weakening characteristics are investigated. It has been concluded that the major design parameters have a considerable effect on the electromagnetic performance. However, among those parameters, the influences of pole number and stack length together with the number of turns on flux-weakening characteristics are significant.

Intelligent geoprocessing relies heavily on formalized parameter constraints of geoprocessing tools to validate the input data and to further ensure the robustness and reliability of geoprocessing. However, existing methods developed to formalize parameter constraints are either designed based on ill-suited assumptions, which may not correctly identify the invalid parameter inputs situation, or are inefficient to use. This paper proposes a novel method to formalize the parameter constraints of geoprocessing tools, based on a high-level and standard constraint language (i.e., SHACL) and geoprocessing ontologies, under the guidance of a systematic classification of parameter constraints. An application case and a heuristic evaluation were conducted to demonstrate and evaluate the effectiveness and usability of the proposed method. The results show that the proposed method is not only comparatively easier and more efficient than existing methods but also covers more types of parameter constraints, for example, the application-context-matching constraints that have been ignored by existing methods.

To solve the challenge of welding aluminum alloys, a unified adjustment model for Gaussian pulse welding is established. This model can achieve improved welding performance by adjusting the base current of the weak pulse group within a specific range of average welding current inputs. The flat overlaying welding is carried out on the base material: 6061 aluminum alloys with thicknesses of 2 mm, 3 mm, and 5 mm. A stable welding process, indicated by reduced spatter, is produced, with a soft arc sound and good repeatability in the waveforms of the real-time current and voltage. The weld has a shiny surface and regular fish scale ripples. Metallographic analysis shows that the fusion line is clear, and there are no visible defects, while the weld zone has fine dendritic structures. The tensile test results indicate that fractures occur in the heat-affected zone, and that the tensile strength reaches about 68% of that of the base metal.

This paper presents three novel configurations of single-phase (SP) short-stroke (SS) tubular permanent magnet oscillating machines (TPMOMs) with partitioned stator (PS), termed PS-SPSS-TPMOMs. The machine structures are described and the influence of permanent magnet pole alignment with either stator slot or stator tooth is investigated. It is found that the PM poles should be aligned with the stator slots in order to ease the oscillation. The electromagnetic performance of these proposed machines is analyzed and compared. The results show that such machines have the advantages of low mover mass and low magnet eddy current loss, compared with a conventional surface-mounted SPSS-TPMOM.

Stator-slot circumferentially magnetized PM machines (SSCMPMMs) have high fault-tolerant capability. In this paper, the SSCMPMMs with full-pitched windings and different stator slot/rotor pole numbers are investigated, together with the influence of key geometric parameters. It shows that the 12 stator-slots 7 rotor-poles (12S7R) machine delivers the highest torque. It is then compared with the SSCMPMM with tooth-coil windings. The results show that when they have the same active length, the 12S7R machine delivers significantly higher torque and higher efficiency. Furthermore, when the machine length is over around 140 mm, the 12S7R machine is more advantageous in producing high torque and high efficiency. A prototype is manufactured and tested to validate the theoretical analyses.
