This paper reports on the design and experimental validation of a fully-metallic doubleridged waveguide 10 x 10 Rotman lens additively manufactured as a single part. The wide band operation of this quasi-optical beamformer enables us to cover the uplink and downlink frequencies allocated to satellite communications in the K/K-a-band, from 17.3GHz to 30 GHz. The feeding port design was adjusted to enable vertical printing, thus minimizing the use of supporting structures. A prototype was manufactured and tested. The reported results indicate losses in the range of 0.5 dB in the lower-frequency band and 0.8 dB in the upper-frequency band, including the waveguide transitions added for test purposes. The measured reflection and coupling coefficients remain below 11.5 dB over the operating band. The standard deviation of the residual phase error across the array ports is below 5 degrees in simulation and below 10 degrees in measurements. Array factors synthesized using the scattering parameters confirm the good stability of the beamforming functionality over the wide frequency band analyzed. This paper presents the design and fabrication of a mechanically reconfigurable filter at W band based on the concept of glide symmetry. The tunability is achieved by breaking and regen-erating the glide symmetry. The filters are made of two glide‐symmetric pieces that can be displaced in a certain direction, and therefore, break the symmetry. The high filtering capacity of these designs is demonstrated by simulation and measurement and can also be adjusted mechanically. The transmission level in the manufactured filter varies from a value between −1 and −2 dB when the filter is in the glide symmetry position to values close to −40 dB in the stop‐band when it is in the broken symmetry position. The transmission band obtained in the symmetrical mode is around 20%, but, after breaking the symmetry, it is split into two passbands of 6.5% and 11% separated by a stop-band of 6%. We propose a circular twist-symmetric dielectric waveguide that is polarization-selective.In the practical implementation of optical fibers, a selective circular polarization is more convenientthan its linearly polarized counterpart where previous knowledge of the emitted polarization fromthe transmitter is unknown. The analysis of the waveguide was conducted with three methods: aneigenmode approach, simulation of a truncated structure, and the so-called multimodal transfermatrix method (MMTMM). The presented simulations demonstrate that the operational band canbe manipulated by tuning the parameters of the structure. This work studies the propagation characteristics of a rectangular waveguide with aligned/misaligned double-sided dielectric-filled metallic corrugations. Two modes are found to propagate in the proposed double-sided configuration below the hollow-waveguide cutoff frequency: a quasi-resonant mode and a backward mode. This is in contrast to the single-sided configuration, which only allows for backward propagation. Moreover, the double-sided configuration can be of interest for waveguide miniaturization on account of the broader band of its backward mode. The width of the stopband between the quasi-resonant and backward modes can be controlled by the misalignment of the top and bottom corrugations, being null for the glide-symmetric case. The previous study is complemented with numerical results showing the impact of the height of the corrugations, as well as the filling dielectric permittivity, on the bandwidth and location of the appearing negative-effective-permeability band. The multi-modal transmission-matrix method has also been employed to estimate the rejection level and material losses in the structure and to determine which port modes are associated with the quasi-resonant and backward modes. Finally, it is shown that glide symmetry can advantageously be used to reduce the dispersion and broadens the operating band of the modes., QC 20211011

Lenses are used for multiple applications, including communications, surveillance and security, and medical instruments. In homogeneous lenses, the contour is used to control the electromagnetic propagation. Differently, graded-index lenses make use of inhomogeneous materials, which is an extra degree of freedom. This extra degree of freedom enables the design of devices with a high performance. For instance, rotationally symmetric lenses without spherical aberrations, e.g., the Luneburg lens, can be designed. However, the manufacturing of such lenses is more complex. One possible approach to implement these lenses is using metamaterials, which are able to produce equivalent refractive indices. Here, we propose a new type of three-dimensional metamaterial formed with two independent sets of wires. The double-mesh twin-wire structure permits the propagation of a first mode without cut-off frequency and with low dispersion and high isotropy. These properties are similar to periodic structures with higher symmetries, such as glide symmetry. The variations of the equivalent refractive index are achieved with the dimension of the meandered wires. A mode-matching formulation is presented and used to analyze the dispersion properties of twist-symmetric transmission lines. The structures are coaxial lines periodically loaded with infinitely thin screens, which are rotated with respect to each other to possess twist symmetry. The results obtained using the proposed formulation are in good agreement with those of commercial simulators. Furthermore, using the presented mode-matching formulation, it is demonstrated that the propagation characteristics in the twist-symmetric structures are linked to the scattering and coupling of the higher order modes. The physical insight offered by this analysis is valuable for the design of various electromagnetic devices, such as filters, antennas, and phase-shifters., QC 20201006
