A collection of 482 tetraploid wheat accessions from the CIMMYT Germplasm Bank was screened in the greenhouse for resistance to leaf rust disease caused by the fungus Puccinia triticina E. The accessions were screened against two races CBG/BP and BBG/BP in the field at two locations: against race CBG/BP at the Norman E. Borlaug Experimental Station (CENEB) located in the Yaqui Valley in the northern state of Sonora in Mexico during the 2014–2015 growing season; and against race BBG/BP at CIMMYT headquarters in El Batan, Texcoco, in the state of Mexico in the summer of 2015. Among the accessions, 79 durum genotypes were identified, of which 68 continued demonstrating their resistance in the field (past the seedling stage) against the two leaf rust races. An additional set of 41 genotypes was susceptible at the seedling stage, but adult plant race-specific resistance was identified in the field. The 79 seedling-resistant genotypes were tested against 15 different leaf rust races at the seedling stage to measure the usefulness of their resistance in a breeding program. Among the 79 accessions tested, 35 were resistant to all races used in the tests. Two sample sources, CIMMYT (18/35) pre-breeding germplasm and Ethiopian landraces (17/35), showed seedling resistance to all races tested except for seven landraces from Ethiopia, which became susceptible to the Cirno race identified in 2017.

Wheat occupies a special role in global food security since, in addition to providing 20% of our carbohydrates and protein, almost 25% of the global production is traded internationally. The importance of wheat for food security was recognised by the Chief Agricultural Scientists of the G20 group of countries when they endorsed the establishment of the Wheat Initiative in 2011. The Wheat Initiative was tasked with supporting the wheat research community by facilitating collaboration, information and resource sharing and helping to build the capacity to address challenges facing production in an increasingly variable environment. Many countries invest in wheat research. Innovations in wheat breeding and agronomy have delivered enormous gains over the past few decades, with the average global yield increasing from just over 1 tonne per hectare in the early 1960s to around 3.5 tonnes in the past decade. These gains are threatened by climate change, the rapidly rising financial and environmental costs of fertilizer, and pesticides, combined with declines in water availability for irrigation in many regions. The international wheat research community has worked to identify major opportunities to help ensure that global wheat production can meet demand. The outcomes of these discussions are presented in this paper.

Droughts and high temperatures are the main abiotic constraints hampering durum wheat production. This study investigated the accumulation of phenolic acids (PAs) in the wholemeal flour of six durum wheat cultivars under drought and heat stress. Phenolic acids were extracted from wholemeals and analysed through HPLC-DAD analysis. Ferulic acid was the most represented PA, varying from 390.1 to 785.6 µg/g dry matter across all cultivars and growth conditions, followed by sinapic acids, p-coumaric, vanillic, syringic, and p-hydroxybenzoic acids. Among the cultivars, Cirno had the highest PAs content, especially under severe drought conditions. Heat stress enhanced the accumulation of minor individual PAs, whereas severe drought increased ferulic acid and total PAs. Broad-sense heritability was low (0.23) for p-coumaric acid but ≥0.69 for all other components. Positive correlations occurred between PA content and grain morphology and between test weight and grain yield. Durum wheat genotypes with good yields and high accumulation of PAs across different growing conditions could be significant for durum wheat resilience and health-promoting value.

Twelve new azole compounds were synthesized through an ene reaction involving methylidene heterocycles and phenylmaleimide, producing four oxazoles, five thiazoles, and one pyridine derivative, and ethyl glyoxylate for an oxazole and a thiazole compound. The twelve azoles have a stereogenic center in their structure. Hence, a method to separate the enantiomeric pairs, must be provided if any further study of chemical and pharmacological importance of these compounds is to be accomplished. Six chiral stationary phases were assayed: four were based on macrocyclic glycopeptide selectors and two on linear carbohydrates, i.e., derivatized maltodextrin and amylose. The enantiomers of the entire set of new chiral azole compounds were separated using three different mobile phase elution modes: normal phase, polar organic, and reversed phase. The most effective chiral stationary phase was the MaltoShell column, which was able to separate ten of the twelve compounds in one elution mode or another. Structural similarities in the newly synthesized oxazoles provided some insights into possible chiral recognition mechanisms.

Developing cultivars with improved adaptation to drought and heat stressed environments is a priority for plant breeders. Canopy temperature (CT) is a useful tool for phenotypic selection of tolerant genotypes, as it integrates many physiological responses into a single low-cost measurement. The objective of this study was to determine the ability of CT to predict grain yield within the flow of a wheat breeding program and assess its utility as a tool for indirect selection. CT was measured in both heat and drought stressed field experiments in northwest Mexico on 18 breeding trials totaling 504 spring wheat lines from the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT) Irrigated Bread Wheat program. In the heat treatment, CT was significantly correlated with yield (r = −0.26) across all trials, with a maximum coefficient of determination within the individual trials of R2 = 0.36. In the drought treatment, a significant correlation across all trials was only observed when days to heading or plant height was used as a covariate. However, the coefficient of determination within individual trials had a maximum of R2 = 0.54, indicating that genetic background may impact the ability of CT to predict yield. Overall a negative slope in the heat treatment indicated that a cooler canopy provided a yield benefit under stress, and implementing selection strategies for CT may have potential for breeding tolerant genotypes.

The review begins by providing an in-depth analysis of the chemical intricacies of polyphenols, shedding light on their structural diversity and the implications of such diversity on their biological activities. Subsequently, an exploration of the dietary origins of polyphenols elucidates the natural plant-based sources that contribute to their global availability. The discussion extends to the bioavailability and metabolism of polyphenols within the human body, unraveling the complex journey from ingestion to systemic effects. A central focus of the review is dedicated to unravelling the antioxidant effects of polyphenols, highlighting their role in combating oxidative stress and associated health conditions. The comprehensive analysis encompasses their impact on diverse health concerns such as hypertension, allergies, aging, and chronic diseases like heart stroke and diabetes. Insights into the global beneficial effects of polyphenols further underscore their potential as preventive and therapeutic agents. This review article critically examines the multifaceted aspects of dietary polyphenols, encompassing their chemistry, dietary origins, bioavailability/metabolism dynamics, and profound antioxidant effects. The synthesis of information presented herein aims to provide a valuable resource for researchers, clinicians, and health enthusiasts, fostering a deeper understanding of the intricate relationship between polyphenols and human health.

Weeds are the most severe and widespread biological constraint on agricultural production systems and cause damage to cropped and non-cropped lands. They reduce crop yield and degrade the quality of the produce, besides raising the cost of production. The intensification of agriculture in the Green Revolution era attracted chemical fertilizers and dwarf varieties coupled with mono-cropping and irrigation practices, which enhanced crop-associated weeds and the widespread use of herbicides for easy control. Pesticides may kill many organisms, both target and non-target species, in the environment, causing an imbalance in the ecosystem. Despite the significant increase in productivity, the environmental repercussions of industrial agriculture, characterized by the use of high-yielding crop varieties and the extensive application of chemical fertilizers and pesticides, have prompted a quest for more sustainable agricultural practices worldwide. One potential alternative lies in innovative approaches that draw upon ecological insights gleaned from studying natural ecosystems. These approaches aim to create “ecologically intensive” agro-ecosystems. Developing ecologically intensive agro-ecosystems necessitates a deep understanding of the biological dynamics within ecosystems and the integration of traditional agricultural knowledge held by local farmers. Considering the potentiality of appropriate weed management technologies to substantially improve crop productivity, there is an opportunity for the development, popularization, and adoption of effective, economical, and eco-friendly weed management technologies.

Understanding the genetic basis of rust resistance in elite CIMMYT wheat germplasm enhances breeding and deployment of durable resistance globally. “Mokue#1”, released in 2023 in Pakistan as TARNAB Gandum-1, has exhibited high levels of resistance to stripe rust, leaf rust, and stem rust pathotypes present at multiple environments in Mexico and Kenya at different times. To determine the genetic basis of resistance, a F5 recombinant inbred line (RIL) mapping population consisting of 261 lines was developed and phenotyped for multiple years at field sites in Mexico and Kenya under the conditions of artificially created rust epidemics. DArTSeq genotyping was performed, and a linkage map was constructed using 7892 informative polymorphic markers. Composite interval mapping identified three significant and consistent loci contributed by Mokue: QLrYr.cim-1BL and QLrYr.cim-2AS on chromosome 1BL and 2AS, respectively associated with stripe rust and leaf rust resistance, and QLrSr.cim-2DS on chromosome 2DS for leaf rust and stem rust resistance. The QTL on 1BL was confirmed to be the Lr46/Yr29 locus, whereas the QTL on 2AS represented the Yr17/Lr37 region on the 2NS/2AS translocation. The QTL on 2DS was a unique locus conferring leaf rust resistance in Mexico and stem rust resistance in Kenya. In addition to these pleiotropic loci, four minor QTLs were also identified on chromosomes 2DL and 6BS associated with stripe rust, and 3AL and 6AS for stem rust, respectively, using the Kenya disease severity data. Significant decreases in disease severities were also demonstrated due to additive effects of QTLs when present in combinations.

This paper presents structural, detailed magnetic, and exchange bias studies in polycrystalline Ba2ScRuO6 synthesized at ambient pressure. In contrast to its strontium analogue, this material crystallizes in a 6L hexagonal structure with space group P3¯m1. The Rietveld refinement using the room-temperature powder XRD pattern suggests a Ru-Sc disorder in the structure. The temperature variation of the DC electrical resistivity highlights a semiconducting behavior with the electron conduction corresponding to Mott’s 3D variable range hopping (VRH) model. The detailed magnetization measurements show that Ba2ScRuO6 develops antiferromagnetic ordering at TN≈ 9 K. Interestingly, below 9 K (TN), the field-cooled magnetic field variation (FC) of the magnetization curves highlights an exchange bias effect in the sample. The exchange bias field reaches a maximum value of 1.24 kOe at 2 K. The exchange bias effect below the magnetic ordering temperature can be attributed to the inhomogeneous magnetic correlations due to the disorder in the structure. Remarkably, the appearance of a large exchange bias field in Ba2ScRuO6 indicates that inhomogeneous hexagonal double perovskites are a promising class to explore new materials having potential applications in spintronics.

Incremental sheet forming (ISF) requires no or partial dies for sheet metal fabrication and is widely used for small batch production. In this process, necking is either suppressed or delayed due to the localized nature of tool–sheet contact; hence, more strains than conventional stamping and deep drawing are obtained. In the present study, two variations of ISF, namely cold ISF (CISF) and warm ISF (WISF), are compared. First, FEA modeling is carried out on ABAQUS to reach the forming forces involved in the process. It is found that WISF reduces the forming forces. The temperature for WISF is maintained at 180 °C. Following the simulation analysis, tests are carried out. The forming force in WISF is 55.77% less than that in CISF. The part fabricated by CISF is slightly more substantial than that by WISF; however, more forming depth can be achieved by WISF. There is a more uniform thickness distribution in the case of CISF than in WISF. However, the surface quality of the CISF product is inferior to that of WISF. It is observed that there is reduced forming force, increased formability, and better strain distribution in WISF compared to CISF. However, post-processing heat treatment and surface polishing of the formed parts is required to restore their mechanical properties.

Bacterial blight (BB) is a devastating disease of rice in the tropics of Indian sub-continent, where the presence of Xoo races with varying levels of genetic diversity and virulence renders disease management extremely challenging. In this context, marker-assisted improvement of plant resistance has been proven as one of the most promising approaches for the development of sustainable rice cultivars. The present study demonstrates the marker-assisted introgression of the three BB resistant genes (Xa21 + xa13 + xa5) into the background of HUR 917, a popular aromatic short grain (ASG) rice cultivar in India. The performance of the resulting improved products (near isogenic lines (NILs), HR 23-5-37-83-5, HR 23-5-37-121-10, HR 23-5-37-121-14, HR 23-65-6-191-13, HR 23-65-6-237-2, HR 23-65-6-258-10 and HR 23-65-6-258-21) establishes the utility of marker-assisted selection (MAS) approach for accelerated trait introgression in rice. The MAS-bred lines carrying three introgressed genes showed broad spectrum BB resistance (lesion length, LL of 1.06 ± 1.35 cm to 4.61 ± 0.87 cm). Besides, these improved lines showed the complete product profile of recurrent parent HUR 917 along with the enhanced level of durable BB resistance. The improved introgression lines with durable BB resistance would contribute to sustainable rice production in India, particularly in the Indo-Gangetic plane that has substantial acreage under HUR 917.

Conservation Agriculture (CA) is promoted by research and development (R&D) agencies to sustainably intensify agricultural systems with the goals of improving food security and livelihoods and adapting food systems to global climate change. Despite the many benefits of CA, there are few farmers around the world that have simultaneously implemented all facets of the strategy. In part, this reflects the challenges in applying, adapting, and understanding this complex and multi-dimensional agricultural innovation in the context of diverse farming systems. In this paper, we applied an integrated framework that combines bioeconomic simulation, risk analysis, adoption theory, and impact assessment to investigate how various combinations of CA components (no-tillage, soil cover, crop diversification, plus growing a new crop or variety) performed over a 10-year period in representative farms in a central Mexican case study. We found significant differences in profit, net value, downside risk, and risk-aversion cost between double-component scenarios (and improved CA to a lesser extent) and all other scenarios, which suggested that disaggregating CA into smaller component packages could increase farmer adoption in risky contexts. Our findings provided valuable insights on CA feasibility and could help establish policy and reporting metrics. The study highlighted the need for employing a range of research tools to understand the relative value of agricultural innovations and to identify and reduce trade-offs and uncertainty in farming systems.

Aggregated Norton’s equivalent models, with parallel impedance and current injection at different harmonic frequencies are used to model the distribution grid in harmonic studies. These models are derived based on measurements and/or prior knowledge about the grid. The measurement-based distribution (sub-)grid impedance estimation method uses harmonic phasors of 3-phase current and voltage measurements to capture the response of the distribution (sub-)grid before and after an event in the utility side of the grid. However, due to increasing non-linear components in the grid, knowledge about uncertainty in parameters of such equivalent models which intrinsically describe a linear grid becomes important. The aim of this paper is to present two novel methods to calculate the uncertainty of the measurement-based Norton’s equivalent harmonic model of the distribution (sub-)grids as seen from the utility side at the Point of Common Coupling (PCC). The impedance and the uncertainty calculations are demonstrated on a simulated network.

Weed management is one of the main challenges of conservation agriculture. Although all three components of conservation agriculture (minimal tillage, permanent soil cover and crop diversification) can reduce weed populations, these effects may only become apparent in the medium to long term. This study evaluated weed biomass, density and diversity with and without herbicide control in a long-term trial initiated in 1991 in the Mexican Highlands to evaluate all three components of conservation agriculture. Data were collected in 2004, 2005, 2013, 2014 and 2015. Weed density and biomass were generally lower in conservation agriculture than with conventional tillage. The three components of conservation agriculture significantly reduced weed biomass, which was lower when all three components were applied together. When herbicides were applied, weed biomass in conservation agriculture was 91% lower in maize and 81% lower in wheat than in conventional tillage. Different treatments favored different weed species, but no trend toward increased perennial weeds was observed in conservation agriculture. These data supported claims stating that if adequate weed control is achieved in the initial years, weed populations in conservation agriculture systems are lower than in conventional tillage systems.

This paper focuses on studying the phenomenon of harmonic distortion propagation through distribution networks. This phenomenon is governed by a combination of factors involving the nature of harmonic loads and their dynamic interaction, the influence of background voltage distortion, and harmonic impedance values. The objective of the proposed research includes evaluation of the network response at different nodes to harmonic current injections via utilizing a time-synchronized distributed measurement system. The study is performed in a fully controlled and flexible test network with three medium voltage/low voltage (MV/LV) distribution substations and several managed LV harmonic sources, namely PV inverter, single-phase EV charger and emulated harmonic load with reference current injections. A selection of the results is analyzed and interpretation of the observed phenomena is given with implications that synchronized harmonic measurements can be considered as potential powerful instruments for analyzing power quality disturbances.

Surface roughness is used to quantitatively evaluate the surface topography of the workpiece subjected to mechanical processing. The optimal machining parameters are critical to getting designed surface roughness. The effects of cutting speed, feed rate, and depth of cut on the areal surface roughness of AZ31B Mg alloys were investigated via experiments combined with regression analysis. An orthogonal design was adopted to process the dry turning experiment of the front end face of the AZ31B bar. The areal surface roughness Sa and Sz of the end face were measured with an interferometer and analyzed through direct analysis and variance analysis (ANOVA). Then, an empirical model was established to predict the value of Sa through multiple regression analysis. Finally, a verification experiment was carried out to confirm the optimal combination of parameters for the minimum Sa and Sz, as well as the availability of the regression model for predicting Sa. The results show that both Sa and Sz of the machined end face reduce with the decrease in feed rate. The minimum of Sa and Sz reaches to 0.577 and 5.480 µm, respectively, with the cutting speed of 85 m/min, the feed rate of 0.05 mm/rev, and a depth of cut of 0.3 mm. The feed rate, depth of cut, and cutting speed contribute the greatest, the second and the smallest to Sa, respectively. The linear regression model can predict Sa of AZ31B machined with dry face turning, since the cutting speed, feed rate and depth of cut can explain 97.5% of the variation of Sa.

Tan spot (TS) and Septoria nodorum blotch (SNB) induced by Pyrenophora tritici-repentis and Parastagonospora nodorum, respectively, cause significant yield losses and adversely affect grain quality. The objectives of this study were to decipher the genetics and map the resistance to TS and SNB in the PBW343/Kenya Nyangumi (KN) population comprising 204 F6 recombinant inbred lines (RILs). Disease screening was performed at the seedling stage under greenhouse conditions. TS was induced by P. tritici-repentis isolate MexPtr1 while SNB by P. nodorum isolate MexSN1. Segregation pattern of the RILs indicated that resistance to TS and SNB in this population was quantitative. Diversity Array Technology (DArTs) and simple sequence repeats (SSRs) markers were used to identify the quantitative trait loci (QTL) for the diseases using inclusive composite interval mapping (ICIM). Seven significant additive QTLs for TS resistance explaining 2.98 to 23.32% of the phenotypic variation were identified on chromosomes 1A, 1B, 5B, 7B and 7D. For SNB, five QTLs were found on chromosomes 1A, 5A, and 5B, explaining 5.24 to 20.87% of the phenotypic variation. The TS QTL on 1B chromosome coincided with the pleiotropic adult plant resistance (APR) gene Lr46/Yr29/Pm39. This is the first report of the APR gene Lr46/Yr29/Pm39 contributing to TS resistance.

Spot blotch (SB) is an important fungal disease of wheat in South Asia and South America. Host resistance is regarded as an economical and environmentally friendly approach of controlling SB, and the inheritance of resistance is mostly quantitative. In order to gain a better understanding on the SB resistance mechanism in CIMMYT germplasm, two bi-parental mapping populations were generated, both comprising 232 F2:7 progenies. Elite CIMMYT breeding lines, BARTAI and WUYA, were used as resistant parents, whereas CIANO T79 was used as susceptible parent in both populations. The two populations were evaluated for field SB resistance at CIMMYT’s Agua Fria station for three consecutive years, from the 2012⁻2013 to 2014⁻2015 cropping seasons. Phenological traits like plant height (PH) and days to heading (DH) were also determined. Genotyping was performed using the DArTSeq genotyping-by-sequencing (GBS) platform, and a few D-genome specific SNPs and those for phenological traits were integrated for analysis. The most prominent quantitative trait locus (QTL) in both populations was found on chromosome 5AL at the Vrn-A1 locus, explaining phenotypic variations of 7⁻27%. Minor QTL were found on chromosomes 1B, 3A, 3B, 4B, 4D, 5B and 6D in BARTAI and on chromosomes 1B, 2A, 2D and 4B in WUYA, whereas minor QTL contributed by CIANO T79 were identified on chromosome 1B, 1D, 3A, 4B and 7A. In summary, resistance to SB in the two mapping populations was controlled by multiple minor QTL, with strong influence from Vrn-A1.
