To maintain the stability of the power system, frequency fluctuations must be reduced in the shortest possible timeframe. Load frequency control (LFC) plays a critical role in achieving this objective by regulating the system frequency and the desired demand or output power in an interconnected network, thereby enabling the system to adapt the load disturbances. In order to effectively mitigate the frequency fluctuation caused by load variation in a single-area power system, a new control strategy integrating a linear quadratic regulator (LQR), a proportional controller, and a damping compensator is proposed in this paper. The proposed controller is named as the LQR-based proportional damping compensator which mitigates the frequency fluctuation of a single-area power system. MATLAB/Simulink simulation is conducted on a single-area power system to demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed control technique. The simulation results demonstrate that the proposed method successfully reduces frequency variations, maintains system frequency within reasonable limits, and substantially reduces the settling time as compared to other existing control techniques. Apart from the simulation analysis, to experimentally validate the performance of the proposed controller, a hybrid multiprocessor-based processor-in-loop (PIL) technique is also introduced in the paper. Both the simulation and experimental results prove the promising performance of the proposed controller for mitigating the frequency fluctuation of a single-area power system.

Photovoltaic (PV) energy systems have found diverse applications in fulfilling the increasing energy demand worldwide. Transformer-less PV inverters convert the DC energy from PV systems to AC energy and deliver it to the grid through a non-isolated connection. This paper proposes a new transformer-less grid-connected PV inverter. A closed-loop control scheme is presented for the proposed transformer-less inverter to connect it with the power grid. The proposed transformer-less inverter reduces extra leakage current and holds the common-mode voltage at a constant point. To eliminate extra leakage current, as well as achieve constant common-mode voltage, a midpoint clamping method is utilized to operate the inverter. The proposed transformer-less inverter is formed of seven insulated gate bipolar transistors (IGBTs) employing a unipolar sinusoidal pulse width modulation (SPWM) technique for switching purposes. An LCL filter is employed to reshape the two-level inverter output voltage and current to obtain closer sinusoidal waveforms. The output voltage and current total harmonic distortion (THD) of the proposed transformer-less inverter were found to be 1.25% and 0.94%, respectively, in the grid-connected mode. The leakage current elimination mechanism with the proposed transformer-less inverter is deeply analyzed in this paper. The performances of the proposed transformer-less inverter were evaluated with MATLAB/Simulink simulation and validated in a laboratory scale experiment.

Due to global warming and shortage of fossil fuels, the grid-connected solar photovoltaic (PV) system has gained significant popularity all over the world. The modular multilevel cascaded (MMC) inverter is the natural choice for step-up transformer and line filter less direct medium voltage grid integration of solar PV systems. However, power quality and loss are the important issues while connecting the PV system to the medium voltage grid through MMC inverter. Modulation technique is the key to maintain output power quality, e.g., total harmonic distortion (THD) and to ensure low switching and conduction losses. In this paper, an advanced modulation technique named “triangle saturated common mode pulse width modulation (TSCMPWM)” control is proposed for a 3-phase 5-level MMC inverter-based grid-tied PV system. Compared to traditional modulation techniques, the proposed TSCMPWM control offers the lowest voltage THD as well as lower inverter power losses. Performance of the proposed modulation technique is evaluated in MATLAB/Simulink environment and tested with a reduced scale prototype test platform. Both simulation and experimental results show the effectiveness of the proposed modulation technique.
