Swarm Intelligence (SI) represents a paradigm shift in artificial intelligence, leveraging the collective behavior of decentralized, self-organized systems to solve complex problems. This study provides a comprehensive review of SI, focusing on its application to multi-robot systems. We explore foundational concepts, diverse SI algorithms, and their practical implementations by synthesizing insights from various reputable sources. The review highlights how principles derived from natural swarms, such as those of ants, bees, and birds, can be harnessed to enhance the efficiency, robustness, and scalability of multi-robot systems. We explore key advancements, ongoing challenges, and potential future directions. Through this extensive examination, we aim to provide a foundational understanding and a detailed taxonomy of SI research, paving the way for further innovation and development in theoretical and applied contexts.

Sustainable tourism has emerged as a critical concern in contemporary society due to its potential to mitigate negative environmental and socio-cultural impacts associated with traditional tourism practices. In this context, recommendation systems (RS) are crucial in shaping travelers’ choices toward sustainable options. This research article proposes an innovative approach to RS tailored for sustainable tourism, termed Sustainability and Cultural Awareness-based Recommendation Algorithm (OurSCARA). OurSCARA integrates awareness of environmental and socio-cultural factors (sustainability attributes) into the recommendation process to facilitate informed decision-making by travelers. The system leverages data analytics techniques, including sentiment analysis, user profiling, and collaborative filtering (CF), to personalize recommendations based on users’ preferences, sustainability preferences, and contextual factors. Furthermore, OurSCARA incorporates real-time data sources such as weather conditions, local events, and community initiatives to enhance the relevance and timeliness of recommendations. A prototype implementation of OurSCARA is presented, along with a comprehensive evaluation framework to assess its effectiveness in promoting sustainable tourism behaviors. Through empirical evaluation using datasets collected from TripAdivsor, we demonstrate the potential of OurSCARA to influence traveler behavior towards more sustainable choices while enhancing their overall tourism experience. The findings underscore the significance of integrating sustainability considerations into RS and pave the way for future research and development in this emerging area at the intersection of computer science and sustainable tourism.

Infant electrocardiograms (ECGs) and heart rates (HRs) are very useful biosignals for psychological research and clinical work, but can be hard to analyse properly, particularly longform (≥5 min) recordings taken in naturalistic environments. Infant HRs are typically much faster than adult HRs, and so some of the underlying frequency assumptions made about adult ECGs may not hold for infants. However, the bulk of publicly available ECG approaches focus on adult data. Here, existing open source ECG approaches are tested on infant datasets. The best-performing open source method is then modified to maximise its performance on infant data (e.g., including a 15 Hz high-pass filter, adding local peak correction). The HR signal is then subsequently analysed, developing an approach for cleaning data with separate sets of parameters for the analysis of cleaner and noisier HRs. A Signal Quality Index (SQI) for HR is also developed, providing insights into where a signal is recoverable and where it is not, allowing for more confidence in the analysis performed on naturalistic recordings. The tools developed and reported in this paper provide a base for the future analysis of infant ECGs and related biophysical characteristics. Of particular importance, the proposed solutions outlined here can be efficiently applied to real-world, large datasets.

(1) Background: The RoXstaTM system has been developed as a rapid, effective means of profiling different types of antioxidant activity. The purpose of this study was to examine its performance utilizing a diverse array of biological fluids including semen, blood plasma, serum, urine, saliva, follicular fluid and plant extracts. (2) Methods: The RoXstaTM system was used to assess the ability of different fluids to suppress free radical formation as well as scavenge a variety of toxic oxygen metabolites including free radicals and both hydrogen and organic peroxides. (3) Results: Human semen was shown to have significantly (p < 0.001) more peroxide scavenging power than any other fluid tested (10–14 mM vitamin C equivalent compared with 1–2 mM for blood serum or plasma), while urine was particularly effective in scavenging free radicals and preventing free radical formation (p < 0.001). The powerful antioxidant properties of human semen were shown to reside within the seminal plasma (SP) fraction, rather than the spermatozoa, and to be resistant to snap freezing in liquid nitrogen. Moreover, comparative studies demonstrated that human SP exhibited significantly (p < 0.001) higher levels of antioxidant potential than any other species examined (stallion, bull, dog) and that this intense activity reflected the relative vulnerability of human spermatozoa to peroxide attack. (4) Conclusions: The RoXstaTM system provides valuable information on the antioxidant profile of complex biological fluids, supporting its diagnostic role in conditions associated with oxidative stress. Based on the results secured in this study, human semen is identified as a particularly rich source of antioxidants capable of scavenging both hydrogen and organic peroxides, in keeping with the high susceptibility of human spermatozoa to peroxide-mediated damage.

A beta-ray attenuation monitor (BAM) is preferred as a reference instrument for monitoring particulate matter in the air due to its accuracy. However, BAM cannot be used in large numbers for spatial distribution monitoring because of its high investment cost. Thus, a mid-cost optical particle counter (OPC) is an alternative solution for widespread use. However, its long-term performance with respect to various monitoring environments should be taken into account. In this study, six mid-cost OPCs were used to measure PM2.5 concentrations at an underground subway station and compared with a reference BAM over 15 months. OPCs were placed in the waiting space and platforms to compare PM2.5 concentrations and determine PM2.5/PM10 ratios. The reference BAM was installed on the platform. Error analysis revealed a significant discrepancy, with normalized errors exceeding 30%, between the 1-h average PM2.5 concentrations recorded by the BAM and OPCs at the same location. In contrast, the 24-h average PM2.5 concentrations measured by the BAM and OPCs at the same location showed similar patterns, with stronger correlations (r2 = 0.80–0.93) compared to the 1-h averages (r2 = 0.63–0.83). The normalized errors for the 24-h averages ranged from 13.9% to 21.2%, depending on seasonal variations. These findings suggest that OPCs can effectively monitor 24-h average PM2.5 concentrations in an underground subway station over a year without additional calibration, making them a cost-effective option. In addition, 1-h average PM2.5 concentrations varied across different sampling spaces and were influenced by PM2.5/PM10 ratios. Hence, when measuring the 1-h average mass concentration of PM2.5, it is essential to consider PM characteristics and seasons.

The zero drift, interference, and sensitivity of an HCl analyzer based on a non-dispersive infrared (NDIR) technique can be improved to develop a cost-effective solution for continuous emission monitoring systems (CEMSs). To achieve these improvements, the same bandpass filter technique, negligible interference bandpass filter, and optimal path length are applied to the analyzer. Laboratory inspections and long-term field trials are conducted to evaluate the performance of the analyzer. A metalworking factory and a cement factory are selected for field trials. In laboratory inspections, the relative error of the analyzer is less than 1%, aligning closely with the results obtained from standard ion chromatography methods. Moreover, the basic specifications of the proposed analyzer are comparable to those of commercial HCl analyzers. In field trials, the NDIR analyzer shows a significant bias compared to the standard method. However, when considering the difference between HCl emission levels and HCl emission standards, the relative errors are less than 10%. These results suggest the proposed NDIR analyzer is a practical option for the CEMS of metalworking and cement factories. However, seasonal variations should be considered when the temperatures of gas emissions are low.

This paper introduces a novel methodology for evaluating communication performance in rotating electric machines using Received Signal Strength Indication (RSSI) measurements coupled with artificial intelligence. The proposed approach focuses on assessing the quality of wireless signals in the complex, dynamic environment inside these machines, where factors like reflections, metallic surfaces, and rotational movements can significantly impact communication. RSSI is used as a key parameter to monitor real-time signal behavior, enabling a detailed analysis of communication reliability. The methodology comprises several stages, including data collection, preprocessing, feature extraction, and model training. Various machine learning models are implemented and evaluated. Among these, the SVM model with a Radial Basis Function (RBF) kernel outperforms others, achieving an accuracy of 97%, with high precision and recall scores, confirming its robustness in classifying RSSI data and handling complex signal behavior. The confusion matrix further supports the SVM model’s accuracy, showing minimal misclassification.

This study explores the improvement of building integrated photovoltaic–thermal (BIPV/T) systems and their integration with air source heat pumps (ASHPs). The BIPV/T collector needs a method to effectively extract the heat it collects, while ASHP can boost their efficiency utilizing preheated air from the BIPV/T collectors. Combining these two systems presents a valuable opportunity to enhance their performance. This paper discusses technological improvements and integration through a comprehensive modelling analysis. Two versions of the BIPV/T systems were assessed using a modified version of EnergyPlus V8.0, a building energy simulation program. This study involved sensitivity analysis of the internal channel surface and cover emissivity parameters of the opaque BIPV/T (OBIPV/T), transparent BIPV/T (TBIPV/T), and building-integrated solar air heater collectors (BISAHs). Various arrangements of the collectors were also studied. A BIPV/T-BISAH array design was selected based on the analysis, and its integration with a net-zero energy house. The BIPV/T-BISAH coupled ASHP system decreased space heating electricity consumption by 6.5% for a net-zero house. These modest savings are mainly attributed to the passive design of the houses, which reduced heating loads during sunny hours/days.

Leaf senescence, the final stage of leaf development, is crucial for plant fitness as it enhances nutrient reutilization, supporting reproductive success and overall plant adaptation. Understanding its molecular and genetic regulation is essential to improve crop resilience and productivity, particularly in the face of global climate change. This review explores the significant contributions of natural genetic diversity to our understanding of leaf senescence, focusing on insights from model plants and major crops. We discuss the physiological and adaptive significance of senescence in plant development, environmental adaptation, and agricultural productivity. The review emphasizes the importance of natural genetic variation, including studies on natural accessions, landraces, cultivars, and artificial recombinant lines to unravel the genetic basis of senescence. Various approaches, from quantitative trait loci mapping to genome-wide association analysis and in planta functional analysis, have advanced our knowledge of senescence regulation. Current studies focusing on key regulatory genes and pathways underlying natural senescence, identified from natural or recombinant accession and cultivar populations, are highlighted. We also address the adaptive implications of abiotic and biotic stress factors triggering senescence and the genetic mechanisms underlying these responses. Finally, we discuss the challenges in translating these genetic insights into crop improvement. We propose future research directions, such as expanding studies on under-researched crops, investigating multiple stress combinations, and utilizing advanced technologies, including multiomics and gene editing, to harness natural genetic diversity for crop resilience.

Claudin-4 is a key component of tight junctions, which play an important role in the formation of the epidermal barrier by forming a circumferential network in the granular layer that serves as a gatekeeper of the paracellular pathway. The aim of this study is to illustrate claudin-4 immunohistochemical staining patterns of different blistering disorders. We collected 35 cases, including two Hailey–Hailey disease, one Darier disease, three Grover disease, one acantholytic acanthoma, two warty dyskeratoma, 11 pemphigus vulgaris (PV) including six mucosal PV, and two pemphigus foliaceus. For comparison, we included five cases of normal skin, five eczema, and three bullous pemphigoid cases. Claudin-4 demonstrated weak-to-moderate expression in keratinocytes located in the stratum granulosum, keratinocytes surrounding hair follicles, and adnexal glands. Further, claudin-4 exhibited moderate-to-strong membranous staining in disrupted keratinocytes surrounding and within the acantholytic and bullous areas in 16/22 of the acantholytic cases (not seen in the six cases of mucosal PV) and all three bullous pemphigoids. This finding suggests that claudin-4 is upregulated in these conditions, which may be a compensatory response to the disrupted barrier function. This finding could shed light on the molecular mechanisms underlying disrupted barrier function in blistering disorders, independent of the specific underlying disease mechanism.

A new autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) has high maneuverability near the bottom and a direction turnaround ability, called the autonomous underwater helicopter (AUH). This paper numerically investigates the hydrodynamic performance of the AUH. A Reynolds-Averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS) equation, a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) technique, is applied to analyze the AUH’s behavior. Investigations of the AUH’s hydrodynamic characteristics become more obvious with a service speed in the range of 0.4–1.2 m/s. For the same velocity condition, the resistance of the AUH increases, and the irregular eddy at the rear of the AUH expands with changes in the angles of attack and the length/height ratio. Essential design characteristics including pressure, velocity distribution, and velocity streamlines are shown and analyzed. These insights can be used as a guideline to reduce drag force and optimize the AUH profile for future designs. It has great potential for improving the AUH’s control algorithms.

The Module-0 Demonstrator is a single-phase 600 kg liquid argon time projection chamber operated as a prototype for the DUNE liquid argon near detector. Based on the ArgonCube design concept, Module-0 features a novel 80k-channel pixelated charge readout and advanced high-coverage photon detection system. In this paper, we present an analysis of an eight-day data set consisting of 25 million cosmic ray events collected in the spring of 2021. We use this sample to demonstrate the imaging performance of the charge and light readout systems as well as the signal correlations between the two. We also report argon purity and detector uniformity measurements and provide comparisons to detector simulations.

Underground telecommunication cables are highly susceptible to damage from excavation activities. Preventing accidental damage to underground telecommunication cables is critical and necessary. In this study, we present field trial results of monitoring excavation activities near underground fiber cables using an intensity-based phase-sensitive optical time-domain reflectometer (φ-OTDR). The reasons for choosing intensity-based φ-OTDR for excavation monitoring are presented and analyzed. The vibration signals generated by four typical individual excavation events, i.e., cutting, hammering, digging, and tamping at five different field trial sites, as well as five different mixed events in the fifth field trial site were investigated. The findings indicate that various types of events can generate vibration signals with different features. Typically, fundamental peak frequencies of cutting, hammering and tamping events ranged from 30 to 40 Hz, 11 to 15 Hz, and 30 to 40 Hz, respectively. Digging events, on the other hand, presented a broadband frequency spectrum without a distinct peak frequency. Moreover, due to differences in environmental conditions, even identical excavation events conducted with the same machine may also generate vibration signals with different characteristics. The diverse field trial results presented offer valuable insights for both research and the practical implementation of excavation monitoring techniques for underground cables.

Acculturative stress can be a big problem for international students. Among the adaptation difficulties they may face, adjusting to new foods in a new environment is crucial to their well-being. Existing studies related to dietary acculturation point to gender differences, mostly on objective health impacts. Using the information processing approach, this study aims to examine the subjective perception of dietary acculturation difficulties, with a focus on the influence of social connectedness. Using the Bayesian inference approach with the Hamiltonian Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) technique on a sample of 268 students from a Japanese international university, we found that female students are more likely to have perceived difficulties in the process of adjusting to new foods, but social connectedness lessens this effect. We also found no significant differences between domestic and international students regarding perceived difficulties of food adjustment in this study site, likely due to its highly multicultural environment. We suggest international universities provide better information about the food situations on campuses, especially for female students, and organize more cultural exchange events and food-related social activities to help students overcome barriers of food stress.

Exploration can help students access a wider range of information and make connections among values within the natural and social world. This study investigated the relationship between students’ previous exploration of their surroundings and their acceptance of collectivist values in the context of China. A sample of 343 college students was analyzed based on the Bayesian Mindsponge Framework to explore this relationship. The results revealed a positive association between students’ prior exploration of surroundings and their degree of collectivist orientation. Furthermore, parental education attainment was found to negatively moderate this association, albeit with a small effect size. These findings contribute to the understanding of how information acquisition influences students’ acceptance of collectivist values and highlight the potential role of the family infosphere in shaping this relationship.

This study aimed to enhance the data write performance in measurements with exceptionally high sampling rates, such as acoustic emission measurements. This is particularly crucial when employing conventional hard disk drives to store data. This study introduced algorithms for handling binary formats, thereby reducing the data file size, increasing write rates, and ultimately shortening data write times during measurements. The suggested approaches included utilizing specialized binary formats and implementing self-created buffers. These approaches resulted in a remarkable write time reduction of up to 40×. Furthermore, employing multiple drives for writing significantly enhanced performance compared with that of using a single drive. Therefore, the proposed algorithms offer promising results for managing large amounts of data in real time.

The metallic components of an electric machine exert a notable impact on the electromagnetic transmission between an external recipient and an internal shaft sensor. The RTMS (rotor temperature monitoring system) is aimed at boosting power transfer in the machine, regardless of the considerable impact of its components. This research assesses the influence of the components of an electric machine on shaft sensor transmission and specifically addresses the packaging needs of the receiver antenna. The study includes a comparative analysis of two antennas. HFSS (high frequency structure simulator) simulation was utilized to identify the antenna with a superior propagation factor. The principal contribution of this paper is the assessment of how the electrical machine body affects the transmission and propagation of rotor sensor signals, establishing a connection between these effects and the packaging criteria for the receiver antenna. Moreover, the paper presents an antenna design that capitalizes on the electrical machine body to enhance the power transmission effectiveness. The final section of this paper encompasses the experimental results obtained from the implementation of the RN171 antenna on the electrical machine, provides valuable insights into the propagation characteristics, and contributes to a comprehensive understanding of the electromagnetic dynamics within the system.

Construction materials are at the forefront of global economic development as they provide the foundation for the infrastructure of other industries, with cementitious materials being predominantly used in construction projects. To promote sustainable development, alternative materials are added to cement mortar to increase durability and reduce emissions. In this regard, graphene oxide (GO) and fly ash (FA) are two alternative materials commonly used in cement mortar, which are readily available or are just the waste from other local material production. With different ratios, the amount of GO and FA can affect the properties of cement mortar positively or negatively. This study aims to determine the effects of GO and FA on cement mortar mixtures under material conditions. Research results show that 10 wt% FA and 0.036 wt% GO will give cement mortar the best physical and mechanical properties while ensuring other necessary properties, such as workability. When increasing FA to 30 wt% or GO to 0.05 wt%, the strength of the mortar mixture tends to decrease. Another issue is that the specific surface area of graphene is very high, which poses a significant challenge when uniform dispersion in the cement paste mixture is required. Polycarboxylate combined with a specific mixing sequence has demonstrated good dispersibility and high stability. Through this research, it is demonstrated that the addition of GO and FA has the potential for sustainable development of the construction industry by considering the contexts of the local recycled cementitious replacement materials.

The Illawarra plum (IP) is native to Australia and has been used as a bush food for centuries. With rich phytochemicals and natural pigments, IP has the potential to be an added ingredient to improve the physicochemical properties of food, including yoghurt. This study prepared dried IP powders through vacuum drying (VD) and freeze drying (FD), produced extracts from these dried powders, and fortified them into Greek-style set yoghurt. The changes in colour, pH, titratable acidity (TA), syneresis, total soluble solids (TS), and phytochemicals were measured throughout a chilled storage period of 28 days. The results showed that FD and FD extract could provide a stable, distinct pink colour to yoghurt. IP powders and their extracts improved TS content and, thus, the consistency of yoghurt. Compared to the control, VD, FD, and FD extract of IP did not significantly affect the level of acidity or syneresis after 28 days of chilled storage. Yoghurt fortified with FD and FD extract had the greatest level of phenolics, anthocyanins, and radical scavenging antioxidant activities. This study revealed that IP powders and their extracts can positively improve the physicochemical properties of Greek-style set yoghurt. FD powder is recommended over its extract to fortify this yoghurt, as it can be cost-effectively prepared by freeze drying and then grinding the fresh fruit into powder. Future studies are needed to evaluate other variables in yoghurt preparation, including the concentration of IP and strains of yoghurt culture. Further, the consumer perception of sensory quality and acceptability of yoghurt fortified with FD IP powder should be investigated.

Swine acute diarrhoea syndrome coronavirus (SADS-CoV; Coronaviridae, Rhinacovirus) was detected in 2017 in Guangdong Province (China), where it caused high mortality rates in piglets. According to previous studies, SADS-CoV evolved from horseshoe bat reservoirs. Here, we report the first five Rhinacovirus genomes sequenced in horseshoe bats from Vietnam and their comparisons with data published in China. Our phylogenetic analyses provided evidence for four groups: rhinacoviruses from Rhinolphus pusillus bats, including one from Vietnam; bat rhinacoviruses from Hainan; bat rhinacoviruses from Yunnan showing a divergent synonymous nucleotide composition; and SADS-CoV and related bat viruses, including four rhinacoviruses from Vietnam sampled in Rhinolophus affinis and Rhinolophus thomasi. Our phylogeographic analyses showed that bat rhinacoviruses from Dien Bien (Vietnam) share more affinities with those from Yunnan (China) and that the ancestor of SADS-CoVs arose in Rhinolophus affinis circulating in Guangdong. We detected sequencing errors and artificial chimeric genomes in published data. The two SADS-CoV genomes previously identified as recombinant could also be problematic. The reliable data currently available, therefore, suggests that all SADS-CoV strains originate from a single bat source and that the virus has been spreading in pig farms in several provinces of China for at least seven years since the first outbreak in August 2016.

The dynamic shifts in shorelines due to erosion and deposition have become a significant challenge in coastal zone management, particularly in the context of climate change and rising sea levels. This paper evaluates the shoreline protection and efficiency of various wave-reducing breakwaters in the Vietnamese Mekong Delta. The delta exemplifies the coastal erosion issue faced by deltas worldwide. Landsat satellite images were used to establish a coastal development map for the period 2000 to 2022. The wave data in front and behind the breakwaters were analyzed to assess the wave reduction efficiency of various breakwater structures. Our results reveal that coastal erosion is deeply concerning, with almost 40% of the coastline experiencing severe erosion. Hotspot areas have been observed to reach annual erosion rates of nearly 95 m per year. The majority of provinces have adopted protective measures, with 68% of affected shorelines protected to some degree. Our results show breakwaters to be highly effective in reducing wave height, with a 62% reduction in waves reaching the shore. The process of creating offset has taken place in the area from the breakwater back to the mainland, with the rate of increase in compensation also quite fast at up to 3.1 cm/month. The stability of the pile–rock is very high; however, it is necessary to add rock to compensate for the settlement of the rock part.

Senescent cells, which accumulate with age, exhibit a pro-inflammatory senescence-associated secretory phenotype (SASP) that includes the secretion of cytokines, lipids, and extracellular vesicles (EVs). Here, we established an in vitro model of senescence induced by Raf-1 oncogene in RAW 264.7 murine macrophages (MΦ) and compared them to senescent MΦ found in mouse lung tumors or primary macrophages treated with hydrogen peroxide. The transcriptomic analysis of senescent MΦ revealed an important inflammatory signature regulated by NFkB. We observed an increased secretion of EVs in senescent MΦ, and these EVs presented an enrichment for ribosomal proteins, major vault protein, pro-inflammatory miRNAs, including miR-21a, miR-155, and miR-132, and several mRNAs. The secretion of senescent MΦ allowed senescent murine embryonic fibroblasts to restart cell proliferation. This antisenescence function of the macrophage secretome may explain their pro-tumorigenic activity and suggest that senolytic treatment to eliminate senescent MΦ could potentially prevent these deleterious effects.

Enhancing the operational efficacy of electrical discharge machining (EDM) is crucial for achieving optimal results in various engineering materials. This study introduces an innovative solution—the use of coated electrodes—representing a significant advancement over current limitations. The choice of coating material is critical for micro-EDM performance, necessitating a thorough investigation of its impact. This research explores the application of different coating materials (AlCrN, TiN, and Carbon) on WC electrodes in micro-EDM processes specifically designed for Ti-6Al-4V. A comprehensive assessment was conducted, focusing on key quality indicators such as depth of cut (Z), tool wear rate (TWR), overcut (OVC), and post-machining surface quality. Through rigorous experimental methods, the study demonstrates substantial improvements in these quality parameters with coated electrodes. The results show significant enhancements, including increased Z, reduced TWR and OVC, and improved surface quality. This evidence underscores the effectiveness of coated electrodes in enhancing micro-EDM performance, marking a notable advancement in the precision and quality of Ti–6Al–4V machining processes. Among the evaluated coatings, AlCrN-coated electrodes exhibited the greatest increase in Z, the most significant reduction in TWR, and the best OVC performance compared to other coatings and the uncoated counterpart.

Penicillium digitatum and Penicillium italicum are responsible for citrus green and blue moulds (GM and BM), respectively, which are major citrus postharvest diseases. The aim of this study was to develop an optimal dipping mixture of an aqueous solution of different food additives: sodium bicarbonate (SB), sodium benzoate (SBen), and potassium sorbate (PS), in combination with heat, to control GM and BM using response surface methodology. The ranges of SB (0.0%, 3.0%, 6.0%), SBen (0.0%, 0.5%, 1.0%), PS (0.0%, 0.5%, 1.0%) and temperature (20 °C, 35 °C, 50 °C) with a dipping time of 60s were tested for their impact on GM and BM on artificially inoculated oranges. Within these tested ranges, SB reduced GM severity and incidences of both GM and BM. PS affected BM severity and incidence, but not GM. SBen and temperature did not have impact on GM and BM. The most suitable food additive concentrations were identified to be 4.7% SB, 1.0% SBen and 0.7% PS, with a dipping solution temperature of 50 °C. This treatment was shown to reduce GM and BM incidence from 85 and 86% on control fruit dipped in tap water at 20 °C to 3 and 10%, respectively. Algae and bacteria have co-occurred and coevolved in common habitats for hundreds of millions of years, fostering specific associations and interactions such as mutualism or antagonism. These interactions are shaped through exchanges of primary and secondary metabolites provided by one of the partners. Metabolites, such as N-sources or vitamins, can be beneficial to the partner and they may be assimilated through chemotaxis towards the partner producing these metabolites. Other metabolites, especially many natural products synthesized by bacteria, can act as toxins and damage or kill the partner. For instance, the green microalga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii establishes a mutualistic partnership with a Methylobacterium, in stark contrast to its antagonistic relationship with the toxin producing Pseudomonas protegens. In other cases, as with a coccolithophore haptophyte alga and a Phaeobacter bacterium, the same alga and bacterium can even be subject to both processes, depending on the secreted bacterial and algal metabolites. Some bacteria also influence algal morphology by producing specific metabolites and micronutrients, as is observed in some macroalgae. This review focuses on algal-bacterial interactions with micro- and macroalgal models from marine, freshwater, and terrestrial environments and summarizes the advances in the field. It also highlights the effects of temperature on these interactions as it is presently known.

(1) Background: In Vietnam, H. pylori bacteria has a resistance rate of 63% to the antibiotic clarithromycin. The initial therapy of H. pylori eradication with a standard three-drug regimen has low efficacy. Objective: Assess the efficacy of H. pylori eradication therapy which uses a four-drug regimen of rabeprazole–bismuth–tetracycline–tinidazole in patients with duodenal ulcers. (2) Methods: We performed gastrointestinal endoscopy on patients with a diagnosis of duodenal ulcers, gastric mucosa biopsy for a rapid urease test, and histopathology to diagnose H. pylori bacteria before and after treatment. Treatment for eradication of H. pylori bacteria using a rabeprazole–bismuth–tetracycline–tinidazole regimen was prescribed for 14 days. (3) Results: The rate of successful H. pylori eradication treatment according to per protocol (PP) and intention to treat (ITT) was 91.3% (95%CI: 84.8–96.7) and 82.4% (95%CI: 74.5–89.2) respectively. The success rate of H. pylori eradication therapy in males was 96.0% (95%CI: 92–100), higher than in females, which was 70.6% (95%CI: 47.1–88.2), p < 0.01. (4) Conclusions: Treatment of H. pylori with rabeprazole–bismuth–tetracycline–tinidazole regimen is highly effective. Men had higher H. pylori eradication results than women.

Information on the relationship between rainfall intensity, duration and accumulation frequency or return period (IDF) is commonly utilized in the design and management of urban drainage systems. Can Tho City, located in the Vietnamese Mekong Delta, is a city which has recently invested heavily in upgrading its stormwater drainage systems in the hope of preventing reoccurring flood events. Yet, much of these works were designed based on obsolete and outdated IDF rainfall curves. This paper presents an updated IDF curve for design rainfall for Can Tho City. For each duration and designated return period, a cumulative distribution function (CDF) was developed using the Pearson III, Log-Pearson III, and Log-Normal distribution functions. In order to choose the best IDF rainfall curve for Can Tho City, the CDF rainfall curve and empirical formulas used in Vietnam and Asia (Vietnamese standard 7957:2008, Department of Hydrology, Ministry of Transportation, Talbot, Kimijima, and Bermard) were compared. The goodness of fit between the IDF relationship generated by the frequency analysis (CDF curve), and that predicted by the IDF empirical formulas was assessed using the efficiency index (EI), and the root mean squared error (RMSE). The IDF built from Vietnam’s standard TCVN 7957:2008 with new parameters (A = 9594, C = 0.5, b = 26, n = 0.96) showed the best performance, with the highest values of EI (0.84 ≤EI≤ 0.93) and the lowest values of RMSE (2.5 ≤RMSE≤ 3.2), when compared to the other remnants.

In the temperate climate of South Korea, specific corn varieties are cultivated using plug trays. The cultivation process is initiated from February to March within greenhouse facilities, maintaining a temperature below 10 degrees Celsius. Following this, in April, seedlings are transplanted to enable an exceptionally early harvest for increased profitability. However, the subsequent elevation in indoor temperatures leads to seedling overgrowth. This study explores the effectiveness of three plant growth regulators—paclobutrazol, prohexadione-calcium, and diniconazole–on super sweet corn seedlings. Significantly, the application of prohexadione-calcium at 2 ppm during the first leaf stage substantially reduces seedling height and impedes the growth of both the first and second internodes. This impact extends to leaf-related traits, manifesting reductions in the area, length, and width of the third leaf. Furthermore, prohexadione-calcium induces a significant decrease in both fresh and dried shoot weight, while simultaneously augmenting root weight. This alteration results in a noteworthy shift in the root–shoot ratio, particularly at 2 ppm. Subsequent experiments have identified the optimal concentration of prohexadione-calcium at 15 ppm, effectively mitigating overgrowth in both hybrid and inbred corn varieties. These findings provide essential insights for practitioners seeking to efficiently manage corn seedling overgrowth. The study contributes to understanding the retardant effect of prohexadione-calcium on various morphological traits, offering practical applications for optimizing plant growth regulator concentrations in corn cultivation strategies.

This study examines the changing rainfall patterns in the Vietnamese Mekong Delta (VMD) utilizing observational data spanning from 1978 to 2022. We employ the Mann–Kendall test, the sequential Mann–Kendall test, and innovative trend analysis to investigate trends in annual, wet, and dry season rainfall, as well as daily rainfall events. Our results show significant spatial variations. Ca Mau, a coastal province, consistently showed higher mean annual and seasonal rainfall compared to the further inland stations of Can Tho and Moc Hoa. Interestingly, Ca Mau experienced a notable decrease in annual rainfall. Conversely, Can Tho, showed an overall decrease in some months of the wet season and an increase in dry season rainfall. Furthermore, Moc Hoa showed an increase in the number of rainy days, especially during the dry season. Principal component analysis (PCA) further revealed strong correlations between annual rainfall and extreme weather events, particularly for Ca Mau, emphasizing the complex interplay of geographic and climatic factors within the region. Our findings offer insights for policymakers and planners, thus aiding the development of targeted interventions to manage water resources and prepare for changing climate conditions.

The coastal environment is vulnerable to natural hazards and human-induced stressors. The assessment and management of coastal risks have become a challenging task, due to many environmental and socio-economic risk factors together with the complex interactions that might arise through natural and human-induced pressures. This work evaluates the combined effect of climate-related stressors on low-lying coastal areas by applying a multi-risk scenario analysis through a Bayesian Network (BN) approach for the Venice coast. Based on the available open-source and remote sensing data for detecting shoreline changes, the developed BN model was trained and validated with oceanographic variables for the 2015–2019 timeframe, allowing us to understand the dynamics of local-scale shoreline erosion and related water quality parameters. Three “what-if” scenarios were carried out to analyze the relationships between oceanographic boundary conditions, shoreline evolution, and water quality parameters. The results demonstrate that changes in sea surface height and significant wave height may significantly increase the probability of high-erosion and high-accretion states. Moreover, by altering the wave direction, the water quality variables show significant changes in the higher-risk class. The outcome of this study allowed us to identify current and future coastal risk scenarios, supporting local authorities in developing adaptation plans.

This hypothesis-generating study characterized the mRNA expression profiles and prognostic impacts of antigen-presenting cell (APC) markers (CD14, CD163, CD86, and ITGAX/CD11c) in pediatric brainstem diffuse midline glioma (pbDMG) tumors. We also assessed the mRNA levels of two therapeutic targets, transforming growth factor beta 2 (TGFB2) and interferon gamma receptor 2 (IFNGR2), for their biomarker potentials in these highly aggressive pbDMG tumors. The expressions of CD14, CD163, and ITGAX/CD11c mRNAs exhibited significant decreases of 1.64-fold (p = 0.037), 1.75-fold (p = 0.019), and 3.33-fold (p < 0.0001), respectively, in pbDMG tumors relative to those in normal brainstem/pons samples. The pbDMG samples with high levels of TGFB2 in combination with low levels of APC markers, reflecting the cold immune state of pbDMG tumors, exhibited significantly worse overall survival outcomes at low expression levels of CD14, CD163, and CD86. The expression levels of IFNGR2 and TGFB2 (1.51-fold increase (p = 0.002) and 1.58-fold increase (p = 5.5 × 10−4), respectively) were significantly upregulated in pbDMG tumors compared with normal brainstem/pons samples. We performed multivariate Cox proportional hazards modelling that showed TGFB2 was a prognostic indicator (HR for patients in the TGFB2high group of pbDMG patients = 2.88 (1.12–7.39); p = 0.028) for poor overall survival (OS) and was independent of IFNGR2 levels, the age of the patient, and the significant interaction effect observed between IFNGR2 and TGFB2 (p = 0.015). Worse survival outcomes in pbDMG patients when comparing high versus low TGFB2 levels in the context of low IFNGR2 levels suggest that the abrogation of the TGFB2 mRNA expression in the immunologically cold tumor microenvironment can be used to treat pbDMG patients. Furthermore, pbDMG patients with low levels of JAK1 or STAT1 mRNA expression in combination with high levels of TGFB2 also exhibited poor OS outcomes, suggesting that the inclusion of (interferon-gamma) IFN-γ to stimulate and activate JAK1 and STAT1 in anti-tumor APC cells present the brainstem TME can enhance the effect of the TGFB2 blockade.

Micro-electrical discharge machining (micro-EDM) stands out as a transformative methodology, offering substantial progress in both technical and economic efficiency through the integration of coated electrodes. This study meticulously analyzes various technological parameters in micro-EDM, focusing specifically on Ti-6Al-4V, a widely employed titanium alloy. The application of a titanium nitride (TiN) coating material on a tungsten carbide (WC) electrode is investigated using the Taguchi method of experimental design. This study employs an ANOVA and factorial design methodology to scrutinize the influence of key parameters, namely voltage (V), capacitance (C), and spindle rotation (in revolutions per minute) (RPM) on the tool wear rate (TWR), overcut (OVC), and Z coordinate (depth) within the micro-EDM process. The findings unveil a noteworthy increase in the TWR with an elevated V, C, and RPM, with capacitance exerting a pronounced influence while voltage exhibits the least impact. OVC exhibits notable variations, revealing an inverse relationship with RPM. The Z coordinate (depth) is significantly affected by capacitance, with voltage and RPM each having a relatively negligible impact. A surface quality analysis exposes similarities and numerous defects in both coated and uncoated electrodes, emphasizing the need for further exploration into the effectiveness of coated electrodes in enhancing post-micro-EDM machined surface layers. This study contributes valuable insights to optimize and advance micro-EDM processes, laying groundwork for future innovations in precision machining.

Under the effects of saltwater intrusion from rising sea water levels, climate change, and socioeconomic issues, the Nga Nam district in Vietnam has suffered damage to its agriculture and changes in agricultural land use. This study aimed to investigate the factors that influenced land use changes and to propose approaches to limit the changes in agricultural land use. The damage caused by saltwater intrusion on agricultural production was evaluated via the use of secondary data collected from the Department of Infrastructure Economics of the Nga Nam district in the period of 2010–2021. The results show that during the 2010–2015 period, agricultural production areas were affected in 2010, 2012, and 2015. In the period of 2015–2021, the trend of saltwater intrusion along the damaged area remarkably decreased due to the work of saltwater-preventing structures. In this period, the area of annual plants increased, while that of fruit trees decreased. In the area comprising annual plants, the area using the triple rice land use type converted into an area using the double rice and double rice–fish ones. Lands for fruit trees transitioned from mixed farming to specialized farming to raise the economic efficiency for farmers. These changes were affected by four main factors: the physical factor, the economy, society, and the environment. The environmental and economic factors were seen to play the most important role as drivers of changes in land use. The factors of saltwater intrusion and acid-sulfate-contaminated soil, consumer markets, floods, drought, profit, and investments were noted to be significant drivers in agricultural land use change. Thus, both structural and non-structural approaches are suggested to inhibit the safeguard changes in the future.

Lactic acid bacteria (LAB), a probiotic, provide various health benefits. We recently isolated a new Lactobacillus paracasei strain with strong anti-inflammatory effects under lipopolysaccharide-induced conditions and proposed a new mode of action—augmenting the endoplasmic reticulum stress pathway for anti-inflammatory functions in host cells. The beneficial effects of the L. paracasei strains on the skin have been described; however, the effects of L. paracasei-derived extracellular vesicles (LpEVs) on the skin are poorly understood. Herein, we investigated whether LpEVs can improve inflammation-mediated skin phenotypes by determining their effects on primary human skin cells and a three-dimensional (3D) full-thickness human skin equivalent under tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α-challenged inflammatory conditions. LpEVs were efficiently taken up by the human skin cells and were much less cytotoxic to host cells than bacterial lysates. Furthermore, low LpEV concentrations efficiently restored TNF-α-induced cellular phenotypes, resulting in increased cell proliferation and collagen synthesis, but decreased inflammatory factor levels (matrix metalloproteinase 1, interleukin 6, and interleukin 8) in the human dermal fibroblasts, which was comparable to that of retinoic acid, a representative antiaging compound. The beneficial effects of LpEVs were validated in a 3D full-thickness human skin equivalent model. LpEV treatment remarkably restored the TNF-α-induced epidermal malformation, abnormal proliferation of keratinocytes in the basal layer, and reduction in dermal collagen synthesis. Additionally, LpEVs penetrated and reached the deepest dermal layer within 24 h when overlaid on top of a 3D full-thickness human skin equivalent. Furthermore, they possessed superior antioxidant capacity compared with the human cell-derived EVs. Taken together, the anti-inflammatory probiotic LpEVs can be attractive antiaging and antioxidant substances for improving inflammation-induced skin phenotypes and disorders.

Recent advances in wearable systems have made inertial sensors, such as accelerometers and gyroscopes, compact, lightweight, multimodal, low-cost, and highly accurate. Wearable inertial sensor-based multimodal human activity recognition (HAR) methods utilize the rich sensing data from embedded multimodal sensors to infer human activities. However, existing HAR approaches either rely on domain knowledge or fail to address the time-frequency dependencies of multimodal sensor signals. In this paper, we propose a novel method called deep wavelet convolutional neural networks (DWCNN) designed to learn features from the time-frequency domain and improve accuracy for multimodal HAR. DWCNN introduces a framework that combines continuous wavelet transforms (CWT) with enhanced deep convolutional neural networks (DCNN) to capture the dependencies of sensing signals in the time-frequency domain, thereby enhancing the feature representation ability for multiple wearable inertial sensor-based HAR tasks. Within the CWT, we further propose an algorithm to estimate the wavelet scale parameter. This helps enhance the performance of CWT when computing the time-frequency representation of the input signals. The output of the CWT then serves as input for the proposed DCNN, which consists of residual blocks for extracting features from different modalities and attention blocks for fusing these features of multimodal signals. We conducted extensive experiments on five benchmark HAR datasets: WISDM, UCI-HAR, Heterogeneous, PAMAP2, and UniMiB SHAR. The experimental results demonstrate the superior performance of the proposed model over existing competitors.

Dendrobium officinale Kimura et Migo is a kind of herb with high medicinal, ornamental, and commercial value, and is rich in polysaccharides. Polyploid breeding is an important breeding method for the genome doubling of medicinal species to increase biomass and polysaccharide production. Previous studies have revealed comparative transcriptome analysis and polysaccharide biosynthesis across the growth stages and plant parts, but there have been no studies dissecting such genes and pathways in tetraploid D. officinale. Therefore, this study aimed to unravel the molecular mechanisms of the increase in polysaccharide content in tetraploid D. officinale via the generation of four transcriptomic libraries for protocorm-like bodies and six-month-old seedlings of both diploid and tetraploid D. officinale plants. In this study, a total of 230,786,618 clean reads remained with a total of 34.62 Gb nucleotides generated; 274,403 unigenes were assembled, of which 73.99% were annotated to at least one of the protein databases; and of 17,451 unigenes, 6.35% were annotated to all seven protein databases (NR, NT, KO, Swiss-Prot, FAM, GO, and KOG). Putative genes encoding enzymes related to polysaccharide biosynthetic pathways were determined. RT-qPCR for 11 randomly selected genes involved in polysaccharides indicated consistency with RNA-Seq data and polysaccharide content. The expressions of nine genes were higher in tetraploid than in diploid plants, while the expressions of the other two genes encoding bifunctional enzymes were the opposite. This study has provided a foundation for subsequent works regarding the biosynthetic pathways of metabolites involved in the autoploidy of Dendrobium species in general, and D. officinale in particular.

Air pollution is a considerable environmental stressor for urban residents in developing countries. Perceived health risks of air pollution might induce migration intention among inhabitants. The current study employed the Bayesian Mindsponge Framework (BMF) to investigate the rationale behind the domestic and international migration intentions among 475 inhabitants in Hanoi, Vietnam—one of the most polluted capital cities worldwide. We found that people perceiving more negative impacts of air pollution in their daily life are more likely to have migration intentions. The effect of perceived air pollution impact on international migration intention is stronger than that of domestic migration. Acknowledging a family member’s air pollution-induced sickness moderated the association between perceived air pollution impact and domestic migration intention, while the personal experience of air pollution-induced sickness did not. In contrast, the moderation effect of personal experience of sickness became significant in the international migration circumstance, but the effect of information about a family member’s sickness was negligible. The findings suggest that urban inhabitants’ consideration of air pollution-averting strategies reflects some characteristics of Homo Oeconomicus. Although an individual’s socioeconomic decision may seem insignificant on a collective scale, through environmental stressors as catalysts, such decisions might result in considerable social tendencies (e.g., internal migration and emigration).

Background: This cross-sectional study explored variation of the prevalence of perceived stress, depression and anxiety among different self-identified gender identity groups in the Canadian population during the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: Anxiety, depression, and stress were assessed using the Generalized Anxiety Disorder 7-item (GAD-7) scale, Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9), and Perceived Stress Scale (PSS) respectively. Data were analyzed using one-way analysis of variance. Results: There were 8267 respondents to the online survey; 982 (12.0%) were male-identified, 7120 (86.9%) female-identified, and 92 (1.1%) identified as a diverse gender group. Prevalence rates for clinically meaningful anxiety (333 (41.7%), 2882 (47.6%), 47 (61.0%)), depression (330 (40.2%), 2736 (44.3%), 46 (59.7%)), and stress (702 (79.6%), 5711 (86.4%), 74 (90.2%)) were highest among respondents who self-identified as “other gender” followed by female-identified and then male-identified, respectively. There were statistically significant differences between gender groups for mean scores on GAD-7 (F (2, 6929) = 18.02, p < 0.001), PHQ-9 (F (2, 191.4) = 11.17, p < 0.001), and PSS (F (2, 204.6) = 21.13, p < 0.001). Conclusions: Gender identity differences exist in terms of the prevalence and severity of anxiety, depressive, and stress symptoms during the COVID-19 pandemic. This finding highlights the importance of incorporating self-identified gender identity in medical research, clinical practice, and policy.

The need for reliable wireless communication in remote areas has led to the adoption of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) as flying base stations (FlyBSs). FlyBSs hover over a designated area to ensure continuous communication coverage for mobile users on the ground. Moreover, rate-splitting multiple access (RSMA) has emerged as a promising interference management scheme in multi-user communication systems. In this paper, we investigate an RSMA-enhanced FlyBS downlink communication system and formulate an optimization problem to maximize the sum-rate of users, taking into account the three-dimensional FlyBS trajectory and RSMA parameters. To address this continuous non-convex optimization problem, we propose a TD3-RFBS optimization framework based on the twin-delayed deep deterministic policy gradient (TD3). This framework overcomes the limitations associated with the overestimation issue encountered in the deep deterministic policy gradient (DDPG), a well-known deep reinforcement learning method. Our simulation results demonstrate that TD3-RFBS outperforms existing solutions for FlyBS downlink communication systems, indicating its potential as a solution for future wireless networks.

Day–night locomotor activities are the most readily observed outputs of the circadian (~24-h period) clock in many animals. Temporal patterns of the light–dark schedule serve as input to the clock. While circadian activity patterns under various lighting conditions have been observed and documented, the full extent of circadian locomotor activities by genotype and entrainment remains uncharacterized. To facilitate large-scale, parallel cataloging of circadian input–output patterns, we created the LocoBox, an easy-to-construct and easy-to-operate system that can control environmental light with flexible entrainment scenarios combined with the T-cycle and measure locomotor activities in individual home cages. The LocoBox is made using economical, common components, and normal breeding cages can be used for long-term recording. We provide details of the components and blueprints, along with software programs for Arduino and a Python-based graphical user interface (GUI), so that the system can be easily replicated in other laboratories.

The effectiveness of lemon myrtle (LM) (Backhousia citriodora) essential oil (EO) was investigated to combat Penicillium digitatum by in vitro agar diffusion and vapour assay and in artificially infected oranges. The main constituent of LM EO was revealed as citral when analysed in gas chromatography–mass spectrometry. Pure citral was also included in the experiment for comparison. The in vitro fungal growth was significantly inhibited by LM EO at 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 μL per disc while complete growth inhibition by both the pure citral and LM EO occurred at 4 and 5 μL per disc. Inoculated fruits treated by dipping in 1000 μL L−1 LM EO solutions for 5, 10, 15, 30 and 120 s showed significantly lower fungal wounds compared to control. While longer dipping times led to some rind injuries, fruits with a 5 and 10 s dip were found free from any injury. The evaluation after dipping and storage confirmed that the fruits maintained the sensory attributes and were not compromised by the incorporation of the essential oil. The results of this study indicate that LM EO can be a promising alternative to synthetic fungicides for preserving the quality of citrus fruits during storage.

Soybean seed sugars are among the most abundant beneficial compounds for human and animal consumption in soybean seeds. Higher seed sugars such as sucrose are desirable as they contribute to taste and flavor in soy-based food. Therefore, the objectives of this study were to use the ‘Forrest’ by ‘Williams 82’ (F × W82) recombinant inbred line (RIL) soybean population (n = 309) to identify quantitative trait loci (QTLs) and candidate genes that control seed sugar (sucrose, stachyose, and raffinose) contents in two environments (North Carolina and Illinois) over two years (2018 and 2020). A total of 26 QTLs that control seed sugar contents were identified and mapped on 16 soybean chromosomes (chrs.). Interestingly, five QTL regions were identified in both locations, Illinois and North Carolina, in this study on chrs. 2, 5, 13, 17, and 20. Amongst 57 candidate genes identified in this study, 16 were located within 10 Megabase (MB) of the identified QTLs. Amongst them, a cluster of four genes involved in the sugars’ pathway was collocated within 6 MB of two QTLs that were detected in this study on chr. 17. Further functional validation of the identified genes could be beneficial in breeding programs to produce soybean lines with high beneficial sucrose and low raffinose family oligosaccharides.

This research presents an innovative methodology for accurately predicting spring-back tendencies in V-bending of SS400 steel sheets under elevated temperatures. The study leverages extensive tensile test data to determine parameters for pure isotropic and kinematic hardening laws at varying temperatures, crucial inputs for Finite Element Method (FEM) simulations. While using pure isotropic or kinematic hardening laws alone has limitations, especially at elevated temperatures, a hybrid approach is recommended for robust predictive models in ABAQUS 6.13 software. To address this challenge, a novel method is introduced, utilizing flow stress curve ratios between elevated and room temperatures as a function of equivalent strain to derive combined hardening law parameters. Rigorous comparison of simulation and experimental results confirms the model’s effectiveness in predicting spring-back in the V-bending of SS400 steel sheets, particularly under elevated temperatures. This innovative approach enhances understanding of material behavior at high temperatures and improves predictive capabilities for designing and optimizing complex V-bending processes.

There have been sustained efforts toward using naturalistic methods in developmental science to measure infant behaviors in the real world from an egocentric perspective because statistical regularities in the environment can shape and be shaped by the developing infant. However, there is no user-friendly and unobtrusive technology to densely and reliably sample life in the wild. To address this gap, we present the design, implementation and validation of the EgoActive platform, which addresses limitations of existing wearable technologies for developmental research. EgoActive records the active infants’ egocentric perspective of the world via a miniature wireless head-mounted camera concurrently with their physiological responses to this input via a lightweight, wireless ECG/acceleration sensor. We also provide software tools to facilitate data analyses. Our validation studies showed that the cameras and body sensors performed well. Families also reported that the platform was comfortable, easy to use and operate, and did not interfere with daily activities. The synchronized multimodal data from the EgoActive platform can help tease apart complex processes that are important for child development to further our understanding of areas ranging from executive function to emotion processing and social learning.

The mental health of university students is not only a predominant topic for psychology and education researchers but also a source of interest for policymakers and various stakeholders. Although there has been a lot of research on higher education students’ mental health, we have little understanding on the mental health of international students (MHIS). Despite their distinctive characteristics compared to native students, the mental health issues of international students only started receiving attention very recently. So far, the literature on this topic lacks a comprehensive overview of its sub-topic and trending issues. By using bibliometric analysis, this research aims to fulfil this gap and provide a review of the extant literature about MHIS. Specifically, this study aims to (i) draw the growth trajectory and geographic distribution of the literature on MHIS; (ii) identify the documents and authors that have the greatest impact, generally and locally, within the major topic clusters of the literature on MHIS; and (iii) identify the most researched keywords in the literature on MHIS over time. The results have shown that academic documents about international students’ mental health are increasing in number and becoming more extensive content-wise. The research’s findings provide implications for stakeholders and identifies some prominent research avenues for the future.

The success of machine learning (ML) techniques implemented in different industries heavily rely on operator expertise and domain knowledge, which is used in manually choosing an algorithm and setting up the specific algorithm parameters for a problem. Due to the manual nature of model selection and parameter tuning, it is impossible to quantify or evaluate the quality of this manual process, which in turn limits the ability to perform comparison studies between different algorithms. In this study, we propose a new hybrid approach for developing machine learning workflows to help automated algorithm selection and hyperparameter optimization. The proposed approach provides a robust, reproducible, and unbiased workflow that can be quantified and validated using different scoring metrics. We have used the most common workflows implemented in the application of artificial intelligence (AI) and ML in engineering problems including grid/random search, Bayesian search and optimization, genetic programming, and compared that with our new hybrid approach that includes the integration of Tree-based Pipeline Optimization Tool (TPOT) and Bayesian optimization. The performance of each workflow is quantified using different scoring metrics such as Pearson correlation (i.e., R2 correlation) and Mean Square Error (i.e., MSE). For this purpose, actual field data obtained from 1567 gas wells in Marcellus Shale, with 121 features from reservoir, drilling, completion, stimulation, and operation is tested using different proposed workflows. A proposed new hybrid workflow is then used to evaluate the type well used for evaluation of Marcellus shale gas production. In conclusion, our automated hybrid approach showed significant improvement in comparison to other proposed workflows using both scoring matrices. The new hybrid approach provides a practical tool that supports the automated model and hyperparameter selection, which is tested using real field data that can be implemented in solving different engineering problems using artificial intelligence and machine learning. The new hybrid model is tested in a real field and compared with conventional type wells developed by field engineers. It is found that the type well of the field is very close to P50 predictions of the field, which shows great success in the completion design of the field performed by field engineers. It also shows that the field average production could have been improved by 8% if shorter cluster spacing and higher proppant loading per cluster were used during the frac jobs.

Although studies have explored the predictors of book reading interest among children, little is known about the underlying mechanism that helps children become interested in reading books. This study attempt to demonstrate: (1) how book-reading interest is driven by reasons for choosing books (recommendation or personal preference), (2) how students with high and low academic achievements are motivated by different thinking pathways, and (3) how home scholarly culture improves book-reading interest through such pathways. Using Bayesian analysis on a dataset of survey responses from 4966 Vietnamese secondary students (11–15 years old, sixth to ninth grade), we found: (i) Reading interest is positively associated with a book recommendation and parental book reading activities (parents read books to children); (ii) High-achieving students are more interested in reading books if they can choose those books according to personal preferences; (iii) Parental book reading activities can promote book reading interest through recommendations and also by understanding children’s personal preferences. We advocate a more personalized approach in educational policymaking, curriculum design, and home scholarly culture based on students’ abilities and perceptions.

Background/Aim: the aim of this study was to assess the skull vibration-induced nystagmus test (SVINT) results and vestibular residual function after horizontal semicircular canal (HSCC) plugging. Methods: In this retrospective chart review performed in a tertiary referral center, 11 patients who underwent unilateral horizontal semicircular canal plugging (uHSCCP) for disabling Menière’s disease (MD) were included. The skull vibration-induced nystagmus (SVIN) slow-phase velocity (SPV) was compared with the results of the caloric test (CaT), video head impulse test (VHIT), and cervical vestibular-evoked myogenic potentials (cVEMP) performed on the same day. Results: Overall, 10 patients had a strong SVIN beating toward the intact side (Horizontal SVIN-SPV: 8.8°/s ± 5.6°/s), 10 had a significant or severe ipsilateral CaT hypofunction, 10 had an ipsilateral horizontal VHIT gain impairment, and 3 had altered cVEMP on the operated side. Five had sensorineural hearing worsening. SVIN-positive results were correlated with CaT and horizontal VHIT (HVHIT) results (p < 0.05) but not with cVEMP. SVIN-SPV was correlated with CaT hypofunction in % (p < 0.05). Comparison of pre- and postoperative CaT % hypofunction showed a significant worsening (p = 0.028). Conclusion: SVINT results in a human model of horizontal canal plugging are well correlated with vestibular tests exploring horizontal canal function, but not with cVEMP. SVINT always showed a strong lesional nystagmus beating away from the lesion side. SVIN acts as a good marker of HSCC function. This surgical technique showed invasiveness regarding horizontal canal vestibular function.

The injection timing of fuel in a diesel engine affects the combustion condition. Advanced fuel injection prolongs the ignition delay, positively impacting the increase in maximum combustion pressure and improving output. However, excessively advanced fuel injection can cause knocking. Moreover, premature ignition results in increased compression work when the maximum combustion pressure occurs before top dead center (TDC). This study aimed to diagnose and rectify starting failures, noise, and vibrations in a commercially operated ship engine by measuring the combustion pressure during low load operation. The target engine was a 4-stroke diesel, and the fuel injection system was mechanically controlled by a camshaft. The measured engine exhibited a 4.5 °CA error between the TDC, determined by the flywheel mark and the actual TDC. This discrepancy was influenced by excessively advanced fuel injection timing. It was confirmed that fuel injection and ignition were excessively advanced in all cylinders. After readjusting the engine by delaying the fuel injection timing by approximately 10 °CA, the combustion pressure was remeasured. The ignition was delayed by approximately 6.5 °CA at the same load, and the ignition intervals were uniformly adjusted. As the ignition timing was retarded, the compression work decreased and the expansion work increased in each cylinder, resulting in improved output across all cylinders. The amplitude of crankshaft angular velocity variation significantly decreased, improving uneven rotational force.

The chemical investigation of Homotrigona apicalis propolis collected in Binh Dinh province, Vietnam, led to the isolation of nine compounds, including four sesquiterpenes: spathulenol (1), 1αH,5βH-aromandendrane-4β,10α-diol (2), 1β,6α-dihydroxy-4(15)-eudesmene (3), and 1βH,5βH-aromandendrane-4α,10β-diol (4); three triterpenes: acetyl oleanolic acid (5), 3α-hydroxytirucalla-8,24-dien-21-oic acid (6), and ursolic acid (7); and two xanthones: cochinchinone A (8) and α-mangostin (9). Sesquiterpens 1–4 and triterpene 6 were isolated for the first time from stingless bee propolis. Plants in the Cratoxylum and Aglaia genus were suggested as resin sources of the propolis sample. In the antibacterial activity evaluation, the EtOH extract only showed moderate activity on S. aureus, while the isolated compounds 7–9 showed good antibacterial activity, with IC50 values of 0.56 to 17.33 µg/mL. The EtOH extract displayed selective cytotoxicity against the A-549 cancer cell line, with IC50 values of 22.82 ± 0.86 µg/mL, and the xanthones 8 and 9 exhibited good activity against the KB, HepG-2, and A-549 cancer cell lines, with IC50 values ranging from 7.55 ± 0.25 µg/mL to 29.27 ± 2.07 µg/mL. The cytotoxic effects of xanthones 8 and 9 were determined by the inhibition of the EGFR and HER2 pathways using a molecular docking study. Compounds 8 and 9 displayed strong binding affinity with EFGR and HER2, with values of −9.3 to −9.9 kcal/mol. Compounds 5, 8, and 9 showed potential α-glucosidase inhibitory activities, which were further confirmed by computational studies. The binding energies of compounds 5, 8, and 9 were lower than that of arcabose.
