Persistent HPV infection is a major risk factor for the subsequent development of cervical cancer. LAMP is simple and suitable for field detection in the resource-limited settings. In this study, hydroxy naphthol blue (HNB)-based visual LAMP and evagreen-based fluorescent LAMP coupled with a microfluidic chip (LAMP-chip) were established for the field detection of seven subtypes of HPV. The analytical sensitivity was 19–233 copies/reaction. The overall clinical sensitivity was 97.35% for visual LAMP and 98.23% for LAMP-chip. Both LAMP assays exhibited 100% specificity and were completed in less than 50 min. Additionally, both assays did not require complicated nucleic acid extraction and purification steps. A complete quality control monitoring system (including internal control, positive quality control and negative control) in the LAMP assays further ensured the credibility of the results. Our findings demonstrated that the proposed LAMP assays have the potential to be applied in the testing of common HPV DNA in field investigations (visual LAMP) or within communities and primary health centers (LAMP-chip).

Sugar transporters play important roles in controlling carbohydrate transport and are responsible for mediating the movement of sugars into cells in numerous organisms. In insects, sugar transporters not only play a role in sugar transport but may also act as receptors for virus entry and the accumulation of plant defense compounds. The brown planthopper, Nilaparvata lugens, inflicts damage on rice plants by feeding on their phloem sap, which is rich in sugars. In the present study, we identified 34 sugar transporters in N. lugens, which were classified into three subfamilies based on phylogenetic analysis. The motif numbers varied from seven to eleven, and motifs 2, 3, and 4 were identified in the functional domains of all 34 NlST proteins. Chromosome 1 was found to possess the highest number of NlST genes, harboring 15. The gut, salivary glands, fat body, and ovary were the different tissues enriched with NlST gene expression. The expression levels of NlST2, 3, 4, 7, 20, 27, 28, and 31 were higher in the gut than in the other tissues. When expressed in a Saccharomyces cerevisiae hexose transporter deletion mutant (strain EBY.VW4000), only ApST4 (previously characterized) and NlST4, 28, and 31 were found to transport glucose and fructose, resulting in functional rescue of the yeast mutant. These results provide valuable data for further studies on sugar transporters in N. lugens and lay a foundation for finding potential targets to control N. lugens.

In the global apiculture industry, reward feeding and supplementary feeding are essential for maintaining bee colonies. Beekeepers provide artificial supplements to their colonies, typically in the form of either a honey–water solution or sugar syrup. Owing to cost considerations associated with beekeeping, most beekeepers opt for sugar syrup. However, the effects of different types of artificial sugar supplements on bee colonies and their subsequent impact on honey composition remain unclear. To address this gap, this study compared the chemical composition, antioxidant capacity, and nutritional potency of three types of honey: honey derived from colonies fed sugar syrup (sugar-based product, SP) or a honey–water solution (honey-sourced honey, HH) and naturally sourced honey (flower-sourced honey, FH), which served as the control. The results revealed that FH outperformed HH and SP in terms of total acidity, sugar content, total protein content, and antioxidant capacity, and HH outperformed SP. Regarding nutritional efficacy, including the lifespan and learning and memory capabilities of worker bees, FH exhibited the best outcomes, with no significant differences observed between HH and SP. This study underscores the importance of sugar source selection in influencing honey quality and emphasizes the potential consequences of substituting honey with sugar syrup in traditional apiculture practices.

This paper presents a waveguide Lens antenna at the W-band adopting dual-focusing Lens to improve the performance. The Lens antenna consisted of a waveguide slotted structure and lenses processed using NOA73 meet the demands of miniaturization for current communication systems. The antenna radome fabricated using NOA73 not only protects the antenna structure but also improves the gain of the antenna by about 9.5 dBi via electromagnetic wave dual-focusing. A prototype is fabricated using novel UV-LIGA technology. Measured results are compared with simulated values. Measured results confirmed the fabricated antenna operated in the W-band with a 10 dB fractional bandwidth (FBW) of 6.5% from 97.5 to 104 GHz and a peak gain of 22 dBi at 100 GHz in the direction perpendicular to the plane of the feed waveguide. A good agreement between simulation and measurement is obtained, demonstrating efficient radiations in the operating band.

With the rapid advancement of computer graphics and three-dimensional modeling technology, the processing and optimization of three-dimensional (3D) models have become contentious research topics. In the context of mobile devices or web applications, situations may arise where it becomes necessary to load a 3D model with a substantial memory footprint in real-time or dynamically adjust the level of detail of a model based on the scene’s proximity. In such cases, it is imperative to optimize the original model to ensure smoothness and responsiveness. Due to the simplicity of their algorithm, quadric error metrics (QEMs) can deliver excellent results in simplifying 3D models while maintaining high efficiency. Therefore, QEM is widely employed in engineering applications within the realm of computer graphics development. Moreover, in the pursuit of enhanced quality and efficiency, numerous scholars have improved it based on QEM algorithms. This study aims to provide a systematic review and summary of the principles and applications of current research on QEM algorithms. First, we conducted a bibliometric analysis of 128 studies in related fields spanning from 1998 to 2022 using CiteSpace. This allowed us to sort QEM algorithms and gain insights into their development status and emerging trends. Second, we delve into the fundamental principles and optimizations of the QEM algorithms to provide a deeper understanding of their implementation process. Following that, we explore the advantages and limitations of the QEM algorithms in practical applications and analyze their potential in various domains, including virtual reality and game development. Finally, this study outlines future research directions, which encompass the development of more efficient error metric calculation methods, the exploration of adaptive simplification strategies, and the investigation of potential synergies with deep learning technologies. Current research primarily centers on enhancing QEM algorithms by incorporating additional geometric constraints to better differentiate between flat and irregular areas. This enables a more accurate determination of the areas that should be prioritized for folding. Nevertheless, it is important to note that these improvements may come at the cost of reduced computational efficiency. Therefore, future research directions could involve exploring parallel computing techniques and utilizing GPUs to enhance computational efficiency.

Cisplatin (Cis) is considered to be one of the most effective drugs for killing cancer cells and remains a first-line chemotherapeutic agent. However, Cis’s multiple toxicities (especially nephrotoxicity) have limited its clinical use. Marsdenia tenacissima (Roxb.) Wight et Arn. (MT), a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) employed extensively in China, not only enhances the antitumor effect in combination with Cis, but is also used for its detoxifying effect, as it reduces the toxic side effects of chemotherapy drugs. The aim of this study was to explore the therapeutic effect of MT on Cis-induced nephrotoxicity, along with its underlying mechanisms. In this study, liquid–mass spectrometry was performed to identify the complex composition of the extracts of MT. In addition, we measured the renal function, antioxidant enzymes, and inflammatory cytokines in mice with Cis-induced nephrotoxicity and conducted renal histology evaluations to assess renal injury. The expressions of the proteins related to antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and apoptotic markers in renal tissues was detected by Western blotting (WB). MT treatment improved the renal function, decreased the mRNA expression of the inflammatory factors, and increased the antioxidant enzyme activity in mice. A better renal histology was observed after MT treatment. Further, MT inhibited the expression of the phospho-NFκB p65 protein/NFκB p65 protein (p-p65)/p65, phospho-inhibitor of nuclear factor kappa B kinase beta subunit/inhibitor of nuclear factor kappa B kinase beta subunit (p-IKKβ/IKKβ), Bcl-2-associated X (Bax), and Cleaved Caspase 3/Caspase 3 proteins, while the expression of nuclear factor-erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2), heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1), Recombinant NADH Dehydrogenase, Quinone 1 (NQO1), and B-cell lymphoma-2 (Bcl-2) was increased. The present study showed that MT ameliorated renal injury, which mainly occurs through the regulation of the Nrf2 pathway, the NF-κB pathway, and the suppression of renal tissue apoptosis. It also suggests that MT can be used as an adjuvant to mitigate the nephrotoxicity of Cis chemotherapy.

Motion estimation is a major issue in applications of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs). This paper proposes an entire solution to solve this issue using information from an Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) and a monocular camera. The solution includes two steps: visual location and multisensory data fusion. In this paper, attitude information provided by the IMU is used as parameters in Kalman equations, which are different from pure visual location methods. Then, the location of the system is obtained, and it will be utilized as the observation in data fusion. Considering the multiple updating frequencies of sensors and the delay of visual observation, a multi-rate delay-compensated optimal estimator based on the Kalman filter is presented, which could fuse the information and obtain the estimation of 3D positions as well as translational speed. Additionally, the estimator was modified to minimize the computational burden, so that it could run onboard in real time. The performance of the overall solution was assessed using field experiments on a quadrotor system, compared with the estimation results of some other methods as well as the ground truth data. The results illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Hepatic steatosis can cause liver dysfunction and cell injury, on which natural functional factors are expected to be an effective approach for long-term intervention. However, the cellular molecular mechanisms are unclear. Chlorogenic acid is a phenolic compound, which can regulate lipid metabolism and is abundant in burdock root. The aim of this study was to investigate the potential molecular mechanism of the effect of chlorogenic acid from burdock root (ACQA) on steatosis in HepG2 cells. In this study, we found that ACQA reduced the number of lipid droplets and lipid levels in oleic acid-treated HepG2 cells. Molecular mechanistic results showed that ACQA enhanced CPT-1 expression by activating AMPK-related signaling pathways, and the concentrations of Ca2+ and cAMP were increased with the intervention of ACQA. In addition, ACQA enhanced the β-oxidation of fatty acids, reduced alanine transaminase and aspartate transaminase, and inhibited apoptosis in oleic acid-treated HepG2 cells. Our studies elucidate a novel mechanism that ACQA enhances the β-oxidation of fatty acids through the AMPK/ACC/CPT-1 pathway to protect against steatosis in HepG2 cells, which provides insight into its molecular mechanism as well as intervention strategies for chlorogenic acid against fatty liver diseases.

Electro-optic modulator (EOM) is one of the key devices of high-speed optical fiber communication systems and ultra-wideband microwave photonic systems. Silicon–organic hybrid (SOH) integration platform combines the advantages of silicon photonics and organic materials, providing a high electro-optic effect and compact structure for photonic integrated devices. In this paper, we present an SOH-integrated EOM with comprehensive investigation of EOM structure design, silicon waveguide fabrication with Slot structure, on-chip poling of organic electro-optic material, and characterization of EO modulation response. The SOH-integrated EOM is measured with 3 dB bandwidth of over 50 GHz and half-wave voltage length product of 0.26 V·cm. Furthermore, we demonstrate a microwave photonics phase shifter by using the fabricated SOH-integrated dual parallel Mach–Zehnder modulator. The phase shift range of 410° is completed from 8 GHz to 26 GHz with a power consumption of less than 38 mW.

This study investigated the potential mechanism of action of tea polyphenols (TPs), one of the major active ingredients in tea, to enhance heat resistance in Drosophila and the attenuating effect of heat treatment of TPs on their efficacy. The results showed that TPs were able to prolong the average survival time of Drosophila under high-temperature stress (p < 0.05), but the effect of TPs in prolonging the survival time of Drosophila melanogaster was significantly reduced (p < 0.05) with increasing TP heat-treatment time until it disappeared. The composition of TPs changed after heat treatment. It was also shown that the weakening of the effect of TPs in improving the heat tolerance of Drosophila was related to the decrease in the content of catechins and phenolic acids in their fractions as well as with the increase in the content of laccase. Transcriptomic analysis showed that the effect of TPs on heat tolerance in Drosophila melanogaster was closely related to the longevity regulation pathway, the neuroactive ligand–receptor interaction signaling pathway, and the drug metabolism–cytochrome P450 pathway. Metabolomics analysis showed that the effect of TP intervention in improving the body’s heat tolerance was mainly related to amino acid metabolism and energy metabolism. However, thermal processing weakened the relevance of these transcriptomes and metabolomes. The present study reveals the mechanism of action by which heat-treated TPs affect the body’s heat tolerance, which is important for the development and utilization of the heat-protection function of tea.

In this paper, the vibration problem of a beam with a time fractional damping term is studied by the Hermite finite element method, and its fully discrete scheme is obtained. The stability and error estimation of the scheme are analyzed, and it was proved that it is unconditionally stable and has a convergence order of O(τ+τ3−α+h4). The validity of the scheme is verified by numerical examples, the effects of fractional derivative order and damping coefficient on beam vibration are analyzed and the superiority of the fractional order model has been demonstrated by comparing with the traditional damping model.

As a clean energy resource, coalbed methane (CBM) is an important industry in China’s dual-carbon strategic planning. Despite the immense potential of CBM resources in China, the current exploration level remains low due to outdated survey technology, impeding large-scale exploration and development. This study investigates the application of hyperspectral data in CBM enrichment areas, specifically focusing on the extraction of alteration minerals in the Hudi coal mine area of the Qinshui Basin using ZY-1 02D and Hyperion hyperspectral data. The hyperspectral alteration mineral identification methods are summarized and analyzed. A method that combines spectral feature matching and diagnostic characteristic parameters is proposed for mineral extraction based on the spectral characteristics of different minerals. The extraction results are verified through field samples using X-ray diffraction analysis. Results show that (1) both ZY-1 02D and Hyperion hyperspectral data yield favorable extraction results for clay and carbonate minerals; (2) the overall accuracy of clay and carbonate minerals extraction is higher using ZY-1 02D data compared with Hyperion data, with accuracies of 81.67% and 79.03%, respectively; (3) the proposed method effectively extracts alteration minerals in CBM enrichment areas using hyperspectral data, thereby providing valuable technical support for the application of hyperspectral data.

In this study, ZnAl-layered double hydroxide (ZnAl-LDH) was functionalized with 2-phenylbenzimidazole-5-sulfonic acid (PBSA) to prepare ZnAl-PBSA-LDH using a simple one-step method. The electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) result of the solution phase demonstrated excellent corrosion inhibition performance of ZnAl-PBSA-LDH. Subsequently, 0.6 wt.% ZnAl-PBSA-LDH with shielding effects and active inhibition was incorporated into the water-based epoxy (WEP) for preparing the high-performance anti-corrosion coating (6-ZPL/WEP). The EIS test illustrated that the 6-ZPL/WEP coating maintained a high low-frequency impedance modulus (|Z0.01 Hz|) after 30 days of immersion, which is nearly two orders of magnitude higher compared to that of the blank coating. These results demonstrated that ZnAl-PBSA-LDH could efficiently improve the corrosion resistance of the WEP coating. Therefore, this study introduces new insights into the use of layered double hydroxides (LDHs) in the domain of anti-corrosion.

Virus-free seed potatoes are generally divided into pre-elite seeds and certified seeds. To study the differences in dry matter accumulation and distribution between pre-elite seeds and certified seeds through a field randomized block two-factor experiment, pre-elite seeds and certified seeds of four varieties were selected to explore the differences in growth characteristics between the two levels of virus-free potatoes and to find a way to improve potato seed expansion efficiency. The results showed that the growth process of pre-elite seeds was slower and the growth period was longer than certified seeds. The dry matter accumulation of pre-elite seeds in various organs was lower than in certified seeds, and the distribution ratio in the roots and stems of each variety was also lower than the certified seed, while there was no significant difference in the leaf and tuber distribution ratio. The average dry matter accumulation rate in both pre-elite and certified seeds was sorted by size of tubers > leaves > stems > roots; however, it was significantly lower in pre-elite seeds than in certified seeds. Tuber fresh weight, tuber volume, tuber number, and the theoretical yield of certified seeds were higher than those of pre-elite seeds. Experiments have shown that appropriately prolonging the harvest time of virus-free potatoes, especially pre-elite seeds, and increasing the proportion of dry matter allocated to roots and stems by pre-elite seeds in the early growth stages can effectively increase yield.

The ‘Xiaobai’ apricot fruit is rich in nutrients and is harvested in summer, but the high temperature limits its storage period. To promote commercial quality and extend shelf life, we investigated the effectiveness of Ultraviolet C (UV-C) combined with 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP) treatment on ‘Xiaobai’ apricot fruit stored at 4 ± 0.5 °C for 35 days. The results revealed that the combination treatment of 1-MCP and UV-C performed better than either UV-C or 1-MCP alone in fruit quality preservation. The combination treatment could delay the increase in weight loss, ethylene production, and respiration rate; retain the level of soluble solid content, firmness, titratable acid, and ascorbic acid content; promote the total phenolics and flavonoids accumulation; improve antioxidant enzyme activity and relative gene expression, and DPPH scavenging ability; and reduce MDA, H2O2, O2.− production. The combined treatment improved the quality of apricot fruit by delaying ripening and increasing antioxidant capacity. Therefore, combining UV-C and 1-MCP treatment may be an effective way to improve the post-harvest quality and extend the storage period of the ‘Xiaobai’ apricot fruit, which may provide insights into the preservation of ‘Xiaobai’ apricot fruit.

Abundant research findings have proved the value of two-dimensional (2D) materials in the study of nonlinear optics in fiber lasers. However, there remains two problems: how to reduce the start-up threshold, and how to improve the damage threshold, of fiber lasers based on 2D materials. A 15.1 mW low-threshold mode-locked fiber laser, based on a Cr2Si2Te6 saturable absorber (SA) prepared by the liquid-phase exfoliation method, is demonstrated successfully in this work. This provides a useful and economical method to produce SAs with low insertion loss and low saturation intensity. Besides, multiple high-order harmonics, from the fundamental frequency (12.6 MHz) to the 49th-order harmonic (617.6 MHz), mode-locked operations are recorded. The experimental results indicate the excellent potential of Cr2Si2Te6 as an optical modulator in exploring the soliton dynamics, harmonic mode locking, and other nonlinear effects in fiber lasers.

An outbreak of viral encephalitis caused by a Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) genotype IV infection occurred in Australia between 2021 and 2022. A total of 47 cases and seven deaths were reported as of November 2022. This is the first outbreak of human viral encephalitis caused by JEV GIV since it was first isolated in Indonesia in the late 1970s. Here, a comprehensive phylogenetic analysis based on the whole genome sequences of JEVs revealed it emerged 1037 years ago (95% HPD: 463 to 2100 years). The evolutionary order of JEV genotypes is as follows: GV, GIII, GII, GI, and GIV. The JEV GIV emerged 122 years ago (95% HPD: 57–233) and is the youngest viral lineage. The mean substitution rate of the JEV GIV lineage was 1.145 × 10−3 (95% HPD values, 9.55 × 10−4, 1.35 × 10−3), belonging to rapidly evolving viruses. A series of amino acid mutations with the changes of physico-chemical properties located in the functional important domains within the core and E proteins distinguished emerging GIV isolates from old ones. These results demonstrate the JEV GIV is the youngest JEV genotype at a rapid evolution stage and has good host/vector adaptability for introduction to non-endemic areas. Thus, surveillance of JEVs is highly recommended.

Human immunodeficiency virus 1 (HIV-1) attacks the immune system, making people susceptible to various diseases, thus increasing their risk of death. Comprehensive detection of major HIV-1 strains circulating in China is vital for effective HIV-1 infection prevention and treatment. HIV-1 nucleic acid detection is considered effective for HIV-1 diagnosis since traditional immunological testing may fail to detect HIV-1 infection during the window period. This work demonstrates a one-pot two-stage amplification assay (RT-RAP), a combination of reverse transcription recombinase (RT- RAA), and quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR). The turn-around time of the assay is only 50 min and can be performed with commonly available laboratory equipment, the qPCR devices. The RT-RAP assay could detect approximately 5 and 14 copies/reaction of HIV-1 DNA and RNA using recombinant plasmids and standard reference strains, respectively. Additionally, we found that the clinical performance of RT-RAP (detected 169 samples out of 170 specimens) was consistent with that of qRT-PCR. The sensitivity and specificity of RT-RAP were 100.00% (99/99) and 98.59% (70/71), respectively, while its positive and negative predictive values were 99.00% (99/100) and 100.00% (70/70), respectively. The total coincidence rate of the RT-RAP was 99.41% (169/170), with a kappa value of 0.988 (p < 0.05). We demonstrated that RT-RAP could rapidly detect the common HIV-1 subtypes commonly circulating in China with comparable sensitivity and specificity to qRT-PCR.

Photonic integration brings the promise of significant cost, power and space savings and propels the real applications of microwave photonic technology. In this paper, a multiband radio frequency (RF) signal simultaneous receiver using an optical bandpass filter (OBPF) integrated with a photodetector (PD) on a chip is proposed, which was experimentally demonstrated. The OBPF was composed of ring-assisted Mach–Zehnder interferometer with a periodical bandpass response featuring a box-like spectral shape. The OBPF was connected to a PD and then integrated onto a single silicon photonic chip. Phase-modulated multiband RF signals transmitted from different locations were inputted into the OBPF, by which one RF sideband was filtered out and the phase modulation to intensity modulation conversion was realized. The single sideband with carrier signals were then simultaneously detected by the PD. A proof-of-concept experiment with the silicon photonic integrated chip was implemented to simultaneously receive four channels of 8 GHz, 12 GHz, 14 GHz and 18 GHz in the X- and Ku-bands. The performance of the integrated microwave photonic multiband receiver—including the receiving sensitivity, the spurious free dynamic range, the gain and the noise figure across the whole operation frequency band—was characterized in detail.

Agriophyllum squarrosum (sand rice), a widespread desert plant, possesses anti-hyperglycemic and anti-inflammatory properties, and has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for many years. However, its effects on ruminants are unknown. To fill this gap, we examined the effects of A. squarrosum on the immune and anti-inflammatory responses of lambs. A total of 23, 6-month-old Tan ewe-lambs (27.6 ± 0.47 kg) were divided into four groups and offered a basic diet (C—control), or a diet that contained 10%, 20%, or 30% A. squarrosum, on a dry matter basis, for 128 days. Serum concentrations of total cholesterol were lower (p = 0.004) in the 30% supplemented lambs than controls, while concentrations of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol were lower (p = 0.006) in the 10% and 20%, but not in 30% supplemented lambs than controls. Serum-cortisol concentrations were lower (p = 0.012) in the 30% supplemented lambs and free fatty acid concentrations were higher in the 10% and 20% supplemented lambs than in control lambs (p < 0.001). Supplementation with A. squarrosum decreased (p < 0.05) the area of adipocytes in subcutaneous adipose tissue, but there was no difference between the 20% and 30% diets. Conversely, the area in visceral adipose tissue (VAT) increased (p < 0.05), especially for the 10% and 20% supplemented diets. Supplementation with A. squarrosum also enriched immune and anti-inflammatory related and lipid and glucose-metabolic pathways and associated differentially expressed gene expressions in adipose tissue. A total of 10 differential triacylglycerol, 34 differential phosphatidylcholines and seven differential phosphatidylethanolamines decreased in the diet with 30% supplementation, when compared to the other diets. Finally, adipocyte-differentiation genes, and immune and inflammatory response-related gene expression levels decreased in lamb adipocytes cultured with an aqueous A. squarrosum extract. In conclusion, supplementing lamb diets with A. squarrosum reduced blood lipids, enhanced immunity and anti-inflammatory capacities, and mediated lipid metabolism in adipose tissue and adipocytes of Tan lambs. A level of approximately 10% is recommended, but further research is required to determine the precise optimal level.

Regulated cell death (RCD) is a signal-controlled process that not only eliminates infected, damaged, or aged cells but is also implicated in a variety of pathological conditions. The process of RCD is regulated by intracellular proteins that undergo varying levels of post-translational modifications, including mono- or polyubiquitination. Functionally, ubiquitination can affect protein abundance, localization, and activity. Like other post-translational modifications, ubiquitination is a dynamic and reversible process mediated by deubiquitinases, a large class of proteases that cleave ubiquitin from proteins and other substrates. The balance between ubiquitination and deubiquitination machinery determines cell fate under stressful conditions. Here, we review the latest advances in our understanding of the role of deubiquitinases in regulating the main types of RCD, including apoptosis, necroptosis, pyroptosis, and ferroptosis. This knowledge may contribute to identifying new protein degradation-related prognostic markers and therapeutic targets for human disease.

In this paper, we focus on the computation of Caputo-type fractional differential equations. A high-order predictor–corrector method is derived by applying the quadratic interpolation polynomial approximation for the integral function. In order to deal with the weak singularity of the solution near the initial time of the fractional differential equations caused by the fractional derivative, graded meshes were used for time discretization. The error analysis of the predictor–corrector method is carefully investigated under suitable conditions on the data. Moreover, an efficient sum-of-exponentials (SOE) approximation to the kernel function was designed to reduce the computational cost. Lastly, several numerical examples are presented to support our theoretical analysis.

Honey bees, rather than rear queens with eggs and larvae from worker cells, prefer to rear new queens with eggs form queen cells, if available. This may be a result of long-term evolutionary process for honey bee colonies. However, the exact mechanism of this phenomenon is unclear. In this study, queens were reared with eggs from queen cells (F1-QE), eggs from worker cells (F1-WE), and two-day-old larvae from worker cells (F1-2L). Physiological indexes and the expression of the development-related genes ((Hexamerin (Hex110, Hex70b), Transferrin (Trf), and Vitellogenin (Vg)) of reared F1 generation queens were measured and compared. Furthermore, F2 generation queens were reared with one-day-old larvae from F1 queens, and the weight and ovariole count of reared F2 generation daughter queens were examined. Meanwhile, the expression of the development- and reproduction-related genes (Hex110, Hex70b, Trf, Vg, and Juvenile Hormone (Jh)) and immune detoxication-related genes (Hymenoptaecin, Abeacin, and CytP450) of reared F2 queens were further explored. We found that the F1-QE queens had the highest physiological indexes and higher Hex110 and Trf expression levels, while no significant difference was found in the expression of Hex70b and Vg among the three groups of F1 queens. In addition, the reared queens of F2-QE had the highest quality, with the highest development, reproduction, immune-detoxication genes’ expression levels. Our results revealed that the quality of reared offspring queens from high-quality mother queens was also high. These findings inform methods for rearing high-quality queens and highlight that a high-quality queen is essential for offspring colony growth and survival.

A large dynamic frequency up-conversion scheme based on parallel dual-drive Mach–Zehnder modulators (DD-MZM) and balance detection is proposed and demonstrated experimentally. By optimizing the distribution ratio of the optical carrier power and the IF signal power between the two DD-MZMs, the third-order intermodulation components in two sub-links cancel each other upon the balanced photodetector. The measured results show that the large spurious-free dynamic range of 112.3 dB·Hz4/5 is obtained for an intermediate frequency signal of 2 GHz up-converted to 18 GHz, which is a 14.8 dB enhancement compared with the traditional carrier suppression double-sideband modulation mixer. The frequency up-conversion performance of the established system for the broadband signal is measured with the results demonstrating the feasibility of the proposed optimization scheme.

A ferromagnetic insulator Cr2Ge2Te6 as a saturable absorber in an Er-doped fiber laser (EDFL) was demonstrated. In this work, a CGT-PVA composite film was successfully fabricated using the liquid-phase exfoliation method and employed in an EDFL. The modulation depth and saturation intensity of the SA are 4.26% and 89.40 MW/cm2, respectively. Stable pulses with a minimum pulse width of 978.5 fs when the repetition rate was 3.25 MHz were recorded experimentally. Furthermore, stable solitons still need to be obtained when the pulse energy in the cavity is as high as 11.6 nJ. The results fully suggest that CGT has outstanding nonlinear absorption properties, which may have broad potential applications in ultrafast photons.

The Integrated Multi-satellitE Retrievals for the Global Precipitation Measurement mission (IMERG) has been widely evaluated. However, most of these studies focus on the ultimate merged satellite-gauge precipitation estimate and neglect the valuable intermediate estimates which directly guide the improvement of the IMERG product. This research aims to identify the error sources of the latest IMERG version 6 by evaluating the intermediate and ultimate precipitation estimates, and further examine the influences of regional topography and surface type on these errors. Results show that among six passive microwave (PMW) sensors, the Microwave Humidity Sounder (MHS) has outstanding comprehensive behavior, and Special Sensor Microwave Imager/Sounder (SSMIS) operates advanced at precipitation detection, while the Sounder for Atmospheric Profiling of Humidity in the Intertropics by Radiometry (SAPHIR) has the worst performance. More precipitation events are detected with larger quantitative uncertainty in low-lying places than in highlands, in urban and water body areas than in other places, and more in coastal areas than in inland regions. Infrared (IR) estimate has worse performance than PMW, and the precipitation detectability of IR is more sensitive to the factors of elevation and the distance to the coast, as larger critical successful index (CSI) over lowlands and coastal areas. PMW morphing and the mixing of PMW and IR algorithms partly reverse the conservative feature of the precipitation detection of PMW and IR estimates, resulting in higher probability of detection (POD) and false alert ratio (FAR). Finally, monthly gauge calibration improves most of the statistical indicators and reduces the influence of elevation and surface type factor on these errors.

In our work, passively mode-locked and Q-switched Er-doped fiber lasers (EDFLs) based on titanium disulfide (TiS2) as a saturable absorber (SA) were generated successfully. Stable mode-locked pulses centred at 1531.69 nm with the minimum pulse width of 2.36 ps were obtained. By reducing the length of the laser cavity and optimizing the cavity loss, Q-switched operation with a maximum pulse energy of 67.2 nJ and a minimum pulse duration of 2.34 µs was also obtained. Its repetition rate monotonically increased from 13.17 kHz to 48.45 kHz with about a 35 kHz tuning range. Our experiment results fully indicate that TiS2 exhibits excellent nonlinear absorption performance and significant potential in acting as ultra-fast photonics devices.
