Background: The prediction of fluid responsiveness in critical patients helps clinicians in decision making to avoid either under- or overloading of fluid. This study was designed to determine whether lung recruitment maneuver (LRM) would have an effect on the predictability of fluid responsiveness by the changes of hemodynamic parameters in pediatric patients who were receiving lung-protective ventilation and one-lung ventilation (OLV). Methods: A total of 34 children, aged 1–6 years old, scheduled for heart surgeries via right thoracotomy were enrolled. Patients were anesthetized and OLV with lung-protection ventilation settings was established, and then, positioned on left lateral decubitus. LRM and volume expansion (VE) were performed in sequence. Heart rate (HR), systolic arterial pressure (SAP), mean arterial pressure (MAP) diastolic arterial pressure (DAP), stroke volume (SV), stroke volume variation (SVV), and pulse pressure variation (PPV) were recorded via an A-line based monitor system at the following time points: before and after LRM (T1 and T2) and before and after VE (T3 and T4). An increase in stroke volume (SV) or mean arterial pressure (MAP) of ≥10% following fluid loading identified fluid responders. The predictability of fluid responsiveness by the changes of SV (ΔSVLRM) and MAP (ΔMAPLRM) after LRM and VE were statistically evaluated by receiver operating characteristic curves [area under the curves (AUC)]. Results: SVs in all patients were significantly decreased after LRM (p < 0.01) and then, increased and returned to baseline after VE (p < 0.01). In total, 16 out of 34 patients who were fluid responders had significantly lower SV after LRM compared to that in fluid non-responders. The area under the receiver operating characteristic curves for ΔSVLRM was 0.828 (95% confidence interval [CI], 0.660 to 0.935; p < 0.001) and it indicated that ΔSVLRM was able to predict the fluid responsiveness of pediatric patients. MAPs in all patients were also decreased significantly after LRM, and 12 of them fell into the category of fluid responders after VE. Statistically, ΔMAPLRM did not predict fluid responsiveness when LRM was considered as an influential factor (p = 0.07). Conclusions: ΔSVLRM, but not ΔMAPLRM, showed great reliability in the prediction of the fluid responsiveness following VE in children during one-lung ventilation with lung-protective settings. The use of bistatic polarimetric SAR for rough surface observation has attracted increasing interest in recent years, with its acquisition of additional polarimetric information. In this paper, we investigate the sensitivity of polarimetric variables to soil moisture and surface roughness, with the intention of locating favorable bistatic geometries for soil moisture retrieval. However, in the bistatic setting, the expanded imaging geometry is convolved with the polarimetric scattering response along with the in-scene variations in the soil moisture and surface roughness. The probing polarization states continuously evolve with the bistatic geometry, incurring varying polarization orientation angles. In this investigation, we propose to first compensate the bistatic polarimetric observations for the geometry-induced polarization rotation. Simulations based on a two-scale rough surface scattering model are then used to evaluate the optimal imaging geometry for the best sensitivity to the soil moisture content. We show the different sensing geometries associated with a full list of common polarimetric variables, as we seek favorable bistatic geometries in non-specular directions. The influences of both surface roughness scales are evaluated, with the small-scale roughness parameter imposing the greatest limitation on our results.

Accurate measurement and interpretation of serum levels of troponin (Tn) is a central part of the clinical workup of a patient presenting with chest pain suspicious for acute coronary syndrome (ACS). Knowledge of the molecular characteristics of the troponin complex and test characteristics of troponin measurement assays allows for a deeper understanding of causes of false positive and false negative test results in myocardial injury. In this review, we discuss the molecular structure and functions of the constituent proteins of the troponin complex (TnT, TnC, and TnI); review the different isoforms of Tn and where they are from; survey the evolution of clinical Tn assays, ranging from first-generation to high-sensitivity (hs); provide a primer on statistical interpretation of assay results based on different clinical settings; and discuss potential causes of false results. We also summarize the advances in technologies that may lead to the development of future Tn assays, including the development of point of care assays and wearable Tn sensors for real-time continuous measurement.

Lipid droplets (LDs) are intracellular organelles that play important roles in cellular lipid metabolism; they change their sizes and numbers in response to both intracellular and extracellular signals. Changes in LD size reflect lipid synthesis and degradation and affect many cellular activities, including energy supply and membrane synthesis. Here, we focused on the function of the endoplasmic reticulum–plasma membrane tethering protein Ice2 in LD dynamics in the fungal pathogen Candida albicans (C. albicans). Nile red staining and size quantification showed that the LD size increased in the ice2Δ/Δ mutant, indicating the critical role of Ice2 in the regulation of LD dynamics. A lipid content analysis further demonstrated that the mutant had lower phosphatidylcholine levels. As revealed with GFP labeling and fluorescence microscopy, the methyltransferase Cho2, which is involved in phosphatidylcholine synthesis, had poorer localization in the plasma membrane in the mutant than in the wild-type strain. Interestingly, the addition of the phosphatidylcholine precursor choline led to the recovery of normal-sized LDs in the mutant. These results indicated that Ice2 regulates LD size by controlling intracellular phosphatidylcholine levels and that endoplasmic reticulum–plasma membrane tethering proteins play a role in lipid metabolism regulation in C. albicans. This study provides significant findings for further investigation of the lipid metabolism in fungi.

The IEEE 802.11 standard provides multi-rate support for different versions. As there is no specification on the dynamic strategy to adjust the rate, different rate adaptation algorithms are applied according to different manufacturers. Therefore, it is often hard to interpret the performance discrepancy of various devices. Moreover, the ever-changing channels always challenge the rate adaptation, especially in the scenario with scarce spectrum and low SNR. As a result, it is important to sense the radio environment cognitively and reduce the unnecessary oscillation of the transmission rate. In this paper, we propose an environment-aware robust (EAR) algorithm. This algorithm employs an occasional small packet, designs a rate scheme adaptive to the environment, and enhances the robustness. We verify the throughput of EAR using network simulator NS-3 in terms of station number, motion speed and node distance. We also compare the proposed algorithm with three benchmark methods: AARF, RBAR and CHARM. Simulation results demonstrate that EAR outperforms other algorithms in several wireless environments, greatly improving the system robustness and throughput.

Water transport through membranes is an attractive topic among the research dedicated to dehydration processes, microenvironment regulation, or more simply, recovery of freshwater. Herein, an atomistic computer simulation is proposed to provide new insights about a water vapor transport mechanism through PEBAX membranes filled with ionic liquid (IL) [C12C1im]Cl. Starting from experimental evidence that indicates an effective increase in water permeation as the IL is added to the polymer matrix (e.g., up to 85·10−3 (g·m)/(m2·day) at 318.15 K for PEBAX@2533 membranes loaded with 70% of IL), molecular dynamics simulations are proposed to explore the key role of IL in water transport inside membranes. The polar region composed of anions and cationic head groups of the IL is demonstrated to serve as the pathway for water transport through the membrane. Water molecules always stay near the pathway, which becomes wider and thus has a larger water-accessible area with increasing IL concentration. Hence, the diffusion coefficients of water molecules and ions increase as the IL concentration increases. The simulation provides useful indications about a microscopic mechanism that regulates the transport of water vapor through a kind of PEBAX/IL membrane, resulting in full agreement with the experimental evidence.

The use of green and sustainable biomass-derived compounds to obtain excellent electrochemical properties is important to address growing environmental and energy issues. In this paper, cheap and abundant watermelon peel was used as a raw material to successfully synthesize nitrogen-phosphorus double-doped bio-based porous carbon by a one-step carbonization method and explore it as a renewable carbon source for low-cost energy storage devices. The supercapacitor electrode exhibited a high specific capacity of 135.2 F/g at a current density of 1 A/g in a three-electrode system. A variety of characterization methods and electrochemical tests indicate that porous carbon prepared by this simple method has great potential as electrode materials for supercapacitors.

The carbon materials derived from discarded masks and lignin are used as adsorbent to remove two types of reactive dyes present in textile wastewater: anionic and cationic. This paper introduces the results of batch experiments where Congo red (CR) and Malachite green (MG) are removed from wastewater onto the carbon material. The relationship between adsorption time, initial concentration, temperature and pH value of reactive dyes was investigated by batch experiments. It is discovered that pH 5.0–7.0 leads to the maximum effectiveness of CR and MG removal. The equilibrium adsorption capacities of CR and MG are found to be 232.02 and 352.11 mg/g, respectively. The adsorption processes of CR and MG are consistent with the Freundlich and Langmuir adsorption models, respectively. The thermodynamic processing of the adsorption data reveals the exothermic properties of the adsorption of both dyes. The results show that the dye uptake processes follow secondary kinetics. The primary adsorption mechanisms of MG and CR dyes on sulfonated discarded masks and alkaline lignin (DMAL) include pore filling, electrostatic attraction, π-π interactions and the synergistic interactions between the sulphate and the dyes. The synthesized DMAL with high adsorption efficiency is promising as an effective recyclable adsorbent for adsorbing dyes, especially MG dyes, from wastewater.

Cellulosic ethanol is regarded as a perfect additive for petrol fuels for global carbon neutralization. As bioethanol conversion requires strong biomass pretreatment and overpriced enzymatic hydrolysis, it is increasingly considered in the exploration of biomass processes with fewer chemicals for cost-effective biofuels and value-added bioproducts. In this study, we performed optimal liquid-hot-water pretreatment (190 °C for 10 min) co-supplied with 4% FeCl3 to achieve the near-complete biomass enzymatic saccharification of desirable corn stalk for high bioethanol production, and all the enzyme-undigestible lignocellulose residues were then examined as active biosorbents for high Cd adsorption. Furthermore, by incubating Trichoderma reesei with the desired corn stalk co-supplied with 0.05% FeCl3 for the secretion of lignocellulose-degradation enzymes in vivo, we examined five secreted enzyme activities elevated by 1.3–3.0-fold in vitro, compared to the control without FeCl3 supplementation. After further supplying 1:2 (w/w) FeCl3 into the T. reesei-undigested lignocellulose residue for the thermal-carbonization process, we generated highly porous carbon with specific electroconductivity raised by 3–12-fold for the supercapacitor. Therefore, this work demonstrates that FeCl3 can act as a universal catalyst for the full-chain enhancement of biological, biochemical, and chemical conversions of lignocellulose substrates, providing a green-like strategy for low-cost biofuels and high-value bioproducts.

Pectin is one of the constituents of the cell wall, distributed in the primary cell wall and middle lamella, affecting the rheological properties and the cell wall stickiness. Pectin methylesterase (PME) and pectin methylesterase inhibitor (PMEI) are the most important factors for modifying methyl esterification. In this study, 45 PMEI genes from rice (Oryza sativa L.) were screened by bioinformatics tools, and their structure, motifs, cis-acting elements in the promoter region, chromosomal distribution, gene duplication, and phylogenetic relationship were analyzed. Furthermore, CRISPR/Cas9 was used to edit the OsPMEI12 (LOC_Os03G01020) and two mutant pmei12 lines were obtained to explore the functions of OsPMEI in plant growth and development, and under cadmium (Cd) stress. Compared to wild type (WT) Nipponbare, the second inverted internodes of the mutant plants shortened significantly, resulting in the reduction in plant height at mature stage. The seed setting rate, and fresh and dry weights of the mutants were also decreased in mutant plants. In addition, the pectin methylation of pmei12 lines is decreased as expected, and the pectin content of the cell wall increased at both seedling and maturity stages; however, the cellulose and hemicellulose increased only at seedling stage. Interestingly, the growth of the pmei12 lines was better than the WT in both normal conditions and under two phytohormone (GA3 and NAA) treatments at seedling stage. Under Cd stress, the fresh and dry weights were increased in pmei12 lines. These results indicated that OsPMEI12 was involved in the regulation of methyl esterification during growth, affected cell wall composition and agronomic traits, and might play an important role in responses to phytohormones and stress.

Chitosan (CTS) has been used as a nerve guidance conduit (NGC) material for bridging peripheral nerve defects due to its biocompatible, biodegradable, and non-toxic properties. However, the nerve regeneration effect of chitosan alone is restricted due to its inadequate biological activity. Herein, a composite, bioactive chitosan based nerve conduit, consisting of outer warp-knitted tube scaffold made from medical-grade chitosan fiber, and inner porous cross linked carboxymethyl chitosan (C-CM-CTS) sponge with radial texture was developed. The inner wall of the scaffold was coated with C-CM-CTS solution. CM-CTS provided favorable bioactivities in the composite chitosan-based nerve conduit. An in vitro study of CM-CTS revealed its satisfying biocompatibility with fibroblast and its inhibition of oxidative damage to Schwann cells. As the internal filler of the NGC, the lyophilized sponge of C-CM-CTS showed a longitudinal guidance effect for nerve reconstruction. After 10 mm defect in rat sciatic nerve was bridged with the composite bioactive chitosan-based nerve conduit, the nerve conduit was able to effectively promote axonal regeneration and played a positive role in inducing nerve regeneration and functional recovery. In addition to the functional advantages, which are equal to those of an autograft; the technology for the preparation of this conduit can be put into mass production.

The overuse of antibiotics remains serious and has led to a dramatic increase in antimicrobial resistance, which poses a significant threat to global public health, although much action has been taken by World Health Organization and countries. As the direct evidence to guide the prescribing of antibiotics, the Antimicrobial Susceptibility Testing (AST) results were biased by sample errors, which was urgent and poorly explored in quality management. This study aimed to analyze sample errors pre-AST and its influencing factors from the perspective of hospital management, to provide evidence for promoting rational antibiotic use and antimicrobial stewardship. A cross-sectional survey of 5963 clinical nurses involved in pathogenic sample collection was conducted in 118 public hospitals in Hubei province, China. Dependent variables were sample errors attributed to resources and technology-oriented, capability-oriented, and attitude-oriented errors, which were measured by times per week. Independent variables were sample management information such as guidelines, record after collection, performance appraisal, training, and publicity activities, in which guidelines, record time, and record method were dummy variables, with 1 indicating having and 0 not. Others were continuous variables ranging from 0 to 4 times per month. Ordinary Least Square regression models were performed to analyze influencing factors on sample error times. The averages of sample errors on resource and technology-oriented, capability-oriented, and attitude-oriented were 1.48, 1.35, and 1.36 times per week, and their proportion were 25.3%, 38.9%, and 35.8%, respectively. The results showed that recording timeliness (r = −0.354, p < 0.01), record using both paper and digital methods(r = −0.060, p < 0.01), performance appraisal(r = −0.188, p < 0.01), and publicity activities (r = −0.186, p < 0.01) significantly reduced times of resource and technology-oriented errors. Performance appraisals(r = −0.171, p < 0.01) and training activities (r = −0.208, p < 0.01) had a positive impact on the reduction of capability-oriented error times. The times of attitude-oriented error decreased significantly when recording timeliness (r = −0.299, p < 0.01), implementing performance appraisal (r = −0.164, p < 0.01), and training activities (r = −0.188, p < 0.01). This study found that there was a high frequency of sample errors in quality management, especially capability-oriented and attitude-oriented errors. Sample information management, performance appraisal, training, and publicity activities were associated with the quality of samples valuable for the rational use of antibiotics.

Purpose: Neuroinflammation often initiates iron overload in the pathogenesis of neurological disorders. Chemokine-driven neuroinflammation is required for central sensitization and chronic allodynia following fractures, but specific molecular modulations are elusive. This present study explored whether hydrogen-rich saline, as one potent anti-inflammatory pharmaceutical, could alleviate fracture-caused allodynia by suppressing chemokine CXCL1 expression and iron overload. Methods: A mouse model of tibial fracture with intramedullary pinning was employed for establishing chronic allodynia. Three applications of hydrogen-rich saline (1, 5 or 10 mL/kg) were administrated intraperitoneally on a daily basis from days 4 to 6 following fractures. Spinal CXCL1 and its receptor CXCR2 levels, transferrin receptor 1 (TfR1) expression and iron concentration were examined. Recombinant CXCL1, a selective CXCR2 antagonist and an iron chelator were used for verification of mechanisms. Results: Repetitive injections of hydrogen-rich saline (5 and 10 mL/kg but not 1 mL/kg) prevent fracture-caused mechanical allodynia and cold allodynia in a dose-dependent manner. Single exposure to hydrogen-rich saline (10 mL/kg) on day 14 after orthopedic surgeries controls the established persistent fracture allodynia. Furthermore, hydrogen-rich saline therapy reduces spinal CXCL1/CXCR2 over-expression and TfR1-mediated iron accumulation in fracture mice. Spinal CXCR2 antagonism impairs allodynia and iron overload following fracture surgery. Intrathecal delivery of recombinant CXCL1 induces acute allodynia and spinal iron overload, which is reversed by hydrogen-rich saline. Moreover, iron chelation alleviates exogenous CXCL1-induced acute pain behaviors. Conclusions: These findings identify that hydrogen-rich saline confers protection against fracture-caused chronic allodynia via spinal down-modulation of CXCL1-dependent TfR1-mediated iron accumulation in mice.

Magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) are becoming important DNA nanocarriers for genetic engineering of industrial fungi. However, the biological effect of MNPs on industrial fungi remains unknown. In this study, we prepared three kinds of magnetic nanoparticles with different sizes (i.e., 10 nm, 20 nm, and 200 nm) to investigate their impact on the growth and sporulation of the important industrial fungus Aspergillus niger. Transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction analysis and Zeta potential analysis revealed that the three kinds of MNPs, including MNP10, MNP20 and MNP200, had uniform size distribution, regular Fe3O4 X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns and similar Zeta potentials. Interestingly, although the three kinds of MNPs did not obviously inhibit growth of the fungus, the MNP20 at 500 mg/L strongly attenuated sporulation, leading to a remarkable decrease in spore numbers on culturing plates. Further investigation showed that MNP20 at the high concentration led to drastic chitin accumulation in the cell wall, indicating cell wall disruption of the MNP20-treated fungal cells. Moreover, the MNPs did not cause unusual iron dissolution and reactive oxygen species (ROS) accumulation, and the addition of ferrous ion, ferric ion or the reactive oxygen species scavenger N-acetyl-L-cysteine (NAC) had no impact on the sporulation of the fungus, suggesting that both iron dissolution and ROS accumulation did not contribute to attenuated sporulation by MNP20. This study revealed the size-dependent effect of MNPs on fungal sporulation, which was associated with MNP-induced cell wall disruption.

The selective and effective conversion of CO2 into available chemicals by electrochemical methods was applied as a promising way to mitigate the environment and energy crisis. Metal silver is regarded as an efficient electrocatalyst that can selectively convert CO2 into CO at room temperature. In this paper, a series of coral-like porous Ag (CD-Ag) catalysts were fabricated by calcining silver-carbonaceous microsphere (Ag/CM) precursors with different Ag content and the formation mechanism of CD-Ag catalysts was proposed involving the Ag precursor reduction and CM oxidation. In the selective electrocatalytic reduction of CO2 to CO, the catalyst 15 CD-Ag showed a stable current density at −6.3 mA/cm2 with a Faraday efficiency (FE) of ca. 90% for CO production over 5 h in −0.95 V vs. RHE. The excellent performance of the 15 CD-Ag catalysts is ascribed to the special surface chemical state and the particular nano-coral porous structure with uniformly distributed Ag particles and pore structure, which can enhance the electrochemical active surface areas (ECSA) and provide more active sites and porosity compared with other CD-Ag catalysts and even Ag foil.

Nonoxidative dehydrogenation of isobutane is one of the sustainable strategies for producing high value added isobutene. As alternatives for the commercial Pt- and Cr-based dehydrogenation catalysts, supported V-based catalysts are worthy of study. In this work, a series of VOx/mMgAlO-R catalysts (m = 10, 15, 20, 25 and 30) were designed and prepared by loading VOx on mMgAlO composite oxide supports derived from mesoporous Al2O3-supported layered double hydroxide (LDH) nanocomposites. The calcined and reduced catalysts were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectra, Ultraviolet-visible diffuse reflectance (UV-Vis) spectra, NH3 temperature-programmed desorption (NH3-TPD), Temperature-programmed reduction (H2-TPR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), thermogravimetric analysis (TG) and low temperature N2 adsorption–desorption isotherms. The as-synthesized VOx/20MgAlO-R with appropriate Mg addition exhibits superior activity (43–56% conversion and 77–81% selectivity), excellent stability and coking-resistance for the isobutane dehydrogenation. The structure–performance relationship reveals that the formation of VOx species confined in the reconstructed LDH interlayer and porous MgO facilitates dispersing and stabilizing the VOx species. The low polymerization degree and higher proportion of V4+ ion for VOx species, strong acidity of medium acid sites and low concentration of strong acid sites are responsible for the excellent anti-coking and catalytic performance. The strong VOx–support interaction is beneficial for enhancing the stability of the catalysts.

The Modular Multilevel Converter-High Voltage Direct Current (MMC-HVDC) system is recognized worldwide as a highly efficient strategy for transporting renewable energy across regions. As most of the MMC-HVDC system electronics are weak against overcurrent, protections of the MMC-HVDC system are the major focus of research. Because of the insufficiencies of the conventioned fault diagnosis method of MMC-HVDC system, such as hand-designed fault thresholds and complex data pre-processing, this paper proposes a new method for fault detection and location based on Bidirectional Gated Recurrent Unit (Bi-GRU). The proposed method has obvious advantages of feature extraction on the bi-directional structure, and it simplifies the pre-processing of fault data. The simplified pre-processing avoids the loss of valid information in the data and helps to extract detailed fault characteristics, thus improving the accuracy of the method. Extensive simulation experiments show that the proposed method meets the speed requirement of MMC-HVDC protections (2 ms) and the accuracy rate reaches 99.9994%. In addition, the method is not affected by noise and has a high potential for practical applications.

As microplastic pollution continues to increase, an emerging threat is the potential for microplastics to act as novel substrates and/or carriers for pathogens. This is of particular concern for aquatic product safety given the growing evidence of microplastic ingestion by aquaculture species. However, the potential risks of pathogens associated with microplastics in mariculture remain poorly understood. Here, an in situ incubation experiment involving three typical microplastics including polyethylene terephthalate (PET), polyethylene (PE), and polypropylene (PP) was conducted during the summer–autumn period in a mariculture cage. The identification of potential pathogens based on the 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing and a custom-made database for pathogenic bacteria involved in aquatic environments, was performed to assess the risks of different microplastics attaching potential pathogens. The enrichment of pathogens was not observed in microplastic-associated communities when compared with free-living and particle-attached communities in surrounding seawater. Despite the lower relative abundance, pathogens showed different preferences for three microplastic substrates, of which PET was the most favored by pathogens, especially potentially pathogenic members of Vibrio, Tenacibaculum, and Escherichia. Moreover, the colonization of these pathogens on microplastics was strongly affected by environmental factors (e.g., temperature, nitrite). Our results provide insights into the ecological risks of microplastics in mariculture industry.

Banana is a major fruit crop throughout the world with abundant lignocellulose in the pseudostem and rachis residues for biofuel production. In this study, we collected a total of 11 pseudostems and rachis samples that were originally derived from different genetic types and ecological locations of banana crops and then examined largely varied edible carbohydrates (soluble sugars, starch) and lignocellulose compositions. By performing chemical (H2SO4, NaOH) and liquid hot water (LHW) pretreatments, we also found a remarkable variation in biomass enzymatic saccharification and bioethanol production among all banana samples examined. Consequently, this study identified a desirable banana (Refen1, subgroup Pisang Awak) crop containing large amounts of edible carbohydrates and completely digestible lignocellulose, which could be combined to achieve the highest bioethanol yields of 31–38% (% dry matter), compared with previously reported ones in other bioenergy crops. Chemical analysis further indicated that the cellulose CrI and lignin G-monomer should be two major recalcitrant factors affecting biomass enzymatic saccharification in banana pseudostems and rachis. Therefore, this study not only examined rich edible carbohydrates for food in the banana pseudostems but also detected digestible lignocellulose for bioethanol production in rachis tissue, providing a strategy applicable for genetic breeding and biomass processing in banana crops.

Grain size and weight are two important determinants of grain yield in rice. Although overexpression of sucrose synthase (SUS) genes has led to several improvements on cellulose and starch-based traits in transgenic crops, little is reported about SUS enhancement of hull size and grain weight in rice. In this study, we selected transgenic rice plants that overexpressed OsSUS1-6 genes driven with the maize Ubi promoter. Compared to the controls (wild type and empty vector line), all independent OsSUS homozygous transgenic lines exhibited considerably increased grain yield and grain weights. Using the representative OsSUS3 overexpressed transgenic plants, four independent homozygous lines showed much raised cell numbers for larger hull sizes, consistent with their enhanced primary cell wall cellulose biosynthesis and postponed secondary wall synthesis. Accordingly, the OsSUS3 transgenic lines contained much larger endosperm volume and higher starch levels than those of the controls in the mature grains, leading to increased brown grain weights by 15−19%. Hence, the results have demonstrated that OsSUS overexpression could significantly improve hull size and grain weight by dynamically regulating cell division and starch accumulation in the transgenic rice.

Electromagnetic pollution interferes with electronic equipment in proximity and jeopardizes human health, which urges the development of electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding materials. It is urgent to develop electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding materials. However, the preparation of materials with superhydrophobicity, flame retardancy and EMI shielding properties is still challenging. In this study, we invented a core-spun yarn feeding device, which uses polysulfonamide (PSA) roving as a coating material and stainless steel wire as the core material to prepare a conductive core-spun yarn, which solves the problem of the wire having an easily exposed fabric surface. The finally prepared conductive fabric was subjected to Waterproof 2P hydrophobic treatment to form a superhydrophobic flame-retardant EMI shielding fabric. The results show that the hydrophobic treatment creates a thin film over the woven fabrics, and the contact angle of the fabric surface can reach 155°. The hydrophobic treatment will not damage the shielding effect and slightly increase the dB value. The average dB value of PSA-SS-1’ and PSA-SS-2’ are increased by 0.82 dB and 1.92 dB, respectively. When composed of conductive wrapped yarns for both the warp and weft yarns, the electromagnetic interference shielding effectiveness (EMI SE) of conductive fabrics is beyond 30 dB at 0−3000 MHz and the burnt depth is shorter than 40 mm. As for real applications, superhydrophobic/flame retardant/EMI SE fabrics can be used in a moist and complex environment with retaining conductivity and shielding effectiveness.

Cancer is considered to have an adverse influence on health around the world. Chitosan, a linear polysaccharide that contains copolymers of β-1-4 linked d-glucosamine and N-acetyl-d-glucosamine units, has been widely used in the field of biomedicine, owing to its nontoxicity, biocompatibility, biodegradability, and hemocompatibility. This study was aimed at preparing the chitosan oligosaccharides (COS) and examining its ability on suppressing lung cancer in vitro and in vivo. Human non-small-cell lung cancer A549 cells model and C57BL/6 mice bearing lung cancer model were adopted. COS showed inhibition on the viability and proliferation of lung carcinoma cells (A549) in time-dependent manners, but no cytotoxicity to human liver cell (HL-7702). Moreover, COS could significantly increase Bax expression of A549 cells while decreasing Bcl-2 expression. COS supplementation significantly inhibited the growth of Lewis tissues and promoted necrosis of tumor cells in vivo. After treatment with COS, significantly elevated concentrations of Bax and reduced expression of Bcl-2 in tumor tissues, as well as elevated levels of TNF-α, IL-2, Fas and Fas-L in mice serum were observed (p < 0.05). In conclusion, COS had certain anti-tumor effects and potential application as a synergic functional food ingredient to prevent cancer.

Five distinct crystal structures, based on experimental data or constructed manually, of ionic liquid [C14Mim][NO3] were heated in NPT molecular dynamics simulations under the same pressure such that they melted into the liquid crystal (LC) phase and then into the liquid phase. It was found that the more entropy-favored structure had a higher solid-LC transition temperature: Before the transition into the LC, all systems had to go through a metastable state with the side chains almost perpendicular to the polar layers. All those crystals finally melted into the same smectic-A LC structure irrelevant of the initial crystal structure.
