Structural robustness is defined by the international engineering community as the capabilities of structural systems that enable them to survive unforeseen or unusual circumstances. In order to highlight the unforeseen and unusual characteristics of wind hazards, this study introduces the concept of structural robustness into the wind-resistant design and evaluation of bridges and proposes the robustness evaluation of aerodynamic flutter and aerostatic torsional stability of long-span bridges. Furthermore, the return period of the design wind speed that a bridge can resist is used to represent wind-resistant robustness. Aiming at the problem of aerodynamic and aerostatic stability, the analysis methods of aerodynamic flutter stability robustness and aerostatic torsional stability robustness of long-span suspension bridges are respectively established. Based on the established methods of aerodynamic flutter stability and aerostatic torsional stability robustness evaluation, robustness analysis is carried out on eight completed long-span suspension bridges and two long-span suspension bridges to be built. The evaluation method proposed in this study makes it possible to measure the ability of bridge structures to resist multiple disasters using the same index.

Flutter derivatives (FDs) of the bridge deck are basic aerodynamic parameters by which flutter analysis determines critical flutter velocity (CFV), and they are traditionally identified by sectional model wind tunnel tests or computational fluid dynamics (CFD) numerical simulation. Based on some wind tunnel testing results and numerical simulation data, the machine learning models for identifying FDs of closed-box girders are trained and developed via a gradient boosting decision tree in this study. The models can explore the underlying input–output transfer relationship of datasets and realize rapid intelligent identification of FDs without wind tunnel tests or numerical simulation. This method also provides a convenient and feasible option for expanding datasets of FDs, and the distribution of FDs can be analyzed through the post-interpretation of trained models. Combined with FD sensitivity analysis, the models can be verified by the calculation error of CFV. In addition, the proposed method can help determine the appropriate shape of the box girder cross-section in the preliminary design stage of long-span bridges and provide the necessary reference for aerodynamic shape optimization by modifying the local geometric features of the cross-section.

The vector form intrinsic finite (VFIFE) method is a new and promising structural analysis technique that has many advantages as compared with the conventional finite element method (FEM) in analyzing the complex behaviors of a structure. However, despite the popularization of its application in civil and infrastructure engineering, there is no available unified general analysis framework for it, which limits the applications and developments of VFIFE. This work develops and implements a platform (termed openVFIFE) based on a new proposed object-oriented framework to facilitate the development and application of the vector form intrinsic finite method as well as the efficient and accurate analyses of complex behaviors for civil structures. To validate the platform, a series of numerical examples are conducted. Furthermore, to extend the applications of VFIFE, the nonlinear dynamic and collapse processes of a transmission tower under earthquake load are studied using openVFIFE. The results of these numerical examples simulated by the developed truss or beam elements are consistent with theoretical solutions, previous research or conventional finite element models. The failure modes of the transmission tower under earthquake load simulated by the platform is consistent with those observed in real cases. In addition, the results of nonlinear dynamic analyses of the transmission tower show that the computational efficiency of the proposed platform is 6-10 times higher than that of the conventional finite element method. The results provide sufficient evidence to prove the accuracy and efficiency of the proposed platform in the static, dynamic and elastoplastic analyses of truss and frame structures, especially in the structure analysis characterized by strong geometry nonlinearity. It is noteworthy that in addition to the link and beam elements, further work is undergoing on implementing more elements, such as shell and solid elements. The openVFIFE also allows researchers who are interested in this topic to put their creative ideas into this platform and continuously improve the completeness and applicability of the VFIFE method.

The determination of the final cable shape under the self-weight of the suspension bridge enables its safe construction and operation. Most existing studies solve the cable shape segment-by-segment in the Lagrangian coordinate system. This paper develops a novel shape finding method for the main cable of suspension bridge using nonlinear finite element approach with Eulerian description. The governing differential equations for a three-dimensional spatial main cable is developed before a one-dimensional linear shape function is introduced to solve the cable shape utilizing the Newton iteration method. The proposed method can be readily reduced to solve the two-dimensional parallel cable shape. Two iteration layers are required for the proposed method. The shape finding process has no need for the information of the cable material or cross section using the present technique. The commonly used segmental catenary method is compared with the present method using three cases study, i.e., a 1666-m-main-span earth-anchored suspension bridge with 2D parallel and 3D spatial main cables as well as a 300-m-main-span self-anchored suspension bridge with 3D spatial main cables. Numerical studies and iteration results show that the proposed shape finding technique is sufficiently accurate and operationally convenient to achieve the target configuration of the main cable.

Wind-induced damage during the construction process and the evolution of damage over time are important reasons for the wind-induced destruction of large cooling towers. In fact, wind vibration coefficient and stability performance will evolve with the construction height and material properties over time. However, the existing studies generally ignore the impact of wind load and structural performance during the construction period. In this study, we built the 3D physical model separately for all eight construction stages a super large cooling tower which is being currently constructed and stands 210 m. The dynamic characteristics of the cooling tower were analyzed in each stage. First, the flow field information and 3D time history of aerodynamic forces were obtained for the whole construction process using large eddy simulation (LES). Full transient dynamic finite element analysis was used to calculate the dynamic responses of the tower under the real-time changes of wind loads during the whole construction process. Five calculation methods were used to trace the evolution of wind vibration coefficient during the whole construction process of the super large cooling tower. Then the formula for wind vibration coefficient changing with the construction height was fitted. The differential values of wind vibration coefficient during the whole construction process of the cooling tower were discussed by taking the meridional axial force as the objective function. On this basis, the influence and working mechanism of wind vibration coefficient, concrete age, construction load, geometric nonlinearity, internal suction force on buckling stability, and ultimate bearing capacity of the cooling towers were investigated. This research provides an enhanced understanding on the evolution of wind-induced stability performance in super large cooling towers and a methodology to prevent wind-induced damage during the construction process.

In this study, the influence of two critical geometrical parameters (i.e., angles of wind fairing, α; and lower inclined web, β) in the aerodynamic performance of closed-box girder bridges was systematically investigated through conducting a theoretical analysis and wind tunnel testing using laser displacement sensors. The results show that, for a particular inclined web angle β, a closed-box girder with a sharper wind fairing angle of α = 50° has better flutter and vortex-induced vibration (VIV) performance than that with α = 60°, while an inclined web angle of β = 14° produces the best VIV performance. In addition, the results from particle image velocimetry (PIV) tests indicate that a wind fairing angle of α = 50° produces a better flutter performance by inducing a single vortex structure and a balanced distribution of the strength of vorticity in both upper and lower parts of the wake region. Furthermore, two-dimensional three-degrees-of-freedom (2D-3DOF) analysis results demonstrate that the absolute values of Part A (with a reference of flutter derivative A2*) and Part D (with a reference of A1*H3*) generally decrease with the increase of β, while the change of the participation level of heaving degrees of freedom (DOF) in torsion-dominated coupled flutter initially increases, reaches its peak, and then decreases with the increase of β.
