For safety issues in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), international standards and regulations for various abusive environments have been developed, and UL1642 in Underwriters Laboratories (UL) currently covers electrical, mechanical, environmental, and fire exposure tests. An impact test is one of mechanical abuse tests in UL1642, which aims to determine the safe prevention of fire or explosion. As the energy density of a lithium-ion battery is continuously increasing, it is difficult to pass the regulation. Therefore, it is necessary to predict failure mode due to an internal short circuit in developing high-capacity cells. For a sudden and measured mechanical force, we speculate that damage to a separator consisting of LIBs makes the battery experience an exothermic phenomenon due to an internal short circuit because a separator is a key component for preventing the electrical contact between two electrodes. Therefore, if we can find mechanical stresses of each component in LIBs, we can evaluate whether each component is severely damaged or not. In the present study, we propose a finite element model consisting of a multi-layered structure, which will permit us to assess the possible onset location of the short circuit, and to predict the sequence of failure at a cell level. We applied the proposed method to a cylindrical cell, and the accuracy of the model was verified through the comparison of the experiment results. Additionally, simulation results showed that it is possible to track mechanical stress variations of each component progressively. Furthermore, we performed the numerical experiment evaluating the thickness effect of a center-pin. We expect the proposed finite element model to be used in order to devise cell level abuse-tolerant design from a mechanical point of view before conducting mechanical abuse tests as part of the product development process.

Metals created by melting basic metal and welding rods in welding operations are referred to as weld beads. The weld bead shape allows the observation of pores and defects such as cracks in the weld zone. Radiographic testing images are used to determine the quality of the weld zone. The extraction of only the weld bead to determine the generative pattern of the bead can help efficiently locate defects in the weld zone. However, manual extraction of the weld bead from weld images is not time and cost-effective. Efficient and rapid welding quality inspection can be conducted by automating weld bead extraction through deep learning. As a result, objectivity can be secured in the quality inspection and determination of the weld zone in the shipbuilding and offshore plant industry. This study presents a method for detecting the weld bead shape and location from the weld zone image using image preprocessing and deep learning models, and extracting the weld bead through image post-processing. In addition, to diversify the data and improve the deep learning performance, data augmentation was performed to artificially expand the image data. Contrast limited adaptive histogram equalization (CLAHE) is used as an image preprocessing method, and the bead is extracted using U-Net, a pixel-based deep learning model. Consequently, the mean intersection over union (mIoU) values are found to be 90.58% and 85.44% in the train and test experiments, respectively. Successful extraction of the bead from the radiographic testing image through post-processing is achieved.

Floating cranes are used for the construction and installation work of harbors, various heavy industries, and offshore structures. In the case of floating cranes that need to move around the work site, their navigation can be constrained due to marine bridges. In some cases, the clearance under the bridge between the water surface and the bottom of the marine bridge may be too low, and floating cranes cannot pass under the marine bridge. In this study, the height of the marine bridges and the boom height of the floating cranes considering the minimum luffing angle were investigated. Through minimizing the boom luffing angle of the floating crane by the height of back tower, a floating crane with improved mobility through marine bridges was developed. A structural analysis model was produced to check whether the developed crane design satisfies the design criteria obeying the KR, DNVGL, and ABS rules, including luffing condition as a special consideration. As a result of the structural analyses, structural safety was validated for the service, stowage, and luffing conditions in terms of combined stresses, displacements, and buckling.
