Liriomyza trifolii is a significant invasive pest that targets horticultural and vegetable crops, causing large-scale outbreaks characterized by pronounced thermotolerance and insecticide resistance. This study examined the impact of long-term selection for abamectin resistance during the larval stage of L. trifolii on its population dynamics and thermal tolerance. We conducted a comprehensive comparison between the abamectin-resistant strain (AB-R) and the susceptible strain (S), including age-stage, two-sex life table analysis, thermal preference (Tpref), critical thermal maximum (CTmax), heat knockdown times (HKDTs), eclosion and survival rates, and LtHsp expression under heat stress. Our results showed that while selection for abamectin resistance was detrimental to survival and reproduction, it activated self-defense mechanisms and rapid adaptive adjustments and conferred modest thermal tolerance, which suggests a dual nature of insecticide effects. The AB-R strain exhibited significantly higher thermal preference and CTmax values, along with a longer HKDT and improved survival. Additionally, there was a significant upregulation of LtHsp expression in the AB-R strain compared to the S strain. These findings indicate that the evolution of thermal adaptation was accompanied by abamectin resistance development, emphasizing the necessity of considering temperature effects when applying chemical control. Our study provides valuable insights into how physiological acclimation may help mitigate the toxic effects of insecticides and illustrate how insects respond to multiple environmental pressures.

Hatchery rearing significantly influences the phenotypic development of fish, with potential adverse effects for the post-release performance of hatchery-reared individuals in natural environments, especially when targeted for stock enhancement. To assess the suitability of releasing hatchery-reared fish, a comprehensive understanding of the phenotypic effects of captive rearing, through comparisons with their wild conspecifics, is essential. In this study, we investigated the divergence in body coloration between wild and hatchery-reared marbled rockfish Sebastiscus marmoratus. We examined the selection preferences for different light colors and assessed the impact of different ambient light colors on the morphological color-changing ability of juvenile marbled rockfish. Our findings revealed significant differences in body color between wild and hatchery-reared marbled rockfish. The hue and saturation values of wild marbled rockfish were significantly higher than those of their hatchery-reared counterparts, indicative of deeper and more vibrant body coloration in the wild population. Following a ten-day rearing period under various light color environments, the color of wild marbled rockfish remained relatively unchanged. In contrast, hatchery-reared marbled rockfish tended to change their color, albeit not reaching wild-like coloration. Light color preference tests demonstrated that wild juvenile marbled rockfish exhibited a preference for a red-light environment, while hatchery-reared individuals showed a similar but weaker response. Both wild and hatchery-reared marbled rockfish displayed notable negative phototaxis in the presence of yellow and blue ambient light. These results highlight the impact of hatchery rearing conditions on the body color and morphological color-changing ability, and provide insight into light color selection preferences of marbled rockfish. To mitigate the divergence in phenotypic development and produce more wild-like fish for stocking purposes, modifications to the hatchery environment, such as the regulation of ambient light color, should be considered.

Bemisia tabaci (Gennadius) is one of the most important invasive species in China, with strong insecticide resistance and thermotolerance. In this study, we investigated the effects of elevated temperature on the tolerance of B. tabaci MEMA1 to abamectin (AB) and thianethixam (TH) insecticides. We firstly cloned two new CYP450 genes from B. tabaci MEAM1, including one CYP6 family gene (BtCYP6k1) and one CYP305 family gene (BtCYP305a1). The expression patterns of the two BtCYP450 genes were compared in response to high-temperature stress and insecticide exposure, and RNAi was then used to demonstrate the role that these two genes play in insecticide tolerance. The results showed that expression of the two BtCYP450 genes could be induced by exposure to elevated temperature or insecticide, but this gene expression could be inhibited to a certain extent when insects were exposed to the combined effects of high temperature and insecticide treatment. For AB treatment, the expression of the two BtCYP450 genes reached the lowest level when insects were exposed to a temperature of 41 °C and treated with AB (combined effects of temperature and insecticide). In contrast, TH treatment showed a general decrease in the expression of the two BtCYP450 genes with exposure to elevated temperatures. These findings suggest that insecticide tolerance in B. tabaci MEAM1 could be mediated by high temperatures. This study provides a prospective method for the more effective application of insecticides for the control of B. tabaci in the field.

The resolving power of metalens telescopes rely on their aperture size. Flat telescopes are advancing with the research on super-resolution confocal metalenses with large aperture. However, the aperture sizes of metalenses are usually bound within hundreds of micrometers due to computational and fabrication challenges, limiting their usage on practical optical devices like telescopes. In this work, we demonstrated a two-step designing method for the design of dual-band far-field super-resolution metalens with aperture sizes from the micro-scale to macro-scale. By utilizing two types of inserted unit cells, the phase profile of a dual-wavelength metalens with a small aperture of 100 μm was constructed. Through numerical simulation, the measured FWHM values of the focal spots of 5.81 μm and 6.81 μm at working wavelengths of 632.8 nm and 1265.6 nm were found to all be slightly smaller than the values of 0.61 λ/NA, demonstrating the super-resolution imaging of the designed metalens. By measuring the optical power ratio of the focal plane and the incident plane, the focusing efficiencies were 76% at 632.8 nm and 64% at 1265.6 nm. Based on the design method for small-aperture metalens, far-field imaging properties through the macro metalens with an aperture of 40 mm were simulated by using the Huygens–Fresnel principle. The simulation results demonstrate confocal far-field imaging behavior at the target wavelengths of 632.8 nm and 1265.6 nm, with a focal length of 200 mm. The design method for dual-band far-field super-resolution metalens with a large aperture opens a door towards the practical applications in the dual-band space telescope system.

Titanium has a low density and high corrosion resistance. In order to achieve the goal of a lightweight material, and to extend the normal working hour of proton-exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs), ultra-thin titanium plates were chosen to manufacture the key components—bipolar plates (BPs). For the purpose of overcoming the challenges of manufacturing with a large depth to width ratio, a multi-stage formation process was established with characteristics such as high efficiency and a lower price. In this study, the process parameters were examined through an experimental approach. The outcomes show that the channel formed by multistage forming is deeper than that formed by single-stage forming under the same displacement conditions. To achieve greater flow depths, it is recommended to increase the displacements as much as possible during both the first- and second-stage forming processes. The implementation of three-stage forming can effectively reduce the maximum thinning rates within flow channels while improving the overall deformation uniformity. This method deviates from traditional one-stage loading processes by adopting multi-stage loading instead. By employing appropriate mold designs, material deformation and flow can be enhanced throughout gradual loading processes, thereby preventing strain concentration and enhancing the ultimate formation height accuracy within micro-flow channels. Consequently, the proposed three-stage forming process proves highly appropriate for the mass production of BPs utilizing titanium plates.

Particle counting serves as a pivotal constituent in diverse analytical domains, encompassing a broad spectrum of entities, ranging from blood cells and bacteria to viruses, droplets, bubbles, wear debris, and magnetic beads. Recent epochs have witnessed remarkable progressions in microfluidic chip technology, culminating in the proliferation and maturation of microfluidic chip-based particle counting methodologies. This paper undertakes a taxonomical elucidation of microfluidic chip-based particle counters based on the physical parameters they detect. These particle counters are classified into three categories: optical-based counters, electrical-based particle counters, and other counters. Within each category, subcategories are established to consider structural differences. Each type of counter is described not only in terms of its working principle but also the methods employed to enhance sensitivity and throughput. Additionally, an analysis of future trends related to each counter type is provided.

Biofilm-associated infections exert more severe and harmful attacks on human health since they can accelerate the generation and development of the antibiotic resistance of the embedded bacteria. Anti-biofilm materials and techniques that can eliminate biofilms effectively are in urgent demand. Therefore, we designed a type I photosensitizer (TTTDM) with an aggregation-induced emission (AIE) property and used F-127 to encapsulate the TTTDM into nanoparticles (F-127 AIE NPs). The NPs exhibit highly efficient ROS generation by enhancing intramolecular D–A interaction and confining molecular non-radiative transitions. Furthermore, the NPs can sufficiently penetrate the biofilm matrix and then detect and eliminate mature bacterial biofilms upon white light irradiation. This strategy holds great promise for the rapid detection and eradication of bacterial biofilms.

Leak monitoring is essential for the intelligent operation and maintenance of marine systems, and can effectively prevent catastrophic accidents on ships. In response to this challenge, a machine vision-based leak model is proposed in this study and applied to leak detection in different types of marine system in complex engine room environments. Firstly, an image-based leak database is established, and image enhancement and expansion methods are applied to the images. Then, Standard Convolution and Fast Spatial Pyramid Pooling modules are added to the YOLOv5 backbone network to reduce the floating-point operations involved in the leak feature channel fusion process, thereby improving the detection speed. Additionally, Bottleneck Transformer and Shuffle Attention modules are introduced to the backbone and neck networks, respectively, to enhance the feature representation performance, select critical information for the leak detection task, and suppress non-critical information to improve detection accuracy. Finally, the proposed model’s effectiveness is verified using leak images collected by the ship’s video system. The test results demonstrate that the proposed model exhibits excellent recognition performance for various types of leak, especially for drop-type leaks (for which the accuracy reaches 0.97).

The pH of saline–alkali soil is high because of carbonate salts, and the deleterious effects of saline–alkali soil on the growth of plants are greater than those of saline soil. Few studies have examined the saline–alkali tolerance of Betula platyphylla at the molecular level. To clarify the regulatory mechanism underlying saline–alkali tolerance in B. platyphylla, RNA sequencing analysis of B. platyphylla seedlings treated with NaHCO3 was conducted. Differences in gene expression in the roots of B. platyphylla seedlings under saline–alkali stress (induced via NaHCO3) for 3 h and 6 h were characterized, and a total of 595 and 607 alkali stress-responsive genes were identified, respectively. Most differentially expressed genes were involved in stress, signal transduction, secondary metabolic process, regulation of jasmonic acid, and the abiotic stimulus signaling pathway. The single nucleotide polymorphism loci in the differentially expressed genes were associated with the alkaline-salt tolerance in birch germplasm. In addition, birch plants overexpressing WRKY70 and NAC9 were obtained using the A. tumefaciens-mediated transient transformation method, and these two genes were found to play key roles in saline–alkali tolerance. Additional study revealed that WRKY70 and NAC9 can increase resistance to saline–alkali stress by enhancing reactive oxygen species scavenging and inhibiting cell death in birch plants. The results of this study enhance our understanding of the saline–alkali stress tolerance of B. platyphylla at the molecular level, and provide several key genes that could be used in the breeding of birch plants in the future.

The composition of marine aerosol is quite complex, and its sources are diverse. Across the East China Sea (ECS) and the Yellow Sea (YS), multi-dimensional analysis of marine aerosols was conducted. The characteristics of carbonaceous aerosols and gaseous pollutants were explored through in situ ship-based observation, MERRA-2 reanalysis datasets and TROPOMI data from Sentinel-5P satellite. Black carbon (BC)’s average concentration is 1.35 ± 0.78 μg/m3, with high-value BC observed during the cruise. Through HYSPLIT trajectory analysis, sources of BC were from the northern Eurasian continent, the Shandong Peninsula, the ECS and Northwest Pacific Ocean (NWPO). The transport of marine sources like ship emissions cannot be ignored. According to the absorption Angstrom exponent (AAE), BC originates from biomass burning (BB) in the shortwave band (~370 nm) and from fossil fuel combustion in the longwave band (~660 nm). Organic carbon (OC), sulfate (SO42−) and BC report higher Angstrom exponent (AE) while dust and sea salt reveal lower AE, which can be utilized to classify the aerosols as being fine- or coarse-mode, respectively. OC has the highest AE (ECS: 1.98, YS: 2.01), indicating that anthropogenic activities could be a significant source. The process of biomass burning aerosol (BBA) mixed with sea salt could contribute to the decline in BBA’s AE. Ship emissions may affect the distribution of tropospheric nitrogen dioxide (NO2) in the ECS, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. Tropospheric NO2 over the YS has the highest value (up to 12 × 1015 molec/cm2). Stratospheric NO2 has a ladder-like distribution from north to south, and the variation gradient was lower than that in the troposphere. Carbon monoxide (CO) accumulates in the south and east of the ECS and the east of the YS, while the variation over the eastern YS is relatively frequent. Seas near the Korean Peninsula have extremely high CO concentration (up to 1.35 × 1017 molec/cm2).

Anti-sliding piles are commonly implemented to reinforce landslides. Considering the complex nature of this medium, there is substantial spatial variability in the mechanical parameters of rock and soil masses. However, the influence of spatial variability on the anti-sliding pile remains unclear. In this study, the Erdaogou landslide is taken as a case study in terms of the random response of anti-sliding piles considering spatial variability. Based on comprehensive on-site investigations, various numerical calculations were conducted for the comparative analysis, involving stability analysis and the reliability evaluation of the Erdaogou landslide. The results show that treating mechanical parameters of sliding masses as random variables could result in the probability of overestimating landslide failure, leading to the squandering of supporting materials. Specifically, the coefficient of variation has the greatest influence on failure probability, and the vertical scale of fluctuation showed a larger impact on reliability than that of the horizontal scale of fluctuation. As for the rotation anisotropy, the failure probability fluctuated with the increase in the rotation angle. Taking spatial variability into account, pile top displacements and maximum bending moments tower above those obtained via stability analysis. The related studying methods could provide guidance for the optimal design of anti-sliding piles and the threat control of landslides.

The ice-templated method (ITM) has drawn significant attention to the improvement of the electrochemical properties of various materials. The ITM approach is relatively straightforward and can produce hierarchically porous structures that exhibit superior performance in mass transfer, and the unique morphology has been shown to significantly enhance electrochemical performance, making it a promising method for energy storage and conversion applications. In this review, we aim to present an overview of the ITM and its applications in the electrochemical energy storage and conversion field. The fundamental principles underlying the ITM will be discussed, as well as the factors that influence the morphology and properties of the resulting structures. We will then proceed to comprehensively explore the applications of ITM in the fabrication of high-performance electrodes for supercapacitors, batteries, and fuel cells. We intend to find the key advances in the use of ITM and evaluate its potential to overcome the existing challenges in the development of efficient energy storage and conversion systems.

Metallic bipolar plates (BPPs) are key components in the proton-exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC), which can replace traditional fossil fuels as a kind of clean energy. However, these kinds of plates, characterized by micro-channels with a high ratio between depth and width, are difficult to fabricate with an ultra-thin metallic sheet. Then, ultrasonic-vibration-assisted stamping is performed considering the acoustic softening effect. Additionally, the influence of various vibration parameters on the forming quality is analyzed. The experimental results show that ultrasonic vibration can obviously increase the channel depth. Among the vibration parameters, the vibration power has the maximum influence on the depth, the vibration interval time is the second, and the vibration duration time is the last. In addition, the rolling direction will affect the channel depth. When the micro-channels are parallel to the rolling direction, the depth of a micro-channel is the largest. This means that the developed ultrasonic-vibration-assisted stamping process is helpful for improving the forming limitation of micro-channels used for the bipolar plates in PEMFC.

Betula platyphylla Suk (Asian white birch) is an economically important tree species in the paper-pulping and biofuel industries. To investigate the mechanism of wood formation at the metabolic level, we evaluated metabolic responses associated with tension-wood formation. Four-year-old trees were subjected to artificial bending treatment for 6 weeks. The xylem growth rate of tension wood (TW) was significantly faster than that of opposite wood (OW), and it exhibited a higher cellulose content. Metabolomics analysis was performed on metabolites of TW, OW and normal wood (NW), and 183 metabolites were identified, of which levels of 142 were altered between groups. Metabolites related to fatty-acid and amino-acid metabolism, the glycolytic pathway, and the metabolism of fructose, mannose and starch sucrose were abundant in TW. Glucose 1-phosphoric acid, fructose and mannose associated with tension-wood development were elevated. Levels of xylitol and ribosol (related to the conversion of glucose), coniferol (the main monomer of lignin) and shikimic acid (an intermediate in lignin synthesis) were decreased in TW. These metabolites are likely involved in xylem development.

Due to the characteristics of inductance parameter mismatch and back electromotive force harmonics caused by novel leakage flux branches and other non-ideal factors for the variable-leakage-flux permanent magnet (VLF-PM) motor, its control system suffers from a deteriorated performance of the rotor position estimation. To overcome the problems mentioned above, an adaptive tracking estimator of the rotor position is proposed in this paper for the VLF-PM motor control system. First, the proposed method simplifies the VLF-PM motor mathematical model and reduces the effect of inductance parameter variations according to the active flux concept. Then, robust and gradient descent algorithms are utilized to maintain the robustness of inductance parameter variations and eliminate the specific order harmonics owing to the novel leakage flux branches. Meanwhile, the accuracy and stability are enhanced. Furthermore, the position compensation based on the current adaptive tracking strategy is proposed to compensate the rotor position error caused by other non-ideal factors. Finally, the feasibility of the proposed estimated system is verified.

The effective antiviral agents that treat severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) are urgently needed around the world. The 3C-like protease (3CLpro) of SARS-CoV-2 plays a pivotal role in virus replication; it also has become an important therapeutic target for the infection of SARS-CoV-2. In this work, we have identified Darunavir derivatives that inhibit the 3CLpro through a high-throughput screening method based on a fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) assay in vitro. We found that the compounds 29# and 50# containing polyphenol and caffeine derivatives as the P2 ligand, respectively, exhibited favorable anti-3CLpro potency with EC50 values of 6.3 μM and 3.5 μM and were shown to bind to SARS-CoV-2 3CLpro in vitro. Moreover, we analyzed the binding mode of the DRV in the 3CLpro through molecular docking. Importantly, 29# and 50# exhibited a similar activity against the protease in Omicron variants. The inhibitory effect of compounds 29# and 50# on the SARS-CoV-2 3CLpro warrants that they are worth being the template to design functionally improved inhibitors for the treatment of COVID-19.

Drought stress is a common adverse environment that plants encounter, and many drought-tolerant genes have been characterized. The gene regulatory network (GRN) is important in revealing the drought tolerance mechanism. Here, to investigate the regulatory mechanism of Shanxin poplar (Populus davidiana × P. bolleana) responding to drought stress, a three-layered GRN was built, and the regulatory relationship between genes in the GRN were predicted from expression correlation using a partial correlation coefficient-based algorithm. The GRN contains 1869 regulatory relationships, and includes 11 and 19 transcription factors (TFs) in the first and second layers, respectively, and 158 structural genes in the bottom layers involved in eight enriched biological processes. ChIP-PCR and qRT-PCR based on transient transformation were performed to validate the reliability of the GRN. About 88.0% of predicted interactions between the first and second layers, and 82.0% of predicted interactions between the second and third layers were correct, suggesting that the GRN is reliable. Six TFs were randomly selected from the top layer for characterizing their function in drought, and all of these TFs can confer drought tolerance. The important biological processes related to drought tolerance were identified, including “response to jasmonic acid”, “response to oxidative stress”, and “response to osmotic stress”. In this GRN, PdbERF3 is predicted to play an important role in drought tolerance. Our data revealed the key regulators, TF-DNA interactions, and the main biological processes involved in adaption of drought stress in Shanxin poplar.

Due to the special aerodynamic layout and mass distribution, the natural frequency differences between the hybrid wing body (HWB)’s rigid-body motion modes and the fuselage structure elastic modes are smaller compared to conventional aircraft, resulting in the disappearance of the decoupling relationship between the HWB’s rigid-body motion and the elastic motion of the airframe structure. For the above reason, the traditional analysis approach based on the rigid-body assumption is no longer applicable when analyzing the flight dynamics of an HWB aircraft, and a shift must be made to an analysis method that takes into account aeroelastic effects. Therefore, in this paper, a time-domain co-simulation program combining the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) method with computational structure dynamics (CSD) and rigid-body dynamics (RBD) is developed to investigate the effect of a rigid–elastic coupling effect on the flight dynamics of the HWB and this co-simulation method is more advantageous in the calculation of unsteady aerodynamics compared to existing methods of rigid–elastic coupling dynamics analysis. By means of the co-simulation technology, this paper completed a series of simulations, based on which the influence of rigid–elastic coupling effect on the short-period dynamic characteristics of aircraft was studied.

With the increasing prevalence of drug-resistant variants, novel potent HIV-1 protease inhibitors with broad-spectrum antiviral activity against multidrug-resistant causative viruses are urgently needed. Herein, we designed and synthesized a new series of HIV-1 protease inhibitors with phenols or polyphenols as the P2 ligands and a variety of sulfonamide analogs as the P2′ ligands. A number of these new inhibitors showed superb enzymatic inhibitory activity and antiviral activity. In particular, inhibitors 15d and 15f exhibited potent enzymatic inhibitory activity in the low picomolar range, and the latter showed excellent activity against the Darunavir-resistant HIV-1 variant. Furthermore, the molecular modeling studies provided insight into the ligand-binding site interactions between inhibitors and the enzyme cavity, and they sparked inspiration for the further optimization of potent inhibitors.

Salt and drought are considered two major abiotic stresses that have a significant impact on plants. Plant NAC (NAM, ATAF1/2, and CUC2) transcription factors (TFs) have been shown to play vital roles in plant development and responses to various abiotic stresses. ThNAC4, a NAC gene from Tamarix hispida involved in salt and osmotic stress tolerance, was identified and characterized in this study. According to a phylogenetic study, ThNAC4 is a member of NAC subfamily II. Subcellular localization analysis showed that ThNAC4 is located in the nucleus, and transcriptional activation experiments demonstrated that ThNAC4 is a transcriptional activator. Transgenic Arabidopsis plants overexpressing ThNAC4 exhibited improved salt and osmotic tolerance, as demonstrated by improved physiological traits. ThNAC4-overexpressing and ThNAC4-silenced T. hispida plants were generated using the transient transformation method and selected for gain- and loss-of-function analysis. The results showed that overexpression of ThNAC4 in transgenic Tamarix and Arabidopsis plants increased the activities of antioxidant enzymes (SOD, POD, and GST) and osmoprotectant (proline and trehalose) contents under stress conditions. These findings suggest that ThNAC4 plays an important physiological role in plant abiotic stress tolerance by increasing ROS scavenging ability and improving osmotic potential.

The extension of aft-body fuselage has become an important trend in the design of Hybrid Wing Body (HWB) civil aircraft due to its improved effect on flight control authority of aircraft. However, it is still unclear how efficient the extension of aft-body will be in improving flight control authority and how it affects other aspects of the flight performance of HWB. To address these problems, this paper evaluated and compared the flight performances of four HWB configurations with different aft-body lengths. A physics-based Multidiscipline Design Optimization (MDO) platform was firstly constructed, and four optimal design works were developed based on this platform, with different static margin constraints. The configurations to be studied came from the results of the four optimization design works, which presented different aft-body lengths under the influence of correspondence between static stability margins and aft-body layout. By investigating these four HWB configurations with the weight, basic takeoff and landing performance, and flight control authority, we can determine the influence of the aft-body extension design on the performances of the HWB civil aircraft and provide advice for the layout design of the HWB aircraft.

As a global health problem, liver fibrosis still does not have approved treatment. It was proved that N-(3,4,5-trichlorophenyl)-2(3-nitrobenzenesulfonamide) benzamide (IMB16-4) has anti-hepatic fibrosis activity. However, IMB16-4 displays poor water solubility and poor bioavailability. We are devoted to developing biodegraded liposome-coated polymeric nanoparticles (LNPs) as IMB16-4 delivery systems for improving aqueous solubility, cellular uptake, and anti-fibrotic effects. The physical states of IMB16-4−LNPs were analyzed using a transmission electron microscope (TEM), high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and differential scanning calorimeter (DSC). The results show that IMB16-4−LNPs increased the drug loading compared to liposomes and enhanced cellular uptake behavior compared with IMB16-4−NPs. In addition, IMB16-4−LNPs could repress the expression of hepatic fibrogenesis-associated proteins, indicating that IMB16-4−LNPs exhibited evident anti-fibrotic effects.

To ensure the high-quality output performance of the five-phase fault-tolerant permanent magnet synchronous motor (FTPMSM) drive system under normal and open-circuit faults and achieve the minimal reconfiguration of the FTPMSM control drive system under various open-circuit faults, in this paper, a fault-tolerant field-oriented control (FOC) strategy based on disturbance adaption is proposed. The speed-loop and current-loop steady-healthy controllers are designed to effectively suppress the torque ripples caused by open-circuit faults and improve the robustness of the drive system to load disturbance and motor parameter variation under fault operation. Moreover, the additional zero-sequence current controller can be omitted. In addition, the modified reduced-order coordinate transformation matrices are proposed to weaken the influence of oscillating neutral. Finally, the fault-tolerant FOC system of the FTPMSM is established, and its experiment is conducted. The experimental results verify the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed control strategy.

In this paper, a novel high isolation and high-capacitance-ratio radio-frequency micro-electromechanical systems (RF MEMS) switch working at Ka-band is designed, fabricated, measured and analyzed. The proposed RF MEMS switch mainly consists of a MEMS metallic beam, coplanar waveguide (CPW) transmission line, dielectric layer and metal–insulator–metal (MIM) fixed capacitors. The measured results indicate that the insertion loss is better than 0.5 dB at 32 GHz, and the isolation is more than 35 dB at the resonant frequency. From the fitted results, the capacitance ratio is 246.3. Compared with traditional MEMS capacitive switches, this proposed MEMS switch exhibits a high capacitance ratio and provides a wonderful solution for cutting-edge performance in 5G and other high-performance applications.

Snow coverage mapping plays a vital role not only in studying hydrology and climatology, but also in investigating crop disease overwintering for smart agriculture management. This work investigates snow coverage mapping by learning from Sentinel-2 satellite multispectral images via machine-learning methods. To this end, the largest dataset for snow coverage mapping (to our best knowledge) with three typical classes (snow, cloud and background) is first collected and labeled via the semi-automatic classification plugin in QGIS. Then, both random forest-based conventional machine learning and U-Net-based deep learning are applied to the semantic segmentation challenge in this work. The effects of various input band combinations are also investigated so that the most suitable one can be identified. Experimental results show that (1) both conventional machine-learning and advanced deep-learning methods significantly outperform the existing rule-based Sen2Cor product for snow mapping; (2) U-Net generally outperforms the random forest since both spectral and spatial information is incorporated in U-Net via convolution operations; (3) the best spectral band combination for U-Net is B2, B11, B4 and B9. It is concluded that a U-Net-based deep-learning classifier with four informative spectral bands is suitable for snow coverage mapping.

To assess water quality (WQ) online for assuring the safety of drinking water, a novel early warning system integrating a high-frequency monitoring system (HFMS) and data quality control (QC) was developed at Lake Qiandao. The HFMS was designed for monitoring water quality, nutrient inputs by main tributaries, water currents and meteorology at different sites at Lake Qiandao. The EWS focused on data availability, a QC method, a statistical analysis method and data applications instead of technological aspects for sondes, wireless data transfer and interface software development. QC was implemented before use to delete the abnormal values of outliers, to detect change points, to analyse the change trend, to interpolate discrete missing measurements, and find continuous missing or wrong observations caused by technical problems with the sonde. For demonstrating advantages and data availability, surface and profiling measurements at two sites were plotted. The plots show obvious seasonal and diel variations, demonstrating the success of integration of the system with advanced automated technology and good QC. This successfully developed system is now not only giving early warning signals, but also providing critical WQ information for the security of drinking water diverted to Hangzhou city through a tunnel of 110 km length. The automatic monitoring data with QC is also being used to produce initial conditions for WQ prediction based on a three dimensional hydrodynamic-ecosystem model.

Liver fibrosis is challenging to treat because of the lack of effective agents worldwide. Recently, we have developed a novel compound, N-(3,4,5-trichlorophenyl)-2(3-nitrobenzenesulfonamido) benzamide referred to as IMB16-4. However, its poor aqueous solubility and poor oral bioavailability obstruct the drug discovery programs. To increase the dissolution, improve the oral bioavailability and enhance the antifibrotic activity of IMB16-4, PVPK30 was selected to establish the IMB16-4 nanoparticles. Drug release behavior, oral bioavailability, and anti-hepatic fibrosis effects of IMB16-4 nanoparticles were evaluated. The results showed that IMB16-4 nanoparticles greatly increased the dissolution rate of IMB16-4. The oral bioavailability of IMB16-4 nanoparticles was improved 26-fold compared with that of pure IMB16-4. In bile duct ligation rats, IMB16-4 nanoparticles significantly repressed hepatic fibrogenesis and improved the liver function. These findings indicate that IMB16-4 nanoparticles will provide information to expand a novel anti-hepatic fibrosis agent.

In the context of the COVID-19 epidemic, enhancing the transport of analyte to a sensor surface is crucial for rapid detection of biomolecules since common conditions, including low diffusion coefficients, cause inordinately long detection times. Integrated microfluidic immunoassay chips are receiving increasing attention for their low sample volume and fast response time. We herein take advantage of asymmetric ICEO flow at a bipolar sinusoidal electrode to improve the rate of antibody binding to the reaction surface based on finite element modeling. Three different microfluidic cavities are proposed by changing the positions of the surface reaction area. We further investigate the relationship between binding enhancement and reaction surface positions, Damkohler number, and the voltage and frequency of the AC signal applied to the driving electrodes. Furthermore, the influence of the AC signal applied to the sinusoidal bipolar electrode on antigen–antibody-binding performance is studied in detail. Above all, the simulation results demonstrate that the microfluidic immune-sensor with a sinusoidal bipolar electrode could not only significantly improve the heterogeneous immunoassays but also enable efficient enhancement of assays in a selected reaction region within the micro-cavity, providing a promising approach to a variety of immunoassay applications, such as medical diagnostics and environmental and food monitoring.

In this paper a high capacitance ratio and low actuation voltage RF MEMS switch is designed and fabricated for Ka band RF front-ends application. The metal-insulator-metal (MIM) capacitors is employed on a signal line to improve the capacitance ratio, which will not degrade the switch reliability. To reduce the actuation voltage, a low spring constant bending folding beam and bilateral drop-down electrodes are designed in the MEMS switch. The paper analyzes the switch pull-in model and deduces the elastic coefficient calculation equation, which is consistent with the simulation results. The measured results indicated that, for the proposed MEMS switch with a gap of 2 μm, the insertion loss is better than −0.5 dB and the isolation is more than −20 dB from 25 to 35 GHz with an actuation voltage of 15.8 V. From the fitted results, the up-state capacitance is 6.5 fF, down-state capacitance is 4.3 pF, and capacitance ratios is 162. Compared with traditional MEMS capacitive switches with dielectric material Si3N4, the proposed MEMS switch exhibits high on/off capacitance ratios of 162 and low actuation voltage.

Due to the different geological conditions and construction methods associated with different projects, rockbursts in deep-buried tunnels often present different precursor characteristics, bringing major challenges to the early warning of rockbursts. To adapt to the complexity of engineering, it is necessary to review the latest advancements in rockburst early warning and to discuss general early warning methods. In this article, first, microseismic monitoring and localization methods applicable under tunneling construction are reviewed. Based on the latest engineering examples and research progress, the microseismic evolution characteristics of the rockburst formation process are summarized, and the formation process and mechanism of structure-type and delayed rockbursts are analyzed. The different methods for predicting the risk and level of rockbursts using microseismic indices are reviewed, and the implementation methods and application cases for predicting potential rockburst areas and rockburst probability based on a mechanical model are expounded. Finally, combined with the new practice in early warning methods, development directions for the early warning of rockbursts are put forward.

Liver fibrosis remains a significant public health problem. However, few drugs have yet been validated. Costunolide (COS), as a monomeric component of the traditional Chinese medicinal herb Saussurea Lappa, has shown excellent anti-fibrotic efficacy. However, COS displays very poor aqueous solubility and poor stability in gastric juice, which greatly limits its application via an oral administration. To increase the stability, improve the dissolution rate and enhance the anti-liver fibrosis of COS, pH-responsive mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) were selected as a drug carrier. Methacrylic acid copolymer (MAC) as a pH-sensitive material was used to coat the surface of MSNs. The drug release behavior and anti-liver fibrosis effects of MSNs-COS-MAC were evaluated. The results showed that MSNs-COS-MAC prevented a release in the gastric fluid and enhanced the dissolution rate of COS in the intestinal juice. At half the dose of COS, MSNs-COS-MAC still effectively ameliorated parenchymal necrosis, bile duct proliferation and excessive collagen. MSNs-COS-MAC significantly repressed hepatic fibrogenesis by decreasing the expression of hepatic fibrogenic markers in LX-2 cells and liver tissue. These results suggest that MSNs-COS-MAC shows great promise for anti-liver fibrosis treatment.

In recent years, surface electromyography (sEMG)-based human–computer interaction has been developed to improve the quality of life for people. Gesture recognition based on the instantaneous values of sEMG has the advantages of accurate prediction and low latency. However, the low generalization ability of the hand gesture recognition method limits its application to new subjects and new hand gestures, and brings a heavy training burden. For this reason, based on a convolutional neural network, a transfer learning (TL) strategy for instantaneous gesture recognition is proposed to improve the generalization performance of the target network. CapgMyo and NinaPro DB1 are used to evaluate the validity of our proposed strategy. Compared with the non-transfer learning (non-TL) strategy, our proposed strategy improves the average accuracy of new subject and new gesture recognition by 18.7% and 8.74%, respectively, when up to three repeated gestures are employed. The TL strategy reduces the training time by a factor of three. Experiments verify the transferability of spatial features and the validity of the proposed strategy in improving the recognition accuracy of new subjects and new gestures, and reducing the training burden. The proposed TL strategy provides an effective way of improving the generalization ability of the gesture recognition system.

New drugs with novel antibacterial targets for Gram-negative bacterial pathogens are desperately needed. The protein LpxC is a vital enzyme for the biosynthesis of lipid A, an outer membrane component of Gram-negative bacterial pathogens. The ACHN-975 molecule has high enzymatic inhibitory capacity against the infectious diseases, which are caused by multidrug-resistant bacteria, but clinical research was halted because of its inflammatory response in previous studies. In this work, the structure of the recombinant UDP-3-O-(R-3-hydroxymyristol)-N-acetylglucosamine deacetylase from Aquifex aeolicus in complex with ACHN-975 was determined to a resolution at 1.21 Å. According to the solved complex structure, ACHN-975 was docked into the AaLpxC’s active site, which occupied the site of AaLpxC substrate. Hydroxamate group of ACHN-975 forms five-valenced coordination with resides His74, His226, Asp230, and the long chain part of ACHN-975 containing the rigid alkynyl groups docked in further to interact with the hydrophobic area of AaLpxC. We employed isothermal titration calorimetry for the measurement of affinity between AaLpxC mutants and ACHN-975, and the results manifest the key residues (His74, Thr179, Tyr212, His226, Asp230 and His253) for interaction. The determined AaLpxC crystal structure in complex with ACHN-975 is expected to serve as a guidance and basis for the design and optimization of molecular structures of ACHN-975 analogues to develop novel drug candidates against Gram-negative bacteria.

Background: Liver fibrosis, as a common and refractory disease, is challenging to treat due to the lack of effective agents worldwide. Recently, we have developed a novel compound, N-(3,4,5-trichlorophenyl)-2(3-nitrobenzenesulfonamide) benzamide (IMB16-4), which is expected to have good potential effects against liver fibrosis. However, IMB16-4 is water-insoluble and has very low bioavailability. Methods: Mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) were selected as drug carriers for the purpose of increasing the dissolution of IMB16-4, as well as improving its oral bioavailability and inhibiting liver fibrosis. The physical states of IMB16-4 and IMB16-4-MSNs were investigated using nitrogen adsorption, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), HPLC, UV-Vis, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Results: The results show that MSNs enhanced the dissolution rate of IMB16-4 significantly. IMB16-4-MSNs reduced cytotoxicity at high concentrations of IMB16-4 on human hepatic stellate cells LX-2 cells and improved oral bioavailability up to 530% compared with raw IMB16-4 on Sprague–Dawley (SD) rats. In addition, IMB16-4-MSNs repressed hepatic fibrogenesis by decreasing the expression of hepatic fibrogenic markers, including α-smooth muscle actin (α-SMA), transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-β1) and matrix metalloproteinase-2 (MMP2) in LX-2 cells. Conclusions: These results provided powerful information on the use of IMB16-4-MSNs for the treatment of liver fibrosis in the future.

The use of lake sedimentary DNA to track the long-term changes in both terrestrial and aquatic biota is a rapidly advancing field in paleoecological research. Although largely applied nowadays, knowledge gaps remain in this field and there is therefore still research to be conducted to ensure the reliability of the sedimentary DNA signal. Building on the most recent literature and seven original case studies, we synthesize the state-of-the-art analytical procedures for effective sampling, extraction, amplification, quantification and/or generation of DNA inventories from sedimentary ancient DNA (sedaDNA) via high-throughput sequencing technologies. We provide recommendations based on current knowledge and best practises.

WRKY proteins are a large family of transcription factors that are involved in diverse developmental processes and abiotic stress responses in plants. However, our knowledge of the regulatory mechanisms of WRKYs participation in protein–protein interactions is still fragmentary, and such protein–protein interactions are fundamental in understanding biological networks and the functions of proteins. In this study, we report that a WRKY protein from Tamarix hispida, ThWRKY4, can form both homodimers and heterodimers with ThWRKY2 and ThWRKY3. In addition, ThWRKY2 and ThWRKY3 can both bind to W-box motif with binding affinities similar to that of ThWRKY4. Further, the expression patterns of ThWRKY2 and ThWRKY3 are similar to that of ThWRKY4 when plants are exposed to abscisic acid (ABA). Subcellular localization shows that these three ThWRKY proteins are nuclear proteins. Taken together, these results demonstrate that ThWRKY4 is a dimeric protein that can form functional homodimers or heterodimers that are involved in abiotic stress responses.

Gibberellin (GA) is a key signal molecule inducing differentiation of tracheary elements, fibers, and xylogenesis. However the molecular mechanisms underlying the effect of GA on xylem elongation and secondary wall development in tree species remain to be determined. In this study, Betula platyphylla (birch) seeds were treated with 300 ppm GA3 and/or 300 ppm paclobutrazol (PAC), seed germination was recorded, and transverse sections of hypocotyls were stained with toluidine blue; the two-month-old seedlings were treated with 50 μM GA3 and/or 50 μM PAC, transverse sections of seedling stems were stained using phloroglucinol–HCl, and secondary wall biosynthesis related genes expression was analyzed by real-time quantitative PCR. Results indicated that germination percentage, energy and time of seeds, hypocotyl height and seedling fresh weight were enhanced by GA3, and reduced by PAC; the xylem development was wider in GA3-treated plants than in the control; the expression of NAC and MYB transcription factors, CESA, PAL, and GA oxidase was up-regulated during GA3 treatment, suggesting their role in GA3-induced xylem development in the birch. Our results suggest that GA3 induces the expression of secondary wall biosynthesis related genes to trigger xylogenesis in the birch plants.

DNA methylation plays a critical role in the regulation of gene expression. Most studies of DNA methylation have been performed in herbaceous plants, and little is known about the methylation patterns in tree genomes. In the present study, we generated a map of methylated cytosines at single base pair resolution for Betula platyphylla (white birch) by bisulfite sequencing combined with transcriptomics to analyze DNA methylation and its effects on gene expression. We obtained a detailed view of the function of DNA methylation sequence composition and distribution in the genome of B. platyphylla. There are 34,460 genes in the whole genome of birch, and 31,297 genes are methylated. Conservatively, we estimated that 14.29% of genomic cytosines are methylcytosines in birch. Among the methylation sites, the CHH context accounts for 48.86%, and is the largest proportion. Combined transcriptome and methylation analysis showed that the genes with moderate methylation levels had higher expression levels than genes with high and low methylation. In addition, methylated genes are highly enriched for the GO subcategories of binding activities, catalytic activities, cellular processes, response to stimulus and cell death, suggesting that methylation mediates these pathways in birch trees.

Protein–protein interactions are important for the molecular understanding of the biological processes of proteins. The dimerization of bZIPs (basic leucine zipper proteins) is involved in modifying binding site specificities, altering dimer stability, and permitting a new set of specific protein-to-protein interactions to occur at the promoter. In the present study, we studied the whether ThbZIP1 form homo- and heterodimers using the yeast two-hybrid method. Five bZIP genes were cloned from Tamarix hispida to investigate their interaction with ThbZIP1. Our results showed that ThbZIP1 can form homodimers with itself, and three out of five bZIPs could interact with the ThbZIP1 protein to form heterodimers. Real-time RT-PCR results suggested that these ThbZIPs can all respond to abiotic stresses and abscisic acid (ABA), and shared very similar expression patterns in response to NaCl, ABA or PEG6000. Subcellular localization studies showed that all ThbZIPs are targeted to the nucleus. Our results showed that ThbZIP1 are dimeric proteins, which can form homo- or heterodimers.

Plant specific NAC (NAM, ATAF1/2 and CUC2) transcription factors (TFs) play important roles in response to abiotic stress. In this study, we identified and characterized a NAC protein, ThNAC7, from Tamarix hispida. ThNAC7 is a nuclear localized protein and has transcriptional activation activity. ThNAC7 expression was markedly induced by salt and osmotic stresses. Transiently transformed T. hispida seedlings overexpressing ThNAC7 (OE) or with RNA interference (RNAi) silenced ThNAC7 were generated to investigate abiotic stress tolerance via the gain- and loss- of function. Overexpressing ThNAC7 showed an increased reactive oxygen species (ROS) scavenging capabilities and proline content, which was accomplished by enhancing the activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and peroxidase (POD) in transiently transformed T. hispida and stably transformed Arabidopsis plants. Additionally, ThNAC7 activated these physiological changes by regulating the transcription level of P5CS, SOD and POD genes. RNA-sequencing (RNA-seq) comparison between wild-type and ThNAC7-transformed Arabidopsis showed that more than 40 known salt tolerance genes might regulated by ThNAC7, including stress tolerance-related genes and TF genes. The results indicated that ThNAC7 induces the transcription level of genes associated with stress tolerance to enhance salt and osmotic stress tolerance via an increase in osmotic potential and enhanced ROS scavenging.

Gene expression profiles are powerful tools for investigating mechanisms of plant stress tolerance. Betula platyphylla (birch) is a widely distributed tree, but its drought-tolerance mechanism has been little studied. Using RNA-Seq, we identified 2917 birch genes involved in its response to drought stress. These drought-responsive genes include the late embryogenesis abundant (LEA) family, heat shock protein (HSP) family, water shortage-related and ROS-scavenging proteins, and many transcription factors (TFs). Among the drought-induced TFs, the ethylene responsive factor (ERF) and myeloblastosis oncogene (MYB) families were the most abundant. BpERF2 and BpMYB102, which were strongly induced by drought and had high transcription levels, were selected to study their regulatory networks. BpERF2 and BpMYB102 both played roles in enhancing drought tolerance in birch. Chromatin immunoprecipitation combined with qRT-PCR indicated that BpERF2 regulated genes such as those in the LEA and HSP families, while BpMYB102 regulated genes such as Pathogenesis-related Protein 1 (PRP1) and 4-Coumarate:Coenzyme A Ligase 10 (4CL10). Multiple genes were regulated by both BpERF2 and BpMYB102. We further characterized the function of some of these genes, and the genes that encode Root Primordium Defective 1 (RPD1), PRP1, 4CL10, LEA1, SOD5, and HSPs were found to be involved in drought tolerance. Therefore, our results suggest that BpERF2 and BpMYB102 serve as transcription factors that regulate a series of drought-tolerance genes in B. platyphylla to improve drought tolerance.

An efficient one-pot synthesis of 1,6-diamino-2-oxo-1,2,3,4-tetrahydro- pyridine-3,5-dicarbonitrile derivatives by four-component piperidine-catalyzed reactions of a ketone, malononitrile, ethyl cyanoacetate and hydrazine hydrate under ultrasound irradiation is described. This method provides several advantages such as shorter reaction times, excellent yields, and a simple workup procedure.

A concise and efficient synthesis of acenaphtho[1,2-b]indole derivatives via the domino reactions of enaminones with acenaphthoquinone catalyzed by l-proline has been developed. This protocol has the advantages of good yields, operational convenience and high regioselectivity.

NAC (NAM, ATAF1/2, and CUC2) transcription factors play important roles in many biological processes, and mainly bind to the NACRS with core sequences “CACG” or “CATGTG” to regulate gene expression. However, whether NAC proteins can bind to other motifs without these core sequences remains unknown. In this study, we employed a Transcription Factor-Centered Yeast one Hybrid (TF-Centered Y1H) screen to study the motifs recognized by ANAC074. In addition to the NACRS core cis-element, we identified that ANAC074 could bind to MybSt1, NRS1, and NRS2. Y1H and GUS assays showed that ANAC074 could bind the promoters of ethylene responsive genes and stress responsive genes via the NRS1, NRS2, or MybSt1 element. ChIP study further confirmed that the bindings of ANAC074 to MybSt1, NRS1, and NRS2 actually occurred in Arabidopsis. Furthermore, ten NAC proteins from different NAC subfamilies in Arabidopsis thaliana were selected and confirmed to bind to the MybSt1, NRS1, and NRS2 motifs, indicating that they are recognized commonly by NACs. These findings will help us to further reveal the functions of NAC proteins.

Methylammonium lead halide perovskites have attracted extensive attention for optoelectronic applications. Carrier transport in perovskites is obscured by vacancy-mediated ion migration, resulting in anomalous electronic behavior and deteriorated reliability of the devices. In this communication, we demonstrate that ion migration can be significantly enhanced by doping additional mobile I- ions into the perovskite bulk. Ionic confinement structures of vertical metal oxide semiconductor (MOS) and lateral metal semiconductor metal (MSM) diodes designed to decouple ion-migration/accumulation and electronic transport are fabricated and characterized. Measurement conditions (electric-field history, scan rate and sweep frequency) are shown to affect the electronic transport in perovskite films, through a mechanism involving ion migration and accumulation at the block interfaces. Prominent zero-point drifts of dark current-voltage curves in both vertical and lateral diode are presented, and further varied with the perovskite film containingthe different iodine-lead atomic ratio. The doped perovskite has a large ion current at grain boundaries, offering a large ion hysteresis loopand zero drift value. The results confirmthat the intrinsic behavior of perovskite film is responsible for the hysteresisof the optoelectronic devices, but also paves the way for potential applications in many types of devices including memristors and solid electrolyte batteries by doping the native species (I− ions) in perovskite film.

Abscisic acid (ABA) plays a crucial role in plant responses to abiotic stress. To investigate differences in plant responses to salt and ABA stimulus, differences in gene expression in Arabidopsis in response to salt and ABA were compared using an Agilent oligo microarray. A total of 144 and 139 genes were significantly up- and downregulated, respectively, under NaCl stress, while 406 and 381 genes were significantly up- and downregulated, respectively, under ABA stress conditions. In addition, 31 genes were upregulated by both NaCl and ABA stresses, and 23 genes were downregulated by these stressors, suggesting that these genes may play similar roles in plant responses to salt and ABA stress. Gene ontology (GO) analysis revealed four subgroups of genes, including genes in the GO categories “Molecular transducer activity”, “Growth”, “Biological adhesion” and “Pigmentation”, which were expressed in response to ABA stress but not NaCl stress. In addition, genes that play specific roles during salt or ABA stress were identified. Our results may help elucidate differences in the response of plants to salt and ABA stress.

An improved synthesis of multifunctionalized pyrrolo[2,3,4-kl]acridine derivatives with different substituted patterns using silica sulfuric acid (SSA) as a heterogeneous catalyst under microwave irradiation conditions was developed. The reaction could be conducted by using readily available and inexpensive substrates within short periods of 12–15 min. under microwave irradiation. Compared with the conventional methods, the remarkable advantages of this method are milder reaction conditions, operational simplicity, higher yields, short reaction times, and an environmentally friendly procedure.

A series of novel dispirooxindoles have been synthesized through three-component 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition of azomethine ylides generated in situ by the decarboxylative condensation of isatin and an α-amino acid with the dipolarophile 5-benzylidene-1,3-dimethylpyrimidine-2,4,6-trione. This method has the advantages of mild reaction conditions, high atom economy, excellent yields, and high regio- and stereo-selectivity.

Cellulose synthase (CESA), which is an essential catalyst for the generation of plant cell wall biomass, is mainly encoded by the CesA gene family that contains ten or more members. In this study; four full-length cDNAs encoding CESA were isolated from Betula platyphylla Suk., which is an important timber species, using RT-PCR combined with the RACE method and were named as BplCesA3, −4, −7 and −8. These deduced CESAs contained the same typical domains and regions as their Arabidopsis homologs. The cDNA lengths differed among these four genes, as did the locations of the various protein domains inferred from the deduced amino acid sequences, which shared amino acid sequence identities ranging from only 63.8% to 70.5%. Real-time RT-PCR showed that all four BplCesAs were expressed at different levels in diverse tissues. Results indicated that BplCESA8 might be involved in secondary cell wall biosynthesis and floral development. BplCESA3 appeared in a unique expression pattern and was possibly involved in primary cell wall biosynthesis and seed development; it might also be related to the homogalacturonan synthesis. BplCESA7 and BplCESA4 may be related to the formation of a cellulose synthase complex and participate mainly in secondary cell wall biosynthesis. The extremely low expression abundance of the four BplCESAs in mature pollen suggested very little involvement of them in mature pollen formation in Betula. The distinct expression pattern of the four BplCesAs suggested they might participate in developments of various tissues and that they are possibly controlled by distinct mechanisms in Betula.
