Recycled Concrete Aggregate (RCA) of the chemical and biological effects must be understood to avoid potential adverse impacts to the bay’s aquatic ecosystem. RCA application as a base material for oyster reefs did not adversely affect oyster spat growth and survival, or the surrounding environment. Evaluated RCA leaching for petroleum byproducts showed that RCA as a base material for oyster reefs did not leach any hydrocarbon chemicals, and no water extractable SVOC were detected. The research found potential RCA application to the Chesapeake Bay watershed as a bottom conditioning material for oyster aquaculture. Overall, the findings support the use of RCA for oyster aquaculture.

This research investigates the potential of utilizing recycled concrete aggregate (RCA) and recycled sand (RS), derived from crushed concrete cubes, as sustainable alternatives in construction materials. The study comprehensively evaluates the properties of RCA and RS, focusing on workability, impact resistance, abrasion resistance, and compressive strength to determine their viability as substitute construction materials. A notable finding is RS’s enhanced fire and heat resistance when used as a fine aggregate in mortar blends, mixed with cement and Sinicon PP in a 3:1 ratio. The experimental analysis included thorough assessments of uniformity, durability, and curing time, alongside Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) for structural examination. Results show that RCA has an Aggregate Impact Value (AIV) of 5.76% and a Los Angeles Abrasion Value (LAA) of 21.78%, demonstrating excellent strength of the recycled aggregates. The mortar mix was also prepared using recycled sand, cement, and Sinicon PP, and its stability was confirmed through soundness tests, which resulted in a 0.53 mm expansion and a satisfactory consistency level of 44%. Ultrasonic pulse velocity (UPV) tests also indicated high-quality concrete formation using RCA and RS. SEM imaging corroborated this by revealing a bond between the cement paste and the aggregates. Incorporating RS and RCA in concrete mixtures impressively yielded a compressive strength of 26.22 N/mm2 in M20-grade concrete. The study concludes that using RCA and RS waste materials in the construction sector underlines that sustainable practices can be integrated without compromising material quality. This approach aligns with sustainable development goals and fosters a more environmentally friendly construction industry.

To solve the problems on resource utilization and environmental pollution of waste concrete and waste polypropylene (PP) plastics, the recycling of them into asphalt pavement is a feasible approach. Considering the high melting temperature of waste PP, this study adopted a thermal-and-mechanochemical method to convert waste PP into high-performance warm-mix asphalt modifiers (PPMs) through the hybrid use of dicumyl peroxide (DCP), maleic anhydride (MAH), and epoxidized soybean oil (ESO) for preparing an asphalt mixture (RCAAM) containing recycled concrete aggregate (RCA). For the prepared RCAAM containing PPMs, the mixing temperature was about 30 °C lower than that of the hot-mix RCAAM containing untreated PP. Further, the high-temperature property, low-temperature crack resistance, moisture-induced damage resistance, and fatigue resistance of the RCAAM were characterized. The results indicated that the maximum flexural strain of the RCAAM increased by 7.8~21.4% after using PPMs, while the sectional fractures of the asphalt binder were reduced after damaging at low temperature. The use of ESO in PPMs can promote the cohesion enhancement of the asphalt binder and also improve the high-temperature deformation resistance and fatigue performance of the RCAAM. Notably, the warm-mix epoxidized PPMA mixture worked better close to the hot-mix untreated PPMA mixture, even after the mixing temperature was reduced by 30 °C.

To reduce the environmental impact of concrete, recycled aggregates are of significant interest. Recycled concrete aggregate (RCA) presents a significant resource opportunity, although its performance as an aggregate in concrete is variable. This study presents a meta-analysis of the published literature to refine the understanding of how the moisture content of RCA, as well as other parameters, affects the compressive strength of concrete. Seven machine learning models were used to predict the compressive strength of concrete with RCA, including linear regression, support vector regression (SVR), and k-nearest neighbors (KNN) as single models, and decision tree, random forest, XGBoost, and LightGBM as ensemble models. The results of this study demonstrate that ensemble models, particularly the LightGBM model, exhibited superior prediction accuracy compared to single models. The LightGBM model yielded the highest prediction accuracy with R2 = 0.94, RMSE = 4.16 MPa, MAE = 3.03 MPa, and Delta RMSE = 1.4 MPa, making it the selected final model. The study, employing feature importance with LightGBM as the final model, identified age, water/cement ratio, and fine RCA aggregate content as key factors influencing compressive strength in concrete with RCA. In an interaction plot analysis using the final model, lowering the water–cement ratio consistently improved compressive strength, especially between 0.3 and 0.4, while increasing the fine RCA ratio decreased compressive strength, particularly in the range of 0.4 to 0.6. Additionally, it was found that maintaining moisture conditions of RCA typically between 0.0 and 0.8 was crucial for maximizing strength, whereas extreme moisture conditions, like fully saturated surface dry (SSD) state, negatively impacted strength.

Product sustainability has moved beyond being an elective preference to becoming a certain necessity. However, earthquakes in different regions, particularly Türkiye–Syria, Afghanistan, and Morocco, have produced a substantial amount of construction waste and debris. In the context of green urban initiatives and environmental preservation, theeffective management and reduction of environmental impact (EI) are imperative. This urgency underscores the significance of the study’s focus on a ten-story reinforced concrete (RC) dormitory building in Győr, Hungary, chosen as a case study. The research delves into the incorporation of three distinct concrete compositions through seismic design, aligning with the innovative approach of emphasizing recycled aggregate-based concrete to mitigate the EI. Utilizing AxisVM X7 and Revit software, the study meticulously created and analyzed a detailed building model, revealing a significant percentage (35%) and amount (1519.89 tons) of concrete waste that could be incorporated into construction. The results also showed a reduction in both total carbon emissions and the price of materials by falling 27.5% and 9.13%, respectively. We propose an eco-friendly way to effectively reuse debris from earthquakes, focusing on the case study of the 2023 Türkiye–Syria earthquake and encouraging resource efficiency while also addressing the construction waste problems that arise after an earthquake.

The objective of this research is to develop an innovative methodology for evaluating the quality of coarse aggregate mixes that incorporate recycled concrete aggregate for use in structural concrete. The proposed approach consists of three steps: measuring the packing density, quantifying the adhered mortar, and characterizing the mechanical resistance of the aggregate mixes containing both natural and recycled concrete aggregate. Comprehensive practical recommendations for each step are discussed in detail to facilitate the broader future utilization of recycled concrete aggregate in structural concrete. The mechanical resistance of aggregate mixes is significantly influenced by both packing density and the quantity of adhered mortar. Predictive models are used to illustrate the mechanical resistance of aggregate mixes based on packing density and adhered mortar amount, recognizing the direct correlation between these properties.

The replacement of virgin aggregate with recycled concrete aggregate (RCA) in concrete mixtures offers an eco-strategy to mitigate the environmental limitations linked with traditional recycling techniques of RCA. However, the inferior properties of RCA, in contrast to virgin aggregate, present an obstacle to efficiently proceeding with this approach. Therefore, the aim of this study is to enhance the characteristics of concrete that contains RCA using nano-ZnO particles. Virgin aggregate was replaced with RCA in 30 wt.% and 50 wt.% ratios, followed by the addition of 0.5 wt.% nano-ZnO. The performance of concrete mixtures was evaluated in terms of their physical, mechanical, and durability properties. The addition of nano-ZnO particles to concrete with RCA resulted in refining its pore structure and reducing its water absorption, where the impermeability of concrete with 30 wt.% and 50 wt.% treated RCA decreased by 14.5% and 18%, respectively. Moreover, nano-ZnO treatment increased the compressive strength of mixtures with 30 wt.% and 50 wt.% RCA by 2.8% and 4%, respectively. All mixtures underwent a reduction in their 28-day compressive strength after exposure to a 5% sulphuric acid solution, where concrete with 30 wt.% and 50 wt.% RCA showed 20.2% and 22.8% strength loss, respectively. However, there was a 17.6% and 19.6% drop in the compressive strength of concrete with 30 wt.% and 50 wt.% RCA and treated with nano-ZnO.

This study considers 12 pervious concrete mixes incorporating 100% recycled coarse aggregate from old concrete demolition waste and containing various amounts of natural fine aggregate and date palm leaves fibers. First, the properties of the recycled aggregate in terms of their particle size distribution, abrasion resistance, crushing values, specific gravity and water absorption are obtained. Next, the pervious concrete density, compressive strength, tensile strength, permeability and porosity are determined by experimental testing following the relevant standards. The results are analyzed and compared to determine the influence of using recycled coarse aggregate in the mixtures and the impact of the amount of natural sand and volume fraction of the fibers on the mechanical properties, permeability and porosity of the concrete. Findings of the study showed that the use of recycled coarse aggregate in pervious concrete without fine aggregate reduced the compressive strength by 36% and tensile strength by 57%. Replacing 11.7% of the recycled coarse aggregate with natural sand and adding date palm leaves fibers in an amount equivalent to 0.64% volumetric content to such concrete helped increase the compressive strength by 16.2% and tensile strength by 3.2% above the corresponding strengths of the control mix. There is a clear relationship between permeability and porosity due to their correlation with the density of pervious concrete, and the effect of porosity on tensile strength is more influential than it is on the compressive strength. An equation that can predict the tensile strength of pervious concrete from the compressive strength is proposed, as a function of the natural fine aggregate fraction of the coarse aggregate and volumetric content of natural fibers. Results of the research confirm the feasibility of using recycled aggregate in pervious concrete mixes and the positive impact of natural fibers on the mechanical properties.

The research presented in this article was conducted to evaluate the suitability of recycled foam concrete (RFC) as an ingredient in newly created cement mortars. The basis for an analysis was the assumption that the waste is collected selectively after separation from other waste generated during demolition. The motivation for the research and its main problem is a comparison of the performance of RFC used in various forms. RFC was used in two forms: (1) recycled foam concrete dust (RFCD) as a 25 and 50% replacement of cement, and (2) recycled foam concrete fine aggregate (RFCA) as a 10, 20, and 30% replacement of sand. The basic properties of fresh and hardened mortars were determined: consistency, density, initial setting time, absorbability, compressive strength, thermal conductivity coefficient, and heat capacity. Research is complemented with SEM observations. The properties of fresh mortars and mechanical parameters were decreased with the usage of any dosage of RFC in any form, but the thermal properties were improved. The required superplasticizer amount for proper consistency was raised four times for replacing cement with 50% of RFCD than for 25% of such replacement. The mix density dropped by about 8% and 9% for mortars with the replacement of 50% cement by RFCD and 30% sand by RFCA in comparison to reference mortar. A 30% decrease in initial setting time was observed for cement replacement. In the case of sand replacement, it was the opposite—an increase of 100%. The dry density decreased by about 14% and 11% for mortars with the replacement of 50% cement by RFCD and 30% sand by RFCA in comparison to reference mortar. Absorbability was raised by about two times after replacement with both RFCD and RFCA. Compressive strength after 28 days dropped significantly by 75% and 60%, and the thermal conductivity coefficient decreased by 20% and 50% with 50% RFCD added instead of cement and 30% RFCA replacing sand. It indicates greater efficiency in thermomechanical means from RFCA in comparison to RFCD. This material can be used especially in the production of plaster and masonry mortar. Linear correlations of dry density and thermal conductivity coefficient and the latter and compressive strength were proven as reliable for RFCD replacement of cement and RFCA replacement of sand in mortars with greater w/c ratio.

In this study, an experiment was conducted to innovate a new design of interlocking concrete blocks (ICBs) containing recycled aggregates (RAs) by reducing the consumed time and cost in construction using an environmental approach. Accordingly, the designed ICBs were produced manually using RAs, and wallettes were easily built with a mortarless mechanism by stacking the blocks without any mortar layers. In the experiments, besides the individual compression tests of the two types of ICB with natural and recycled aggregates, the wallette samples that were produced using ICBs, containing either 100% natural aggregates or 100% Ras, were tested under axial compressive loading. The experimental results were assessed considering the compressive strength, displacement, and failure mode. In the obtained results, we noticed that the average compressive strengths of the wallettes that were produced with natural or recycled aggregate ICBs were large enough to meet the standards of Syrian regulations, which are considered an example reference. The resulting displacement values were acceptable and could be negligible in some wallette specimens. It was concluded that the innovative ICBs with both normal or recycled aggregates could be a good alternative to traditional blocks, especially in post-disaster or post-war areas.

The proper reutilization of the phosphogypsum (PG) by-product derived from the production of phosphoric acid and recycled concrete aggregate (RCA) from waste concrete in roadbase materials is of great necessity and importance. This investigation tried seeking a new approach to reuse them to high quality, including turning PG into calcinated PG (CPG) via washing and calcination, as well as adopting sodium metasilicate nonahydrate (SMN) to strengthen the roadbase materials of cement-stabilized CPG and RCA. Upon the mix design, with a series of experiments including unconfined compressive strength, the wet–dry cycle, freeze–thaw cycle, and scanning electron microscopy, the comprehensive effects of PG treatment, the CPG to RCA mix ratio, SMN dosage, wet–dry cycle and freeze–thaw cycle on the road performance of roadbase materials were well evaluated, and the traffic bearing capacity and microstructure characteristics were also analyzed. The results demonstrate that the 7 d unconfined compressive strength of CPG/RCA roadbase materials can reach 5.34 MPa as the CPG and SMN dosage are 20% and 11%, respectively, which meets the requirements of an extremely and very heavy traffic grade. After five wet–dry cycles and freeze–thaw cycles, the resistance of the CPG/RCA roadbase materials to moisture and frost was significantly improved as 11% SMN was added. Meanwhile, SMN contributes to the reduction in crack width and densifies the microstructure of CPG/RCA roadbase materials. The research results can be used to provide new guidance for building more durable roadbase materials.

Microbial treatment of recycled concrete aggregate (RCA) may improve the quality of the aggregate, and enhance its use in the production of structural concrete and promote the recycling of concrete waste. The mortar phase of the RCA is responsible for the poor performance of the aggregate. Treating the old adhered mortar or removing it from the natural aggregate (NA) is an option to make RCA beneficial for the production of quality recycled aggregate concrete (RAC). Removing the adhered mortar from recycled concrete aggregate using silicate-solubilizing bacteria was investigated. The bacteria could synthesize the silicates in the calcium silicate hydrate phase of the cement paste leading to the breakdown of the old adhered mortar. Four SSB strains were tested for survivability and activity in an alkaline medium to simulate the concrete environment. The Serratia marcescens bacterial strain, which survived the environment, was inoculated into screw-cap glass vials containing recycled concrete aggregate fragments and glucose-enhanced nutrient broth and then incubated for 14 days. Partial removal of the old adhered mortar was observed based on the weight lost from the RCA. The S. marcescens bacterial strain could survive the alkaline concrete environment and solubilize the silicates present in cement paste resulting in the removal of the old adhered mortar.

Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) drinking bottles, rubber tires, and concrete are the very common municipal solid wastes, which are usually disposed of at landfills and stockpiles and cause continuous damage to the environment. Some studies have indicated that waste PET can be chemically converted into an additive for improving the overall properties of asphalt pavement incorporating natural aggregates, especially the moisture-induced damage resistance. However, it is not clear whether this PET additive still works for asphalt rubber containing recycled concrete aggregates (RCA). To well reveal this issue, this study first adopted a similar way to chemically recycle waste PET into the additive for modifying crumb rubber modified asphalt (CRMA) binder and then mixed the binder with the 13 mm maximum aggregate stone matrix asphalt containing 100% coarse RCA for preparing the mixtures. After a series of physicochemical characterizations of the PET additive, the moisture resistance, rutting resistance, low-temperature cracking resistance, and fatigue resistance of the mixture were systematically evaluated. The results showed that the PET additive is capable of improving the resistance to moisture and high-temperature deformation of asphalt rubber and helps greatly reduce the moisture-induced damage to the interfacial bonding layer. To be more detailed, the residual Marshall stability (RMS) value of RCA-CRMAM/1PET after 72 h of immersion is higher than 85% by contrast to that of RCA-CRMAM (77.1%), while the tensile strength ratio (TSR) value of RCA-CRMAM/1PET shows more than 80% compared to that of 65.2%. In addition, only 1% PET additive can enhance the high-temperature resistance of asphalt rubber containing RCA to rut and allow it to maintain higher resistance to rut after moisture-induced damage. 1% PET additive can help improve the bearing capacity of RCA-CRMAM under a low-temperature environment and delay its fatigue life at small stresses. Generally, with the successful introduction of PET additives to asphalt rubber containing RCA, more durable and sustainable highway pavement can be produced and applied in practice to alleviate the negative impacts caused by waste PET, waste tire rubber, and waste concrete.

The demand for sustainable construction materials has driven the exploration of various innovative approaches to enhance the properties of concrete for reducing its environmental impact. The present study examines the effects of incorporating recycled concrete aggregate (RCA), slag cement, alccofine, and glass fibers into concrete mixtures. In the present study, it has been observed that recycled concrete aggregate (RCA) exhibits inferior properties, including higher water absorption and poorer performance, when compared to natural coarse aggregate. Various replacement levels of RCA were utilized in this study to assess its impact on concrete performance. Alccofine, a supplementary cementitious material, is used to partially replace the binding material. Additionally, glass fibers were added to enhance the flexural and tensile behavior of the concrete. The concrete mixtures were designed to meet the required strength and durability specifications. A comprehensive testing program was conducted to evaluate the fresh and hardened properties of the concrete. A slump cone test was performed for assessing the workability of fresh concrete. For hardened concrete, compressive strength, flexural strength, and split tensile strength are evaluated. The results demonstrated that incorporating RCA, slag cement, alccofine, and glass fibers into the concrete mixtures improved mechanical properties. The use of RCA led to a reduction in natural resource consumption, namely natural coarse aggregate in concrete. On the other hand, the generated construction and demolition (C&D) waste is used effectively. Portland slag cement (PSC) and alccofine (A) improved the long-term strength of concrete. The addition of glass fibers significantly enhanced the tensile and flexural performance of the concrete, resulting in improved crack resistance and overall performance. This study introduces a novel concept by exploring the potential utilization of recycled concrete aggregate, slag cement, alccofine, and glass fibers in combination as sustainable and high-performance components in concrete mixtures. Previous research has not extensively studied this combination of materials, making it a unique and innovative approach. These findings contribute to the development of eco-friendly construction practices and provide insights for engineers, researchers, and practitioners aiming to incorporate recycled materials and supplementary cementitious materials into concrete construction.

Currently, only 50% of concrete produced from construction and demolition waste is being recycled in Europe. This falls short of the European Union’s target of 70% by 2020. Moreover, this figure only considers coarse fractions (>4 mm), as technical issues arise when using fine fractions. In pursuit of a complete circular life for recycled concrete, this investigation explores the potential use of fine fractions to enhance the physicochemical conditions and reduce the element concentration of acid mine drainage. Two trickling sets were prepared using a filter holder, with acidic waters passing through a layer of recycled concrete aggregates. Results revealed an immediate increase in water pH to neutral levels, a reduction in solution oxidation, and the complete, or near-complete retention, of potentially toxic elements by the substrate (with retention percentages of over 99.9% for Al and Fe, between 43.1% and 61.1% for S, over 91.1% for Zn, and over 99.1% for Cu). The experiment also showed a significant increase in Ca levels (tripling the initial value) and some Mg in the water, which could promote the subsequent precipitation of carbonates and the retention of trace metals. In summary, this study demonstrates the effectiveness of using recycled concrete aggregates in a laboratory setting. Further investigation is necessary to evaluate the feasibility of implementing this technique at the pilot scale.

The literature confirms that fine recycled concrete aggregate (fRCA) can be used as a replacement for natural soil in new concrete, offering many advantages. Despite these advantages, there are also critical barriers to the development of fRCA in new mixes. Among these, the first challenge is the variability of fRCA properties, in both physical, chemical, and mechanical terms. Many individual studies have been carried out on different RCA or fRCA properties, but little investigative work has been performed to analyze their dynamic properties. Therefore, the influence of the non-cohesive fine fraction content of RCA on the dynamic properties of this waste material, when used as a specific anthropogenic soil, has been studied in laboratory conditions, employing a standard resonant column apparatus, as well as piezoelectric elements. In the present research, special emphasis has been placed on the dynamic shear modulus, dynamic damping ratio, small-strain shear modulus, and small-strain damping ratio, as well as shear modulus degradation G(γ)/Gmax, the damping ratio increase D(γ)/Dmin, and the threshold shear strain amplitudes γtl and γtv. Artificially prepared fRCAs with varying fine fraction contents (0% ≤ FF ≤ 30%, within increments of 5%) have been tested at different pressures (p′ = 90, 180, and 270 kPa) and relative densities of Dr > 65%. This study also examined the effect of two tamping-based sample preparation methods, i.e., dry and wet tamping. The results presented herein indicate that the analyzed anthropogenic material, although derived from concrete and produced by human activities, behaves very similarly to natural aggregate when subjected to dynamic loading. The introduction of a fine fraction content to fRCA leads to changes in the dynamic properties of the tested mixture. Concrete material with lower stiffness but, at the same time, with stronger damping properties can be obtained. A fine fraction content of at least 30% is sufficient to cause a significant loss of stiffness and, at the same time, a significant increase in the damping properties of the mixture. This study can serve as a reference for designing fRCA mixtures in engineering applications.

Continuous research efforts have been developed in the literature to raise the sustainability components of the road infrastructure industry, i.e., reduce potential contaminants and augment financial profitability. In this regard, this investigation aims to explore the feasibility of producing Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA) with the inclusion of Recycled Concrete Aggregate (RCA) as a partial substitute for coarse Natural Aggregates (NAs). Thus, four different HMAs were considered, namely HMAs with coarse RCA contents of 0, 15, 30, and 45%. Specifically, the mechanical and sustainability properties of the asphalt mixtures were determined. On the one hand, the Marshall design parameters, resilient modulus, moisture susceptibility, rutting resistance, and fatigue life were addressed as mechanical properties. Meanwhile, regarding the sustainability properties, the environmental impacts and production costs were estimated using the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and the Life Cycle Cost Analysis (LCCA) methodologies, respectively. Consequently, the following conclusions were obtained: (i) as the coarse RCA content increases, the mechanical behavior of the HMA progressively deteriorates; (ii) this decrease in mechanical performance is acceptable up to a 15% RCA of coarse RCA, whereas for higher dosages this alteration is abrupt; and (iii) the RCA only generates sustainability benefits at a 15% replacement amount.

The paper presents the results of tests on concrete with recycled aggregate impregnated with the use of citric acid. Impregnation was carried out in two stages, with a suspension of calcium hydroxide in water (so-called milk of lime) or diluted water glass used as the second impregnant. The mechanical properties of the concrete were carried out: compressive strength, tensile strength and resistance to cyclic freezing. In addition, concrete durability parameters such as water absorption, sorptivity and torrent air permeability were investigated. The tests showed that this type of impregnation did not improve most of the parameters of concrete with impregnated recycled aggregate. The mechanical parameters after 28 days were significantly lower compared to the reference concrete, although after a longer curing period, these differences decreased significantly for some series. The durability parameters of the concrete with impregnated recycled aggregate also deteriorated compared to the reference concrete with the exception of air permeability. The results of the tests carried out indicate that impregnation using water glass in combination with citric acid gives the best results in most cases and that the order in which the impregnation solutions are applied is very important. Tests also showed that the effectiveness of impregnation is very much influenced by the value of the w/c ratio.

The decrease in the quality of recycled aggregate due to an increase in the number of recycling is a primary factor that limits the multi-recycling of concrete. This degradation adversely affects concrete performance; thus, the characteristics of recycled aggregate should be considered during the mix design stage, but little research has taken that into account. This study investigates the effect of the equivalent mortar volume (EMV) mix design on some physical, mechanical and durability properties of concrete made of multiple recycled coarse aggregates at 50% and 100% replacement ratios compared to concrete made by the conventional mix design (CMD). The results showed that the performances of concrete by the CMD decreased with an increasing number of recycling cycles. The properties of EMV-based concrete deteriorated with an increase in the number of recycling cycles at 100% replacement ratio due to poor workability caused by a shortage of fresh mortar. However, at 50% replacement, the EMV-based concrete exhibited similar performance across the three cycles of recycling, as well as improved properties over natural aggregate concrete. This study demonstrated that an appropriate mix design and optimal aggregate replacement ratio can offset the property loss of multiple recycled aggregate concrete.

Large quantities of dredged sediments and recycled concrete materials are generated every year all over the world. The disposal of these large quantities in landfills represents serious environmental problems. Furthermore, high-quality raw materials for construction are depleting, and their use cannot be sustained. The valorization of dredged sediments and recycled concrete materials as alternative construction materials has the potential to reduce the impact of these two issues. In this context, this study aims at investigating the feasibility of using dredged sediments and recycled concrete aggregates as alternative raw material for road subgrade construction. Various mix designs were prepared using dredged sediments and recycled concrete aggregates. The mixes were then treated with quicklime and road binder as specified in the French soil treatment guide. Their physical, mechanical, and geotechnical properties confirmed the feasibility of using recycled concrete aggregates and dredged sediments up to a certain percentage in road subgrade construction. Moreover, they showed that the mixes containing 20% of dredged sediments met road subgrade minimum physical and mechanical properties, such as immediate bearing capacity, unconfined compression strength, indirect tensile strength greater, and UCSI/UCS60 ratio. Finally, leaching tests were conducted to ensure the environmental safety of the various mixes. The results showed that the mixes met the thresholds for their use in road subgrade construction. The feasibility of using dredged sediments and recycled concrete aggregates in foundations and base layers will be studied in future projects.

In the case of concrete sustainability, two main ways are generally discussed: (1) the reduction of natural raw materials and (2) the reduction of emissions related to concrete production. Following the second point, there have not yet been reported clear results. This problem is not given enough attention in present publications. This study brings a general view of this issue and a basic comparison with common concrete and traditional reinforcement. This case study deals with the life cycle analysis of a concrete slab made of recycled aggregate concrete with a fine recycled aggregate. The concrete slab was designed according to the limit states of load-bearing capacity and serviceability, which is based on the experimental verification of recycled aggregate concrete properties. Two different reinforcements are compared: (1) ordinary reinforcement by steel bars and (2) glass fibers. Furthermore, scenarios vary due to the slab thickness and reinforcement percentage. The results show the positive environmental impact of replacing natural sand with a fine recycled aggregate. The reduction of climate change potential can be almost 40% in some cases.

The effect of fine and ultrafine recycled concrete aggregate (RCA) on road construction still lacks investigation. This study investigates the properties of fine and ultrafine RCA, further, the influence of the different proportions of ultrafine RCA on the long-term performance of the designed matrix. The fine and ultrafine RCA are thoroughly characterized. Simultaneously, the mechanical properties, shrinkage properties, and water penetration of the designed matrix are evaluated. The results indicate that RCA shows low density, high porosity, and high water absorption. Furthermore, elevated ultrafine RCA contents result in higher compressive strength of up to 43.14% at 90 days and higher resistance of water penetration of up to 50% at 28 days due to the refined microstructure. However, higher drying shrinkage is observed with higher ultrafine RCA, which is associated with the high water absorption of the ultrafine RCA. The understanding of the utilization of ultrafine RCA in the construction of road base courses has been explored.

The main goal and novelty of this study is to show the transferability of practices and experiences with the use of reclaimed sand worldwide in the case in two different regions, the Czech Republic and India, which is necessary for both regions due to the sand availability (Czech Republic) and illegal sand mining including criminal offences (India). Due to the deteriorating environmental impacts associated with sand mining, finding substitution possibilities for natural sand is becoming more important worldwide. It is realized that the reuse of construction demolition waste concrete is inevitable in the pursuit of circular concrete and cleaner production, envisioned by the United Nations (UN) as the attainment of ensuring sustainable consumption and production patterns (Sustainable Development Goal 12-SDG 12) with an inclusive approach of partnerships to achieve the goal (Sustainable Development Goal 17-SDG 17) for the validation of results. The basic material properties of reclaimed sand were examined, and its impact on the physical, mechanical, and durability properties of concrete with complete replacement of sand was evaluated. Generally, a slight decline in properties of concrete with fine recycled aggregate was found. No significant decrease was found from usage possibility in the point of view of its utilization in specific structures and conditions. The research shows the slight differences of results between the Czech and Indian investigations, which are not essential for the transferability of the results.

Rapid worldwide urbanization and drastic population growth have increased the demand for new road construction, which will cause a substantial amount of natural resources such as aggregates to be consumed. The use of recycled concrete aggregate could be one of the possible ways to offset the aggregate shortage problem and reduce environmental pollution. This paper reports an experimental study of unbound granular material using recycled concrete aggregate for pavement subbase construction. Five percentages of recycled concrete aggregate obtained from two different sources with an originally designed compressive strength of 20–30 MPa as well as 31–40 MPa at three particle size levels, i.e., coarse, fine, and extra fine, were tested for their properties, i.e., the optimum moisture content density, Californian bearing ratio, and resilient modulus. A characterization of the resilient modulus of the mixes under complex stress conditions was performed. The characterized modulus model was used in the nonlinear analysis of the pavement structure under traffic loading using KENALYER software. Consequently, the two critical responses, i.e., the tensile strain at the bottom of the asphalt layer and the vertical compressive strain at the top of the subgrade, were computed and compared for the pavement structures with varying types and percentages of recycled concrete aggregate used in the subbase layer.

An increasing amount of construction and demolishing waste has made the implementation of recycled concrete aggregate (RCA) a popular topic; RCA can reduce the environmental pollution caused by the construction industry. This paper describes differences in physical, mechanical, and chemical properties between RCA and natural aggregate (NA). For the first time, the methods of interfacial transition zone (ITZ) improvement in RCA, including strengthening through carbonation, incorporation of mineral admixtures, and different mixing approaches, are extensively covered. In addition, the methods used to improve the adherent mortar regions of RCA are covered. This approach makes it possible to demonstrate the impact of different methods on these regions (ITZ and adhered mortar) and overall RCA enhancement. Lastly, a comparison of each of these methods in terms of their effectiveness is presented. The review of several studies concludes that the carbonation treatment method for ITZ and adherent mortar enhancement are the most efficient and sustainable methods compared to others. Summarizing, using RCA instead of NA provides a sustainable solution for the construction industry due to reducing the amount of produced waste and conserving landfill space.

This paper presents the mechanical properties of 100% recycled aggregate concrete (RAC), and the results and analysis of the dry–wet cycle accelerated sulfate attack test. The results show that recycled concrete aggregate (RCA) can replace the coarse and fine aggregate. The recycled clay brick aggregate (RCBA) is not suitable for use as a coarse aggregate because the water absorption exceeds the standard. RCA replaces the coarse aggregate; and RCBA returns the fine aggregate to prepare 100% recycled concrete aggregate (RAC). The water–cement ratio is the most significant factor affecting the compressive strength of 100% RAC. The results of the mechanical properties analysis show that the compressive strength of RAC is less than that of NAC, and the difference in compressive strength between 100% RAC and NAC decreases with age. The splitting tensile strength of 100% RAC was slightly higher than that of NAC except for 7 d. The results of the dry–wet cycle accelerated sulfate attack test showed that the performance of 100% RAC was lower than that of NAC under the dry–wet process and sulfate attack coupling. Still, the loss rate was less than 5%, which met the standard resistance to the dry–wet cycle accelerating the sulfate attack.

This research investigated high calcium fly ash geopolymer stabilized recycled concrete aggregate (RCA-FAG) as pavement base material. The effect of recycled concrete aggregate (RCA):high calcium fly ash (FA) ratios, sodium silicate (Na2SiO3):sodium hydroxide (NaOH) ratio, and curing time on the unconfined compressive strength (UCS) and scanning electron microscope (SEM) properties of RCA-FAG samples were evaluated. The maximum dry unit weight of the RCA-FAG sample was 20.73 kN/m3 at RCA:FA ratio of 80:20 and Na2SiO3:NaOH ratio of 60:40. The 7-d UCS of RCA-FAG samples increased as the FA content and Na2SiO3:NaOH ratio increased. The 7-d UCS of the RCA-FAG sample was better than that of the RCA with no FA because FA particles filled in RCA particles, resulting in a dense matrix. The 7-d UCS of RCA-FAG samples passed the 7-d UCS requirement for the low-traffic road. All ingredients met the 7-d UCS requirement for the high-traffic road except the sample with RCA:FA of 100:0 and Na2SiO3:NaOH of 50:50 and 60:40. The 7-d SEM images indicated that spherical FA and RCA particles are bonded together, resulting in the dense matrix for all Na2SiO3:NaOH ratios. The proposed equation for predicting the UCS of RCA-FAG offered a good coefficient of correlation, which is useful in designing pavement base material from RCA-FAG material.

This study investigates the effects of two waste materials from construction and industry, namely recycled concrete aggregate (RCA) and Type C fly ash, on the overall performance of a special type of pavement surface mixture, porous asphalt mixture. Mixtures of different combinations of RCA (for partial aggregate replacement) and fly ash (for filler replacement) were prepared in the laboratory and tested for a variety of pavement surface performance parameters, including air-void content, permeability, Marshall stability, indirect tensile strength, moisture susceptibility, Cantabro loss, macrotexture, and sound absorption. The analysis of the results showed that incorporating RCA or fly ash in a porous asphalt mixture slightly reduced the air-void content, permeability, and surface macrotexture of the mixture. A 10% replacement of granite aggregates with RCA in the porous asphalt mixtures led to a reduction in mixture stability, indirect tensile strength, resistance to raveling, and sound absorption. The further substitution of mineral filler with fly ash in the mixture, however, helped to offset the negative impact of RCA and brought the mechanical properties of the mixture with 10% RCA to levels comparable to those of the control mixture.

Numerous tests are used to determine the performance of concrete, but compressive strength (CS) is usually regarded as the most important. The recycled aggregate concrete (RAC) exhibits lower CS compared to natural aggregate concrete. Several variables, such as the water-cement ratio, the strength of the parent concrete, recycled aggregate replacement ratio, density, and water absorption of recycled aggregate, all impact the RAC’s CS. Many studies have been carried out to ascertain the influence of each of these elements separately. However, it is difficult to investigate their combined effect on the CS of RAC experimentally. Experimental investigations entail casting, curing, and testing samples, which require considerable work, expense, and time. It is vital to adopt novel methods to the stated aim in order to conduct research quickly and efficiently. The CS of RAC was predicted in this research utilizing machine learning techniques like decision tree, gradient boosting, and bagging regressor. The data set included eight input variables, and their effect on the CS of RAC was evaluated. Coefficient correlation (R2), the variance between predicted and experimental outcomes, statistical checks, and k-fold evaluations, were carried out to validate and compare the models. With an R2 of 0.92, the bagging regressor technique surpassed the decision tree and gradient boosting in predicting the strength of RAC. The statistical assessments also validated the superior accuracy of the bagging regressor model, yielding lower error values like mean absolute error (MAE) and root mean square error (RMSE). MAE and RMSE values for the bagging model were 4.258 and 5.693, respectively, which were lower than the other techniques employed, i.e., gradient boosting (MAE = 4.956 and RMSE = 7.046) and decision tree (MAE = 6.389 and RMSE = 8.952). Hence, the bagging regressor is the best suitable technique to predict the CS of RAC.

The use of recycled aggregate concrete is mainly negatively affected by its poorer mechanical and long-term properties. However, there are few structural applications for which recycled aggregates can be used. In this case study, the possibility of use as massive external reinforcement wall is verified. For this structural application, the most important characteristics are freeze–thaw resistance, and carbonation resistance and then the mechanical properties such as compressive strength. Durability characteristics of the materials have been tested and improved in the study. The mechanical properties and durability of recycled aggregated concrete have been verified and crystalline mixture has been used to improve durability. The specific structural application of the massive external reinforcement wall is for the renovation of the Czech WW2 concrete fortification, which is one of the most important cultural heritages of the Czech Republic of the 20th century. However, these buildings have not yet been professionally rebuilt, but this research project aims to change this trend. The thickness of the bunker wall is between 0.5 and 3.5 m (depending on the type of bunker) which leads to a huge amount of concrete and primary resources consumption; however, the security function is not necessary today, so the reconstruction could be provided by recycled aggregate concrete. The results showed a positive effect of the crystalline mixture on the essential properties of recycled aggregate concrete. Recycled aggregate concrete with a complete replacement of aggregate by recycled concrete or masonry aggregate is possible to use for the reconstruction of the Czech WW2 concrete fortification and save natural aggregate as a primary resource.

The main factor that alters the quality of recycled concrete aggregate (RCA) is the paste adhered to the natural aggregate (NA). Since it causes weakening of the interfacial transition zone (ITZ) between the aggregate and the cementitious paste, it becomes a determining factor for the mechanical behavior of concrete. It turns out that it is critical to enhance this interface by improving the surface of the aggregate or by removing the paste adhered to the NA. Considering the variety of methods for removing paste adhered to RCA—namely using acids such as hydrochloric acid (HCl), sulfuric acid (H2SO4), and phosphoric acid (H3PO4), among others—this paper presents a review of treatments for the removal of adhered paste using acidic solutions on the RCA, and their influence on the mechanical properties and durability of concrete produced with RCA. Pearson’s correlation was used in the statistical analysis to determine the linear relationship of the main factors—for instance, immersion time, acidic solution, and aggregate size—involved in the removal of the paste in the RCA.

Concrete is the most widely used building material, but it is also a recognized pollutant, causing significant issues for sustainability in terms of resource depletion, energy use, and greenhouse gas emissions. As a result, efforts should be concentrated on reducing concrete’s environmental consequences in order to increase its long-term viability. In order to design environmentally friendly concrete mixtures, this research intended to create a prediction model for the compressive strength of those mixtures. The concrete mixtures that were used in this study to build our proposed prediction model are concrete mixtures that contain both recycled aggregate concrete (RAC) and ground granulated blast-furnace slag (GGBFS). A white-box machine learning model known as multivariate polynomial regression (MPR) was developed to predict the compressive strength of eco-friendly concrete. The model was compared with the other two machine learning models, where one is also a white-box machine learning model, namely linear regression (LR), and the other is the black-box machine learning model, which is a support vector machine (SVM). The newly suggested model shows robust estimation capabilities and outperforms the other two models in terms of R2 (coefficient of determination) and RMSE (root mean absolute error) measurements.

Most regulations only allow the use of the coarse fraction of recycled concrete aggregate (RCA) for the manufacture of new concrete, although the heterogeneity of RCA makes it difficult to predict the compressive strength of concrete, which is an obstacle to the incorporation of RCA in concrete production. The compressive strength of recycled aggregate concrete is closely related to the dosage of its constituents. This article proposes a novel artificial neural network (ANN) model to predict the 28-day compressive strength of recycled aggregate concrete. The ANN used in this work has 11 neurons in the input layer: the mass of cement, fly ash, water, superplasticizer, fine natural aggregate, coarse natural or recycled aggregate, and their properties, such as: sand fineness modulus of sand, water absorption capacity, saturated surface dry density of the coarse aggregate mix and the maximum particle size. Two training methods were used for the ANN combining 15 and 20 hidden layers: Levenberg–Marquardt (LM) and Bayesian Regularization (BR). A database with 177 mixes selected from 15 studies incorporating RCA were selected, with the aim of having an underlying set of data heterogeneous enough to demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed approach, even when data are heterogeneous and noisy, which is the main finding of this work.

In this paper, the effect of the original aggregate size of the recycled aggregate on the mechanical properties of the recycled aggregate concrete was evaluated. A series of concretes were produced in which natural aggregates, recycled aggregates, and original aggregates in recycled aggregates were matched for a single particle size distribution curve. The replacement levels of recycled aggregate were 25% and 50%, and equivalent mortar volume mix design was applied for recycled aggregate concrete. The results show that the mechanical strength of recycled aggregate concrete increases with increasing original aggregate size. This effect was observed to be greater in concrete using recycled aggregate with a high residual mortar content.

The paper focuses on investigating the effect of impregnation of recycled concrete aggregate on the mechanical and durability properties of concrete using this aggregate. Cement paste, limewater and diluted water glass were used to impregnate the aggregate. Both a single impregnation and a double impregnation using two different solutions were carried out. A total of four groups of concrete series, with two values of w/c ratio (0.45 and 0.60), were made. Concrete made using the impregnated aggregate was tested and the results were compared with those of concrete made using untreated recycled aggregate of the same kind. The results indicate that impregnation of aggregate improves the mechanical properties of concrete in many cases but reduces its resistance to cyclic freezing and thawing. Furthermore, in the case of impregnation with two solutions, the order in which the impregnants are applied influences the effect obtained. Using the results received, the impregnation methods were ranked in order from best to worst. The best impregnation method proved to be with cement paste, followed by diluted water glass, while the worst results were obtained with limewater, followed by diluted water glass.

The reuse of construction and demolition waste is a necessary way to achieve greater sustainability in building, introducing the criteria of the so-called circular economy in the design of the production process of new construction materials. This research focuses on analyzing the properties of mortars made with recycled aggregates from concrete waste and reinforced with aramid fibers. For this purpose, an experimental campaign was carried out, including chemical, physical, mechanical and durability tests, performing a statistical analysis to discuss the different properties analyzed. The results show how the incorporation of aramid fibers in the matrix of cement mortars made with recycled concrete aggregate improves their technical performance and mechanical resistance, thus increasing their application possibilities and achieving similar results in some properties to those obtained with traditional mortars made with natural aggregate.

This study evaluates the performance of alkali-activated slag-fly ash blended concrete made with recycled concrete aggregates (RCA) and reinforced with steel fibers. Two blends of concrete with ground granulated blast furnace slag-to-fly ash ratios of 3:1 and 1:1 were used. Natural aggregates were substituted with RCA, while macro steel fibers with 35 mm of length and aspect ratio of 65 were incorporated in RCA-based mixtures at various volume fractions. Fine aggregates were in the form of desert dune sand. Mechanical and durability characteristics were investigated. Experimental results revealed that RCA replacement decreased the compressive strength of plain concrete mixtures with more pronounced reductions being perceived at higher replacement percentages. Mixtures made with 30%, 70%, and 100% RCA could be produced with limited loss in the design compressive strength upon incorporating 1%, 2%, and 2% steel fibers, by volume, respectively. In turn, splitting tensile strength was comparable to the NA-based control while adding at least 1% steel fiber, by volume. Moreover, higher water absorption and capillary sorptivity and lower ultrasonic pulse velocity, bulk resistivity, and abrasion resistance were reported during RCA replacement. Meanwhile, incorporation of steel fibers densified the concrete and enhanced its resistance to abrasive forces, water permeation, and water transport. Analytical regression models were developed to correlate hardened concrete properties to the 28-day cylinder compressive strength.

This work aims to investigate different predictive models for estimating the unconfined compressive strength and the maximum peak strain of non-structural recycled concretes made up by ceramic and concrete wastes. The extensive experimental campaign carried out during this research includes granulometric analysis, physical and chemical analysis, and compression tests along with the use of the 3D digital image correlation as a method to estimate the maximum peak strain. The results obtained show that it is possible to accurately estimate the unconfined compressive strength for both types of concretes, as well as the maximum peak strain of concretes made up by ceramic waste. The peak strain for mixtures with concrete waste shows lower correlation values.

In the present study, a recycled concrete aggregate (RCA) coating treatment using a cement paste dissociation agent (CPDA) with different mixing methods was newly incorporated in RCA concrete mixtures. First, a preliminary test program was conducted to determine the proper dosage of the CPDA solution throughout its RCA concrete test results from compressive strength, flexural strength, and elastic modulus. Then, a series of experimental tests were carried out to investigate the effect of RCA coating treatment, different mixing method such as the equivalent mortar volume (EMV) method and conventional method, and different RCA replacement ratios on durability test results of RCA concrete such as drying shrinkage values and rapid chloride penetration test (RCPT) values. The test results showed that all RCA concretes mixed with the coated RCAs were found to be workable regardless of different mix methods, with the slump and air contents of all the mixes being almost identical. All the concrete specimens, which were mixed with the coated RCAs with CPDA solution, represented lower drying shrinkage and RCPT values than those mixed without RCA coating treatment, regardless of different mix proportioning methods or RCA replacement ratios. This holds for the concrete specimens proportioned with the EMV method, regardless of different RCA replacement ratios.

The search for environmental preservation and conservation of natural resources gives rise to new concepts and viable technical solutions on the path to sustainable development. In this context, this study’s main objective is to analyse the influence of recycled concrete aggregates (RCAs) on the development of pervious concrete, whose use as a floor covering represents an excellent device to mitigate the urban soil sealing phenomena. For this, mechanical and hydraulic tests were carried out, in addition to microstructural analyses and the assessment of its environmental performance. The results obtained were compared to reference studies also involving the incorporation of recycled aggregates. A pilot-scale case study was conducted, involving a parking space lined with pervious concrete moulded “in situ”. In laboratory tests, permeability coefficients and mechanical strengths compatible with the literature and above the normative limit for light traffic were found. The case study demonstrated higher permeability than in the laboratory, but the flexural strength was lower, being indicated only for pedestrian traffic. The environmental assessment showed that the RCA represents a positive contribution to the environmental performance of pervious concrete. Still, attention should be given to the recycled aggregate transport distance between the concrete plant and the RCA treatment plant.

This article deals with the possibility of utilization of secondary-raw materials as a natural sand replacement in concrete. Four types of waste construction materials were examined—recycled aggregate from four different sources. The natural aggregate was examined as well as used as the reference sample. All the samples were tested to evaluate the water absorption, particle size distribution, and particle density. The basic chemical reactions in the view of ecotoxicology are investigated and measured based on Czech standards. Chemical analysis, Lemna growth inhibition test, freshwater algae, daphnia acute, and mustard germination toxicity test were made and discussed in this paper. Based on the physical and geometrical properties and ecotoxicology of examined waste materials, this work evaluated them as suitable for utilization in concrete as a sand replacement.

Recently, concerns have been rising about the impact of increasing the depletion of natural resources and the relevant generation of construction and demolition waste, on the environment and economy. Therefore, several efforts have been made to promote sustainable efficiency in the construction industry and the use of recycled aggregates derived from concrete debris for new concrete mixtures (leading to so-called recycled aggregate concrete, RAC) is one of the most promising solutions. Unfortunately, there are still gaps in knowledge regarding the durability performances of RAC. In this study, we investigate durability of structural RAC subjected to wet-dry cycles. We analyze the results of an experimental campaign aimed at evaluating the degradation process induced by wetting and drying cycles on the key physical and mechanical properties of normal- and high-strength concrete, produced with coarse recycled concrete aggregates (RCAs) of different sizes and origins. On the basis of the results we propose a degradation law for wetting and drying cycles, which explicitly makes a possible correlation between the initial concrete porosity, directly related to the specific properties of the RCAs and the resulting level of damage obtained in RAC samples.

Sand has been considered to be something of an immeasurable quantity. There are many indications that this view is no longer valid and that the limiting of natural aggregates usage is doubly justified. Firstly, the extraction of natural aggregates is expensive and has a huge impact on the environment. The main issues in sand and gravel mining are the large areas that are affected, ground water level changes, illegal mining, unsuitability of desert and marine sand, and costs of transport. Secondly, metallurgical waste can be used as a substitute for natural aggregates. This is doubly beneficial—the waste is recycled and the use of natural aggregates is reduced. Waste is stored in landfills that take up large areas and there is also the possibility of ground and groundwater pollution by hazardous compounds. The research presented in this article focuses on the technological conditions of using metallurgical waste in its original form and as a component of recycled concrete aggregate (RCA). The use of metallurgical sludge waste or crushed or round RCA to produce concrete deteriorates the consistency and does not significantly affect the air content and density of the concrete mix. RCA lowers the density of hardened concrete. Metallurgical sludge waste or RCA usage adversely affect the absorbability and permeability of concrete. Concrete containing metallurgical sludge waste is of higher compressive strength after 7 and 28 days, with up to 60% of waste as a sand replacement. RCA concrete achieved higher compressive strength also.

The practical use of recycled concrete aggregate produced by crushing concrete waste reduces the consumption of natural aggregate and the amount of concrete waste that ends up in landfills. This study investigated two methods used in the production of fine recycled concrete aggregate: (1) a method that produces fine as well as coarse aggregate, and (2) a method that produces only fine aggregate. Mortar specimens were tested using a variety of mix proportions to determine how the characteristics of fine recycled concrete aggregate affect the physical and mechanical properties of the resulting mortars. Our results demonstrate the superiority of mortar produced using aggregate produced using the second of the two methods. Nonetheless, far more energy is required to render concrete into fine aggregate than is required to produce coarse as well as fine aggregate simultaneously. Thus, the performance benefits of using only fine recycled concrete aggregate must be balanced against the increased impact on the environment.

Creating models based on empirical data and their statistical measurements have been used for a long time in the economic sciences. Increasingly, these methods are used in the technical sciences, such as construction and geotechnical engineering. This allows for reducing the costs of geotechnical research at the design stage. This article presents the research carried out on Recycled Concrete Aggregate (RCA) material with is reclaimed crushed concrete rubble. Permeability tests were carried out using the constant head method. Tests were conducted on blends of RCA with the following particle size ranges: 0.02−16 mm, 0.05−16 mm, 0.1−16 mm, and 0.2−16 mm. The gradients used during the tests were between 0.2 to 0.83, which corresponds to gradients encountered in earth construction and are below the critical gradient. Directly from the tests, the flux velocity for the range of tested gradients were calculated based on filtered water volume measurements. The values of the permeability coefficient (k) were then recalculated. Finally, statistical methods were used to determine which physical parameters of the tested material affect the permeability coefficient. The physical parameters selected from the statistical analysis were used to create a model describing the phenomenon. The model can be used to determine the permeability coefficient for a mixed RCA material. The article ends with conclusions and proposals concerning the use of models and the limits of their applicability.

Recycled aggregates have been widely studied and used in concrete products nowadays. There are still many waste materials that can be used as recycled aggregates other than crushed concrete particles. This paper aims to study the property variations of sustainable concrete paving block incorporating different contents of construction wastes. Five different types of waste materials were used in this project, including: recycled concrete coarse aggregate (RCCA), recycled concrete fine aggregate (RCFA), crushed glass (CG), crumb rubber (CB), and ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBS). According to the test results of the properties of blocks mixed with different levels of wastes materials, it is concluded that adding both RCCA and RCFA in the block can decrease its strength and increase the water absorption. The suggested replacement levels for RCCA and RCFA are 60% and 20%, respectively. Mixing crushed glass in the concrete paving blocks as a type of coarse aggregates can improve the blocks’ strength and decrease the blocks’ water absorption. Addition of crumb rubber causes a significant deterioration of blocks’ properties except for its slip resistance.

Concrete is a building material commonly used for ages. Therefore, in the result of repairs or demolition of building structures, large amounts of concrete rubble are created, which requires appropriate management. The aim of the realized research was to determine the influence of heat and mechanical treatment of concrete rubble on the properties of recycled aggregate concrete. The research experiment included 12 series, with three variables: X1—roasting temperature (300, 600, 900 °C), X2—time of mechanical treatment (5, 10, 15 min), X3—content of coarse recycled aggregates (20, 40, 60% by volume). Two additional series containing recycled aggregate without treatment and natural aggregate were also prepared. Established properties of individual aggregates have confirmed a positive effect of thermo-mechanical treatment. Then, based on the results of compressive strength, flexural strength, Young’s modulus, volumetric density, water absorption, water permeability and capillarity, the most favourable parameters of heat and mechanical treatment of concrete were determined. The test results showed that appropriate treatment of concrete rubble allows to obtain high-quality coarse aggregate and valuable fine fraction. This was also confirmed by the macro- and microscopic observations of the aggregate and separated cement paste. Works realized on the concrete recycling method resulted in obtaining a patent PAT.229887.

In this article, a study of the threshold gradient and leaching properties for recycled material, namely, recycled concrete aggregate (RCA), was conducted. The RCA in this study is a material that comes from recycling concrete debris. A series of tests in permeameter apparatus in a constant head manner were conducted. The test method has been improved to eliminate common mistakes, which occur when the constant head method is used. During the following study, aggregates with gradations equal to 0–8, 0–16, and 0.05–16 mm were tested. The tests were conducted on gradients ranging from 0.2 to 0.83. This range of tested gradients led to the evaluation of the flux velocity and indicated non-Darcian flow. For engineering applications, the threshold gradients for three RCA blends were calculated using a statistical analysis. The average coefficient of permeability, kavg, for linear flow was equal to 1.02 × 10−4–1.89 × 10−4 m/s. In this paper, suffosion analysis was also conducted for the three blends in order to eliminate the possibility of particle movement. Moreover, for RCA blend 0–16 mm, leaching properties was examined. It was found that the concentration of chlorides, sulphates, and heavy metals in the water solution does not exceed the permissible standards. This paper ends with conclusions and proposals concerning the threshold gradients obtained from the statistical analysis, suffosion analysis, and flux velocity.

The experiment aims to test the triple mixing (3M) technique to produce the concrete with recycled concrete aggregate (RCA). Then, the impact prolonged mixing, representing the influence of delivery and discharge time in praxis, is analysed by the change in strength properties. Both the 28-day compressive strength and tensile splitting strength are evaluated in two aspects: the prolonged mixing time (0, 45 and 90 min after initial mixing), and the mixing method (normal and triple). Prolonged mixing time brought both the positive and negative changes in strength characteristics however the worst difference between initial mixing (0′) and 90′ minutes of mixing was only 8.4% for compressive strength and 8.5% for tensile splitting strength.
