Degnala is one of the primary mycotoxicoses affecting buffaloes, with Fusarium spp. as the main causative agent. This disease is strongly associated with the feeding of rice straw to buffaloes and is considered endemic to regions where rice is cultivated. Cases are concentrated in winter when conditions favor fungal growth in inadequately stored straw. Degnala is characterized by necrosis and gangrene of the extremities, including the tail, lower limbs, ears, tongue, muzzle, and teats. The pelvic limbs are more affected than the thoracic limbs. A tortuous appearance of the tail is very common, and cracks or corneal loss of the hooves may occur, exposing the blades and even the bones. There is no diagnostic method for identifying the disease in animals other than clinical and epidemiological criteria, combined with fungal culture samples. There is no treatment that neutralizes the effects of the toxins; the current treatment is palliative and supportive, consisting of pentasulfate solution, anti-Degnala liquid, 2% nitroglycerin ointment, and broad-spectrum antibiotics for secondary infections. Additionally, the management of drying and proper storage of straw is essential for controlling this disease.

Rice straw is an agricultural waste, the disposal of which through open burning is an emerging challenge for ecology. Green manufacturing using straw returning provides a more avant-garde technique that is not only an effective management measure to improve soil fertility in agricultural ecosystems but also nurtures environmental stewardship by reducing waste and the carbon footprint. However, fresh straw that is returned to the field cannot be quickly decomposed, and screening microorganisms with the capacity to degrade straw and understanding their mechanism of action is an efficient approach to solve such problems. This study aimed to reveal the potential mechanism of influence exerted by exogenous degradative bacteria (ZJW-6) on the degradation of straw, growth of plants, and soil bacterial community during the process of returning rice straw to the soil. The inoculation with ZJW-6 enhanced the driving force of cellulose degradation. The acceleration of the rate of decomposition of straw releases nutrients that are easily absorbed by rice (Oryza sativa L.), providing favorable conditions for its growth and promoting its growth and development; prolongs the photosynthetic functioning period of leaves; and lays the material foundation for high yields of rice. ZJW-6 not only directly participates in cellulose degradation as degrading bacteria but also induces positive interactions between bacteria and fungi and enriches the microbial taxa that were related to straw degradation, enhancing the rate of rice straw degradation. Taken together, ZJW-6 has important biological potential and should be further studied, which will provide new insights and strategies for the appropriate treatment of rice straw. In the future, this degrading bacteria may provide a better opportunity to manage straw in an ecofriendly manner.

A stable aerobic consortium was enriched to degrade crystalline cellulose (Whatman filter paper 1). The degradation efficiency of the consortium after 7 days of incubation was 91% compared to the control. One bacterial isolate, C7, capable of degrading various cellulosic substrates, was obtained from the consortium under aerobic conditions. The sequencing of 16s rDNA revealed that it was related to Paenibacillus sp. It degraded 83% of cotton after 3 days of incubation. The degradation efficiency of Paenibacillus sp. C7 for filter paper, cotton, and avicel was 90%, 90%, and 92% after 5 days of incubation compared to the control. It also degraded non-pretreated agricultural residues efficiently by 70% for rice straw and 46% for wheat bran in 10 days. Scanning electron micrographs (SEMs) of degraded filter paper after 2 days of incubation indicated smoother and thinner fabrics in its structure. It is a potential cheaper candidate for the degradation of lignocellulosic biomass without any pretreatment.

Rice straw is not easy to decompose, it takes a long time to compost, and the anaerobic bacteria involved in the decomposition process produce a large amount of carbon dioxide (CO2), indicating that applications for rice straw need to be developed. Recycling rice straw in agricultural crops is an opportunity to increase the sustainability of grain production. Several studies have shown that the probiotic population gradually decreases in the soil, leading to an increased risk of plant diseases and decreased biomass yield. Because the microorganisms in the soil are related to the growth of plants, when the soil microbial community is imbalanced it seriously affects plant growth. We investigated the feasibility of using composted rice stalks to artificially cultivate microorganisms obtained from the Oryza sativa-planted environment for analyzing the mycobiota and evaluating applications for sustainable agriculture. Microbes obtained from the water-submerged part (group-A) and soil part (group-B) of O. sativa were cultured in an artificial medium, and the microbial diversity was analyzed with internal transcribed spacer sequencing. Paddy field soil was mixed with fermented paddy straw compost, and the microbes obtained from the soil used for O. sativa planting were designated as group-C. The paddy fields transplanted with artificially cultured microbes from group-A were designated as group-D and those from group-B were designated as group-E. We found that fungi and yeasts can be cultured in groups-A and -B. These microbes altered the soil mycobiota in the paddy fields after transplantation in groups-D and -E compared to groups-A and -B. Development in O. sativa post treatment with microbial transplantation was observed in the groups-D and -E compared to group-C. These results showed that artificially cultured microorganisms could be efficiently transplanted into the soil and improve the mycobiota. Phytohormones were involved in improving O. sativa growth and rice yield via the submerged part-derived microbial medium (group-D) or the soil part-derived microbial medium (group-E) treatments. Collectively, these fungi and yeasts may be applied in microbial transplantation via rice straw fermentation to repair soil mycobiota imbalances, facilitating plant growth and sustainable agriculture. Supercritical water gasification (SCWG) technology is highly promising for its ability to cleanly and efficiently convert biomass to hydrogen. This paper developed a model for the gasification of rice straw in supercritical water (SCW) to predict the direction and limit of the reaction based on the Gibbs free energy minimization principle. The equilibrium distribution of rice straw gasification products was analyzed under a wide range of parameters including temperatures of 400–1200 °C, pressures of 20–50 MPa, and rice straw concentrations of 5–40 wt%. Coke may not be produced due to the excellent properties of supercritical water under thermodynamic constraints. Higher temperatures, lower pressures, and biomass concentrations facilitated the movement of the chemical equilibrium towards hydrogen production. The hydrogen yield was 47.17 mol/kg at a temperature of 650 °C, a pressure of 25 MPa, and a rice straw concentration of 5 wt%. Meanwhile, there is an absorptive process in the rice straw SCWG process for high-calorific value hydrogen production. Energy self-sufficiency of the SCWG process can be maintained by adding small amounts of oxygen (ER < 0.2). This work would be of great value in guiding rice straw SCWG experiments.

Promoting rice straw in situ return is an important strategy for improving soil quality. From 2018 to 2021, we investigated the effects of rice straw return with microbial agents and film covering technology on soil physical and chemical properties at different layer depths, as well as the soil microbial community structure, in Hunan, southern China. This study was designed to evaluate the effects of microbial agents (T1), film mulch covering (T2), and the application of microbial agents combined with film mulch (T3) on the soil physicochemical properties and microbial community after rice straw in situ return. The results show that, after three years of continuous treatment, T3 significantly increased the soil temperature by 17.76–22.97%, T2 significantly increased the water content by 34.27–46.23%, and T1 and T3 significantly increased the soil pH. The addition of microbial agents combined with film mulch resulted in a notable increase in both the number of OTUs and the Chao1 index of soil microorganisms. Additionally, the model of promoting rice straw in situ return (the application of a microbial agent combined with film mulch) was shown to promote the growth of beneficial soil microorganisms. RDA was used for the investigation, and the findings showed that soil microorganisms were significantly influenced by the TOC content, pH, and water content. These findings provide evidence of an effective method for accelerating the decomposition of late rice straw and guiding soil improvement in tobacco–rice rotation regions.

The most abundant organic carbon source on Earth is cellulosic materials. Its main resources are crop straws which are not commonly used and produce environmental pollution. These resources can be a site of biological hydrolysis to primary sugars by cellulase enzymes, in which avicelase is the most efficient enzyme in the cellulase family. This work aimed to clone the avicelase gene, transfer it to E. coli, optimize its expression, saccharify rice straw to its primary sugars, and ferment it to bioethanol. The avicelase gene was cloned from the Bacillus subtilis strain and cloned into two E. coli (i.e., DH5α and Bl21) strains. The optimized avicelase activity was described by testing the effect of different media and growth conditions including different carbon and nitrogen sources, as well as pHs and shaking or static conditions. Avicelase enzyme was extracted and used to saccharify rice straw. The obtained glucose was subjected to fermentation by Saccharomyces cerevisiae F.307 under an aerobic condition growth for the production of bioethanol. The ethanol yield was 5.26% (v/v), and the fermentation efficiency was 86%. This study showed the ability to clone one of the cellulolytic genes (i.e., avicelase) for the valorization of rice straw for producing renewable energy and bioethanol from cellulolytic wastes such as rice straw.

The quantity of organic waste generated by agricultural sectors is continually increasing due to population growth and rising food demand. Rice is the primary consumable food in Asia. However, many stakeholders follow a linear economic model such as the “take–make–waste” concept. This linear model leads to a substantial environmental burden and the destruction of valuable resources without gaining their actual value. Because these by-products can be converted into energy generating and storage materials, and into bio-based products by cascading transformation processes within the circular economy concept, waste should be considered a central material. This review examines the composition of rice straw, bran, and husks, and the procedures involved in manufacturing value-added goods, from these wastes. Moreover, starting with an extensive literature analysis on the rice value chains, this work systematizes and displays a variety of strategies for using these by-products. The future development of agricultural waste management is desirable to capitalize on the multi-functional product by circulating all the by-products in the economy. According to the analysis of relevant research, rice straw has considerable potential as a renewable energy source. However, there is a significant research gap in using rice bran as an energy storage material. Additionally, modified rice husk has increased its promise as an adsorbent in the bio-based water treatment industry. Furthermore, the case study of Sri Lanka revealed that developing countries have a huge potential to value these by-products in various sectors of the economy. Finally, this paper provides suggestions for researchers and policymakers to improve the current agriculture waste management system with the best option and integrated approach for economic sustainability and eco- and environmental solution, considering some case studies to develop sustainable waste management processes.

Straw return is an effective agricultural management practice for alleviating soil sickness, but only a few studies have focused on the incorporation of straw with deep plowing and rotary tillage practices in vegetable production. To determine the effects of rice straw return on Chinese cabbage clubroot, a field experiment for three consecutive years in the same area was performed. Soil microbial high-throughput sequencing, quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and other methods were used to detect Chinese cabbage plant growth, clubroot occurrence, soil chemical properties and soil microbial diversity and abundance. The results showed that straw addition could significantly reduce the clubroot disease incidence. Through Illumina Miseq sequencing, the diversity of the fungi decreased obviously. The relative abundance of the phyla Proteobacteria and Firmicutes was strikingly reduced, while that of Chloroflexi was significantly increased. Redundancy analysis suggests that soil properties may also affect the soil microbial composition; changes in the microbial structure of bacteria and fungi were associated with the available phosphorus. In conclusion, the continuous addition of rice straw can promote the growth and control the occurrence of clubroot, which is closely related to the microbial composition, and the inhibition effect is proportional to the age of addition.

The excessive application of chemical fertilizers in rice fields exacerbates soil degradation and poses a threat to food security. Achieving an increase in rice production and minimizing environmental costs are inevitable requirements for achieving sustainable rice production. The synergistic utilization of rice straw (RS) and Chinese milk vetch (MV) is a sustainable measure to improve soil quality in Southern China. How this management strategy impacts agricultural productivity and soil carbon (C) sequestration under different fertilization conditions is unclear. Several treatments, including only chemical fertilizer (F), F + MV (FM), F + RS (FS), and F + MV + RS (FMS) under a standard rate of nitrogen (N100) and 40% reduced nitrogen (N60) levels were designed to explore changes in rice yields and soil organic carbon (SOC) concentrations, stocks, and soil labile organic C fractions (permanganate oxidizable C) during 2018–2020 in a double-rice-cropping system. The results show that the FMS treatment reduced soil bulk density to alleviate soil compaction and improved the soil carbon management index. The synergistic utilization of MV and RS replacing 40% of the chemical N fertilizer could still maintain the rice yield. Compared to the F treatment, the average annual grain yield was significantly increased by 9.82% and 5.84% in the FMS treatment; SOC concentration was increased by 16.05% and 19.98% on average (p < 0.05), and SOC stock was increased by 1.78 Mg C ha−1 and 2.37 Mg C ha−1 under the N60 and N100 levels, respectively. The random forest regression model and correlation analysis demonstrated that the inputs of chemical N, organic N and C, and appropriate C/N ratio promoted soil C accumulation. Furthermore, the structural equation model analysis exhibited that the C input affects the highly labile organic carbon (HLOC) and total labile organic carbon (LOC); the HLOC had a positive effect on SOC (p < 0.05). N input had a significant effect on LOC and yield. Our results suggest that the synergistic utilization of MV and RS plays an important role in ensuring stable grain production, improving soil C sequestration capacity, and maintaining soil environmental health in Southern China.

This study was to investigate the effects of cellulase and xylanase on fermentation characteristics, nutrient composition and the bacterial community of the mixed silage of king grass and rice straw. Lab-scale bag silage was produced and seven groups were studied: blank control (CK); added 1%, 2% cellulase (CE1, CE2); added 1%, 2% xylanase (XY1, XY2); and added 0.5% cellulase +0.5% xylanase, 1% cellulase +1% xylanase (CX1, CX2). The results showed that the application of additives in six treated groups exerted a positive effect on lactic acid (LA) content and their pH values decreased significantly (p < 0.05). The addition of cellulase and xylanase decreased (p < 0.05) the content of neutral detergent fiber (NDF) and acid detergent fiber (ADF) significantly and increased (p < 0.01) the crude protein (CP) and water-soluble carbohydrate (WSC) content. Filter paper enzyme activity (FPA) declined and xylanase activity (XA) intensified (p < 0.05) as ensiling was prolonged, where most of the enzymatic treatments (especially XY2, CX2) resulted in increased enzyme activities. Moreover, the addition of cellulase and xylanase reduced the abundance of harmful bacteria such as Acinetobacter and Klebsiella and increased the abundance of lactic acid bacteria such as Lacticaseseibacillus, Lactiplantibacillus. In conclusion, the addition of cellulase and xylanase would improve fermentation quality and nutrient preservation via altering the bacterial community, with 1% cellulase or complex enzyme best.

A comprehensive understanding of rice straw (RS) and biochar (BC) addition affecting soil quality, enzyme activities, bacterial community structure and grain yield is crucial. The objective of this study was to examine the dynamics of the soil microbial community impacted by the application of rice straw and biochar, and to understand the relationship between the microbial communities, soil enzymes, nutrients and grain yield of paddies. We conducted a field experiment with organic amendments under the direct seeding of paddies. The bacterial community structure in the rhizosphere was characterized using high-throughput 16S rRNA sequencing. The results showed that RS amendment increased grain yields by 8.5 and 9.9% more than with BC and the control without organic amendment (CK), respectively (p < 0.05). The abundance of bacteria associated with nitrate reduction in RS was higher than that in BC and CK, which further showed the significance of the RS-treated soil bacteria in rice nutrient utilization. A cladogram plotted using linear discriminant analysis effect size showed that Proteobacteria (Alphaproteobacteria), Acidobacteria, Firmicutes, Verrucomicrobia and Epsilonbacteraeota in the RS-treated soil increased in comparison with CK. Pearson’s correlation analysis showed that enzymes activities (cellulase activity and protease activity), soil nutrition content (soil hydrolyzable nitrogen), and bacterial phyla (Nitrospinae) were positively correlated with grain yield, suggesting that the RS-treated soil improved enzyme activities, soil nutrition content, and bacterial abundance, which in turn increased grain yield. The results indicated that RS-treated bacterial communities combined with soil enzymatic activities strengthen the transformation of nutrients, suggesting that the interactions play an important role in enhancing the grain yield of paddy rice. These results provide new insights and a theoretical basis for studying the changes in soil microbial communities with the application of RS and BC in Northeastern China.

This research explores the enhancement of bio-oil quality through upgrading with the magnetic bimetallic oxide (CuO-Fe3O4) catalysts supported on activated rice straw biochar (AcB). These catalysts were employed in a supercritical ethanol-based upgrading process. Various characterization techniques, including elemental analysis, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) analysis, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), were utilized to characterize the prepared catalysts. This study revealed significant improvements in the physical characteristics and chemical composition of the bio-oil, with an increase in the heating value (HHV) from 21.3 to 32.1 MJ/kg. Esterification and transesterification were identified as key reactions contributing to this improvement. Notably, the pH of bio-oil increased from 4.3 (raw bio-oil) to 5.63 (after upgrading), signifying reduced acidity. The analysis of the bio-oil’s chemical composition highlighted a decrease in oxygen content and an increase in carbon and hydrogen content. At the optimum conditions, the application of supercritical ethanol proved to be an efficient method for enhancing the bio-oil’s properties. A crucial transformation occurred during the upgrading process and more than 90% of carboxylic acids were converted into esters, primarily ethyl acetate at the optimal conditions. This study has demonstrated the effective enhancement of raw bio-oil from rice straw through the utilization of carbon-based bimetallic oxide catalysts in a supercritical upgrading procedure.

Improper disposal of vegetable waste can cause serious environmental pollution, but because they contain huge water content and organic matter, they are not suitable for disposal by methods such as incineration and landfill. However, vegetable waste contains a large amount of nutrients and have some complementary effects with rice straw in terms of physical structure, nutrients, and moisture. In this experiment, the plant feed (corn husk, peanut shells and sorghum shells) was used as the control group (CON group), and the mixed silage of Chinese cabbage waste and rice straw (mixed silage) was used as the experiment group (TRE group), and its safety performance was evaluated by testing its toxin content, pesticide residues, vitamin contents and feeding experiment of Hu sheep. In the animal experiment, 16 healthy Hu sheep (5.5 months, 39.11 ± 4.16 kg) were randomly divided into two groups of 8 each. The results of the safety performance evaluation showed that the content of mycotoxins, heavy metals, and nitrites as well as pesticide residues in the crude feeds of both groups were within the range of Chinese feed hygiene standards. In addition, the levels of deoxynivalenol (DON) and aflatoxin (AFT) in the CON group were lower, while the content of ochratoxin (OTA) and zearalenone were higher than those in the TRE group (p < 0.05). The levels of plumbum(Pb), chromium (Cr), cadmium (Cd), and nitrite in the CON group were lower than the mixed silage, while the levels of As were higher than the mixed silage (p < 0.05). It is worth noticing that the content of vitamin B2 (VB2) and vitamin C (VC) in the TRE group was higher than the CON group (p < 0.05). The results of the feeding experiment showed that the mixed silage did not affect the growth performance, nutrient digestibility, organ index, and intestinal index of Hu sheep (p > 0.05). In addition, the mixed silage reduced the weight of omasum, the proportion of omasum to live weight before slaughter, the amount of compound stomach, and the proportion of compound stomach to live weight before slaughter, which were higher than those in the TRE group (p < 0.05). The thickness of the basal layer of the rumen abdominal sac, the red blood cell count, the content of IL-10, and TNF-α in the blood, and TNF-α content in the rumen of the Hu sheep in the TRE group were higher than the CON group (p < 0.05). In conclusion, the feed safety index content of the mixed silage did not exceed the Chinese feed hygiene and safety standards and did not cause adverse effects on the growth performance of the Hu sheep, and it improved the immune performance of the body and digestive tract of the sheep to a certain extent and promoted the healthy development of the sheep.

Aimed at addressing the problems of the existing straw choppers on combine harvesters, such as a large cutting resistance and poor cutting effect, combined with bionic engineering technology and biological characteristics, a bionic model was used to extract the characteristics of the cutting blades of locusta migratoria manilensis’s upper jaw. A 3D point cloud reconstruction and machine vision methods were used to fit the polynomial curve of the blade edge using Matlab 2016. A straw-cutting process was simulated using the discrete element method, and the cutting effect of the bionic blade was verified. Cutting experiments with rice straws were conducted using a physical property tester, and the cutting resistance of straw to bionic blades and general blades was compared. On the whole, the average cutting force of the bionic blades was lower than that of the general blades. The average cutting force of the bionic blade was 18.74~38.23% lower than that of a smooth blade and 1.63~25.23% lower than that of a serrated blade. Similarly, the maximum instantaneous cutting force of the bionic blade was reduced by 2.30~2.89% compared with the general blade, which had a significant drag reduction effect. By comparing the time–force curves of different blades’ cutting processes, it was determined that the drag-reducing effect of the bionic blade lies in shortening the straw rupture time. The larger the contact area between the blade and the straw, the more uniform the cutting morphology of the straw after cutting. Field experiment results indicate that the average power consumption of a straw chopper partially installed with bionic blades was 5.48% lower than one with smooth blades, measured using a wireless torque analysis module. In this research study, the structure of the straw chopper of an existing combine harvester was improved based on the bionic principle, which reduced resistance when cutting crop straw, thus reducing the power consumption required by the straw chopper and improving the effectiveness and stability of the blades.

Ensiling density has significant importance for the quality and preservation of silage. Appropriate ensiling density could improve the nutritional value, extend the storage time of silage and reduce the risk of mold and spoilage. This work aimed to evaluate the effect of ensiling densities on the fermentation quality and aerobic stability of rice straw. The rice straw was obtained after threshing, then chopped and ensiled into a 10 L laboratory silo with three ensiling densities (high density at 700 g/L, medium density at 600 g/L and low density at 500 g/L). Five silos per density were opened after 3, 5, 7, 14, 30 and 60 days of ensiling, and then, the fermentation quality and aerobic stability were analyzed. During ensiling, high density had the highest lactic acid content, and the lowest pH and ammonia nitrogen. There was no difference (p > 0.05) in the propionic acid, butyric acid and ethanol contents among all silage, and the contents of propionic acid and butyric acid were trace amounts. On day 60 of ensiling, the Flieg’s point of high density and medium density were higher than the low density. During aerobic exposure, the continuous lactic acid decrease and pH increase were observed in all silage. The aerobic bacteria and yeasts count in the high density and medium density were lower than that in the low density. The aerobic stability of the high density (26 h) and the medium density (24 h) were higher than that of the low density (13 h). It was suggested that if the ensiling density is higher than 600 g/L, it could effectively improve the fermentation quality and aerobic stability of rice straw.

In the current investigation, carbon-based solid acid catalysts were synthesized from peanut shells (PSs) and rice straw (RS) using ZnCl2 activation and concentrated sulfuric acid sulfonation. These catalysts were then employed for the hydration of pinene to produce terpineol. The research findings suggest that the natural porous structure of RS is more amenable to ZnCl2 activation compared to PSs. Furthermore, the catalysts prepared from fully activated RS by ZnCl2 (RSA-C-S) had a higher SBET and higher density of oxygen-containing groups (–COOH) in comparison with unactivated RS-based solid acids (RSC-S). The characterization outcomes revealed that RSA-C-S possesses a specific surface area of 527.0 m2/g, significantly outperforming RSC-S, which has a surface area of 420.9 m2/g. Additionally, RSA-C-S registered a higher –COOH density of 1.37 mmol/g, as opposed to RSC-S’s, with 1.07 mmol/g, attributable to the partial oxidation of internal –OH groups during activation. Experimental data from hydration tests confirmed that the catalyst’s superior performance is largely attributed to its elevated specific surface area and a high density of –COOH functional groups. Under optimal reaction parameters, RSA-C-S demonstrated unparalleled catalytic efficiency in the synthesis of α-terpineol via hydration of α-pinene, achieving conversion and selectivity rates of 87.15% and 54.19%, respectively.

This study investigated the effects of substituting rice straw with cassava in total mixed ration silage on feed intake, digestibility, rumen fermentation, ruminating activity, and energy balance. An energy balance experiment was conducted to determine nutrient and energy utilization in dairy bulls. Four Holstein Friesian (HF) crossbred young bulls (93.19% HF × 6.81% Native Thai; average age of 12.08 ± 0.22 months and body weight of 266 ± 9.80 kg) were used in a 4 × 4 Latin square design with four 28-d periods. The four dietary treatments included substituting cassava with rice straw on a 50, 150, 250, and 350 g/kg dry matter basis. Increasing the amount of cassava in the diet resulted in linearly decreased rumination behaviors and enteric methane emissions (p < 0.05) but a linear increase in feed intake and digestibility, total volatile fatty acid concentration, and propionic acid: acetic acid ratio in the rumen fluid (p < 0.05), thus leading to a greater energy balance status (p < 0.01). Our results indicated that replacing cassava with rice straw from 5% to 35% in the ration of Holstein bulls resulted in a substantial reduction in physically effective fiber and chewing time but improved nutrient and energy supply. The metabolizable energy requirement for the maintenance of crossbred dairy bulls was estimated to be 599.9 kJ/kg metabolic body weight and the efficiency of metabolizable energy used for growth was 0.88. We concluded that cassava is a good energy feed resource for Holstein crossbred bulls in the tropics.

The aim of this experiment is to investigate the effects of lactic acid bacteria and cellulase on the fermentation quality, chemical composition, aerobic stability and ruminal degradation characteristics of mixed silage prepared with amaranth and rice straw. Lactic acid bacteria and cellulase were used as silage additives, and the four treatments were as follows: control group (CON, no additive), lactic acid bacteria group (LAB, additive amount was 5 mg/kg fresh matter), cellulase group (CEL, 2 mg/kg) and lactic acid bacteria and cellulase group (LBC, additive amount was the same as in the individual treatments). All treatments were ensiled for 60 days. The dry-matter, crude-protein, neutral-detergent-fiber and acid-detergent-fiber ruminal degradability of silage were analyzed utilizing the nylon bag method. Compared with the CON group, the inoculation of lactic acid bacteria and cellulase individually promoted the fermentation of mixed silage to a certain degree. The combined inoculation of mixed silage significantly increased (p < 0.05) the concentrations of lactic acid and dry matter, while it reduced (p < 0.05) the pH and ammonia nitrogen/total nitrogen, harmful microorganism counts and contents of acetic acid, neutral detergent fiber and acid detergent fiber. In addition, the aerobic stability time of the LBC group was lower (p < 0.05) than that of the other groups. The ruminal degradation rate of dry matter, crude protein, neutral detergent fiber and acid detergent fiber in the LBC group was significantly increased (p < 0.05) compared to the CON group. Overall, the addition of the additives mentioned earlier improved the quality of mixed silage composed of amaranth and rice straw, and the best results were obtained by combining the inoculation of lactic acid bacteria and cellulase.

Sugarcane bagasse and rice straw are major agricultural byproducts often discarded or burned as waste after cultivation, leaving their untapped potential for utilization. In this work, cellulose fibers were extracted from sugarcane bagasse and rice straw using a simple procedure: alkaline treatment with sodium hydroxide, bleaching with sodium hypochlorite, and acid hydrolysis. The obtained cellulosic materials were successfully prepared into milky white and transparent films, of which the transparency slightly decreased with the addition of glycerol. The surface of all the films appeared homogeneous with a random orientation of fibers. The rice-straw (RS) film had a more fragile texture than the sugarcane-bagasse (SBG) film. The FTIR analysis clearly indicated the functional groups of cellulose, as well as glycerol for the films mixed with glycerol. Thermal analysis showed that the native SBG film decomposed at 346 °C, higher than the native RS film (339 °C). The presence of glycerol in the films resulted in slightly lower maximum decomposition temperature (Td,max) values as well as mechanical properties. Regarding water susceptibility, the RS film had a higher percentage than the native SBG and glycerol-mixed SBG films. The extracted cellulose from both sources could form almost spherical-shaped cellulose particles. Thus, through the simple extraction method, sugarcane bagasse and rice straw could serve as excellent sources of cellulose materials for preparing cellulose films and particles, which would be advantageous to the development of cellulose-based materials.

Ethanol production from lignocellulosic biomass comprises pretreatment, hydrolysis, and fermentation. However, several inhibitors are generated during rice straw chemical hydrolysis, including furfural, 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF), and phenolics. These inhibitors, i.e., furfural and HMF, are toxic to yeast cells, can negatively impact yeast growth and metabolism, and reduce the process efficiency and production yield. Total phenolics are also reported to inhibit yeast growth and metabolism and act as a source of reactive oxygen species (ROS), which can damage yeast cells. Therefore, minimizing the generation of these inhibitors during rice straw hydrolysis is essential to improve the efficiency and yield of ethanol fermentation. Optimization of process variables can help reduce inhibitor generation and increase the efficiency of used detoxification methods such as adsorption, ion exchange, and biological methods. This study aimed to minimize inhibitor generation during the chemical hydrolysis of rice straw biomass. Minitab 17 software was employed and response surface curve regression analysis was used to develop a quadratic equation of an optimized process for minimized release of inhibitors molecules. The main inhibitors in pretreated rice straw hydrolysate identified were furfural (48.60%/100 g solid biomass), HMF (2.32%/100 g solid biomass), and total phenolics (1.65%/100 g solid biomass). The optimal pretreatment conditions were a biomass solid loading rate of 15% w/v, an H2SO4concentration of 12% v/v, a pretreatment reaction time of 30 min, and a temperature of 100 °C. Optimization of these process variables reduced the inhibitor generation by up to one and a half fold.

The present study shows the mercerization process (NaOH) and its effect on the physicochemical characteristics of rice straw. In total, 12 samples were analyzed, 3 as a comparative basis and 9 that were exposed to different concentrations of NaOH (1%, 2%, and 3%) and times, in hours, of exposure in an alkaline environment (1 h, 2 h, and 3 h). The loss of silica and reduction in lignin and hemicellulose contents identified in the chemical characterization allowed for a visualization of the surface topography and cross-section of the treated samples, making it possible to contrast them with the three untreated samples by comparing their roughness, the appearance of their pores, and the contractions of vascular bundles in their conductive tissue. An analysis of the data showed that the results between some treatments were similar, suggesting a reduction in resources in future research. The mechanical resistance allowed for identifying that the NaOH-1%-1 h treatment obtained a better mechanical resistance in the treated samples. However, NaOH-3%-1 h, with the third lowest resistance, obtained the highest % elongation compared to the other samples. These physicochemical changes with NaOH facilitate the selection of the treatment concerning the fiber–matrix interaction and final performance of the composite material that intends to use rice straw as a reinforcing fiber.

Rice is the most important cereal in Asia. However, it also results in the generation of large quantities of rice-derived residues (i.e., rice straw and rice husk). Due to the residues richness in lignocellulosic components, they potentially have considerable value in material and/or energy production without illegal burning in open fields. This work focused on investigating the thermochemical properties and inorganic/metal element contents of rice straw and rice husk. The former included proximate analysis, calorific value, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). The latter covered the ten elements most relevant to their slagging/fouling indices. The results showed that they are suitable for energy use as biomass fuels, but rice husk was superior to rice straw because of the high silica content in the rice husk and the significant contents of potassium, sulfur and phosphorus in the rice straw. Using several slagging and fouling indices, the evaluation results were also consistent with their contents of inorganic elements or oxides. To increase the fuel properties of rice-derived residues, they could be pretreated with alkaline leaching, thus causing lower emissions of particulates and reduced slagging tendency when co-firing them with coal in industrial boilers.

Although mulching is a widely used agronomic practice, its effects on the rhizosphere remain poorly understood. Here, we employed amplicon and transcriptomic sequencing to investigate variations in a grapevine rhizosphere system under mulch treatment (rice straw + felt + plastic film). Analyzing 16S and intergenic spacer (ITS) rRNA sequences indicated that the Shannon and Simpson indices of the bacterial and fungal communities increased markedly under mulch treatment. The bacterial and fungal compositions varied significantly between the control and mulch treatments. Mulching enriched for potentially beneficial microbes that confer disease resistance to plants or participate in nitrogen metabolism (Kaistobacter, Ammoniphilus, Lysobacter, Ammoniphilus, Alicyclobacillus, Aquicella, Nitrospira, Chaetomium, and Microascus), whereas more potentially pathogenic microbes (Fusarium and Gibberella) were detected in the control. Moreover, certain bacteria and fungi exhibited different correlations with the root transcriptome functions of the MEBlue module. The complexity of the bacterial and fungal co-occurrence networks increased with higher node numbers, positive and negative links after mulching. Following mulching, the rhizosphere showed elevated pH, organic matter, and catalase activities, and decreased sucrase and cellulase and β-glucosidase activities. Our results provide comprehensive data showing how a grapevine rhizosphere system responded to mulching treatment and shed important insight into mulching practices for fruit trees.

Recently, the conversion of livestock manure to solid fuel via torrefaction has brought more attention to moving forward to a carbon neutral society. A proper design of livestock manure to solid fuel is key for sustainable waste management. In this study, cow manure, as a representative of livestock manure, was examined for solid fuel production, focusing on enhancing the heating value. The torrefaction process was adopted as a main solid fuel generation process and compared to simple drying. The heating value of the torrefied cow manure was increased as the torrefaction temperature increased from 200 °C to 300 °C. The heating value was nearly saturated at around 30 min when the torrefaction temperature was increased from 20 min to 40 min. The heating value was further increased when the cow manure was mixed with sawdust or rice straw. The sawdust, which originally possessed a higher heating value, showed its potential as a candidate for additives to the torrefaction of cow manure. Compared to simple drying, torrefaction showed a higher heating value and energy density, successfully converting to stable carbon material.

Current rice straw disposal practices have serious repercussions on the environment and, in addition, do not consider its energy potential. On the contrary, the anaerobic digestion of rice straw makes it possible to produce renewable energy and to reintroduce into the soil the nutrients present in the digestate, at the same time, reducing greenhouse gas emissions from paddies. For rice straw of different geographical origin, by applying a mass balance method to the digester, the minimum requirements in terms of conditioners (nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium) and water, which allow obtaining the maximum production of methane, were calculated. The results obtained show that after the first 30 days (hydraulic retention time) for each ton of rice straw digested, the daily water consumption varies considerably from one country to another, from a minimum value of 1.5 m3/d to a maximum of 4.3 m3/d. After the same time, the addition of nitrogen and phosphorus is only required for the optimal anaerobic digestion of Indian rice straw. The low presence of these elements in Indian straw requires an addition of 3 kg/d of urea and 1.5 kg/d of superphosphate to compensate for the lack of nitrogen and phosphorus, respectively. In all the examined cases, the concentration of potassium, even if higher than the optimal value, does not reach levels that can significantly affect the methane production.

Frequent oil spills have caused serious consequences to the ecosystem and environment. Therefore, in order to reduce and eliminate the impact of oil spills on biology and the environment, oil spill remediation materials must be considered. As a kind of cheap and biodegradable natural organic cellulose oil-absorbing material, straw has an important practical significance in the treatment of oil spills. In order to improve the ability of rice straw to absorb crude oil, rice straw was first treated with acid and was then modified with sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) through a simple charge effect. Finally, the performance of oil absorption was tested and evaluated. The results illustrate that the oil absorption performance was greatly improved under the conditions of 10% H2SO4, for a 90 min reaction at 90 °C, under 2% SDS, and reacted for 120 min at 20 °C, and the rate of adsorption for rice straw to crude oil was raised by 3.33 g/g (0.83 to 4.16). Then, the rice stalks before and after the modification were characterized. Contact angle analysis shows that the modified rice stalks display better hydrophobic–lipophilic properties than unmodified rice stalks. The rice straw was characterized by XRD and TGA, and the surface structure of the rice straw was characterized by FTIR and SEM, which explain the mechanism of surface-modified rice straws with SDS to improve their oil absorption capacity.

A force-feeding device with a double-roller anisotropic was designed for the D200 single screw straw fiber extruder to keep the performance continuity of the system, which could improve the productivity of straw fiber. Four factors (the diameter of the auxiliary roll, the difference in linear speed of the two rolls, the gap between two rollers and the spindle speed as the test factors) were investigated to establish regression model to analyze the influence of the coupling of multiple factors on the test indexes. It was demonstrated that significant effects (p < 0.05) on the feeding rate and material loss were produced by four factors according to the experimental results. The sequence of influence in descending order on feeding rate was spindle speed, linear speed difference, gap and auxiliary roller diameter. The effects on materials loss in descending order were auxiliary roller diameter, line speed difference, spindle speed and gap. The optimal combination of parameters was obtained by the response surface, which were an auxiliary roller diameter of 230 mm, a spindle speed of 104.49 rpm, a line speed difference of 2840 mm/s and a gap between the two rolls of 14 mm. The average feeding rate was 2.3798 t/h, and the loss was 1.908 kg/h, and the errors were within 3.28%, which satisfied the feeding requirements for rice straw fiber production with high feeding efficiency and low raw material losses. This study provided a reference for the forced compression feeding and fibrillation process of rice straw.

Due to the significant quantities of waste generated by the Sri Lankan rice industry, circular bioeconomy methodologies were applied to examine value-adding entrepreneurial activities for rice industry by-products (RIB). The study was conceived after scouring the existing literature on agricultural waste management and interviewing experts in the field and the rice industry. In the first phase, the suitability of valorizing alternatives for RIB was considered via a multi-criteria decision-making method. Valorization options, such as biochar production, energy purposes, composting, and other activities, were evaluated using an analytical hierarchy process (AHP) based on four criteria, namely environmental, social, technical, and economic issues. The results indicated that the highest priority should be given to environmental, social, and economic considerations, with local priority vectors of 0.5887, 0.2552, and 0.0955, respectively. It was found that biochar production is the optimal valorization strategy for managing RIB in Sri Lanka. From these findings, the development of a sustainable business model for making biochar out of RIB was done based on commercial motivations and value addition in biochar manufacturing processes. The Business Model Canvas elements played a vital role in categorizing and interpreting the case study data. Though the RIB seems undervalued at present, it was found that as a direct result of environmental concerns, several stakeholders have developed RIB valorization with an emphasis on bioenergy generation and biochar production. Adequate subsidies (technology and knowledge), standard regulations, more collective actions for creating economies of scale, and marketing strategies (consumer awareness) are all necessary for the successful implementation of sustainable circular business models.

Cadmium (Cd) pollution poses a growing threat to rice production in acidic paddies. In south China, a common agricultural practice involves the combined utilization of Chinese milk vetch (M) and rice straw (R). However, it is unclear how the addition of lime to these amendments affects Cd bioavailability and accumulation in soil. Control (CK), chemical fertilizer (F), Chinese milk vetch + rice straw + chemical fertilizer (MRF), and Chinese milk vetch + rice straw + chemical fertilizer + lime (MRFL) treatments were applied to develop a kind of green, efficient, and practical amendment for acidic paddies. We conducted a microplot experiment to explore Cd immobilization in paddy soil and the Cd content in rice grains with these treatments. The results showed that compared with F, the rice Cd in the MRF and MRFL treatments were significantly decreased by 51.7% and 65.2% in early rice and 23.0% and 43.3% in late rice, respectively. Both the MRF and MRFL treatments significantly reduced soil available Cd and weak acid-extractable cadmium (Aci-Cd) concentrations and increased soil organic matter (SOM), exchangeable cation concentrations, and pH, which converted Cd into a stable form in soil. In addition, the MRF and MRFL treatments increased soil pH value by reducing soil exchangeable hydrogen ion concentration (E-H). Additionally, recombination of Cd forms was the primary factor in the reduction in available Cd concentration according to partial least squares path modeling (PLS-PM) analysis. The Cd concentration of rice grains was primarily associated with soil available Cd, soil pH value, and SOM. Overall, these results provide useful data and novel insights into reducing rice grain Cd in south China.

Dilute acid hydrolysis of lignocellulosic biomass generates inhibitors in the hydrolysate which hamper yeast metabolism and the fermentation process. Therefore, understanding the effect of these compounds on the performance of microorganisms becomes essential to achieve improved product yields. In this study, the effect of acetic acid, furfural, and hydroxymethylfurfural was evaluated on yeast growth and fermentation efficiency. Various parameters for the pretreatment of rice straw, such as an acid catalyst, and its concentration and residence time, were optimized for the maximum liberation of sugars in the hydrolysate. Further, the yeast strains Candida tropicalis and Meyerozyma caribbica were adapted for the tolerance of inhibitors at higher concentrations. A comparative analysis was carried out using un-adapted and adapted strains of Candida tropicalis and Meyerozyma caribbica for xylitol production. The findings of this study revealed that sulfuric acid (1.25% v/v) at 121 ரC for 30 min can efficiently convert rice straw xylan to xylose, with the release of 16.07 g/L xylose in the hydrolysate. Further, the adaptation results showed an increase of 76.42% and 69.33% in xylose assimilation by C. tropicalis and M. caribbica, respectively. The xylitol production with the adapted C. tropicalis was increased by 7.54% to 28.03 g/L xylitol. However, the xylitol production with the adapted M. caribbica was increased by 8.33%, yielding 26.02 g/L xylitol in the non-detoxified hydrolysate when compared to the un-adapted strains. Repeated batch fermentation was carried out for seven batches, and xylitol was found to be efficiently produced by the yeasts during five successive batches without any significant loss in the xylitol yield. Moreover, the results suggest that M. caribbica is a promising microorganism for the transformation of rice straw-derived xylose to xylitol.

Environmental pollution by arsenic (As) and hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) has been one of the most serious environmental problems in recent years around the world. Their presence in water is a result of both natural and anthropogenic activities, and poses serious risks to human health due to their high toxicity. Adsorption is a leading method used to remove arsenic and chromium, with biochar, a carbonaceous pyrolytic product made from various types of biomass, under low oxygen conditions, being one of the most common adsorbents due to its high surface area. Although biochar’s ability to immobilize and remove As and Cr(VI) is high, in order to increase the adsorption capacity and nutrient release potential of rice husk biochar, it is essential to select an appropriate pyrolysis and biochar modification technique. Physical or biological activation, steam/gas activation, UV irradiation, magnetization, alkali/acid treatment, and nano-modification are the main modification methods that will be discussed in this review. These modifications have led to multi-fold enhancement in adsorption/reduction capacity of As and Cr(VI), compared with plain biochar. This review provides a recent literature overview of the different biochar modification methods, as well as the factors that influence their capacity to successfully remove As and Cr(VI), along with regeneration potentials.

In order to enhance the performance of the epoxy resin-prepared materials, straw fiber was used as the reinforcing base in this study. The principle of this study is to use the cellulose component exposed after the defibrillation of straw fiber can be further combined with the epoxy group. Firstly, the degree of defibrillation of straw fiber under three different pretreatment methods of acid, alkali and moist heat treatment was explored, and a control test was conducted with untreated straw fiber, which showed that the defibrillation of the straw fiber after alkali treatment was better than the other two methods. Secondly, to prove the comprehensive effect of the pretreatment method and straw fiber filling amount on the composite material performance, this paper carried out a tensile, bending, density and water absorption test. The results showed that when the straw fiber filling was 15%, the best performance of the composites was achieved by the alkali treatment, with tensile strength and tensile modulus reaching 1.89 KN and 3.92 MPa, bending strength and bending modulus reaching 2.00 KN and 81.65 MPa, average water absorption reaching 2.77%, and density reaching 0.957 g/cm3. Finally, the results were verified using Image J software was used for verification. After comparison, the material meets the basic requirements of high-density fiberboard material and provides a reference for preparing straw epoxy resin composites.

This study evaluated the feasibility of continuous biohythane production from rice straw (RS) using an integrated anaerobic bioreactor (IABR) at thermophilic conditions. NaOH/Urea solution was employed as a pretreatment method to enhance and improve biohythane production. Results showed that the maximum specific biohythane yield was 612.5 mL/g VS, including 104.1 mL/g VS for H2 and 508.4 mL/g VS for CH4, which was 31.3% higher than the control RS operation stage. The maximum total chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal stabilized at about 86.8%. COD distribution results indicated that 2% of the total COD (in the feed) was converted into H2, 85.4% was converted to CH4, and 12.6% was retained in the effluent. Furthermore, carbon distribution analysis demonstrated that H2 production only diverted a small part of carbon, and most of the carbon flowed to the CH4 fermentation process. Upon further energy conversion analysis, the maximum value was 166.7%, 31.7 times and 12.8% higher than a single H2 and CH4 production process. This study provides a new perspective on lignocellulose-to-biofuel recovery.

Sustainable waste reduction strategies and innovative waste reduction concepts, as well as their application in the creation of compounds and products with added value, can benefit the economy while reducing environmental pressures. This research aimed to use biopolymeric nanomaterials to reduce the negative effects of salinity on tomato yield and quality. Three types of biopolymers (cellulose, pectin, and starch) were synthesized and characterized using natural materials such as rice straw, orange peel, and potato peel. The polymer’s ability to retain sodium ions was investigated. A greenhouse experiment was conducted to assess the potential of natural polymers (cellulose, starch, and pectin individually or in combination) to reduce the salinity side effects on tomato plants (Solanum Lycopersicon L.) cultivar (Super Strain B). Tomato seeds were germinated on soil bits for 20 days before planting five seedlings in each pot (20 cm diameter) with three replicates and filling each pot with sandy loam soil, with or without natural polymers at a rate of 2 g/Kg. The results revealed that all the polymers utilized had a superlative capability to hold sodium ions for both soluble and exchanged sodium. The use of various natural polymer hydrogels increased the number and fresh weight of tomato fruits. Data showed that using biopolymers hydrogels reduced salinity stress by rising the content of phenol, flavonoid, and antioxidant enzymes such as catalase and peroxidase. The use of natural biopolymers significantly improved total soluble solids, pH, and juice substance. Implementing biopolymeric materials could reduce environmental pressures while increasing farm income. Innovative waste reduction strategies, such as the creation of value-added products, will benefit the economy, and this work is a good start in that direction.

To verify the priming effects of Maillard reaction precursors on the microbial decomposition of rice straw at different incubation temperatures, the method of indoor incubation at a constant temperature was adopted. In the process, the addition of glucose, catechol or glycine solution alone or in mixed solution was conducted at incubation temperatures of 10 °C, 15 °C and 28 °C, respectively. The C content of humic-extracted acid (CHLE), humification index (the ratio of C content of humic-like acid to fulvic-like acid, CHLA/CFLA), ∆logK value of humic-like acid (HLA), and C content of humin-like acid (CHLu) were dynamically analyzed at 0, 30, 60, and 90 d, respectively. At the same time, the differences in the atomic ratio and FTIR spectra before and after incubation were systematically analyzed. The results showed that (1) the additions of glucose alone and mixed precursors were both beneficial to increasing the CHLE content at three tested temperatures, especially at two low temperatures (10 °C and 15 °C), and glucose alone manifested the most significant improvement in CHLE. In contrast, following the addition of glycine alone, the CHLE content decreased by 2.4% at 15 °C and 4.6% at 28 °C after incubation. (2) Glucose as the sole precursor was more beneficial to improving the quality of the humic substance (HS) at 28 °C, but only enhanced the condensation degree of HLA molecules at 15 °C. Compared with the results at 15 °C and 28 °C, the HLA molecules had the lowest condensation degree at 10 °C, regardless of whether a single precursor or mixed Maillard precursors were used. (3) After incubation, the amounts of N compounds in the HLA molecules decreased to varying degrees, especially at 28 °C. The O-containing functional groups, such as carboxyl groups, from HLA molecules decreased following the addition of a single precursor, while the mixed precursors resulted in an increase in O-containing functional groups. Increasing the catechol content directly enriched the unsaturated bonds of HLA. With the decomposition of rice straw, regardless of how the precursors were added, the polysaccharide content decreased to different degrees. The decomposition of polysaccharides in HLA was more temperature-sensitive, and an increase in temperature might encourage more polysaccharide consumption. Under each temperature, the molecular structure of HLA was simplified initially and then gradually became complex. Finally, the addition of glucose alone at 15 °C was more favorable for the complexity of HLA molecules, while at 28 °C, it could only alleviate the degree of simplification of the HLA molecular structure to a certain extent. (4) At the three tested temperatures, compared with the CK control, either one precursor or a mixture of three precursors could more effectively promote the decomposition of CHLu. Under the conditions of 10 °C and 15 °C, the addition of mixed precursors was more beneficial to the decomposition of CHLu, causing the CHLu content to decrease by 37.9% and 44.7%, respectively, followed by the addition of glucose alone.

This study investigates the feasibility of rice straw for energy production in Cambodia. The potential areas for a 10 MW biomass-fired power plant installation are estimated based on rice straw availability displayed in a graphic information system (GIS). The discounted cash flow (DCF) method on the profitability index (PI) was executed by Mathlab software, which was used to determine the period of the power plant profitability. The reduction of CO and CO2 emissions from the proposed rice straw biomass-fired power plant with 10 MW capacity was calculated and compared with the coal-fired power plant and open field burning. Prey Veng, Takeo, and Battambang are potential provinces that have an estimated rice straw source of 804,796 t/annum, 720,040 t/annum, and 603,273 t/annum, respectively. Within a 20-year project, the biomass-fired power plant can reach profitability between six and ten years with the operation of the rice-straw price of 20 USD/t to 40 USD/t. The total energy produced by these potential areas is 1251 GWh/annum, with a CO2 emission avoidance of 1.06 million t/annum compared to the coal-fired power plant operation. Simultaneously, the emission savings of the biomass-fired power plant compared to open-field burning are 0.61 million t/annum of CO2 and 0.02 million t/annum of CO in the study site. The findings are prospectively essential for further designing of a small-scale biomass-fired power plant in Cambodia.

This study aimed to investigate the effect of fibrolytic enzymes, cellulolytic fungi and lactic acid bacteria on the fermentation quality, structural carbohydrate composition and in vitro digestibility of rice straw silage. This experiment followed a completely randomised block design; four treatments were designed: (1) distilled water (control, CON); (2) fibrolytic enzymes (2.0 g/kg fresh weight (FW), E); (3) Trichoderma reesei (4400 U/kg FW, F); (4) Enterococcus faecium Y83 (1 × 106 cfu/g FW, Y83). All additives were diluted with distilled water and sprayed onto the rice straw (20 mL/kg FW). The rice straw was placed into a laboratory silo (10 L) after uniformly mixing and stored at ambient temperature (17–22 °C) ensiling for 3, 7, 14, 30 and 60 days. The fermentation quality in treated silages was improved compared to the CON, as indicated by lower pH, propionic acid, acetic acid and ammonia nitrogen (NH3-N) contents. Furthermore, Y83 had the lowest (p < 0.05) pH and highest (p < 0.05) lactic acid content after 60 days of ensiling. Y83 significantly (p < 0.05) decreased the neutral detergent fibre content compared with CON, E and F. In addition, E and Y83 had significantly (p < 0.05) higher in vitro dry matter digestibility and in vitro neutral detergent fibre digestibility than CON and F. Overall, Y83 can be used as a promising inoculant for improving the fermentation quality of rice straw silage.

Rice straw is not easy to decompose, it takes a long time to compost, and the anaerobic bacteria involved in the decomposition process produce a large amount of carbon dioxide (CO 2 ), indicating that applications for rice straw need to be developed. Recycling rice straw in agricultural crops is an opportunity to increase the sustainability of grain production. Several studies have shown that the probiotic population gradually decreases in the soil, leading to an increased risk of plant diseases and decreased biomass yield. Because the microorganisms in the soil are related to the growth of plants, when the soil microbial community is imbalanced it seriously affects plant growth. We investigated the feasibility of using composted rice stalks to artificially cultivate microorganisms obtained from the Oryza sativa -planted environment for analyzing the mycobiota and evaluating applications for sustainable agriculture. Microbes obtained from the water-submerged part (group-A) and soil part (group-B) of O. sativa were cultured in an artificial medium, and the microbial diversity was analyzed with internal transcribed spacer sequencing. Paddy field soil was mixed with fermented paddy straw compost, and the microbes obtained from the soil used for O. sativa planting were designated as group-C. The paddy fields transplanted with artificially cultured microbes from group-A were designated as group-D and those from group-B were designated as group-E. We found that fungi and yeasts can be cultured in groups-A and -B. These microbes altered the soil mycobiota in the paddy fields after transplantation in groups-D and -E compared to groups-A and -B. Development in O. sativa post treatment with microbial transplantation was observed in the groups-D and -E compared to group-C. These results showed that artificially cultured microorganisms could be efficiently transplanted into the soil and improve the mycobiota. Phytohormones were involved in improving O. sativa growth and rice yield via the submerged part-derived microbial medium (group-D) or the soil part-derived microbial medium (group-E) treatments. Collectively, these fungi and yeasts may be applied in microbial transplantation via rice straw fermentation to repair soil mycobiota imbalances, facilitating plant growth and sustainable agriculture. Worldwide energy costs have grown in recent years due to the dwindling global fossil fuel resources and the increased reliance on them for global energy production. This is a common scenario in many nations, including Sri Lanka. As a developing country, Sri Lanka should encourage the diversification of its renewable energy supplies using locally available resources. In this regard, Sri Lanka can promote the use of agricultural residues for energy generation. The present work explores the energy potential of the solid waste generated by the rice industry: rice straw (RS) and rice husk (RH). A new approach was developed using statistical data on rice production and paddy cultivation in each district of the island. The obtained data were integrated into a geographic information system (GIS) to provide geo-referenced results. A physico-chemical characterization of the RS and RH was conducted to correlate the properties of raw materials to their potential energy generation. As an energy generation technology, the grate-fired combustion boiler accompanied by steam turbine cycle (GFC/ST) was selected. Our findings show that the total energy capacity using by-products of the rice industry is estimated to be 2129.24 ktoe/year of primary energy, with a capacity of 977 Mwe, producing 5.65 TWh of electricity annually. An economic analysis shows ten districts have a high profit index (PI > 1). The districts with the highest PI values are Anuradhapura, Ampara, Polonnaruwa, and Kurunegala, with annual energy potentials of 286 ktoe, 279 ktoe, 231 ktoe, and 160 ktoe, respectively. This work aims to aid future policy decisions by identifying potential districts in which to develop infrastructure for energy generation using agricultural waste, thus reducing net greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) of Sri Lanka.

The treatment of oilfield wastewater with high crude oil content and complex composition is a problem requiring considerable attention. In order to effectively remove crude oil contained in wastewater, in this work, rice straw, as an oil-absorbing material, was modified and used as a sorbent for crude oil. Rice straw was modified with alkali and cetyltrimethylammonium chloride (CTAC) by simple substitution reaction. The adsorption capacity of modified rice straw for oil was evaluated. The results illustrate that the adsorption rate of rice straw for crude oil was increased from 0.83 to 8.49 g/g, with the optimal conditions of 18% NaOH reacted for 90 min at 50 °C and 2% CTAC reacted for 60 min at 20 °C. The proposed modification method could be used for different materials to enhance the adsorption rate. The results of the contact angle test show that the modified straw changed from hydrophilic to hydrophobic, which may be the main reason for the improvement in the oil absorption rate. Finally, the surface structure of rice straw was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and N2 adsorption–desorption isotherms, which further confirmed the hydrophobicity of the modified rice straw.

This study evaluated the variation in bioactive compounds (anthocyanins, phenols, and antioxidants) among 22 rice varieties in the same growing locations and among four varieties collected from eight different provinces in Northern Thailand. Wide variation in anthocyanins, phenols, and antioxidant capacity was established, ranging from 1.6 to 33.0 mg/100 g, 249.9 to 477.7 mg gallic acid/100 g, and 0 to 3,288.5 mg trolox equivalent/100 g, respectively. The highest straw anthocyanin and phenol concentrations were found in KDK (a traditional photoperiod-sensitive variety with purple pericarp and leaves) and K4 (an advanced, photoperiod-insensitive variety with purple pericarp and leaves), while the highest antioxidant capacity was found in KH CMU (an improved traditional photoperiod sensitive variety with a purple pericarp and green leaves) and K4. The variation of the bioactive compounds was also found in the same variety grown at different locations, e.g., the KDMl105 grown in Prayao province had a straw anthocyanin concentration higher than when grown in Mae Hong Son province. The effect was also observed in phenol content and antioxidant capacity when the same rice variety was grown across various locations. A significant correlation between total phenol and antioxidant capacity was observed across rice varieties and growing locations but was not found between anthocyanin and antioxidant capacity. This study found that the bioactive compounds in rice straw varied among rice varieties and growing locations. Straw phenol acts as a major antioxidant that can be used as a characteristic for the selection of rice varieties with high antioxidant capacity for use at the industrial scale for the processing of food, pharmaceuticals, and medicinal products.

Rice is a staple crop best known for its crucial role in feeding humans. In Cambodia, the human population depends on rice as its staple food. Increased rice production results in an increase in straw residue. The extensive residue caused by straw burning significantly contributes to high concentrations of air pollution, which are associated with critical health issues. As such, our objective in this study was to assess the human health impact of rice straw production in Cambodia. In this assessment, we focused on primary and secondary fine particulate matter formation (PM2.5, NH3, NOx, and SO2) from fertilizer, combustion of fuel in rice production processing, and burning of straw. We assessed endpoint impact by the following methods: (1) We estimated the proportion of rice straw from the annual rice production of the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries (MAFF) of Cambodia subjected to open burning in all 25 Cambodian provinces. (2) We calculated air pollutants emissions in terms of kilograms of pollutants per ton of rice produced by following the air pollutant emission inventory (EI) in the EMEP/EEA Guidebook for 2019, using data for fertilizer and fuel combustion that was applied in the field, based on a face-to-face survey of farmers. (3) We analyzed health impact in terms of DALYs using the characterization factor (CF) adapted from the ReCiPe 2016 v1.1 method. The results showed that the total health impact of rice straw production was 13,093.50 DALYs. Our analysis showed that open burning alone contributed 98.55% of the total health impact considered in this study, while fertilizers and combustion contributed only 0.12% and 1.33%, respectively. As the major of the total health impact arose from open burning, a policy of zero open burnings should be an effective way to reduce health impacts. These findings provide information for policymakers on how to alleviate air quality issues caused by the practice of open straw burning by adopting alternative techniques of rice straw management.

Agricultural residues are suitable to make useful products that can potentially replace the non-biodegradable polymeric materials. In the present work, corn cob and rice S=straw is quantitatively transformed to cellulose by alkali treatment preceded by bleaching. The obtained cellulose is changed into nanocellulose (NC) by the acid hydrolysis method followed by ultrasonication. Further NC was characterized by FTIR to study its functional regions and XRD for crystallinity. Thermal properties have been studied using TGA/DTA. The surface morphology of nanocellulose was done using SEM and TEM. The obtained results revealed remarkable thermal stability, semi-crystalline and fibrous nature of both corn cob and rice straw. The size of the cellulose is in the nanoscale dimension. This work provides the way to utilize corn cob and rice straw as a more useful raw material for many applications.

Unsustainable rice straw management causes environmental impacts; hence, utilisation of rice straw for bioenergy is a promising strategy for sustainable rice straw management. Although rice straw has a high potential for bioenergy generation, the whole production cycle and application may cause environmental damage that is not fully understood. Hence, environmental performance studies are required to determine the most effective rice straw utilisation options. A comprehensive approach, such as life-cycle assessment (LCA), can give comprehensive information on the possible environmental effects of rice straw utilisation for bioenergy. Therefore, this study briefly overviews the LCA of rice straw utilisation for bioenergy production. It is found that utilisation of rice straw for bioenergy could reduce global warming potential compared to energy production from fossil fuels. However, it is suggested that other impact categories in LCA be evaluated in the bioenergy production from rice straw research to determine the overall sustainability of the production.

The briquetting technology of rice straw could increase the bulk density of the straw, reduce transportation and storage costs, and improve resource utilization. This paper analyzed the working principle of the air-conveying integrated device in briquetting machines. High-speed photography technology was used to track and record the movement process of crushed straw material in the air-conveying cylinder area. It was compared with the simulation results of the average velocity of crushed straw material to verify the reliability of the simulation. The results showed that the flow of straw scraps in the straw-shredding and air-conveying integrated device was relatively stable when the impeller speed was 630 r/min, the number of blades was three, the blades were tilted back 15°, and the radius of curvature of the air-conveying tube elbow was 700 mm. At the same time, the speed distribution was uniform, and the highest throwing speed reached 4.5 m/s to 4.8 m/s. After optimization, the average increase rate of briquette density was 2.61% and the average increase rate of briquette productivity was 2.52%. The fluid movement law of the straw-shredding and air-conveying integrated device studied in this paper could be used to optimize the air-conveying device, improve the efficiency of straw briquetting and the utilization rate of straw resources.

Various pretreatments are employed to increase the utilization of rice straw as a ruminant feed ingredient to minimize its negative environmental impact. However, an efficient alternative is still needed. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the ability of ammonia and/or white-rot fungi (Pleurotus ostreatus) to degrade lignin, increase the nutritional value, and enhance the rumen fermentability of rice straw. Rice straw was treated with ammonia and/or basidiomycete white-rot fungi (P. ostreatus) with untreated straw as control under solid-state fermentation employing a completely randomized design. The crude protein increased from 2.05% in the control to 3.47% in ammoniated rice straw, 5.24% in basidiomycete white-rot fungi (P. ostreatus), and 6.58% in ammoniated-basidiomycete white-rot fungi-treated (P. ostreatus) rice straw. The ammoniated-basidiomycete white-rot fungi-treated (P. ostreatus) rice straw had the least lignin content (3.76%). Ammoniated-basidiomycete white-rot fungi-treated (P. ostreatus) rice straw had improved in vitro dry matter digestibility (65.52%), total volatile fatty acid (76.56 mM), and total gas production (56.78 mL/g) compared to ammoniated rice straw (56.16%, 67.71 mM, 44.30 mL/g) or basidiomycete white-rot fungi-treated (P. ostreatus) rice straw (61.12%, 75.36 mM, 49.31 mL/g), respectively. The ammoniated-basidiomycete white-rot fungi (P. ostreatus) treatment improved rice straw’s nutritional value, in vitro dry matter digestibility, volatile fatty acids, and gas production.

This study aims to clarify the effect of rice straw combined with inorganic fertilizer on the grain-filling characteristics and yield formation of common buckwheat (Fagopyrum esculentum Moench) and provide a scientific basis for straw fertilizer utilization and the scientific fertilization of common buckwheat in Guizhou Province.Common buckwheat ‘Fengtian1’ was field-grown and treated with no straw and no fertilization (CK), no straw with normal fertilizer (SF), full straw with 20% reduction in conventional fertilization (SH), full straw with 40% reduction in conventional fertilization (SM), full straw with 80% reduction inconventional fertilization (SL), and full straw with no fertilization (HT). The results showed that the initial growth power (R0), maximum and average grain-filling rate, and starch synthase activity of the superior grains were higher than those of the inferior grains. Compared with CK, the treatments with straw and inorganic fertilizers remarkably increased the contents of available nitrogen, available potassium, available phosphorus, and organic matter in the rhizosphere of common buckwheat. SH and SF treatments remarkablyimproved the fertilizer contribution rate and fertilizer agronomic utilization rate, promoted root growth, and enhanced the starch branching enzyme and soluble starch synthase activities of superior and inferior grains. Compared with CK, SH treatment considerably increased the number of grains per plant, grain weight per plant, 100-grain weight, and final yield. Thus, straw combined with inorganic fertilizers, particularlythe SH treatment, should be recommended as an agronomic method for promoting grain filling and increasing the yield of common buckwheat.

In the comprehensive development and utilization of crop straw, it is key to separate the fibers in the straw through a certain process or equipment. In order to obtain rice straw fiber material, the straw fiber crusher was designed using SOLIDWORKS software, and its grinding process was simulated using EDEM software to verify the feasibility of the machine principle and structural rationality. The grinding wheel speed, screw feed shaft speed, and grinding wheel clearance were used as test factors to design a three-factor, five-level test using Design Expert 13, obtaining a grinding wheel speed of 1250 r·min−1, a screw feed shaft speed of 40 r·min−1, and a wheel clearance 0.21 mm, which can achieve a theoretical kWh output of 45.8 kg/(kW·h) and a tensile index of 112.5 N·mg−1. We aimed to establish a model of the pore channel of the specimen, analyze the characteristics of the model within the unit area of different specimens, investigate the intrinsic relationship between the tensile index and the image pore channel coefficient of the straw fiber specimen, and to verify the feasibility and rationality of using the tensile index to evaluate the quality of straw fiber.

The development of new and improvement of existing technologies based on the use of waste products from various industries or recyclable materials is a current trend in the construction industry. Including in the composition of binders and concrete by-products of industry, reducing the proportion of Portland cement, it is crucial to maintain and improve the resulting products’ mechanical characteristics and life cycle. The main aim of the study was to investigate the influence of biochar additive on the microstructure and properties of the concrete and obtain the composition with improved characteristics due to nanomodification of rice straw recycled biochar. An environmentally friendly technology for concrete manufacture was obtained, using agricultural waste, rice straw, as its components, developing a composition of concrete nanomodified with processed rice straw biochar, identifying the dependences of concrete properties on their nanomodification with processed rice straw coal. It has been established that the most effective dosage is the addition of rice straw biochar in the amount of 6% by weight of cement. The improvement in the properties of concrete was expressed in the increase in its physical and mechanical characteristics and changes in deformability according to the results of the analysis of the stress-strain diagrams. The increase in strength characteristics ranged from 17% to 25%. The modulus of elasticity increased to 14%. The deformation characteristics decreased from 12% to 24%. Introducing a finely dispersed additive of rice straw biochar modified by the electromagnetic method leads to a decrease in cement consumption by up to 10%.
