Radiation hardening is studied for stainless austenitic and ferritic-martensitic chromium steels after ion and neutron irradiation at various temperatures. Austenitic and ferritic-martensitic steels irradiated up to 30 dpa in various nuclear reactors and ion accelerators are studied at various temperatures. A change in Vickers microhardness is used as the radiation hardening parameter. A methodology is developed that allows one to determine the ion irradiation parameters, which ensure the radiation hardening of ferritic-martensitic and austenitic steels, as close as possible to the radiation hardening of the same steels under neutron irradiation. A transferability function is introduced to connect the irradiation temperatures for ion and neutron irradiation that provides the same radiation hardening. On the basis of the obtained experimental data, after ion and neutron irradiation the transferability functions are determined for the investigated austenitic and ferritic-martensitic steels, which connect the temperatures for ion and neutron irradiation and provide the same radiation hardening at a given damage dose.

Solid-state additive friction stir deposition (AFSD) is a thermomechanical-based additive manufacturing technique. For this study, AFSD was utilized to produce aluminum alloy 6061 (AA6061) blocks with varying layer thicknesses (1 mm, 2 mm, and 3 mm). The mechanical properties were assessed through uniaxial tensile tests and Vickers microhardness measurement, and statistical analysis was employed to investigate differences among data groups. The results revealed that the deposition layer thickness influences tensile properties in the building (Z) direction, while the properties in the X and Y directions showed minor differences across the three AFSD blocks. Furthermore, variations in tensile properties were observed depending on the sample orientation in the AFSD blocks and its depth-wise position in the part in the building direction. The microhardness values decreased non-linearly along the building direction, spread across the width of the part’s cross-section, and highlighted that the deposition layer thickness significantly affects this property. The 1 mm block exhibited lower average microhardness values than the 2 mm and 3 mm blocks. The temperature histories and dynamic heat treatment are influenced by the deposition layer thickness and depend on the location of the point being studied in the part, resulting in variations in the microstructure and mechanical properties along the building direction and across the part’s width.

This study investigated the impact of samarium and lanthanum fluorides (SmF3 and LaF3) on the physical and mechanical properties of Tl0.8Hg0.2Ba2Ca2−xRxCu3O9−δ−yFy superconducting phases (specifically the (Tl, Hg)-1223 phase), where R = Sm and La, with 0.00 ≤ x ≤ 0.10. The superconducting samples were synthesized using the solid-state reaction method. X-ray diffraction (XRD) verified the formation of the (Tl, Hg)-1223 phase without altering its tetragonal structure. Scanning electron micrographs (SEM) reveal the improvement of the grain size and inter-grain connectivity as Sm and La contents increased up to x=0.025. The electrical properties of (Tl, Hg)-1223 were studied using I-V and electrical resistivity measurements. Improved superconducting transition temperature (Tc) and transport critical current density (Jc) were observed up to x=0.025, beyond which they decreased substantially. Vickers microhardness (Hv) measurements were performed at room temperature to investigate their mechanical performance with various applied loads (0.49–9.80 N) and times (10–90 s). For both substitutions, the mechanical properties were enhanced up to an optimal value at x=0.025. All samples exhibited normal indentation size effect (ISE) behavior. The proportional sample resistance (PSR) model best explained Hv values among five theoretical models. Dislocation creep was the primary creep mechanism in the samples, according to indentation creep studies.

A new eugenyl dimethacrylated monomer (symbolled BisMEP) has recently been synthesized. It showed promising viscosity and polymerizability as resin for dental composite. As a new monomer, BisMEP must be assessed further; thus, various physical, chemical, and mechanical properties have to be investigated. In this work, the aim was to investigate the potential use of BisMEP in place of the BisGMA matrix of resin-based composites (RBCs), totally or partially. Therefore, a list of model composites (CEa0, CEa25, CEa50, and CEa100) were prepared, which made up of 66 wt% synthesized silica fillers and 34 wt% organic matrices (BisGMA and TEGDMA; 1:1 wt/wt), while the novel BisMEP monomer has replaced the BisGMA content as 0.0, 25, 50, and 100 wt%, respectively. The RBCs were analyzed for their degree of conversion (DC)-based depth of cure at 1 and 2 mm thickness (DC1 and DC2), Vickers hardness (HV), water uptake (WSP), and water solubility (WSL) properties. Data were statistically analyzed using IBM SPSS v21, and the significance level was taken as p < 0.05. The results revealed no significant differences (p > 0.05) in the DC at 1 and 2 mm depth for the same composite. No significant differences in the DC between CEa0, CEa25, and CEa50; however, the difference becomes substantial (p < 0.05) with CEa100, suggesting possible incorporation of BisMEP at low dosage. Furthermore, DC1 for CEa0–CEa50 and DC2 for CEa0–CEa25 were found to be above the proposed minimum limit DC of 55%. Statistical analysis of the HV data showed no significant difference between CEa0, CEa25, and CEa50, while the difference became statistically significant after totally replacing BisGMA with BisMEP (CEa100). Notably, no significant differences in the WSP of various composites were detected. Likewise, WSL tests revealed no significant differences between such composites. These results suggest the possible usage of BisMEP in a mixture with BisGMA with no significant adverse effect on the DC, HV, WSP, and degradation (WSL).

This study evaluated the structural changes of enamel treated by the Regenerate system and carbon dioxide (CO2) laser against acid challenge. Thirty human enamel slabs were prepared and assigned into three groups: Group I: untreated (control); Group II: treated with the Regenerate system; and Group III exposed to CO2 laser. All specimens were subjected to an acid challenge (pH 4.5–7.0) for 14 days. Specimens were evaluated and compared at 120 points using five Raman microspectroscopic peaks; the phosphate vibrations ν1, ν2, ν3, and ν4 at 960, 433, 1029, and 579 cm−1, respectively, and the carbonate at 1070 cm−1, followed by Vickers microhardness test. The ratio of carbonate to phosphate was correlated to the equivalent microhardness numbers. The intensities of phosphate peaks ν1, ν2, and ν4 were reduced in all groups post-acid challenge, while the carbonate and ν3 were significantly increased (p < 0.000). Surfaces treated by Regenerate exhibited higher peak intensity of phosphate and carbonate before and after pH-cycling (p < 0.05). The mineral content in enamel had a direct effect on tissue microhardness, and the CO2-lased surfaces showed a reduced carbonate content and higher microhardness values. Both approaches induced surface changes that can protect enamel against acid challenge resulting in a significant benefit for dental healthcare.

A precise evaluation of caries excavation endpoint is essential in clinical and laboratory investigations. Caries invasion differentiates dentin into structurally altered layers. This study assessed these changes using Raman spectroscopy and Vickers microhardness. Ten permanent molars with occlusal and proximal carious lesions were assessed and compared at 130 points utilizing four Raman spectroscopic peaks: phosphate v1 at 960 cm−1, amide I (1650 cm−1), amide III (1235 cm−1) and the C-H bond of the pyrrolidine ring (1450 cm−1). The phosphate-to-amide I peak ratio and collagen integrity peak ratio (amide III: C-H bond) of carious zones were calculated and compared in both lesions. The former ratio was correlated to 130 Vickers microhardness indentations through lesions. The caries-infected dentin (CID) exhibited low phosphate peak, but higher amide I, III and C-H bond peaks than other zones in both lesions. The peaks in amide regions (I and III) varied in occlusal versus proximal lesions. A high correlation was found between mineral: matrix peak ratio and equivalent microhardness number within carious lesions, while the collagen integrity peak ratio was applied in proximal lesions only. Raman spectroscopy detected changes in the mineral and matrix contents within different carious zones and regions.

For the machining of long and narrow surfaces and when processing multiple pieces, planing technology is used, the productivity of which can be higher than that of milling, although it is relatively slow machining. The article aims to study the degree of influence of the geometry of the tool (the angle of cutting-edge inclination and the angle of the tool-orthogonal rake), as well as the cutting conditions (cutting depth and cutting speed) on the chip characteristics (temperature and microhardness) in orthogonal and oblique slow-rate machining of steel 1.0503 (EN C45). The experiments were carried out on specially prepared workpieces designed for immediate stopping of machining. The results of the experiments were statistically processed, and behavioural models were created for temperature and Vickers microhardness of chips for individual combinations of factors. The obtained dependencies revealed how the geometry of the cutting tool and the cutting conditions affect the temperature and microhardness in the cutting area and at the same time allowed the best conditions for both orthogonal and oblique machining to be set up.

In this study, constrained studded pressing (CSP) was modified to produce ultra-fine-grained copper sheets and is called modified-CSP. In modified-CSP, due to the selection of asymmetric semicircle studs, the maximum groove depth can increase up to three times the sheet thickness. In the CSP method, the groove depth is selected to be equal to the sheet thickness. To investigate the effective plastic strain, a finite element model (FEM) of modified-CSP was established. For this purpose, DEFORM-3D commercial software was used. A simulation showed that the modified-CSP process was capable of using higher strain, about 0.8 in each pass than in CSP. Copper sheets were deformed up to 10 passes by modified-CSP. The microstructure of the produced samples was analyzed. The results show that the grain size decreases in the first pass. In addition, with increasing plastic strain, the structure of the twins bands was observed. Mechanical properties, including tensile properties and Vickers microhardness, of the samples during the process were investigated. The strain inhomogeneity factor (SIF) and the hardness inhomogeneity factor (HIF) were used to quantitatively express the uniformity of distribution of effective plastic strain and Vickers microhardness, respectively. Compared with CSP and constrained groove pressing (CGP), the results showed that although the ultimate tensile strength (UTS) has significantly increased, the ductility values have remained almost constant. Moreover, in modified-CSP, the load-die stroke diagram increases almost evenly due to the removal of the stud interface area and progressive engagement. Therefore, modified-CSP copper sheets showed superior tensile properties such as good toughness.

Bone is a nanocomposite material where the hard inorganic (hydroxyapatite crystallites) and organic (collagen fibrils) components are hierarchically arranged in the nanometer scale. Bone quality is dependent on the spatial distributions in the shape, size and composition of bone constituents (mineral, collagen and water). Bone hardness is an important property of bone, which includes both elastic and plastic deformation. In this study, a microhardness test was performed on a deer bone samples. The deer tibia shaft (diaphysis) was divided into several cross-sections of equal thickness; samples were prepared in untreated, boiled water treatment (100 °C for 30 min) and sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) treatment conditions. Microhardness tests were performed on various regions of the tibial diaphysis to study the heterogeneous characteristics of bone microhardness and highlight the role of the organic matrix in bone hardness. The results indicated that boiled water treatment has a strong negative correlation with bone hardness. The untreated bone was significantly (+20%) harder than the boiled-water-treated bone. In general, the hardness values near the periosteal surface was significantly (23 to 45%) higher than the ones near the endosteal surface. Samples treated with NaOCl showed a significant reduction in hardness.

Welding is a widely used process that requires continuous developments to meet new application demands of mechanical projects under severe conditions. The homogeneity of metallurgical and mechanical properties in welded joints is the key factor for any welding process. The applications of external magnetic fields, mechanical vibration, and ultrasound are the fundamental steps to achieve success in improving these properties. The present work aimed at determining suitable processing conditions to achieve the desired balance between metallurgical and mechanical properties of 304L steel in TIG (Tungsten Inert Gas) welding under the application of an external magnetic field. The microstructural characteristics of the weld bead were analyzed by optical microscopy (OM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). In order to evaluate the mechanical properties of the welded specimen, its Vickers microhardness map and Charpy impact energy at −20 °C were obtained. In addition, corrosion tests were carried out in the saline medium to compare the corrosion resistance of the joint with that of the base metal and that without the magnetic field. It was found that the external magnetic field decreased the percentage of delta ferrite, improved the filling of the weld pool with the weld metal, and decreased the primary and secondary dendritic spacings. The Vickers microhardness value under the magnetic field was found to be lower than that without the magnetic field, and the Charpy test showed no significant variation in energy absorption. Moreover, the welded joint produced under the external magnetic field manifested less resistance to corrosion.

Near-fault coal displays some specific structural and textural features. As the distance to the fault diminishes, one can observe ever stronger, gradual degradation of coal, demonstrated by the emergence of structural distortions exogenic in their origin, visible under a microscope. The process of gradual degradation of coal—manifested by the appearance of structural distortions exogenic in their origin—takes place. This can be observed under a microscope. The measurements of the microhardness of structurally altered coal carried out using the Vickers hardness test. For the purpose of this research, a microhardness tester by the CSM Instruments was used. The microhardness of particular structural types of coal was measured. The procedure encompassed both structurally unaltered and altered coal. The tested objects were exogenically fractured fragments, cataclastic, and mylonitic structures. Each of the analyzed structural types displayed a different range of the microhardness, with the highest values confirmed for the structurally unaltered coal. In the case of fractured coal, the microhardness values were somewhat lower. Finally, the lowest values were ascertained for cataclastic coal. Mylonitic coal, in turn, displayed microhardness values similar to those found in the unaltered coal. It was also observed that, in the case of the unaltered, fractured, and cataclastic coal, cracks propagated in the manner typical of brittle materials, whereas the mylonitic coal revealed some degree of elasticity. The analyzed microhardness parameters expose the structural−textural features of coal, particularly when it comes to the degree and character of destruction of the rock’s original matrix. The specific structural−textural composition of particular types of near-fault creations influences both their sorption parameters and the compactness of coal in a seam.

In this study, the change in microstructure and microhardness adjacent to the tool during the friction stir processing (FSP) of 6061-T6 extrusions was investigated. Results showed that the as-received extrusions contained Fe-rich constituent particles with two distinct size distributions: coarse particles in bands and finer particles in the matrix. After FSP, Fe-containing particles exhibited single-size distribution and the coarse particles appeared to be completely eliminated through refinement. Microhardness tests showed the presence of four distinct zones and that hardness increased progressively from the dynamically recrystallized closest to the tool, outward through two distinct zones to the base material. The similarities and differences between the results of this study and others in the literature are discussed in detail.

The scope of this work was to create, with melt mixing compounding process, novel nanocomposite filaments with enhanced properties that industry can benefit from, using commercially available materials, to enhance the performance of three-dimensional (3D) printed structures fabricated via fused filament fabrication (FFF) process. Silicon Dioxide (SiO 2 ) nanoparticles (NPs) were selected as fillers for a polylactic acid (PLA) thermoplastic matrix at various weight % (wt.%) concentrations, namely, 0.5, 1.0, 2.0 and 4.0 wt.%. Tensile, flexural and impact test specimens were 3D printed and tested according to international standards and their Vickers microhardness was also examined. It was proven that SiO 2 filler enhanced the overall strength at concentrations up to 1 wt.%, compared to pure PLA. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) was employed to investigate the produced nanocomposite extruded filaments roughness. Raman spectroscopy was performed for the 3D printed nanocomposites to verify the polymer nanocomposite structure, while thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) revealed the 3D printed samples' thermal stability. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was carried out for the interlayer fusion and fractography morphological characterization of the specimens. Finally, the antibacterial properties of the produced nanocomposites were investigated with a screening process, to evaluate their performance against Escherichia coli ( E. coli ) and Staphylococcus aureus ( S. aureus ).
