Emotions fluctuate during the process of social interaction. Although the co-creation of emotions through organizational behavior has been discussed theoretically in existing research, there is no method to demonstrate how emotions are co-created. Instead, previous studies have paid much attention to empathy, in which a person’s emotions are contagious. In contrast to self-report, which is a traditional method that can only assess emotions at a single point in time and adapts to empathy, biometric technology has made it possible to analyze emotional fluctuations over time. However, previous studies have focused only on understanding the emotional fluctuations of individuals separately. In the present study, we developed a system to measure the co-creation of emotions using a wearable device. The pulse rate was converted into valence as a positive–negative emotion, and the fluctuations in valence were analyzed by cross-correlation. We demonstrated the feasibility of the proposed system through triangulation by integrating biometrics with observation and self-report. The proposed system was verified to measure the co-creation of pair and group emotions using real-world data beyond laboratory settings. The present study contributes to business administration by proposing a critical concept for measuring the co-creation of emotions based on a constructionist approach.

Flexible, wearable, piezoresistive sensors have significant potential for applications in wearable electronics and electronic skin fields due to their simple structure and durability. Highly sensitive, flexible, piezoresistive sensors with the ability to monitor laryngeal articulatory vibration supply a new, more comfortable and versatile way to aid communication for people with speech disorders. Here, we present a piezoresistive sensor with a novel microstructure that combines insulating and conductive properties. The microstructure has insulating polystyrene (PS) microspheres sandwiched between a graphene oxide (GO) film and a metallic nanocopper-graphene oxide (n-Cu/GO) film. The piezoresistive performance of the sensor can be modulated by controlling the size of the PS microspheres and doping degree of the copper nanoparticles. The sensor demonstrates a high sensitivity of 232.5 kPa−1 in a low-pressure range of 0 to 0.2 kPa, with a fast response of 45 ms and a recovery time of 36 ms, while also exhibiting excellent stability. The piezoresistive performance converts subtle laryngeal articulatory vibration into a stable, regular electrical signal; in addition, there is excellent real-time monitoring capability of human joint movements. This work provides a new idea for the development of wearable electronic devices, healthcare, and other fields.

The objective identification of depression using physiological data has emerged as a significant research focus within the field of psychiatry. The advancement of wearable physiological measurement devices has opened new avenues for the identification of individuals with depression in everyday-life contexts. Compared to other objective measurement methods, wearables offer the potential for continuous, unobtrusive monitoring, which can capture subtle physiological changes indicative of depressive states. The present study leverages multimodal wristband devices to collect data from fifty-eight participants clinically diagnosed with depression during their normal daytime activities over six hours. Data collected include pulse wave, skin conductance, and triaxial acceleration. For comparison, we also utilized data from fifty-eight matched healthy controls from a publicly available dataset, collected using the same devices over equivalent durations. Our aim was to identify depressive individuals through the analysis of multimodal physiological measurements derived from wearable devices in daily life scenarios. We extracted static features such as the mean, variance, skewness, and kurtosis of physiological indicators like heart rate, skin conductance, and acceleration, as well as autoregressive coefficients of these signals reflecting the temporal dynamics. Utilizing a Random Forest algorithm, we distinguished depressive and non-depressive individuals with varying classification accuracies on data aggregated over 6 h, 2 h, 30 min, and 5 min segments, as 90.0%, 84.7%, 80.1%, and 76.0%, respectively. Our results demonstrate the feasibility of using daily wearable-derived physiological data for depression recognition. The achieved classification accuracies suggest that this approach could be integrated into clinical settings for the early detection and monitoring of depressive symptoms. Future work will explore the potential of these methods for personalized interventions and real-time monitoring, offering a promising avenue for enhancing mental health care through the integration of wearable technology.

In recent years, the growing number of vehicles on the road have exacerbated issues related to safety and traffic congestion. However, the advent of the Internet of Vehicles (IoV) holds the potential to transform mobility, enhance traffic management and safety, and create smarter, more interconnected road networks. This paper addresses key road safety concerns, focusing on driver condition detection, vehicle monitoring, and traffic and road management. Specifically, various models proposed in the literature for monitoring the driver’s health and detecting anomalies, drowsiness, and impairment due to alcohol consumption are illustrated. The paper describes vehicle condition monitoring architectures, including diagnostic solutions for identifying anomalies, malfunctions, and instability while driving on slippery or wet roads. It also covers systems for classifying driving style, as well as tire and emissions monitoring. Moreover, the paper provides a detailed overview of the proposed traffic monitoring and management solutions, along with systems for monitoring road and environmental conditions, including the sensors used and the Machine Learning (ML) algorithms implemented. Finally, this review also presents an overview of innovative commercial solutions, illustrating advanced devices for driver monitoring, vehicle condition assessment, and traffic and road management.

Wearable devices have revolutionized real-time health monitoring, yet challenges persist in enhancing their flexibility, weight, and accuracy. This paper presents the development of a wearable device employing a conductive polyacrylamide–lithium chloride–MXene (PLM) hydrogel sensor, an electronic circuit, and artificial intelligence (AI) for gait monitoring. The PLM sensor includes tribo-negative polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and tribo-positive polyurethane (PU) layers, exhibiting extraordinary stretchability (317% strain) and durability (1000 cycles) while consistently delivering stable electrical signals. The wearable device weighs just 23 g and is strategically affixed to a knee brace, harnessing mechanical energy generated during knee motion which is converted into electrical signals. These signals are digitized and then analyzed using a one-dimensional (1D) convolutional neural network (CNN), achieving an impressive accuracy of 100% for the classification of four distinct gait patterns: standing, walking, jogging, and running. The wearable device demonstrates the potential for lightweight and energy-efficient sensing combined with AI analysis for advanced biomechanical monitoring in sports and healthcare applications.

Wearable devices have a significant impact on society, and recent advancements in modern sensor technologies are opening up new possibilities for healthcare applications. Continuous vital sign monitoring using Internet of Things solutions can be a crucial tool for emergency management, reducing risks in rescue operations and ensuring the safety of workers. The massive amounts of data, high network traffic, and computational demands of a typical monitoring application can be challenging to manage with traditional infrastructure. Cloud computing provides a solution with its built-in resilience and elasticity capabilities. This study presents a Cloud-based monitoring architecture for remote vital sign tracking of paramedics and medical workers through the use of a mobile wearable device. The system monitors vital signs such as electrocardiograms and breathing patterns during work sessions, and it is able to manage real-time alarm events to a personnel management center. In this study, 900 paramedics and emergency workers were monitored using wearable devices over a period of 12 months. Data from these devices were collected, processed via Cloud infrastructure, and analyzed to assess the system’s reliability and scalability. The results showed a significant improvement in worker safety and operational efficiency. This study demonstrates the potential of Cloud-based systems and Internet of Things devices in enhancing emergency response efforts.

Researchers have attempted to control robotic hands and prostheses through biosignals but could not match the human hand. Surface electromyography records electrical muscle activity using non-invasive electrodes and has been the primary method in most studies. While surface electromyography-based hand motion decoding shows promise, it has not yet met the requirements for reliable use. Combining different sensing modalities has been shown to improve hand gesture classification accuracy. This work introduces a multimodal bracelet that integrates a 24-channel force myography system with six commercial surface electromyography sensors, each containing a six-axis inertial measurement unit. The device’s functionality was tested by acquiring muscular activity with the proposed device from five participants performing five different gestures in a random order. A random forest model was then used to classify the performed gestures from the acquired signal. The results confirmed the device’s functionality, making it suitable to study sensor fusion for intent detection in future studies. The results showed that combining all modalities yielded the highest classification accuracies across all participants, reaching 92.3±2.6% on average, effectively reducing misclassifications by 37% and 22% compared to using surface electromyography and force myography individually as input signals, respectively. This demonstrates the potential benefits of sensor fusion for more robust and accurate hand gesture classification and paves the way for advanced control of robotic and prosthetic hands.

Accurately obtaining a patient’s respiratory rate is crucial for promptly identifying any sudden changes in their condition during emergencies. Typically, the respiratory rate is assessed through a combination of impedance change measurements and electrocardiography (ECG). However, impedance measurements are prone to interference from body movements. Conversely, a capnometer coupled with a ventilator offers a method of measuring the respiratory rate that is unaffected by body movements. However, capnometers are mainly used to evaluate respiration when using a ventilator or an Ambu bag by measuring the CO2 concentration at the breathing circuit, and they are not used only to measure the respiratory rate. Furthermore, capnometers are not suitable as wearable devices because they require intubation or a mask that covers the nose and mouth to prevent air leaks during the measurement. In this study, we developed a reliable system for measuring the respiratory rate utilizing a small wearable MOx sensor that is unaffected by body movements and not connected to the breathing circuit. Subsequently, we conducted experimental assessments to gauge the accuracy of the rate estimation achieved by the system. In order to avoid the effects of abnormal states on the estimation accuracy, we also evaluated the classification performance for distinguishing between normal and abnormal respiration using a one-class SVM-based approach. The developed system achieved 80% for both true positive and true negative rates. Our experimental findings reveal that the respiratory rate can be precisely determined without being influenced by body movements.

Arrhythmias range from mild nuisances to potentially fatal conditions, detectable through electrocardiograms (ECGs). With advancements in wearable technology, ECGs can now be monitored on-the-go, although these devices often capture noisy data, complicating accurate arrhythmia detection. This study aims to create a new deep learning model that utilizes generative adversarial networks (GANs) for effective noise removal and ResNet for precise arrhythmia classification from wearable ECG data. We developed a deep learning model that cleans ECG measurements from wearable devices and detects arrhythmias using refined data. We pretrained our model using the MIT-BIH Arrhythmia and Noise databases. Least squares GANs were used for noise reduction, maintaining the integrity of the original ECG signal, while a residual network classified the type of arrhythmia. After initial training, we applied transfer learning with actual ECG data. Our noise removal model significantly enhanced data clarity, achieving over 30 dB in a signal-to-noise ratio. The arrhythmia detection model was highly accurate, with an F1-score of 99.10% for noise-free data. The developed model is capable of real-time, accurate arrhythmia detection using wearable ECG devices, allowing for immediate patient notification and facilitating timely medical response.

The monitoring of hemodynamic parameters, such as heart rate and blood pressure, provides valuable indications of overall cardiovascular health. It is preferable that such monitoring is non-invasive and in real time via an affordable, compact and small-scale device for maximum convenience. Numerous literature sources have exploited derivations of these parameters from photoplethysmogram (PPG) and electrical bioimpedance (EBI) signal measurements through the use of calculation algorithms of varying complexity. Compared to electrocardiogram (ECG), these measurement techniques have a merit of well-established practices of designing a wearable device that could conveniently be put on a wrist. The current paper provides a comprehensive review on the use of PPG and EBI measurement techniques in the context of hemodynamic parameter monitoring using a wearable device. A special emphasis is placed on the most basic hemodynamic parameter—heart rate—describing different algorithms of heart rate detection and monitoring. The last section provides an overview of commercially available and in-home wearable device technologies based on PPG and EBI measurements, their design challenges, and future prospects.

To diagnose diabetes early or to maintain stable blood glucose levels in diabetics, blood glucose levels should be frequently checked. However, the only way to check blood glucose levels regularly is to use invasive methods, such as pricking the fingertip or using a minimally invasive patch. These invasive methods pose several problems, including being painful and potentially causing secondary infections. This study focuses on noninvasively measuring glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) using PPG signals. In particular, the study relates to a method and a hardware design technology for removing noise that may be present in a PPG signal due to skin contact with a noninvasive HbA1c measurement device. The proposed HbA1c measurement device consists of the first sensor (PPG sensor) module including an optical barrier and the second sensor (cylindrical sensor) module for removing the skin effect. We have developed a Monte Carlo method to implement accurate, noninvasive HbA1c measurement by considering different skin properties among different subjects. Implementing this model in wearable devices will allow end users to not only monitor their glycated hemoglobin levels but also control diabetes with higher accuracy without needing any blood samples. This will be a groundbreaking advancement in modern wearable medical devices.

With the development of technology, people’s demand for pressure sensors with high sensitivity and a wide working range is increasing. An effective way to achieve this goal is simulating human skin. Herein, we propose a facile, low-cost, and reproducible method for preparing a skin-like multi-layer flexible pressure sensor (MFPS) device with high sensitivity (5.51 kPa−1 from 0 to 30 kPa) and wide working pressure range (0–200 kPa) by assembling carbonized fabrics and micro-wrinkle-structured Ag@rGO electrodes layer by layer. In addition, the highly imitated skin structure also provides the device with an extremely short response time (60/90 ms) and stable durability (over 3000 cycles). Importantly, we integrated multiple sensor devices into gloves to monitor finger movements and behaviors. In summary, the skin-like MFPS device has significant potential for real-time monitoring of human activities in the field of flexible wearable electronics and human–machine interaction.

A two-stream convolutional neural network (TCNN) for breathing pattern classification has been devised for the continuous monitoring of patients with infectious respiratory diseases. The TCNN consists of a convolutional neural network (CNN)-based autoencoder and classifier. The encoder of the autoencoder generates deep compressed feature maps, which contain the most important information constituting data. These maps are concatenated with feature maps generated by the classifier to classify breathing patterns. The TCNN, single-stream CNN (SCNN), and state-of-the-art classification models were applied to classify four breathing patterns: normal, slow, rapid, and breath holding. The input data consisted of chest tissue hemodynamic responses measured using a wearable near-infrared spectroscopy device on 14 healthy adult participants. Among the classification models evaluated, random forest had the lowest classification accuracy at 88.49%, while the TCNN achieved the highest classification accuracy at 94.63%. In addition, the proposed TCNN performed 2.6% better in terms of classification accuracy than an SCNN (without an autoencoder). Moreover, the TCNN mitigates the issue of declining learning performance with increasing network depth, as observed in the SCNN model. These results prove the robustness of the TCNN in classifying breathing patterns despite using a significantly smaller number of parameters and computations compared to state-of-the-art classification models.

BACKGROUND: This study aims to implement a set of wearable technologies to record and analyze the surgeon’s physiological and ergonomic parameters during the performance of conventional and robotic-assisted laparoscopic surgery, comparing the ergonomics and stress levels of surgeons during surgical procedures. METHODS: This study was organized in two different settings: simulator tasks and experimental model surgical procedures. The participating surgeons performed the tasks and surgical procedures in both laparoscopic and robotic-assisted surgery in a randomized fashion. Different wearable technologies were used to record the surgeons’ posture, muscle activity, electrodermal activity and electrocardiography signal during the surgical practice. RESULTS: The simulator study involved six surgeons: three experienced (>100 laparoscopic procedures performed; 36.33 ± 13.65 years old) and three novices (100 laparoscopic procedures performed; 37.00 ± 5.29 years old), but without experience in surgical robotics, participated in the experimental model study. The participating surgeons showed an increased level of stress during the robotic-assisted surgical procedures. Overall, improved surgeon posture was obtained during robotic-assisted surgery, with a reduction in localized muscle fatigue. CONCLUSIONS: A set of wearable technologies was implemented to measure and analyze surgeon physiological and ergonomic parameters. Robotic-assisted procedures showed better ergonomic outcomes for the surgeon compared to conventional laparoscopic surgery. Ergonomic analysis allows us to optimize surgeon performance and improve surgical training.

We propose the use of a specially designed polyurethane foam with a plateau region in its mechanical characteristics—where stress remains nearly constant during deformation—between the electromyography (EMG) electrode and clothing to suppress motion artifacts in EMG measurement. Wearable EMG devices are receiving attention for monitoring muscle weakening due to aging. However, daily EMG measurement has been challenging due to motion artifacts caused by changes in the contact pressure between the bioelectrode and the skin. Therefore, this study aims to measure EMG signals in daily movement environments by controlling the contact pressure using polyurethane foam between the bioelectrode on the clothing and the skin. Through mechanical calculations and finite element method simulations of the polyurethane foam’s effect, we clarified that the characteristics of the polyurethane foam significantly influence contact pressure control and that the contact pressure is adjustable through the polyurethane foam thickness. The optimization of the design successfully controlled the contact pressure between the bioelectrode and skin from 1.0 kPa to 2.0 kPa, effectively suppressing the motion artifact in EMG measurement.

This paper aims to discuss the implementation of data analysis and information management for elderly nursing care from a data-driven perspective. It addresses the current challenges of in-home caregivers, providing a basis for decision making in analyzing nursing service content and evaluating job performance. The characteristics of caregivers’ activities were analyzed during the design of a wearable device-wearing scheme and a sensor data collection system. XGBoost, SVM, and Random Forest models were used in the experiments, with the Cuckoo search algorithm employed to optimize the XGBoost model parameters. Based on the control group experiment, it was confirmed that the XGBoost model, after adjusting the parameters using the Cuckoo search algorithm, exhibited better recognition performance than the SVM and RandomForest models, and the accuracy reached 0.9438. Wearable devices present high recognition accuracy in caregiver activity recognition research, which greatly improves the inspection of caregivers’ work and further promotes the completion of services. This study actively explores the applications of information technology and artificial intelligence theory to address practical problems and effectively promote the digitalization and intelligent development of the elderly nursing care industry.

In recent days, a digestive abnormality is common due to modern life-style and food habits followed. For every ten adults in the world, four suffer from functional gastrointestinal (GI) disorders of varying severity. Further, this is demonstrated by a study of more than 73,000 people across 33 countries. Also, the subjects who have undergone surgery/medication may feel healthy and they cannot feel or realize the internal health disorders, resulting in severe consequences. In this regard, an electrogastrogram (EGG) has gained more significance since it is non-invasive and involves an easy process for screening digestive abnormalities. EGGs are electrical signals, which have strong association with digestion. Also, the EGG can be recorded using non-invasive/surface electrodes. In this work, two different conductive textile materials, namely stainless-steel fibers and Copper–Nickel-plated nylon, are utilised to fabricate non-invasive electrodes. Further, the developed electrodes are placed on the abdomen over the stomach and the EGG signals are acquired from healthy individuals. Also, various time and frequency domain features are extracted from two different EGG signals acquired using developed electrodes with different materials and are analysed. Additionally, the XAI, namely Shapley Additive Explanation (SHAP), technique is utilised to analyse and test the efficacy of the developed textile-based electrodes and to select the best electrode for EGG signal acquisition. This work appears to be highly significant since the developed electrode selected using the XAI tool shall possess a wide scope in wearable applications.

This work presents a smart mask for real-time monitoring of carbon dioxide (CO2) levels as a reference tool for diagnosis, sports training and mental health status. A printed circuit board was projected and fabricated to gain data with real-time visualization and storage on a database, enabling remote monitoring as a needed skill for telemedicine purposes. The electronics were inserted in a wearable device—shaped like a mask—and 3D-printed with biocompatible materials. The whole device was used for analyzing CO2 on a breath volunteer in three kinds of measurement.

An educational augmented reality auscultation system (EARS) is proposed to enhance the reality of auscultation training using a simulated patient. The conventional EARS cannot accurately reproduce breath sounds according to the breathing of a simulated patient because the system instructs the breathing rhythm. In this study, we propose breath measurement methods that can be integrated into the chest piece of a stethoscope. We investigate methods using the thoracic variations and frequency characteristics of breath sounds. An accelerometer, a magnetic sensor, a gyro sensor, a pressure sensor, and a microphone were selected as the sensors. For measurement with the magnetic sensor, we proposed a method by detecting the breathing waveform in terms of changes in the magnetic field accompanying the surface deformation of the stethoscope based on thoracic variations using a magnet. During breath sound measurement, the frequency spectra of the breath sounds acquired by the built-in microphone were calculated. The breathing waveforms were obtained from the difference in characteristics between the breath sounds during exhalation and inhalation. The result showed the average value of the correlation coefficient with the reference value reached 0.45, indicating the effectiveness of this method as a breath measurement method. And the evaluations suggest more accurate breathing waveforms can be obtained by selecting the measurement method according to breathing method and measurement point.

An electrocardiogram (ECG) is used to observe the electrical activity of the heart via electrodes on the body surface. Recently, an ECG with fewer electrodes, such as a bipolar ECG in which two electrodes are attached to the chest, has been employed as wearable devices. However, the effect of different geometrical factors and electrode-pair locations on the amplitude and waveform of ECG signals remains unclear. In this study, we computationally evaluated the effects of body morphology, heart size and orientation, and electrode misalignment on ECG signals for 48 scenarios using 35 bipolar electrode pairs (1680 waveforms) with a dynamic time warping (DTW) algorithm. It was observed that the physique of the human body model predominantly affected the amplitude and waveform of the ECG signals. A multivariate analysis indicated that the heart–electrode distance and the solid angle of the heart from the electrode characterized the amplitude and waveform of the ECG signals, respectively. Furthermore, the electrode locations for less individual variability and less waveform distortion were close to the location of electrodes V2 and V3 in the standard 12-lead. These findings will facilitate the placement of ECG electrodes and interpretation of the measured ECG signals for wearable devices.

Text input using hand gestures is an essential component of human–computer interaction technology, providing users with a more natural and enriching interaction experience. Nevertheless, the current gesture input methods have a variety of issues, including a high learning cost for users, poor input performance, and reliance on hardware. To solve these problems and better meet the interaction requirements, a hand recognition-based text input method called iHand is proposed in this paper. In iHand, a two-branch hand recognition algorithm combining a landmark model and a lightweight convolutional neural network is used. The landmark model is used as the backbone network to extract hand landmarks, and then an optimized classification head, which can preserve the space structure of landmarks, is designed to classify gestures. When the landmark model fails to extract hand landmarks, a lightweight convolutional neural network is employed for classification. Regarding the way letters are entered, to reduce the learning cost, the sequence of letters is mapped as a two-dimensional layout, and users can type with seven simple hand gestures. Experimental results on the public datasets show that the proposed hand recognition algorithm achieves high robustness compared to state-of-the-art approaches. Furthermore, we tested the performance of users’ initial use of iHand for text input. The results showed that the iHand’s average input speed was 5.6 words per minute, with the average input error rate was only 1.79%.

The remote monitoring of vital signs and healthcare provision has become an urgent necessity due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the world. Blood oxygen level, heart rate, and body temperature data are crucial for managing the disease and ensuring timely medical care. This study proposes a low-cost wearable device employing non-contact sensors to monitor, process, and visualize critical variables, focusing on body temperature measurement as a key health indicator. The wearable device developed offers a non-invasive and continuous method to gather wrist and forehead temperature data. However, since there is a discrepancy between wrist and actual forehead temperature, this study incorporates statistical methods and machine learning to estimate the core forehead temperature from the wrist. This research collects 2130 samples from 30 volunteers, and both the statistical least squares method and machine learning via linear regression are applied to analyze these data. It is observed that all models achieve a significant fit, but the third-degree polynomial model stands out in both approaches. It achieves an R2 value of 0.9769 in the statistical analysis and 0.9791 in machine learning.

Respiratory rate (fR) monitoring through wearable devices is crucial in several scenarios, providing insights into well-being and sports performance while minimizing interference with daily activities. Strain sensors embedded into garments stand out but require thorough investigation for optimal deployment. Optimal sensor positioning is often overlooked, and when addressed, the quality of the respiratory signal is neglected. Additionally, sensor metrological characterization after sensor integration is often omitted. In this study, we present the design, development, and feasibility assessment of a smart t-shirt embedded with two flexible sensors for fR monitoring. Guided by a motion capture system, optimal sensor design and position on the chest wall were defined, considering both signal magnitude and quality. The sensors were developed, embedded into the wearable system, and metrologically characterized, demonstrating a remarkable response to both static (sensitivity 9.4 Ω⋅%−1 and 9.1 Ω⋅%−1 for sensor A and sensor B, respectively) and cyclic loads (min. hysteresis span 20.4% at 36 bpm obtained for sensor A). The feasibility of the wearable system was assessed on healthy volunteers both under static and dynamic conditions (such as running, walking, and climbing stairs). A mean absolute error of 0.32 bpm was obtained by averaging all subjects and tests using the combination of the two sensors. This value was lower than that obtained using both sensor A (0.53 bpm) and sensor B (0.78 bpm) individually. Our study highlights the importance of signal amplitude and quality in optimal sensor placement evaluation, as well as the characterization of the embedded sensors for metrological assessment.

In this study, we propose a low-cost piezoelectric flexible pressure sensor fabricated on Kapton® (Kapton™ Dupont) substrate by using aluminum nitride (AlN) thin film, designed for the monitoring of the respiration rate for a fast detection of respiratory anomalies. The device was characterized in the range of 15–30 breaths per minute (bpm), to simulate moderate difficult breathing, borderline normal breathing, and normal spontaneous breathing. These three breathing typologies were artificially reproduced by setting the expiratory to inspiratory ratios (E:I) at 1:1, 2:1, 3:1. The prototype was able to accurately recognize the breath states with a low response time (~35 ms), excellent linearity (R2 = 0.997) and low hysteresis. The piezoelectric device was also characterized by placing it in an activated carbon filter mask to evaluate the pressure generated by exhaled air through breathing acts. The results indicate suitability also for the monitoring of very weak breath, exhibiting good linearity, accuracy, and reproducibility, in very low breath pressures, ranging from 0.09 to 0.16 kPa. These preliminary results are very promising for the future development of smart wearable devices able to monitor different patients breathing patterns, also related to breathing diseases, providing a suitable real-time diagnosis in a non-invasive and fast way.

Computer vision (CV)-based systems using cameras and recognition algorithms offer touchless, cost-effective, precise, and versatile hand tracking. These systems allow unrestricted, fluid, and natural movements without the constraints of wearable devices, gaining popularity in human–system interaction, virtual reality, and medical procedures. However, traditional CV-based systems, relying on stationary cameras, are not compatible with mobile applications and demand substantial computing power. To address these limitations, we propose a portable hand-tracking system utilizing the Leap Motion Controller 2 (LMC) mounted on the head and controlled by a single-board computer (SBC) powered by a compact power bank. The proposed system enhances portability, enabling users to interact freely with their surroundings. We present the system’s design and conduct experimental tests to evaluate its robustness under variable lighting conditions, power consumption, CPU usage, temperature, and frame rate. This portable hand-tracking solution, which has minimal weight and runs independently of external power, proves suitable for mobile applications in daily life.

Background: Diabetic neuropathy is one of the most common complications of diabetes mellitus. The aim of this study is to evaluate the Moveo device, a novel device that uses a machine learning (ML) algorithm to detect and track diabetic neuropathy. The Moveo device comprises 4 sensors positioned on the back of the hands and feet accompanied by a mobile application that gathers data and ML algorithms that are hosted on a cloud platform. The sensors measure movement signals, which are then transferred to the cloud through the mobile application. The cloud triggers a pipeline for feature extraction and subsequently feeds the ML model with these extracted features. Methods: The pilot study included 23 participants. Eleven patients with diabetes and suspected diabetic neuropathy were included in the experimental group. In the control group, 8 patients had suspected radiculopathy, and 4 participants were healthy. All participants underwent an electrodiagnostic examination (EDx) and a Moveo examination, which consists of sensors placed on the feet and back of the participant’s hands and use of the mobile application. The participant performs six tests that are part of a standard neurological examination, and a ML algorithm calculates the probability of diabetic neuropathy. A user experience questionnaire was used to compare participant experiences with regard to both methods. Results: The total accuracy of the algorithm is 82.1%, with 78% sensitivity and 87% specificity. A high linear correlation up to 0.722 was observed between Moveo and EDx features, which underpins the model’s adequacy. The user experience questionnaire revealed that the majority of patients preferred the less painful method. Conclusions: Moveo represents an accurate, easy-to-use device suitable for home environments, showing promising results and potential for future usage.

Wearable antennas have recently garnered significant attention due to their attractive properties and potential for creating lightweight, compact, low-cost, and multifunctional wireless communication systems. With the breakthrough progress in nanomaterial research, the use of lightweight materials has paved the way for the widespread application of wearable antennas. Compared with traditional metallic materials like copper, aluminum, and nickel, nanoscale entities including zero-dimensional (0-D) nanoparticles, one-dimensional (1-D) nanofibers or nanotubes, and two-dimensional (2-D) nanosheets exhibit superior physical, electrochemical, and performance characteristics. These properties significantly enhance the potential for constructing durable electronic composites. Furthermore, the antenna exhibits compact size and high deformation stability, accompanied by greater portability and wear resistance, owing to the high surface-to-volume ratio and flexibility of nanomaterials. This paper systematically discusses the latest advancements in wearable antennas based on 0-D, 1-D, and 2-D nanomaterials, providing a comprehensive overview of their development and future prospects in the field.

The use of wearable sensors for calculating gait parameters has become increasingly popular as an alternative to optoelectronic systems, currently recognized as the gold standard. The objective of the study was to evaluate the agreement between the wearable Opal system and the optoelectronic BTS SMART DX system for assessing spatiotemporal gait parameters. Fifteen subjects with progressive supranuclear palsy walked at their self-selected speed on a straight path, and six spatiotemporal parameters were compared between the two measurement systems. The agreement was carried out through paired data test, Passing Bablok regression, and Bland-Altman Analysis. The results showed a perfect agreement for speed, a very close agreement for cadence and cycle duration, while, in the other cases, Opal system either under- or over-estimated the measurement of the BTS system. Some suggestions about these misalignments are proposed in the paper, considering that Opal system is widely used in the clinical context.

Measuring human joint dynamics is crucial for understanding how our bodies move and function, providing valuable insights into biomechanics and motor control. Cerebral palsy (CP) is a neurological disorder affecting motor control and posture, leading to diverse gait abnormalities, including altered knee angles. The accurate measurement and analysis of knee angles in individuals with CP are crucial for understanding their gait patterns, assessing treatment outcomes, and guiding interventions. This paper presents a novel multimodal approach that combines inertial measurement unit (IMU) sensors and electromyography (EMG) to measure knee angles in individuals with CP during gait and other daily activities. We discuss the performance of this integrated approach, highlighting the accuracy of IMU sensors in capturing knee joint movements when compared with an optical motion-tracking system and the complementary insights offered by EMG in assessing muscle activation patterns. Moreover, we delve into the technical aspects of the developed device. The presented results show that the angle measurement error falls within the reported values of the state-of-the-art IMU-based knee joint angle measurement devices while enabling a high-quality EMG recording over prolonged periods of time. While the device was designed and developed primarily for measuring knee activity in individuals with CP, its usability extends beyond this specific use-case scenario, making it suitable for applications that involve human joint evaluation.

The field of flexible electronics is undergoing an exponential evolution due to the demand of the industry for wearable devices, wireless communication devices and networks, healthcare sensing devices and the technology around the Internet of Things (IoT) framework. E-tex tiles are attracting attention from within the healthcare areas, amongst others, for providing the possibility of developing continuous patient monitoring solutions and customized devices to accommodate each patient’s specific needs. This review paper summarizes multiple approaches investigated in the literature for wearable/flexible resonators working as antenna-based systems, sensors and filters with special attention paid to the integration to flexible materials, especially textiles. This review manuscript provides a general overview of the flexible resonators’ advantages and drawbacks, materials, fabrication techniques and processes and applications. Finally, the main challenges and future prospects of wearable resonators are discussed.

Blood testing has traditionally been the gold standard for the physiological analysis and monitoring of professional athletes. In recent years, blood testing has moved out of the laboratory thanks to portable handheld devices, such as lactate meters. However, despite its usefulness and widespread use, blood testing has several drawbacks and limitations, such as the need for the athlete to stop exercising for blood extraction and the inability to have data continuously collected. In this scenario, sweat has become an alternative to blood testing because of its rich content of electrolytes and metabolites, as well as small quantities of sugars, proteins, and ions. Nevertheless, there are few devices capable of analyzing this biofluid and providing useful information to users. In this paper, an electronic system designed for the autonomous analysis of sweat electrolytes and metabolites along with heart rate dynamics is presented. This system is part of a novel wearable device tailored for athletes that offers to the user a real-time assessment of their physiological status and performance.

The present study tests the feasibility, acceptability, and utility of the novel smartphone application—Time2Feel—to monitor family members’ emotional experiences, at the experiential and physiological level, and their context. To our knowledge, Time2Feel is the first of its kind, having the capability to monitor multiple members’ emotional experiences simultaneously and survey users’ emotional experiences when experiencing an increase in physiological arousal. In this study, a total of 44 parents and children used Time2Feel along with the Empatica E4 wrist-wearable device for 10 days. Engagement rates were within the acceptable range and consistent with previous work using experience sampling methods. Perceived ease of use and satisfaction fell mostly in the moderate range, with users reporting challenges with connectivity. We further discuss how addressing connectivity would increase acceptability. Finally, Time2Feel was successful at identifying physiological deviations in electrodermal activity for parents and children alike, and even though responses to those deviation-generated surveys were largely consistent with random survey responses, some differences were noted for mothers and fathers. We discuss the implications of using Time2Feel for understanding families’ emotional and stressful experiences day-to-day.

Communicating under extreme noise conditions remains challenging in spite of higher-order noise-canceling microphones, throat microphones, and signal processing. Both natural and human-made background ambient noise can disturb the conveyance of information because of high noise levels. Noise cancellation, which is used frequently in audio technology, has limits in noise reduction and does not guarantee clear vocal pickup in these severe situations. A contact microphone that is attached directly to the medium of interest has the potential to pick up vocal signals with reduced noise. In this study, an electrostatic transducer with an elastomer layer that is impedance-matched to the human body is used to pick up speech sounds through constant contact on the chin and cheek. By attaching the wearable device directly to the skin, the medium of air is bypassed, and airborne noise is passively canceled. Because of the acoustic impedance-matched layer, the sensor is more sensitive to low frequencies under 500 Hz, so frequency equalization was implemented to flatten the frequency response throughout the vocal range. The perceptual evaluation of speech quality (PESQ) scores of the wearable device with equalization averaged around 2.6 on a scale from –0.5 to 4.5. Speech recordings were also collected in a noise field of 85 dB, and the performance was compared to a cardioid lapel mic, a cardioid dynamic mic, and an omnidirectional condenser mic. The recordings revealed a significantly reduced presence of white noise in the contact sensor. This study provides preliminary results that show potential vocal applications for a wearable impedance-matched sensor.

Work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs) are often caused by repetitive lifting, making them a significant concern in occupational health. Although wearable assist devices have become the norm for mitigating the risk of back pain, most spinal assist devices still possess a partially rigid structure that impacts the user’s comfort and flexibility. This paper addresses this issue by presenting a smart textile-actuated spine assistance robotic exosuit (SARE), which can conform to the back seamlessly without impeding the user’s movement and is incredibly lightweight. To detect strain on the spine and to control the smart textile automatically, a soft knitting sensor that utilizes fluid pressure as a sensing element is used. Based on the soft knitting hydraulic sensor, the robotic exosuit can also feature the ability of monitoring and rectifying human posture. The SARE is validated experimentally with human subjects (N = 4). Through wearing the SARE in stoop lifting, the peak electromyography (EMG) signals of the lumbar erector spinae are reduced by 22.8% ± 12 for lifting 5 kg weights and 27.1% ± 14 in empty-handed conditions. Moreover, the integrated EMG decreased by 34.7% ± 11.8 for lifting 5 kg weights and 36% ± 13.3 in empty-handed conditions. In summary, the artificial muscle wearable device represents an anatomical solution to reduce the risk of muscle strain, metabolic energy cost and back pain associated with repetitive lifting tasks.

Bioimpedance monitoring is an increasingly important non-invasive technique for assessing physiological parameters such as body composition, hydration levels, heart rate, and breathing. However, sensor signals obtained from real-world experimental conditions invariably contain noise, which can significantly degrade the reliability of the derived quantities. Therefore, it is crucial to evaluate the quality of measured signals to ensure accurate physiological parameter values. In this study, we present a novel wrist-worn wearable device for bioimpedance monitoring, and propose a method for estimating signal quality for sensor signals obtained on the device. The method is based on the continuous wavelet transform of the measured signal, identification of wavelet ridges, and assessment of their energy weighted by the ridge duration. We validate the algorithm using a small-scale experimental study with the wearable device, and explore the effects of variables such as window size and different skin/electrode coupling agents on signal quality and repeatability. In comparison with traditional wavelet-based signal denoising, the proposed method is more adaptive and achieves a comparable signal-to-noise ratio.

Wearable exoskeleton solutions for upper limb rehabilitation or assistance, particularly for the hand area, have become increasingly attractive to researchers, proving to be effective over time in treating hand movement impairments following various neurological diseases. Our aim in the present work is to design a wearable exoskeleton device for active hand rehabilitation/assist control based on myoelectric signal (EMG) capture from forearm muscles, which is easy to wear by the user, comfortable, lightweight, and relatively inexpensive to make. The actuators use two different lengths to increase biocompatibility with the anatomy of the hand, and PneuNets fluid actuators are used. Their design to meet force and bending requirements was based on finite element numerical simulations, and the actuators were designed based on a clear design methodology to achieve the best possible quality. Tests on healthy subjects show that the EMG-based control strategy meets the needs of rehabilitation/assistive hand therapy, finding a comfortable and easy-to-use device. Future directions will focus on developing the device to meet rehabilitation needs for the entire upper limb and integrating the device into virtual reality (VR) through immersive devices.

An automated Condition Monitoring (CM) and real-time controlling framework is essential for outdoor mobile robots to ensure the robot’s health and operational safety. This work presents a novel Artificial Intelligence (AI)-enabled CM and vibrotactile haptic-feedback-based real-time control framework suitable for deploying mobile robots in dynamic outdoor environments. It encompasses two sections: developing a 1D Convolutional Neural Network (1D CNN) model for predicting system degradation and terrain flaws threshold classes and a vibrotactile haptic feedback system design enabling a remote operator to control the robot as per predicted class feedback in real-time. As vibration is an indicator of failure, we identified and separated system- and terrain-induced vibration threshold levels suitable for CM of outdoor robots into nine classes, namely Safe, moderately safe system-generated, and moderately safe terrain-induced affected by left, right, and both wheels, as well as severe classes such as unsafe system-generated and unsafe terrain-induced affected by left, right, and both wheels. The vibration-indicated data for each class are modelled based on two sensor data: an Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) sensor for the change in linear and angular motion and a current sensor for the change in current consumption at each wheel motor. A wearable novel vibrotactile haptic feedback device architecture is presented with left and right vibration modules configured with unique haptic feedback patterns corresponding to each abnormal vibration threshold class. The proposed haptic-feedback-based CM framework and real-time remote controlling are validated with three field case studies using an in-house-developed outdoor robot, resulting in a threshold class prediction accuracy of 91.1% and an effectiveness that, by minimising the traversal through undesired terrain features, is four times better than the usual practice.

After traffic-related incidents, falls are the second cause of human death, presenting the highest percentage among the elderly. Aiming to address this problem, the research community has developed methods built upon different sensors, such as wearable, ambiance, or hybrid, and various techniques, such as those that are machine learning- and heuristic based. Concerning the models used in the former case, they classify the input data between fall and no fall, and specific data dimensions are required. Yet, when algorithms that adopt heuristic techniques, mainly using thresholds, are combined with the previous models, they reduce the computational cost. To this end, this article presents a pipeline for detecting falls through a threshold-based technique over the data provided by a three-axis accelerometer. This way, we propose a low-complexity system that can be adopted from any acceleration sensor that receives information at different frequencies. Moreover, the input lengths can differ, while we achieve to detect multiple falls in a time series of sum vector magnitudes, providing the specific time range of the fall. As evaluated on several datasets, our pipeline reaches high performance results at 90.40% and 91.56% sensitivity on MMsys and KFall, respectively, while the generated specificity is 93.96% and 85.90%. Lastly, aiming to facilitate the research community, our framework, entitled PIPTO (drawing inspiration from the Greek verb “πι´πτω”, signifying “to fall”), is open sourced in Python and C.

Wrist-based respiratory rate (RR) measurement during sleep faces accuracy limitations. This study aimed to assess the accuracy of the RR estimation function during sleep based on the severity of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) using the Samsung Galaxy Watch (GW) series. These watches are equipped with accelerometers and photoplethysmography sensors for RR estimation. A total of 195 participants visiting our sleep clinic underwent overnight polysomnography while wearing the GW, and the RR estimated by the GW was compared with the reference RR obtained from the nasal thermocouple. For all participants, the root mean squared error (RMSE) of the average overnight RR and continuous RR measurements were 1.13 bpm and 1.62 bpm, respectively, showing a small bias of 0.39 bpm and 0.37 bpm, respectively. The Bland–Altman plots indicated good agreement in the RR measurements for the normal, mild, and moderate OSA groups. In participants with normal-to-moderate OSA, both average overnight RR and continuous RR measurements achieved accuracy rates exceeding 90%. However, for patients with severe OSA, these accuracy rates decreased to 79.45% and 75.8%, respectively. The study demonstrates the GW’s ability to accurately estimate RR during sleep, even though accuracy may be compromised in patients with severe OSA.

This aim of this research was to explore the appraisal of the use of smart alert bracelets by older adults diagnosed with dementia. Convenience sampling was adopted to recruit older adults with dementia in Yunlin County, Taiwan. A manual questionnaire survey was conducted, and SPSS 26.0 statistical software was used for analysis. The results of this study showed noticeable positive correlation results in the post-test for the modes “wearing device”, “degree of dementia”, and “field configuration”. Based on the experimental results, the following suggestions are provided: (1) in terms of statistical calculation, the statistical results were affected by changes in some participants; (2) as for the design of equipment, to be more suitable for adult use, the size and color of bracelets need to be optimized; (3) as for the problem of battery charging of the device, because the charging location of the device is not easy to find, it is better to extend device standby time; (4) regarding the selection of equipment, older adults with early-stage dementia could be concerned about the function of the wearable device, so it is recommended to provide a device designed with clear functions, such as a watch, so that older adults are more willing to wear it. Patients diagnosed with moderate and severe dementia should be advised to use concealed non-sensory devices, such as charms and cards, to better facilitate assistance from caregivers in wearing them; and (5) as for the device, in case of a loss event, in addition to mobile phone notifications, other light and sound device notifications can be added, allowing caregivers to pay more attention to information in real time. In summary, the feedback from caregivers and older adults suggests that if the device is to be used without charging, the overall design should be light and small, which is more suitable for service designs.

It has been well recognized that interactions between electromagnetic fields and metals are very strong. The consequence of human tissue in contact with metal, when subjected to an alternating electromagnetic field, is an increase in tissue temperature, which results from metals absorbing the energy obtained through induction. However, the electromagnetic induction characteristics and tissue energy absorbed caused by various electromagnetic field exposure conditions have not been well understood. A computational model was developed and employed in this study to assess the temporal and spatial temperature increases in skin due to contact with a highly conductive metallic plate while subjected to a high-intensity electromagnetic field. The effects of plate material, plate thickness, coil distance, and exposure time on temperature increase in the skin were computationally investigated. The electromagnetic and temperature distributions in skin layers during exposure to electromagnetic fields were achieved using models of electromagnetic wave propagation and an unsteady bioheat transfer. The modeling approach used indicates that the plate thickness, plate material, coil distance, and exposure time have a significant impact on the temperature change in the skin. The most important parameter was found to be the metal type. Iron has the greatest effect on skin temperature increase when subjected to external electromagnetic induction. These results allow the researchers to estimate more precisely the exposure limits for induction coils.

In the modern world, stress has become a pervasive concern that affects individuals’ physical and mental well-being. To address this issue, many wearable devices have emerged as potential tools for stress detection and management by measuring heart rate, heart rate variability (HRV), and various metrics related to it. This literature review aims to provide a comprehensive analysis of existing research on HRV tracking and biofeedback using smartwatches pairing with reliable 3rd party mobile apps like Elite HRV, Welltory, and HRV4Training specifically designed for stress detection and management. We apply various algorithms and methodologies employed for HRV analysis and stress detection including time-domain, frequency-domain, and non-linear analysis techniques. Prominent smartwatches, such as Apple Watch, Garmin, Fitbit, Polar, and Samsung Galaxy Watch, are evaluated based on their HRV measurement accuracy, data quality, sensor technology, and integration with stress management features. We describe the efficacy of smartwatches in providing real-time stress feedback, personalized stress management interventions, and promoting overall well-being. To assist researchers, doctors, and developers with using smartwatch technology to address stress and promote holistic well-being, we discuss the data’s advantages and limitations, future developments, and the significance of user-centered design and personalized interventions.

Rest tremor (RT) is observed in subjects with Parkinson’s disease (PD) and Essential Tremor (ET). Electromyography (EMG) studies have shown that PD subjects exhibit alternating contractions of antagonistic muscles involved in tremors, while the contraction pattern of antagonistic muscles is synchronous in ET subjects. Therefore, the RT pattern can be used as a potential biomarker for differentiating PD from ET subjects. In this study, we developed a new wearable device and method for differentiating alternating from a synchronous RT pattern using inertial data. The novelty of our approach relies on the fact that the evaluation of synchronous or alternating tremor patterns using inertial sensors has never been described so far, and current approaches to evaluate the tremor patterns are based on surface EMG, which may be difficult to carry out for non-specialized operators. This new device, named “RT-Ring”, is based on a six-axis inertial measurement unit and a Bluetooth Low-Energy microprocessor, and can be worn on a finger of the tremulous hand. A mobile app guides the operator through the whole acquisition process of inertial data from the hand with RT, and the prediction of tremor patterns is performed on a remote server through machine learning (ML) models. We used two decision tree-based algorithms, XGBoost and Random Forest, which were trained on features extracted from inertial data and achieved a classification accuracy of 92% and 89%, respectively, in differentiating alternating from synchronous tremor segments in the validation set. Finally, the classification response (alternating or synchronous RT pattern) is shown to the operator on the mobile app within a few seconds. This study is the first to demonstrate that different electromyographic tremor patterns have their counterparts in terms of rhythmic movement features, thus making inertial data suitable for predicting the muscular contraction pattern of tremors.

Sweat, as a biofluid that is easy to extract and contains a variety of biomarkers, can provide various types of physiological information for health monitoring. In recent years, research on wearable sensors for sweat sensing has been emerging continuously. Wearable sweat sensing will probably become an alternative method to traditional chemical analysis. This is due to its advantages of portability, non-invasiveness, comfort, and continuous monitoring. Since the inception of this research field, wearable sweat sensors have achieved significant development in terms of materials, structures, systems, and application directions. Research interests are gradually evolving from single biomarker detection to the pursuit of multi-channel, multi-modal system-level architecture. The analysis of physiological signals has also developed from single signal characterization to omics analysis using multiple physiological information sources. Based on the changes mentioned above, this paper mainly introduces the latest researches of wearable sweat sensors from the aspects of strategy, architecture, material, system, data processing, etc., and tries to summarize the trends of sweat sensors. Finally, this paper analyzes the challenges faced by the sensing platform and possible methods for optimization.

Wireless energy harvesting enables the conversion of ambient energy into electrical power for small wireless electronic devices. This technology offers numerous advantages, including availability, ease of implementation, wireless functionality, and cost-effectiveness. Radio frequency energy harvesting (RFEH) is a specific type of wireless energy harvesting that enables wireless power transfer by utilizing RF signals. RFEH holds immense potential for extending the lifespan of wireless sensors and wearable electronics that require low-power operation. However, despite significant advancements in RFEH technology for self-sustainable wearable devices, numerous challenges persist. This literature review focuses on three key areas: materials, antenna design, and power management, to delve into the research challenges of RFEH comprehensively. By providing an up-to-date review of research findings on RFEH, this review aims to shed light on the critical challenges, potential opportunities, and existing limitations. Moreover, it emphasizes the importance of further research and development in RFEH to advance its state-of-the-art and offer a vision for future trends in this technology.

Finding ways to enable seamless communication between deaf and able-bodied individuals has been a challenging and pressing issue. This paper proposes a solution to this problem by designing a low-cost data glove that utilizes multiple inertial sensors with the purpose of achieving efficient and accurate sign language recognition. In this study, four machine learning models—decision tree (DT), support vector machine (SVM), K-nearest neighbor method (KNN), and random forest (RF)—were employed to recognize 20 different types of dynamic sign language data used by deaf individuals. Additionally, a proposed attention-based mechanism of long and short-term memory neural networks (Attention-BiLSTM) was utilized in the process. Furthermore, this study verifies the impact of the number and position of data glove nodes on the accuracy of recognizing complex dynamic sign language. Finally, the proposed method is compared with existing state-of-the-art algorithms using nine public datasets. The results indicate that both the Attention-BiLSTM and RF algorithms have the highest performance in recognizing the twenty dynamic sign language gestures, with an accuracy of 98.85% and 97.58%, respectively. This provides evidence for the feasibility of our proposed data glove and recognition methods. This study may serve as a valuable reference for the development of wearable sign language recognition devices and promote easier communication between deaf and able-bodied individuals.

This paper describes an algorithm for extracting human gait movements in data obtained from accelerometer sensors of a mobile phone, provided that the mobile phone is used in the usual mode. The algorithm also performs a classification of the selected movements based on a feed-forward neural network. The developed algorithm selects the best areas in the accelerometer data, which reflect individual steps, according to the optimality criterion. For the selected area, the optimality criterion is the maximum value of the correlation coefficient with all other data segments. The selected plots are used as templates. Changing the parameters of patterns over time is necessary to assess changes in the individual rate of the functioning of the musculoskeletal system. Due to the correction of tolerance limits at the segmentation stage, the algorithm adapts to the change in gait speed.

The emergence of the global coronavirus pandemic in 2019 (COVID-19 disease) created a need for remote methods to detect and continuously monitor patients with infectious respiratory diseases. Many different devices, including thermometers, pulse oximeters, smartwatches, and rings, were proposed to monitor the symptoms of infected individuals at home. However, these consumer-grade devices are typically not capable of automated monitoring during both day and night. This study aims to develop a method to classify and monitor breathing patterns in real-time using tissue hemodynamic responses and a deep convolutional neural network (CNN)-based classification algorithm. Tissue hemodynamic responses at the sternal manubrium were collected in 21 healthy volunteers using a wearable near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) device during three different breathing conditions. We developed a deep CNN-based classification algorithm to classify and monitor breathing patterns in real time. The classification method was designed by improving and modifying the pre-activation residual network (Pre-ResNet) previously developed to classify two-dimensional (2D) images. Three different one-dimensional CNN (1D-CNN) classification models based on Pre-ResNet were developed. By using these models, we were able to obtain an average classification accuracy of 88.79% (without Stage 1 (data size reducing convolutional layer)), 90.58% (with 1 × 3 Stage 1), and 91.77% (with 1 × 5 Stage 1).

The aim of this study was to investigate the feasibility of automatically assessing the 2-Minute Walk Distance (2MWD) for monitoring people with multiple sclerosis (pwMS). For 154 pwMS, MS-related clinical outcomes as well as the 2MWDs as evaluated by clinicians and derived from accelerometer data were collected from a total of 323 periodic clinical visits. Accelerometer data from a wearable device during 100 home-based 2MWD assessments were also acquired. The error in estimating the 2MWD was validated for walk tests performed at hospital, and then the correlation (r) between clinical outcomes and home-based 2MWD assessments was evaluated. Robust performance in estimating the 2MWD from the wearable device was obtained, yielding an error of less than 10% in about two-thirds of clinical visits. Correlation analysis showed that there is a strong association between the actual and the estimated 2MWD obtained either at hospital (r = 0.71) or at home (r = 0.58). Furthermore, the estimated 2MWD exhibits moderate-to-strong correlation with various MS-related clinical outcomes, including disability and fatigue severity scores. Automatic assessment of the 2MWD in pwMS is feasible with the usage of a consumer-friendly wearable device in clinical and non-clinical settings. Wearable devices can also enhance the assessment of MS-related clinical outcomes.

The rapid growth of point-of-care polysomnographic alternatives has necessitated standardized evaluation and validation frameworks. The current average across participant validation methods may overestimate the agreement between wearable sleep tracker devices and polysomnography (PSG) systems because of the high base rate of sleep during the night and the interindividual difference across the sampling population. This study proposes an evaluation framework to assess the aggregating differences of the sleep architecture features and the chronologically epoch-by-epoch mismatch of the wearable sleep tracker devices and the PSG ground truth. An AASM-based sleep stage categorizing method was proposed to standardize the sleep stages scored by different types of wearable trackers. Sleep features and sleep stage architecture were extracted from the PSG and the wearable device’s hypnograms. Therefrom, a localized quantifier index was developed to characterize the local mismatch of sleep scoring. We evaluated different commonly used wearable sleep tracking devices with the data collected from 22 different subjects over 30 nights of 8-h sleeping. The proposed localization quantifiers can characterize the chronologically localized mismatches over the sleeping time. The outperformance of the proposed method over existing evaluation methods was reported. The proposed evaluation method can be utilized for the improvement of the sensor design and scoring algorithm.
