The primary objective of the present study was to investigate the dimensional structure of the OHIP-14 in a sample of elderly Norwegians. A secondary objective was to describe associations between the exposed OHIP-14 dimensions and additional self-report oral health-related variables to assess the dimensions' criterion validity. A survey questionnaire including the OHIP-14 and additional self-report oral health-related measures was completed by 325 home-dwelling Norwegians aged 70+. Exploratory factor analysis was used to investigate the dimensional structure of the OHIP-14 in this sample. Bivariate correlations were used to describe associations between the exposed OHIP-14 dimensions and additional self-report oral health-related variables. Three dimensions named psychosocial impacts, oral function impacts and general function impacts were revealed. Convergent and discriminant validity of these dimensions were largely supported, and internal consistency reliability for each dimension was good. Statistically significant associations were found between the exposed dimensions and additional self-report oral health-related variables, supporting the dimensions' criterion validity. A three-dimensional structure of the OHIP-14 was exposed and validated in the present study sample. Since different aspects of oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) may be perceived and weighted differently in various populations, suggestions for future research include more profound investigations of the construct validity of the OHIP-14 and similar instruments assessing OHRQoL. Objective: To examine the validity and reliability of the Swedish versions of the short-form Child Perceptions Questionnaire 11-14 (CPQ11-14) and Parental Perceptions Questionnaire (P-CPQ) for measuring children's oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL). Material and methods: The sample comprised 247 children and parents. OHRQoL was assessed by asking each child and their accompanying parent to complete the relevant questionnaire. To allow test-retest analysis, 30 children and 32 parents were asked to complete the instrument a second time within 2-4 weeks. Results: In terms of construct validity, significant correlations were observed between CPQ scale scores and the global ratings of oral health and overall well-being for both the CPQ11-14 and the P-CPQ. Regarding internal consistency, Cronbach's alphas for the total scales were 0.81 and 0.77, respectively, indicating good reliability, and internal consistency for the subscales (two or four dimensions) was acceptable. Test-retest reliability was good for the CPQ11-14 total scale (ICC 0.77) and acceptable for the P-CPQ total scale (ICC 0.63). Conclusions: The Swedish versions of the short-form CPQ11-14 and P-CPQ are both valid and reliable, and can be recommended for use among Swedish children aged 11-14 years for evaluation of OHRQoL. Objective: To explore the agreement between children and parents on children's oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) when using the Swedish short forms of CPQ11-14 and P-CPQ, and to evaluate the impact on agreement of oral health including malocclusion and background characteristics (dental fear, family situation, gender of informant). Material and methods: A total of 257 children and their accompanying parents were asked to fill in the Swedish versions of the short-form CPQ11-14 and P-CPQ separately in connection with a clinical examination. Results: The participants comprised 247 child-parent pairs: 116 (47%) boys, 131 (53%) girls, 166 (67%) mothers and 81 (33%) fathers. The agreement between the child and parental ratings of the children's OHRQoL was low, with an ICC of 0.22 (95% CI: 0.04-0.37) for the total scale. Conclusions: There was a low agreement between children's and parents' answers. For best care, it is advisable to consider perceptions of both children and parents because they can complement each other in estimating the child's OHRQoL. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: The aims of this study were to investigate and describe the Oral Health Related Quality of Life (OHRQoL) in a socially endangered group of people and to compare the OHRQoL to other patient groups.Material and Methods: About 294 socially endangered persons attending a volunteer clinic in Copenhagen Denmark filled in the OHIP-14 questionnaire. The group was compared in mean score and reported problems to a group of patients with tooth loss and about to have a removable dental prosthesis (RDP), a group with tooth loss about to have a fixed dental prosthesis (FDP) and a control group without tooth loss.Results: Significantly higher OHIP-14 score was seen in the socially endangered group (15.5 (SD 12.6)) compared with the control (1.9 (SD 2.7)) and the FDP group (9.4 (SD 8.2)) but not the RDP group (13.1 (SD 10.5)). This difference was not changed after stratifying in age groups. Problems related to psychological disability, social disability, and handicap were more frequent in the social endangered group than for the other groups. The items pain, tense, diet, relax, life, and function stand out as problems in the socially endangered group compared to the other groups.Conclusion: The OHRQoL is highly impaired in the socially endangered persons and at least to the level of persons with great tooth loss about to have an RDP. Objective. Focusing on 70-year-old adults in Sweden and guided by the conceptual framework of International Classification of Impairments, Disabilities and Handicaps (ICIDH), the purpose of this study was to examine the extent to which socio-demographic characteristics, self-reported oral disease and social/psychological/physical oral health outcome variables are associated with two global measures of self-assessed satisfaction with oral health in Swedish 70-year-olds and if there is a degree of discordance between these global questions. Background. It has become an important task to create a simple way to measure self-perceived oral health. In these attempts to find practical ways to measure health, the 'global oral health question' is a possible tool to measure self-rated oral health, but there is limited knowledge about how important the wording of this question is. Materials and methods. In 2012, a questionnaire was mailed to all persons born in 1942 in two Swedish counties, Örebro (T) and Östergötland (E). The total population of 70-year-olds amounted to 7889. Bivariate analyses were conducted by cross-tabulation and Chi-square statistics. Multivariate analyses were conducted using binary multiple logistic regression. Results. The two global oral health question of 70-year-olds in Sweden was mainly explained by the number of teeth (OR = 5.6 and 5.2), chewing capacity (OR = 6.9 and 4.2), satisfaction with dental appearance (OR = 19.8 and 17.3) and Oral Impact on Daily Performance (OIDP) (OR = 3.5 and 3.9). Objectives. The aims of this study were to measure and describe the Oral Health-Related Quality-of-Life (OHRQoL) in a population about to receive removable dental prostheses (RDP) or fixed dental prostheses (FDP). Materials and methods. The Oral Health Impact Profile 49 (OHIP-49) was completed by 410 patients about to receive treatment with either RDP or FDP. Objective variables were: gender, age, number of teeth, type of replacement planned (FDP/RDP) and location (one jaw or both) and zone (aesthetic/masticatory/both) of missing teeth to be replaced. Results. Women had a worse OHRQoL than men in the RDP group. Higher age was significantly correlated with a better OHRQoL independent of treatment modality. Participants about to receive FDP in one jaw in the masticatory zone only had a better OHRQoL than RDP participants in the same group. The most frequently reported problems in all groups concerned functional limitations, discomfort and physical disabilities. Little variance in reported items was seen between the sub-groups and social handicap was not frequently reported. Conclusions. The difference in OHRQoL between participants about to receive RDP and FDP was limited. The most frequently reported problems concerned functional limitations, discomfort and physical disabilities. Objective. The aim of this study was to investigate factors associated with the oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) of institutionalized elderly in Germany. Material and Methods. One-hundred-and-fifty-eight subjects from old people's homes were selected (mean 82.8 years). OHRQoL was measured using the Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP). Denture characteristics (kind and age of denture, retention of removable denture, number of teeth in static occlusion) and general issues (age, gender, education level, and general pain status) were assessed. All factors were subjected to bivariate testing for their effects on the OHIP summary score (OHIP-SC) and to multivariate testing in subjects with removable dentures ( n =128); a linear regression model with backward elimination was used, with OHIP-SC as the dependent variable. Results. In the context of other studies, a median OHIP-SC of 29 indicated highly impaired OHRQoL. According to the bivariate analysis, retention, age of denture, number of teeth in static occlusion, general pain status, and education all exhibited significant influence on OHIP-SC. In the final linear regression model, general pain status, education level, and retention of denture remained at a statistically significant level. The model explained 34% ( R 2 =0.34) of the variance of the OHIP-SC. The kind of denture had no significant impact on OHIP-SC. Conclusions. In contrast to other groups, the kind of denture exhibited little impact on OHIP-SC for this highly specific collective.
