Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a common upper gastrointestinal disorder characterized by troublesome symptoms, including heartburn and acid regurgitation. GERD is associated with complications such as peptic stricture, Barrett's esophagus, and esophageal adenocarcinoma, and it negatively affects quality of life (QoL)., Aims: To assess the factors influencing the QoL of GERD patients in the Aseer region of Saudi Arabia., Settings and Design: This descriptive cross-sectional study used self-administered questionnaires in a study population of patients aged ≥18 years from Aseer, Saudi Arabia, between January 15, 2023-February 15, 2023., Materials and Methods: A previously validated GERD health-related QoL (GERD-HRQoL) questionnaire was used to assess the patients' sociodemographic data, GERD, and GERD-HRQoL., Statistical Analysis Used: Descriptive analysis included describing the frequency distribution and percentage for study variables, including demographic data, GERD-related QoL symptoms, and QoL, which were graphed. Cross-tabulation presented the distribution of GERD-HRQoL scores by their personal data and other factors using the Pearson Chi-square and exact probability tests., Results: Overall, 502 participants previously diagnosed with GERD completed the questionnaire. Participants' were aged 18-65 years (mean age of 31.5 ± 14.6 years), and 384 (76.5%) were male. The most frequent symptom affecting QoL was heartburn (85.9%), followed by postprandial heartburn (84.3%), heartburn while lying down (82.7%), bloating or gassy feelings (79.9%), and heartburn while standing up (77.3%)., Conclusions: Our study showed that patients with GERD had a poor QoL due to GERD-related symptoms, mainly heartburn. Objective: Diabetes mellitus represents a major burden globally and locally. Some diabetic patients may resort to the use of herbal medicine as another approach to control their blood glucose levels. This study aims to assess the prevalence and the perception of diabetic patients toward the usage of herbs in treating diabetes., Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted in a specialized polyclinic of the primary health care center in the National Guard hospital located in Jeddah. The questionnaire was interviewer-administered and a total of 196 diabetic patients were interviewed., Results: Of 196 patients interviewed, most (59.7%) have used herbs to treat diabetes. Cinnamon, garlic, fenugreek, and moringa were the most common herbs used by diabetic patients. Many herbal users (49.9%) reported that herbs can play a role in decreasing blood glucose levels and (48%) of herbal users prefer the use of herbs over conventional medicine in treating diabetes. Most diabetic patients (37.3%) gained their knowledge about herbs through media and the experiences of other diabetic patients and we found that the reason to use herbs the majority was to reap the benefits of the herbs (48.7%) or because of herbs on controlling diabetes and reducing diabetic complications (30.7%)., Conclusion: This study concluded that herbs are commonly used among diabetic patients and the majority of patients perceive herbs as a cofactor in controlling diabetes., Competing Interests: There are no conflicts of interest., (Copyright: © 2023 Journal of Family Medicine and Primary Care.)

Context: The COVID-19 pandemic has changed the structure of the healthcare system. As a response to the pandemic, the ministry of health applied many changes to the primary healthcare system. These changes created new challenges for healthcare workers (HCWs)., Aims: To identify the roles and challenges of practitioners in primary healthcare (PHC) centers during COVID-19 in Al-Baha city, Saudi Arabia, in 2022., Methods and Materials: An analytical cross-sectional study was carried out in 2022 in Al-Baha city, Saudi Arabia. An electronic online questionnaire was distributed formally to HCWs in PHC centers. All primary HCWs during the COVID-19 pandemic in Al-Baha city, Saudi Arabia, were included., Results: A total of 424 responses were analyzed. Half (50.7%) of the participants had fieldwork roles during the pandemic. The two most commonly agreed-upon challenges were stress (78.7%) and worry about getting infected (79.8%). The majority (74.4%) of the participants' roles involved direct contact with suspected COVID-19 cases, whereas 50.9% involved direct contact with confirmed COVID-19 cases. Direct contact with confirmed cases showed a significant association with worrying about getting infected ( P = 0.019)., Conclusions: Workload, overtime, conflict ambiguity, fear of getting and transmitting the infection, stress, and lack of personal protective equipment were challenges faced by the primary HCWs, which negatively impacted the quality of delivered services and mental health. Background: Lactose intolerance is defined as "Lactose malabsorption with gastrointestinal symptoms." Also, lactose malabsorption can be defined as "Not all ingested lactose was absorbed and that some has reached the large intestine." The common symptoms associated with the maldigestion of lactose are bloating, diarrhoea, nausea, and abdominal pain., Aim: The current study aims to assess knowledge of people awareness of the lactose intolerance disorder and its relation to nutrition and dietary habits in Saudi Arabia., Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional approach was used targeting all accessible population in Saudi Arabia aging 18 years or more and accept to participate in the study. Data were collected from participants using an online pre-structured questionnaire. The researchers constructed the survey tool after intensive literature review and expert's consultation. The questionnaire covered the following data: participants' socio-demographic data like age, gender, and monthly income. Second section covered participants' dairy products intake with associated symptoms. Third part covered personal and family history of glucose intolerance disorder among the study participants. Awareness was assessed using multiple repose and mutually exclusive questions., Results: A total of 1189 participants fulfilling the inclusion criteria completed the study questionnaire. Participants ages ranged from 18 to 58 years old with mean age of 25.1 ± 12.9 years. Exact of 692 (58.2%) participants were females. Exact of 104 (8.7%) of the study participants reported that they had lactose intolerance disorder which started at the age of 11 to 20 years among 41 (39.4%) and at the age of 21 to 30 years among 36 (34.6%). About 77% of the study participants know that lactose indolence disorder symptoms appear after eating dairy or its derivatives. A total of 45.8% reported that leaky gut syndrome (diarrhoea and bloating) is caused by symptoms that occur with lactose intolerance and 39.4% know lactose intolerance is an uncurable disease., Conclusion: In conclusion, this study revealed that nearly one out of each three persons on Saudi Arabia is knowledgeable regarding lactose intolerance disorder and its related factors and relieving factors. Background and Aims: Peripheral neuropathy is a common diabetic complication. It is linked to poor glycaemic control and longer duration of diabetes. We explored the association between HbA1c and neuropathy risk considering the duration of diabetes in a sample of Saudi diabetic patients., Method: We conducted a monofilament test on 343 diabetic patients referred to our specialist diabetology centre in Saudi Arabia. We utilized a multiple generalized logistic regression model with a binary outcome related to neuropathy complications., Results: We found that over four out of every five patients have peripheral neuropathy. The interaction between HbA1c and duration was significant (estimate = -0.02802, P = 0.00534), a positive association between neuropathy and both HbA1c (increased risk by 46.2%, P = 0.03222) and DM duration (increased risk by 19.6%, P = 0.04497)., Conclusions: The shorter the duration of diabetes, the more positive the relationship between HbA1c and peripheral neuropathy. In patients living for over 40 years with diabetes, HbA1c was higher among those who did not have peripheral neuropathy. Background: Colorectal cancer (CRC) incidence and related mortalities have been steadily increasing in KSA over the past 20 years. CRC in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) population presents in younger ages and in more advanced disease states as compared to other countries. This study was aimed to determine factors (demographic, habitual, environmental, nutritional, and genetic) associated with CRC in Riyadh, KSA., Materials and Methods: A matched case-control study conducted in the major hospitals in Riyadh (King Khalid university Hospital, King Faisal Specialist Hospital, Riyadh Military Hospital, Security Force Hospital, King Fahd Medical City). Here most of CRC cases are managed. The cases ( n = 121) group included all recently diagnosed and pathologically confirmed Saudi cases of CRC identified during the period 1 st of January 2017 till 31 st of December 2018 who agreed to participate and fulfilled the inclusion criteria. A similar number of controls attending the study settings were selected consecutively from the clinics where cases were managed and matched on a 1:1 basis with cases based on age (+/-3 years) and gender. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire. Conditional logistic regression models were fitted to determine factors associated with risk of CRC., Result: This study included similar number of males and females in both groups: males 69 (57%) and females 52 (43%) in each group (Chi-square test P = 1.0). The mean (S.D) age in the cases group was 53.6 (S.D = 12.9) and 53.3 (S.D = 12.9) in the controls group (Student test P = 0.86). In the final multivariate conditional logistic regression model, variables independently associated with risk of colorectal cancer were body mass index (OR = 0.93; 95% CI 0.87-0.98; P = 0.011) employment status (inverse relation: OR = 0.33; 95% CI 0.14-0.77; P = 0.010), colon polyps (OR = 4.09; 95% CI 1.06-15.82; P = 0.041), and constipation (OR = 4.98; 95% CI 1.91-15.99; P = 0.001)., Conclusion: Factors associated with CRC in the major referral hospitals in KSA were colon polyps, chronic constipation, and unemployment.
