Background: There are several leadership training programs for health researchers in India. However, there is a need to develop context-tailored leadership and mentoring approaches., Objective: The objective of the study is to critically analyze the available leadership training programs in India for health researchers and service providers, for the leadership domains incorporated and overall training approaches., Materials and Methods: We used an exploratory-descriptive design to identify and review leadership training programs for health researchers and service providers/managers that had been offered by Indian institutions between 2013 and 2018. Our analytic approach was based on "transformational leadership" and "leader-member exchange" theories of leadership, curricula of popular leadership training programs worldwide, and the International Clinical Epidemiology Network model for leadership in health research in India based on a nationwide primary study., Results: We identified and reviewed 20 leadership training programs. These were heterogeneous in aim, scope (broad-based/thematic), course content, design, target participants and class profile, mode of delivery and training method, duration, frequency, and fund arrangements. The programs infrequently included topics on soft skills, mentoring, risk mitigation, collaboration for research, funding dynamics, institutional transformation, self-view and peer perception, and personal well-being. The programs insufficiently addressed contextual challenges of career exploration and risk mitigation, project management, strategic planning, and decision-making, ethics and integrity, negotiations, networking and collaboration, understanding funding dynamics, and mentoring. Only three programs linked to the training to the participants' ecosystem., Conclusions: There is a need to develop customized course contents and training strategies that address the requirements of the local context vis-à-vis globally connected research ecosystems., (Copyright © 2024 Copyright: © 2024 Indian Journal of Public Health.)

Epidemiological data on the prevalence of acute kidney injury (AKI) in acute coronary syndrome are sparse, with most studies having been conducted retrospectively. This study prospectively analyzed the incidence of AKI in patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI) and to identify the risk factors for AKI and their renal outcome at 3 and 6 months. This was a prospective and observational study, which enrolled 120 patients presenting with their first episode of AMI to our hospital and consented to the study. Renal function tests were performed at admission, at 48 h, and at follow-up at 3 and 6 months. The majority of the patients underwent a percutaneous coronary intervention (59.2%), 21.7% received thrombolytic therapy, and 19.2% were managed conservatively. At 48 h, 11 patients had AKI. At 3 months, 8 patients had died, and renal dysfunctions were seen in 9 out of 112 patients. At 6 months, 12 patients out of 112 had renal dysfunction. There was no difference in the incidence of AKI in patients with an estimated glomerular filtration rate above and below 60 mL/min/1.73 m2. Killip Class 4 and diabetes mellitus were associated with an increased incidence of renal dysfunction in AMI patients. The type of treatment and the use of a contrast agent in the coronary intervention did not affect the development of AKI. According to this study, if indicated, a percutaneous coronary intervention should not be denied to patients for fear of developing AKI. Background: Dengue and chikungunya have been emerging as major vector-borne diseases. The global burden of the diseases is rising as a public health problem. The complexity of disease is governed by multiple constraints including only symptomatic treatment and inflicts heavy social and economic burden on society. The present study is designed to assess the economic burden of dengue and chikungunya infection by calculating cost per patient in Gujarat, India., Methods: A total of 210 patients were enrolled in the study from Ahmedabad and Kheda district of Gujarat from May 2018 to December 2019 of which 150 had dengue and 60 chikungunya infections, subject to the willingness of participation in the survey. Information on wage loss days, cost associated with medicines, diagnosis, special food and travel cost, etc., for the calculation of the direct and indirect costs associated with dengue and chikungunya were collected from these participants using a structured questionnaire. Informed consent was taken before including any participant in the study., Results: In the dengue sample, 86 were males (57.3%) and the rest were females, and in the chikungunya sample, 31 were males (51.7%) and the rest females. The median age of the participants with dengue and chikungunya was 18 (p25 to p75: 8 to 26) and 30 (p25 to p75: 21 to 45) years respectively. Median family income was recorded as Rs 15,000 (p25 to p75: 9000 to 25500) and Rs 12,000 (p25 to p75: 9000 to 18500) for the dengue and chikungunya cases, respectively. The average duration of the illness was observed to be higher in chikungunya (median days (P25 to p75): 15 (7-45)) than dengue (median days (P25 to p75): 10 (5-15)). The median indirect cost in the case of dengue was Rs 1,931 (p25 to p75: 300 to 4500) while Rs 2,550 (p25 to p75: 0 to 5250) was observed for chikungunya cases. Two types of direct cost, namely, direct cost related to medical expenses and direct cost related to other expenses were calculated. Direct cost related to medical expenses was observed to be higher in dengue (Md (P25 to p75): Rs 2,450 (400-5000)) than chikungunya (Md (P25 to p75): Rs 1,500 (150-5200)) while indirect cost related to other expenses were comparable between dengue (Md (P25 to p75): Rs 1,575 (1300-2600)) and chikungunya (Md (P25 to p75): Rs 1500 (850-2850)). The average total cost for one dengue episode was estimated to be Rs 6,860 (3700-12525) whereas it was Rs 7,000 (2550-14000) for one episode of Chikungunya., Conclusions: Overall, patients have to bear high costs while suffering from dengue and chikungunya infections. Furthermore, the duration of illness while suffering from viral diseases also contributes to the substantial economic burden. Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a fastest evolving metabolic disorder and India houses second highest number of patients with diabetes after China. Cardiovascular diseases are the major cause of mortality among patients with T2DM. Yoga is an ancient Indian practice that proves to be effective for patients with diabetes. The present systematic review and meta-analysis has been conducted to see the benefits of yoga on blood pressure, lipid profile, and anthropometric measures among patients with T2DM. The articles were extracted from three databases - PubMed, The Cochrane library, and Google scholar. Only English language articles, with PEDro score≥6, were included in the current study. The duplicates were removed using Mendeley. Fourteen randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and three 3 non-RCTs were included in the analysis. The meta-analysis was done using Review Manager 5.3. The results reveal that yoga is effect in improving blood pressure ( P <0.01), lipid profile ( P <0.01) except HDL ( P =0.06), and anthropometric measures ( P <0.01) except waist-hip ratio ( P =0.79). Heterogeneity was also high for most of the variables. It may be concluded from the results that the yoga is effective in improving of blood pressure, lipid profile, and anthropometric measures. Background & Objectives: Several studies have been conducted in India to determine the prevalence of learning disabilities in school children which has been reported to be 3-10 per cent among students population. The present study was conducted to find out prevalence of specific developmental disorder of scholastic skills in students of classes VII to XII and to find out feasibility of screening tool in Chandigarh, India., Methods: A cross-sectional study on school students was carried out in two phases. The students were drawn from classes VII to XII from 10 schools of Chandigarh, India. Details of academic performance of all the students was taken, subjectively from class teachers and objectively from the marks obtained in the last academic session. In phase I, 2402 students were assessed. In phase II, 108 students were randomly selected for evaluation for assessing sensitivity and specificity of screening proforma for teachers. A total of 124 students from phase I and all students in phase II were assessed in detail. Tests of intelligence (Malin's Intelligence Scale for Indian Children and Standard Progressive Matrices), and NIMHANS Index for specific learning disability (SLD) battery were administered., Results: A total of 38 students were found to be having specific developmental disorder of scholastic skills in phase I, that gave a prevalence of 1.58 per cent. Majority had mixed type of errors on SLD battery. There were more boys diagnosed with specific learning disability. Teacher's screening instrument had high sensitivity (90.385) and specificity (94.68)., Interpretation & Conclusions: The findings of our study conducted in community, showed that specific learning disability was not identified even till later age. The screening instrument thus could be used by teachers to suspect students with specific learning disability.
