My goal is to produce a better understanding of the influences that lead to the variation observed in hybrid regimes. The literature on the development of hybrid regimes currently focuses on the prior regime type as a determining factor, but using the Soviet cases in which a common regime type was shared allows for an investigation of the other factors influencing the variation in hybrid regime types. I will do this by first creating a three dimensional typology of regimes based on elements of elite competition, societal democratization, and electoral fairness. The paths of regime changes in each of the republics will be mapped out from independence to the present. Different influential factors will be drawn from the post-Communist and democratization literature will be investigated in context of the empirical evidence from the former Soviet republics using a broad quantitative overview of the 15 republics and a focused comparison the most common paths of regime change within the post-Soviet space. ..PAT.-Unpublished Manuscript [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
