In sheep, temperament is known to affect animal welfare and the quality of animal products. While the composition of the gut microbiota is different between depressed patients and healthy human patients, in sheep, the influence of temperament on ruminal microbial species and abundance remains unknown. This study investigated the effects of temperament on parameters of rumen fermentation and microbial composition of rumen contents of Hu ram lambs. Using the pen score test, 6 lambs that scored 2 points or below (calm) and 6 lambs that scored 4 points or more (nervous) were selected from 100 ram lambs. The sheep were fed a standard diet for 60 days and rumen samples were collected at slaughter. The concentrations of propionic acid, isovaleric acid, valeric acid, and the ammonia nitrogen concentration were different between the calm and the nervous groups (p < 0.05). At the phylum level, there were significant differences in Bacteroidetes, Tenericutes, and Spirochetes (p < 0.05); and at the genus level, there were significant differences in the Christensenellaceae R-7 group, Treponema 2, Fibrobacter, and Ruminococcaceae UCG-003 (p < 0.05). The present study suggests that differences in the rumen microbiota between the calm group and the nervous group could have an impact on the metabolism of carbohydrates and polysaccharides and explain why Calm Hu sheep have a higher energy utilization efficiency than nervous Hu sheep. More studies are needed to further understand the effect of temperament on specific pathways of the rumen microbiota.

The search for a simple and effective method to remove organic dyes and color intermediates that threaten human safety from the water environment is urgent. Herein, we report a simple method for constructing iron/nickel phosphide nanocrystals anchored on N-B-doped carbon-based composites, using steam-exploded poplar (SEP) and graphene oxide (GO) as a carrier. The stability and catalytic activity of N-B-NixFeyP/SEP and GO were achieved by thermal conversion in a N2 atmosphere and modifying the Fe/Ni ratio in gel precursors. N-B-Ni7Fe3P/SEP was employed for the catalytic hydrogenation of 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) and methylene blue (MB), using sodium borohydride in aqueous media at room temperature. This showed much better catalytic performances in terms of reaction rate constant (0.016 S−1 and 0.041 S−1, respectively) and the activity factor, K (1.6 S−1·g−1 and 8.2 S−1·g−1, respectively) compared to the GO carrier (0.0053 S−1 and 0.035 S−1 for 4-NP and MB, respectively). The strong interaction between the carrier’s morphology and structure, and the vertically grown bimetallic phosphide nanoclusters on its surface, enhances charge transfer, electron transfer kinetics at the interface and Ni-Fe phosphide dispersion on the nanoclusters, and prevents dissolution of the nanoparticles during catalysis, thereby improving stability and achieving catalysis durability. These findings provide a green and simple route to efficient catalyst preparation and provide guidance for the rational selection of catalyst carriers.

Natural gas scarcity poses a significant risk to the global economy. The risk of production loss due to natural gas scarcity can be transferred to downstream economies through globalized supply chains. Therefore, it is important to quantify and analyze how natural gas scarcity in some regions affects the Belt and Road (B&R) economies. The embodied natural gas scarcity risks (EGSRs) of B&R economies are assessed and the EGSR transmission network is constructed. The built network shows a small-world nature. This illustrates that any interruption in key countries will quickly spread to neighboring countries, potentially affecting the global economy. The top countries, including Turkey, China, Ukraine, and India are identified in EGSR exports, which also have relatively high values of closeness centrality. The findings illustrate that the shortage of natural gas supply in these countries may have a significant impact on downstream countries or sectors and the resulting economic losses spread rapidly. These countries are critical to the resilience of the B&R economies to natural gas scarcity. The top nations, including Turkmenistan, Macedonia, and Georgia are also identified in EGSR imports, highlighting their vulnerability to natural gas scarcity. Further, the community analysis of the network provides a fresh perspective for formulating fair and reasonable allocation policies of natural gas resources and minimizing the large-scale spread of economic losses caused by natural gas scarcity.
