We present the size evolution of passively evolving galaxies at z approximately 2 identified in Wide-Field Camera 3 imaging from the Early Release Science program. Our sample was constructed using an analog to the passive BzK galaxy selection criterion, which isolates galaxies with little or no ongoing star formation at z greater than approximately 1.5. We identify 30 galaxies in approximately 40 arcmin(sup 2) to H less than 25 mag. By fitting the 10-band Hubble Space Telescope photometry from 0.22 micrometers less than approximately lambda (sub obs) 1.6 micrometers with stellar population synthesis models, we simultaneously determine photometric redshift, stellar mass, and a bevy of other population parameters. Based on the six galaxies with published spectroscopic redshifts, we estimate a typical redshift uncertainty of approximately 0.033(1+z).We determine effective radii from Sersic profile fits to the H-band image using an empirical point-spread function. By supplementing our data with published samples, we propose a mass-dependent size evolution model for passively evolving galaxies, where the most massive galaxies (M(sub ∗) approximately 10(sup 11) solar mass) undergo the strongest evolution from z approximately 2 to the present. Parameterizing the size evolution as (1 + z)(sup - alpha), we find a tentative scaling of alpha approximately equals (−0.6 plus or minus 0.7) + (0.9 plus or minus 0.4) log(M(sub ∗)/10(sup 9 solar mass), where the relatively large uncertainties reflect the poor sampling in stellar mass due to the low numbers of highredshift systems. We discuss the implications of this result for the redshift evolution of the M(sub ∗)-R(sub e) relation for red galaxies.

We analyze the spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of Lyman break galaxies . (LBGs) at z approx = 1-3 selected using the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Wide Field Camera 3 (WFC3) UVIS channel filters. These HST /WFC3 obse,rvations cover about 50 arcmin2 in the GOODS-South field as a part of the WFC3 Early Release Science program. These LBGs at z approx = 1-3 are selected using dropout selection criteria similar to high redshift LBGs. The deep multi-band photometry in this field is used to identify best-fit SED models, from which we infer the following results: (1) the photometric redshift estimate of these dropout selected LBGs is accurate to within few percent; (2) the UV spectral slope f3 is redder than at high redshift (z > 3), where LBGs are less dusty; (3) on average, LBGs at .z approx = 1-3 are massive, dustier and more highly star-forming, compared to LBGs at higher redshifts with similar luminosities, though their median values are similar within 1a uncertainties. This could imply that identical dropout selection technique, at all. redshifts, find physically similar galaxies; and (4) the stellar masses of these LBGs are directly proportional to their UV luminosities with a logarithmic slope of approx 0.46, and star-formation rates are proportional to their stellar masses with a logarithmic slope of approx 0.90. These relations hold true - within luminosities probed in this study - for LBGs from z approx = 1.5 to 5. The star-forming galaxies selected using other color-based techniques show similar correlations at z approx = 2, but to avoid any selection biases, and for direct comparison with LBGs at z > 3, a true Lyman break selection at z approx = 2 is essential. The future HST UV surveys,. both wider and deeper, covering a large luminosity range are important to better understand LBG properties, and their evolution.

We present grism spectra of emission line galaxies (ELGs) from 0.6-1.6 microns from the Wide Field Camera 3 (WFC3) on the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). These new infrared grism data augment previous optical Advanced Camera for Surveys G800L (0.6-0.95 micron) grism data in GOODS South, extending the wavelength coverage well past the G800L red cutoff. The ERS grism field was observed at a depth of 2 orbits per grism, yielding spectra of hundreds of faint objects, a subset of which are presented here. ELGs are studied via the Ha, [O III ], and [OII] emission lines detected in the redshift ranges 0.2 less than or equal to z less than or equal to 1.6, 1.2 less than or equal to z less than or equal to 2.4 and 2.0 less than or equal to z less than or equal to 3.6 respectively in the G102 (0.8-1.1 microns; R approximately 210) and C141 (1.1-1.6 microns; R approximately 130) grisms. The higher spectral resolution afforded by the WFC3 grisms also reveals emission lines not detectable with the G800L grism (e.g., [S II] and [S III] lines). From these relatively shallow observations, line luminosities, star formation rates, and grism spectroscopic redshifts are determined for a total of 25 ELGs to M(sub AB)(F098M) approximately 25 mag. The faintest source in our sample with a strong but unidentified emission line--is MAB(F098M)=26.9 mag. We also detect the expected trend of lower specific star formation rates for the highest mass galaxies in the sample, indicative of downsizing and discovered previously from large surveys. These results demonstrate the remarkable efficiency and capability of the WFC3 NIR grisms for measuring galaxy properties to faint magnitudes.

We present new HST/WFPC2 imagery and STIS long-slit spectroscopy of the planetary nebula NGC 7009. The primary goal was to obtain high spatial resolution of the intrinsic line ratio [O III] 4364/5008 and thereby evaluate the electron temperature (Te) and the mean-square Te variation (t(sup 2, sub A)) across the nebula. The observations here do not address Te fluctuation along the line of sight. The WFPC2 Te map is rather uniform; almost all values are between 9000 - 11,000 K, with the higher Te's closely coinciding with the inner He(++)-zone. The results indicate very small values - certainly less than 0.01 - for t(sup 2, sub A) throughout. Our STIS data allow an even more direct determination of Te and t(sup 2, sub A), albeit for a much smaller area than with WFPC2. We present results from binning the data along the slit into tiles that are 0.5 in square (matching the slit width). The average [O III] temperature using 45 tiles (excluding the central star and STIS fiducial bars) is 10,146 K; t(sup 2, sub A) is 0.0036. Although we have measured t(sup 2, sub A) in only 2-dimensions, we conclude that temperature fluctuations alone are unlikely to explain for NGC 7009 the large discrepancy between heavy element abundances inferred from emission lines that are collisionally excited compared with those that are due to recombination lines.

It is found that NGC 5548 contains a spatially extended high-excitation narrow-line region with line widths ranging between 500 and 100 km/s (FWHM). This nebulosity is elongated along the axis of the triple radio source. The peak of optical continuum light (nucleus) coincides with the peak of the forbidden O III 5007 A distribution.

The results of a search for H and K absorption in the halos of the two spiral galaxies projected against background QSOs are presented. The search was carried out using the blue-sensitive spectrograph attached to the Multiple Mirror Telescope (MMT). Despite good sensitivity (S/N of about 20) and high spectral resolution (1 A), no H and K absorption was found. Schematic illustrations of the nuclear and halo spectra of M61 and NGC 1300 are provided.

Details of the spatial structure of the narrow-line region (NLR) in NGC 4151 are presented, and the structure of the NLR is compared to that of the radio and X-ray emission. Results for the morphology and excitation of the NLR, the luminosity of the extranuclear features, and the kinematics are presented, citing published research. These results are used to test several models: the X-ray gas in pressure equilibrium with the adjacent NLR, the X-ray gas identified as shock-heated NLR clouds flowing supersonically through the ambient galactic interstellar medium, X-rays arising in SNR and massive X-ray binaries produced in bursts of star formation stimulated by nuclear outflow, and X-ray and line emission regions ionized indirectly by the radio jet.

The results of a survey of H I in radio-loud and interacting galaxies is presented. Four cases of H I absorption and five of emission are reported. The interesting features found for individual galaxies are described, and the systematic properties are discussed. Column densities of absorbing gas generally exceed those expected for a 'Milky Way' H I disk by more than an order of magnitude. The absorbing gas must have a flattened, disklike morphology oriented roughly parallel to the optical disk of the galaxy. Turbulent noncircular gas motions are evidently present, which are shown to be almost certainly induced by galaxy-galaxy interactions. The set of galaxies in which H I absorption has been detected is dominated by morphologically peculiar objects. It is concluded that the detection of H I seen in absorption against a nuclear radio source permits direct determination of the sense of radial flow of extranuclear material, and is direct evidence that potential 'food' for a compact object in the nucleus exists in the galaxy.

The spectral features detected in the fuzz of four probable quasars spanning the z range of 0.036-0.37 are reported; the objects studied are 0351 + 026 (z = 0.036), 1059 + 730 (z = 0.089), 0845 + 378 (z = 0.307), and 3C 48 (z = 0.368). The results indicate that apparently some (and probably all) low-redshift quasars are embedded in fuzz whose size, morphology, absolute magnitude, and spectroscopic character are those of a galaxy. Thus, it appears virtually certain that quasars are the active nuclei of galaxies.

Radio, optical and X-ray observations are presented of the peculiar radio galaxy 3C 433, a Seyfert 2 object with luminosity an order of magnitude greater than that expected from its complex, shell-type morphology. Observations conducted at 6 and 12 cm with the VLA and at 21 cm with the Westerbork telescope show a striking asymmetry between the northern and southern radio emissions, and an overall X-shaped morphology. Optical observations using the Video Camera and High Gain Video Spectrometer on the 4-m telescope and the Intensified Image Dissector Scanner on the 2.1-m telescope at Kitt Peak confirm the identification of the source with a pair of bright galaxies. Observations in the X-ray from the Einstein Observatory IPC reveal an unresolved source at the position of 3C 433, as well as two serendipitous X-ray sources. The observations may be used to explain the overall structure of the source either in terms of tidal torquing or precessing models of double galaxies; however, it is argued that the tidal torquing model requires fewer assumptions to account for the brightness asymmetry.

The results of a detailed investigation into the nature of the H I-rich quasi-stellar object 0351+026 are presented. An improved H I profile reveals the presence of two distinct components. A high-quality CCD image clearly shows the presence of two galaxies. The brighter galaxy hosts the QSO while the less luminous companion has a prominent, apparently stellar nucleus. Moreover, this image also shows streamers of nebulosity emanating from the two galaxies and has an overall morphology which is highly reminiscent of that seen in other strongly interacting galaxies. Optical spectroscopy of the system shows that the forbidden O III emission lies between the two nuclei and there is strong evidence of stellar absorption lines in both the host and companion galaxies. Overall, the data suggest that this system represents a violent encounter between two low-luminosity H I-rich galaxies. The possibility exists that this collision has triggered the QSO activity in the brighter galaxy.

Coordinates, dimensions, 4885-MHz flux densities, and brightness temperatures of K3-2, NGC 6833, Ps 1, II 5117, Me 2-2, Hb 12, Vy 1-1, and M1-5 are reported. In two other cases, H3-29 and H3-75, confused extended structure was detected in which the nebula could not be identified with certainty. He 2-467, M1-2, and Peterson's H-alpha object in M15 were also included in the observations but not detected with an upper limit of less than 10 mJy. The observations are compared with some of the previous optical and radio data, such as log S(H-beta). Distances are computed from the present data with standard assumptions. Corresponding linear radii range below 0.1 pc, among the smallest in previous distributions of radius.

New high-resolution observations of several H II regions are reported. Improved values for the physical parameters describing the structure are deduced from their continuum spectra. The results are compared with estimates obtained by other means. The data are found to agree surprisingly well with the results of Andrews et al. (1971). The relation between the structure and the parent H II region is also investigated.
