Search

We report on X-ray follow-up observations of the March 2018 nuclear transient event AT2018zf (ASASSN-18el) from an ongoing campaign that includes XMM-Newton, NuSTAR, Swift, and high cadence (daily-to-weekly) NICER observations. The event was associated with the Seyfert galaxy 1ES 1927+654, a "True Type-2" that, nevertheless, showed an X-ray spectrum typical of an unobscured Type 1 AGN. Optical monitoring revealed the emergence of broad Balmer emission lines following the outburst, suggesting a transition from a Type 2 to a Type 1 AGN on timescales consistent with the light-travel time between the central black hole and the broad line region. The optical outburst was followed by a dramatic shift in the X-ray spectrum as the hard X-ray luminosity of the corona plunged by >2 orders of magnitude and the spectrum became dominated by a 10^6 K thermal component. The subsequent X-ray evolution of 1ES 1927+654 includes an additional two-order of magnitude decline in overall luminosity, followed by an extended period of quiescence, and re-brightening to levels that make it the brightest AGN currently in the X-ray sky. Throughout its evolution, the source has displayed X-ray flux variability of factors of several on timescales less than hour, and of ~100 on timescales less than a day. The X-ray spectrum varies along a consistent luminosity-dependent track, wherein increases in flux are accompanied by a spectral hardening. We seem to be witnessing the onset of an instability in the pre-existing AGN disc and corona, followed by a still-continuing re-emergence of the corona. If the initial transient is identified as the tidal disruption of a star, it is possible that this was the instigator of this unique behavior.

We describe a probe-class mission concept that provides an unprecedented view of the X-ray sky, performing timing and 0.2-30 keV spectroscopy over timescales from microseconds to years. The Spectroscopic Time-Resolving Observatory for Broadband Energy X-rays (STROBE-X) has three key science drivers: (1) measuring the spin distribution of accreting black holes, (2) understanding the equation of state of dense matter, and (3) exploring the properties of the precursors and electromagnetic counterparts of gravitational wave sources. To perform these science investigations, STROBE-X comprises three primary instruments. The first uses an array of lightweight optics (3-m focal length) that concentrate incident photons onto solid state detectors with CCD-level (85-130 eV) energy resolution, 100 ns time resolution, and low background rates to cover the 0.2-12 keV band. This technology is scaled up from NICER, with enhanced optics to take advantage of the longer focal length of STROBE-X. The second uses large-area collimated silicon drift detectors, developed for ESA's LOFT, to cover the 2-30 keV band. These two instruments each provide an order of magnitude improvement in effective area compared with its predecessor (NICER and RXTE, respectively). Finally, a sensitive sky monitor triggers pointed observations, provides high duty cycle, high time resolution, high spectral resolution monitoring of the X-ray sky with ~20 times the sensitivity of the RXTE ASM, and enables multi-wavelength and multi-messenger studies on a continuous, rather than scanning basis. The STROBE-X mission concept is a rapidly repointable observatory in low-Earth orbit, similar to RXTE or Swift, and will be presented to the 2020 Astrophysics Decadal Survey for consideration as a probe-class mission.

We report on a Neutron star Interior Composition Explorer (NICER) observation of the Galactic X-ray binary and stellar-mass black hole candidate, MAXI J1535−571. The source was likely observed in an "intermediate" or "very high" state, with important contributions from both an accretion disk and hard X-ray corona. The 2.3-10 keV spectrum shows clear hallmarks of relativistic disk reflection. Fits with a suitable model strongly indicate a nearmaximal spin parameter of a = cJ/GM(exp 2) = 0.994(2) and a disk that extends close to the innermost stable circular orbit, r/r(sub ISCO) = 1.08(8) (1σ statistical errors). In addition to the relativistic spectrum from the innermost disk, a relatively narrow Fe K emission line is also required. The resolution of NICER reveals that the narrow line may be asymmetric, indicating a specific range of emission radii. Fits with a relativistic line model suggest an inner radius of r = 144 +140/-60 GM/c(exp 2) for the putative second reflection geometry; full reflection models suggest that radii a few times larger are possible. The origin of the narrow line is uncertain, but a warp likely provides the most physically plausible explanation. We discuss our results in terms of the potential for NICER to reveal new features of the inner and intermediate accretion disk around black holes.

We present results of recent Neutron Star Interior Composition Explorer (NICER) observations of the accreting millisecond X-ray pulsar (AMXP) IGR J17062-6143 that show that it resides in a circular, ultracompact binary with a 38-minute orbital period. NICER observed the source for 26 kiloseconds over a 5.3-day span in 2017 August, and again for 14 and 11 kiloseconds in 2017 October and November, respectively. A power spectral analysis of the August exposure confirms the previous detection of pulsations at 163.656 Hertz in Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) data, and reveals phase modulation due to orbital motion of the neutron star. A coherent search for the orbital solution using the Z squared method finds a best-fitting circular orbit with a period of 2278.21 seconds (37.97 minutes), a projected semimajor axis of 0.00390 lt-s (Localization Test Statistic), and a barycentric pulsar frequency of 163.6561105 Hertz. This is currently the shortest known orbital period for an AMXP. The mass function is 9.12 times 10 (sup minus 8) solar mass, presently the smallest known for a stellar binary. The minimum donor mass ranges from approximately 0.005 to 0.007 times the solar mass for a neutron star mass from 1.2 to 2 times the solar mass. Assuming mass transfer is driven by gravitational radiation, we find donor mass and binary inclination bounds of 0.0175-0.0155 times the solar mass and 19 degrees less than i less than 27.5 degrees, where the lower and upper bounds correspond to 1.4 and 2 times the solar mass neutron stars, respectively. Folding the data accounting for the orbital modulation reveals a sinusoidal profile with fractional amplitude 2.04 plus or minus 0.11 percent (0.3-3.2 kiloelectronvolts).

The combination of the wide-field monitor and the sensitive pointed instruments enables observations of potential electromagnetic counterparts to LIGO and neutrino events. Additional extragalactic science, such as high quality spectroscopy of clusters of galaxies and unprecedented timing investigations of active galactic nuclei, is also obtained

The Large Observatory For x-ray Timing (LOFT) is a mission concept which was proposed to ESA as M3 and M4 candidate in the framework of the Cosmic Vision 2015-2025 program. Thanks to the unprecedented combination of effective area and spectral resolution of its main instrument and the uniquely large field of view of its wide field monitor, LOFT will be able to study the behaviour of matter in extreme conditions such as the strong gravitational field in the innermost regions close to black holes and neutron stars and the supra-nuclear densities in the interiors of neutron stars. The science payload is based on a Large Area Detector (LAD, is greater than 8m2 effective area, 2-30 keV, 240 eV spectral resolution, 1 degree collimated field of view) and a Wide Field Monitor (WFM, 2-50 keV, 4 steradian field of view, 1 arcmin source location accuracy, 300 eV spectral resolution). The WFM is equipped with an on-board system for bright events (e.g., GRB) localization. The trigger time and position of these events are broadcast to the ground within 30 s from discovery. In this paper we present the current technical and programmatic status of the mission.

We present two different search methods for electromagnetic counterparts to gravitational-wave (GW) events from ground-based detectors using archival NASA high-energy data from the Fermi Gamma-ray Burst Monitor (GBM) and RXTE All-sky Monitor (ASM) instruments. To demonstrate the methods, we use a limited number of representative GW background noise events produced by a search for binary neutron star coalescence over the last two months of the LIGO-Virgo S6/VSR3 joint science run. Time and sky location provided by the GW data trigger a targeted search in the high-energy photon data. We use two custom pipelines: one to search for prompt gamma-ray counterparts in GBM, and the other to search for a variety of X-ray afterglow model signals in ASM. We measure the efficiency of the joint pipelines to weak gamma-ray burst counterparts, and a family of model X-ray afterglows. By requiring a detectable signal in either electromagnetic instrument coincident with a GW event, we are able to reject a large majority of GW candidates. This reduces the signal-to-noise ratio of the loudest surviving GW background event by around 15-20 percent.

The 2010 Astrophysics Decadal Survey recommended a significant technology development program towards realizing the scientific goals of the International X-ray Observatory (IXO). NASA has undertaken an X-ray mission concepts study to determine alternative approaches to accomplishing IXO's high ranking scientific objectives over the next decade given the budget realities, which make a flagship mission challenging to implement. The goal of the study is to determine the degree to which missions in various cost ranges from $300M to $2B could fulfill these objectives. The study process involved several steps. NASA released a Request for Information in October 2011, seeking mission concepts and enabling technology ideas from the community. The responses included a total of 14 mission concepts and 13 enabling technologies. NASA also solicited membership for and selected a Community Science Team (CST) to guide the process. A workshop was held in December 2011 in which the mission concepts and technology were presented and discussed. Based on the RFI responses and the workshop, the CST then chose a small group of notional mission concepts, representing a range of cost points, for further study. These notional missions concepts were developed through mission design laboratory activities in early 2012. The results of all these activities were captured in the final X-ray mission concepts study report, submitted to NASA in July 2012. In this presentation, we summarize the outcome of the study. We discuss background, methodology, the notional missions, and the conclusions of the study report.

We present an intensive radio and X-ray monitoring campaign on the 2009 outburst of the Galactic black hole candidate X-ray binary H1743-322. With the high angular resolution of the Very Long Baseline Array, we resolve the jet ejection event and measure the proper motions of the jet ejecta relative to the position of the compact core jets detected at the beginning of the outburst. This allows us to accurately couple the moment when the jet ejection event occurred with X-ray spectral and timing signatures. We find that X-ray timing signatures are the best diagnostic of the jet ejection event in this outburst, which occurred as the X-ray variability began to decrease and the Type C quasi-periodic oscillations disappeared from the X-ray power density spectrum. However, this sequence of events does not appear to be replicated in all black hole X-ray binary outbursts, even within an individual source. In our observations of H1743-322, the ejection was contemporaneous with a quenching of the radio emission, prior to the start of the major radio flare. This contradicts previous assumptions that the onset of the radio flare marks the moment of ejection. The jet speed appears to vary between outbursts with a positive correlation outburst luminosity. The compact core radio jet reactivated on transition to the hard intermediate state at the end of the outburst and not when the source reached the low hard spectral state. Comparison with the known near-infrared behaviour of the compact jets suggests a gradual evolution of the compact jet power over a few days near beginning the and end of an outburst

We present new X-ray, radio, and optical data for the unusual galaxy/cluster system J2310-437. Our results confirm the presence of an active nucleus and suggest an interpretation as an anomalous BL Lac object of bulk relativistic Doppler factor <2, with an optically deficient radio to X-ray spectrum. The radio, optical, and soft X-ray flux densities could lie along a single power-law function, lacking the curvature typical of BL Lac objects. Compared with other known sources that may have comparable multi-frequency spectra, J2310-437 is the most extreme. Its low isotropic optical/Ultraviolet (UV) radiation is consistent with the intensity of external photons governing the electron spectral break through Compton cooling; in this source the external photon density would be too low to produce a spectral break below the X-ray.

We discuss the properties of the Seyfert 1.5 galaxy LB 1727 based upon the analysis of two ASCA observations, a two-month Rosat monitoring campaign, and optical data. The target is identified with the HEAO-A1 source 1H0419-577, so it has been observed by ASCA and ROSAT in order to obtain better X-ray variability and spectra data. Only modest (20%) variability is observed within or between ASCA and BeppoSAX observations in the approximately 2 - 10 keV band. However, the soft X-ray flux increased by a factor of 3 over a period of 2 months, while it was monitored daily by the ROSAT HRI instrument. The hard X-ray continuum can be parameterized as a power-law of slope Gamma approximately 1.5 - 1.6 across 9.7 - 11 keV in the rest-frame. We also report the first detection of an iron K(alpha) line in this source, consistent with emission from neutral material. The X-ray spectrum steepens sharply below 0.7 keV yielding a power-law of slope Gamma approximately 3.2. There is no evidence for absorption by neutral material, instrinsic to the nucleus. If the nucleus is unattenuated, then the break energy between the soft-excess and hard component is 0.7+/-0.08 keV. An ionized absorber may produce some tum-up in the spectrum at low energies, but a steepening of the underlying continuum is also required to explain the simultaneous ASCA and HRI data. We cannot rule out the possibility that a significant column of ionized material exists in the line-of-sight, if that is true, then the continuum break-energy can only be constrained to lie within the approximately 0.1 - -0.7 keV band.

We describe a search for a new type of object - large clouds of hot gas with no visible galaxies - which we call failed clusters of galaxies. We calculate the expected X-ray luminosity, temperature, and angular diameter of such objects as a function of total cloud mass and convert the results to expected X-ray fluxes from failed clusters at different redshifts. Using the Einstein Imaging Proportional Counter (IPC) database, we establish a strategy to search for candidate failed clusters. From this initial screening of 1435 IPC fields, 17 candidates are selected for more detailed analysis, which indicates that 10 of these are very probably extended X-ray sources. Optical follow-up on the 10 prime candidates finds eight clusters of galaxies (including six reproted for the first time in this paper), one stellar identification, and one without an obvious optical counterpart (the candidate with the weakest evidence for X-ray extent). Investigation of several candidates with less evidence for X-ray extent yields two additional new clusters of galaxies. A conservative comparison of our results with the Einstein Extended Medium Sensitivity Survey demonstrates that failed clusters are a relatively unimportant contributor to the mass density of the universe. Our inability to find failed clusters is consistent with the hierarchical clustering scenario for the formation of galaxies and clusters.

We present the results of an optical search for ionized gaseous nebulae surrounding luminous, "supersoft" X-ray sources in the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds. This relatively new and mysterious X-ray class has characteristic luminosities approximately 10(exp 37) - 10(exp 38) ergs/s with effective temperatures in the range of 2 - 6 x 10(exp 5) K. The presence of a large flux of UV and soft X-ray photons from these objects has led to predictions of bright optical emission lines from the local interstellar medium. One such object, CAL 83 in the LMC, was known to have an associated nebula, and we quantify here the asymmetry and luminosity of this remarkable nebula. Deep images were made using narrowband filters to isolate the emission lines of H.alpha and [O III] (lamda5007). In these emission lines, the nebula is detected out to distances as far as 25 pc from the central object, and the integrated luminosity in each line is of order approximately 100 solar luminosity. Model calculations of such nebulae for chemical abundances characteristic of the LMC indicate that approximately 1% of the X-ray luminosity of the central source is reprocessed into the nebular H.alpha and [O III] lamda5007 emission lines, from which we conclude that the time-averaged X-ray luminosity of the central source, CAL 83, is greater than 3 x 10(exp 37) ergs/s. The bright inner nebula contains approximately 150 solar mass within 7.5 pc of CAL 83, which clearly indicates that the nebular material has its origin in the interstellar medium. In sharp contrast, there were null detections for nebulae associated with nine other luminous, supersoft X-ray sources in the LMC and SMC, with upper limits for the [O III] luminosity that are a factor of approximately 10 below that for CAL 83. For eight of these latter sources, we conclude that either their time-averaged luminosity is substantially below that of CAL 83, or that the local interstellar medium is much less dense. The latter effect may be enhanced by expansion of the ionized nebula during the last several million years.

We report the discovery of two cataclysmic variables located with the assistance of X-ray positions from the HEAO 1 Modulation Collimator and the Large-Area Sky Survey. Each case is distinguished by evidence of two periodic modulations that appear to represent the orbital period and the spin period of the white dwarf, respectively. The first case, H0459 + 246, has been observed optically during faint states (V approximately 16), in which there are spectral features of both an accretion disk and a K star. The light curves in the V and I bands are consistent with ellipsoidal variations in the secondary stars with a binary period of 9.952 hr. X-ray observations with EXOSAT reveal a strong pulsation with a period approximately 62 minutes. This result confirms an 'intermediate polar' classification for H0459 + 246. The pulsation is observed at 63.2 minutes in the optical I band. The long orbital period opens the possibility that H0459 + 246 is a relatively young intermediate polar that might evolve into a polar. The second case, H0857--242, shows radial velocity modulations at 1.78 hr along with photometric variations at a period approximately 49 minutes. The latter are observed only during the decay phase of dwarf nova outbursts (13 less than V less than 17), which apparently recur frequently. Given the lack of X-ray monitoring observations and the absence of proof that the 49 minute periodicity is coherent over long time-scales, we regard H0857--242 as a candidate intermediate polar. Photographic records from th e Harvard Observatory Plate Library further reveal superoutbursts for H0857--242 (V approximately 11). A bright X-ray source that is both an intermediate polar and a continually cycling dwarf nova may provide an effective means of measuring the time delay for the arrival of accreting matter at the white dwarf surface, relative to the onset of optical brightening.

A remarkable X-ray transient from the Einstein Slew Survey, 1 ES 1113+432, is identified with a nearby, short-period cataclysmic variable. Wenzel (1993) has confirmed that the optical counterpart is the variable star, AR UMa (cataloged as 'semiregular'), erroneously reported 5.7 min southeast of the true position. One of the Einstein slew observations recorded a flux of 43 IPC counts/s, which is an order of magnitude above the flux observed from the brightest cataclysmic variables in other X-ray surveys. The outburst spectrum is extremely 'soft,' with an implied blackbody temperature of approximately 22 eV. The optical counterpart (V = 16.5) exhibits a strong UV component, TiO bands from an M star, and broadened Balmer emission lines. Optical states as bright as V approx. 13 were found on photographs from the Harvard Plate Library, confirming outburst behavior in the optical counterpart. The historical photographic record suggests that 1ES 1113+432 remains in a low-accretion state most of the time. Both of the soft X-ray spectrum and the transitions between high and low-accretion states are suggestive of the AM Her (magnetic) subclass. Photometric observations in the I band show 0.18 mag modulations at a period of 0.966 hr. These are interpreted as ellipsiodal variations in the secondary star for a binary period of 1.932 hr, which is near the lower boundary of the 'period gap' in the histogram, of orbital periods of accreting white dwarfs. Thus 1ES 1113+432 provides the rare opportunity to study a secondary star in a cataclysmic binary that has evolved through the period gap. The optical spectral features from the secondary imply a spectral type of approximately M6 and a distance of approximately 88 pc. The peak luminosity in the soft X-ray component (unabsorbed) is then estimated to be 3 X 10(exp 33) ergs/s, assuming emission from a blackbody slab with a temperature of 22 eV. While this luminosity is higher than previous measures of the soft X-ray component, it does not exceed the amount of radiation that could be emitted from the accretion-heated surface of a white dwarf.

We report 22 emission-line AGN as bright, hard X-ray sources. All of them appear to be new classifications with the exception of one peculiar IRAS source which is a known quasar and has no published spectrum. This sample exhibits a rich diversity in optical spectral properties and luminosities, ranging from a powerful broad-absorption-line quasar to a weak nucleus embedded in a nearby NGC galaxy. Two cases confer X-ray luminosities in excess of 10 exp 47 erg/s. However, there is a degree of uncertainty in the X-ray identification for the AGN fainter than V about 16.5. Optically, several AGN exhibit very strong Fe II emission. One Seyfert galaxy with substantial radio flux is an exception to the common association of strong Fe II emission and radio-quiet AGN. The previously recognized IRAS quasar shows extreme velocities in the profiles of the forbidden lines; the 0 III pair is broadened to the point that the lines are blended. Several of these AGN show evidence of intrinsic obscuration, illustrating the effectiveness of hard X-ray surveys in locating AGN through high column density.

A deeply eclipsing cataclysmic variable, with an orbital period of 4.75 hr, has been discovered in the southern Edinburgh-Cape Blue Object Survey. The star, EC 19314 - 5915, lies close to the positional constraints of a previously unidentified HEAO-1 hard X-ray source, 1H1930 - 5989. Its optical spectrum is unusual in that it shows, apart from the emission lines characteristic of a novalike, or dwarf nova cataclysmic variable (Balmer, He I and He II), metallic absorption lines typical of a late-G star. The individual time-resolved spectra, with the tertiary absorption lines removed, show absorption reversals in the Balmer emission lines, increasing in strength for the higher series. The Balmer emission radial velocities are therefore severely distorted in comparison to the He II 4686-A emission and He I 4471-A absorption radial velocity curves. An independent distance estimate of about 600 pc is derived for EC19314 - 5915, from the spectroscopic parallax of the third star.

The evolution of the emission-line Star S-154, between February and December 1988, from a low-excitation 'Fe II star' into a high-excitation state that resembles symbiotic stars, is traced. It is inferred that the spectral type of central stars do not always dominate the physical conditions in the circumstellar material and thereby determine the nebular classification. The membership of S-154 in the LMC was confirmed with a radial velocity measurement of +274 km/s. The historical light curve (1880-1990) obtained from 346 photograph plates of the Harvard Plate Library exhibits about 4 mag of variations, with an MB range of -6 to -2. No evidence was found for coherent modulations that would represent the orbital period of a symbiotic binary.

Evidence from a concurrent X-ray/optical observing program is presented which indicates that the orbital period of the anomalous AM Her-type cataclysmic variable H0538 + 608 (BY Cam) differs from the rotational period by 1.3 +/- 0.1 percent. This finding would explain much of the unusual behavior previously exhibited in optical photometry and polarimetry. The model proposed by Ishida et al. (1991) is developed further using observations of accretion and the primary characteristics of optical and X-ray light curves and radial velocity measures of H-alpha. An optical QPO with a period of about 30 min was seen on two nights and possible causes of it are discussed.

HB9 is a 2-deg-diameter radio shell with X-ray emission from a broad diffuse band in the interior. Within this band, a weak unresolved X-ray source coincides with the radio source 4C 46.09. To identify this source CCD I and V band pictures and a spectrum were obtained. The source is a galaxy at redshift 0.195, and is therefore only accidentally aligned with HB9. The galaxy is large and bright and has the characteristics of a cD galaxy, often found at the center of clusters. If the galaxy is centered in a cluster, some of the surrounding diffuse X-rays may also be extragalactic.

The highly variable X-ray luminosity of LMC X-3 is found to be strongly modulated with a period of about 198 (or possibly about 99) days. Observations from satellites show this periodic variation. For energies of less than 13 keV, the X-ray intensity and hardness are positively correlated; for higher energies, there appears to be no correlation. Available optical photometry indicates the mean V brightness also varies by more than 1 mag with this same long-term period. The regularity of this 'clock' in LMC X-3 suggests that it may be related to an accretion-disk precession, similar to that seen in LMC X-4, Her X-1, SS 433, or possibly periodic variations in the mass-transfer rate.

The discovery is reported of an eclipsing cataclysmic variable that exhibits up to 10 percent circular polarization at optical wavelengths, securing its classification as an AM Herculis type binary. The object, H1907 + 609, was located with the guidance of X-ray positions from the HEAO 1 survey. Optical CCD photometry exhibits deep eclipses, from which is derived a precise orbital period of 1.743750 hr. The eclipse duration suggests an inclination angle about 80 deg for a main-sequence secondary star. The optical flux has been persistently faint during observations spanning 1987-1990, while the X-ray measurements suggest long-term X-ray variability. The polarization and photometric light curves can be interpreted with a geometric model in which most of the accretion is directed toward a single magnetic pole, with an accretion spot displaced about 17 deg in longitude from the projection of the secondary star on the white dwarf surface.

A recent observation from the Ginga satellite of the quasar PKS0558 - 504 is reported during which the X-ray flux increased by 67 percent in the space of only three minutes. There was no significant change in the spectrum. Comprehensive analysis of the data strongly indicates that this was a genuine X-ray flare originating in the quasar. The implied rate of change in luminosity in the 2-10 keV range, assuming a Hubble constant of 70 km/s/Mpc, and a cosmological deceleration parameter q0 = 0.5, is 3.2 x 10 to the 42nd erg/sq s, the highest value measured for a quasar. When photon scattering is considered, this is about 16 times greater than could be produced, with a three-minute rise time, in an isotropically emitting plasma. It is argued that the apparent luminosity must be enhanced by relativistic beaming. This is the first indication of beaming in an 'ordinary' unpolarized quasar.

Results from a Ginga observation of the AM Her type object H0538 + 608 are presented. During the first half of the observation (pulsing state) the source showed periodic modulations caused by the white dwarf rotation, and the modulation profile was characterized by a flat top and a flat bottom. During the second half, the source was in a remarkable flaring state and the periodic modulation disappeared. The dramatic change of the X-ray light curve is interpreted in terms of a change of accretion pattern between an eclipsing spot and a noneclipsing spot. The spectrum is well described throughout by a thin thermal model including an iron K-line with equivalent width of some hundred eV, supporting the standard model for the hard X-ray emission region. The temperature in the pulsing state was found to change with the spin phase of the white dwarf. In the flaring state, the temperature showed a positive correlation with the source luminosity.

The discovery is reported of the second cataclysmic variable with a binary period lying well inside the nominal 2-3 hr period gap. The object, 1H 0709-360, is an X-ray source which has been identified on the basis of positional data from the instruments of the HEAO 1 survey. The X-ray source was also detected by the Uhuru and Ariel 5 surveys. Multicolor photometry has revealed eclipsing behavior at an orbital period of 2.444 hr. Radial velocity measurements show modulations at the same period, with an offset between the spectroscopic and photometric conjunctions. Both the eclipse profile and a clear rotational disturbance in the radial velocities of emission lines during eclipse provide unambiguous evidence for the existence of an accretion disk. Thus the object cannot be an AM Herculis variable, a conclusion supported by the absence of circular polarization. Instead, the evidence suggests that the object could be a DQ Herculis magnetic variable that is close to synchronism. The evolutionary implications of this rare object are discussed.

The star LB 1800 has been discovered to be a 13th mag high-excitation cataclysmic variable exhibiting novalike characteristics and partial eclipses in its light curve. It has subsequently been identified as the optical counterpart of the transient hard X-ray source 4U 0608-49 following analysis of HEAO 1 data. Both the radial velocity and photometric variations have a period of 5.56 hr, while the K-velocity of the relatively uncomplicated radial velocity curves is 134 + or - 9 km/s, leading to a mass function of 0.058 + or - 0.003 solar mass. The dynamical and eclipse solutions point to an orbital inclination of 87 deg + or - 3 deg and a mass ratio of 0.46 + or - 0.04 for the empirical secondary mass 0.55 solar mass. The implied white dwarf mass is therefore quite high at about 1.2 solar mass. The disk size, from timings of first and last contact, was estimated to be very close to that of the secondary star. Phase-dependent, double-peak emission lines are sometimes observed. It is argued that the orbital variations in the relative strengths of the red and blue peaks arise from changing hot-spot visibility.

A 15th-mag, X-ray-selected BL Lac object, H1722 + 119, has been discovered to possess a steep X-ray spectrum with power-law energy index near 1.3; radio measurements indicate a variable, compact source with 1.4-4.9 GHz power-law energy index of 0.04. The optical-IR polarization of H1722 + 119 reaches a maximum of 17 percent, which is much higher than other X-ray-selected BL Lac objects. The degree of polarization is found to be wavelength-dependent, decreasing monotonically toward the IR.

The capabilities of the X-ray Timing Explorer (XTE) are described with particular attention paid to current scientific problems it will address from galactic neutron star systems to active galactic nuclei. It features a low-background continuous 2-200 keV response with large apertures (a 0.63 sq m proportional counter array and a 0.16 sq m dual rocking NaI/CsI scintillation array). Rapid response (in hours) to temporal phenomena, e.g. transients, is obtained by virtue of a scanning all-sky monitor and rapid maneuverability. XTE will carry out detailed energy-resolved studies of phenomena close to neutron stars (e.g. QPO's) because of its submillisecond timing, its high telemetry rates, and the high throughput of its data system.

Two 16th magnitude BL Lac objects, H1101 - 232 and H1426 + 428, have been discovered. Each is a persistent and relatively bright X-ray source. A 2.7 percent linear polarization is measured in the optical emission or H101 - 232. The X-ray identification of H1426 + 428 is confirmed in an Exosat observation. The X-ray spectrum is well-modeled by a power law with an energy index of 1.19. Both BL Lac objects exhibit high f(x)/f(opt) ratios and they show a distinct resemblance to other X-ray selected BL Lac objects. The host galaxies are about 18th mag with angular diameters of about 20 arcsec and each may be the dominant member of a cluster of galaxies. Additional wide-slit spectroscopy reveals faint absorption features with redshifts of 0.129 for H1426 + 428 and 0.186 for H1101 - 232. The implied X-ray and optical luminosities exceed 10 to the 45th ergs/s for both BL Lac nuclei, assuming isotropic emission.

Simultaneous observations of the AM Her type variable H0538+608 made with IUE, EXOSAT, and a 1.3 m ground based telescope, and subsequent optical spectrophotometry at high and low resolution are discussed. The X-ray and optical data show clear evidence of a 3.30 + or - 0.03 hr period. Three SWP spectra were taken outside of eclipse and during overlapping phase intervals. The UV spectra contain strong emission lines characteristic of this class of objects and a flat continuum which appears to be deficient, given the brightness of source at optical and X-ray wavelengths. There is evidence for intensity variations in emission lines, particularly C IV. The X-ray light curves for H0538+608 reveal behavior which may be related to irregularities in its accretion flow.

The identification of three high-latitude HEAO I Scanning Modulation Collimator X-ray sources with the chromospherically active RS CVn-like stars HD 113816, HD 146413, and HD 39576 is reported. Optical observations, including coude spectroscopy and broad-band and narrow band photoelectric photometry are presented. The Ca II emission strength of all three stars shows that they are chromospherically active. HD 146413 and HD 39576 exhibit variable X-ray emission in the 1-13 keV energy range, while HD 113816 is a softer and steadier source. The level of X-ray flux detected from these three stars is some one to two orders of magnitude higher than predicted empirically from the Ca II emission fluxes. It is proposed that this emission results from flarelike activity.

The optical identification of two faint HEAO 1 X-ray sources with previously uncataloged cataclysmic variables is reported. The two cataclysmic variables, 1H 0542 - 407 and H0534 - 581, have average V magnitudes of about 15.7 and about 14.9, and have similar high excitation spectra with moderate to strong He II 4686 A emission. X-ray measurements and multicolor optical photometry for both objects establish 1H 0542 - 407 as a new DQ Herculis magnetic variable having a white dwarf rotation period of about 1920 s and an orbital period near 6.2 hr. 1H 0542 - 407 is unusual among DQ Her systems in having a large soft X-ray pulse fraction of about 70 percent semiamplitude below 1 keV. No definitive X-ray or optical periodicities were detected from H0534 - 581, but it appears to be either a nova-like variable or a DQ Her system. Both cataclysmic variables have very hard X-ray spectra, with evidence for iron line emission at about 6.7 keV from 1H 0542 - 407.

Optical emission, soft X-rays, and hard X-rays have been observed simultaneously from the black hole candidate GX 3339-4 in a typical high state. Each of these components is interpreted as arising from a characteristic region of the accretion disk. Considered as a black hole, GX 339-4 lacks the variable 2 keV blackbody component that would be emitted from the 'solid' surface of a neutron star in the low-mass neutron star binaries. The X-ray emission in the high state is therefore extremely soft and stable in time. The intermediate disk region is optically thick and geometrically thin. The observed soft X-ray component with a 'disk blackbody' spectrum comes from this region. The innermost disk region is dynamically unstable due to the effect of general relativity and possibly due to radiation pressure. This region is responsible for the generation of the hard X-ray tail through Comptonization.

CCD photometry obtained with the 1.3-m McGraw-Hill telescope during 1981-1985 and 490-560-nm spectra obtained at KPNO on Jan. 17, 1985, are reported for A0620-00. The mass of the compact X-ray source is found to have lower limit 3.20 solar mass, strongly implying that it is a black hole; its mass is shown to exceed 7.3 solar mass if the K dwarf fills its Roche lobe during quiescence.

Results of a multiband, multiepoch series of observations are reported, demonstrating beyond reasonable doubt that H 0323 + 022 is a remarkably variable BL Lac object. The optical nebulosity around the stellar object is confirmed, the stellar optical radiation is polarized, the radio characteristics and the overall electromagnetic spectrum resemble those of other BL Lac objects. Variability is seen in all bands, including radio and broad-band optical variations in days, optical polarization changes on time scales of tens of minutes, and X-ray changes on time scales of about 30 s. H 0323 + 022 is an active galactic nucleus with much of the observed emission emerging from a region less than about 10 to the 12th to 10 to the 14th cm in size.

The discovery of an AM Herculis-type magnetic variable, an accreting binary system that contains a magnetic white dwarf and a late-type companion, is reported. The proposed optical counterpart to the detected X-ray source exhibits all the optical emission characteristics of its class: circular polarization, strongly modulated brightness variations, intense flickering on time scales of seconds, historical 'low states', and intense emission lines, including very strong lines of He II. The modulations in the polarization and the photometric magnitude suggest an orbital period of 3.1 + or -0.2 hr.

The eight 14th- and 15th-magnitude active galactic nuclei (AGNs) considered include one QSO and seven type 1 Seyferts; all were discovered in the course of a systematic program for the identification of the fainter X-ray sources of the HEAO 1 survey. While the X-ray and optical luminosities, and many of the optical emission features of the AGNs resemble other bright Seyfert 1s nearby, three of the galaxies exhibit very strong Fe II emission, and two show very weak forbidden line spectra. Photometric magnitudes and selected emission line intensities are given for each of the AGNs.

Two X-ray emitting cataclysmic variables were discovered as a result of a program to identify faint X-ray sources located by the HEAO-A3 modulation collimator experiment. The objects, H0534-581 and 1H0542-407, have similar high excitation spectra with intense emission lines showing broad and narrow components. Photometry shows that H0534-581 and 1H0542-407 have average magnitudes of V=14.9 and 15.7 respectively, leading to Lx/Lopt ratios of 1.5 (typical of dwarf novae in quiescence). While pronounced variability of delta B or = 1.5 mag is observed from both systems, there is no clear evidence for repeatable orbital periods between 1 and 4 hr.

The HEAO-1 satellite has produced the most complete, all-sky, X-ray survey. The sources extend to levels as faint as 1/2 Uhuru Flux Unit (UFU), with uncertain completeness below 1.25 UFU. Approximately 350 out of 840 sources have certain or highly probable optical counterparts. The identifications are necessary for estimating distances to the objects, so that properties are measured intrinsic to the source, and for establishing the classifications of the astronomical systems. There is also the opportunity to obtain TENMA and EXOSAT observations of X-ray spectra and time variability, since in general almost nothing is known of the X-ray characteristics of these weaker sources. Methods are here reviewed and the new active galactic nuclei X-ray counterparts are discussed.

Based on data obtained with the HEAO-1 Scanning Modulation Collimator (MC) experiment, candidate Be star systems and BL Lac objects are reported. Identification of the V = 6.6 star HD91188 as a Be star is confirmed, and X-ray luminosities ranging from 9 x 10 to the 32nd to 1.4 x 10 to the 34th ergs/s are derived. A B2 spectral type with a reddening E(B - V) = 0.42 is deduced for a V = 9.87 star which appears in an MC location diamond for the source 1H0550 + 286. A V = 16.5 ultraviolet excess object in the location 2A1058 - 226 = 3A1057 - 224 = 4U1057 - 21 = H1100 - 230 gave a 20 cm flux of 83 mJy, and a V = 16.2 ultraviolet excess object at 3A1422 + 425 = 1H143 + 423 was found to have a 20 cm flux of 33 mJy, suggesting their classification as BL Lac objects.

Some conflicting models have been proposed for Cyg X-2: a degenerate dwarf model which predicts a distance of 250 + or 50 pc; and a neutron star model which implies a distance of about 8000 pc. Based on a reddening study, it is found that the distance to Cyg X-2 is greater than 1100 pc, which rules strongly against the degenerate dwarf model. This conclusion is based on observations of the 2200 A feature in the spectrum of Cyg X-2 made with the International Ultraviolet Explorer (IUE), and UBV and spectroscopic observations of 38 field stars. For the reddening of Cyg X-2 values of E(B-V) = 0.40 + or - 0.07 (1 sigma) are found and are consistent with the reddening to infinity in that direction inferred from radio data. Consequently, Cyg X-2 may be located in the halo at about 8 kpc as proposed in 1979 by Cowley, Crampton, and Hutchings.

In general, the dips are observed to occur near superior conjunctions of the X-ray source, but one pair of 2-minute dips occurs when the X-ray source is closer to the observer than is the supergiant companion. The dips are analyzed spectrally with the aid of seven energy channels in the range 1.2-50 keV. Essentially, there is no change in the spectral index during the dips. Reductions in the count rates are observed at energies exceeding 6 keV for some of the dips, but the dip amplitude is always significantly greater in the 1.2-3 keV band. It is believed that absorption by partially ionized gas may best explain these results, since the observations of Pravdo et al. (1980) rule out absorption by unionized material. Estimates for the intervening gas density, extent, and distance from the X-ray source are presented. Attention is also given to the problems confronting the models for the injection of gas through the line of sight, believed to be inclined by approximately 30 deg from the binary pole.

Spectroscopic observations of the optical counterpart of LMC X-3 show it to be a spectroscopic binary in the Large Magellanic Cloud with an orbital period of 1.70 days. The B3 main-sequence primary has a large radial velocity amplitude indicating a mass function of 2.3 solar masses. LMC X-3 is an extremely luminous and variable X-ray source, but no 1.7 day X-ray periodicity has been detected. The lack of optical and X-ray eclipses limits the inclination to less than 70 degrees and implies a mass for the unseen star of more than 9.0 solar masses, if the B star has a normal mass. The system now appears to be the strongest evidence for the existence of a stellar mass black hole and is the first extragalactic example.

HEAO 1 has located a flaring X-ray source, H0323 + 022, at high galactic latitude. This source is identified with a V = 16.5 UV-excess object. While the counterpart has been observed on two occasions to have zero redshift absorption lines, these features have been absent on at least five other occasions. The high IR flux of the object indicates a multicomponent source. Einstein Observatory observations indicate that the X-ray source has two components, a steady soft component and a variable hard one which exhibits a pronounced 60-sec dip, as well as flaring activity, on time scales as small as six hours. A 5 GHz detection of the source, with a flux density of 41 + or - 1 mJy, has also been made by Feigelson et al (1982).

The paper presents results derived from UBV photometric observations of the 5.2 X-ray binary 4U 2129+47 which were made on 11 nights between 1978 October and 1979 August. The light curves observed during this period are relatively stable in shape and amplitude (Delta B = 1.5 mag) and are a surprisingly close match to the time-averaged light curves observed for HZ Her. There is a significant asymmetry in their shape which is independent of color and varies in amplitude by a factor of approximately 2. The UBV colors at minimum light suggest a considerably earlier spectral type (G or earlier) than is inferred by assuming that the star fills its Roche lobe (late K or early M). Optical pulsations were studied, and a 3 sigma limit of 0.5% was set on the fraction of the flux which is pulsed for periods between 60 ms and 300 s. Assuming that the optical companion is a normal main-sequence star filling its Roche lobe, its mass is approximately 0.65 solar mass. Assuming also that the compact object has a mass of 1.3 solar masses and that the orbital inclination of the system is approximately 90 deg, it is found that the orbital separation is approximately 1.9 solar radii and K-opt is approximately 300 km/s.

Spectral data for C49 in the globular cluster NGC 6712 are examined with reference to evolutionary models for low-mass stars that are contracting into white dwarfs. The spectrum of this star is found to be almost identical to that of the first sdO star found in a globular cluster, star A in NGC 6397. Analysis of the spectral data using nonlocal thermodynamic equilibrium models gives surface parameters T not less than 50,000 K, log g = 5.5 plus or minus 0.5, and N(He)/N(H) approximately equal to 0.1. The results are consistent with the models considered.

During the summer of 1978 the recurrent transient X-ray source, Aquila X-1, underwent its first major outburst in two years. This paper presents the results of extensive X-ray and optical observations of this event, which lasted for about two months. The peak X-ray luminosity was about 1.3 times that of the Crab and exhibited spectrum-dependent flickering on time scales of about 5 minutes. In addition, one very large flare was observed about one month after maximum that was also correlated with spectral changes. During this flare the previously identified optical counterpart brightened from V = 19 to a peak of V = 14.8, where it was distinctly blue (U - B = 0.4), and then reddened during the decay. These observations are interpreted in terms of a standard accretion disk model with particular emphasis on the similarities to Sco -1 and other dwarf X-ray systems.
