We report the discovery of four field methane (T-type) brown dwarfs using 2MASS survey data. One additional methane dwarf, previously discovered by SDSS, was also identified.

The Two Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS) will provide a uniform survey of the entire sky at three near-infrared wavebands: J(lambda(sub eff) = 1.25 micrometers), H(lambda(sub eff) = 1.65 micrometers), and K(sub s)(lambda(sub eff) = 2.16 micrometers). A major goal of the survey is to probe large scale structures in the Milky Way and in the Local Universe, exploiting the relatively high transparency of the interstellar medium in the near-infrared, and the high near-infrared luminosities of evolved low- and intermediate-mass stars. A sensitive overview of the near-infrared sky is also an essential next step to maximize the gains achievable with infrared array technology. Our assessment of the astrophysical questions that might be addressed with these new arrays is currently limited by the very bright flux limit of the only preceding large scale near-infrared sky survey, the Two Micron Sky Survey carried out at Caltech in the late 1960's. Near-infrared instruments based on the new array technology have already obtained spectra of objects 1 million times fainter than the limit of the TMSS! This paper summarizes the essential parameters of the 2MASS project and the rationale behind those choices, and gives an overview of results obtained with a prototype camera that has been in operation since May 1992. We conclude with a list of expected data products and a statement of the data release policy.

This paper describes the design, expectations, and prototyping of a new all sky survey, called 2MASS (Two Micron All Sky Survey) to be carried out with the new generation of infrared array detectors.

Double-peaked (C-12)O (1-0) emission centered on the young T Tauri star GG Tau possesses a line profile which may be modeled on the assumption that CO emission arises in an extended circumstellar disk. While bounds on the observed gas mass can be estimated on this basis, it is suggested that a large amount of mass could lie within a small and optically thick region, escaping detection due to beam-dilution effects. In addition, CO may no longer accurately trace the gas mass due to its dissociation, or freezing into grains, or due to the locking-up of carbon into more complex molecules.

The presence and evolutionary timescales of circumstellar disks surrounding solar-type premain-sequence stars are studied using excess IR radiation above photospheric levels. The analysis is based on optical photometry, published near-IR fluxes, IRAS fluxes, and 10-micron flux measurements of 20 stars in Taurus-Auriga obtained with the NASA IR telescope facility. About half of the stars with ages less than 3 Myr show excess 2.2 and 10 micron emission, consistent with emission from optically thick disks extending inward to the stellar surface. At ages of about 10 Myr, less than 10 percent of the sample stars show evidence of dust emission from optically thick disks. It is concluded that the timescale over which disks survive as IR-luminous, optically thick structures is less than 10 Myr. Also, evidence for inner holes in premain-sequence stars surrounded by optically thick disks is discussed.

Using a CCD camera on the IRTF telescope on Mauna Kea, a search was conducted for low-mass companions to stars in the solar neighborhood. The K band (2.2 microns) survey includes 55 condidates closer than 12 pc, as well as eight stars in the Pleiades star cluster. Due to the saturation of the primary star image, the survey was insensitive to companions within about 2 arcsec of the primary star. The survey detected a single low-mass candidate object, a companion to the star Gliese 569, which lies near or below the hydrogen-burning mass limit and resembles extremely low-mass stars similar to VB 10 and LHS 2924.

In infrared (2.2 micron, K-band) search of small regions (25 in square) near 26 members of the Taurus star-forming association has revealed 20 dim (K = 13-16 mag) stellar objects near 13 of them. Of these 20 objects, 9 are exceptionally red. It is argued that these 9 are probably also Taurus members. From the luminosities (0.4 to 4 times 10 the -3 power luminosity) and ages (estimated at 10(exp 6) years), masses can be determined by reference to theoretical low-mass cooling curves. The masses are in the range 0.005 to 0.015 solar mass, i.e., low-mass brown dwarfs. Proper motion studies of 7 of the objects visible on the POSS plates conducted by Burton Jones establish that 4 are highly probable Taurus members while 1 is a possible member.

Airborne infrared and ground-based UV observations of the forbidden Ne-V 24.3-micron and forbidden Ne-V 3426-A fine-structure lines of 17 planetary nebulae are discussed. Significantly higher Ne-V than O-IV temperatures are found for Hu 1-2 and NGC 2440, while IC 2165, NGC 6818, and NGC 7662 have similar Ne-V and O-IV temperatures. It is suggested that the Ne-V and O-IV temperature similarities may be due to the presence of large abundances of the dominant coolants (oxygen or neon) in the Ne-V zone.

The intergalactic cloud of neutral hydrogen in the M96 group are examined for signs of emission over a wide range of frequencies, from radio waves to X rays. Past or present stellar activity in the gas might have been expected to produce detectable visual infrared, CO, OH, or radio recombination-line emission. None was detected. The limits are used to study physical conditions in the intergalactic gas. In particular, B and V band limits on starlight and IRAS limits on the presence of dust strongly constrain the presence of stars or stellar by-products. However, given the uncertainties about physical conditions in the intergalactic environment, it is difficult to rule out entirely the presence of stellar-processed materials. Results of neutral hydrogen mapping from a large-scale survey of the intergalactic cloud and surrounding region are also presented. These observations confirm that the gas is confined to a large ringlike structure. The simplest interpretation remains that the intergalactic gas in Leo is primordial.

A faint cool companion to Gliese 569, discovered during an IR imaging survey of nearby stars, may be the lowest-mass stellar object yet found. The companion is somewhat cooler in its 1.65-3.75-micron energy distribution than the coolest known main-sequence stars, indicating a low mass. Despite its lower temperature, it is more luminous than similar extremely low-mass stars, suggesting that it is either a young low-mass star evolving toward the main sequence or a cooling substellar brown dwarf. The primary star has emission lines and a low space velocity and exhibits flaring, all of which imply youth for this system. Observations of Gliese 569 and its companion over a period of 2 yr confirm the common proper motion expected of a true binary. The 5-arcsec apparent separation (50 AU) implies an orbital period of roughly 500 yr, which will permit an eventual direct determination of the mass of the companion.

Near-infrared images of VB 8 taken at K (2.2 microns) and L-prime (3.75 microns) during a period of good seeing at the IRTF show no evidence of the brown dwarf companion reported by McCarthy et al. (1985). Any companion 1.0 arcsec away from the primary must be at least 4 mag fainter than the primary at K and 3 mag fainter at L-prime in order to escape detection. A faint nebula centered on the star with scattering properties similar to a nebula detected near another main-sequence M star, Lalande 21185 (reported by McCarthy in 1986), may account for the extended emission detected by speckle observations.

Upper limits have been set to the luminosity from the massive halos of three late-type edge-on spiral galaxies: NGC 2683 (Sb), NGC 4244 (Scd), and NGC 5907 (Sc). The limits resulted from simultaneous photometry in the visual (V) and 2.2-micron (K) photometric bands which is sensitive to both luminosity and color changes along the minor axes of the three galaxies. The mass-to-light ratios for the halo of NGC 5907 are the largest ever recorded: M/L(V) greater than 2000 and M/L(K) greater than 64 in solar units. The results virtually eliminate the possibility that hydrogen-burning stars comprise more than a fraction of the halo masses. Variations of the V-K color along and perpendicular to the disks show no sign of population changes toward redder objects at large galactocentric radii. The nucleus of NGC 5907 contains an unresolved source less than 330 pc in size with a 2.2-micron luminosity of order 5 x 10 to the 9th solar luminosity and may be an example of a starburst galactic nucleus overlooked by visual observations.

Near-infrared speckle interferometric observations of five pre-main-sequence stars reveal a core-halo structure around two of these stars: HL Tau and R Mon. The halo light distribution is shown to arise from scattered light from small circumstellar particles. Halo sizes of 320 x 200 AU (alpha x delta FWHM) and 1300 x 1300 AU are deduced for HL Tau and R Mon, respectively, and the halo light is substantially bluer than the stellar light. The minimum mass of small particles in the scattering regions is comparable to the earth's mass in HL Tau and ten times greater in R Mon. Mass loss from the stars is almost certainly insufficient to produce the halo matter. The halos probably consist of relatively slowly moving matter bound gravitationally to the stars. From the size and mass of the circumstellar matter, it appears likely that these halos are in the early stage in the formation of planet-forming disks around the young stars.

Low surface brightness photometry of the intergalactic neutral hydrogen cloud in Leo sets upper limits on the intensity of this object of 28.0 mag/sq arcsec in the V photometric band and 22.8 mag/sq arcsec in the K band. The corresponding ratio of the H I mass to blue luminosity in the H I emission peaks of the cloud must be greater than 2.9 (solar units) depending on the star formation history of the object. The limits imposed on the star formation rate suggest a strong dependence of this rate on gas density.
