Possibly some of the Americans who come to Greece for the first time as members of the American mission won't understand the hypocrisy, arrogance, deceit, and corruption which are the Greek government and the Greek ruling class today. The American embassy will cushion the shock. Dispassionately, patiently, it will brief the newcomers on the "complexities" of the situation.

The ordinary newspaper Greek in the written language has a character of unreality and indefiniteness, it is suited where it means to be dignified, and lacks in conciseness. The meaning of a whole column in most of the papers could often be given in a paragraph. There is a great deal of husk to a. very little kernel and that kernel often not worth the effort to reach it.

The people of Athens and the Greeks generally are greedy newspaper readers, but they find little comfort in their papers to-day. And with the discomforting news comes the uneasy sense of their helplessness. The court and pro-German papers, however skillfully phrased and with whatever arguments they may present, cannot disguise or attenuate the fact of the invasion of the Bulgarians nearly all along the frontier line of eastern and western Macedonia, and their occupation of Greek villages. Not only the national pride is lowered, but for those who have relatives and friends in the occupied territory there is the additional anxiety as to their safety.

The proof that the Greek government plays into Soviet hands is that the Soviet Union, as well as the United States, approves of the dictatorship.

In this large volume Perry has chosen a good model, and his publishers have done everything to assist him. They have given him "ample room and verge," fair paper, wide margins; they have permitted him numerous illustrations, which are generally interesting well chosen, and well executed. In these respects the work is an improvement upon its model. Albert Wolff's "Pantheon des Classischen Alterthums." Another excellent feature which Perry's plan shares with his German model is the abundance which it offers of extracts from the more important authors.

Nobody seems to be able to prophesy whether Venizelos and the Liberal party will be returned to power or a party pledged before all else to neutrality. All the press opposed to Venizelos preaches that his return will mean war, and that the people do not want war. The leader replies, through his paper, that the real question at issue today is whether Greece is a constitutional kingdom or not, whether it is the people or the crown that is to govern; that it is impossible at present to state whether ultimately Greece would take arms by the side of the Allies or remain at peace.

A significant part of the budget overrun is due to security costs.

The Greek situation has stumbled along in what has now become a state of chronic debility. The normal post-election confusion and intrigue will soon merge into the normal instability. Eventually there will be new elections, the pattern will be repeated, and the U.S. will continue to maintain in Greece the largest Marshall Aid mission in the world. In midsummer, when Field Marshal Alexander Papagos magnanimously responded to "the call of the people," and formed the Greek Rally movement, the State Department hopefully jumped on his bandwagon. Some, inspired stories came out of Washington in support of the Marshal's candidacy.

With the conquest of Greece, the German Chancellor, Adolf Hitler has achieved three objectives. He has ousted Great Britain from its last toehold on the mainland of Europe, excluding Gibralter; he has rescued his Italian partner from an extremely embarrassing situation; and he has considerably improved the strategic position of the Axis in relation to the vital British base in Egypt. There are, of course, several major obstacles 'to be overcome' before the Germans can strike at Suez with any assurance of success. Between Greece and Alexandria there is a wide stretch of water where the British navy remains dominant, even though its advanced base in Crete is now exposed to bombing attacks.

Just how thin the situation could wear was emphasized by the bomb blast that thundered through the Athens National Gardens on October 4, moments after U.S. Secretary of Defense Melvin R. Laird had laid a wreath at the tomb of Greece's Unknown Soldier a few hundred yards away. It is no wonder the Laird visit has been viewed with such complacency, since it came within a month after the United States announced that it would resume sales of heavy arms to Greece.

Friends of the military junta claim that there was no democracy in Greece before the coup of April 21, 1967, its enemies say that the revolution destroyed democracy. Paradoxically both are right. The Greece, which was invented in 1833, was poor and primitive; it was still poor and comparatively primitive a hundred years later. Economically there had been little industrialization and even by 1967 some 50 percent of the population was still employed on the land. Politically, a constitution of a sort was established in 1844 and another in 1864, when a Parliament was also created.

He made his announcement April 9, 1969 almost on the stroke of midnight, to a weary but roaring crowd of 2100 faithful come to pay him homage at $100 a plate.

The crisis began in July, 1965, when King Constantine summarily dismissed Prime Minister George Papandreou and proceeded to buy off enough of the deputies in Papandreou's party, the Center Union, to form, with the parliamentary votes of the right-wing parties, the puppet government of Premier Stephanopoulos, which lasted until December, 1966. The stage had been set as early as 1964, when George Papandreou at the head of the Center Union coalition captured an absolute majority of the parliamentary seats. He broke the control of the rural gendarmerie over the countryside, renegotiated contracts with large foreign monopolies on terms more favorable to Greece, reformed the educational system and introduced an air of political freedom by severely limiting the political activities of the dossier-keeping security forces and by proclaiming a general amnesty for political prisoners.

The Greek King's motto "My power lies in the love of my people," but for three months now, King Constantine has had to be protected" from some of his people by tear-gas bombs, high-pressure anti-riot fire trucks, policemen by the thousands, and army units that have encircled the city. More important, the Greek nation is in complete disarray: without, in effect, a government; with an unruly sectarian parliament, a jerrybuilt throne and a confused, frustrated people. The crisis was not fortuitous, nor was it simply a consequence of the constitutional issue, the king defiantly usurping a prime minister's right to name his own ministers. And it was not caused by the palace's fear of Communist infiltration of the armed forces, the armed forces having been securely controlled by the royalist-right wing for more than twenty years. What is going on in Greece is basically a power struggle.

University chairs of general religious history were established in Holland in 1876 and in France in 1880, and their example has been followed to some extent in this country and in Japan. The endowment of Henry Wilde has now given Oxford University a lectureship in natural and comparative religion and the choice of the first Wilde lecturer has happily fallen on a scholar whose distinguished services to the history of Greek religion are recognized everywhere. Lewis R. Farnell in the book "Greece and Babylon: A Comparative Sketch of Mesopotamian, Anatolian, and Hellenic Religions," has chosen as the theme of his first course the religious influence of the East on the West, in the East he includes Babylonia, Assyria and Asia Minor.

The comparative accord with which the Security Council has accepted the U.S. resolution on Greece is more than welcome, though there should be no pretense that the terms of reference are broad enough to enable the United Nations to reach a solution of the real problem of Greece. There was, accordingly, only one question to be decided, the degree of Staktopoulos's complicity in the murder. On the basis of his own confession his complicity was pretty well established, the degree of his complicity was not. The more basic question of who killed the correspondent in Salonika, Greece on May 8, 1948, was left unanswered. From the moment Polk's body was found in the Bay of Salonika, Greek authorities have insisted that he was murdered by Communists.

American aid to Greece is not an experiment in true and sincere assistance performed by a great and generous country. Despite the hundreds of millions of dollars the U.S. has poured into Greece, most objective observers agree that the Communist Party is showing surprising strength as the day approaches for the Greek national elections.

The conjuncture of events in Greece, Turkey and Iran, all of them indicating great social instability, is strikingly significant. For they are precisely the three countries in which the cold war began in 1946 and 1947. It was in Iran in 1945-46 that the United States first perfected its get tough policy and helped to force the Russians out; and it was in Greece and Turkey in 1947 that the United States charted its commitment to an anti-Communist Europe in its first military-aid crash program, the Truman Doctrine. Now, sixteen years after that intervention, the Greek government planned a monument for former U.S. President Harry S. Truman, showing him, several times life-size, holding his great charter in his hand.

According to the author, the elements which have most to fear from communism are trying to put forward the elections, scheduled to be held on January 20, 1946, and that those who have most to gain from the introduction of even the mildest Socialist principles are doing all they can to have them postponed. It is very depressing to revisit Greece one year after its liberation. The tragedy is deep and overpowering. Greece today is a country to which the fascist ministers and financial backers of Dictator John Metaxas can return in safety and resume their brutal exploitation of the Greek people. It is a country where the people are so hungry that last month when the liner political leader Gripsholm brought these fascists back from the U.S., where they had been living in luxury, men in little boats fought viciously over the garbage dumped by the ship in the harbor of Piraeus.

This article analyzes the basic fallacy in the Allied administration of liberated countries after the war. Ever since the Allies sailed into the Mediterranean at the beginning of November 1942, they have been making a mess of things. It would be profitless to apportion blame in all but the actually present state of Greece, where the British government is now solely responsible for maintaining the pretensions of precisely those reactionary elements of European society, which had innocently supposed in September 1939, were at long last permitted to destroy. The Allies began by appointing Jean Francois Darlan in charge of Greece, who was assassinated after two months leading the country in to civil war.

The news of mutiny in the Greek army and navy in the Near East was not surprising to persons acquainted with the background of the outbreak. The Greek delegation had gone to Egypt to stress the necessity for national unity, which alone, the members believe, could insure the success of the national struggle and the normal development of the country. The National Liberation Front, the most powerful underground group represented in the delegation, also demanded the formation of a coalition government in which all political parties and organizations would participate. The British were getting off from whatever northern ports they could, but eventually the remnants of the rear guard must come down through Thebes to Athens. Small truck farmers found neat swastika flags placed at the four corners of their garden patches. Owners of livestock were ordered to turn over their flocks and herds. The looting was accompanied by daily blasts in the newspapers announcing the acute concern of the German authorities for the admittedly critical food shortage and their valiant efforts to cooperate with the Greek officials in meeting the situation.

The New York "World" has recently brought out again the well-known fact that when Rumania proposed to act alone in Hungary, precisely as France is doing in the Ruhr, France and the other Allies prevented this foolish step in the interest of world peace and justice. Forgetful entirely of the way in which Great Britain stirred up Turkey and Greece to hostilities against one another by sending British naval commissions, to those countries to build up their respective navies, the U.S. has dispatched a similar commission of American naval officers, headed by a rear admiral, to Brazil to build up the Brazilian navy-incidentally, no doubt, to drum up business for our idle shipyards.

Asia Minor and Thrace have no sooner "gone Turkish" than Italy, with no better apparent excuse than the weakness of Greece, denounces the Italo-Greek agreement of 1920, and announces that she will hold the Dodecanese Islands in the AElig;gean Sea. Similarly, the elections of 1920, in Greece took them unawares. Then, the defeat of Eleftherios Venizelos was conveniently explained away, however, by the assertion that the Greeks were, like every one else in the world, war weary, and bad voted against Venizelos to escape further military service.
