Abstract

The article presents the summary of a study which depicts that specific PfEMP1 types encoding DC8 or DC17 cassettes bind to brain endothelial cells. The study provide a molecular basis for the entry of Plasmodium falciparum-infected erythrocytes to brain vessels, and shows that cerebral binding variants are not restricted to brain endothelial cells. It offers information that each P. falciparum genome contains around 60 different var genes that are expressed in a mutually exclusive way.
