Introduction. The aim of this study was to translate the Child Oral Impact on Daily Performance index into Serbian language and to evaluate its reliability in practice. Material and Methods. Following internationally established methods, adaptation of the Child Oral Impact on Daily Performance index for children and adolescents in the Serbian speaking areas consisted of three steps: forward translation of the Child Oral Impact on Daily Performance index, backward translation, and a pilot study. Results. A pilot study included 42 participants (21 males and 21 females), mean age of 12.0 ? 1.01 years. All items showed a corrected item-total correlation coefficient above >0.20 and the standardized Cronbach?s alpha coefficient was 0.80. All correlation coefficient values were positive. The prevalence of oral health impact measured by the Child Oral Impact on Daily Performance index was relatively high and 54.8% of the participants reported at least one oral impact on the daily performance in the last 3 months. The most common activities affected were eating (38.1%) and cleaning the teeth (16.7%). Conclusion. The Serbian version of the Child Oral Impact on Daily Performance index is suitable for use in everyday practice and it provides useful information in the evaluation of oral health-related quality of life. The prevalence of oral impacts was high with the most prevalent impact referring to eating. Further clinical research, including larger number of participants, is required for exact verification of the Child Oral Impact on Daily Performance index.

Introduction. Despite the development of restorative dentistry bond between materials and hard dental tissues is still not satisfying and often leads to marginal discoloration, microleakage, secondary caries and postoperative sensitivity. The aim of this study was to examine the clinical efficacy of different liners and oxalate-based desensitizer in preventing the occurrence of postoperative sensitivity. Material and Methods. This clinical study included 120 patients in which two homologous contralateral posterior teeth were restored with composite material and different liners. Patients were divided in three groups, depending on applied liner. In each patient, before the application of composite material in one tooth the liner was placed, while in the other tooth both the desensitizer and the same liner were used. The following liners were used: Calcimol LC, ANA Liner, Fuji II LC; desensitizer: BisBlock and composite material: Ceram-X Mono. Results. Teeth restored using Calcimol LC were the most sensitive after treatment whereas teeth restored with Fuji II LC showed the least postoperative sensitivity (Calcimol LC > ANA Liner > Fuji II LC). In the group of teeth restored with BisBlock postoperative sensitivity was observed in 6.7% restorations, while in the group where desensitizer was not used, sensitivity was noted in 15.8% of cases. Introduction Because apical periodontitis is recognizably an infectious disease, elimination or reduction of intracanal bacteria is of utmost importance for optimum treatment outcome. Objective The prevalence of Enterococcus faecalis and Porphyromonas gingivalis in infected root canals was studied Also, the effect of endodontic therapy by using intracanal medicaments, calcium hydroxide paste (CH) or gutta-percha points containing calcium hydroxide (CH-GP) or chlorhexidine (CHX-GP) on these microorganisms was assessed by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay. Methods Fifty-one patients with chronic apical periodontitis were randomly allocated in one of the following groups according to the intracanal medicament used: CH, CH-GP and CHX-GP group. Bacterial samples were taken upon access (S1), after chemomechanical instrumentation (S2) and after 15-day medication (S3). PCR assay was used to detect the presence of selected bacteria. Results E. faecalis was detected in 49% (25/51) and P. gingivalis in 17.6% (9/51) of the samples. Samples which showed no bacterial presence at S1 were excluded from further analysis. Overall analysis of all 29 samples revealed significant differences between S1 and S2 (p lt 0.001), S2 and S3 (p lt 0.05), and S1 and S3 (p lt 0.001). When distinction was made between the intracanal medications, there was a significant difference in the number of PCR positive samples between S1 and S2, S1 and S3, but not between S2 and S3 samples. Conclusion E. faecalis is more prevalent than P. gingivalis in primary endodontic infection. Intracanal medication in conduction with instrumentation and irrigation efficiently eliminates E. faecalis and P. gingivalis from infected root canals., Uvod Budući da je apeksni parodontitis oboljenje koje nastaje usled postojanja infekcije, za postizanje optimalnog ishoda lečenja najznačajnije je uklanjanje bakterija iz kanala korena zuba ili barem smanjenje njihovog broja. Cilj rada Cilj ovog rada je bio da se ispita prevalencija bakterija Enterococcus faecalis i Porphyromonas gingivalis u inficiranim kanalima korena zuba i ustanovi efekat endodontskog lečenja primenom intrakanalnih medikamenata - kalcijum-hidroksidne suspenzije (CH), gutaperka-poena na bazi kalcijum-hidroksida (CH-GP) ili gutaperka-poena na bazi hlorheksidina (CHX-GP) - na ove mikroorganizme metodom lančane reakcije polimerizacije (PCR). Metode rada Istraživanjem je obuhvaćena 51 osoba koja je imala zub s hroničnim apeksnim parodontitisom. Ispitanici su metodom slučajnog uzorka svrstani u tri grupe u zavisnosti od vrste primenjenog intrakanalnog medikamenta (CH, CH-GP i CHX-GP). Bakterijski uzorci iz kanala korena sakupljani su pri inicijalnom ulasku u kanal korena (S1), posle hemomehaničke obrade (S2) i posle petnaestodnevnog lečenja (S3). PCR analiza je korišćena za određivanje prisustva ispitivanih bakterija. Rezultati E. faecalis je izolovan iz 25 (49%) uzoraka, a P. gingivalis iz devet (17,6%). Uzorci u kojima nisu nađene bakterije u S1 fazi isključeni su iz dalje analize. Analiza svih 29 uzoraka je ukazala na statistički značajnu razliku između S1 i S2 uzoraka (p lt 0,001), S2 i S3 (p lt 0,05) i S1 i S3 (p lt 0,001). Kada se uzme u obzir vrsta intrakanalnog medikamenta, statistički značajna razlika u broju PCR-pozitivnih uzoraka zabeležena je između S1 i S2, S1 i S3, ali ne i između S2 i S3. Zaključak U primarnoj endodontskoj infekciji E. faecalis se češće javlja od P. gingivalis. Intrakanalna medikacija zajedno s instrumentacijom i irigacijom efikasno uklanja E. faecalis i P. gingivalis iz inficiranih kanala korena.

Introduction. Dental caries is still an important social health problem in many countries. The aim of this study was to determine the incidence and impact of oral discomfort, particularly caused by dental caries on the quality of life of middle-aged people as well as the association between oral problems caused by caries and the current status of teeth. Material and Methods. The study included 72 patients, age 25-45 years. Serbian version of the questionnaire Oral Impacts on Daily Performance (OIDP) was used to determine the overall impact of oral health as well as the specific effect of caries (SP-OIDP) on the quality of life. To determine the status of teeth the DMFT index was used. Results. The incidence of oral health impact on daily activities was 68.1%. Carious teeth affected food intake (40.0%) and brushing teeth (31.0%) but had no effect on showing teeth and maintaining normal emotional state. Caries was the cause of oral discomfort in more than half of the respondents. Of all clinical variables only DMFT>22 was associated with the SP-OIDP score after inclusion of socio-demographic factors in the analysis (rs=0.273). Conclusion. The results of this study indicate that the incidence of the effect of oral conditions on the quality of life is high with most respondents showing difficulties while eating. Using specific questionnaire it was noted that dental caries had a significant effect on oral functions of respondents. Also, there was a significant correlation between dental status and the quality of life of middle-aged people.

Introduction. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of dental caries and analyze the status of teeth in relation to sociodemographic factors and habits and behavior related to oral health among adolescents in the eastern region of Republika Srpska. Material and Methods. The study included 212 adolescents (71 males and 141 females) age 16-18 years. Information about sociodemographic characteristics, oral hygiene habits and behaviors related to oral health were collected using a questionnaire. The prevalence of dental caries was determined by applying the DMFT index and its components (D - decayed, M - extracted, F - filled teeth). The status of teeth was analyzed in relation to socio-demographic variables, oral hygiene habits and behavior related to oral health. Results. The mean DMFT value of examined population was approximately 8.6. A significant difference in the status of teeth of adolescents was reported in relation to the place of residence and oral hygiene habits - brushing frequency and the use of dental floss. A significant difference in the caries prevalence was recorded depending on the elapsed time from last visit and reasons for visiting dentist. Conclusion. The results suggested that the place of residence, oral hygiene habits and behavior related to oral health influenced the status of teeth of adolescents in the eastern region of Republika Srpska.

Introduction. As a systemic disease, diabetes mellitus may lead to several complications affecting both the quality and the length of life. While periodontal disease is one of the major oral health problems in patients with diabetes, reports of an increased risk of dental caries among diabetics are controversial. Objective.
