One of the articles "Comparative Age Class Feeding in American Oysters," by Gulnihal Ozbay and Lori Brown states that historically, most oyster restoration activities did not consider difference in age specific feeding when stocking programs are initiated. This may potentially lead to decreased levels of prey resources in the size range preferred by the dominant age classes of oysters in the area. In natural mixed-age class oyster reefs it appears that age specific differences in feeding exist. Another article "Oyster Invader More Abundant in Marine Reserves," by Dianna K. Padilla and Terrie Klinger states that out planting of non-native species is sometimes promoted for enhancement of local fisheries, replacement of species, or replacement of lost ecosystem function when native species are reduced or lost due to over harvesting and disease. The researchers found that densities of Pacific oysters were significantly greater in marine reserves than at matched reference sites out-side reserves, and similar patterns have been found for other invaders.

An oyster herpes-like virus infecting various species of oyster larvae and juveniles was first described in French and New Zealand hatcheries in 1992 and was associated with high mortality rates. Another article "Effects of genotype X Environment Interactions on Yields of Pacific Oyster Families Evaluated at Four Dissimilar Growing Environments," by Ford Evans and Chris Langdon states that broadly-adapted genotypes are required if a single line of selection is to improve Pacific oyster yields throughout the heterogeneous oyster growing environments found in the Pacific Northwest.
