There is no specific study about Stephan Kalynovskyi, and the texts written about him contain many mistakes. This article presents the biography of Kalynovskyi, including the following stages of his life: student and professor at the Kyiv Academy, archimandrite of the Zaikonospassky Monastery, rector and professor at the Moscow Academy, archimandrite of the Alexander Nevsky Lavra, member of the Synod, bishop of Pskov, archbishop of Novgorod. In this article, attention is paid to his relations with students and brethren of monasteries, as well as to his intellectual heritage (philosophical course, Bible translation, his library). The sources portray Kalynovskyi as an innovative teacher because he was one of the first at the Kyiv Academy to teach Greek language, history in the course of rhetoric and ethics in the course of philosophy, and also as an organizer of educational institutions. At the same time, he was a very conflict person. His philosophical course, taught at the Kyiv Academy, was copied verbatim from the philosophical course of the French author Franciscus le Rées., Про Стефана Калиновського досі немає окремої розвідки, а в тих текстах, де про нього написано, трапляється велика кількість помилок. У цій статті обговорено біографію Калиновського, зокрема окремі щаблі його життя: студент і викладач Київської академії, архимандрит Заіконоспаського монастиря, ректор і викладач Московської академії, архимандрит Александро-Невської лаври, член Синоду, єпископ Псковський, архиєпископ Новгородський. Увагу приділено його взаєминам зі студентами та братією, а також інтелектуальній спадщині: філософському курсу, перекладові Біблії та особистій книгозбірні. Калиновський постає в джерелах як викладач-новатор, адже він одним із перших у Київській академії викладав грецьку мову, історію в курсі риторики та етику в курсі філософії, а також як організатор навчальних закладів. Водночас він був вельми конфліктною особою. Його філософський курс, прочитаний в КМА, дослівно списаний у французького автора Франсуа ле Ре.

The article demonstrates the experience of religious reading of the iconic work of the prominent Kyiv bibliologist and academician of the end of the 19th – beginning of the 20th century V. Rybinskyi. The need for such a reading is determined by the fact that the Biblical texts contain a lot of empirical material relevant from the point of view of the history and theory of religious studies. Therefore, a kind of reconstruction of the field of theoretical positions important for the formation of the “science of religion” in the domestic intellectual tradition is actualized. At the same time, given the weak systematization, a certain theoretical amorphousness and the need to carefully “read” such provisions, it would be correct to say that Rybinskyi’s work has only the motives of “proto-religious studies.” The article proposes relevant provisions that characterize the position of the Kyiv researcher in the field of the source and methodological problems of religion research; in matters of the origin and historical development of religious phenomena; in evaluation of the socio-cultural and political dimensions of religious institutions. The arguments given by V. Rybinskyi on the structural components of a religious ritual or religious institution in general, both in its evolution and in functional connections, are valuable for religious studies. It is shown how the Kyiv Biblical scholar in his own research hypostasis and apologetic intention closely approaches the formulation of “protoreligious” provisions. The eloquent example once again traces the complexity of disciplinary formation in the na­tional culture of the “science of religion” and the complexity of rational knowledge of this phenomenon as a specific way of spiritual and practical development of reality.Manuscript received 07.08.2020, Стаття демонструє досвід релігієзнавчого прочитання знакової праці видатного київського біблієзнавця-академіста кінця ХІХ – початку ХХ ст. Володимира Рибінського. Потреба в такому прочитанні визначається тим фактом, що корпус біблійних текстів містить безліч емпіричного матеріалу, релевантного з точки зору історії та теорії релігієзнавчих досліджень. Відповідно, актуалізується свого роду реконструкція поля теоретичних положень, важливих для становлення «науки про релігію» у вітчизняній інтелектуальній традиції. При цьому, з огляду на слабку систематизованість, певну теоретичну аморфність та необхідність уважного «вичитування» таких положень, коректним буде стверджувати про наявність у праці В. Рибінського усього лише мотивів своєрідного «проторелігієзнавства». У статті запропоновано відповідні положення, які характеризують позицію київського дослідника у царині джерелознавчих та методологічних проблем дослідження релігії; у питаннях походження та історичного розвитку релігійних феноменів; в оцінках соціокультурних та політичних вимірів релігійних інститутів. Цінними для релігієзнавчого дослідження є наведені В. Рибінським міркування щодо структурних компонентів релігійного ритуалу чи релігійного інституту загалом – як у його еволюції, так і в функціональних зв’язках. Показано, як київський біблієзнавець у власній дослідницькій іпостасі та апологетичній інтенції впритул підходить до формулювання проторелігієзнавчих положень. На промовистому прикладі ще раз простежено всю складність дисциплінарного становлення у вітчизняній культурі «науки про релігію», складність раціонального пізнання цього феномену як специфічного способу духовно-практичного освоєння реальності.Матеріал надійшов 07.08.2020

Prominent 17th-century Ukrainian preacher Antonii Radyvylovskyi dedicated three of his sermons to St. Volodymyr, who is regarded as the baptistiser of Rus’. The article considers one of his sermons, an unpublished text on St. Volodymyr from Antonii’s Garden (Ohorodok) of the Most Blessed Theotokos manuscript (1671). The thematic and imagery level of the Slovo (i. e., homily) is the focus of the research. The author presents St. Volodymyr as a powerful ruler who has been chosen to enlighten and protect his people by God’s will. Antonii uses biblical quotations and allusions (from the Psalms, the Song of Songs, and so on) to describe the glory of the prince, proclaiming him the celestial patron of all Orthodox Christians living in the land of the Rus’. Moreover, the Ukrainian preacher endows the prince with almost messianic greatness. At the same time, St. Volodymyr is proclaimed to be a “spiritual” father and a godfather for his people. After the conversion to Christianity, he becomes kind and generous, like a true parent for his children. This metaphor correlates with passages from liturgical texts on St. Volodymyr, likely known by Antonii Radyvylovski. Praising the virtues of the prince, Antonii refers to different Western sources, such as Aesop’s fables, translated by Joachim Camerarius, and Andrea Alciato`s emblematic book. In the sermon, the verbal depiction of the emblem of the virtue of Faith demonstrates the image-oriented character of Antonii’s preaching, which is not uncommon for Baroque literature in Ukraine. To sum up, the unpublished sermon on St. Volodymyr from Antonii Radyvylovskyi’s manuscript creates a portrait of a virtuous and an equal-to-the-apostles prince who is the patron and father of all Orthodox Ukrainians., У статті розглянуто зображення образу князя Володимира у «Словѣ на святаго... Владимера» у рукописному збірнику «Огородок Пресвятой Богородици» (1671) Антонія Радивиловського. Автор казання, визначний український проповідник XVII ст., глорифікує давньоруського князя, представляючи його небесним покровителем, або «патроном», усього українського православного люду. Володимир постає водночас і як славний, величний правитель, і як духовний «отець», до якого можна звернутися по заступництво і допомогу. Одним із центральних мотивів у проповіді є богообраність Володимира, що надає постаті святого майже месіанського виміру.

In this article, the author carries on his research into works by Dmytro Bohdashevskyi (Archbishop Vasilii, 1861–1933), the famous Professor and Rector of the Kyiv Theological Academy in the early 20th century. The paper covers Dmytro Bohdashevskyi’s theological apologetics of the miracle and the supernatural in biblical narrative. It was established that Kyiv researcher realized the synthesis of epistemological, hermeneutic, dogmatic and religious-practical components in his position. Great attention is paid to his peculiar religious phenomenology, epistemology and praxeology of the Gospel miracles. Bohdashevskyi proposed a phenomenological representation of wonderful events in the acts of life experience. Religious structures such as experiencing the miraculous and experiencing the meeting the Absolute play the most important role. The epistemological basis of Bohdashevskyi ‘s reasoning about miracle in the Bible is the affirmation of its coherence with the human mind. This coherence is based on the act of religious faith in which a sacred rationalization of a miracle takes place. This way of rationalizing Gospel miracles objectively opposes both the primitive magical and the modern rationalistic (psychological, sociological, moralistic and scientific-natural) interpretations of the miraculous. However, the Kyiv apologist sometimes finds himself vulnerable to denying the significance of the act of faith and moving beyond the theological discursiveness to which his rationalist-minded opponents resort. The researcher objectively describes the assumption of the miracle as an intrinsically problematic cognitive act, demonstrating the complexity of human cognition as one of the underlying reasons for the emergence and existence of religion. In this way, D. Bohdashevskyi came very close to the comparison of scientific and extra-scientific knowledge, rational and extra-rational components of cognitive process.Article received 15.08.2019, У цій статті через аналіз творів Дмитра Богдашевського (архієпископа Василія, 1861–1933), знаного професора і ректора Київської духовної академії початку ХХ ст., висвітлено богословську апологетику чуда і надприродного в біблійному наративі. Встановлено, що в позиції київського дослідника реалізовано синтез філософсько-гносеологічних, біблійно-герменевтичних, церковно-догматичних і релігійно-практичних компонентів. Особливу увагу приділено своєрідній релігійній феноменології та релігійній праксеології чудесного в Євангелії. З’ясовано, що Д. Богдашевський запропонував феноменологічну класифікацію форм сприйняття чудесної події в актах життєвого досвіду, через певні структури релігійної свідомості, передусім переживання чудесного та переживання зустрічі з Абсолютом. Гносеологічний засновок апологетичних міркувань Богдашевського про сприйняття чудесного в Біблії – утвердження його узгодженості з людським розумом. Ця узгодженість ґрунтується на акті релігійної віри, в якому відбувається сакральна раціоналізація чудесної події. Така раціоналізація євангельських чудотворних актів об’єктивно протистоїть як первісним магічним, так і новітнім раціоналістичним (психологічним, соціологічним, моралістичним і науково-природничим) інтерпретаціям чудесного. Водночас автор показує певну вразливість київського апологета перед запереченням теологічної дискурсивності та виходом за її межі, до яких удаються його раціоналістично налаштовані опоненти. Д. Богдашевський об’єктивно характеризує допущення чуда як внутрішньо проблемний пізнавальний акт, що демонструє складність процесу людського пізнання – одну з посутніх підстав виникнення та існування релігії. Тим самим показано, що Д. Богдашевський у своїх міркуваннях впритул наблизився до проблеми зіставлення наукового й позанаукового знання, раціонального та позараціонального компонентів пізнавального процесу.Матеріал надійшов 15.08.2019

In this article, the author carries on his research into works by professors of the Kyiv Theological Academy (KTA) in the second half of the nineteenth and early twentieth century. The author spotlights how the pan-European controversy over the recognition of supernatural and miraculous in the Bible was actualized in Kyiv Orthodox biblical studies. This problem is considered in its dogmatic-theological and hermeneutical aspects. It has been established that the European rationalist criticism of the supernatural was, first and foremost, a problem of correlation between the historical and mythological element in the biblical narrative. The comparison of historical and mythological elements in the Bible was the focal point of debates in the West for researchers of both the Old and the New Testaments. In turn, the supernatural apology based on the recognition of the historical reality of a miracle in the Bible. Such recognition became the cornerstone of biblical apologetics, regardless of confession. It was shown that Kyiv Biblical scholars in their research supported the common European and world trends of controversy over the supernatural problem in the Bible. The doctoral dissertation by Prof. Stefan Solskii (1877), on protecting the supernatural and miracle in the New Testament, became especially noticeable. The Kyiv Orthodox apologists denied the desаcralization of the biblical narrative by criticizing both the mythological and naturalistic interpretations of the Scriptures. They confirmed the essential connection of the religious, dogmatic, and hermeneutical aspects of the problem of the supernatural in the Bible. So, the recognition of the reality of a miracle is а confirmation of the authenticity of the Holy Scripture itself, its truth and reliability as an image of Sacred History, a source of faith and Christian style of life.Article received 13.02.2019, Аналізуючи твори низки професорів та вихованців Київської духовної академії другої половини ХІХ – початку ХХ ст., автор висвітлює важливий етап актуалізації у київському православному біблієзнавстві загальноєвропейської полеміки щодо визнання історичності надприродного й чудесного в біблійному наративі. Означену проблему розглянуто в її догматично-богословському та герменевтичному аспектах. Встановлено, що в раціоналістичному дискурсі європейських біблієзнавчих студій критика ідеї надприродного поставала передусім як проблема співвідношення історичного та міфологічного елементів у старо- та новозавітній оповідях. Апологія надприродного ґрунтувалася, своєю чергою, на визнанні історичної реальності чуда в Біблії. Таке визнання ставало наріжним каменем біблійної апологетики незалежно від її конфесійного спрямування. Показано, що київські біблієзнавці-академісти у своїх бібліографічних публікаціях та авторських розвідках підтримали спільні європейські й світові тренди полеміки щодо проблеми надприродного в Біблії. Вони заперечували десакралізацію біблійного наративу, критикуючи як міфологічні, так і натуралістичні його інтерпретації. Київські апологети підтвердили сутнісний зв’язок віроповчального, догматичного та герменевтичного аспектів проблеми історичності надприродного в Біблії: визнання реальності чуда є підтвердженням достовірності самого Святого Письма, його істинності та надійності як образу священної історії, джерела віри та практик життя.Матеріал надійшов 13.02.2019

In the paper, the depiction of soteriological motifs in Leontii Karpovych’s Preaching on the Sunday before Christmas are considered. The image of Jesus as the true Messiah that developed in the Preaching is analyzed. The phrase itself – the true Messiah – was possibly adopted from some Polish sources, perhaps, from the Jakub Wujek Bible. One of the main ideas of the Preaching is to show connections between righteous man from the Old Testament and Jesus Christ who is their direct descendant. In the text of the Preaching, patriarchs, kings and prophets are compared to the messengers of the rich and powerful king; they are sent to inform his people of the king’s arrival. Their good news is about the forgiveness of sins and God’s plan for the salvation of humankind. In this way, the preacher describes an approach to the Christmas holiday and motivates his congregation to prepare their hearts for greeting the King of kings. Thus, believers ought to be ready for hosting the important Guest who will be present in the stable of their souls, which must be properly cleansed. The celebration of Christmas enables Christians to participate in the events of sacred history. According to Karpovych, using their imagination helps believers to meet with the newborn divine Baby and to share the joyfulness with those who celebrated the Messiah’s coming in ancient Israel. This propensity for compassion is an efficient mechanism for listeners/readers of the sermon to open their hearts and become closer to Jesus the Savior.Karpovych constantly emphasizes that the Lord descends from the Kingdom of Heaven to raise sinners to the heights of paradise. This vertical up-and-down movement represents the preacher’s view on the soteriological “strategy” of God. However, redemption is possible only in the womb of the true Church, which is compared to a sky illuminated by the spiritual light of Christ. Moreover, God needs people’s attempts to rid themselves of their moral impurity; this is why Karpovych prompts believers to repent their sins, to confess and to do good works, practicing prayer, fasting, and almsgiving., У статті проаналізовано відображення сотеріологічних (пов’язаних із церковним ученням про спасіння) мотивів у проповіді Леонтія Карповича «Наука в неділю перед Різдвом». Розглянуто характеристику образу Спасителя-Месії, простежено зв’язок індивідуальної та загальної сотеріології у тексті Карповича, приділено увагу практичним рекомендаціям, які автор дає своїй пастві для того, щоб належно підготуватися до зустрічі свята Різдва.

У цій статті автор висвітлює одну з форм залучення європейського досвіду біблійних студій, реалізованого в Київській духовній академії другої половини ХІХ – початку ХХ ст. Уперше предметом дослідження є критико-бібліографічні огляди та рецензії професорів КДА на праці іноземних біблієзнавців, що містять результати їхнього критичного осмислення досвіду раціоналістичного та ортодоксально-апологетичного трендів закордонних біблійних студій, а також увиразнюють пошуки ідейних та методологічних союзників для зміцнення православної біблійно-апологетичної позиції. Автор наголошує значущість розглянутих критико-бібліографічних публікацій, що стали своєрідним індикатором залучення київського духовно-академічного біблієзнавства до світового науково-богословського простору. Широта тематичного кола рецензованих праць, регулярність і частота появи оглядів та рецензій стала одним із показників рівня інтенсивності професійної комунікації в духовно-академічному середовищі. Вона демонструвала міру сприйняття київськими академістами актуальної у світі проблематики; способи реагування на методологічні й ідейні виклики; рецепцію тих чи тих дослідницьких і герменевтичних моделей. На підставі здійсненого аналізу автор робить спробу окреслити певні етапи еволюції зазначеного жанру впродовж 1860-х – початку 1900-х рр. Серед основних структурних компонентів корпусу оглядів та рецензій у статті виокремлено огляди старозавітних та новозавітних досліджень у таких тематичних компонентах, як ісагогіка, богослов’я та екзегеза, історична критика, текстологія, вивчення біблійних мов, географія та археологія, історія та хронологія, релігійна та культурна компаративістика. У тематиці оглядів і рецензій автор знаходить своєрідне віддзеркалення суттєвих моментів розвитку європейської біблійної науки.Матеріал надійшов 22.02.2018, In this article, the author explores one of the avenues through which the experiences of the European biblical studies were implemented in the Kyiv Theological Academy (КТА) in the second half of the 19th and early 20th centuries. For the first time, the critical bibliographic reviews of biblical research works written by foreign scholars are being examined as a genre. In the comments and reviews made by the KTA professors, we observe a critical analysis of the experiences related to rationalistic and orthodox apologetic trends as represented in foreign biblical studies, as well as a quest for conceptual and methodological allies in support of the Orthodox biblical apologetic perspective. These critical reviews represent a valuable asset indicating that the Kyiv theological academic studies had been incorporated in the global dimension of academic biblical studies. The broad range of subjects addressed in the reviews as well as their regularity and frequency testify to intensive professional communication within the theological academic community. In addition, the texts demonstrate the degree the Kyiv academics perceived the global issues and trends, the responses of scholars to methodological and conceptual challenges, and their perception of various hermeneutical models. The article specifies the stages in which the genre of review evolved from 1860s to early 1900s. From the key structural elements of the entire body of reviews and critical articles, the author distinguishes reviews of the Old Testament and New Testament studies in such thematic areas as isagogics, theology, exegesis, historical criticism, textual criticism, study of biblical languages, geography, archeology, history, chronology, and comparative studies of religion and culture. The subject areas of the reviews and critical articles specifically indicate significant development in the European biblical studies.Article received 22.02.2018
