Abstract We aimed to investigate the preventive effect of vitamin D2 on COVID-19 and the improvement of symptoms after COVID-19 infection. The study recruited 228 health care workers who tested negative PCR or antigen for COVID-19. Subjects were randomly allocated to vitamin D2 or non-intervention at a ratio 1:1. Subjects recorded PCR or antigen tests and the symptoms of COVID-19 twice a week during the follow-up visit. The concentration of serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D), C-reaction protein (CRP), complement component C1q and inflammatory cytokines were measured. The rates of COVID-19 infection were 50.5% in the vitamin D2 group and 52.4% in the non-intervention group (P = 0.785). There was no difference in the COVID-19 symptoms between the two groups. Abstract Anion-intercalation lithium metal batteries (AILMBs) are appealing due to their low cost and fast intercalation/de-intercalation kinetics of graphite cathodes. However, the safety and cycliability of existing AILMBs are constrained by the scarcity of compatible electrolytes. Herein, we showcase that a difluoroester can be applied as electrolyte solvent to realize high-performance AILMBs, which not only endows high oxidation resistance, but also efficiently tunes the solvation shell to enable highly reversible and kinetically fast cathode reaction beyond the trifluoro counterpart. The difluoroester-based electrolyte demonstrates nonflammability, high ionic conductivity, and electrochemical stability, along with excellent electrode compatibility. The Li| |graphite AILMBs reach a high durability of 10000 cycles with only a 0.00128% capacity loss per cycle under fast-cycling of 1 A g−1, and retain ~63% of room-temperature capacity when discharging at −65 °C, meanwhile supply stable power output under deformation and overcharge conditions. The electrolyte design paves a promising path toward fast-rate, low-temperature, durable, and safe AILMBs.

Abstract Nickel-rich layered oxide cathodes promise ultrahigh energy density but is plagued by the mechanical failure of the secondary particle upon (de)lithiation. Existing approaches for alleviating the structural degradation could retard pulverization, yet fail to tune the stress distribution and root out the formation of cracks. Herein, we report a unique strategy to uniformize the stress distribution in secondary particle via Kirkendall effect to stabilize the core region during electrochemical cycling. Exotic metal/metalloid oxides (such as Al2O3 or SiO2) is introduced as the heterogeneous nucleation seeds for the preferential growth of the precursor. The calcination treatment afterwards generates a dopant-rich interior structure with central Kirkendall void, due to the different diffusivity between the exotic element and nickel atom. The resulting cathode material exhibits superior structural and electrochemical reversibility, thus contributing to a high specific energy density (based on cathode) of 660 Wh kg−1 after 500 cycles with a retention rate of 86%. This study suggests that uniformizing stress distribution represents a promising pathway to tackle the structural instability facing nickel-rich layered oxide cathodes.

Abstract All-solid-state lithium batteries have attracted widespread attention for next-generation energy storage, potentially providing enhanced safety and cycling stability. The performance of such batteries relies on solid electrolyte materials; hence many structures/phases are being investigated with increasing compositional complexity. Among the various solid electrolytes, lithium halides show promising ionic conductivity and cathode compatibility, however, there are no effective guidelines when moving toward complex compositions that go beyond ab-initio modeling. Here, we show that ionic potential, the ratio of charge number and ion radius, can effectively capture the key interactions within halide materials, making it possible to guide the design of the representative crystal structures. This is demonstrated by the preparation of a family of complex layered halides that combine an enhanced conductivity with a favorable isometric morphology, induced by the high configurational entropy. This work provides insights into the characteristics of complex halide phases and presents a methodology for designing solid materials.

Abstract Low temperatures severely impair the performance of lithium-ion batteries, which demand powerful electrolytes with wide liquidity ranges, facilitated ion diffusion, and lower desolvation energy. The keys lie in establishing mild interactions between Li+ and solvent molecules internally, which are hard to achieve in commercial ethylene-carbonate based electrolytes. Herein, we tailor the solvation structure with low-ε solvent-dominated coordination, and unlock ethylene-carbonate via electronegativity regulation of carbonyl oxygen. The modified electrolyte exhibits high ion conductivity (1.46 mS·cm−1) at −90 °C, and remains liquid at −110 °C. Consequently, 4.5 V graphite-based pouch cells achieve ~98% capacity over 200 cycles at −10 °C without lithium dendrite. These cells also retain ~60% of their room-temperature discharge capacity at −70 °C, and miraculously retain discharge functionality even at ~−100 °C after being fully charged at 25 °C. This strategy of disrupting solvation dominance of ethylene-carbonate through molecular charge engineering, opens new avenues for advanced electrolyte design.

Abstract Direct band gap GeSn alloys have recently emerged as promising lasing source materials for monolithic integration on Si substrate. In this work, optically pumped mid-infrared GeSn lasers were studied with the observation of dual-wavelength lasing at 2187 nm and 2460 nm. Two simultaneous lasing regions include a GeSn buffer layer (bulk) and a SiGeSn/GeSn multiple quantum well structure that were grown seamlessly using a chemical vapor deposition reactor. The onset of dual lasing occurs at 420 kW/cm2. The wider bandgap SiGeSn partitioning barrier enables the independent operation of two gain regions. While the better performance device in terms of lower threshold may be obtained by using two MQW regions design, the preliminary results and discussions in this work paves a way towards all-group-IV dual wavelength lasers monolithically integrated on Si substrate.

Abstract Aqueous Zn-ion batteries have attracted increasing research interest; however, the development of these batteries has been hindered by several challenges, including dendrite growth, Zn corrosion, cathode material degradation, limited temperature adaptability and electrochemical stability window, which are associated with water activity and the solvation structure of electrolytes. Here we report that water activity is suppressed by increasing the electron density of the water protons through interactions with highly polar dimethylacetamide and trimethyl phosphate molecules. Meanwhile, the Zn corrosion in the hybrid electrolyte is mitigated, and the electrochemical stability window and the operating temperature of the electrolyte are extended. The dimethylacetamide alters the surface energy of Zn, guiding the (002) plane dominated deposition of Zn. Molecular dynamics simulation evidences Zn2+ ions are solvated with fewer water molecules, resulting in lower lattice strain in the NaV3O8·1.5H2O cathode during the insertion of hydrated Zn2+ ions, boosting the lifespan of Zn|| NaV3O8·1.5H2O cell to 3000 cycles.

State-of-the-art electrolytes limit the cycle life of halide-ion batteries. Here, the authors report a fluorinated low-polar gel polymer electrolyte capable of improving the stability of the electrolyte and electrode interphases to boost battery performance.

Electrolytes, function as an ion conducting membrane between battery electrodes, are essential for rechargeable batteries. Here, the authors report high-entropy liquid electrolytes and reveal substantial impact of the increasing entropy on lithium-ion solvation structures for highly reversible lithium batteries.

Abstract Owing to the conductance-adjustable performance, the emerging two-terminal memristors are promising candidates for artificial synapses and brain-spired neuromorphic computing. Although memristors based on molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) have displayed outstanding performance, such as thermal stability and high energy efficiency, reports on memristors based on MoS2 as the functional layer to simulate synaptic behavior are limited. Herein, a homologous Mo2C/MoS2-based memristor is prepared by partially sulfuring two-dimensional Mo2C crystal. The memristor shows good stability, excellent retention (~104 s) and endurance (>100 cycles), and a high ON/OFF ratio (>103). Moreover, for comprehensively mimicking biological synapses, the essential synaptic functions of the device are systematically analyzed, including paired-pulse facilitation (PPF), short-term plasticity (STP), long-term plasticity (LTP), long-term depression (LTD), and the transitions from STP to LTP. Notably, this artificial synapse could keep a high-level stable memory for a long time (60 s) after repeated stimulation. These results prove that our device is highly desirable for biological synapses, which show great potential for application in future high-density storage and neuromorphic computing systems.

Abstract A key challenge for solid-state-batteries development is to design electrode-electrolyte interfaces that combine (electro)chemical and mechanical stability with facile Li-ion transport. However, while the solid-electrolyte/electrode interfacial area should be maximized to facilitate the transport of high electrical currents on the one hand, on the other hand, this area should be minimized to reduce the parasitic interfacial reactions and promote the overall cell stability. To improve these aspects simultaneously, we report the use of an interfacial inorganic coating and the study of its impact on the local Li-ion transport over the grain boundaries. Via exchange-NMR measurements, we quantify the equilibrium between the various phases present at the interface between an S-based positive electrode and an inorganic solid-electrolyte. We also demonstrate the beneficial effect of the LiI coating on the all-solid-state cell performances, which leads to efficient sulfur activation and prevention of solid-electrolyte decomposition. Finally, we report 200 cycles with a stable capacity of around 600 mAh g−1 at 0.264 mA cm−2 for a full lab-scale cell comprising of LiI-coated Li2S-based cathode, Li-In alloy anode and Li6PS5Cl solid electrolyte.

The energy content increase is of paramount importance for the development of future Li-based batteries. Here, the authors propose a gel polymer electrolyte in combination with a positive electrode comprising of a Li-rich oxide active material and graphite to produce a high-energy Li metal cell.

Abstract Congenital facio-cervical masses can be a developmental anomaly of cystic, solid, or vascular origin, and have an inseparable relationship with adverse prognosis. This retrospective cross-sectional study aimed at determining on the prenatal diagnosis of congenital facio-cervical masses, its management and outcome in a large tertiary referral center. We collected information on prenatal clinical data, pregnancy outcomes, survival information, and final diagnosis. Out of 130 cases of facio-cervical masses, a total of 119 cases of lymphatic malformations (LMs), 2 cases of teratoma, 2 cases of thyroglossal duct cyst, 4 cases of hemangioma, 1 case of congenital epulis, and 2 cases of dermoid cyst were reviewed. The accuracy of prenatal ultrasound was 93.85% (122/130). Observations of diameters using prenatal ultrasound revealed that the bigger the initial diameter is, the bigger the relative change during pregnancy. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed that 2 cases of masses were associated with airway compression. In conclusion, ultrasound has a high overall diagnostic accuracy of fetal face and neck deformities. Prenatal US can enhance the management of ambulatory monitoring and classification. Furthermore, MRI provided a detailed assessment of fetal congenital malformations, as well as visualization of the trachea, presenting a multi-dimensional anatomical relationship.

Abstract Earlier literature suggests that ovarian preservation in young premenopausal clinical stage I endometrioid endometrial carcinoma patients does not negatively impact prognosis. The main purpose of this study was to clarify the incidence of ovarian malignant involvement in this group and further identify potential preoperative predictive factors of ovarian malignant involvement. A total of 511 premenopausal (age ≤ 50 years) patients were enrolled for the study at Women’s Hospital, Zhejiang University School of Medicine, between January 2002 and December 2016. Ovarian malignant involvements were detected in 23 of the patients (4.5%). Univariate and multivariate logistic analysis validated preoperative imaging of myometrial invasion depth and preoperative serum carbohydrate antigen 125 (CA125) level as independent risk predictors of postoperative ovarian malignant involvement. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves was generated for a combination of the two factors. The area under curve (AUC) was 0.772 (95% confidence interval [CI] 0.661–0.884) for the combined two factors. The incidence of postoperative ovarian malignant involvement was relatively minimal. Preoperative imaging of myometrial invasion depth and serum CA125 level were independent risk predictors of ovarian malignant involvement. These findings may facilitate preoperative counseling of patients and informed clinical decision-making on ovarian preservation in these patients.

Abstract In the latest geophysical survey crossing the Ninety East Ridge of the Indian Ocean, a new method was employed to perform proportional double seismic source excitation and synchronously receive signals from the sea surface and the seabed. The two seismic sources used for excitation were two sets of gun arrays with different energies and dominant frequencies, a G gun array and a Bolt gun array. The G gun array consisted of 3 G.II guns with a total capacity of 450 in3 and a dominant frequency of 20–100 Hz. The Bolt gun array consisted of 4 Bolt 1500LL air guns with a total capacity of 6000 in3 and a dominant frequency of 10–40 Hz. The seismic receiving system comprised a 480-channel seismic streamer towed from the sea surface and 21 ocean bottom seismometers (OBS). During offshore operations, the integrated navigation system produced equidistant trigger signals at an interval of 50 m. The trigger signals were distributed to the G gun array and Bolt gun array at a ratio of 3:1 after passing through a pulse signal proportional distributor. The two sets of gun arrays fired alternatingly at a given ratio. The receiving equipment on the sea surface and seabed simultaneously received the seismic signals excited by the two sets of gun arrays. After targeted data processing, in addition to the seismic profile generated by the conventional G gun seismic source, the deep seismic profile generated by the Bolt gun seismic source and the survey profile of the active-source OBS were obtained simultaneously. The penetration depths of the three sets of profiles reach 2 km, 6 km, and 30 km, respectively, greatly improving the efficiency of offshore deep-sea seismic surveys.

Monitoring the aging process in vivo is challenging. Here the authors generate a Glb1 +/m‒Glb1-2A-mCherry (GAC) reporter mouse model, where the GAC signal is consistently correlated with established biomarkers of cellular senescence, cardiac hypertrophy and shortened lifespan, which may prove helpful for studies developing anti-aging interventions.

A truncating variant of 17β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase-13 (17β-HSD13), a lipid droplet -associated protein, associates with lower risk of chronic liver disease. Abstract Based on the seafloor reflection coefficient obtained from autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) sub-bottom profile survey data of the northern slope of the South China Sea, combined with the sample test data of seafloor surface sediments, we use the Biot–Stoll model to establish the equations relating the seafloor reflection coefficient to the porosity, density, and mean grain size of the sediments at the dominant frequency of 5 kHz (the dominant frequency of the AUV sub-bottom profiler). The physical property parameters such as the porosity, density, and mean grain size of seafloor surface sediments are further inverted. Comparison of inversion results with measured results shows that the overall deviation ratios of the inverted mean grain size, porosity, and density of the surface sediments are in the ranges of − 13.56 to 14.44%, − 6.15 to 8.06%, and − 10.85 to 0.46%, respectively. Among them, the mean grain size directly reflects the size of seafloor sediment particles, and the particles are finer in deeper water. Overall, the inversion results are basically consistent with the measured values and thus can well reflect the variation characteristics of the physical properties of seafloor surface sediments.
