Abstract Heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) emerges as a singular subclass of heart failure, bereft of specific therapeutic options. Magnesium, an indispensable trace element, is essential to the preservation of cardiac integrity. However, the association between magnesium supplementation and mortality in HFpEF patients remains unclear. This study extracted HFpEF patient data from the MIMIC-IV database between 2008 and 2019. Propensity score matching was conducted to ensure that patients receiving magnesium supplementation (including magnesium sulfate and magnesium oxide) were balanced with those not receiving it in terms of baseline characteristics. The primary analysis focused on the 28-day all-cause mortality rate, with secondary endpoints encompassing ICU and one-year mortality rates, along with the duration of hospitalization. After matching, the study’s final cohort balanced at 1970 patients, with 985 patients per group. The results showed that magnesium intake significantly contributed to a decrease in the 28-day all-cause mortality rate (hazard ratio [HR], 0.682; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.539–0.863), particularly in subgroups such as older patients (HR, 0.65; 95% CI 0.52–0.81), females (HR, 0.55; 95% CI 0.41–0.73), and those with hypertension (HR, 0.62; 95% CI 0.48–0.79) or without diabetes (HR, 0.54; 95% CI 0.41–0.71). Although magnesium treatment improved both ICU and one-year mortality rates, it concurrently resulted in extended ICU and hospital stays. Mediation analysis indicated that blood urea nitrogen partially mediated the association between magnesium intake and mortality, accounting for approximately 22.73% of the observed effect. Magnesium supplementation has illustrated a significant potential for mitigating the mortality rate in the HFpEF patient, particularly among the elderly, female, and individuals with hypertension. Therefore, magnesium supplementation stands as a potentially valuable supplementary treatment modality for patients with HFpEF. Further comprehensive research is warranted to explore its effects more deeply.

Abstract Individuals afflicted with heart failure complicated by sepsis often experience a surge in blood glucose levels, a phenomenon known as stress hyperglycemia. However, the correlation between this condition and overall mortality remains unclear. 869 individuals with heart failure complicated by sepsis were identified from the Medical Information Mart for Intensive Care-IV (MIMIC-IV) database and categorized into five cohorts based on their stress hyperglycemia ratio (SHR). The primary endpoints evaluated were mortality within the intensive care unit (ICU), all-cause mortality within 28 days, and all-cause mortality during hospitalization. Cox proportional hazards regression and restricted cubic spline analyses were employed to unravel the association between SHR and mortality. The ICU mortality, in-hospital mortality, and 28-day all-cause mortality were 10.01%, 13.69%, and 16.46%, respectively. Multivariable Cox proportional hazards regression analysis revealed a significant association between elevated SHR and all-cause mortality. After adjusting for confounding variables, elevated SHR was significantly associated with increased risk of ICU mortality (hazard ratio [HR] = 1.67; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.03–2.70)), in-hospital mortality (HR = 1.53; 95% CI, 1.00-2.33)), and 28-day all-cause mortality (HR = 1.49; 95% CI, 1.02–2.17)). Restricted cubic spline analysis demonstrated a significant U-shaped relationship between SHR and the risk of all-cause mortality. This study revealed that stress hyperglycemia ratio is an independent prognostic factor in patients with heart failure complicated by sepsis. Notably, both very high and very low SHR values were associated with increased mortality risk.

Abstract The d-transition kagome metals provide a novel platform for exploring correlated superconducting state intertwined with charge ordering. However, the force of charge-density-wave (CDW) and superconductivity (SC) formation, and the mechanism underlying electron pairing remain elusive. Here, utilizing our newly developed methodology based on electride states as fingerprints, we propose a novel class of hydrogen-kagome superconductors AH3Li5 (A = C, Si, P) with ideal kagome band characteristics and elucidate the electron-phonon coupling (EPC) mechanism responsible for electron pairing. The representative compressed PH3Li5 and CH3Li5 demonstrates impressive superconducting transition temperatures (T cs) of 120.09 K and 57.18 K, respectively. Importantly, the CDW competes with SC thus resulting in a pressure-driven dome-shaped SC in CH3Li5, where the CDW order was induced by both EPC and Fermi surface nesting. Our study presents a scientific method for identifying high-T c hydrogen-kagome metals and provides new avenues to fundamentally understand the underlying mechanism of CDW and SC, thereby guiding future experimental investigations.

Abstract The thermal Hall effect recently provided intriguing probes to the ground state of exotic quantum matters. These observations of transverse thermal Hall signals lead to the debate on the fermionic versus bosonic origins of these phenomena. The recent report of quantum oscillations (QOs) in Kitaev spin liquid points to a possible resolution. The Landau level quantization would most likely capture only the fermionic thermal transport effect. However, the QOs in the thermal Hall effect are generally hard to detect. In this work, we report the observation of a large oscillatory thermal Hall effect of correlated Kagome metals. We detect a 180-degree phase change of the oscillation and demonstrate the phase flip as an essential feature for QOs in the thermal transport properties. More importantly, the QOs in the thermal Hall channel are more profound than those in the electrical Hall channel, which strongly violates the Wiedemann–Franz (WF) law for QOs. This result presents the oscillatory thermal Hall effect as a powerful probe to the correlated quantum materials.

Abstract In the recently discovered kagome metal CsV3Sb5, an intriguing proposal invoking a doped Chern insulator state suggests the presence of small Chern Fermi pockets hosting spontaneous orbital-currents and large orbital magnetic moments. While the net thermodynamic magnetization is nearly insensitive to these moments, due to their antiferromagnetic alignment, their presence can be revealed by the Zeeman effect, which shifts electron energies in magnetic fields with a proportionality given by the effective g−factor. Here, we determine the g-factor using the spin-zero effect in magnetic quantum oscillations. A large g-factor enhancement is visible only in magnetic breakdown orbits between conventional and concentrated Berry curvature Fermi pockets that host large orbital moments. Such Berry-curvature-generated large orbital moments are almost always concealed by other effects. In this system, however, magnetic breakdown orbits due to the proximity to a conventional Fermi-surface section allow them to be visibly manifested in magnetic quantum oscillations. Our results provide a remarkable example of the interplay between electronic correlations and more conventional electronic bands in quantum materials.

Abstract The insulator-metal transition in Mott insulators, known as the Mott transition, is usually accompanied with various novel quantum phenomena, such as unconventional superconductivity, non-Fermi liquid behavior and colossal magnetoresistance. Here, based on high-pressure electrical transport and XRD measurements, and first-principles calculations, we find that a unique pressure-induced Mott transition from an antiferromagnetic Mott insulator to a ferromagnetic Weyl metal in the iron oxychalcogenide La2O3Fe2Se2 occurs around 37 GPa without structural phase transition. Our theoretical calculations reveal that such an insulator-metal transition is mainly due to the enlarged bandwidth and diminishing of electron correlation at high pressure, fitting well with the experimental data. Moreover, the high-pressure ferromagnetic Weyl metallic phase possesses attractive electronic band structures with six pairs of Weyl points close to the Fermi level, and its topological property can be easily manipulated by the magnetic field. The emergence of Weyl fermions in La2O3Fe2Se2 at high pressure may bridge the gap between nontrivial band topology and Mott insulating states. Our findings not only realize ferromagnetic Weyl fermions associated with the Mott transition, but also suggest pressure as an effective controlling parameter to tune the emergent phenomena in correlated electron systems.

Kagome lattices composed of transition-metal ions have recently attracted great interest. Here, the authors report a new class of vanadium-based compounds with kagome bilayers which show lines of Dirac nodes in reciprocal space and superconductivity under pressure.

Up to now, all iron-based high-T c superconductors contain a square iron lattice. Here, Wang et al. report the observation of superconductivity in an iron honeycomb lattice accompanied with pressure-driven spin-crossover, in-plane lattice collapse and insulator-metal transition.
