Abstract

A study of catalysis by Ir4 and Ir6 clusters supported on porous metal oxide in structure-insensitive hydrocarbon hydrogenation reactions showed that the catalytic character of Ir4 and Ir6 differed from each other and from aggregated Ir. This showed that the concept of structure insensitivity was valid only for metallic particles and not for metal-like clusters. The metal structures of suitable sizes, which have superior catalytic character to metallic surfaces, can be developed.
