Background: Neonatal encephalopathy (NE) represents a primary cause of neonatal death and neurodevelopmental impairments. In newborns with NE, cerebral hyperperfusion is related to an increased risk of severe adverse outcomes, but less is known about the link between perfusion and mild to moderate developmental impairments or developmental delay., Methods: Using arterial spin labelling perfusion MRI, we investigated the link between perfusion in 36 newborns with NE and developmental outcome at 2 years., Results: 53% of the infants demonstrated a normal outcome at 24 months, while two had cerebral palsy with impairments in cognitive, motor, and language domains, and three infants died. The remaining infants showed mild or moderate delays in development in one or two domains. Hyperperfusion across the whole brain was associated with more adverse outcome, including an increased risk of death or severe disability such as cerebral palsy. Among the surviving infants, higher perfusion in the bilateral basal ganglia, thalamus, hippocampus and cerebellum during the neonatal period was related to a poorer cognitive outcome at 2 years., Conclusion: Hyperperfusion in infants with NE was associated with a more adverse outcome and lower cognitive outcome scores. In addition to severe adverse outcomes, altered perfusion is also related to mild to moderate impairment following HIE., Impact Statement: Neonates with neonatal encephalopathy (NE) show increased cerebral perfusion globally, which is linked to a more adverse outcome. Background: Patients with severe congenital heart disease (CHD) are at risk for neurodevelopmental impairment. An abnormal cerebral blood supply caused by the altered cardiac physiology may limit optimal brain development. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of a systemic-to-pulmonary shunt, aortic arch obstruction and arterial oxygen saturation on cerebral perfusion in patients with severe CHD., Methods: Patients with severe CHD requiring cardiac surgery within the first six weeks of life, who underwent pre- and/or postoperative brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and healthy controls with one postnatal scan were included. Cerebral perfusion in deep and cortical gray matter was assessed by pseudocontinuous arterial spin labeling MRI., Results: We included 59 CHD and 23 healthy control scans. The presence of a systemic-to-pulmonary shunt was associated with decreased perfusion in cortical (p = 0.003), but not in deep gray matter (p = 0.031). No evidence for an effect of aortic arch obstruction and arterial oxygen saturation on cerebral perfusion was found. After adjusting for hemodynamic and oxygen saturation parameters, deep (p = 0.018) and cortical (p = 0.012) gray matter perfusion was increased in patients with CHD compared to controls., Conclusion: We detected regional differences in compensation to the cerebral steal effect in patients with severe CHD., Impact: Patients with severe congenital heart disease (CHD) have altered postnatal brain hemodynamics. A systemic-to-pulmonary shunt was associated with decreased perfusion in cortical gray matter but preserved perfusion in deep gray matter, pointing towards regional differences in compensation to the cerebral steal effect. Background: Heart Rate Variability (HRV) originates from the interplay between parasympathetic/sympathetic inputs to the heart, thus serving as an indicator of Autonomic Nervous System regulation. Prior research indicates that decreased HRV, marked by reduced autonomic balance, is related to poorer cognitive performance. While the population with congenital heart disease (CHD) show changes in HRV linked with the heart defect, the association between HRV and cognitive functions in CHD remains unexplored., Methods: 46 adolescents with CHD who went through infant open-heart surgery and 64 healthy controls (50.9% males, 12.8 ± 1.4 years) underwent neurodevelopmental testing and photoplethysmograph acquisition. Group differences and associations with cognitive functions were analysed with linear regression. P values were FDR-corrected., Results: Adolescents with CHD showed lower HRV (quantified by high-frequency power) compared to controls (p < 0.001). Lower HRV was correlated with worse executive function (β = 0.24, p = 0.044) and lower IQ (β = 0.26, p = 0.010) in the whole sample and with lower IQ (β = 0.35, p = 0.014) in the CHD group. These associations were robust to confounders, including age, sex, and socioeconomic status., Conclusion: Our findings demonstrate an association between HRV and cognitive functions in adolescents with complex CHD. Early detection of alterations in HRV/autonomic regulation may help to identify children with CHD at risk for cognitive impairments., Impact: Adolescents with congenital heart disease (CHD) showed lower heart rate variability (HRV), indicating an imbalanced autonomic nervous system. Lower HRV was associated with lower IQ and executive function (EF) in the whole sample. The association between HRV and IQ was significantly stronger in CHD than in healthy controls. This study provides the first evidence of a link between altered HRV and cognitive impairments in the CHD population. Background: Inhibition abilities are known to have impact on self-regulation, behavior, and academic success, and they are frequently impaired in children born preterm. We investigated the possible contributions of resting-state functional brain connectivity to inhibition following preterm birth., Methods: Forty-four preterm and 59 term-born participants aged 8-13 years were administered two inhibition tasks and resting-state functional MRI was performed. Functional connectivity (FC) networks were compared between groups using network-based statistics. Associations of FCNs and inhibition abilities were investigated through multivariate linear regression models accounting for the interaction between birth status and inhibition., Results: NBS revealed weaker FC in children born preterm compared to term-born peers in connections between motor and supplementary motor regions, frontal lobe, precuneus, and insula. Irrespective of birth status, connections between the cerebellum, frontal, and occipital lobes and inter-lobar, subcortical, intra-hemispheric long-range connections were positively correlated with one of the two inhibition tasks., Conclusions: Preterm birth results in long-term alterations of FC at network level but these FCN alterations do not specifically account for inhibition problems in children born very preterm., Impact: Irrespective of birth status, significant associations were found between the subdomain of response inhibition and functional connectivity in some subnetworks. A group comparisons of functional brain connectivity measured by rsfMRI in school-aged children born very preterm and at term. The investigation of network-level functional connectivity at rest does not appear adequate to explain differences in inhibition abilities between children born very preterm and at term, hence other imaging techniques might be more suited to explore the underlying neural mechanisms of inhibition abilities in school-aged children born very preterm., (© 2024. Background: Children with congenital heart disease (CHD) are at risk for neurodevelopmental deficits. This study aimed to investigate the impact of cognitive deficits on educational outcome and participation in leisure activities., Methods: A prospective cohort of 134 children with CHD who underwent cardiopulmonary bypass surgery (CPB) was examined at 10 years of age. IQ was assessed with the WISC-IV and executive functions with the BRIEF (parent- and teacher-report). Parents reported on type and level of education and educational support, and leisure activity participation. Ordinal regression analyses assessed the association between cognitive deficits and educational outcome and participation., Results: Total IQ (P = 0.023), working memory (P < 0.001), processing speed (P = 0.008), and teacher-reported metacognition (P = 0.022) were lower than norms. Regular school was attended by 82.4% of children with CHD compared to 97% of the general Swiss population (P < 0.001). Seventy-five percent of children participated in leisure activities. Lower total IQ and teacher-rated global executive functions were associated with more educational support and lower IQ was associated with less participation., Conclusion: As school-aged children with CHD experience cognitive deficits, follow-up is required to provide optimal support with regard to educational outcome and participation in leisure activities., Impact: Contemporary cohorts of children with congenital heart disease undergoing cardiopulmonary bypass surgery remain at increased risk for cognitive deficits. Cognitive deficits affect educational outcome and leisure activities. Background: Congenital heart disease (CHD) is associated with an increased risk of brain abnormalities. Studies indicate a particular vulnerability of the hippocampus to hypoxia and inflammation. Yet, information regarding the hippocampus and its relation to cognitive function in school-age children with CHD remains scarce., Methods: Children who underwent cardiopulmonary bypass surgery for CHD (N = 17) and healthy controls (N = 14) at 10 years of age underwent neurodevelopmental assessment and cerebral magnetic resonance imaging to measure IQ, working memory performance and hippocampal volume., Results: IQ was significantly lower in children with CHD compared to controls (98 vs 112, P = 0.02). Children with CHD showed worse working memory performance with significantly lower scores in the letter-number sequencing test (P = 0.02). After adjusting for total brain volume, hippocampal volume was smaller in children with CHD compared to controls (P < 0.01). Smaller hippocampal volume was associated with lower IQ (P = 0.04), and digit span scaled score (P = 0.03), but not with other working memory tests (P > 0.1)., Conclusion: This study suggests that the hippocampus may be particularly susceptible in children with CHD thereby contributing to cognitive impairments. Further research is necessary to understand the contribution of the hippocampus to cognitive impairments in children with CHD., Impact: IQ is significantly lower in school-age children with congenital heart disease compared to controls. Working memory performance seems to be worse in children with congenital heart disease. Smaller hippocampal volume is associated with lower IQ and seems to be associated with lower working memory performance. Background: Altered neurometabolite ratios in neonates undergoing cardiac surgery for congenital heart defects (CHD) may serve as a biomarker for altered brain development and neurodevelopment (ND)., Methods: We analyzed single voxel 3T PRESS H 1 -MRS data, acquired unilaterally in the left basal ganglia and white matter of 88 CHD neonates before and/or after neonatal cardiac surgery and 30 healthy controls. Metabolite ratios to Creatine (Cr) included glutamate (Glu/Cr), myo-Inositol (mI/Cr), glutamate and glutamine (Glx/Cr), and lactate (Lac/Cr). In addition, the developmental marker N-acetylaspartate to choline (NAA/Cho) was evaluated. All children underwent ND outcome testing using the Bayley Scales of Infant and Toddler Development Third Edition (BSID-III) at 1 year of age., Results: White matter NAA/Cho ratios were lower in CHD neonates compared to healthy controls (group beta estimate: -0.26, std. error 0.07, 95% CI: -0.40 - 0.13, p value <0.001, FDR corrected p value = 0.010). We found no correlation between pre- or postoperative white matter NAA/Cho with ND outcome while controlling for socioeconomic status and CHD diagnosis., Conclusion: Reduced white matter NAA/Cho in CHD neonates undergoing cardiac surgery may reflect a delay in brain maturation. Further long-term MRS studies are needed to improve our understanding of the clinical impact of altered metabolites on brain development and outcome., Impact: NAA/Cho was reduced in the white matter, but not the gray matter of CHD neonates compared to healthy controls. No correlation to the 1-year neurodevelopmental outcome (Bayley-III) was found. While the rapid change of NAA/Cho with age might make it a sensitive marker for a delay in brain maturation, the relationship to neurodevelopmental outcome requires further investigation., (© 2022. Background: Brain injury and neurodevelopmental impairment remain a concern in children with complex congenital heart disease (CHD). A practice guideline on neuromonitoring, neuroimaging, and neurodevelopmental follow-up in CHD patients undergoing cardiopulmonary bypass surgery is lacking. The aim of this survey was to systematically evaluate the current practice in centers across Europe., Methods: An online-based structured survey was sent to pediatric cardiac surgical centers across Europe between April 2019 and June 2020. Results were summarized by descriptive statistics., Results: Valid responses were received by 25 European centers, of which 23 completed the questionnaire to the last page. Near-infrared spectroscopy was the most commonly used neuromonitoring modality used in 64, 80, and 72% preoperatively, intraoperatively, and postoperatively, respectively. Neuroimaging was most commonly performed by means of cranial ultrasound in 96 and 84% preoperatively and postoperatively, respectively. Magnetic resonance imaging was obtained in 72 and 44% preoperatively and postoperatively, respectively, but was predominantly reserved for clinically symptomatic patients (preoperatively 67%, postoperatively 64%). Neurodevelopmental follow-up was implemented in 40% of centers and planned in 24%., Conclusions: Heterogeneity in perioperative neuromonitoring and neuroimaging practice in CHD in centers across Europe is large. The need for neurodevelopmental follow-up has been recognized. A clear practice guideline is urgently needed., Impact: There is large heterogeneity in neuromonitoring, neuroimaging, and neurodevelopmental follow-up practices among European centers caring for neonates with complex congenital heart disease. This study provides a systematic evaluation of the current neuromonitoring, neuroimaging, and neurodevelopmental follow-up practice in Europe. Background: Short forms of IQ (S-IQ) assessments are time efficient and highly predictive of the full IQ (F-IQ) in healthy individuals. To investigate the validity of S-IQs for patients with neurodevelopmental impairments, this study tested a well-established S-IQ version in patients with congenital heart disease (CHD)., Methods: The Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children, Fourth Edition was applied in 107 children with complex CHD aged 9-11 years. F-IQ and a well-established S-IQ version were calculated for each patient. The agreement between S-IQ and F-IQ was investigated across the whole spectrum of IQ scores. Finally, we tested a method to adjust IQs to resolve potential bias and validated this method in an independent sample of 55 CHD patients., Results: S-IQ and F-IQ correlated strongly. Nevertheless, the size of the bias correlated with the true IQ, indicating larger error at the tails of the distribution. Estimating a corrected IQ by adjusting the S-IQ with correction parameters substantially improved agreement., Conclusion: We here report that substantial bias may underestimate low IQ scores and overestimate high ones. This bias should be considered when at-risk populations are assessed with S-IQs. Importantly, the bias can be minimized by using a correction formula.

Children with congenital heart disease (CHD) remain at risk for neurodevelopmental impairment despite improved perioperative care. Our prospective cohort study aimed to determine the relationship between perioperative brain volumes and neurodevelopmental outcome in neonates with severe CHD. Pre- and postoperative cerebral MRI was acquired in term born neonates with CHD undergoing neonatal cardiopulmonary bypass surgery. Brain volumes were measured using an atlas prior-based automated method. One-year neurodevelopmental outcome was assessed with the Bayley-III. CHD infants (n = 77) had lower pre- and postoperative total and regional brain volumes compared to controls (n = 44, all p < 0.01). CHD infants had poorer cognitive and motor outcome (p ≤ 0.0001) and a trend towards lower language composite score compared to controls (p = 0.06). Larger total and selected regional postoperative brain volumes were found to be associated with better cognitive and language outcomes (all p < 0.04) at one year. This association was independent of length of intensive care unit stay for total, cortical, temporal, frontal and cerebellar volumes. Therefore, reduced cerebral volume in CHD neonates undergoing bypass surgery may serve as a biomarker for impaired outcome.

BackgroundLittle is known about the relationship between brain volumes and neurodevelopmental outcome at 2 years of age in children with single-ventricle congenital heart disease (CHD). We hypothesized that reduced brain volumes may be associated with adverse neurodevelopmental outcome.MethodsVolumetric segmentation of cerebral magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans was carried out in 44 patients without genetic comorbidities and in 8 controls. Neurodevelopmental outcome was assessed with the Bayley-III scales.ResultsGray matter (GM), deep GM, white matter (WM), and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) volumes were 611±59, 43±4.5, 277±30, and 16.4 ml, respectively (interquartile range (IQR) 13.1, 23.3 ml). Children undergoing neonatal cardiopulmonary bypass surgery showed smaller deep GM (P=0.005) and WM (P=0.021) volumes. Brain volumes were smaller in patients compared with controls (GM: P=0.017, deep GM: P=0.012, and WM: P=0.015), whereas CSF volumes were greater (P=0.014). Of all intracranial volumes, only CSF volume was associated with neurodevelopmental outcome, accounting for 21% (P=0.011) of variability in the cognitive composite score when combined with common risk factors in a multivariable analysis.ConclusionIncreased CSF volume represents a significant risk factor for neurodevelopmental impairment in children with single-ventricle CHD. Later assessments are warranted to determine the prognostic role of intracranial volumes for long-term outcome.

Background: This study aimed to assess cortical gray matter growth and maturation in neonates with congenital heart disease (CHD)., Methods: Thirty-one (near) term neonates with severe CHD (8 univentricular heart malformation (UVH), 21 d-transposition of great arteries (d-TGA) and 2 aortic coarctation) underwent cerebral MRI before (postnatal-day 7) and after (postnatal-day 24) surgery. Eighteen controls with similar gestational age had one MRI (postnatal-day 23). Cortical gray matter volume (CGM), inner cortical surface (iCS), and median cortical thickness were extracted as measures of volumetric growth, and gyrification index (GI) as measure of maturation., Results: Over a median of 18 d, CGM increased by 21%, iCS by 17%, thickness and GI both by 9%. Decreased postoperative CGM and iCS were seen for CHD compared to controls (P values < 0.01), however with similar thickness and GI. UVH showed lower postoperative iCS, thickness (P values < 0.05) and GI (P value < 0.01) than d-TGA and controls. Infants requiring preoperative balloon-atrioseptostomy (BAS, 61%) had reduced postoperative CGM, iCS, and GI (P values < 0.05)., Conclusion: Infants with severe CHD show reduced cortical volumes compared to controls with gyrification being delayed in UVH, but not in d-TGA. Infants requiring BAS show higher risk of impaired cortical volume and gyrification.

Background: Adolescents undergoing early cardiopulmonary bypass surgery for congenital heart disease (CHD) may demonstrate a variety of neurocognitive impairments. These impairments can affect overall intellectual functions, but also specific memory deficits, language, and executive functions. As the hippocampus is a critical structure involved in these functions, we sought to determine whether hippocampal volume was reduced in adolescents with CHD and whether altered volumes were related to functional outcome., Methods: At a mean age of 13.8 y, 48 adolescent survivors of childhood cardiopulmonary bypass surgery for CHD and 32 healthy controls underwent neurocognitive testing and cerebral magnetic resonance imaging. Images were quantitatively analyzed using an automated regional segmentation tool (FSL-FIRST)., Results: Adolescents with CHD had 10% lower total hippocampal volumes compared with controls. After controlling for total brain volume, total hippocampal volume correlated with total IQ, with working memory, and verbal comprehension in CHD patients, but not in controls., Conclusions: In adolescent survivors of cardiopulmonary bypass surgery for CHD, specific brain regions such as the hippocampus may show long-term persistent alteration and correlate with intellectual deficits, particularly with verbal and memory functions.

Background: Amplitude-integrated electroencephalogram (aEEG) is increasingly used for neuromonitoring in preterms. We aimed to quantify the effects of gestational age (GA), postnatal age (PNA), and other perinatal factors on the development of aEEG early after birth in very preterm newborns with normal cerebral ultrasounds., Methods: Continuous aEEG was prospectively performed in 96 newborns (mean GA: 29.5 (range: 24.4-31.9) wk, birth weight 1,260 (580-2,120) g) during the first 96 h of life. aEEG tracings were qualitatively (maturity scores) and quantitatively (amplitudes) evaluated using preestablished criteria., Results: A significant increase in all aEEG measures was observed between day 1 and day 4 and for increasing GA (P < 0.001). The effect of PNA on aEEG development was 6.4- to 11.3-fold higher than that of GA. In multivariate regression, GA and PNA were associated with increased qualitative and quantitative aEEG measures, whereas small-for-GA status was independently associated with increased maximum aEEG amplitude (P = 0.003). Morphine administration negatively affected all aEEG measures (P < .05), and caffeine administration negatively affected qualitative aEEG measures (P = 0.02)., Conclusion: During the first few days after birth, aEEG activity in very preterm infants significantly develops and is strongly subjected to the effect of PNA. Perinatal factors may alter the early aEEG tracing and interfere with its interpretation.

A chromosomal balanced translocation disrupting the MED13L (Mediator complex subunit13-like) gene, encoding a subunit of the Mediator complex, was previously associated with transposition of the great arteries (TGA) and intellectual disability (ID), and led to the identification of missense mutations in three patients with isolated TGA. Recently, a homozygous missense mutation in MED13L was found in two siblings with non-syndromic ID from a consanguineous family. Here, we describe for the first time, three patients with copy number changes affecting MED13L and delineate a recognizable MED13L haploinsufficiency syndrome. Using high resolution molecular karyotyping, we identified two intragenic de novo frameshift deletions, likely resulting in haploinsufficiency, in two patients with a similar phenotype of hypotonia, moderate ID, conotruncal heart defect and facial anomalies. In both, Sanger sequencing of MED13L did not reveal any pathogenic mutation and exome sequencing in one patient showed no evidence for a non-allelic second hit. A further patient with hypotonia, learning difficulties and perimembranous VSD showed a 1 Mb de novo triplication in 12q24.2, including MED13L and MAP1LC3B2. Our findings show that MED13L haploinsufficiency in contrast to the previously observed missense mutations cause a distinct syndromic phenotype. Additionally, a MED13L copy number gain results in a milder phenotype. The clinical features suggesting a neurocristopathy may be explained by animal model studies indicating involvement of the Mediator complex subunit 13 in neural crest induction.

Background: Amplitude-integrated electroencephalogram (aEEG) is a reliable monitoring tool for electrocortical activity with good predictive value in preterm infants. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a good neuroimaging tool to detect brain lesions and to evaluate brain maturation. We hypothesized that early aEEG measures, recorded over the first 3 d of life in very preterm infants, correlate with brain maturation and injury score assessed by conventional MRI at term-equivalent age., Methods: Thirty-nine infants born at a mean (range) gestational age (GA) of 29.5 (27.0-31.9) wk and birth weight 1,230 (680-2,020) g had continuous aEEG during the first postnatal 72-84 h. aEEG maturity scores and average maximum and minimum amplitudes were evaluated. Conventional brain MRI was performed at 41.2 (37.1-44.1) wk postmenstrual age (PMA) on a 3T GE system and scored qualitatively for injury and maturation., Results: The average aEEG total maturity score and its cycling subscore were positively and significantly associated with the total MRI maturation score after adjustment for GA, morphine sedation, and PMA at MRI examination. No association was found between the aEEG measures and the MRI injury scores., Conclusion: Early aEEG maturity seems to relate to structural MRI brain maturation at term-equivalent age in preterm infants.

Congenital hypothyroidism (CH) can lead to intellectual deficits despite early high-dose treatment. Our study aimed to determine whether motor impairments can occur despite early high-dose treatment. Sixty-three children with CH and early (median age of onset of treatment 9 d), high-dose treatment (median starting dose of levothyroxine 14.7 μg/kg/d) were tested with the Zurich Neuromotor Assessment (ZNA) at a median age of 13.8 y (range 7.0-14.2 y). Median z-scores in the children with CH were -0.95 in the pure and -0.56 in the adaptive fine motor component, significantly lower than in the ZNA test norms (p < 0.001 and p = 0.01, respectively). The 26 children with athyreosis were more affected than the 33 children with dysgenesis, particularly in the pure motor (-1.55 versus -0.76, p = 0.03), adaptive fine motor (-1.31 versus 0.13, p < 0.01), and static balance task (-0.47 versus 0.67, p = 0.01). Boys performed worse than girls. Older age at onset of treatment was related to poorer adaptive fine motor performance. Movement quality (assessed by associated movements) was not affected. We conclude that severe CH can cause neuromotor deficits persisting into adolescence. These deficits cannot completely be reversed by postnatal treatment, but earlier age at treatment may reduce the degree of impairment.

The aim of this study is to describe the effect of sedation and analgesia on postoperative amplitude-integrated EEG (aEEG) in newborns with congenital heart disease (CHD) undergoing heart surgery. This is a consecutive series of 26 newborns with CHD of which 16 patients underwent cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) surgery and 10 patients did not. aEEG was monitored for at least 12 h preoperatively and started within the first 6 h postoperatively for 48 h. Outcome was assessed at 1 year of age. All 26 patients showed a normal preoperative continuous cerebral activity with sleep-wake cycles (SWC). The postoperative duration to return to normal background activity with SWC was similar for both groups. Independent of group assignment, patients requiring midazolam had a significantly later onset of a normal SWC than those without midazolam (p=0.03). Three patients in the CPB group and two in the non-CPB group showed continuous low voltage or flat trace after administration of fentanyl. These changes did not correlate with neurodevelopmental outcome. Sedation with midazolam has a transient effect on the background activity, whereas fentanyl can induce a severe pathologic background pattern. The significance of these changes on outcome is not yet clear. Thus, more attention should be paid to these effects when interpreting aEEG in this population.

We aim to determine long-term intellectual outcome of adolescents with early high-dose treated congenital hypothyroidism (CH). Sixty-three prospectively followed children with CH were assessed at age of 14 y with the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-Revised and compared with 175 healthy controls. Median age at onset of treatment was 9 d (range 5-18 d) and median starting dose of levothyroxine (L-T4) was 14.7 microg/kg/d (range 9.9-23.6 microg/kg/d). Full-scale intelligence quotient (IQ) was significantly lower than in controls after adjustment for socioeconomic status (SES) and gender (101.7 versus 111.4; p < 0.0001). Children with athyreosis had a lower performance IQ than those with dysgenesis (adjusted difference 7.6 IQ scores, p < 0.05). Lower initial thyroxine (T4) levels correlated with poorer IQ (r = 0.27, p = 0.04). Lower SES was associated with poorer IQ, in particular in children with CH (interaction, p = 0.03). Treatment during childhood was not related to IQ at age 14 y. Adolescents with CH manifest IQ deficits when compared with their peers despite early high-dose treatment and optimal substitution therapy throughout childhood. Those adolescents with athyreosis and lower SES are at particular risk for adverse outcome. Therefore, early detection of intellectual deficits is mandatory in children with CH.
