DANCE , *DANCERS , *BALLET companies - Abstract
Another day, another star-studded pickup troupe created by an alumnus of a major ballet company: former dancers, especially those coming from New York City Ballet, appear driven by a do-it-yourself, entrepreneurial spirit. On paper, this sounds great. In practice, it's almost always the exact opposite of great. Monday night it was Tom Gold Dance at Gould Hall, performing a program of New York premieres for its first full presentation in the United States. Mr. Gold was a much-loved soloist at City Ballet, and for this show, consisting entirely of his choreography, he cherry-picked a handful of that company's finest dancers, including the principals Jared Angle, Tyler Angle, Robert Fairchild and Sara Mearns. Simone Messmer, the dynamic American Ballet Theater soloist, made a brief appearance as well. As a friend of mine put it, ''This is like the Young Avengers of dance.'' [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
