Some of the men tossed off ballet-based stunts that in their elevation and snap reminded you why the world's ballet troupes often seek out Cuban male dancers. But that could change after watching this versatile actor and provocative writer's performance in ''Ghetto Klown,'' his latest autobiographical one-man Broadway show, now at the Lyceum Theater. A MAN leaned over to change from cordovan loafers into gold slippers as people started filing into Carlos Konig's salsa class in Midtown Manhattan on a recent humid night. Dropping briefcases, handbags and backpacks on folding chairs at the side of the room, many women also slipped out of their flats and donned sexy dancing sandals. Ranging in age from 20 to 78, the group included chief executives, teachers and police officers. When Eddie Palmieri's vibrant ''Malaguena Salerosa'' began flooding the fluorescent-lighted room, they looked for partners and listened for the beat. Small, compact and energetic, his ponytail swinging to the music, Mr. Konig called out, ''Two steps forward, two steps back,'' all the while rolling his hips and propelling his partner into a turn. There's no antiquarian dust on Septeto Nacional Ignacio Pineiro, the Cuban band that got started in 1927 and performed on Thursday night at S.O.B.'s on its first American tour in 76 years. The septet was a pioneer of the Cuban son (a dance style; son means sound), which is a foundation of modern salsa in this hemisphere and of Congolese soukous in Africa. The Septeto, which has replaced all its musicians through the years -- Pineiro died in 1969 -- still plays the Pineiro repertory. Its Cuban son, and its rumbas and boleros, are music of transparency, tensile strength and phantom drive. Pineiro's innovation was to add trumpet to the guitars, percussion and voices of previous son groups, bringing songs an ever-changing countermelody and prefiguring salsa's horn sections.
