NEWHOUSE--Mary. It is with the deepest sorrow that we must advise her innumerable friends that Mary Newhouse left us this past Sunday, February 7th, 2010. She was born Mary Alice Taylor on April 24th, 1935, in Fitchburg, MA. She received an MA degree in Fine Arts from Smith College in 1957. She subsequently married Dr. Robert P. Newhouse of New York City. After her husband's three year tour in the U.S. Army in Frankfurt, Germany, the family, now with two young daughters, returned to New York City, where a third daughter was born. In 1979, the family purchased property on Block Island, RI, and Mary became proprietress of the Sea Breeze Inn. Over the years she became an active leader of the community, founding several environmental organizations and ultimately becoming a leading member of the town's Planning Board. A lifelong supporter of the arts, she also was the Founder of the Island Gallery. Mary was an accomplished painter throughout her life. Her devotion to the arts included architecture, ceramics and dance. Following a gallant battle for six months, she succumbed finally to her illness. Her ashes will be scattered onto the ocean that she loved so much. She is survived by her loving husband of 52 years. Her siblings Arthur Taylor, Patricia Keany, and Jayne Taraski. Her loving daughters; Alisa, Sarah and her husband Steve Mikulka, Andrea and her husband Eric Moynier, and the grandchildren: Olivia Taylor Smith, Jules H. Smith, Samuel Mikulka, Lucas Moynier and Isabelle Moynier. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]
