Researchers at East China University of Science and Technology conducted a study on the fracture toughness of stainless steel welds at a cryogenic temperature of 4.2 K. They evaluated the effects of microstructures and chemical elements on the fracture toughness of the welds. The results showed that certain microstructures and chemical elements influenced the fracture toughness, with microstructures consisting of equiaxed grains at an average size of 30 μm exhibiting the highest fracture toughness. The study also highlighted the significance of controlling manganese content in the design and selection of weld metals.
