WRF-Chem-modellen har blitt brukt for å studere to episoder med forurensning fra smelteverkene i Nikel og Zapoljarnij, sommerepisoden 2007 og vinteren 2010/11. Meteorologiske inngangsdata fra WRF stemmer bra med analyse fra ECMWF. Modellen underestimerer SO2-konsentrasjoner i episoder, en mulig forklaring er at røykfanen blir midlet ut i modellen, samt at tidsutviklingen av utslippene ikke er korrekt representert. Budsjett over kilder og sluk viser at kjemisk tap er viktigst om sommeren, fulgt av våtavsetning, men våt- og tørravsetning er viktigst om vinteren. Wind and air temperature data measured above a snow cover in the Ny-Ålesund (78o54’N, 11o53’E) has been analysed. Wind data were logged both with a sonic anemometer and a standard weather station. Friction velocities estimated from wind profiles and from sonic momentum flux measurements show good correlation, while wind directions do not show a satisfactory correlation. It is shown that Charnock’s formulae for aerodynamic roughness length for snow fails to reproduce the observed data.

Et måleprogram er etablert for å måle klimagasser ved NILUs målestasjon på Zeppelinfjellet ved Ny-Ålesund på Svalbard. Rapporten beskriver årets aktiviteter 1999 og presenterer noen av resultatene. Måleprogrammet er i oppstartfasen. I 1999 ble den gamle stasjonen på Zeppelinfjellet revet og en ny ble bygget på samme sted.

The NILU-aircraft plume model combines the chemical and physical evolution in an aircraft plume. It describes the plume within a day after emissions. This report gives a detailed description of the plume dispersion, the diffusion within the different layers of the plume and the tropospheric chemistry scheme used in the model.

Radiative transfer calculations have been performed with two models of infrared radiation (broad band and line-by-line) and one model for ultraviolet and visible radiation (discrete ordinate method). The calculations are aimed at quantifying the radiative effects of radiatively active gases, in particular ozone. Seasonal variations and trends in the the radiative forcing due to presence of ozone in the atmosphere is studied, based on observed ozone profiles from ozone soundings at selected Nordic locations.

Norwegian and global sources of SF6 have been assessed, and GWP values have been calculated. It is found that on a global scale SF6 plays a minor role in the currently increasing greenhouse effect. However, in some countries, as e.g. Norway, SF6 plays a more important role due to a highly developed magnesium industry.

Data for 1991 from the Norwegian Ozone Monitoring Programme are presented. Total ozone data obtained with the Dobson instrument in Oslo for the period 1979-1991 have been reanalyzed.

The report describes the greenhouse effect caused by the species SF6 which is used in the magnesium industry. GWP values are calculated with a broad band infrared radiation transfer model.

A new atmospheric research station is built on the Zeppelin Mountain near Ny-Ålesund on Svalbard. The station is equipped with instruments measuring acid compounds and photochemical oxidants including precursors, greenhouse gases, gases that deplete the ozone layer, chlorinated hydrocarbons, particulate matter and meteorological parameters. The site is open for international collaboration.

The trajectory model with atmospheric chemistry developed by NILU, University of Oslo and DNMI (EMEP) has been applied to calculate the oxidant concentration at 9 receptor points in South Scandinavia in the period 26 August to 14 September 1980. The calculations show ozone concentrations exceeding 100 ppbv at the receptor points are efficiently reduced through reduction of European HC emissions, while reduction of NOx or NOx and HC in combination is much less efficient to control ozone.
